- 1:51Speaker 1: may win it. I mean, it's been a while, it's
- 1:54Speaker 1: been a long while. I am not off to a
- 1:57Speaker 1: good start this year, with one game in particular that's
- 2:02Speaker 1: just killing me here this week. But we'll see how
- 2:04Speaker 1: it works out. Friday's Fearless Football Forecast Contest America's most
- 2:09Speaker 1: loved football pick them contest. It's a division of sports
- 2:12Speaker 1: Talk and it's brought to you every week by Chad
- 2:16Speaker 1: Jones Law and Zwernemann Flooring. We've got Astros Rangers tonight
- 2:23Speaker 1: on the zone here at six forty Merril Kelly against
- 2:29Speaker 1: Blue Ball and Boach. You did mention man the bullpen
- 2:35Speaker 1: worn out. I mean there warn't out period. They have
- 2:39Speaker 1: pitched a lot of innings, but they've been really good,
- 2:44Speaker 1: but there were most of the guys were not available
- 2:46Speaker 1: last night. I expect the high leverage guys will be
- 2:50Speaker 1: available tonight. Frankly, I'm thinking everybody's available. I just think
- 2:56Speaker 1: they have to win this game tonight. I don't think
- 2:58Speaker 1: they can afford to lose this game tonight. I think
- 3:01Speaker 1: they have to win. So we'll see what happens. I
- 3:06Speaker 1: you know, I don't know if this is the headline
- 3:09Speaker 1: of the day, but it's interesting. Diego Pavia once another year,
- 3:15Speaker 1: a seventh year of college football. He took the NC
- 3:20Speaker 1: DOUBLEA to court got a preliminary injunction that allows him
- 3:24Speaker 1: to play this year. He argued that the red shirt
- 3:29Speaker 1: rule involving junior college eligibility violated anti trust law. The
- 3:36Speaker 1: NC DOUBLEA issued a blanket waiver for this season that
- 3:40Speaker 1: granted an extra year to athletes who previously quote competed
- 3:44Speaker 1: at a non NC Double A school for one or
- 3:47Speaker 1: more years. In today's hearing, Paby's attorney said, unless the
- 3:54Speaker 1: rules are not found to be subject to antitrust, they're
- 3:58Speaker 1: going to stack on a challenge to the red shirt
- 4:01Speaker 1: rule that asks for another injunction so he can play
- 4:07Speaker 1: next year. I mean, he's going to have grandchildren by
- 4:13Speaker 1: the time he gets out of Vanderbilt. But you know,
- 4:19Speaker 1: My guess is Clark Lee is going, hey, diego go
- 4:22Speaker 1: for it, or or now this year he said, hey,
- 4:27Speaker 1: I'm coming back here now. He had good quarterbacks, have
- 4:30Speaker 1: opportunities right to make a lot of money. I don't
- 4:33Speaker 1: know what the Anil situation is. Vanderbilt. We talked with
- 4:37Speaker 1: the writers about it yesterday. They've got a lot of
- 4:39Speaker 1: money there. It's private institution. They don't have to tell
- 4:41Speaker 1: you what they're paying. I suspect that if he wanted
- 4:47Speaker 1: to that if things go south for the second half
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the season for Vanderbilt, he could earn some bucks.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And the the thing is, he's not gonna play in
- 5:02Speaker 1: the NFL. It's in my mind that's not happening. Okay,
- 5:07Speaker 1: he probably knows this, so he wants a seventh year
- 5:12Speaker 1: whereby he's gonna make bank. Right, and if he's smart,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and you know he may be, I don't know, he
- 5:24Speaker 1: won't have to worry about playing NFL football, right. I mean,
- 5:28Speaker 1: I know he's getting seven figures this year. He could
- 5:33Speaker 1: get more than that next year if he continues to
- 5:36Speaker 1: play like this, right, a lot of people are gonna
- 5:39Speaker 1: want him. Hey, the next two weeks they get Georgia
- 5:44Speaker 1: State and Utah State. Right, so they're golden. They're gonna
- 5:50Speaker 1: be five and zero. Okay. Then they go to Alabama.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Now they beat Alabama in Nashville last year. I'm gonna
- 6:04Speaker 1: call it right now. I think Alabama's gonna win that game.
- 6:08Speaker 1: That's in two weeks, okay. Then they're an open date.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Then they host LSU, then they host Missouri, then they
- 6:16Speaker 1: go to Texas, and they finish, of course with the
- 6:19Speaker 1: robbery game at Tennessee. They got a lot of games
- 6:23Speaker 1: left to play, a lot of games left to play,
- 6:27Speaker 1: So we'll see. But I'm telling you, if this kid
- 6:31Speaker 1: keeps winning, he's gonna get paid next year. If he
- 6:35Speaker 1: gets that seventh year. Remember when the NCAA never lost
- 6:41Speaker 1: a court case and now they can't win one. I
- 6:45Speaker 1: think that's a beautiful thing. I don't care about. That's
- 6:51Speaker 1: that's enough of that. Yeah, I saw that. I saw
- 6:57Speaker 1: that poor kickers man that it's great when they make them,
- 7:03Speaker 1: it's not so good when they don't. And the poor
- 7:05Speaker 1: holder at Notre Dame. Wonder if MBC is going to
- 7:09Speaker 1: just like keep showing him on the sideline all year
- 7:12Speaker 1: long when Notre Dame's played. Hey, we didn't see enough
- 7:16Speaker 1: of this kid last week. All right, so I'm going
- 7:20Speaker 1: to play an interview that I did between two and
- 7:22Speaker 1: three weeks ago, Ivan Mazelle. You know him. He worked,
- 7:25Speaker 1: He worked at Sports Illustrated forever. He's been on ESPN.
- 7:30Speaker 1: He's covered college football almost as long as I have.
- 7:34Speaker 1: He's not as old as I am, but he's really
- 7:36Speaker 1: good at what he does. And he wrote a terrific
- 7:42Speaker 1: book on Frank Lahey, the Notre Dame football coach in
- 7:49Speaker 1: the forties and fifties. It's called American Coach, The Triumph
- 7:57Speaker 1: and Tragedy of Notre Dame Legend Frank Layhy. We're going
- 8:03Speaker 1: to jump out to the Player's Fund Center phone line
- 8:05Speaker 1: and visit with a guy who has covered college football
- 8:10Speaker 1: a long time and has written several books, the latest
- 8:14Speaker 1: that's called American Coach, The Triumph and Tragedy of Notre
- 8:18Speaker 1: Dame Legend Frank Lahy. Ivan Mazelle, Ivan, thank you so
- 8:22Speaker 1: much for the time. I really enjoyed this book. I
- 8:27Speaker 1: really knew next to nothing about Frank Lahey. I'm guessing
- 8:31Speaker 1: you've heard that before.
- 8:35Speaker 4: That's exactly the reason I wrote the book, Chip.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that what this guy did is just unbelievable.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And I guess the shadow of Newt Rockney is large,
- 8:50Speaker 1: is it not.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a good way to look at it. It's
- 8:54Speaker 4: really fascinating. You know. They used to say that when
- 8:59Speaker 4: ry Me beat you that he would throw his arm
- 9:02Speaker 4: around your shoulder and give you a hug and make
- 9:06Speaker 4: you laugh. And he was a great guy. And when
- 9:09Speaker 4: Layy beat you, he would step on your chest on
- 9:11Speaker 4: the way off the field. And you know, I think
- 9:14Speaker 4: the personality of the two has a lot to do
- 9:19Speaker 4: with why Rockney is still remembered and lay He is not,
- 9:23Speaker 4: which and it's ironic because lay he played for Rockney
- 9:27Speaker 4: and is still to this day as the second best
- 9:31Speaker 4: winning percentage among FBS head coaches to Rockney, and yet
- 9:37Speaker 4: nobody remembers him.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And he was a protege. Obviously. Rodney saw early that
- 9:44Speaker 1: that this guy had something different, didn't he He did.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Layy was he had a great football mind, he did
- 9:53Speaker 4: not have a great football body. And he you know,
- 9:58Speaker 4: he came from a little town South Dakota, and his
- 10:03Speaker 4: high school coach had played for Rockney, wrote Rockney letter
- 10:06Speaker 4: and Rockney said send him to South Bend, and he
- 10:08Speaker 4: came and he managed to win a starting job, but
- 10:14Speaker 4: he couldn't stay healthy because he just wasn't big enough.
- 10:16Speaker 4: And you know, he probably I don't think he started
- 10:19Speaker 4: five games in his college career. But Rockney thought he
- 10:23Speaker 4: had a great football mind and just mentored him, and
- 10:29Speaker 4: when his career was over, he got him. I mean,
- 10:33Speaker 4: when Lady's playing career was over, Rockney's felled him a
- 10:36Speaker 4: job and he was off and running, off and running.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I mean, my gosh. He went to Boston College, which
- 10:43Speaker 1: wasn't exactly a powerhouse, and went twenty and two in
- 10:46Speaker 1: two seasons. Did he not?
- 10:49Speaker 4: He did? He was thirty years old as a head coach,
- 10:53Speaker 4: and the two games he lost were to Clemson and
- 10:58Speaker 4: the Cotton Bowl and to Florida, and in both games
- 11:03Speaker 4: in nineteen thirty nine, the game contract forbid Boston College
- 11:08Speaker 4: from playing Lou Montgomery, It's black starting running back, and
- 11:13Speaker 4: without his speed and talent, Texas A and M lost
- 11:19Speaker 4: seven to nothing to Florida and six to three to Clemson.
- 11:22Speaker 4: And those were his only lays only two losses in
- 11:26Speaker 4: two seasons at BC.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And you know this is so interesting because I was
- 11:32Speaker 1: watching an old SEC thing on Urban Meyer yesterday and
- 11:40Speaker 1: Meyer just said, Hey, the wins just got to be
- 11:44Speaker 1: a relief. The losses were too much to bear. We
- 11:47Speaker 1: know that he had all kinds of physical issues, and
- 11:52Speaker 1: I'm thinking to myself, man, things haven't changed much in
- 11:55Speaker 1: sixty or seventy years or eighty years, have they now?
- 11:59Speaker 4: And you know, before Ibert Meyer said it, Daryl Royal
- 12:03Speaker 4: said it, and before Daryl Royal said it, frankly, he
- 12:06Speaker 4: said it, and he was by the time he got
- 12:10Speaker 4: to be forty five years old, he nearly died on
- 12:13Speaker 4: the sideline in his last season at Notre Dame, and
- 12:18Speaker 4: he just his body was wrecked. He wanted to continue.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Notre Dame had a young university president of thirty five
- 12:28Speaker 4: year old when he was appointed in nineteen fifty two.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Ted Hesberg and who of course became pent stayed as
- 12:36Speaker 4: president at Notre Dame for thirty five years, but he
- 12:39Speaker 4: had great plans to turn Notre Dame into a premier
- 12:43Speaker 4: academic institution, and he thought football was in the way
- 12:48Speaker 4: a little bit. So as la he's health worsened, Hesburg
- 12:53Speaker 4: was concerned about him, but he also saw it as
- 12:56Speaker 4: an opportunity to push football aside until he could get
- 13:00Speaker 4: the university's academic side on its feet. So Layy retired
- 13:07Speaker 4: after the nineteen fifty three season. Notre Dame was mediocre
- 13:11Speaker 4: for ten years, and then those ten years really began
- 13:14Speaker 4: to become a great academic school.
- 13:17Speaker 1: And again, there's nothing new under the sun with college football,
- 13:21Speaker 1: is there.
- 13:23Speaker 4: No, no, no, yeah, it's I mean, you know, lay
- 13:30Speaker 4: he to. There's always the push and pull between academics
- 13:34Speaker 4: and athletics, although you know, it's beginning to look like
- 13:37Speaker 4: athletics may have won at least where football is concerned.
- 13:41Speaker 4: And there's always the the demand on the coaches. I mean,
- 13:45Speaker 4: Urban is a great example. He is very much a
- 13:49Speaker 4: modern day Frank Leahy. And you know, the stress is
- 13:53Speaker 4: probably greater now given the you know, the attention and
- 13:57Speaker 4: the money that has become intertwined and and is part
- 14:01Speaker 4: of the definition of the sport.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Lay he built this monster at Notre Dame and had
- 14:07Speaker 1: to feed it, you know, every day. And you always
- 14:11Speaker 1: read about these coaches that sleep in their office. I
- 14:14Speaker 1: don't think he slept in his office. He slept somewhere
- 14:16Speaker 1: nearby the office, correct, and didn't go home much much
- 14:21Speaker 1: during the now.
- 14:23Speaker 4: He had a beautiful home about half an hour from campus.
- 14:26Speaker 4: With eight children. And then so instead of you know,
- 14:30Speaker 4: inserting himself in that tumult, he slept on a cot
- 14:34Speaker 4: in the firehouse on the university campus. And the firemen
- 14:39Speaker 4: at that time were all priests, and he just you know,
- 14:42Speaker 4: they you know, left him a little bedroom and he
- 14:46Speaker 4: would stumble over there about midnight and he'd wake up
- 14:49Speaker 4: at five am and go back to the office. And
- 14:53Speaker 4: you know, Fred Lay, who was one of was number
- 14:59Speaker 4: six of the eight children and is still alive and
- 15:02Speaker 4: well and living in Arizona, said a few years ago
- 15:05Speaker 4: that dad belonged to the world and mom had eight kids. Yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 4: and that's you know, that was really you know, that
- 15:13Speaker 4: was not unusual in that day and age for you know,
- 15:16Speaker 4: men to think, you know, mostly about their job. But
- 15:18Speaker 4: it really captured Frankly, he's private life.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Well, you know, he wasn't the most popular of coaches.
- 15:29Speaker 1: He didn't have a lot of friends in the coaching community,
- 15:32Speaker 1: did he.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Now, he and Wally Butts at Georgia were good pals,
- 15:37Speaker 4: and there weren't many others. There were a few others,
- 15:42Speaker 4: but by and large he didn't hang out with the
- 15:46Speaker 4: other coaches. He was very guarded around them. He was
- 15:50Speaker 4: always thinking about how to win a football game, and uh,
- 15:56Speaker 4: that's you know, the football coaching community then and now
- 16:00Speaker 4: there's a lot of camaraderie, and he just wouldn't participate
- 16:05Speaker 4: in it, and it I think contributed a little bit
- 16:08Speaker 4: to the you know, the stress on him. And that, really,
- 16:13Speaker 4: Chip is what in a way triggered what interested me
- 16:16Speaker 4: in Lahy's story, because you know, a few years ago,
- 16:20Speaker 4: when I was working on the one hundred and fiftieth
- 16:22Speaker 4: anniversary of college football for ESPN, I just noticed that, frankly,
- 16:27Speaker 4: he had the second best winning percentage in the history
- 16:30Speaker 4: of the game. And it took him thirteen tries to
- 16:34Speaker 4: be elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. And
- 16:36Speaker 4: the bottom line was the coaches on the committee and
- 16:41Speaker 4: most coaches in general, just didn't like him, you right,
- 16:45Speaker 4: They didn't like him because they beat him.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Yeah, he beat him, yeah exactly. And you write about
- 16:50Speaker 1: this big banquet they finally had and put together all
- 16:54Speaker 1: of these people and the former players came, and it
- 16:57Speaker 1: was basically a way to try to get the attention
- 17:01Speaker 1: and put pressure on the Hall of Fame committee to
- 17:05Speaker 1: finally put this guy in the Hall of Fame. It
- 17:07Speaker 1: took that didn't it.
- 17:10Speaker 4: It really did. It was fifteen years to the day
- 17:13Speaker 4: after he retired from Notre Dame. It was the first
- 17:17Speaker 4: event held in the Convocation Center slash basketball arena on
- 17:22Speaker 4: the Notre Dame campus, which is still there, yep. And
- 17:27Speaker 4: they had It was a star studded event and they
- 17:32Speaker 4: all came to seeing Lady's praises and put pressure on
- 17:37Speaker 4: the committee. In the following year. The committee did elect him,
- 17:41Speaker 4: you know, twelve months later. But you know, the most
- 17:44Speaker 4: to me, the most interesting speech came from father Hesberg himself,
- 17:49Speaker 4: who said on the dais in his speech, he said,
- 17:53Speaker 4: you had to overcome a lot when you were here,
- 17:55Speaker 4: including me.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Yes.
- 17:57Speaker 4: And there is ongoing debate that will never be fully
- 18:02Speaker 4: settled about whether lay He resigned or Hesburg pushed him out.
- 18:08Speaker 4: And I think it's one of those deals where it
- 18:10Speaker 4: just depends on what your viewpoint is. But to me,
- 18:17Speaker 4: Hesberg's speech indicated he felt some responsibility for lay He
- 18:23Speaker 4: leaving and that was his way of making amends.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Hesburg got a big a bit of an ego as well,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and I don't think he was real thrilled that Layy
- 18:34Speaker 1: was getting all the publicity during that time.
- 18:38Speaker 4: No there was an incident when General Eisenhower and his
- 18:44Speaker 4: wife Amy came to South ben in nineteen fifty two
- 18:47Speaker 4: to campaign as the Republican nominee for the presidency, which
- 18:51Speaker 4: he won two months later. Father Hesburg was out of town,
- 18:56Speaker 4: and lay He became the focal point of the Notre
- 19:01Speaker 4: Dame party that that welcomed Eisenhower. The photos went out
- 19:04Speaker 4: of Eisenhower and Leahy and Eisenhower and Mamy and lay Hey,
- 19:10Speaker 4: and they went out all over the world. And that,
- 19:15Speaker 4: you know, hesperg wanted he he did, you know, he
- 19:18Speaker 4: wanted to be the guy with Eisenhower and that lay
- 19:23Speaker 4: He always felt that that, you know, that was another
- 19:28Speaker 4: divide between him and the president.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Lay Yeah, I think of I think a Bear Bryan
- 19:36Speaker 1: and the Junction Boys. But but Layy did that just
- 19:39Speaker 1: about every day of practice, didn't he.
- 19:42Speaker 4: Yeah, they they in the years after the war. You know,
- 19:46Speaker 4: Notre Dame did not lose a football game from nineteen
- 19:49Speaker 4: forty six through nineteen forty nine, which is simply remarkable.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And there were some there were some recruiting questions where they're.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Not well the other coaches. You know, lay was went
- 20:01Speaker 4: into the Navy in nineteen forty four and early in
- 20:06Speaker 4: nineteen forty four, and all the other coaches thought that
- 20:09Speaker 4: what he did in the Navy was recruit their football
- 20:12Speaker 4: players to go to nots Your Dame. And there was
- 20:15Speaker 4: a lot more smoke there than fire. But the fact
- 20:20Speaker 4: was that the Notre Dame teams after the war are
- 20:23Speaker 4: considered the you know, the greatest conglomeration of talent on
- 20:27Speaker 4: anyone college football team ever. You know, George Raderman, who
- 20:32Speaker 4: was the second team quarterback, played ten years in the NFL,
- 20:36Speaker 4: you know, and there were guys who you know, couldn't
- 20:41Speaker 4: even make the squad that ended up playing in the
- 20:44Speaker 4: NFL or the CFL, and it was just an incredible
- 20:52Speaker 4: amount of talent and an incredible there's never well, nobody
- 20:58Speaker 4: else has gone undefeated over four seasons. That's as simple
- 21:00Speaker 4: as that.
- 21:02Speaker 1: There were also accusations from fellow coaches that lay he
- 21:06Speaker 1: played dirty.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Yeah, there were, and because his teams were so big
- 21:14Speaker 4: and so tough and so fierce and and you know,
- 21:20Speaker 4: the Stanford coach, Stanford had a home and home with
- 21:24Speaker 4: with Notre Dame. And after the nineteen forty two game,
- 21:28Speaker 4: Stanford canceled the return because they felt they just got
- 21:31Speaker 4: beat up. But they played to the end of the
- 21:35Speaker 4: you know, as Bobby Bowden used to say, they played
- 21:38Speaker 4: to the echo of the whistle. And Red Grange, who
- 21:42Speaker 4: was at that point in the early days of television
- 21:47Speaker 4: after the war, was you know, the sort of the
- 21:51Speaker 4: Kirk Herbstreet of his day in terms of having that voice.
- 21:54Speaker 4: And bred Grain said that the accusations of Notre Dame
- 21:58Speaker 4: playing dirty were bologney. That they were big, they were tough,
- 22:02Speaker 4: they were mean, and they played by the rules and
- 22:05Speaker 4: they were just better than everybody else, and that that
- 22:09Speaker 4: was lay He drove those players. He had so much
- 22:13Speaker 4: talent hip that they used to have a scrimmage between
- 22:17Speaker 4: the second team and the third team on the Thursday
- 22:19Speaker 4: before the game, just to see who survived, and they
- 22:23Speaker 4: would make the travel squad for the game on Saturday.
- 22:25Speaker 4: I mean, it was just incredible.
- 22:29Speaker 1: I was really surprised to learn that Frank Leahy almost
- 22:34Speaker 1: became the coach at Texas A.
- 22:36Speaker 4: And m Yeah, I know, and I was surprised too,
- 22:40Speaker 4: And that's that's you know, I immediately thought of you
- 22:44Speaker 4: and all your Aggie listeners because of that. He took
- 22:48Speaker 4: the job. And when Bear Bryant left for Alabama. Uh,
- 22:52Speaker 4: the you know, the Aggies wanted to make a splash,
- 22:55Speaker 4: and they brought the lay down and he took the job.
- 22:59Speaker 4: And before he you know, they shook hands, it was announced,
- 23:03Speaker 4: it was in the papers, and he said to the
- 23:05Speaker 4: president of the university, Look, I'm going to go home
- 23:08Speaker 4: and get my doctor to sign off on this, just
- 23:11Speaker 4: so you're you know, put your.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Mind to ease.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Put my mind at ease. And you know, everybody in
- 23:16Speaker 4: colsation went yeah, sure, whatever. And he went back to Chicago,
- 23:20Speaker 4: went to see a doctor there and the doctor said,
- 23:23Speaker 4: what are you nuts? You know you can't do this.
- 23:26Speaker 4: I mean, you know, he said, just in the week
- 23:28Speaker 4: since you left college station, all of your stress levels
- 23:31Speaker 4: have risen precipitously. And lay he called down the colstation
- 23:36Speaker 4: said I'm not coming and and that was really a
- 23:41Speaker 4: year or two later, there was some talk of him
- 23:43Speaker 4: becoming the head coach of you know, returning to Boston College.
- 23:47Speaker 4: But uh, he was done.
- 23:50Speaker 1: You know, you have a phrase that he coached himself
- 23:53Speaker 1: to death. Now he lived twenty years after he retired,
- 23:57Speaker 1: but I don't think there's anybody that thought had He
- 24:00Speaker 1: continued to coach he would have lived at all.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Right, Well, that's that's the consensus. I mean, he just uh,
- 24:08Speaker 4: he had you know what they back then called nervous breakdowns,
- 24:13Speaker 4: and that phrase was used in the papers to describe
- 24:17Speaker 4: what happened to him. You know what that well, how
- 24:20Speaker 4: that has translated into now, I think he just he
- 24:23Speaker 4: put so much pressure on himself and was so stressed
- 24:27Speaker 4: and to succeed that he got to where he couldn't function.
- 24:31Speaker 4: And you know that to me it sounds like he
- 24:35Speaker 4: was a great candidate for therapy. But that was just
- 24:38Speaker 4: beginning in those days, and and he he just h
- 24:42Speaker 4: he pushed himself to the brink. And he had a
- 24:45Speaker 4: great record to show for it. Uh, he had his
- 24:49Speaker 4: home life was was checkered at best, and and that,
- 24:53Speaker 4: you know, is again kind of what happened you know
- 24:56Speaker 4: in that era. Uh, you know, if you wanted to
- 25:00Speaker 4: a broad conclusion, but it's an incredible record and an
- 25:06Speaker 4: incredible story.
- 25:07Speaker 1: It is an incredible story. I'm thinking Ivan this this
- 25:11Speaker 1: book is going to hopefully push this guy back into
- 25:16Speaker 1: the forefront where frankly he belongs. I mean, there's just
- 25:20Speaker 1: very very few guys that have ever done what he's
- 25:23Speaker 1: done in college football.
- 25:26Speaker 4: No, I mean he you know, Chip, he coached thirteen seasons.
- 25:29Speaker 4: He had seven undefeated seasons out of thirteen. He lost
- 25:34Speaker 4: thirteen games in thirteen seasons. He won four national championships
- 25:42Speaker 4: from the wire Services and just an incredible record. And
- 25:47Speaker 4: even at the end, you know, he was nine oho
- 25:52Speaker 4: to one in his last season. So he you know,
- 25:54Speaker 4: he left at the top of his game. He just
- 25:57Speaker 4: he was fried. He couldn't take it anymore.
- 25:59Speaker 1: The book is called American Coach, The Triumph and Tragedy
- 26:03Speaker 1: of Notre Dame Legend Frank Leahy. It is out September sixteenth. Ivan.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I can't thank you enough. I just thoroughly loved this book.
- 26:13Speaker 1: I love learning about things that I probably should have
- 26:17Speaker 1: already known.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Hey, I feel the same way, Chip, But I had
- 26:23Speaker 4: great time researching and writing it. And thank you so
- 26:26Speaker 4: much for giving me this opportunity.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Thanks Ivan, My thanks to Ivan Mazelle. That book is
- 26:33Speaker 1: out today, just out today, and I highly recommend it.

- 28:59Speaker 1: I'm greeted this morning with the news that Robert Redford
- 29:03Speaker 1: has died. He was eighty nine. Died in his home
- 29:11Speaker 1: in Utah, according to Sydney Berger, chairman and CEO, telling
- 29:18Speaker 1: people he will be missed greatly. The family request privacy.
- 29:25Speaker 1: New York Times was first to report his death this morning.
- 29:30Speaker 1: No cause given. Berger told the outlet of his statement
- 29:33Speaker 1: he died in his sleep, a leading Hollywood heart throbbed
- 29:39Speaker 1: in the nineteen seventies, got a Best Actor Academy Award
- 29:45Speaker 1: nomination for The Sting I Still Love that movie, Best
- 29:50Speaker 1: Director Award for nineteen eighties Ordinary People, a Best Director
- 29:56Speaker 1: nomination for Quiz Show, an honorary Oscar in two thousand
- 30:03Speaker 1: and two in which he said, I've spent most of
- 30:05Speaker 1: my life just focused on the road ahead, not looking back.
- 30:08Speaker 1: But tonight I'm seeing in the rearview mirror that there's
- 30:12Speaker 1: something I've not thought about much called history. Let's see
- 30:21Speaker 1: started on Broadway, revived the Broadway adaptation of Barefoot in
- 30:27Speaker 1: the Park with Jane Fonda in nineteen sixty seven, was
- 30:34Speaker 1: in the Twilight Zone, The Untouchables on TV in the sixties.
- 30:39Speaker 1: The breakout was Bush casting A Sundance Kid with Paul
- 30:45Speaker 1: Newman in nineteen sixty nine, and from there, you know,
- 30:50Speaker 1: his career just went crazy. I mean, there's not too
- 30:56Speaker 1: many people that don't like Robert Redford.
- 30:58Speaker 7: I think, right, that's good, you know, yeah.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I mean every woman in the world swooned over Robert
- 31:12Speaker 1: Redford at one time, but rightfully so. The fact the
- 31:17Speaker 1: fact well he's I mean, he still looks good. But
- 31:20Speaker 1: the fact that he's eighty nine, that that kind of
- 31:25Speaker 1: caught me off guard. But yeah, I'm kind of used
- 31:28Speaker 1: to that. Yeah, big being reminded, being reminded how old
- 31:34Speaker 1: I am? Yeah, I don't. I don't really need the reminder,
- 31:37Speaker 1: you know.
- 31:38Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, Well, now.
- 31:41Speaker 1: I know you watched the Emmy's uh this week. Hulk
- 31:48Speaker 1: Hogan's wife, Linda maybe uh is not happy and when
- 31:54Speaker 1: this happens every year that the Hulkster was excluded from
- 31:58Speaker 1: the in memorial segment of the enemy she has of
- 32:03Speaker 1: the Emmy. She has suspicions as to the potential reasons.
- 32:11Speaker 1: She believes the Emmy's left the Holkster out due to
- 32:14Speaker 1: his recent embrace of conservative politics. I can't prove that,
- 32:20Speaker 1: she said, It's just a guess, but they should have
- 32:24Speaker 1: named him.
- 32:27Speaker 8: Can, I asked a quick question, Sure, did he ever
- 32:33Speaker 8: do anything that acting?
- 32:38Speaker 1: Well, yes, I mean he he was the king of entertainment.
- 32:43Speaker 1: I mean well, yeah, I mean at the point, yeah,
- 32:53Speaker 1: it was WWF and wwe had the highest ratings on
- 32:57Speaker 1: NBC beat all competition in that time slot.
- 33:02Speaker 8: I'm getting I'm getting them confused with something else.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Yeah, this isn't the Oscars. This is this, this is television. Yeah,
- 33:10Speaker 1: it's television.
- 33:11Speaker 8: Okay, I understand now.
- 33:12Speaker 1: And he and he was a giant he did TV star, right, Yes,
- 33:19Speaker 1: he was.
- 33:21Speaker 8: That makes sense.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I mean he was. He was a giant
- 33:24Speaker 1: TV star, so they they certainly should have recognized him, right, agreed.
- 33:34Speaker 1: But hey, this is a group that gave Stephen Colbert
- 33:38Speaker 1: a standing ovation. So what do I know? You know,
- 33:41Speaker 1: what do I know? So we'll just leave it at that.
- 33:45Speaker 8: Let's move on. Okay, controversial things.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Oh, that's not controversial. Stephen Colbert has no talent and
- 33:53Speaker 1: he's not funny. But other than that, Oh no, no.
- 33:55Speaker 8: No, no, no, no no no, I wasn't talking about that.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:59Speaker 8: There was a lot of things set at the Babby.
- 34:02Speaker 8: It doesn't matter.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not surprised, and I did not watch
- 34:06Speaker 1: it ever.
- 34:08Speaker 8: Whatever.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift, what a doubt? Let's talk Taylor.
- 34:15Speaker 8: And fiance because we can say that now.
- 34:18Speaker 7: Travis Kelsey helped Patrick Mahomes ring in his twenty ninth
- 34:21Speaker 7: birthday and the new photos shared by a friend and
- 34:25Speaker 7: country star Kane Brown on Instagram Monday see yesterday the
- 34:30Speaker 7: couple both thirty five here that they're both.
- 34:32Speaker 8: The same age, that's not exciting.
- 34:34Speaker 7: Alongside Brown thirty one and his wife Caitlin Mahomes and
- 34:38Speaker 7: britt and wife Brittany Swift stepped out in a matching
- 34:42Speaker 7: tope and brown plaid to be set featuring a mini
- 34:46Speaker 7: skirt and a vest. She completed the look with brown
- 34:49Speaker 7: Gucci platform pumps and a beat at Chanell Neckli.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Was looking good.
- 34:55Speaker 7: Kelsey's outfit was questionable in my eyes. At least, he
- 35:00Speaker 7: wore a white dress shirt, navy blue uh tom, maybe
- 35:07Speaker 7: brown suit shorts and black tresses.
- 35:12Speaker 8: I don't know what it is.
- 35:14Speaker 7: I'm sure there's a style element there, but if you're
- 35:17Speaker 7: wearing his suit and it's match with suit short, I
- 35:20Speaker 7: just I don't know.
- 35:21Speaker 8: It's one of those things that I can't get behind.
- 35:23Speaker 8: I'm sorry. It looks ridiculous to me.
- 35:25Speaker 7: Yeah, it did take place, But you know what, he
- 35:33Speaker 7: can wear.
- 35:33Speaker 1: He can probably wear anything he wants to write.
- 35:37Speaker 8: Of course he can. Of course he can't. They did it.
- 35:40Speaker 7: Apparently this party did take place after the singer did
- 35:44Speaker 7: attend the Chiefs first home game of the season.
- 35:48Speaker 8: However, she was loser. They also lost much better way
- 35:54Speaker 8: to celebrate your birthday.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Than going out.
- 35:58Speaker 7: I know there's a lot of people her thrilled that
- 36:01Speaker 7: the Chiefs are now zero and two, So you know what,
- 36:03Speaker 7: can you know?
- 36:05Speaker 1: What are you gonna do? Let me just point out
- 36:09Speaker 1: that ever since Travis and Taylor got engaged, the Chiefs
- 36:14Speaker 1: have not won a football game. I just thought i'd
- 36:18Speaker 1: throw that out.
- 36:20Speaker 8: Yeah, so everyone's gonna blame her.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Of course, and they should. Hey. Line up for this
- 36:28Speaker 1: year's Coachella is out. Sabrina Carpenter opens up on April tenth,
- 36:37Speaker 1: Justin Bieber on the main stage, followed by Carol G
- 36:45Speaker 1: Teddy Swims, FKA Twigs, Addison Ray, Sexy Red, Major Laser.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Oh I love that major Laser do you No? I
- 36:58Speaker 1: don't know who that is.
- 37:01Speaker 8: You just sounded actually excited.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Yeah no. And it's going to be two weekends back
- 37:07Speaker 1: to back. This will be Justin's biggest performance in years.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Follows the well received release of Swag and Swag Too
- 37:21Speaker 1: over the summer. Sabrina infamously debuted her viral song Espresso
- 37:28Speaker 1: at Coachella last year. Released her new album Man's Best
- 37:33Speaker 1: Friend in August. Tickets not on sale yet. Uh ye.
- 37:44Speaker 1: But we'll try to keep you updated for sure.
- 37:48Speaker 8: You're all dying to know.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Well, you don't want to miss out. And by the way,
- 37:53Speaker 1: you better have a big polla cash if you plan
- 37:56Speaker 1: on going to this deal.
- 37:59Speaker 8: That maybe bring your own portable toilet.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Big poly cash. Yeah your gap. Yeah unfortunately. Yeah, we all.
- 38:11Speaker 8: Remember the empty out your life savings.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Empty out your savings and hand it to the guards
- 38:17Speaker 1: up front and see if they'll let you. Uh, you know,
- 38:21Speaker 1: set somewhere with shade and a bathroom.
- 38:25Speaker 8: And but be prepared.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Be prepared for water bottle, be prepared.
- 38:31Speaker 8: I'm making all this up.
- 38:32Speaker 1: I had no I think you're right, but I.
- 38:35Speaker 8: Mean I feel like I am. You know, I feel
- 38:38Speaker 8: pretty confident. Let's switch things.
- 38:41Speaker 7: Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson are making a rare appearance
- 38:46Speaker 7: with the royals at the funeral for Catherine, the Duchess
- 38:49Speaker 7: of Kent on September sixteenth, So that's today. Yeah, they
- 38:55Speaker 7: both they're both sixty five or arrived together for the
- 38:58Speaker 7: historic royal funeral of the Duchess of Kent. Catherine was
- 39:02Speaker 7: married to Queen Elizabeth's cousin, Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent,
- 39:06Speaker 7: and on September fifth, Buckingham Palace did announce her death
- 39:10Speaker 7: at age ninety two.
- 39:13Speaker 8: Wow.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Yeah, a long time well.
- 39:17Speaker 7: King Charles, Prince William and Kate Middleton also attended the
- 39:20Speaker 7: funeral mass, with which Queen Camilla was forced to withdraw
- 39:24Speaker 7: from at the last minute due to a shame or
- 39:28Speaker 7: they just all hate her, I don't know. The Duchess
- 39:30Speaker 7: of Kent's funeral marked a rare public appearance at the
- 39:33Speaker 7: royal family event for Prince Andrew and Ferguson, who is
- 39:36Speaker 7: popularly known as viergu.
- 39:38Speaker 1: I always liked party.
- 39:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I think a lot of people did. What was
- 39:42Speaker 8: she like best friends with Princess Diana? Yes, okay, that's
- 39:46Speaker 8: what I thought. I just wanted to make sure. Who knows. Anyways,
- 39:49Speaker 8: they were seen driving in Windsor in August, but they.
- 39:53Speaker 7: Last officially stepped out together to attend the Easter service
- 39:57Speaker 7: at Saint George's Chapel at the Windsor Castle and a
- 40:00Speaker 7: and outing that their daughters, Prontess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie
- 40:04Speaker 7: also attended with their husbands, King Charles younger brother Andrew.
- 40:10Speaker 1: He's the black sheep of the family.
- 40:13Speaker 7: Uh huh, Because after stepping back from his public duties.
- 40:16Speaker 7: In twenty nineteen, following his explosive interview with the BBC's
- 40:20Speaker 7: News Night about his links to the late Jeffrey Epstein,
- 40:24Speaker 7: the Duke of York was stripped of his military titles
- 40:28Speaker 7: by his.
- 40:28Speaker 8: Mother, the Queen.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:30Speaker 8: Nothing says a punishment like your mom like that.
- 40:33Speaker 7: In January twenty twenty two, after attempting attempting to have
- 40:37Speaker 7: Virginia's I'm so sorry, I don't know her last name,
- 40:40Speaker 7: but she was the one basically, the sexual assault lawsuit
- 40:43Speaker 7: against him dismissed. Prince Andrew has denied any wrongdoings, even
- 40:48Speaker 7: though we're not all blind, didn't know that. That's probably
- 40:50Speaker 7: not true. And Virginia unfortunately did die by suicide earlier
- 40:54Speaker 7: this year. Wow, but yeah, I don't know.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Andrew's got a lot of nerves stepping out in the public.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Nick Cannon, oh talking about fatherhood during an appearance on
- 41:12Speaker 1: the morning radio show The Breakfast Club, Canon opened up
- 41:16Speaker 1: about being the father of twelve, says that welcoming his
- 41:22Speaker 1: children the way he did was a response to his trauma.
- 41:26Speaker 1: I wasn't like I was acting out. It was more
- 41:28Speaker 1: of being careless, being frivolous with my process because I
- 41:33Speaker 1: could do it. I had the money, I had the
- 41:37Speaker 1: access to whoever, and however I wanted to move. Obviously,
- 41:43Speaker 1: life happens as well, so it wasn't like, oh, I'm
- 41:46Speaker 1: going to go have twelve kids. It was more about, yo,
- 41:51Speaker 1: I'm going to just live life and have fun and
- 41:53Speaker 1: whatever happens happens. Being almost forty five, now I could
- 41:58Speaker 1: sit back and like, yeah, if I would have thought
- 42:00Speaker 1: the process through a little bit more and took time,
- 42:05Speaker 1: things might have been a little different in certain scenarios.
- 42:13Speaker 8: You don't say, you don't say, I mean, this is
- 42:19Speaker 8: a lesson for everyone.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Good gosh, I'm surprised the NBA hasn't asked him to play.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, just saying you know, that's true.
- 42:31Speaker 8: Surprise TLC. It hasn't been like a Nick let's do
- 42:35Speaker 8: you know?
- 42:35Speaker 1: I don't. I'm sure I could google it if I
- 42:38Speaker 1: really cared. I don't know how many baby mamas there
- 42:41Speaker 1: are with the twelve kids.
- 42:43Speaker 8: Well now I have to know, Okay, look it up.
- 42:47Speaker 1: How many baby mamas does Nick Cannon have?
- 42:51Speaker 8: I want you to know. I started off with how
- 42:54Speaker 8: many baby mamas?
- 42:55Speaker 7: And there is a list of boy or men who
- 42:58Speaker 7: have just auto generation.
- 43:00Speaker 1: That's not good that that didn't work. I mean a
- 43:06Speaker 1: I didn't understand the question.
- 43:08Speaker 8: He has six baby mamas.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Wow, that's a lot than I would.
- 43:14Speaker 8: Have been to AI. According to AI, I could list
- 43:18Speaker 8: them all for you, but.
- 43:19Speaker 1: No, I don't really care. Not yeah, I don't really care.
- 43:25Speaker 7: Speaking of baby mama's secret life of Mormon wives.
- 43:29Speaker 1: We just talked about this somehow.
- 43:31Speaker 7: Yeah, there's another one now in the Jen a Flag
- 43:35Speaker 7: is not actually related to Ben affle Okay, in case
- 43:38Speaker 7: you guys were wondering, I did not know that. That's
- 43:40Speaker 7: not stopping her from leaning into the bit thanks to
- 43:43Speaker 7: some help from Duncan. We Love a good Duncan commercial.
- 43:47Speaker 7: Jin not Jennifer Lopez Jen Affleck. So we're clear when
- 43:51Speaker 7: I say Jin and beIN a Flag, not to be
- 43:54Speaker 7: confused again with the actor's ex wife, who also previously
- 43:58Speaker 7: started dunking.
- 43:59Speaker 1: This is getting confusing anyways.
- 44:02Speaker 7: They appeared in an ad for for Duncan release yesterday.
- 44:07Speaker 7: The commercial features the mom talker dubbing herself the value
- 44:11Speaker 7: AFLAC its release uh with Jen Afflecks and upcoming appearance
- 44:16Speaker 7: on Dancing with the Stars.
- 44:17Speaker 1: So she is one of the dancers, and there are
- 44:19Speaker 1: a lot of cless of people on Dancing with the
- 44:22Speaker 1: Stars this year.
- 44:23Speaker 8: I'm just sure is but what can you do? So?
- 44:28Speaker 7: Jen Afflex basically did on the show The Secret Life
- 44:33Speaker 7: of Mormon Wives purport relation to the Oscar Award winning actor,
- 44:38Speaker 7: which this has been a point of speculation.
- 44:41Speaker 8: Uh.
- 44:41Speaker 7: In a minute long commercial, the Duncan workers call out
- 44:44Speaker 7: an order for aflac uh. When some customers seem to
- 44:48Speaker 7: think it's for Ben Affleck, Jen Affleck appears instead expecting
- 44:53Speaker 7: my cousin Ben.
- 44:54Speaker 8: Nah.
- 44:54Speaker 7: She says, when Duncan has something backed with amazing value,
- 44:58Speaker 7: they bring.
- 44:58Speaker 8: Me in, Jen Flack. The value a flat.
- 45:02Speaker 1: I mean, that's semi clever. I mean I think there.
- 45:06Speaker 8: Was a whole thing that her because her husband's last
- 45:08Speaker 8: name is Affleck. That's how she became Jen af Flack.
- 45:10Speaker 7: And it was like some rumor that Ben Affleck was
- 45:13Speaker 7: reported like distant cousin.
- 45:15Speaker 1: I mean, why why would why would you ride that train?
- 45:18Speaker 1: You know, especially when nobody else knows who you are.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Let's uh. Ben probably wasn't real happy about it, but hey,
- 45:26Speaker 1: at least he gets paid for a commercial, you know
- 45:28Speaker 1: what I'm saying?
- 45:28Speaker 7: I was going to say, if Duncan's involved, He's probably
- 45:31Speaker 7: like whatever, Yeah, just.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Write my check. Yeah, sure, this is this is different.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Jessica Simpson has revealed that she reconnected recently with her
- 45:47Speaker 1: ex boyfriend Tony Romo, but it wasn't exactly a romantic reunion,
- 45:53Speaker 1: which is good because Tony, I believe, is married. The
- 45:56Speaker 1: singer and fashion mogul shared the story on stage this
- 46:01Speaker 1: month at the Women Who Rock Benefit concert in Pittsburgh.
- 46:04Speaker 1: A couple of weeks ago, my mom got a phone call,
- 46:07Speaker 1: she told the crowd. He's calling my mom saying, well, Tina,
- 46:11Speaker 1: I'm selling the boat, and my mom's like okay, and
- 46:16Speaker 1: Simpson appeared to be referencing and alleged one hundred thousand
- 46:20Speaker 1: dollars speed boat that she gave Tony for his twenty
- 46:24Speaker 1: eighth birthday back in two thousand and nine. He's like, well,
- 46:31Speaker 1: Jessica's name is still on the title, he explained. So
- 46:35Speaker 1: then I get the paperwork and I have to sign
- 46:37Speaker 1: over this boat for him to sell. According to Simpson,
- 46:41Speaker 1: Romo's thank you gift for handling the paperwork was far
- 46:45Speaker 1: from extravagant. He gave me plastic cups. She joked before adding,
- 46:52Speaker 1: I'm like, wow, I'm glad we didn't work it out. Simpson,
- 47:00Speaker 1: former Cowboys quarterback, dated from seven to nine before she
- 47:04Speaker 1: went on to Mary former NFL star Eric Johnson. They
- 47:09Speaker 1: married in twenty fourteen, and that one didn't work out.
- 47:13Speaker 1: That's correct. They have three children, two sons and a daughter,
- 47:19Speaker 1: and they are not together anymore. So I'm not I'm
- 47:26Speaker 1: not sure why she's glad that it didn't work out
- 47:29Speaker 1: with Tony when it didn't work out with this other
- 47:32Speaker 1: guy either. So I have a feeling that no matter
- 47:36Speaker 1: what former NFL star Jessica Simpson would have married, it
- 47:40Speaker 1: would not have worked out. So that's just me.
- 47:43Speaker 8: I agree with you on that.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Oh, thank you. Let's do some I.
- 47:47Speaker 8: Think that's a fair assessment.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Let's do some birthdays. Uh Checker Walter Koenig from Star

- 51:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, thirty three, man, seems like you should be older,
- 51:06Speaker 1: but you know they started young, right they did?
