- 0:00Well, Tyler Reddick wins again and former Cup series driver
- 0:06Rick Mass and his non driving son Ricky are doing mass cast
- 0:10again. So we're right back with
- 0:11Groundhog Day, right? Right back where we were last
- 0:13week. Well, couple things are
- 0:14different. You got your brand new NASCAR
- 0:16alumni hat, which is I got to say is really cool.
- 0:19That came as came as did you get you a new did you get your new
- 0:23NASCAR alumni stuff, Dad? Yeah, I got all this stuff, man.
- 0:26Hardcore ink pens. Yeti Yeti mug Yeti mug, a bunch
- 0:32of stuff. Cool stuff.
- 0:34OK, you going to NASCAR Alumni weekend in Darlington?
- 0:38Yeah, actually spoke to Amber today.
- 0:42She hits that thing up for everybody and we're going to not
- 0:46sure what all they got planned. I got a bunch of stuff planned
- 0:48out. I think she was trying to get a
- 0:51oh question answer thing going with some drivers and people
- 0:54with the fans, and I think we're probably going to host that down
- 0:59there. So I know we got a parade
- 1:01Saturday morning and then, I don't know, just a bunch of
- 1:03stuff going on. They got planned.
- 1:04I'm not sure what all it is yet, but if I find out, I'll find
- 1:08out. I'll let you know here on Mass
- 1:09Cast before we show up at Darlington.
- 1:11I think that'd be great. I'm going to try to get up to
- 1:14Darlington too, to meet you there if I can.
- 1:16If my schedule between baseball and my family permits, family's
- 1:21probably a little little my little girl, little Stevie's,
- 1:24I'll see if she'll let me go or not.
- 1:26We'll find out. Yeah, I get it.
- 1:28I get it. Yeah.
- 1:30Well, let's get right into it, Dad.
- 1:32Koda, The weekend at Koda. The cup series at Koda.
- 1:34Tyler Reddick wins again. Three in a row to start the
- 1:37season. Never been done before, which is
- 1:40pretty, pretty wild. Pretty cool, actually.
- 1:42It's always cool to see history happen.
- 1:45I mean, unless you're just a Tyler Erdicator, I guess maybe
- 1:48you don't think it's that cool. But personally, I kind of like
- 1:51it. I think it's cool.
- 1:52I like I like that there's parody and you don't know who's
- 1:54going to win each week. But it's also it's fun when
- 1:57somebody's on a heater and you kind of TuneIn each week going
- 2:01like, all right, how long can they keep this thing going or
- 2:05who's going to knock him off? I mean, I went into this weekend
- 2:08probably like everybody else, just assuming SVG is going to
- 2:11run away with it. And the only way he won't is if
- 2:14something happens to him, something happens to his
- 2:16equipment, whatever, he gets caught up in something not of
- 2:19his doing. And that wasn't the case.
- 2:21He he ran second. So what?
- 2:24What were your first first thoughts on the Cup Series over
- 2:27this weekend? Yeah, he got he just SSVG, he
- 2:31just got out ran man. You know, it's pure and simple.
- 2:34I mean, he was fussed about his car not having enough, I guess
- 2:38bite. OK, but he was, you know,
- 2:42Reddick was very impressive. You know, they're talking about
- 2:44three wins in a row. But you know, when you get into
- 2:48the conspiracy people we see on social media talking all that
- 2:53crap and it is crap by the way, because you know, Daytona is
- 2:58just the last lap move. He didn't have a dominant car.
- 3:00Daytona in the last lap or last turn move right won that race
- 3:04and then little bit same Atlanta that the you know, the back
- 3:07straight away the last lap. I mean, he made a move, you
- 3:10know, that just wanting the race and it wasn't really dominant
- 3:13car and Coda was a dominant car. I mean, that was just they they
- 3:18just Flathead. Everybody covered.
- 3:20That car was just man, it was it was dialed in, you know, and he
- 3:24drove, he drove a heck of a race too.
- 3:25I mean, he did he did a good job with all that.
- 3:27But no, I thought it was cool with the deal, the Michael
- 3:31Jordan effect we talked about. I mean, you know, what's so cool
- 3:34is when Jamie Little interviews him, you know, and as a winning
- 3:38car owner, you just, you love seeing his, you see the true
- 3:43emotion. It's true joy.
- 3:44I mean, he, he truly, truly is in happiness.
- 3:49But winning these races. And I had a lot of people come
- 3:52up to me last month or so talk about Michael Jordan's
- 3:54involvement. And, you know, we got to
- 3:56understand he's been there like 5 years or so, you know, kind of
- 3:59been people write about it, talk about it, but nothing to done to
- 4:03the extent that's going on since Daytona because she's winning.
- 4:06And you know, and, and Jamie been able to I guess interview
- 4:11Mike 'cause, you know, he just doesn't do Mike.
- 4:13I mean, he just doesn't do interviews, right.
- 4:15But when he does them, he's just, he's so enthusiastic and
- 4:18so happy. And it goes back.
- 4:20I was talking to my daughter, my wife, your mom and sister a
- 4:23while ago about that. And I said, you know, he he's
- 4:26not unlike any little boy when his little boy, his dad gathers
- 4:32his gathers him up and takes him to the races, right?
- 4:35And that's what used to happen. His dad would take him to the
- 4:37races and he got excited about it and became, you know, a fan
- 4:42of it and, and really just really excited him.
- 4:45You know, I saw a picture the other day on Twitter or X him
- 4:47him this his freshman year at UNC in Charlotte Motor Speedway,
- 4:52stand beside the King, right, And a big old smile on his face.
- 4:55So my my point being what what you see now is Victor Lane
- 4:59ceremonies are when they're talking to him after the race.
- 5:01What you see is is true. It's true emotion, you know, and
- 5:04it's just you just love that. I love that.
- 5:06But when a driver does it, I love it too.
- 5:08I don't like when they get out. Yeah, we want to run the race
- 5:11and think the boys at the shop, right?
- 5:13I hate, I hate that because he says just they're so hard to
- 5:16win, right? And for somebody to have that
- 5:19kind of emotion, whether it's Michael Jordan or or or or or
- 5:23Richard Childress or Rick Hendrick, whoever it is, that's
- 5:25what I love to see. And it just, hey, and by the
- 5:28way, guess what? Michael Jordan's most most known
- 5:31name in the world and showing those true emotions, that part,
- 5:36that part, it was pretty cool. You know, the conspiracy stuff,
- 5:40you see, you don't see a lot of it, but we we do see some.
- 5:44And I know you've seen it, Ricky, the you know, well, yeah,
- 5:47they won lawsuits. That's the payback they get to
- 5:49they get to win races. Well, you know, look at it like
- 5:54I said, look at each race. He didn't have a dominant car,
- 5:56Daytona, he didn't have an Atlanta, but he did he did it
- 5:58coded. But if all that stuff was true
- 6:01and I I was there for a long time and you know, maybe you
- 6:06could get by with this official with nudging this rule a little
- 6:08bit or something back in the day, just little things, but
- 6:11nothing major like giving you a bigger plate or bigger
- 6:14horsepower. Nothing like that would would
- 6:16ever, you know that that would never work.
- 6:19And you know, if, if that was the case, if they if they really
- 6:23manipulated stuff NASCAR did, there's a few years ago we'd had
- 6:28a guy won that would have won a lot of races and a lot of
- 6:31championships. And his name is Della Nort
- 6:33Junior, right? If, if that kind of stuff went
- 6:36on in our sport and, and everybody knows, you know, Dale
- 6:39Junior, most popular driver, if he could have won, you know, if
- 6:43he'd have won 50 or 60 races at a couple of three championships,
- 6:47that would have been a big, big, big, big deal for the sport,
- 6:50right? And ASCAR knew that.
- 6:52But you didn't see any of that happening, right?
- 6:54It's a so anyhow, I just, I guess everybody just has to have
- 6:58something to say, right? Especially on the social media
- 7:02when they get talking that crap. But you know, it is what it is.
- 7:04It's all. Yeah, the conspiracy thing, like
- 7:08if you take just a tone of by itself, the amount of people,
- 7:13the amount of crazy amount of people in coordination, you'd
- 7:15have to have to pull off a conspiracy of give awarding that
- 7:20car the 500. That means that all those other
- 7:22cars on the track have to cooperate too.
- 7:24You got to have the two cars take the white flag just coming
- 7:28out of the Tri Oval and they got to get they got a wreck.
- 7:30Those guys got a wreck and make sure they don't wreck and take
- 7:33out the 45 car at 190 miles an hour.
- 7:36And then you got to have everybody else sitting there
- 7:38getting out of the way of the 45 and reckon just perfectly right
- 7:42there coming into the Tri Oval of the the checkered flag to
- 7:45allow Tyler Reck there. I mean, if you really just start
- 7:47to have some common sense about it or really think about it, I
- 7:51should say it's pretty easy to disprove that in your own mind
- 7:54because it just doesn't, it just doesn't come together.
- 7:57I understand the knee jerk thing of of those, the lawsuit and
- 8:01it's Michael Jordan. So now we're got to we got to
- 8:04let that team win some more, But that's just it's just not it's
- 8:09just not feasible. It's just not realistic at all.
- 8:11I look at it from the other side of it of what a great story.
- 8:15I get why it's a conspiracy because like what a great
- 8:17storyline NASCAR has going right now with all this.
- 8:20I get I so I understand you want to lead while I was planting.
- 8:23Now it's not it you just you just can't it just of the three,
- 8:27I'll tell you this, of the three races, the only way if you even
- 8:30had some big conspiracy remake the 45 car that much better than
- 8:33everybody else's, it had to been at CODA yesterday.
- 8:36You couldn't do it at Daytona and you couldn't do it Atlanta.
- 8:38Well, that's the thing, Rick, you did.
- 8:40Yeah, I look back at winning streaks at our sport.
- 8:42Richard Petty had ten of them, ten in a row in 1967.
- 8:45It just one of those deals. The fact that that that car when
- 8:50they went to the 1968 season, they went back to that 67
- 8:55Plymouth Fury and ran it in 68 because that woman took the car
- 8:59was so good. But anyhow, you know, you look
- 9:01back at Gordon one those four in a row, whatever it was Harry
- 9:04Gant 145 in a row that time and those those were dominant races.
- 9:08When those guys did that, you know, they were at, you know,
- 9:11they were at the short tracks, the mid tracks or whatever, and
- 9:14they were just dominating. You know, Now if Reddit goes out
- 9:17next two or three weeks and dominate, dominates what he did
- 9:20at Cody, yeah, we got a whole different story we're going to
- 9:22be talking about. But you know, he just had, he
- 9:24won three races, but only one of them, one of them that he
- 9:27dominated and probably should have won.
- 9:30The other two, you know, he just put himself in a position.
- 9:32So, you know, it's just all, I guess, just everybody likes to
- 9:35talk. Well, and even if somebody
- 9:37wheels off a bunch of wins in a row, like you mentioned Harry
- 9:41and there's a conspiracy theory they're cheating or something.
- 9:44Well, like in Harry and Andy Petrie's case, they hit on
- 9:46something with the car that nobody else had figured out yet
- 9:49and it wasn't illegal, right? I don't think it was at the
- 9:52time. It's something nobody ever
- 9:53thought of it. It was innovative and Harry Hall
- 9:56of Fame driver. So they Crucci find something
- 9:59that they could capitalize on and he had a driver that's
- 10:01capable to do the right things with it.
- 10:04And you have that combo and you you go on a window streak and
- 10:07there's not there's no conspiracy there.
- 10:09There's nothing. Again, to my knowledge, I'm not
- 10:12mechanically all that smart, but there wasn't it wasn't illegal.
- 10:17I mean, that was just that was a a great combo of crew chief and
- 10:21the the guys setting up the car, building the car, finding
- 10:24something and having the right driver in place to take it the
- 10:27proper or make the most of it, take advantage of it.
- 10:30So and that's that's, that's that's greatness that's
- 10:34happening that you're witnessing.
- 10:35So I kind of look at it like, man, I can't wait to see in
- 10:38Phoenix next week. Can these guys somehow put
- 10:41together another one? Can they be the first of four in
- 10:44a row? If it's not them, who's going to
- 10:45be the first team? It's not the the 45 car is 2311
- 10:52as an organization like is is what Bubba goes out there wins
- 10:55this week. I don't know it just to me, it's
- 10:57a great storyline. It's a great narrative.
- 10:59And I'm, you know, the, the conspiracy thing, I don't know,
- 11:02it's just. That brings up a thought I had
- 11:06going by. We're talking about Harry when
- 11:08he won all those races. When you're talking about camber
- 11:10to rear ends, right, people? They're the first ones to come
- 11:14up with the camber to rear end and it made a big difference.
- 11:17Well, I'm going to tell you a little something, how I think
- 11:19this all came about. I think I was witness to this,
- 11:22didn't realize it after the fact, but we used to race for
- 11:25Skoll, Man, twice a year, Once a year.
- 11:28Or they would take us twice a year to these places or
- 11:30Skollwood. They had a place in Florida and
- 11:33they had a place in Watch Hill, RI.
- 11:35And they would always take the drivers, which by the time was
- 11:38me, Harry Gant, AJ Foytz, Nick Perdome.
- 11:41And then it'd be the top, top executives of the company,
- 11:44right? And you know, the wives.
- 11:47And it's a week of decadence, man.
- 11:48It was a cool deal. Yeah.
- 11:49We were sitting around and was in Watch Hill, RI, that big old
- 11:52mansion one day he was sitting around talking and and the the
- 11:56the radio tire had just been introduced into our sport,
- 11:59right? I hadn't been here very long and
- 12:02I remember sitting there, we're all sitting around there talking
- 12:05and I remember Leo, Leo Jackson, OK, he owned Harry Gatz team.
- 12:11He asked AJ said AJ, what do you think of these reported?
- 12:13Y'all been running these radios for a long time and your
- 12:15Indycars are a lot longer, He says.
- 12:17Man, we're having a lot of trouble with these things.
- 12:20What's the deal? They just says, well, the one
- 12:23thing I could tell you is you cannot run them on the edge.
- 12:26They do not like me to run on the edge.
- 12:27In other words, they don't run, they don't like me run on the
- 12:30outside radius or outside corner.
- 12:33To try to simplify that for everybody.
- 12:36You look at the front end of a race car and you see the right
- 12:38front is really, it's got a lot of negative camber in it.
- 12:41The wheels totally is pulled in at the top and that's to resist
- 12:45the forces when you're in the turn, it loads right, front tire
- 12:48tries to straighten it back up right.
- 12:50And we've heard over the years put more camber, You know, the
- 12:53guys blowing out tires, of course they're running too much
- 12:55camber in the right front, heating the inside edge too
- 12:58much. Well, anyhow, from that I think
- 13:05Leo, just listen to that. The next thing you know, Harry's
- 13:08out there out running everybody. They got a camber in the rear
- 13:11end, right? So I always put it together that
- 13:15Leo sat there and heard that from her, from AJ said, oh,
- 13:18can't run that tire on the edge. All right, well, that means we
- 13:20need to run make sure we got a camera right in the front.
- 13:23What we do about the rear because it's always going to be
- 13:25running on that edge, on the outside edge, right?
- 13:28We'll just try to put camber and see what that does.
- 13:30And anyhow, that's a story that doesn't get circulated very much
- 13:35about how that works. I need to talk to a couple other
- 13:37people to make sure my train is right on it.
- 13:40But generally, that's what happened with that deal.
- 13:42And I always thought it was pretty cool.
- 13:45I sat there and listened to it. But none of us were smart enough
- 13:47to pick up on what AJ said. Leo Jackson was a genius, and he
- 13:51was smart enough to sit there and like, OK, all right, he just
- 13:54told me what I need to do. Us dumb asses weed.
- 13:56The rest of us didn't know. But anyhow, it is what it is.
- 14:01Well, yeah, y'all were busy with the the week of Decadence, as
- 14:06you called it. That's good.
- 14:07I love that word decadence. That's always a fun one.
- 14:10You'd use that one more. What?
- 14:12Dude, they come, they come, they just go in this big match and
- 14:14then you get up at 6 O clock in the morning because they had to
- 14:17be on the golf course at 7:00 or 7:30.
- 14:19But before that you sit down at the big table and these all
- 14:22these people waited on you and brought you big old breakfast
- 14:25and food, everything you could imagine.
- 14:27Then you go play golf at morning, you come back to the
- 14:29house and you sit down and have this big elaborate lunch bill
- 14:33for you. Then when that was over with, I
- 14:35remember the first time up there, Sharon and I looked
- 14:37around after lunch. We couldn't find anybody, right.
- 14:39Where the Hell's everybody at? Well, we kind of got the look
- 14:42and where everybody's taking naps.
- 14:43We're like, oh, so rich people take naps in the afternoon.
- 14:47So anyhow, then then at supper time, and that was elaborate
- 14:50thing, you get served this. Gosh, it's just so elaborate and
- 14:53just it was decadence, man. It was just decadence.
- 14:56You didn't have to do anything. Just lay back and let them feed
- 14:58you, entertain you. But that's, you know, those were
- 15:02the days. Well, this sounds like when you
- 15:04and mom came down here and stayed Christmas with us.
- 15:07It's. Sort of like that.
- 15:09You woke up every morning, you had a big fancy breakfast cooked
- 15:12on my Blackstone. We did.
- 15:14We did leftovers or sandwiches for lunch occasionally.
- 15:17You get a good meal. Yeah.
- 15:19That's good. That's good.
- 15:21No, I think the, the street thing to me, I kind of I was
- 15:24kind of thinking about, I come back to something Chase Elliott
- 15:28said when they did the press conference announcing that the
- 15:31the Chase was back in the in the points format.
- 15:34And he said, you know, enjoy what we have.
- 15:36And of course he meant that as kind of overarching statement.
- 15:39But to me, I'm like, man, you're witnessing history right now.
- 15:42If you're a NASCAR fan. We just witnessed somebody's
- 15:45never, nobody's ever won three races in a row to start the
- 15:48season. I can't remember.
- 15:49I think it was maybe Kyle Petty or somebody put on social media
- 15:52and he started going through, you know, he's like Red Byron,
- 15:56Rex White, Curtis Turner, Tim Flock, you know, Ned Jarrett,
- 16:04David Pearson, the King, Dale Earnhardt, senior, Jeff Gore and
- 16:08Jimmy Johnson, Kyle Busch. Nobody's ever done that before
- 16:12now. It just happened now for the
- 16:13first time. And if you start thinking about
- 16:15in those terms, it's like, man, you're witnessing history.
- 16:18Like just enjoy it and see, see what happens.
- 16:20That's the fun part of it now is we got such a school narrative
- 16:24or a unique narrative to start the season.
- 16:27I, I think I didn't, I haven't listened, I haven't had a chance
- 16:30to listen to Denny's latest podcast yet, but I did see a
- 16:34clip on social media where he was kind of talking about how,
- 16:37hey, we've got with the new points format, we've kind of got
- 16:39this cool narrative going now to start the season.
- 16:42And it's not all about knee jerking over who's automatically
- 16:46in the chase and who hidden and, and, and on and on.
- 16:48It's you've got a, a narrative of like, well, now Reddick as
- 16:52the points leader again, we talked about this last week.
- 16:55For me personally, it's it's too early for me to start looking at
- 16:58points, but you do think of like, well, hey, he's already
- 17:01kind of built up enough of a lead three weeks into where he
- 17:04can afford to have a misstep or two here along the way and still
- 17:08be still be pretty solid for the chase.
- 17:10So but it comes back to just the the greatness thing and
- 17:12witnessing history. And I, I like that.
- 17:14I like that you could show up each week not know who's going
- 17:17to win. I like it when somebody's on a
- 17:18heater right now and you want to see can they keep it going or
- 17:21who's going to knock them off? It's it's all, it's all good.
- 17:25It's kind of like the king here. Not too long ago, I think we
- 17:28talked about it, how there's not like that we don't have that one
- 17:31top dog or whoever to chase right now.
- 17:34And I don't know that we still do in the grand scheme of
- 17:36things, but this is kind of like another little mini version of
- 17:38that. You know, you kind of chasing
- 17:40somebody, somebody's got nobody. We're three weeks into the
- 17:44season. We're about to be a month in the
- 17:45season only only one guy and one team of one races, you know, not
- 17:48counting the the clash, of course, with priests.
- 17:51So just sit back and enjoy it. I, I, I certainly am.
- 17:54I think it's a testament to that team too, that, you know, they
- 17:58were in the right place at at Daytona and Atlanta, but then
- 18:02they were ready for different kind of tracks the next week at
- 18:04Coda. So I, I back to the MJ thing
- 18:07just for a second. I think I, I agree with what you
- 18:11said. I love his enthusiasm.
- 18:12I loved his comments to Jamie. He's like, you know, I just put
- 18:16up the money. I'm I'm, you know, and I'm, I'm
- 18:18a competitor. I love that.
- 18:20And I loved at the very end when she asked him if he was going to
- 18:22be a phoenix, He's like, oh, you know, I'm going to be a phoenix.
- 18:25Like I just, I love that. I thought that was just such a
- 18:27cool thing. And again, it comes back to he's
- 18:29just in genuinely, the man is the most famous athlete on the
- 18:32planet. He's a billionaire.
- 18:34He can be anywhere doing anything he wants to every
- 18:38Sunday. He could be anywhere on this
- 18:39planet. He's got enough money.
- 18:41He could be somewhere not on this planet at this point if he
- 18:43wanted to be on a Sunday. I mean, that's literally true.
- 18:47But that's where he's at. Where has he been?
- 18:48His last three weekends? He's been at the racetrack and
- 18:50he's been celebrating and it's it's great for everybody.
- 18:53It's great for him. It's great for the sport and
- 18:56we're talking about the team owner Tyler Reddick to me has
- 18:59been the same that same way in Victory Lane each week.
- 19:02You can see he I don't feel like he's doing the the guys back at
- 19:05the shop thing. I feel like he's still fired up
- 19:07and he should be. I would think for him
- 19:09especially, it's got to be coming off of everything that he
- 19:12dealt with in his personal life last year.
- 19:15You're sitting there, you're not winning, first of all, but then
- 19:17more importantly, you're your new child, your newborn child,
- 19:22your baby, your baby sitting there going through tumors and
- 19:25having to have tumors removed and to go from that.
- 19:29To. Kid is healthy and you're out
- 19:32here winning and have a start like this and you win a race and
- 19:35that's got to be something you get out of your car you win a
- 19:37race and then you look over and there's Michael Jordan just with
- 19:40this big giant grin just waiting big giant grin just waiting to
- 19:44pick you up and high five you and everything so I I I as right
- 19:48it's just fun we're in we're at a great great start the season
- 19:51and the MJ effect is I'm seeing more and more on social media.
- 19:55I see accounts I've said it before I'll say it again you see
- 19:58accounts that otherwise never be talking about NASCAR and they're
- 20:02talking about NASCAR though the picture by the way, kudos to
- 20:08whoever's on the social media team for Tyler Reddick in 2311.
- 20:12The picture of the side by side of Tyler Reddick where he's.
- 20:16Imitate Michael Jordan, where he's got his trophy and he's
- 20:18holding up three fingers next to Jordan.
- 20:20Yeah. And I saw that.
- 20:21Brilliant. It got a lot of lot of traction,
- 20:24a lot of coverage and and it's great.
- 20:27So you're you're getting in front of people you wouldn't
- 20:29normally get in front of. And by the way, the whole
- 20:32marketing campaign is still aimed at the core fan, if you
- 20:34ask me the hell yeah thing. So you kind of getting best of
- 20:38both worlds. I think right now from marketing
- 20:40perspective, they're just, yeah, they're they're in a great spot
- 20:433 weeks in great narrative. Maybe it is a conspiracy.
- 20:46It's everything's going so well. Maybe it's all big grandstand
- 20:48conspiracy, Dad. Maybe we're wrong.
- 20:50The hell it could be, but I don't know how in the hell you
- 20:52put all that together to happen like.
- 20:54I don't either. I try to do conspiracy stuff and
- 20:58I can't ever make it work for me.
- 20:59So. But inhale it was, Yeah.
- 21:02And again, it goes back, man. And little boy, Daddy takes him
- 21:04to the races when his little boy and he gets thralled with her,
- 21:07just thrilled with it. And you know, he stays with it.
- 21:10So, you know, cool story for us, cool story for NASCAR.
- 21:14Let's go back for just before before we leave, before we leave
- 21:17code, a couple of things. That thing must have been hot.
- 21:20I mean, that track Brut must be brutal physically somehow.
- 21:24There's some tracks you go to there.
- 21:26You just get hot in the race car, right?
- 21:29Brickyard is that way. You lose long straightaways and
- 21:32you're sitting there hammering and exhaust is against the
- 21:35floorboard. There's something about the
- 21:36Brickyard. The cars were extremely hot, but
- 21:39it must be something about Coda because those guys were dropping
- 21:42out yesterday. Minded me when the when the TV
- 21:45showed all the digger laying on the ground, right and they just
- 21:48kind of panned at him for a second or two.
- 21:51Then they went away. We didn't hear anything more
- 21:52about it till later on. I'm like, well, I guess he's OK.
- 21:56And then of course Bowman had to get out of the car and you could
- 22:00tell the interviews those guys were wiped out and then they
- 22:03showed. Did you see that one as, as, as
- 22:06the winner, right? Riddick was walking up the the
- 22:08steps. Victory Lane man, he couldn't
- 22:10hardly make it up. He, he was having trouble.
- 22:12And I'm like, yeah, I've been there before, guys.
- 22:14I know what you're what you feel, what you're feeling right
- 22:16now, right? And, and it's like, OK, that
- 22:19thing must be pretty tough. The, the temperature or
- 22:21something was going on yesterday or Sunday that created all that.
- 22:25So, you know, that's part of the that's part of the deal.
- 22:28It's the one thing I noticed. I tell you, the other thing that
- 22:29went on that disturbed me a little bit was Chase Briscoe's
- 22:35crew chief and about am I right here?
- 22:39Yeah, yeah, yeah. When he had to come in the pits,
- 22:43a wheel fell off or whatever happened to that thing and he
- 22:45had come in and couldn't figure out where to go.
- 22:47And James Small, his crew chiefs, said you should have
- 22:50read AF and map. Well, Ricky, I all the years I
- 22:55raced, you know, being my crew chiefs or whoever's on the
- 22:57radio, even spotters, you know, we would get crossed up.
- 23:01Those things happen. You get crossed up and you kind
- 23:05of say things, do things maybe they didn't really mean or you
- 23:07wish you could take it back or whatever.
- 23:09But in all the years that I raced, I never had a personal
- 23:14attack like that, right? I mean, we get to fuss at each
- 23:18other and argue or whatever, but you never crossed the line and
- 23:21made it personal. If, and I'm not sure what their
- 23:24dynamic is, I know they've been running fast, man.
- 23:27They got a fast race car. Small does a hell of a job at
- 23:29that race car. And of course, Briscoe, we know
- 23:31what he does, the wins he had last year and the way he's
- 23:34running this year. But just as a side note, you
- 23:38know, if a crew chief probably would ever say something like
- 23:41that to me, you know, you know, when, when the race is over, me
- 23:46and the crew chief are going to sit down by ourselves, right?
- 23:50Either in the lounge or beside the holler or somewhere.
- 23:53And we're going to have a come to Jesus meeting, right?
- 23:56We're going to understand each other that we don't we don't get
- 23:59personal like that. I'm not.
- 24:01And again, that's their deal, you know, but I thought it was
- 24:03just something that when I heard of them, like and I got to
- 24:07thinking, OK, Rick, put yourself in Briscoe's position.
- 24:11When did that ever happened to you?
- 24:13Never did. All right, What would you how
- 24:15would you react? And I know how to react it to
- 24:18that. So, you know, I'm not really
- 24:20sure what that was all about this frustration on smallest
- 24:23part, but that's a tough one, man.
- 24:26You got to be careful, that kind of thing.
- 24:28You got to be very, very careful.
- 24:29You, you tear your team down, you know, So hopefully got it
- 24:34worked out. Anyhow, just a couple things I
- 24:36want to talk about. Yeah, I'm glad.
- 24:38I'm glad you brought both of those up.
- 24:40So I I thought the same thing when I heard that comment from
- 24:44from James Small, because I thought about you.
- 24:46I'm like, Hey, I know none of your crew chiefs ever said
- 24:52anything like that. I mean, and I wasn't sitting
- 24:54there glued to the radio every week, but I knew all your crew
- 24:56chiefs. I knew none of them.
- 24:58I listened enough and I knew enough about them even as a kid
- 25:00to know that none of them would have ever done that.
- 25:04And I know you well enough to know that that that wouldn't
- 25:07have been received well had they done it.
- 25:08But it wasn't even a it just they wouldn't have done that.
- 25:11You know, and I but I also was wondering, I'm like, I don't I
- 25:14don't know if anybody in dad's day, in your day, if any crew
- 25:18chief would have done that to a driver.
- 25:19I don't know. I don't feel like they would
- 25:21have. I was trying to think in my head
- 25:23like would have would have would Andy Petrie have yelled at Harry
- 25:27would have Kurt with Kurt Selbydean yelled at Dale
- 25:30Earnhardt senior. You know, would I mean take your
- 25:35pick here? I don't you know, you we all
- 25:36know the like, I don't know Todd Parrott.
- 25:40Would he have yelled at at Dale like that?
- 25:43I don't know. He would have been not not like
- 25:45that. No, he wouldn't have.
- 25:47He wouldn't have done that. I'm not not that.
- 25:49Duh. That's a personal attack, right?
- 25:52Yeah. You can argue about you ain't
- 25:53driving it hard enough. You ain't doing this, you're not
- 25:55doing that or whatever. You know, you wrong line or
- 25:58you're giving us bad information or you know, whatever, but you
- 26:02don't step over the line with a personal talk about your
- 26:05intelligence basically is what that's about right?
- 26:08Or your your lack of what he's telling him.
- 26:10Is he very smart? Or you know, he's, he's not
- 26:13prepared to race, you know, which is both of them are total
- 26:15bullshit. If you know, cuz that's really
- 26:17basically what he said to him. OK.
- 26:20And but no, that's the line you just shouldn't cross.
- 26:23But I'm sure, I'm sure by now they've probably already
- 26:26addressed that and it's, it's water over the bridge or under
- 26:29the bridge, you know, So just something.
- 26:32I do wonder if if generally speaking, if crew chief driver
- 26:36dynamics are just how different they are now as opposed to when
- 26:41you erase them because it feels like, it feels like to me it's
- 26:46some combination of crew chiefs have crew chief was obviously
- 26:51always been vitally important since the beginning.
- 26:54So I'm not saying the importance has changed, but it does kind of
- 26:57seem like the, the power balance has changed a little bit where
- 27:05I'm trying to be careful with how I'm saying this.
- 27:07But in some cases, it's almost like the crew chiefs maybe could
- 27:11perceive themselves or some of them might be perceived as
- 27:15almost even more important than the driver, as crazy as that is
- 27:18to say, even say out loud. I, I don't know, it just seems
- 27:21like there's different dynamics and then the type, the driver
- 27:24personalities are just so different.
- 27:27It's just so hard for me to imagine.
- 27:29And not just you, it's just hard for me to imagine that
- 27:31particular comment, a personal comment like that going out over
- 27:36the radio. Now look, here's the other side
- 27:37of them. We've played the flip side of
- 27:39the coin here. It wasn't like when you were
- 27:42driving. We had social media and we had
- 27:44all 40 radios where every single thing was recorded and could be
- 27:48possibly clipped and put online or on TV or on the radio at any
- 27:52second. So I guess it would be kind of
- 27:55crazy of us to assume nobody ever said something personal to
- 27:58their driver during your entire time.
- 28:00It's just hard for me. Imagine who?
- 28:02Who that would have been? I guess I just, I hear my mind
- 28:06going, Tony, did Tony Glover yell at Sterling Marlins?
- 28:10But I just can't see it, you know, it's just hard for me to
- 28:12see it. Well, it could have.
- 28:14I mean, I'm sure it probably did happen.
- 28:16I'm just saying it didn't happen to me and I've never heard about
- 28:19it with anybody else, right? So what that means is if it did
- 28:22happen to somebody else, it was taking taken care of internally
- 28:26right soon as the race is over, because that's how you deal with
- 28:28stuff like that. You know, you deal with it right
- 28:30then and get it, get it over with and then go on.
- 28:33You know, so just just interesting to say it's an
- 28:35interesting thing. We'll see how that we'll see how
- 28:38that we'll just watch how that relationship goes all year.
- 28:40Now they might come out and win the next seven in a row.
- 28:42Kudos to them if they do, because obviously small is
- 28:45talented. He knows how he does what to do
- 28:47with that race car. You know, we know Briscoe can
- 28:49drive. So, you know, I'm not not really
- 28:51trying to knock in. I'm just thinking about what,
- 28:53you know, what, how I how I would have reacted and how
- 28:57things, and maybe you're right, maybe things a little bit
- 29:00different. Maybe the dynamics now between
- 29:02the driver and crew chief are a little different than it was a
- 29:04few years ago. But it doesn't matter.
- 29:06Still human beings and the personalities are the same.
- 29:08That doesn't change. Yeah, it's true.
- 29:11Well, it will be interesting to follow him because that's a team
- 29:13that you would assume is is you coming into the season.
- 29:17You're assuming that's a team that's contending for a
- 29:18championship. Oh yeah.
- 29:20Oh. Yeah, so, so it'll be definitely
- 29:21be 1 to 1 to follow. And to your point on the how the
- 29:25heat and everything must have been getting to him yesterday, I
- 29:29was thinking about I have still. I know it exists.
- 29:32I don't know if it's in a old issue Winston Cup scene.
- 29:35Maybe I'll have to ask our buddy Rick Houston if he can find it
- 29:39in his archives. But the story is printed and I
- 29:43believe it was during Kenny Wallace's course.
- 29:45This is on mass cast on Kenny Wallace media.
- 29:47It was during Kenny Wallace's rookie year in the Cup Series
- 29:51and I believe it was after race in Dover.
- 29:55I don't again, don't know if it's Winston Cup scene, but it
- 29:57was definitely printed somewhere where somebody observed after
- 30:00the race. You're sitting there at the end
- 30:03of your your hall or eating a Bologna sandwich, as you often
- 30:06did back in those days and still do, I guess.
- 30:08I guess you, I'm presuming you still like a good Bologna
- 30:10sandwich. I don't know.
- 30:12But one of those hot days at Dover and you're sitting there
- 30:15eating a Bologna sandwich. You look over and Kenny was over
- 30:17there at his hall. I guess they all parked next to
- 30:19each other and he's over there puking and you apparently,
- 30:22according to the article, just were taken.
- 30:24Took a bite of your baloney sandwich and we're sitting there
- 30:26going. I remember those days kept
- 30:29beating your So that article exists somewhere.
- 30:34So whatever Kenny's rookie year was, I don't know, 93 somewhere
- 30:38in there. It's it exists somewhere and I
- 30:40would love to find it just so we could rehash it and talk to to
- 30:44Kenny about it, because I always I was like that story.
- 30:47But that's not to say you were never a victim of the heat
- 30:50either. All you guys were another point.
- 30:52I mean, I mean that's I don't know how y'all did it that
- 30:55that's that's tough stuff. You'd lose what on average 10
- 30:59lbs water at a race. You got about, Yeah, yeah.
- 31:02That it was. It was Funny Band in those days,
- 31:04how it worked. I remember one of the first
- 31:06races I ever ran this was in with Travis.
- 31:09I mean, we ran a couple races, but I remember the first time I
- 31:11went to run the world 600, I forget it was Travis.
- 31:15God, it was hot that day, 600 miles.
- 31:17I mean, it was just torture, torture.
- 31:20I remember getting out of the car and the race is over and it
- 31:22looked like behind me, and I've told this story many times.
- 31:24I looked up down pit Rd. looked like a deer slaughter man.
- 31:27Drivers were laying out all over the garage here and the medics
- 31:30were running around, you know, trying to cool them off.
- 31:32And then in case you ended up going getting Ivs and all that
- 31:35stuff, I'm like, goodness gracious, this is torture out
- 31:38here today, right? And so you just kind of learned
- 31:42over time, you know, and I had, I had trouble with that early on
- 31:45a little bit, you know, because I was, I was used to 200 mile
- 31:48races, the Bush grill National Series.
- 31:51And all of a sudden you thrown in the 500 laps at Dover, right?
- 31:54And that's, that's an awakening experience.
- 31:56So what you got to do, what you got to do physically to get
- 31:59ready to be able to withstand that.
- 32:01And I saw article the other day somebody was talking about Neil
- 32:04Bonnett. Somebody was eating eating
- 32:07supper with near Bonnett the night before a race somewhere
- 32:10and he was eating a prime rib and a big baked potato and had a
- 32:14yeast roll. They were talking about, they
- 32:17said Neil bonnets. They were getting on Neil about
- 32:19his eating eating habits. He said, well, he said, no, it's
- 32:22no problem. He said, you know that baked
- 32:24potato, He said that'll kick in about the last 100 laps, right?
- 32:28And then other people talking about somebody this week talked
- 32:32about, you know, that if you're a Turkey or a chicken, if you're
- 32:35fat, it takes a lot longer to cook you.
- 32:37So you if you lean, you get cooked real quick.
- 32:39So all the guys getting too skinny driving these race cars.
- 32:42I mean, I, we get into a whole another world there with all
- 32:46that stuff. But I was fortunate.
- 32:48The guy athletic training at University of Virginia named Joe
- 32:51Geek. He's still around, very
- 32:53respected athletic trainer in that world, right.
- 32:56And he, he basically in 1990 or 89, maybe it was 89.
- 33:00Set me up the program, you know, that I, I followed religiously
- 33:04through my whole career and kind of fixed me, kind of fixed my
- 33:07deal from the early, early good ones on to try to figure out how
- 33:12to, how to be as sharp at the 500 lap markers, yards, first
- 33:15lap markers. That's the deal, man.
- 33:16You can, you can get tired or whatever.
- 33:18Yeah, or if you give completely out, you know, then you know you
- 33:22got a bad problem, but you know, you got to be as good to 505
- 33:26hundredth mile as you are the first mile, right.
- 33:29And in those days, man, 5 or 600 miles at some of these race
- 33:32tracks was just absolutely murder the heat in the cars and
- 33:38you know, it was hard to be just as good as at the end as you as
- 33:41you were at the first. I finally got there.
- 33:42I finally got that figured out physically and mentally how to
- 33:45do that. And so evidently when I saw
- 33:50Kenny puke and I must have been on the upside of all that.
- 33:53But then, so that's pretty cool story.
- 33:55You were well into you were years into Joe Geek's plan for
- 33:59you at that point. Yeah.
- 34:02What? Well, for the for the mass cast
- 34:04listeners. Listeners.
- 34:05What was that? That regiment that he had, John,
- 34:07I remember what it was. I remember watching you.
- 34:09But what was it? Well, it was basically an hour
- 34:11and 20 minutes every day and it was, it consists of consistent
- 34:16really of stretching, right? You get yourself warmed up and
- 34:19stretching at the end. But it was my deal was
- 34:22cardiovascular, you know, I didn't need a muscle mass,
- 34:24right? Some of the guys had to work
- 34:26with muscles, you know, like Mark.
- 34:29Mark worked real hard with that and he still does.
- 34:32And kudos to him for all that too.
- 34:34I always admired him for his, his stubbornness to stick with
- 34:37that stuff the way he did and the way he still does.
- 34:40But but anyhow, my deal was, and I can't remember exactly, I
- 34:43should remember how I lived it for 10 years, but it was 35 or
- 34:4840 minutes running on a treadmill up, way up in there
- 34:52wide open. That was a big thing was you're
- 34:54running with me. Then it was just a series of a
- 34:56series of, of, of exercises, push ups setups, you know, some,
- 35:00some back and leg muscle strengthening things that I did
- 35:06and it would end up, it would end up with stretching again,
- 35:10right. But it was an hour and 20
- 35:11minutes. How long this whole thing took
- 35:13me and I did it, you know, I did it night day.
- 35:15I did it everywhere. Was that he was race tracks.
- 35:17I would get out and do it or try to freeze at a motel.
- 35:19I tried to do it at the gym, just whatever tried to do or
- 35:21would try to do. A lot of times you couldn't do
- 35:23it. But that was that was the main
- 35:25thing we stuck to. Well, correct me if I'm wrong,
- 35:28but weren't you always wearing a full long sleeve and long pants
- 35:32sweat suit and making it as hot as you could in the room?
- 35:35Do that. Oh.
- 35:35Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 35:37We didn't use air conditioner, man.
- 35:38No, it was a heavy sweat suit, right?
- 35:41And, you know, clothes heavily because basically what I was
- 35:45trying to do with myself, because not everybody's the
- 35:47same. But my idea was getting my body
- 35:49acclimated to the heat, right? Two things.
- 35:52Get my body acclimated to the heat and get my cardiovascular
- 35:57system working, making it carry the oxygen cells to throughout
- 36:01my body better. Right.
- 36:02That that's kind of was that was the two main things that I
- 36:05worked on and you know it works. Yeah, I that's the my, my main
- 36:11image I have I can remember of you and your workouts is being
- 36:15that full heavy sweat suit, full long sleeve heavy sweat suit.
- 36:20And by the time you're done, I mean, you just be absolutely,
- 36:23completely drenched and sweat. But it makes sense.
- 36:27That's what you're having to get your body ready for.
- 36:30I thought it was interesting if you if you watched or listened
- 36:32to mass cast last week. I was talking about Tyler
- 36:35Reddick came to visit us at my job with the Braves and he was
- 36:39my guest on behind the Braves. Actually, if you if you want to
- 36:42hear my interview with Tyler Redick, check out Behind the
- 36:44Braves. When you're done listening to
- 36:45Mass cast, you can hop over and listen to that.
- 36:48We had a good time, but after the the podcast was over and
- 36:52before his appearance at the ballpark, we took him and his
- 36:55and the crew, the entourage he had with him on a little little
- 36:59VIP tour of the ballpark with the with the time that we had,
- 37:02we didn't have time for a full ballpark tour.
- 37:04We took him down into the players clubhouse, which is the
- 37:07locker room for people who don't follow baseball.
- 37:10It's in baseball. We call the locker room, the
- 37:12clubhouse and took him back through where our players like
- 37:17where the the kitchen is or their their chef is, their
- 37:21lounge, their workout facility and then the training room.
- 37:25And Tyler himself even said the thing he was most kind of amped
- 37:30up and geeked up to see was he was looking at the training room
- 37:33because he said this is where I spend most of my time when I'm
- 37:35at airspeed, which 2311 shop. And he was noticing the like the
- 37:42setup of the Braves, like hot tub and cold tub.
- 37:44And he's like, I'm going to text our owners right now and tell
- 37:46them this is this is a setup we need.
- 37:48Ours is great, but it needs to be like this one.
- 37:50But I just thought that was so interesting that him, that was
- 37:52the part he was. So that was the more he was most
- 37:55excited to see because this is where I spend most of my time
- 37:58when I'm at the shop is right here.
- 38:01So I just thought that was, that was interesting just how times
- 38:04have have changed. And I mean, I don't know how it
- 38:07was back when you were racing. We lived here in Virginia, you
- 38:09know, and all the shops were in Charlotte.
- 38:11So I, I don't know that shops had the, I doubt they had the
- 38:15workout and training facilities that they, they have now or
- 38:17anything close to it. I don't know.
- 38:19Yeah, they started putting those things into.
- 38:21It was really for the team members.
- 38:23They they were doing that in the 90s, but I remember when that
- 38:27thing started with all these teams, but it's really for the
- 38:29crew members and a lot of it was over the wall guys, but it
- 38:32really was for everybody on that team.
- 38:33But you never find a driver and they're doing it.
- 38:35If they were doing it, they're doing it secretly, right?
- 38:38Not telling anybody. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:41No, it was a didn't, didn't you tell a story.
- 38:43I think you've told a story a couple times about Harry Gant's
- 38:45workout routine and the and the the pull ups when he do some
- 38:50when. Yeah.
- 38:51Well, it wasn't a pull up. He supposedly he'd always he'd
- 38:55fussed everybody for I always talking about the workouts, the
- 38:58routines and Harry said, oh y'all do y'all boys just stay
- 39:01tough. He ain't tough like me, right?
- 39:02And that was but you know, Pecky his wife meant one time he hit
- 39:07had some kind of big, big hunk of metal, she said.
- 39:10Must have been part of a motor, she says, sitting beside his
- 39:13recliner. And he'd sit there all night
- 39:14sitting there recliner watching TV, doing curls with his arms,
- 39:18picking that piece of metal up. And I was watching TV.
- 39:22But now Harry was just a physical specimen man.
- 39:25He that watch Hill, RI where we were talking about where we
- 39:28learned about the camber, right and went in the basement that
- 39:31thing one time he jumped up and grabbed 2 two to twelve floor
- 39:34joists, you know, like this like like that.
- 39:38He didn't reach over top. He just grabbed him and sit
- 39:40there and pulled himself up 10 times.
- 39:42I'm like, OK, I don't think anybody ever wants the best with
- 39:46this man. You know, you think about that.
- 39:48You just clamp with your thumb and your hands, you pull
- 39:50yourself up. That was that was pretty
- 39:53spectacular. Let's put it that way.
- 39:54Is. That what you would call country
- 39:56strong. That was that was a freak of
- 39:59nature. Strong is what that is.
- 40:01Yes, yes. Yeah.
- 40:04That's it's interesting to see how that that whole side of
- 40:07things has evolved through time and again.
- 40:09I just got a kick out of out of seeing Reddit kind of being most
- 40:12amped up to see like how a different sport like their their
- 40:16recovery room, their training room and the and the workout
- 40:19facilities. I thought that was pretty.
- 40:20Pretty interesting, man. Not everybody's the same, right?
- 40:23Back in my day, there's plenty of guys never, never did
- 40:26anything right and could do just fine.
- 40:28Then there's other guys that had to, you know, like myself about
- 40:31mid pack midway, you know, you had to do a lot of stuff and
- 40:34there's some guys you know, that had to really make it, you know,
- 40:38almost religious activity to do it, to be able to make it, you
- 40:41know, so everybody, everybody's built different.
- 40:43I'm sure it's still same today. The problem is you can't get
- 40:46away with it if you're, if you're physically not good at
- 40:49the end with the way they've got everything right now going, you
- 40:52know, all the, the technical part of that of racing now where
- 40:57they know every single thing that's happening, even with all
- 40:59the telemetry and the stuff that's going off the drivers,
- 41:01you know, if the drivers, you know, if he's only 80% of
- 41:04himself during the race, they'll know that, right?
- 41:06And they'll, they'll, they'll address that and the drivers
- 41:09going to have to address it. So I I don't know without
- 41:11knowing how that works now, but I guarantee you if the drivers
- 41:15got a fatigue problem, they don't know about it, It's going
- 41:17to be addressed. Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 41:22Well, I did want to get into we can talk about Phoenix, but I do
- 41:26I want to talk at least touch briefly on the Gibbs gay part
- 41:30lawsuit. We talked a little bit about it
- 41:32last week and it's it's continuing on.
- 41:37I, I was thinking about this after, after mass cast and I
- 41:40started reading some more and the, you know, like any court
- 41:43case, court documents come out and then you start hearing
- 41:46little bits of this side and that side and I'm like, I'm
- 41:50coming. Last week I was kind of laughing
- 41:51about it because I'm like, it's nice to have a NASCAR legal
- 41:54drama that doesn't feel like the whole sport's hanging in the
- 41:56balance. I still feel that way, but I was
- 41:59kind of reading that. I'm like, man, I don't, I don't
- 42:01know how much there is to gain by this thing going on for
- 42:07anybody because I, I don't, it's kind of like the more stuff I'm
- 42:11reading and the more stuff that's coming out, I'm like,
- 42:14man, y'all need to just get in a room and, and maybe hash this
- 42:17thing out and agree to just, I mean, it's a divorce.
- 42:19Divorces are messy. That's the way it goes sometime.
- 42:22But I'm reading all this stuff and I'm like, this is going to
- 42:25end up bringing everybody involved down.
- 42:27That's my very non legal and very just reading posts on
- 42:30Twitter and reading the few documents that have come out
- 42:33about it. But I for all their sake, I kind
- 42:37of hope they can just come to an agreement on it or, or whatever
- 42:40soon and move along because I the longer it goes on, I just
- 42:43don't think it's one of those deals where somebody might win
- 42:46in the court, but I don't know that there's going to be any
- 42:48winners. Well, yeah, I agree with you,
- 42:50Ricky, but when, you know, when they serve suit, when they serve
- 42:53suit against Gate Park, you know, it's pretty inflammatory,
- 42:56right? We all read that.
- 42:57We're like, man, it's got unscrewed up.
- 43:00Then his counter deal. You read that and you're like,
- 43:03huh, now, who the hell do we believe here?
- 43:06Because they're both saying the exact same thing about the other
- 43:09one. They well, sort of they're
- 43:11they're they're completely 180° apart about what they're saying.
- 43:15What went on. So you know, what side do you
- 43:18believe? Who do you believe?
- 43:19And then so that, you know, I understand why he had to do
- 43:22that, right? Because what they the first
- 43:25thing that came out about is very, very bad for him, right,
- 43:27terribly bad for him. And then so I understand why he
- 43:30had to fight back and what he said was completely, completely
- 43:34opposite from, you know, what those guys said.
- 43:37So then as that went on and they said they met in the courtroom
- 43:41last week and it was he, he and coach and who was the other one
- 43:46with them with the team. And they said that overheard
- 43:49them saying, man, we need to try to get this thing settled.
- 43:53And they and they do. I mean, you know, if you you
- 43:56know, this has gone on forever within our sport, you got a crew
- 43:58chief for whoever that knows some stuff with somebody else
- 44:01going to try to hire him. You know, this all the hell that
- 44:03went on by during my time and went on before my time, you know
- 44:07the deal. I got him on his intellectual
- 44:09properties and doing it all through computer and all all
- 44:12that stuff that they don't have what he's got in his mind.
- 44:14You know, they can't keep that from him.
- 44:16You know, you can't keep that from a team.
- 44:18But you know, yeah, I'm like you, Ricky.
- 44:21They need to stop. They need to just settle this
- 44:23thing, get it over with me done with it and get on down the road
- 44:26I don't need. This yeah, because you start
- 44:29with all the stuffs coming out about when gay parts side came
- 44:31out and you're reading the stuff about what he says, what goes
- 44:34on, particularly when it pertains to the 54 car.
- 44:37And just like, yeah, guys, this is just whether whatever is
- 44:41true, whatever isn't true, everybody just needs to just get
- 44:44together, hash it out, move on. So that's it.
- 44:48Phoenix. So Phoenix was a place you
- 44:51enjoyed, right? You like going out to Phoenix.
- 44:53Of course it was configured slightly differently, but that's
- 44:57you know, that's one place when you were racing.
- 45:01I never. It's one of the few places I
- 45:03never went to. And I remember you saying,
- 45:06though, as far as places to go, I think it was one of your
- 45:08favorite places to go, wasn't it?
- 45:10Yeah. It was, I mean the, the
- 45:12amenities around there in, in those days, especially early
- 45:14days, we before the motorhomes. But yeah, everybody stayed in
- 45:17the motels, right? And you had to eat while you
- 45:19were there, right. So that was one of the places
- 45:23that everybody enjoyed going because man, they had some bad
- 45:26ass good cooking there, good food, right?
- 45:29You go up on that mountain and police people come up on the
- 45:31horses riding and had the big fire pits outside cooking these
- 45:35great big team of mistakes. They had big old trays of beans,
- 45:39you know, I forget the name of that place, but people come
- 45:41riding up on the horses and doing that crap.
- 45:43And just anywhere you go to that in that whole area, Phoenix,
- 45:48gosh, Goodyear, Scottsdale, Tempe, that's all like one big
- 45:52city and it's just a cool. It was in the vibe there was
- 45:55cool. You know, you could get around
- 45:57all the all the roads in that thing were parallel or they're
- 46:00all did this. It wasn't any of this crazy
- 46:03stuff. Everything was on the road.
- 46:04You can never get lost. You knew where he was at.
- 46:06I don't know. It's just a that no deal is just
- 46:09a good vibe, right. And then the racetrack itself, I
- 46:13love the racetrack, just absolutely loved, loved that
- 46:16racetrack. I love racing on that racetrack,
- 46:19you know, and you know, and they they always drove a good crowd,
- 46:23always drew a good crowd there and they still do today, right.
- 46:26And so it'll be interesting to see this week, you know, if we
- 46:32have dominance by Blaney again in the Penske's at that
- 46:36racetrack or, you know, what the 45 could do.
- 46:40Could he do four in a row? Who knows man, We'll see.
- 46:44Yeah, I, I've never went to the racetrack out there.
- 46:47I've been in Phoenix once, and that was when I was out there
- 46:49with Major League Baseball back in 2012 for a couple days and in
- 46:54the fan cave deal for tryouts. And the couple days I was there,
- 46:57I had the same kind of reaction and feeling you did.
- 47:00I love the vibe. It was one of the cleanest,
- 47:02nicest cities I've ever been in. The spring training facility we
- 47:06went to was, of course, it's been almost 15 years, but it was
- 47:09state-of-the-art best in baseball at the time.
- 47:12So love it out there. And like you said, it's it's
- 47:16they always, always draw a good crowd and they've got some great
- 47:18storylines going into the race there this weekend where we can
- 47:22follow so. Bill always had before the
- 47:25reconfigured it, we'd always you'd, you'd come in the
- 47:28racetrack on the backstretch, which is now the front stretch.
- 47:30But you had a crossover gate there in that trial ordeal and
- 47:34you had to park most you had to park.
- 47:38They're trying to get out of the the worst part about that race
- 47:40there was trying to get out of there when the race was over.
- 47:43It was bad, bad, bad deal getting out of there and somehow
- 47:47or another my old buddy awesome Bill hell hit right there at
- 47:51that gate where you come across. There was somebody right there
- 47:53at that gate that owned that gate area or he who's a worker,
- 47:57right? Part of the track personnel had
- 47:59a little area, right spot right there.
- 48:01And Bill, he would let Bill park his car right there, right?
- 48:04So Bill always had a frigging advantage on everybody getting
- 48:08out of there and getting away from before all the traffic
- 48:10happened. And I forget how that deal work,
- 48:15but ended up Bill ended up letting me ride with it, right.
- 48:19And so the race was over. We could get out of there pretty
- 48:23quick. We did that two or three times
- 48:25and then the motorhome thing started.
- 48:27I don't know that that happened two or three times, but I never
- 48:30forget how how also Bill got that one little spot.
- 48:33But he did. And you know, the guy, let him
- 48:36have it, and everybody else wanted it, but no, Bill had it.
- 48:39So I don't know. Just a little antidote about
- 48:42Phoenix. I feel like as as time goes on,
- 48:44on mass cast the race after the race, we're just going, we're
- 48:47going to get little tidbits of information because we we talked
- 48:51about it with Earnhardt and Martinsville and just the race
- 48:54after the race in general. And I can remember like bribing,
- 48:59like the bribes that would would happen to various personnel to
- 49:02get the best spot at the airport or to get the best spot like you
- 49:06just laid out there. Bill had the best spot at
- 49:08Phoenix. So that's those little fun
- 49:10things that are. That's why I'd call it the race
- 49:11after the race because it was its own, it's kind of its own
- 49:14form of competition. That was it was always kind.
- 49:17Of fun. Each each, each track had its
- 49:18own deal, man, you know what I mean?
- 49:20That's what we need. We'll make that segment this
- 49:23year, Ricky on after the race. We'll make a segment the race
- 49:26after the race segment from that race we just had.
- 49:28Now we can't talk about Coda because Coda wasn't there when I
- 49:32was racing. I don't have a clue.
- 49:34I don't have a clue how you get in now that place, right?
- 49:36And but I will say this, through all those years of doing all
- 49:39that crap, the best thing that ever happened, we started using
- 49:41helicopters, right? That's when the place got that's
- 49:44when the trucks were so busy. I mean, you couldn't even move
- 49:47or breathe, right. So a lot of the places we end up
- 49:49helicopter, but we'll do that each week.
- 49:51We'll start next week after the Phoenix race and we'll talk
- 49:54about the race after the race and some of the some of the
- 49:57experiences that went on at these deals.
- 50:00Man, it's wonder was just wonder.
- 50:01Everybody didn't get killed or maimed or hurt, but we did we.
- 50:04Survived it. So I, I just wrote that down in
- 50:08our notes for next week and beyond.
- 50:11And as you said that, well, as you said it, we're, we're lucky
- 50:14nobody ever got maimed or killed.
- 50:15I'm like, Oh yeah, that makes me think of that time at Richmond.
- 50:18I'll save that story for Richmond.
- 50:20And then so that'll be later in the year.
- 50:22But that's that's when I remember, well, I shouldn't say
- 50:26finally, but it's like, thankfully we can.
- 50:29I can laugh. We can all laugh about it, but
- 50:31it could. You have to remind me after
- 50:33Richmond because I don't remember.
- 50:34It oh, I'll, I'll tell that story.
- 50:36I remember it. All right, all right.
- 50:39We'll be waiting. We'll be waiting on that one.
- 50:41Well, anything else you want to tell the people before we before
- 50:44we wrap it up for this week of Mass Cast I?
- 50:46Guess, I guess that pretty much covers everything.
- 50:49You know, I mean, we heck, the start the year, the stuff that I
- 50:55I said first on the mass cash I want to see happening.
- 50:57And that's with all the big MO that NASCAR has coming out of
- 51:01the winter, everything that went on and the things they're doing
- 51:03and trying to do. And you know, I said my whole
- 51:05deal this year was just going to my my biggest interest this year
- 51:08was going to be watching what goes on.
- 51:11You know, how they keep promoting, how they're trying to
- 51:12do the right things and see how how we propel this sport this
- 51:15year. And so far, man, we're on a
- 51:17roll. So hopefully we'll keep it
- 51:19going. Honestly, after we left from the
- 51:22second, the second Ryan Priest took the the checkered flag at
- 51:25Bowman Gray and we got through the Mother Nature experience at
- 51:29Bowman Gray. Everything since then, it's all
- 51:31been, I think it's all been good.
- 51:32It's all been really good. So I, I agree with you.
- 51:35I'm I'm as amped up to watch this weekend as I have been in a
- 51:40while. It's just, I really, really,
- 51:42it's nice every Sunday for me, just as a fan, I really look
- 51:46forward to just watching the race and just seeing, seeing
- 51:49what's going to happen. You know, I'm not, I don't feel
- 51:52obligated to watch because I do a podcast with you about it or
- 51:56for any other reason other than I'll wake up Sunday and I'm
- 51:58like, Oh yeah, can't wait to watch the race day.
- 52:01And my wife says, what time is the race today?
- 52:03And also we set our fantasy lineups, you know, and our.
- 52:05And our you know, You know who else wakes up thinking that,
- 52:08Ricky? Not Michael.
- 52:10Jordan that's. Yeah, that's right.
- 52:15Well, it's taken me, it's taken me 42 years, but finally Michael
- 52:21Jordan and I have something in common.
- 52:23That's great. That's.
- 52:25It. Now you're exactly right.
- 52:27All right, well, he's Rick. I'm Ricky follow us.
- 52:29He's at Rick Mast 22 on X Instagram.
