- 0:59Speaker 1: since More NFL international games. The NFL played its first
- 1:05Speaker 1: regular season game in Ireland this weekend, as the Vikings
- 1:08Speaker 1: and Steelers squared off in Dublin. The league is playing
- 1:11Speaker 1: seven international games this year, but At a panel discussion
- 1:15Speaker 1: in Ireland over the weekend, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said
- 1:19Speaker 1: that the league eventually wants to increase that to sixteen
- 1:23Speaker 1: per year so that every team plays one. I'm here
- 1:27Speaker 1: for it. The bengals two trips to London were among
- 1:31Speaker 1: my favorite experiences as the team's radio voice, and I
- 1:34Speaker 1: look forward to Cincinnati's next international game, which seems certain
- 1:39Speaker 1: to happen in the next two years. No need for
- 1:42Speaker 1: a bunch of radio replays this week, just a few
- 1:44Speaker 1: key plays. Denver led seven to three early in the
- 1:47Speaker 1: second quarter when the Bengals made what looked like a
- 1:50Speaker 1: huge play. Crowning stops his right foot, drops straight back,
- 1:54Speaker 1: the pocket closed as he flings it high and deep.
- 1:57Speaker 1: T Higgins high points the ball and catches it over
- 2:01Speaker 1: the beleaguered Riley Moss all the way down at the
- 2:05Speaker 1: Denver fourteen yard line. There's a penalty flag at the
- 2:10Speaker 1: line of scrimmage lasag A Marius Bimms penalized. Instead of
- 2:16Speaker 1: having the ball at the Denver fourteen, the penalty on
- 2:18Speaker 1: Mims moved it all the way back to the Cincinnati
- 2:21Speaker 1: forty four a forty two yard swing. It was the
- 2:24Speaker 1: most costly of eleven Bengals penalties. Denver took a fourteen
- 2:28Speaker 1: to three lead, and it looked like that would be
- 2:30Speaker 1: the halftime score when rookie Demetrius Knight got the first
- 2:34Speaker 1: takeaway of his career with roughly two minutes left in
- 2:37Speaker 1: the half. Nick's rolling right looking to throw the second
- 2:41Speaker 1: year QB fires and it is intercepted. You picked off
- 2:47Speaker 1: by Demetrius Knight in the corner of the end zone.
- 2:50Speaker 2: How about that played by the linebacker.
- 2:53Speaker 1: But Denver got the ball back with one oh nine
- 2:55Speaker 1: remaining and scored a backbreaking touchdown just before halftime. Nicks
- 3:00Speaker 1: back to throw. He's going to fire into the end
- 3:02Speaker 1: zone and it is caught for a touchdown eight seconds
- 3:07Speaker 1: left in the half, and a disastrous second quarter gets
- 3:11Speaker 1: worse for Cincinnati. The final score was twenty eight to
- 3:15Speaker 1: three Denver. After scoring on their opening drive, the Bengals
- 3:19Speaker 1: were shut out the rest of the way, finishing with
- 3:21Speaker 1: just one hundred and fifty nine yards of offense. Here
- 3:24Speaker 1: are a few of Jake Browning's comments to reporters in
- 3:27Speaker 1: a postgame news conference.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Very frustrating loss, and yeah, well you are a back
- 3:34Speaker 3: to work and figure out how we can be more
- 3:37Speaker 3: productive on offense and stop putting our defense in batspots.
- 3:41Speaker 3: As far as from returnover perspective, like, yeah, we played clean,
- 3:44Speaker 3: but we didn't move the ball, so who cares for me?
- 3:46Speaker 3: Like when you're struggling on offense and struggling to move
- 3:49Speaker 3: the ball, it's it's fighting that urge to you know,
- 3:53Speaker 3: have those frustration throws who're like trying to make something
- 3:56Speaker 3: happen and the next thing you know, it's an interception.
- 3:58Speaker 3: So you know, that's kind of that line you have
- 4:02Speaker 3: to tell. As far as I didn't feel like there
- 4:05Speaker 3: was anything down the field, just off of memory and
- 4:10Speaker 3: looking at the pictures on the sideline, I didn't feel
- 4:13Speaker 3: like there was anything down the field where I was like, ah,
- 4:14Speaker 3: I should have thrown that, but I was too afraid
- 4:16Speaker 3: of making a mistake, so I didn't, you know, I
- 4:19Speaker 3: think for the most part, I mean I hesitate to
- 4:21Speaker 3: say I put the ball where I was supposed to
- 4:22Speaker 3: go on each play because we didn't do anything on offense.
- 4:24Speaker 3: But for the most part that was kind of the case.
- 4:29Speaker 3: I didn't think effort was an issue. I think just
- 4:34Speaker 3: the last two weeks just feels like I've never really
- 4:37Speaker 3: had momentum, haven't really been explosive, haven't well, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 3: one or two good plays, and then we'll get into
- 4:46Speaker 3: a first and twenty and that's just you're fighting a
- 4:52Speaker 3: hard battle with one arm behind your back when you
- 4:54Speaker 3: end up in longer situations second and long, first and
- 4:57Speaker 3: long leading to third and long, and you know it's
- 5:02Speaker 3: not good offenses don't do that, so we need to
- 5:06Speaker 3: clean it up. And yeah, I mean I don't have
- 5:11Speaker 3: I don't think effort was an issue. I never questioned
- 5:13Speaker 3: anybody's effort in the locker room. I don't really think
- 5:16Speaker 3: that's how everything goes for the Bengals. But you know,
- 5:21Speaker 3: I do think it's a time when you've had two
- 5:24Speaker 3: tough losses where you have performed wrong offense. So you
- 5:27Speaker 3: do have to look at the mir and say, okay,
- 5:28Speaker 3: what is my role in this? And you know, removing
- 5:32Speaker 3: all the emotion and outside noise and just saying looking
- 5:35Speaker 3: at the film and saying, okay, what is my role
- 5:37Speaker 3: in this? What do I need to do better? And
- 5:40Speaker 3: for me, that's like I said, because you're entire of
- 5:43Speaker 3: me hearing about it here you say it, but that's
- 5:45Speaker 3: going to be my focus this week.
- 5:47Speaker 1: So what's a change in the Bengals starting lineup is
- 5:50Speaker 1: rookie Jalen Rivers got his first started right guard. I
- 5:53Speaker 1: spoke to him after the game. Jalen, you made your
- 5:56Speaker 1: first NFL start tonight. When did you know that was
- 5:58Speaker 1: going to be the case today? So we made it
- 6:02Speaker 1: find the last today and you know, I was out there.
- 6:04Speaker 1: How'd you feel about, Hey, that opportunity and be how
- 6:08Speaker 1: you play.
- 6:09Speaker 4: You know, I feel great about the opportunity. You got
- 6:10Speaker 4: to make the most of it, and I feel like
- 6:12Speaker 4: I did decent from most where. Of course, you look
- 6:15Speaker 4: back at the film, it's some things to work on,
- 6:16Speaker 4: and of course we didn't come out with the outcome
- 6:17Speaker 4: we wanted. But it felt great to be out there
- 6:20Speaker 4: and you can learn from it and grow from it.
- 6:22Speaker 1: You started well offensively, drove down the field, kicked the
- 6:24Speaker 1: field goal on the opening drive. What did you think
- 6:26Speaker 1: was working then?
- 6:28Speaker 4: I mean, we just had everything was just we were
- 6:30Speaker 4: executing things really good that drive. We just got sustained
- 6:33Speaker 4: that for the rest of the game. What changed, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 4: things happened we you know, penalties weren't going you know,
- 6:40Speaker 4: stuff like that. Just not adjusting after the penalties, and
- 6:45Speaker 4: you know, things weren't going our way. We lost momentum
- 6:47Speaker 4: and things just went left for us.
- 6:49Speaker 1: How demoralizing were some of those penalties, particularly the Big
- 6:52Speaker 1: Game to Tea, where you would have been at the
- 6:53Speaker 1: fourteen yard line.
- 6:54Speaker 4: You know, things happened in football. You got to learn
- 6:57Speaker 4: from it and move forward. You know, we didn't play
- 6:59Speaker 4: our best game, but things happen, penalties, You got to
- 7:01Speaker 4: learn how to bounce back from it.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Broncos have a great pass rushing front. How difficult is
- 7:06Speaker 1: it under these circumstances, loud, crowd, momentum in their favor,
- 7:11Speaker 1: et cetera.
- 7:12Speaker 4: I mean we knew that going in that you know
- 7:13Speaker 4: they have a you know, the mile high stadium that
- 7:16Speaker 4: is allowed. You're going against the E league rushing defense.
- 7:19Speaker 4: I mean we knew that going in. We just did
- 7:22Speaker 4: it come with the outcome we wanted.
- 7:24Speaker 1: How do you flash it?
- 7:25Speaker 4: Move on? You got to flich it now. I mean
- 7:27Speaker 4: we move forward to it's a short week. We move
- 7:29Speaker 4: forward to Detroit on Sunday, So when we fly back,
- 7:33Speaker 4: sleep on it, learn from it, watch the film. We're
- 7:35Speaker 4: gonna learn how to learn from it. Just really quick
- 7:38Speaker 4: because we're off tomorrow. Come back Wednesday, or whatever day Wednesday,
- 7:42Speaker 4: and we're starting on Detroit, So you got to get
- 7:44Speaker 4: that out of your MinC with appreciate your time. Thank you.
- 7:48Speaker 1: We'll get to know Jailing much better later in this
- 7:51Speaker 1: week's fun fact segment. The Broncos offense was excellent, finishing
- 7:55Speaker 1: with three hundred and twenty six passing yards and one
- 7:58Speaker 1: eighty six on the ground. That's five twelve in all.
- 8:02Speaker 1: One bright spot on the Bengals defense was Demitrius Knight,
- 8:05Speaker 1: who tied for the team lead in tackles with ten
- 8:08Speaker 1: and came away with the game's only takeaway to be true.
- 8:12Speaker 1: She had double digit tackles and an interception tonight. Let's
- 8:14Speaker 1: start with that interception. It's a huge play at the time.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Just describe it for us.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Yeah, first and foremost, I wouldn't have been in that
- 8:22Speaker 5: position when to make that catch and secure the catch
- 8:25Speaker 5: that I'm my lord and say for Jesus Christ, and
- 8:29Speaker 5: that's why I'm ultimately why I'm here.
- 8:30Speaker 4: We're all here. But what to play?
- 8:32Speaker 5: What a way to step up and you know, get it,
- 8:35Speaker 5: try to get this out of situation. Just to create momentum.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Uh.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Football is a game of momentum. When you have it
- 8:41Speaker 5: you have it, and when you don't, you don't. It's
- 8:43Speaker 5: kind of hard to generate it. But we gotta find
- 8:45Speaker 5: different ways generated offense. We gotta find ways to generate
- 8:47Speaker 5: on offense and defense. We've got to compliment it. We've
- 8:50Speaker 5: got to get it right back to them. So we
- 8:52Speaker 5: are in the process of iron out the kinks stu early.
- 8:56Speaker 5: We're not defeated yet. We're just going to the drawing board,
- 9:00Speaker 5: just as a lot of teams are doing across the
- 9:01Speaker 5: league right now. So everybody still find their identity. We
- 9:04Speaker 5: know what the identity is. We're just you know, in
- 9:08Speaker 5: a metaphor, we're still on the climb, still on that
- 9:10Speaker 5: journey to get there, to put down the roots of
- 9:13Speaker 5: what we want to be, who we're trying to be.
- 9:15Speaker 5: So people are itching to get back to where I
- 9:17Speaker 5: know I am.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You're in for almost every snap, Barrett played a bunch.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Do you feel like you two guys grow with every
- 9:23Speaker 1: NFL gaming play.
- 9:24Speaker 5: Absolutely, That's all this is is. Learn to be consistent,
- 9:28Speaker 5: learn to trust your brothers, your left and to your right,
- 9:31Speaker 5: knowing that you can get the play call, echo the
- 9:32Speaker 5: play call, and go out there and do your best,
- 9:35Speaker 5: do your one eleventh to make sure that we can
- 9:37Speaker 5: get off the field. And that's what we're gonna continue
- 9:39Speaker 5: to do as a defense, and we're gonna continue as
- 9:41Speaker 5: an offense to grow and put points out when the
- 9:44Speaker 5: time it's called.
- 9:45Speaker 1: How challenging are the Broncos to defend? Very good screen game,
- 9:49Speaker 1: good offensive line, punishing runners. Talk about that challenge.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Yeah, we step up for every challenge. You gotta step
- 9:55Speaker 5: up to every challenge in the NFL. All teams are.
- 9:58Speaker 5: They have their favorite play, and they have their momentum
- 10:02Speaker 5: plays and their their big momentum shifts, and teams find
- 10:05Speaker 5: what their bread and butter is for them, that's their
- 10:07Speaker 5: bread and butter.
- 10:07Speaker 4: And every week.
- 10:08Speaker 5: You gotta have a plan for We always have a plan.
- 10:11Speaker 5: We have an answer for everything. We just have to
- 10:13Speaker 5: know when to put the right answers in the and
- 10:17Speaker 5: to play if you will, and not overload our minds
- 10:19Speaker 5: and just make it simple so that everybody can play fast.
- 10:21Speaker 1: What's the touchdown with eight seconds left in the half?
- 10:24Speaker 1: A big blow because it was fourteen to three at
- 10:27Speaker 1: that point.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Right, Definitely a big blow, But it's you got to
- 10:32Speaker 5: kind of go back to your your little league quarterback
- 10:36Speaker 5: days or just Little League days in general, where you
- 10:38Speaker 5: know you hear a lot of coaches and even my
- 10:40Speaker 5: dad would say, you know, have short term memory. You
- 10:43Speaker 5: know when you come back out, what another you get
- 10:46Speaker 5: a next opportunity. There are no failures. There are just opportunities,
- 10:50Speaker 5: just missed opportunities. So there are no failures on the field.
- 10:53Speaker 5: We don't consider as an a fair We see it
- 10:55Speaker 5: as a missed opportunity. So and then you know, going
- 10:57Speaker 5: into the next half, what a next an opportunity? You
- 11:00Speaker 5: get to come out of the gate and get through
- 11:02Speaker 5: and out. So that's that's that's what you want to
- 11:05Speaker 5: stand on. So it's about learning from missed opportunities, never
- 11:09Speaker 5: learning from failures because we don't have failures because we
- 11:11Speaker 5: get to play the game that we love.
- 11:13Speaker 1: The offense had a good first drive, then struggle to
- 11:15Speaker 1: sustain things that had some costly penalties that meant the
- 11:18Speaker 1: defense was out there for a long stretch high altitude.
- 11:22Speaker 1: We did it start to wear on you guys?
- 11:26Speaker 4: I would say that it did.
- 11:27Speaker 5: It's of course, it's hard to to really train in
- 11:30Speaker 5: that type of situation in high altitude. You can hydrates
- 11:34Speaker 5: as much as you can, it's it's nothing until you
- 11:37Speaker 5: get in so but it's it's about, you know, learn
- 11:40Speaker 5: to breathe learn to calm yourself down, be in the
- 11:43Speaker 5: moment and not you know, run rapid in your mind.
- 11:46Speaker 5: Oh man, I can't catt some bred what's to play
- 11:48Speaker 5: call things like that. Just rely on your training at
- 11:50Speaker 5: practice when you know you have those tough Thursday practices
- 11:53Speaker 5: on purpose so that the games can be easier.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So you don't flitch one your only home game. You
- 11:57Speaker 1: got the second one coming up. It's a big challenge
- 12:00Speaker 1: against Detroit. As a defender, how much do you look
- 12:03Speaker 1: forward to trying to show Okay, it's one of the
- 12:06Speaker 1: best offenses in the league, but we can compete with
- 12:08Speaker 1: these guys.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Absolutely. That's that's the love of the NFL. You get
- 12:13Speaker 5: to go against the best of the best. I know,
- 12:15Speaker 5: my former team major mir Giz, I'll be looking forward to,
- 12:18Speaker 5: you know, putting them on the ground and talking talking
- 12:20Speaker 5: a little here and there, but definitely looking forward to
- 12:23Speaker 5: playing against the best of the best. He's one of
- 12:24Speaker 5: the best of the best. They're one of the best
- 12:26Speaker 5: of the best, Jared Goff and what they bring to
- 12:29Speaker 5: the table offensively with their you know, their firepower. I
- 12:32Speaker 5: believe we have the firepower to match that and cancel
- 12:35Speaker 5: it and go the you know, blow for blow. So
- 12:38Speaker 5: what an opportunity again to show showcase what we can
- 12:42Speaker 5: do on defense, to not just say who we want
- 12:45Speaker 5: to be, but to put it on tape who we
- 12:47Speaker 5: are and the same thing as.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Offense can grat tight your first peck. Appreciate the time, Yes,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Now let's hear from head coach Zach Taylor,
- 12:54Speaker 1: who spent a couple of minutes with Dave Lapham after
- 12:56Speaker 1: the game.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Once you come to the locker and you talk to
- 13:00Speaker 2: your guys, you find out the mindset that you guys have.
- 13:04Speaker 2: What do you say to them? Yeah, well, obviously they're disappointed,
- 13:07Speaker 2: as they should be. We score three points, so we
- 13:09Speaker 2: have the amount of penalties we had on offense that
- 13:11Speaker 2: you're gonna have a hard time winning against a.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Good team on the road. And so those are things
- 13:15Speaker 6: that are correctable. There's certainly things that we can improve upon,
- 13:19Speaker 6: and I know that we will. I thought our defense
- 13:22Speaker 6: showed us at moments in this game what we needed
- 13:24Speaker 6: against a really good football team. And so again we
- 13:28Speaker 6: just early in the season, we're two and two, like
- 13:31Speaker 6: a lot of teams in this league. How we're gonna
- 13:33Speaker 6: respond to it?
- 13:34Speaker 2: That's I guess the question, the big question. You mentioned
- 13:37Speaker 2: the defense, So I thought the defense did respond. I
- 13:39Speaker 2: thought that, you know, there was a lack of support,
- 13:44Speaker 2: I guess is the best way to put it in
- 13:46Speaker 2: terms of the offense holding onto the football, keeping the football,
- 13:49Speaker 2: scoring points, getting yards and all that sort of thing.
- 13:52Speaker 2: What do you tell your defense in the locker room
- 13:55Speaker 2: after a game like this.
- 13:56Speaker 6: Keep building on it, keep building on it, and eventually
- 13:58Speaker 6: the turnovers are going to come. The offense is going
- 14:01Speaker 6: to find its identity and create some momentum there to
- 14:04Speaker 6: take some of the pressure off some of those long
- 14:05Speaker 6: drives that they're having to deal with. So again, it's
- 14:08Speaker 6: four games in the season. I have a ton of conferences.
- 14:10Speaker 6: The football team. Again, it's just look around the league.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Who's going to respond to adversity early in the league.
- 14:15Speaker 6: And I feels good about our team as anybody else.
- 14:18Speaker 2: You've got quarterback jack Jake Browning that has responded to adversity.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I mean, his whole career has been built unresponding to adversity. Really,
- 14:29Speaker 2: he seems to be a guy that, no matter what
- 14:34Speaker 2: the stakes are, how many odds he has to face,
- 14:36Speaker 2: whatever the situation is, he picks himself up in response.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Do you expect that to happen again?
- 14:41Speaker 4: Absolutely?
- 14:42Speaker 6: I mean we walked into it as hard of an
- 14:44Speaker 6: environment as you're gonna face Monday night football on the
- 14:46Speaker 6: road in Denver with with one of the better fronts
- 14:51Speaker 6: in all the league, with the defensive player of the
- 14:53Speaker 6: year and the secondary. It's a tough unit to go against,
- 14:57Speaker 6: and you're gonna have to make some plays. You're gonna
- 14:59Speaker 6: have to find a way as a quarterback to make
- 15:01Speaker 6: some plays, or receivers have got to make some plays.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Our lines got to hold up and make some plays.
- 15:04Speaker 6: Our back's got to make somebody miss and make some plays.
- 15:06Speaker 6: So just as a unit, we've got to find a
- 15:08Speaker 6: way to be a little more explosive. And again, the
- 15:11Speaker 6: penalties really set us back. We had a lot of
- 15:13Speaker 6: unforced airs that we can't accept.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Remember playing against a defensive front like this when I
- 15:20Speaker 2: was a player, it might not have like just one
- 15:23Speaker 2: pass rusher. They got four. They get four guys that
- 15:26Speaker 2: can rush the pass or at a high level. So
- 15:28Speaker 2: it's not just one guy that you can slide double
- 15:30Speaker 2: triple team or whatever. Every one of these guys gets
- 15:33Speaker 2: in their rush lane, takes control of their rush lane.
- 15:37Speaker 2: That's even a tougher dynamic to handle, isn't it.
- 15:39Speaker 4: It's tough.
- 15:39Speaker 6: I mean it's an outstanding front. Again, we got to
- 15:42Speaker 6: do the little things to give ourselves an advantage. We just
- 15:45Speaker 6: didn't do enough.
- 15:45Speaker 4: That's night.
- 15:46Speaker 2: What about some of your players that you count on
- 15:49Speaker 2: to give you big performances every week? How did how
- 15:52Speaker 2: did they play? How did Jamar play for you? How
- 15:55Speaker 2: did how did he play for you?
- 15:56Speaker 6: He's competing, you know, and it's we got to continue
- 15:59Speaker 6: to find a way strust we do the whole week.
- 16:02Speaker 6: We're trying to find ways to get these guys the ball.
- 16:04Speaker 6: The other team knows that they're trying to find ways
- 16:06Speaker 6: to take the ball away from them. So again, it's
- 16:08Speaker 6: something we look at every single week. Some defenses make
- 16:10Speaker 6: it difficult for you and you got to be patient
- 16:12Speaker 6: with it and let those oppertunities come to you. And unfortunately,
- 16:16Speaker 6: we just weren't able to do a lot of great
- 16:17Speaker 6: things on the field today.
- 16:18Speaker 2: You think this defense had a pretty good handle on
- 16:21Speaker 2: what you were trying to do and how you were
- 16:22Speaker 2: trying to do it. By formation, by personnel, by motion
- 16:25Speaker 2: and all that sort of thing. Do you think that
- 16:27Speaker 2: they had a pretty good handle on what was happening.
- 16:29Speaker 6: I think they've had a pretty good handle on every
- 16:30Speaker 6: team they played against because they got great talent, they
- 16:32Speaker 6: got a veteran de coordinator. At home, they get a
- 16:34Speaker 6: chance to use their crowd and t off on the cadence.
- 16:37Speaker 6: So again, we just got to do better job as
- 16:38Speaker 6: a unit.
- 16:39Speaker 1: So here's how things look in the AFC Nord. The
- 16:42Speaker 1: Steelers are in first at three and one, a game
- 16:45Speaker 1: ahead of the Bengals. Pittsburgh has a bye this week
- 16:47Speaker 1: after beating the Vikings in London. The Ravens are one
- 16:51Speaker 1: and three and have allowed thirty five or more points
- 16:53Speaker 1: in all three losses. Injuries are mounting as well as
- 16:57Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, Ronnie Stanley, rope On Smith, and Marlon Humphreys
- 17:02Speaker 1: are among the players dealing with various aches and pains.
- 17:06Speaker 1: The Ravens host Houston this week. Cleveland has also won
- 17:10Speaker 1: in three and the Browns have not topped seventeen points
- 17:13Speaker 1: in any of their games this year. They're in London
- 17:16Speaker 1: this week to face the Vikings, who stayed there after
- 17:19Speaker 1: losing to Pittsburgh. The Bengals Booth podcast is brought to
- 17:23Speaker 1: you by pay Corps, Proud to be the Bengals Official

- 17:41Speaker 1: Now time for the radio guy's recap. Tough night for
- 17:46Speaker 1: the Bengals Lap. Let's start with the offense. They've got
- 17:49Speaker 1: to find a way to get something going two years
- 17:52Speaker 1: ago when Joe missed the last seven games, By and large,
- 17:54Speaker 1: they did, and they didn't score as many points as
- 17:56Speaker 1: they did with Joe, but they scored enough to win.
- 17:58Speaker 1: They just have not functioned well the last two weeks
- 18:01Speaker 1: on the offensive side of the ball.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Yeah, they really haven't. I think the biggest thing that
- 18:05Speaker 2: they've got to do is find a way to run
- 18:08Speaker 2: the football. I mean, as a former alignment, I'd I'd
- 18:13Speaker 2: be embarrassed. I'd be embarrassed myself, my teammates, for everybody involved,
- 18:18Speaker 2: the coaches, it's you know, it's going to be you know,
- 18:22Speaker 2: all hands on deck with respect to it. Uh, everybody's
- 18:27Speaker 2: got to, you know, realize that it's not good enough.
- 18:30Speaker 2: We got to do something about it, and we gotta
- 18:31Speaker 2: we have the worm has to turn quickly, and the
- 18:34Speaker 2: only way to do it is to get back to
- 18:36Speaker 2: work and you know, putting the time at practice, you know,
- 18:40Speaker 2: maybe think of different ways that they might be able
- 18:44Speaker 2: to gain plan and uh, formation people and with personnel
- 18:49Speaker 2: groupings and motion and uh, you know, I don't know.
- 18:54Speaker 2: It's a it's a it's so bad. It really is
- 18:58Speaker 2: about as bad as I've seen in a long time
- 19:01Speaker 2: because of the talent level. If they had nobody, if
- 19:04Speaker 2: they didn't have any players, would be like, hey, you know,
- 19:07Speaker 2: this is expected. This is shocking how bad it is
- 19:11Speaker 2: with the players and coaches and everybody that they've got
- 19:15Speaker 2: that they can't go out and perform at a higher
- 19:16Speaker 2: level than they are.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Jalen Rivers moved into the starting lineup at right guard tonight.
- 19:20Speaker 1: So they've got a rookie starting at left guard and
- 19:23Speaker 1: a rookie starting at right guard. What issues does that create?
- 19:26Speaker 1: And are you in favor of it in the sense
- 19:29Speaker 1: that these are talented guys, Let's get them the experience
- 19:32Speaker 1: so that we've got something down the road.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Well, it does create a lot of issues, but they
- 19:36Speaker 2: don't have any choice. I mean, they don't really have
- 19:39Speaker 2: anybody else because guys are nicked up. Guys that have
- 19:42Speaker 2: some play of time, some NFL starts in playing time
- 19:48Speaker 2: are on the bench with injury. But they haven't really
- 19:51Speaker 2: worked together all that much anyway. So it's not like
- 19:54Speaker 2: you're taking a cohesive offensive line and blowing it up
- 19:57Speaker 2: and saying, you know, this guy's short of that guy.
- 20:00Speaker 2: It's they're injured, but they've never been a unit that was,
- 20:06Speaker 2: you know, one of the top in the league in
- 20:08Speaker 2: terms of going out and executing and performing because they've
- 20:11Speaker 2: been around together for such a long period of time.
- 20:13Speaker 2: So you know, I think if they don't have a
- 20:17Speaker 2: choice but to put Jalen Rivers in there. And it's
- 20:20Speaker 2: in my mind it's not like he doesn't belong. I
- 20:22Speaker 2: think he belongs in the National FOOTB League. I think
- 20:24Speaker 2: he's a good player. I think he's got a very
- 20:26Speaker 2: bright future. I think that these snaps that he's getting
- 20:29Speaker 2: right now are going to be invaluable to him as
- 20:32Speaker 2: he grows and matures as an offensive lineman in this league.
- 20:35Speaker 4: I really do.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I think he's going to be a really good one.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Five catches for Jamar Chase in the game. They didn't
- 20:40Speaker 1: go for a ton of yards. Have we reached the
- 20:43Speaker 1: point where you have to line him up in the
- 20:45Speaker 1: backfield a couple of times. You've got to do some
- 20:48Speaker 1: reverses and jet sweeps, whatever it takes to try to
- 20:52Speaker 1: see if you can get him the ball to make
- 20:54Speaker 1: a big play.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:55Speaker 2: I mean, I like the way you think, and you know,
- 20:56Speaker 2: get the ball in his hands, get him involved. I mean,
- 21:00Speaker 2: he's got to be unbelievably frustrated that this guy is
- 21:04Speaker 2: one of the greatest players in the National Football League,
- 21:07Speaker 2: you know, just a tremendous football player, one of the
- 21:09Speaker 2: best wide receivers. Is not the best that the beanngs
- 21:12Speaker 2: have ever had. I mean they do. They have to
- 21:15Speaker 2: figure out ways. If it's in the backfield, you know,
- 21:18Speaker 2: getting them some carriers, tossing the football to him, or whatever,
- 21:23Speaker 2: jet sweeps or you know, whatever the case may be. Screens,
- 21:26Speaker 2: receiver screens, middle screens, outside screens. Find ways to give
- 21:30Speaker 2: him the football. I mean, he's too good of a player,
- 21:32Speaker 2: he's too much of a threat. I mean, he is
- 21:35Speaker 2: the ultimate weapon. Every team in the NFL every single
- 21:39Speaker 2: year is looking for Jamar Chase in the draft or
- 21:42Speaker 2: in free agency, and we got them. We got one.
- 21:45Speaker 2: He's under contract, so we got to figure out a
- 21:47Speaker 2: way to use this dude and don't waste them.
- 21:50Speaker 1: This is a phenomenal locker room with a lot of leaders,
- 21:54Speaker 1: but the human beings, and when you take back to
- 21:56Speaker 1: back lopsided losses, it's hard not to splinter a little bit.
- 22:01Speaker 4: How do you avoid that?
- 22:02Speaker 1: If you're Zach Taylor and you're the captains on this team.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's natural to start questioning everything. You question yourself,
- 22:10Speaker 2: you question your teammates, You question the head coach. I mean,
- 22:12Speaker 2: what's going on? How can we not perform better than this?
- 22:15Speaker 2: What is what's what's happening? You start to question the coordinators,
- 22:20Speaker 2: You start to question position coach, You question everybody. You
- 22:23Speaker 2: question what you're eating. Your question how you're working out,
- 22:26Speaker 2: You question what your wife doing. You know, I mean
- 22:29Speaker 2: everything there is the question in your life. You're questioning
- 22:31Speaker 2: it because you know your life's so unsettled, because this
- 22:34Speaker 2: is what you're all about. This is your job, this
- 22:37Speaker 2: is the National Football League, grown men playing a kids game,
- 22:41Speaker 2: and you're getting paid handsomely to do it. I mean,
- 22:44Speaker 2: everybody in the world would want to have your job,
- 22:46Speaker 2: So you know, you're not going to spit the bid
- 22:49Speaker 2: on it. You're not going to give it up. But
- 22:51Speaker 2: things have to change, and they have to change quickly.
- 22:53Speaker 2: I mean, there are only four games into the season.
- 22:57Speaker 2: They're two and two. As you said, you know, I mean,
- 22:58Speaker 2: they're they're right, they're in the hunt. They just can't
- 23:03Speaker 2: they can't let the hunt get too far away from them,
- 23:05Speaker 2: whether they can't catch up to everybody that's in the hunt.
- 23:08Speaker 1: They didn't turn it over tonight, that's a positive. But
- 23:10Speaker 1: the penalties were killers double digit penalties in the game,
- 23:13Speaker 1: including four in a two minute span in the second
- 23:16Speaker 1: quarter when it looked like they were going to have
- 23:18Speaker 1: the ball at the fourteen yard line. I thought that
- 23:20Speaker 1: really swung the momentum in this game.
- 23:23Speaker 2: All kinds of penalties to all different types of procedural penalties,
- 23:26Speaker 2: you know, sloppy hands penalties, whether it's holding offense or
- 23:31Speaker 2: defensive holding, whether it's interference, pass interference, getting a little
- 23:34Speaker 2: bit too handsy, too grab you out there. I mean,
- 23:38Speaker 2: you know, when you're struggling and you've only got three
- 23:41Speaker 2: points on the board and less than two hundred yards
- 23:43Speaker 2: and you have a big plane that comes back because
- 23:45Speaker 2: what you did, not what the defense did to take
- 23:48Speaker 2: it away from which you did to take it away
- 23:49Speaker 2: from yourself. There's no worse feeling in the world than
- 23:53Speaker 2: that when you're I mean, it's like, you know, you
- 23:55Speaker 2: haven't eaten for a week, and all of a sudden,
- 23:57Speaker 2: there's you know, a scrap of food comes your way
- 23:59Speaker 2: and you know you're almost ready to bite it, and
- 24:01Speaker 2: it's gone. You know, it's taken away from you. It's
- 24:04Speaker 2: just it's a it's a sick feeling, that's for sure.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And these guys, uh, right now. You know I've been
- 24:10Speaker 2: there walking around this locker room looking at these guys faces.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I know, I know. I know what
- 24:15Speaker 2: you feel, and I know what you I know what
- 24:16Speaker 2: you think, and I know what you feel like. I've
- 24:18Speaker 2: been there. The only thing that is going nobody's going
- 24:21Speaker 2: to feel sorry for you, and they shouldn't. Nobody should
- 24:23Speaker 2: feel sorry for you. Everybody's got their own problems. What
- 24:26Speaker 2: you're going to do is go back to work, grind
- 24:29Speaker 2: it out. That's what got you here. You know you're
- 24:32Speaker 2: good enough to be here. Don't question everything, go out
- 24:35Speaker 2: and play.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I am still very confident that Al Golden is an
- 24:41Speaker 1: excellent defensive coordinator and he's going to do a really
- 24:43Speaker 1: good job in Cincinnati. But maybe I was naive to
- 24:46Speaker 1: think it would happen overnight. It's a work in progress.
- 24:48Speaker 1: They've got a lot of young guys, and boy, they
- 24:53Speaker 1: have to try to make some major strides in a
- 24:55Speaker 1: short period of time with the high scoring Lions coming
- 24:58Speaker 1: to town next week.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 25:00Speaker 4: You know.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Everybody's good. I mean it's the NFL. There's no schmucks
- 25:05Speaker 2: in there, man, I mean it's everybody. Everybody's got a quarterback.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Everybody's good. Everybody's got players everywhere, the skill player. Everybody's
- 25:12Speaker 2: got lineman. Again, I still think the biggest problem the
- 25:16Speaker 2: area for the Bengals is offensive defensive line. They have
- 25:19Speaker 2: to get that rectified, whether it be you know, trade,
- 25:23Speaker 2: whether it be free agency, you know, at the end
- 25:26Speaker 2: of this year at some point or next year, or
- 25:29Speaker 2: in the draft or in college free agency. They got
- 25:31Speaker 2: to get more people in here that can play football
- 25:35Speaker 2: at a high level competing.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean every way that you have at your
- 25:40Speaker 1: disposal to continue to improve those two units that's got
- 25:44Speaker 1: to be the priority O line and D line. Now,
- 25:46Speaker 1: it'll help when Jamar Stewart comes back. He looked really
- 25:49Speaker 1: good in the games that he played, but you're going
- 25:52Speaker 1: to have to continue to pour resources into trying to
- 25:55Speaker 1: improve those two units.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Absolutely, And you know, think about how they got some
- 25:59Speaker 2: of the guys they got that are playing at a
- 26:01Speaker 2: good level.
- 26:01Speaker 4: For him, you know.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Brown, you know, he he he was a free agent,
- 26:08Speaker 2: veteran free agent, Cares, veteran free agent.
- 26:11Speaker 4: You know.
- 26:11Speaker 2: They and then the lineman, and you got some rookie
- 26:15Speaker 2: guys and they're at the guard position in the draft
- 26:18Speaker 2: and they're trying to learn from these veteran guys. Veteran
- 26:21Speaker 2: guys are trying to help the younger players. I mean,
- 26:24Speaker 2: right now, it's a it's a mess. I mean, everybody is,
- 26:27Speaker 2: everybody's looking for answers and and nobody's got you know,
- 26:31Speaker 2: clear cut answers. And when you're when you're kind of
- 26:34Speaker 2: whistling and dark like that, it's a bad place to be.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Well, I'm sorry, Game number one thousand wasn't a great
- 26:40Speaker 1: Bengals victory, but hopefully Game number one thousand and one
- 26:43Speaker 1: will be.
- 26:44Speaker 2: I'm all for that, Dan, I mean appreciate. The kind
- 26:47Speaker 2: words that you had for me means a lot. You're
- 26:51Speaker 2: a great friend, a great broadcaster. You understand the game
- 26:54Speaker 2: of football. Anything you say about football, you know is
- 26:59Speaker 2: is meaningful and it means a lot to me, that's
- 27:01Speaker 2: for sure. So appreciate you and hopefully the Bengals appreciate
- 27:07Speaker 2: each other a little bit more, you know, and go
- 27:09Speaker 2: out and try to win some football games for each other.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Up next a home game against the high scoring Detroit Lions.
- 27:16Speaker 1: That's a four to twenty five kick next Sunday at
- 27:19Speaker 1: pay Course Stadium. Now time for this week's fun fact
- 27:23Speaker 1: segment as we get to know a fifth round pick
- 27:25Speaker 1: in this year's draft out of the University of Miami.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Time for some fun facts with rookie offensive linemen Jalen
- 27:34Speaker 1: Rivers from Jacksonville, Florida. Jalen, we learned on Draft Day
- 27:38Speaker 1: that your mother, father, and stepfather all served in the
- 27:41Speaker 1: Navy for more than thirty years. How did their military
- 27:44Speaker 1: background shape your upbringing?
- 27:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm an upbringing as anybody would guess, you know,
- 27:50Speaker 4: come from a millerity background, strict household. Everything you learn
- 27:53Speaker 4: in discipline at a very young age since I came
- 27:55Speaker 4: off the womb. But also other than discipline, just hard
- 27:58Speaker 4: work and you know, is dedicated in your all into
- 28:01Speaker 4: something you want. So your goal, you have to reach it.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Nothing to be given to you, obviously, but literally them
- 28:07Speaker 4: picking me up late at night from the YMCA school,
- 28:09Speaker 4: coming from work, and then them making sure I go
- 28:13Speaker 4: to practice, do all the sports. I was a year
- 28:15Speaker 4: long athlete, basketball, football, track and field, whatever it was.
- 28:19Speaker 4: Take me to sports, making sure I do my homework, showering,
- 28:21Speaker 4: and just repeating that cycle every single day while one
- 28:24Speaker 4: parent was in deployment and deployment for like nine months.
- 28:28Speaker 4: You grow up quick because you got to be like,
- 28:29Speaker 4: you got to make sure everything's you know, straight, because yeah,
- 28:32Speaker 4: I had siblings in the house wild, but you got
- 28:33Speaker 4: to do things yourself growing up, and you got to
- 28:35Speaker 4: learn like, this is what it takes to get what
- 28:37Speaker 4: you want. So all that combined, you know, strict house
- 28:41Speaker 4: will make you bad. Do this. It's very militant, but
- 28:44Speaker 4: I wouldn't trade it for the world.
- 28:45Speaker 1: He told me once, you were not allowed to go
- 28:47Speaker 1: out on school nights.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Don't know, I was never you could ask them and
- 28:50Speaker 4: if I did shoot, I don't even know when I did.
- 28:54Speaker 4: But if it was to go to the movies, be
- 28:55Speaker 4: back at a certain time, if I did all my
- 28:57Speaker 4: homework and they trusted me, everything was done, maybe that
- 29:00Speaker 4: was rare. Though.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Is the Army Navy game a huge thing in your household?
- 29:05Speaker 4: Actually it's not. But because we grew up very we
- 29:11Speaker 4: watched a lot of college football, like Miami. My stepdad
- 29:14Speaker 4: was a big Miami fan, so we grew up watching
- 29:16Speaker 4: a lot of Miami Florida, Miami, Florida State, a lot
- 29:18Speaker 4: of them games. But at the same time, when Army
- 29:20Speaker 4: and Navy was playing, my stepdad my mom were kind
- 29:25Speaker 4: of following it, but it wasn't a big thing. Like
- 29:26Speaker 4: if they were playing, we're watching it.
- 29:28Speaker 1: We're visiting the Jalen Rivers. You're six sex with a
- 29:31Speaker 1: seven foot wingspan. Did you always tower over the other
- 29:35Speaker 1: kids when you were growing up?
- 29:37Speaker 4: Oh, definitely, up until I want to say, the first
- 29:42Speaker 4: time I saw somebody told to me or like, you know,
- 29:45Speaker 4: same height as me, maybe sixth grade maybe, and that
- 29:49Speaker 4: was my friends, my god brother, Like that's when I'm like, okay,
- 29:53Speaker 4: I was a year younger than them, actually, but we
- 29:55Speaker 4: were the same height. So we played ball together, basketball, football,
- 29:57Speaker 4: au and all that stuff. So that's the first time
- 29:59Speaker 4: I I saw a lot of people my height are
- 30:01Speaker 4: maybe taller than me. But at the same time, when
- 30:04Speaker 4: I went to school and we were at school, we
- 30:05Speaker 4: were the main ones. It was a handful of us,
- 30:07Speaker 4: but we were tall, and everybody everybody was looking up
- 30:10Speaker 4: those Oh you're so tall. Yeah, so I got that
- 30:12Speaker 4: when I was young.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Did you like that or did it make your self conscious?
- 30:17Speaker 4: It never really made me self conscious. I mean it
- 30:20Speaker 4: didn't bother me at all. Actually, it's just got tiring
- 30:23Speaker 4: because everybody, even families, you know, parents' kids. It was
- 30:27Speaker 4: my whole life, how tall are you? Oh you're so tall?
- 30:29Speaker 4: How is it? How's the weather up there? That type
- 30:31Speaker 4: of joke. But I mean getting it. It's just like I
- 30:33Speaker 4: know I was tall when I started understanding that I
- 30:35Speaker 4: was tall, and people keep asking me, people keep staring.
- 30:38Speaker 4: So out in public, people stare or talk to you.
- 30:40Speaker 4: Now if you're wearing back in the when all that
- 30:42Speaker 4: Miami Miami stuff now Bengal stuff. They know I'm a
- 30:44Speaker 4: full player, and they even if I wasn't, if I'm
- 30:46Speaker 4: bigger than everybody, They're just asking and talking and staring,
- 30:49Speaker 4: so I'm used to it now.
- 30:51Speaker 1: And youth football, did parents of kids on the other
- 30:54Speaker 1: team express concern or wonder if you are actually too old?
- 30:58Speaker 4: No, and this is a true story. You can ask
- 31:01Speaker 4: my parents. My mom had to really bring my birth
- 31:03Speaker 4: certificate everywhere I went au and when I played Little
- 31:06Speaker 4: League in football, I had to bring my birtha everywhere
- 31:09Speaker 4: because everybody made a big deal like I was too old.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Really I was younger than their kids too, because I
- 31:13Speaker 4: was playing eight U TENU when I was a year
- 31:16Speaker 4: young and everybody maybe two years young and everybody, so
- 31:19Speaker 4: I'm like, here, this is the birth certificate. True. You know,
- 31:23Speaker 4: I was born in Virginia. This is the certificate of
- 31:25Speaker 4: Virginia in the Commonwealth. This is my birth certificate. And
- 31:27Speaker 4: I'm this old. So they still didn't believe it though.
- 31:31Speaker 1: We're chatting with Jalen Rivers. You attended Oak Leaf High
- 31:35Speaker 1: School in Jacksonville and became one of the top offensive
- 31:38Speaker 1: line recruits in the country. It offers from Alabama, Michigan,
- 31:41Speaker 1: Penn State, you name it. Did you enjoy the attention
- 31:45Speaker 1: or did you get tired of it?
- 31:47Speaker 4: People that know me, they know I don't like attention.
- 31:49Speaker 4: I don't like the spotlight, but I've I'm used to
- 31:52Speaker 4: it now because even though I didn't like it, I
- 31:55Speaker 4: formed a you know, to I guess, embrace it at
- 32:00Speaker 4: one point in time because I'm I'm getting interviewed again.
- 32:02Speaker 4: Oh you know, everybody's like, you know, calling me up
- 32:04Speaker 4: to the office. My teachers like, hey, so and so,
- 32:06Speaker 4: coach is here, this school is here to see you.
- 32:08Speaker 4: So I mean, it was very fun to travel and
- 32:11Speaker 4: visit and do camps and all that, but at one point,
- 32:14Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm tired of this because I hate the attention.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Everybody's just like at school, like, oh my god, you
- 32:18Speaker 4: got offered today, and it's like yeah, but me mean,
- 32:21Speaker 4: but you know, I love I wouldn't trade it, like
- 32:23Speaker 4: I said, for anything, but I don't really like the attentioner.
- 32:27Speaker 1: You ultimately chose the University of Miami. Why the you?
- 32:32Speaker 4: It's funny because at one point it wasn't Miami wasn't
- 32:35Speaker 4: even consideration because they weren't recruiting me as hard. And
- 32:37Speaker 4: then they picked it back up towards some I want
- 32:39Speaker 4: to say, my end of my sophomore at first my
- 32:42Speaker 4: early junior year, but they just continue recruiting me hard,
- 32:45Speaker 4: and just like because at first I was about to
- 32:47Speaker 4: pick Georgia. I was about I was just close to
- 32:49Speaker 4: going to Georgia and then but Miami just kept recruiting me,
- 32:52Speaker 4: Hey can you come to this game? Hey can you
- 32:53Speaker 4: come this visit? And I kept going and you just
- 32:56Speaker 4: feel that family atmosphere. And of course the coaches that
- 32:59Speaker 4: were recruited me, some of them were still there when
- 33:01Speaker 4: I got there, but some of them weren't. But I
- 33:02Speaker 4: just still felt that I wasn't going because a coach,
- 33:05Speaker 4: but I just ever some went to you urse Miami
- 33:07Speaker 4: a visit. I was like, I just feel like family,
- 33:10Speaker 4: you know, oriented it just it felt like a family
- 33:12Speaker 4: atmosphere and I wanted to play it the U And
- 33:14Speaker 4: then you know it was close to home too, so
- 33:17Speaker 4: that played a factor. You know, it was Miami, Florida, Georgia,
- 33:22Speaker 4: but but Miami just stole it.
- 33:25Speaker 1: The Bangals selected you in the fifth round of this
- 33:27Speaker 1: year's draft. Described your draft weekend.
- 33:30Speaker 4: I was anxious because you know, during that draft, you
- 33:32Speaker 4: don't know when you're gonna get picked. You might have
- 33:34Speaker 4: an idea, your agent's like, oh maybe this round and
- 33:36Speaker 4: this round, but it's really a waiting game. But I
- 33:40Speaker 4: want to say I threw it was I had like
- 33:42Speaker 4: something on Friday where family just came over. During that
- 33:45Speaker 4: second day, second and third round, they came over and
- 33:47Speaker 4: we had like a smaller barbecue, but you know, I
- 33:49Speaker 4: was like, I might be I'm probably day three. So
- 33:52Speaker 4: but Saturday, everybody came back and we threw something. And
- 33:55Speaker 4: then it's just a waiting game. I just tried to
- 33:57Speaker 4: get my mind off everything, and you know, we had
- 33:59Speaker 4: some food food. I actually cooked mac and cheese because
- 34:02Speaker 4: I wanted to get my mind off of everything. But
- 34:04Speaker 4: I didn't want to wait, so I made mac and
- 34:06Speaker 4: cheese just you know, just with family. And then when
- 34:10Speaker 4: the fourth round started, you know, fifth round, I was
- 34:12Speaker 4: just just waiting, waiting, waiting, talking to my friend's family.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Then my name gets called or I get that call Cincinnati, Ohio,
- 34:21Speaker 4: and then I answered it is coach Taylor and he's
- 34:24Speaker 4: just talking and he's like, hey, we're gonna pick you
- 34:26Speaker 4: you know next. I'm like, oh my god, did I really?
- 34:29Speaker 4: I was speechless, but you know, I was just like
- 34:31Speaker 4: feel with gratitude at the time. And then after that call,
- 34:34Speaker 4: family has just recorded me. You know, I hate attention.
- 34:37Speaker 4: I get my hat. Then when they called my name
- 34:39Speaker 4: on the screen or put my name on the screen,
- 34:41Speaker 4: put my hat on. Just dap everybody up, hug everybody,
- 34:44Speaker 4: and then we just partied. You know, we we ate.
- 34:48Speaker 4: I didn't eat really that whole morning. I slept horrible
- 34:51Speaker 4: that night before because I was just my mind was
- 34:53Speaker 4: just I'm like, I need to know where I'm going
- 34:55Speaker 4: with her when I'm getting picked. But it was anxious,
- 34:57Speaker 4: but it was fun.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Your current Bank teammate Matt Lee, played with you for
- 35:02Speaker 1: one year at Miami. He said the following of everyone
- 35:05Speaker 1: I've played with, Jalen is one of the highest character
- 35:08Speaker 1: dudes ever. What does being a high character dude mean?
- 35:13Speaker 4: Do you? It means I come in every day with
- 35:15Speaker 4: a positive attitude. I never if I have a bad day,
- 35:18Speaker 4: I'm not really gonna show it because I'm here for
- 35:20Speaker 4: you know, I want to make everybody around me better.
- 35:23Speaker 4: So if I come in you know, drowsy or you know,
- 35:26Speaker 4: with low energy, then it's not making everybody around me better.
- 35:30Speaker 4: It's not making me better. So having a high character
- 35:32Speaker 4: just doing things the right way how I was raised,
- 35:35Speaker 4: not letting anything around me, any person around me, change me.
- 35:37Speaker 4: And just I mean just being me. I mean, I
- 35:40Speaker 4: don't really want to be fake or anything like. I
- 35:43Speaker 4: just be me and if somebody likes me, I just
- 35:45Speaker 4: I just had a good opportunity when I was at
- 35:47Speaker 4: Miami or my whole life, I just been me. I
- 35:50Speaker 4: just like making people around me better. And it's just
- 35:53Speaker 4: having a positive attitude, so having a high character. Everything
- 35:56Speaker 4: I do on the field, I'm gonna do it off
- 35:57Speaker 4: the field too, you know, just being the the person
- 36:00Speaker 4: my mother raised me, my parents raised me to be.
- 36:02Speaker 1: You shared with me previously that you are into cooking,
- 36:06Speaker 1: and you mentioned in this interview that you made mac
- 36:08Speaker 1: and cheese during the draft. How into it do you
- 36:11Speaker 1: watch cooking shows? Do you check out Cookbucks or recipes?
- 36:14Speaker 1: How deeply are you into cooking?
- 36:17Speaker 4: Well, my biological dad, he's a chef. He caters his
- 36:19Speaker 4: own catering business. So I never really cooked growing up
- 36:22Speaker 4: because I really didn't have the time. I was too
- 36:24Speaker 4: involved with sports class, you know, a year a long athlete,
- 36:26Speaker 4: doing school, I did not want to cook anything, actually
- 36:29Speaker 4: do anything else fro on my plate. So I want
- 36:32Speaker 4: to say, I just wanted to find out how to
- 36:34Speaker 4: be outside of football, and then I just started going
- 36:38Speaker 4: you know to visit my dad a lot more, and
- 36:40Speaker 4: then you know, he started teaching me recipes helped him
- 36:43Speaker 4: during catering events. I want to learn how to make
- 36:45Speaker 4: this because I want to make food. I don't want
- 36:46Speaker 4: to keep wasting my money buying food. So yeah, I
- 36:49Speaker 4: learned I can make really chicken, palm, any type of
- 36:53Speaker 4: post obviously braised ribs, mac and cheese, you know, shoot,
- 36:57Speaker 4: name it stuff, salmon.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm salivating. Who is your all time favorite athlete
- 37:04Speaker 1: in any sport?
- 37:07Speaker 4: I want to say Kobe Bryant just obviously he's a
- 37:11Speaker 4: legend on the court, but at the same time, what
- 37:16Speaker 4: he's done for the community too. And then just being
- 37:18Speaker 4: from Miami, I want to say also, or not from Miami,
- 37:21Speaker 4: but going to Miami. Ray Lewis too. You know, growing up,
- 37:25Speaker 4: my stepdad loved ray Lewis, so I watched him every
- 37:29Speaker 4: single time we watched the NFL Baltimore Ravens, watched clips
- 37:31Speaker 4: of him at Miami. You know, I love what he does.
- 37:34Speaker 4: He brings that energy, and just I love being around
- 37:37Speaker 4: people that just bring that energy. You just love the
- 37:38Speaker 4: game of football. So growing up, we watched a lot
- 37:41Speaker 4: of him, and then he's came back and taught to
- 37:43Speaker 4: Miami when I was at Miami a couple of years ago.
- 37:46Speaker 4: And great person.
- 37:49Speaker 1: All right, final fun fact for Jalen Rivers. This one's
- 37:51Speaker 1: kind of deep. If you could meet anyone in history,
- 37:56Speaker 1: living or deceased, who would that person be.
- 38:00Speaker 4: I'm just say family, cause it's like not really anybody,
- 38:03Speaker 4: any celebrity, but like just I'm a big family god.
- 38:06Speaker 4: So like my grandpa that passed away, Like I feel
- 38:09Speaker 4: like since I would move to Florida with my mom
- 38:11Speaker 4: and my stepdad, my dad was still in Virginia. That's
- 38:15Speaker 4: my dad's dad, and I really didn't have an opportunity
- 38:17Speaker 4: to form that bond really but when I lived in
- 38:20Speaker 4: Virginia or when I went back to Virginia, we saw
- 38:21Speaker 4: each other every time I went, but like I didn't
- 38:23Speaker 4: really form that grandson and grandfather bond. And every time,
- 38:28Speaker 4: you know, I went back, it was only for like
- 38:30Speaker 4: a couple hours. So and then he passed away when
- 38:32Speaker 4: I was a freshman in high school. So it's like,
- 38:34Speaker 4: you know, when that when he passed, I was like, dang,
- 38:37Speaker 4: but I wish he was still alive, so I can
- 38:39Speaker 4: you know, form that bond and you know, he would
- 38:41Speaker 4: love to see you know where I was. Even with
- 38:43Speaker 4: my mom's dad too. He passed away when I was
- 38:46Speaker 4: when I was about six seven. So yeah, I wish
- 38:50Speaker 4: my grandparents still alive so I can have this. They
- 38:53Speaker 4: can be on this ride with me.
- 38:54Speaker 1: They would both be very proud. I can promise you
- 38:57Speaker 1: that jailing this has been great and I appreciate your time.
- 39:00Speaker 1: I'm best have left the rest of the year.
- 39:01Speaker 4: Appreciate you have a great day. Thank you.
