- 0:07Speaker 1: Well, if you enjoyed musical chairs as a kid, you're
- 0:11Speaker 1: probably having a good time, but not everyone is enjoying
- 0:13Speaker 1: this particular round of musical chairs.
- 0:15Speaker 2: But anyway, you're on No Dribble.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Strap in.
- 0:19Speaker 4: Woo-hoo!
- 0:30Speaker 1: And welcome to No Dribble, the podcast where we talk
- 0:32Speaker 1: about netball, but we talk about so much more. My
- 0:34Speaker 1: name's Carolyn Swindell.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I'm Kath Cox.
- 0:37Speaker 5: And I'm Liz Ellis and I'm in the house.
- 0:40Speaker 6: I wonder if that's why your voice was so high
- 0:42Speaker 6: when you said strap in.
- 0:43Speaker 2: You normally quite guttural, like strap in. You were strapping.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Oh God, not you too.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Royalty in the house welcome you're well why are you
- 0:57Speaker 1: why are we lucky enough to have you here.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Well oh you know the answer and.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Device we use in podcasting oh.
- 1:04Speaker 5: It is what you ask a question that you know
- 1:06Speaker 5: the answer yes you also do that when you're a
- 1:09Speaker 5: barrister in court you never ask a question that you
- 1:11Speaker 5: don't know the answer to so for those of you
- 1:13Speaker 5: who wish to go down that line of profession, that's
- 1:16Speaker 5: one of the things you must know. Anyhow, so I'm
- 1:19Speaker 5: here because tomorrow, Tuesday, we are celebrating a year to
- 1:23Speaker 5: go to the Netball World Cup.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Oh my God. That's going to fly by too, isn't it?
- 1:28Speaker 4: It is.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 5: Given how fast the last few years have flown. So
- 1:32Speaker 5: every time anything comes up and I'm like a year
- 1:35Speaker 5: to go, I get a bit anxious because it's like, oh,
- 1:38Speaker 5: so much to do. We have a great team in place,
- 1:40Speaker 5: so that's okay. But there will be a big celebration tomorrow.
- 1:43Speaker 5: By the time this podcast has gone to air, you'll
- 1:45Speaker 5: know whether we've drowned or not on the floating.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Netball court over Sydney Harbour.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I'm excited.
- 1:49Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:49Speaker 2: What happens when a ferry.
- 1:50Speaker 6: Goes past and there's waves? Does the ball just roll
- 1:53Speaker 6: overboard and that's the end of the game?
- 1:54Speaker 2: Oh, wouldn't that be good?
- 1:55Speaker 5: Well, I'd rather a ball roll overboard than a player
- 1:58Speaker 5: roll overboard.
- 2:00Speaker 2: So Carolyn will be there.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Well, I'd rather a player roll overboard than a podcast host,
- 2:04Speaker 1: for instance.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I will be there in the morning. You're at a
- 2:06Speaker 1: lunch party.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah, so we've got a business Sydney lunch in the afternoon.
- 2:09Speaker 6: Can I just quickly interject with a story that just
- 2:12Speaker 6: reminded me of when the Diamonds were in camp, it
- 2:15Speaker 6: must have been when I was playing, but they had
- 2:17Speaker 6: some of the older Diamonds, the history of the Diamonds
- 2:21Speaker 6: come in.
- 2:21Speaker 2: It was when they used to travel by ship.
- 2:23Speaker 4: That's right.
- 2:23Speaker 6: To go to England and they would say that when
- 2:25Speaker 6: they were jacket training, oopsie, a ball would go overboard.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Can you imagine catching a ship to a World Cup.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Like you're months on board. Yes, before you even get there.
- 2:40Speaker 5: Yes, when we did get told that, it stopped us
- 2:43Speaker 5: whinging for a good 15 minutes or so.
- 2:46Speaker 1: 15, wow.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it really hit home.
- 2:48Speaker 5: We're like, okay, maybe we shouldn't whinge about having to
- 2:51Speaker 5: fly economy class to the U.K.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Anyway, we started to whinge. It's how you pass the time.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Although if you have long legs, being on a ship
- 2:59Speaker 1: is better than being in economy class, but it's the time.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Take it.
- 3:03Speaker 6: Yeah, because they also said they got sick, remember, because
- 3:06Speaker 6: of their lacking food or whatever else was on the ship.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Gastro on cruises. Oh, hi, Annie Marie. I hope you're
- 3:12Speaker 1: having a lovely honeymoon on the cruise. Yeah, so that
- 3:18Speaker 1: is tomorrow. Now, I have here some information from the
- 3:21Speaker 1: Netball World Cup. This is what I think is quite extraordinary,
- 3:24Speaker 1: is that we are, so we had the previous record
- 3:27Speaker 1: attendance at a World Cup, 110,168 attendees, plus my own
- 3:34Speaker 1: empire ticket.
- 3:34Speaker 3: I just went along because I was working there.
- 3:37Speaker 1: So we're aiming for 200,000.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Oh, surely that's easy.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Surely, surely.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Over the course of, what, a week or 10 days,
- 3:45Speaker 2: we should be able to do that. 12 days of competition.
- 3:48Speaker 2: That's right, Morda. It's almost like you know what you're
- 3:50Speaker 2: talking about and I don't.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Do we know what the very first game is? So
- 3:56Speaker 1: one year from now, will we wake up going, oh,
- 3:58Speaker 1: that was a blinder between... I don't know. Some people
- 4:03Speaker 1: might know, not us.
- 4:05Speaker 2: No, the draw will be done later in this year. So, yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Okay.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Everyone put your requests in. Liz needs more stuff on
- 4:12Speaker 2: her list. I do. I'd love to get everyone's ideas
- 4:16Speaker 2: on how you want the World Cup to run. That'd
- 4:17Speaker 2: be great. Thanks. Oh, God, there's not enough hours in
- 4:21Speaker 2: the day.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Do you know how many messages a week I get
- 4:23Speaker 1: for you? Can you ask Liz this?
- 4:25Speaker 7: No.
- 4:26Speaker 2: What's your own fault?
- 4:27Speaker 1: No.
- 4:27Speaker 2: What's our fault? We opened it up there. Ask the goat.
- 4:30Speaker 1: We invite it. Ask the goat. Yeah, but you can't
- 4:32Speaker 1: just send something. It has to be an entertaining question
- 4:36Speaker 1: for us all. But Catherine, how's your morning been?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Do you know what?
- 4:42Speaker 6: I actually thought this morning, well, I thought this year
- 4:45Speaker 6: I had hit a sweet spot. So this morning was
- 4:48Speaker 6: the Book Week Parade.
- 4:50Speaker 2: But about a month ago..
- 4:52Speaker 6: Harper comes home and goes, oh, we've been chatting at
- 4:54Speaker 6: school about book week and we're going to do a
- 4:56Speaker 6: group thing. And I'm like, oh my God, it's a
- 4:58Speaker 6: month out. Nearly died of shock because normally it's the
- 5:01Speaker 6: week before and then you're mad scrambled by the poor parents.
- 5:04Speaker 6: I was like, oh, this is great. So I sat
- 5:06Speaker 6: back and then someone's parent had apparently gone shopping and
- 5:10Speaker 6: got some stuff for them.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And this was all going to plan.
- 5:14Speaker 6: Next minute, Friday afternoon, Harper goes, oh, so apparently they
- 5:18Speaker 6: only got some costumes for a couple of the kids.
- 5:20Speaker 6: So Mum, so can we just spray paint this T-shirt?
- 5:25Speaker 2: What the hell do they think?
- 5:27Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll just get the spray paint out and I'll
- 5:29Speaker 6: sort your T-shirt out. And I'll just need to get
- 5:32Speaker 6: some green stockings. Oh, yeah, because green stockings are everywhere.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Dime a dozen. And then we'll sort it out. I'm like,
- 5:38Speaker 2: my God, give me a month.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:41Speaker 6: And then I can get on Timo and order all
- 5:43Speaker 6: the crap that you need. instead of giving it to
- 5:45Speaker 6: me at the last minute. Anyway, I don't know how
- 5:47Speaker 6: on earth we got half a costume together and sent
- 5:49Speaker 6: them along, but it was half-assed at first.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I saw the photo on your social media and it's
- 5:53Speaker 1: very good. And what I wanted to praise you on
- 5:56Speaker 1: is it's not just an out-of-the-box order online, here's your costume.
- 5:59Speaker 1: You actually, it's like this is brought together by, with
- 6:05Speaker 1: the greatest respect, an amateur costume maker.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Thank you, yes. But I still cop the shit. What's
- 6:11Speaker 2: the character?
- 6:12Speaker 6: Oh, so they all went as do not open this
- 6:14Speaker 6: book character, characters, and she was Nessie.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So like a green something. I don't know.
- 6:21Speaker 6: Anyway, but you still have to look good. So we
- 6:23Speaker 6: bought the green paint to do the face painting all
- 6:26Speaker 6: green because she had the green stockings, but then decided
- 6:29Speaker 6: she just wanted to put the green paint on.
- 6:31Speaker 2: As like blush. Just in these bits here. Like, oh,
- 6:35Speaker 2: for God's sake.
- 6:35Speaker 6: Anyway, I just sat back. We got the last minute costume. Like,
- 6:39Speaker 6: this is good as it gets. sit back and you
- 6:41Speaker 6: can do the rest of it. But then this morning,
- 6:43Speaker 6: he still says to me on the way, some parents
- 6:45Speaker 6: do such a good job with this stuff.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And then looked at me, I'm pretty sure I was
- 6:51Speaker 2: off the hook.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Can I share an outrage? My daughter is in high school.
- 6:57Speaker 1: They're doing Book Week.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 6:59Speaker 7: No. It's over.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Wait, just year seven or the whole of high school?
- 7:03Speaker 1: I don't care. She's in high school.
- 7:06Speaker 4: No.
- 7:07Speaker 6: Do you know what Harper School does really well is
- 7:09Speaker 6: they've got the two campuses, so the junior campus and
- 7:12Speaker 6: the senior campus. So when we got there this morning,
- 7:14Speaker 6: the senior campus had got the school band in and
- 7:18Speaker 6: the whole band.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Was marching around doing it. It was unreal. So the
- 7:21Speaker 2: place was buzzing.
- 7:22Speaker 1: So you think it was high school?
- 7:24Speaker 6: Yes.
- 7:25Speaker 2: So that's their contribution. They don't actually do book week
- 7:28Speaker 2: as such. That's very cool.
- 7:30Speaker 5: So this year book week for Austin's school, it's outstanding.
- 7:36Speaker 5: It's a toilet roll competition. No, paper towel roll competition.
- 7:39Speaker 5: So they all have to get a paper towel. roll,
- 7:42Speaker 5: you know, the long cylinders and decorate it in a
- 7:45Speaker 5: book character.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Oh, so they don't have to wear it. Oh, it's
- 7:50Speaker 2: so good. I'm like, mate, just go and glue some things.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:54Speaker 2: That's fantastic. It's so good. I got it and I'm like,
- 7:57Speaker 2: do you want to do it? He goes, not really.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I said, I'll just colour in something. You'll be fine.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I love that the school is doing this though because
- 8:03Speaker 1: it is absurd. It can get so out of hand.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I loved it. And I don't believe it's driving literacy necessarily, but,
- 8:12Speaker 1: you know.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Well, particularly when a lot of kids turn up as
- 8:15Speaker 5: movie characters and you can make a bit of a
- 8:17Speaker 5: tenuous argument that, you know, books and movies, and I
- 8:20Speaker 5: think I've said this before.
- 8:21Speaker 6: What?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Bless you.
- 8:23Speaker 5: I think I've said this before. Evelyn in her latter
- 8:26Speaker 5: years just turned up as, are you right, dude?
- 8:29Speaker 2: Are you allergic to me?
- 8:32Speaker 5: In the latter years of primary school, Evelyn just turned
- 8:34Speaker 5: up as Grace on the Court from Maddie Pratt's school.
- 8:37Speaker 5: So she just wore a netball uniform, which is fantastic.
- 8:39Speaker 5: But in terms of reading, she was into so many
- 8:41Speaker 5: other things. So I get that it's Like I sort
- 8:45Speaker 5: of understand stuff, but who's got time?
- 8:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 5: And between the Easter bonnet parade and, you know. Didn't
- 8:51Speaker 5: you say they made them do the bonnet at school?
- 8:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yes, which is fantastic. I'm loving it. That's what they
- 8:56Speaker 2: should do.
- 8:56Speaker 1: That's what primary school used to do.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Between the Easter.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Bonnet parade and school this week, there's a lot to
- 9:02Speaker 1: think about.
- 9:02Speaker 2: There is a lot to think about.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Anyway, I think I've said this before as well. I've
- 9:06Speaker 5: told this story before, but I shall tell it again
- 9:08Speaker 5: because it was my finest moment for book week. I
- 9:11Speaker 5: just went and bought a heap of secondhand saucepans and
- 9:14Speaker 5: Evelyn went as a saucepan man one year and she
- 9:17Speaker 5: loved it. No, the saucepan man from the Magic Faraway Train.
- 9:20Speaker 4: It was great.
- 9:21Speaker 5: We just hung saucepans around her and she just went
- 9:24Speaker 5: along and banged the saucepans.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Together and thought she was funny as. Got in trouble
- 9:27Speaker 2: for being a bit noisy in the classroom. But it
- 9:30Speaker 2: was great.
- 9:31Speaker 4: There you go.
- 9:31Speaker 6: So you've just got to have one big moment, you know,
- 9:35Speaker 6: like that you smashed it out of the ballpark and
- 9:37Speaker 6: then you're off the hook forever for life. It was
- 9:39Speaker 6: sad though watching the year sixes go around today but.
- 9:43Speaker 2: It doesn't sound like we need to worry about that.
- 9:45Speaker 1: No, I will give you comfort in knowing that the
- 9:47Speaker 1: Year 6 parents weren't sad.
- 9:49Speaker 3: The Year 6 parents were happy.
- 9:51Speaker 1: They will be sad when their kid leaves primary school,
- 9:54Speaker 1: but the end of book week is not, or the
- 9:57Speaker 1: Easter hat parade, these are not times. that you mourn.
- 10:01Speaker 1: You love Neville game.
- 10:03Speaker 6: Maybe.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Dance concert.
- 10:05Speaker 2: This means they're growing up though, you know.
- 10:08Speaker 1: They're growing up.
- 10:09Speaker 6: Anyway.
- 10:10Speaker 3: We're in the middle of HSC trials at the moment.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Oh, God. I didn't look where I slope.
- 10:15Speaker 3: The trial was for the parents.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Gordon. Like, it's so annoying. Why? Just he's really cranky.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Real cranky. The worst thing is he's a boarding school.
- 10:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:28Speaker 2: So does he not leave the cranky there? He brings
- 10:30Speaker 2: the cranky home.
- 10:31Speaker 3: No, he'd still get our food.
- 10:32Speaker 1: In fact, this weekend he even stayed Saturday night at
- 10:35Speaker 1: school because being in the middle of trials, as a
- 10:37Speaker 1: weekly boarder, he usually has to come home on Saturday morning.
- 10:40Speaker 1: But he was allowed to stay an extra night and
- 10:41Speaker 1: he did some extra study. But I think that we
- 10:44Speaker 1: got seven days' worth of crankiness in one day.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Oh, that was good of him to save it all.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And sugar in amongst it as well. But, you know.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I ate the sugar. It's on the bench. A whole
- 10:56Speaker 2: pile of chocolate chip cookies.
- 10:58Speaker 1: He's doing some therapy baking, which is nice. But, Liz,
- 11:04Speaker 1: you mentioned Maddie Proud's Grace on Court.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Which I think, once again, an outstanding segue because Maddie
- 11:11Speaker 1: Proud is now retiring from our great game. And I
- 11:15Speaker 1: think that we should probably take a little break and
- 11:18Speaker 1: then talk about some netball.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Good idea. Go me on the segue.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Go you on the segue. Have you ever written a segue,
- 11:37Speaker 1: one of those?
- 11:38Speaker 3: Oh, come on.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I love you, but no, don't ever do that. Absolutely not. Oh,
- 11:48Speaker 2: my God, no.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Given how busted I am from the weekend's netball game
- 11:51Speaker 5: that I just played when I was on both.
- 11:52Speaker 2: My feet, no. Yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 1: No.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I'd much rather do radio segues and wheeled segues. Have
- 11:58Speaker 2: you ridden one? You have to be quite– it's a balance,
- 12:01Speaker 2: isn't it? Like you're leaning forward to make it move and.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Back to– It does have handlebars, their segue, doesn't it?
- 12:07Speaker 1: It's not like the– well, there's– What are they?
- 12:10Speaker 2: Oh, the hoverboards.
- 12:11Speaker 5: Yeah, now the segways have handlebars just so you've got
- 12:14Speaker 5: something to fly over the top of.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Something to whack your teeth on.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 12:20Speaker 1: They used to have them around Uluru, but when we
- 12:23Speaker 1: went out to visit a couple of years ago, I
- 12:25Speaker 1: don't think that they still had them. So maybe common
- 12:28Speaker 1: sense is prevalent.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It's a long way from a hospital.
- 12:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:33Speaker 2: So we're going to.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Have to talk about signings. Obviously, we record on a Monday.
- 12:37Speaker 1: There's stuff that we know today that by the time
- 12:39Speaker 1: this goes to air won't be valid anymore. I do
- 12:43Speaker 1: have a very exciting announcement to make, which we alluded
- 12:46Speaker 1: to in the social media yesterday, but we're going to
- 12:49Speaker 1: do at the end of the segment. But we've been
- 12:51Speaker 1: talking to the Sirens and they're going to let us
- 12:53Speaker 1: share one of their major signings this week. So one
- 12:56Speaker 1: on Wednesday and one on Friday.
- 12:58Speaker 2: So exciting.
- 12:59Speaker 1: But big news has landed this week. Lots, lots of
- 13:03Speaker 1: huge news has landed. But I guess the biggest one
- 13:09Speaker 1: today for Monday morning is Kate Eddy. Kate won't be
- 13:13Speaker 1: playing in Super Netball next year. Kate Eddy, who I
- 13:17Speaker 1: think was bloody unlucky to not get picked up for
- 13:20Speaker 1: the Diamonds this year.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Kate Eddy, who had a blinder of a season.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 13:28Speaker 2: That's... Heartbreaking. And reading her post, it's.
- 13:33Speaker 6: Well, she said it's a miscommunication. So there's clearly more
- 13:36Speaker 6: to the story. But you have to wonder how much
- 13:39Speaker 6: this is going on. Players having conversations with clubs, clubs
- 13:42Speaker 6: assuring them there's a position until maybe in their.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Eyes something better comes up.
- 13:48Speaker 6: Because not long before that, Ash Irvin was announced as
- 13:51Speaker 6: going to the Vixens. I hadn't heard Irvin being on
- 13:54Speaker 6: the Vixens radar as a rumour at any point.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Had anyone else?
- 13:58Speaker 1: So that's one of the earliest rumours that I had heard,
- 14:00Speaker 1: that that is... Yeah, I had been hearing that for
- 14:04Speaker 1: quite some time.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Okay, good.
- 14:06Speaker 6: You just wonder how much is waiting for the ideal
- 14:10Speaker 6: player or one that's available. For instance, O'Shaughnessy not being
- 14:14Speaker 6: picked up. Now, who's going for O'Shaughnessy? There's so much
- 14:17Speaker 6: going on behind the scenes, as we've alluded to, but
- 14:20Speaker 6: it sounds like maybe she was promised a spot and
- 14:22Speaker 6: then the decision was changed.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:26Speaker 5: And, yeah, I don't know, but, I mean, I read
- 14:28Speaker 5: Kate's message this morning and I was disappointed for her
- 14:33Speaker 5: and disappointed for the Vixens. So the Vixens have had
- 14:35Speaker 5: this beautiful reputation as a really close-knit group and that
- 14:39Speaker 5: looks like that may not be the case anymore. And
- 14:43Speaker 5: Kate wrote some beautiful words about her teammates in particular
- 14:46Speaker 5: about Kate Maloney as a leader. And as much as
- 14:49Speaker 5: we've all been like, wow, this is so entertaining and
- 14:52Speaker 5: checking you out, you know, your feeds and that sort
- 14:54Speaker 5: of stuff. This is a really good example, I think,
- 14:56Speaker 5: of just the human toll that like a period like
- 15:00Speaker 5: this takes. And it's why, like, it's why I'm pleased
- 15:02Speaker 5: that this is the last time this sort of mad
- 15:05Speaker 5: scramble will happen because it was always going to be
- 15:08Speaker 5: the case that someone missed out somewhere. And the fact
- 15:12Speaker 5: that it's a player as good as Kate Eddy Whoa, she'll.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Be a huge loss to the league.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Well, and it was the words to write at the
- 15:19Speaker 6: end about being whatever's next.
- 15:22Speaker 2: And it's a bit scary. And it is so true.
- 15:25Speaker 6: Like if you've been an athlete, your whole working life,
- 15:29Speaker 6: so to speak, and, you know, haven't done much else,
- 15:31Speaker 6: what is next?
- 15:32Speaker 2: That is very scary. Yeah, really.
- 15:34Speaker 5: And- It's not like Kate would have had a long
- 15:39Speaker 5: time to think and plan for what's next. She would
- 15:41Speaker 5: have rightly assumed that she would have a contract, if
- 15:44Speaker 5: not with Vixens, then somewhere else. So, you know, when
- 15:47Speaker 5: I think about my retirement, I had lost time to
- 15:48Speaker 5: think about it. You had the same time to prepare
- 15:52Speaker 5: for it. But if suddenly you don't have a contract,
- 15:55Speaker 5: then it's pretty brutal.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Fingers crossed, though. The good thing is there's a lot
- 16:00Speaker 2: of holes still in team lists. Yes.
- 16:02Speaker 6: Now that that's been announced publicly, potentially someone goes, you beauty,
- 16:07Speaker 6: Kate Eddy.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I guess that means then, though, that someone else misses out.
- 16:11Speaker 1: And this is the really sad thing. I went to
- 16:14Speaker 1: a New South Wales Rugby Union lunch on Friday and
- 16:18Speaker 1: the CEO of Rugby World Cup, which is in Australia
- 16:22Speaker 1: next year, was there speaking and they're talking about 90%
- 16:26Speaker 1: of rugby players leave the game, not of their own accord.
- 16:30Speaker 1: So now there's only 10% of players who get to go,
- 16:33Speaker 1: I'm retiring now in the way that I want to. So,
- 16:37Speaker 1: you know, this is a product of professional sport. And,
- 16:40Speaker 1: you know, we had that great clip last week that
- 16:43Speaker 1: we shared on socials, Kath, and a lot of people
- 16:45Speaker 1: responded to what you were sharing there about the impact
- 16:48Speaker 1: upon you. But they were quite a very small minority
- 16:53Speaker 1: but a significant number of people going that's professional sport
- 16:56Speaker 1: it's like well yeah it is but they're still people
- 17:01Speaker 1: and we're still you know these are people's lives and
- 17:04Speaker 1: if you were um there's a great podcast called sportish
- 17:07Speaker 1: with Libby Trickett and Georgie Trickett so Libby was Libby
- 17:10Speaker 1: Lenton Lisbeth Lenton swimmer um Anyway, then they talk a
- 17:14Speaker 1: lot about sport, about parenting and the like.
- 17:18Speaker 3: And Libby had.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Watched that show with, who's the swimmer who ended up? Scott.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Scott Miller. Yeah.
- 17:27Speaker 1: And when she was talking about having watched the show,
- 17:30Speaker 1: the Scott Miller show, and she talked about what it
- 17:33Speaker 1: feels like to stand up there and accept a silver medal.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And when you have tried so hard and to understand
- 17:42Speaker 1: that people are going, well, you should be grateful you
- 17:44Speaker 1: could have not got any medal at all. But it's
- 17:46Speaker 1: like the intensity required to be the professional athlete or
- 17:51Speaker 1: the top level amateur athlete, depending on what sport you're with.
- 17:54Speaker 1: And that we, particularly as Australians, we are obsessed with
- 17:58Speaker 1: our athletes. Like we have to be understanding of the
- 18:01Speaker 1: fact that there is a personal toll on them. when
- 18:04Speaker 1: things don't work out the way they want. And I
- 18:06Speaker 1: suspect that rugby is not unusual, 90%. I suspect that
- 18:09Speaker 1: it's probably 90% of all top-level sports people have their
- 18:13Speaker 1: career ended by injury or non-selection or whatever else, not
- 18:19Speaker 1: in the way that they would desire.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's called a fairy tale because it's a fairy tale, right?
- 18:24Speaker 5: And, you know, yes, it's the price you pay for
- 18:29Speaker 5: having a professional league, but it doesn't make it an easy...
- 18:33Speaker 5: thing to swallow when you're the athlete. So I think
- 18:36Speaker 5: you're right. I think it's really difficult. And, you know,
- 18:39Speaker 5: when I sat on the board of the Australian Sports
- 18:40Speaker 5: Commission years ago, we grappled with this a lot about
- 18:44Speaker 5: how do you improve the road into retirement for athletes,
- 18:47Speaker 5: particularly when they don't know it's coming.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 18:50Speaker 5: And when they don't know it's coming and, you know,
- 18:53Speaker 5: it's the same for Olympic athletes, right? So they do
- 18:55Speaker 5: all that work and then they're superstars and heroes for
- 18:59Speaker 5: two weeks and happened a lot after the Sydney Olympics
- 19:01Speaker 5: and And then after the circus has moved on, what happens, right? So,
- 19:06Speaker 5: and I will say that Australian sport over the last
- 19:09Speaker 5: 20 years since I retired has generally moved ahead in
- 19:13Speaker 5: leaps and bounds. And there are, you know, people employed
- 19:17Speaker 5: in wellbeing roles at all super netball clubs and and
- 19:21Speaker 5: within Netball Australia. But it still doesn't make that moment
- 19:24Speaker 5: of losing your contract or not getting picked up easier.
- 19:26Speaker 5: It just means that there might be people to help
- 19:28Speaker 5: you transition into the next point. Like when I retired,
- 19:32Speaker 5: that's my retirement, I got the fairytale and there wasn't
- 19:36Speaker 5: that whole transition team whereas, you know, now there is
- 19:39Speaker 5: a bit more available but you can always do better
- 19:42Speaker 5: as a sport and reflect how you do it.
- 19:43Speaker 2: So we should.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Yeah, but there's been a lot of, yeah, a lot
- 19:47Speaker 1: of sadness, you know, Sharni Lamb has said she doesn't
- 19:50Speaker 1: have a contract. Haven't heard yet about Emily Mannix, but
- 19:55Speaker 1: it looks like she probably won't have a contract. I
- 19:57Speaker 1: don't think she's come out and definitively said, I don't
- 19:59Speaker 1: have a contract. Rudy Ellis is going.
- 20:02Speaker 2: To the Swifts.
- 20:03Speaker 6: The Swifts, another Ellis in defence.
- 20:05Speaker 2: For the Swifts. Makes me so happy. Oh my gosh.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Would you like to hear some other happy news?
- 20:11Speaker 4: Yes.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Yeah, because I've been doing some sniffing around and I
- 20:15Speaker 1: have been starting to talk to some people at SEN
- 20:18Speaker 1: and they're very conscious, Giants members, that the flow of
- 20:22Speaker 1: information has not been what you want it to be
- 20:25Speaker 1: at this stage and they don't officially take over until
- 20:28Speaker 1: the 1st of October. So I guess that means there
- 20:31Speaker 1: is quite a difficult sort of Whose job is this?
- 20:34Speaker 3: Who owns this information?
- 20:35Speaker 6: But this is good to know because we didn't know that.
- 20:38Speaker 6: I didn't know that. And I've been sitting at home going,
- 20:40Speaker 6: why am I still getting details from the giants? The
- 20:43Speaker 6: giants don't exist anymore. So even that is, I think,
- 20:46Speaker 6: really comforting to people to know.
- 20:48Speaker 3: And that's something.
- 20:49Speaker 1: So I haven't been given that information in confidence. I
- 20:52Speaker 1: saw that in the public domain that they don't officially.
- 20:54Speaker 1: And I guess that's just a, this stuff takes time.
- 20:57Speaker 3: There are legal processes about.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Who owns the entity and then when you can transfer
- 21:02Speaker 1: it over. And it's not just a matter of setting
- 21:04Speaker 1: up a new Instagram account and away we go. And
- 21:06Speaker 1: I guess there are probably, looking to the lawyer in
- 21:10Speaker 1: the room, that all of those social media accounts that
- 21:14Speaker 1: are signed up for the Giants netball, that data is, well,
- 21:19Speaker 1: that information of that account is given to Giants netball.
- 21:22Speaker 1: They can't just go, oh, we'll give that to whoever
- 21:24Speaker 1: the hell we want. there has to be a process.
- 21:26Speaker 1: So therefore, you know, these things are taking a little time.
- 21:30Speaker 1: So SEN are aware, they want Giants members to feel
- 21:37Speaker 1: very much a part of this and they very much
- 21:39Speaker 1: want you on board.
- 21:40Speaker 2: So you're saying sirens?
- 21:42Speaker 1: Yeah, well, SEN management.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, for the signs.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Oh, what was I saying?
- 21:46Speaker 2: Oh, you just kept saying SEN. I'm just clarifying that's
- 21:49Speaker 2: what you mean.
- 21:49Speaker 1: For the signs.
- 21:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:50Speaker 1: But anyway, as part of that, they have told us
- 21:53Speaker 1: some exciting information that we can share in today's podcast.
- 21:58Speaker 1: And that is a new signing. So this is a..
- 22:02Speaker 5: Oh, so Amy Sligo won't be playing the whole season
- 22:05Speaker 5: by herself.
- 22:05Speaker 4: No.
- 22:05Speaker 7: No.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Oh, that's great news.
- 22:07Speaker 6: I was looking forward to seeing it.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I mean, she's capable of it, but it would have
- 22:10Speaker 2: been impressive. You know those people that play all the
- 22:12Speaker 2: instruments on their knees? But I don't know.
- 22:17Speaker 1: They're going to need to do some more because it's
- 22:19Speaker 1: another mid-quarter.
- 22:21Speaker 6: Oh.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I guess.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Okay, so are they not new? Like this is a
- 22:27Speaker 2: player we've seen before?
- 22:28Speaker 1: We have seen this player in Super Netball.
- 22:31Speaker 2: But not for the Giants?
- 22:32Speaker 1: Not for the Giants. Oh. So they are new to
- 22:37Speaker 1: the club.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Can we play hot and cold?
- 22:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay.
- 22:40Speaker 6: So are they from a Melbourne club previously?
- 22:44Speaker 4: Hot, hot, hot.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Oh, okay. Are they from the Vixens? Cold, cold. Oh,
- 22:51Speaker 2: that only leaves the Mavericks.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot. I think I've
- 22:56Speaker 1: already said mid-quarter.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Oh, did one maybe spit a child out recently?
- 23:01Speaker 7: Oh!
- 23:02Speaker 1: Super hot, super hot.
- 23:04Speaker 2: What's the only one I can think of? Molly Jovi.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Molly Jovi, wow.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Oh, that's an exciting year now.
- 23:10Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:11Speaker 1: And I think because she put a post up last
- 23:13Speaker 1: week and was sort of talking about changing perspective on
- 23:17Speaker 1: netball since having her baby who is a boy named something.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Sorry, Molly.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Cute though.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Very cute. But, yeah, sort of talking about that change
- 23:28Speaker 1: of perspective and I think a few people thought, oh,
- 23:31Speaker 1: she's gone. She's out of netball. And then certainly in
- 23:34Speaker 1: one of my many netball group chats it's like, yeah,
- 23:36Speaker 1: she never said she was retiring so maybe she's going
- 23:39Speaker 1: somewhere else.
- 23:39Speaker 2: And you heard it here first. Wow.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Hopefully you heard it here first if you're listening to
- 23:45Speaker 1: us on a Wednesday. Molly Jovic is signing with the Sirens.
- 23:49Speaker 6: Big.
- 23:50Speaker 4: The Sirens.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Good pick-up.
- 23:51Speaker 6: And from what I've seen, players come back better when
- 23:55Speaker 6: they're mothers. So that's an even better pick-up.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Yes.
- 23:58Speaker 6: Wow.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Also, two mid-quarters are going to run the show.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Two mid-quarters are going to run the show.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Wow.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Captain, vice-captain, there they go.
- 24:05Speaker 1: LAUGHTER First in.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 1: We have another siren signing announcement on Friday. So do
- 24:13Speaker 1: join us then for that. But, yeah, so there's a
- 24:16Speaker 1: lot of good news. There's a lot of exciting news.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Swifts fans will have seen Mary Cholock is going to
- 24:21Speaker 1: be your shooter for this year.
- 24:22Speaker 6: So that is Kayla Graham signed with the Adelaide Thunderbirds.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Oh!
- 24:27Speaker 2: Yeah. So there's two goal shooters without a spot now, guys.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Just two. Vanderberg, Wecky.
- 24:34Speaker 7: Oh.
- 24:35Speaker 2: And only two teams left.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Only two teams left.
- 24:38Speaker 6: Thunderbirds and Sirens, hey? Do we just assume they're going
- 24:41Speaker 6: the way that we think they're going to go?
- 24:44Speaker 1: Oh, I think that the Thunderbirds would be very loath
- 24:47Speaker 1: to let them.
- 24:48Speaker 2: I agree. They would play.
- 24:49Speaker 6: Speaking of the Thunderbirds too, remember last week we said,
- 24:52Speaker 6: I'm surprised not to see any long-term signings yet. Yeah.
- 24:55Speaker 2: So Thunderbirds, two of them for three years, Shamira and.
- 24:59Speaker 1: The first three year was Amy Sligar.
- 25:01Speaker 6: Yes.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Wasn't she? That's amazing. Okay.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Wow.
- 25:04Speaker 6: Was she?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Did I miss that? So 2029.
- 25:07Speaker 6: Yes.
- 25:08Speaker 7: Jeez.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Awesome.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Okay, there you go.
- 25:10Speaker 6: But how good that you've got your two Jamaican superstars
- 25:13Speaker 6: as a package deal for the next three years to
- 25:15Speaker 6: the Adelaide Thunderbirds.
- 25:15Speaker 2: You'd be wrapped. What a place to start.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to some more Jamaican announcements this week.
- 25:21Speaker 1: We don't know what's happening out west. There's still some
- 25:25Speaker 1: spaces out there. We know we've seen some Jamaicans there.
- 25:29Speaker 1: But anyway, we will see. And do we know where
- 25:31Speaker 1: all of the Heffernans are yet?
- 25:32Speaker 2: No, Kate has not announced.
- 25:34Speaker 6: Georgia, though, after I said last week you'd be dumb
- 25:37Speaker 6: not to pick her up or after the Comm Games
- 25:40Speaker 6: I said that, has ended up in Lightning, obviously. That's
- 25:43Speaker 6: been announced throughout the week since we last spoke.
- 25:45Speaker 1: And Lightning are full now.
- 25:46Speaker 6: Lightning are the only club done, which I'm surprised about.
- 25:50Speaker 6: Still little patchy holes everywhere because I know I've made
- 25:53Speaker 6: myself a little two-pager. And I'm filling them in.
- 25:56Speaker 5: Flybirds have got three to go. Yeah, and getting Caracana
- 26:00Speaker 5: was a big get for them.
- 26:01Speaker 2: That's enormous. Yeah, massive.
- 26:03Speaker 1: But also..
- 26:04Speaker 2: What about Tabitha Packer though? Did anyone else go, who?
- 26:07Speaker 2: When that was announced? But how good is this? Like
- 26:11Speaker 2: this is not something we normally see. So there's also.
- 26:14Speaker 6: Been another new player for the Adelaide Thunderbirds and that's
- 26:17Speaker 6: Jasmine McKay.
- 26:18Speaker 2: But Liz and I..
- 26:20Speaker 6: We're kind of across that one because their mum, Sarah Suddy,
- 26:22Speaker 6: used to play. So I've seen Jazz on socials through Sarah.
- 26:27Speaker 6: But as far as Tabitha Packer, I had to get
- 26:29Speaker 6: straight on the Googles. Like, who is this kid?
- 26:32Speaker 2: Where does she come from?
- 26:33Speaker 1: And what have you learned?
- 26:34Speaker 6: Well, from Adelaide as well. So they're breeding them thick
- 26:37Speaker 6: and fast and an absolute superstar. So it plays across
- 26:40Speaker 6: wing defence, goal defence and mid-court, I believe. MVP in
- 26:45Speaker 6: the grand final at the under-19s last year. She was
- 26:48Speaker 6: a tournament MVP at the under-17s, so she's obviously an
- 26:51Speaker 6: absolute superstar.
- 26:52Speaker 2: How old is she? Two years training partner with the
- 26:54Speaker 2: Adelaide Thunderbirds, Price, 21. Wow.
- 26:57Speaker 6: So I love that we're finally seeing some fresh faces
- 27:01Speaker 6: in the mix as well as some new recruits that
- 27:03Speaker 6: might be coming internationally this year by the time this
- 27:05Speaker 6: is all wrapped up. Yeah, and should we be successful
- 27:08Speaker 6: in seeking Olympic inclusion? It's these players that will be
- 27:12Speaker 6: the ones that will be And in the perfect age
- 27:15Speaker 6: group come 2032.
- 27:16Speaker 2: So keep an eye on it. Yeah, it's amazing, isn't it?
- 27:19Speaker 7: Wow.
- 27:20Speaker 5: And it's funny, I got a bit teary when I
- 27:23Speaker 5: saw Jazz getting signed. I don't know what it is
- 27:25Speaker 5: when your old teammates, when their kids step up and play.
- 27:30Speaker 2: It's amazing.
- 27:31Speaker 5: It's like, you know, it's Shelley O'Donnell's daughter, Hannah Mundy
- 27:34Speaker 5: playing for the Vixens. Jenny Borlase from Adelaide, her daughter...
- 27:39Speaker 5: played at the olympics for the opals at the last
- 27:41Speaker 5: olympics her son is a footballer for adelaide so it's
- 27:44Speaker 5: just so lovely to see your old teammates you see
- 27:47Speaker 5: their kids pop up doing amazing things so i was
- 27:49Speaker 5: so pumped for sats.
- 27:50Speaker 6: And what a place for jazz to start shamira sterling
- 27:53Speaker 6: humphrey and latonya wilson that's who she's playing in defense
- 27:57Speaker 6: with yep oh.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Phenomenal how good how good my god Very exciting.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Well, hopefully, I don't know, by the time, we keep
- 28:06Speaker 1: saying this, by the time this goes to air, everything
- 28:08Speaker 1: will be done and dusted. But, you know, maybe we
- 28:11Speaker 1: don't do done and dusted in it. Well, it's got
- 28:13Speaker 1: to all be done by next week, I think, doesn't it?
- 28:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Next week we have to start announcing the 11th player,
- 28:18Speaker 1: I think. Anyway, but, yes, exciting news. Also some sad news,
- 28:23Speaker 1: and that's a bloody sad reality of professional.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Sport, I think.
- 28:27Speaker 1: But speaking of which, what?
- 28:31Speaker 4: Nothing.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Just looking at you with admiration as usual.
- 28:36Speaker 1: We should take a little break and come back and
- 28:38Speaker 1: talk about professional sport.
- 28:40Speaker 7: Okay.
- 28:53Speaker 1: I have a massive thing that makes me go, hmm,
- 28:59Speaker 1: this week. And I reckon as a nation, probably quite
- 29:03Speaker 1: a few of us have been saying, hmm, this week
- 29:06Speaker 1: in the most irritated fashion. So obviously we've seen what's
- 29:09Speaker 1: happened with the Sydney Swans this week. And that is
- 29:12Speaker 1: a very sadly familiar bloody story that we are seeing
- 29:18Speaker 1: this again, where it appears that some men think that
- 29:22Speaker 1: a woman's body is up to them to make a
- 29:24Speaker 1: decision about. Setting aside All of that. And it's very
- 29:28Speaker 1: hard to set it aside because it's a criminal offence.
- 29:30Speaker 1: It's grossly disrespectful. It has..
- 29:34Speaker 2: It is alleged. Allegedly.
- 29:35Speaker 6: Yes. Yeah.
- 29:36Speaker 1: All allegations. But can I point this out? And this
- 29:40Speaker 1: is something that has burned in my head since I
- 29:43Speaker 1: heard this. Isaac Heaney, against whom there are allegations at
- 29:47Speaker 1: this stage, appears to be on a salary, a base
- 29:51Speaker 1: salary of between $ 1 million and $ 1. 3 million. That is his,
- 29:55Speaker 1: on six-year contract, that is his base salary. Now, from
- 29:59Speaker 1: what I can tell in the public arena, again, a
- 30:03Speaker 1: super netball salary cap for a team of 10 professional
- 30:07Speaker 1: players is $ 890, 000. So this one player is worth, let's say,
- 30:19Speaker 1: all of the Adelaide Thunderbirds and half of the Dixons.
- 30:23Speaker 3: So that is one player's salary. We get those 15 players.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Couple of issues for me here. One, you don't think
- 30:31Speaker 1: in the week before you started to look at going
- 30:33Speaker 1: into the finals that you should probably take that massive
- 30:36Speaker 1: salary and go home to bed to make sure that
- 30:38Speaker 1: you are ready to be fresh for the game. And
- 30:43Speaker 1: regardless of what the allegations are with the young woman
- 30:45Speaker 1: in question, they were out on the piss. You are
- 30:49Speaker 1: earning that much money. But also, can I ask the sponsors,
- 30:53Speaker 1: what are you doing? Why are we investing so much
- 30:56Speaker 1: money in the sports that keep being on the front
- 30:59Speaker 1: page for absolutely the wrong reasons when we have this
- 31:02Speaker 1: sport with these incredible athletes who are not just athletes
- 31:07Speaker 1: but role models and they are getting, like even the
- 31:11Speaker 1: best of the players, are getting less than a tenth
- 31:15Speaker 1: of one of these players who doesn't think it's important
- 31:18Speaker 1: that he does his job well enough for his fans
- 31:21Speaker 1: that he should go and get some bloody rest. I just,
- 31:24Speaker 1: this defies logic to me and it almost makes a
- 31:28Speaker 1: mockery of it saying this is the things that make
- 31:30Speaker 1: you go, hmm, segment, because it's actually the things that
- 31:32Speaker 1: make me go, for fuck's sake.
- 31:36Speaker 6: I could almost see the steam coming out of your ears. Alex,
- 31:40Speaker 6: when you put this on socials, can you just do a.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Little bit of, that'd be good, thanks.
- 31:45Speaker 4: Anyway.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Fair enough. Well said indeed.
- 31:49Speaker 1: AFL salary cap $ 17. 7 million per club. Oh, I'm dreaming
- 31:56Speaker 1: all day. Now, they do have to have 37 to
- 31:59Speaker 1: 44 players within that cap, but the disparity here is extraordinary.
- 32:03Speaker 1: NRL salary cap for 30 players is $ 11. 95 million a season.
- 32:06Speaker 1: So it's just... There's so much more money in these games.
- 32:14Speaker 1: And then as a result, the women who are playing
- 32:16Speaker 1: the same games, AFLW and NRLW players, they don't get
- 32:20Speaker 1: paid anywhere near what the blokes get paid, but they
- 32:23Speaker 1: get paid more on average than a Super Netball player does.
- 32:26Speaker 1: And I think that there's a lot of sponsorship professionals
- 32:30Speaker 1: who should probably be taking the look, well, what's the
- 32:33Speaker 1: impact that we can have if.
- 32:35Speaker 2: We were to start supporting Australia's largest participation.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Sport for women and girls? Here endeth the rant.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Thank you for coming to your TED Talk. Look, it's
- 32:48Speaker 2: just made us all go. Head scratching continues.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Shall I say something a bit brighter to finish this?
- 32:55Speaker 4: Yes.
- 32:55Speaker 2: I think we should. I think it's necessary.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Okay. So we talked last week about how hard it
- 32:59Speaker 1: is to get a four-peat in any sport, and I
- 33:02Speaker 1: was very happy to hear from Natalie George from ACT.
- 33:06Speaker 1: So ACT State League Division 1. Tuggeranong have just completed
- 33:10Speaker 1: the four-peat. They had a win on the weekend.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Well done.
- 33:14Speaker 1: 69 to 48, but four times in a row.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Well done, Tuggeranong.
- 33:19Speaker 1: It's bloody amazing.
- 33:20Speaker 2: That is outstanding. I used to work at Shady Hayes
- 33:23Speaker 2: Surf Shop in Tuggeranong.
- 33:24Speaker 6: Did you? Well, when I say used to, there was
- 33:27Speaker 6: that one day that I went to work at Shady House.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I saw you in Canberra at Riley Fair Surf Shop
- 33:34Speaker 1: in Canberra. We know why you're working there.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:37Speaker 5: Did you have your dyed your hair with Ajax that
- 33:40Speaker 5: week when you went to work there?
- 33:41Speaker 2: See, this is my dream job come true.
- 33:43Speaker 6: No, I was at the AIS and we had to
- 33:45Speaker 6: have jobs or do something if we weren't studying and
- 33:49Speaker 6: And I knew the Shady Hayes owners while I'd babysat
- 33:52Speaker 6: for their family and worked a bit with them in Sydney.
- 33:54Speaker 2: And then when I moved to Canberra, I rang them
- 33:57Speaker 2: and they said, yeah, we can have you at Tuggeranong
- 33:59Speaker 2: at our store. At that beachside suburb of Tuggeranong. It's
- 34:04Speaker 2: a bit of a hike.
- 34:06Speaker 6: Yeah. So when I drove out there one day and
- 34:07Speaker 6: did one shift, I was like, man, I don't think
- 34:09Speaker 6: this is going to work for me.
- 34:11Speaker 1: It's not only a bit of a hike. Where's the AIS?
- 34:14Speaker 1: It's in Bruce, isn't it?
- 34:16Speaker 7: Yes.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Oh, sorry, yes. Yes, Bruce.
- 34:18Speaker 1: But it's not only a fair hike from there, it's
- 34:20Speaker 1: a fair hike from any water source.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Yeah, the touch.
- 34:25Speaker 1: So H-A-V-E, is it Shady?
- 34:29Speaker 2: Shady Haze. I don't think, do you remember them? They're
- 34:32Speaker 2: a massive surf shop, massive. I don't think they exist anymore.
- 34:35Speaker 4: No.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Yeah. No, I didn't pay attention to the surf culture.
- 34:38Speaker 1: But I love that we get to repeat this again.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Marilyn Bell said she also dyed her hair with Ajax.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Oh, did she? Ajax was her choice as well.
- 34:46Speaker 3: She had some.
- 34:47Speaker 2: How funny we didn't try bleep.
- 34:48Speaker 1: She was talking about what she and her friends used
- 34:50Speaker 1: to do with Tanny and they would get some alfoil
- 34:53Speaker 1: involved so it was highly recommended.
- 34:56Speaker 5: I swear to God, yeah, Marilyn put that up and
- 34:59Speaker 5: I thought I was reading a recipe. LAUGHTER I was like,
- 35:03Speaker 5: oh my God, no, she did that to herself. You
- 35:05Speaker 5: absolutely would not do that to yourself now. You know,
- 35:08Speaker 5: I went through a phase when my kids were little
- 35:10Speaker 5: of just letting them run around on the beach in
- 35:12Speaker 5: the Nicky Noona and a lady came and lectured me
- 35:13Speaker 5: one day about sunburn.
- 35:15Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, it's 9am.
- 35:17Speaker 5: I reckon my kids can run around the Nicky Noona
- 35:19Speaker 5: for a little bit longer. There's just something so nice
- 35:21Speaker 5: about seeing your naked kid in their little bottom on
- 35:23Speaker 5: the beach.
- 35:23Speaker 2: But you also, don't you need a level of vitamin
- 35:26Speaker 2: whatever comes from the sun? D. Yeah, which you can't. Yeah,
- 35:28Speaker 2: same thing. Please. Why do people think they should interject
- 35:32Speaker 2: in that? I don't know. I mean, we moved to
- 35:33Speaker 2: rushes when we had to.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:36Speaker 2: When we got sensible.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Well, that's about all we've got time for. Our live
- 35:41Speaker 1: event on the 24th of October, we have sold 30%
- 35:44Speaker 1: of tickets for that. So there's no bigger venue within
- 35:48Speaker 1: the venue. Once we're sold out, we're sold out for
- 35:51Speaker 1: that one. So that's exciting. That is, of course, on
- 35:53Speaker 1: Constellation Cup Eve here in Sydney.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Eve.
- 35:57Speaker 2: When I hear Eve, I hear permission to drink.
- 36:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 36:00Speaker 2: A little bit. Put your Christmas tray up. I'll do
- 36:05Speaker 2: that when I get home. It's going to be long
- 36:06Speaker 2: before now.
- 36:07Speaker 3: So, yeah, one year to go.
- 36:08Speaker 1: By the time you hear this, it will be less
- 36:09Speaker 1: than a year to go to Netball World Cup tickets. Liz,
- 36:13Speaker 1: do you have an update on ticket sales?
- 36:15Speaker 4: No.
- 36:16Speaker 5: On Netball World Cup ticket sales? I do that you
- 36:18Speaker 5: need to register for the pre-sale.
- 36:20Speaker 3: Okay.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Fans are being urged to brace yourself and register their
- 36:24Speaker 1: interest at nwc2027. com to be first in line when general
- 36:29Speaker 1: tickets go on sale. But, yeah, there is an option
- 36:32Speaker 1: where you can sign up to get priority access to
- 36:35Speaker 1: to the tickets so get around that because it's gonna
- 36:39Speaker 1: be fun all right that's all we've got time for
- 36:41Speaker 1: today we'll be back on friday with another siren signing
- 36:45Speaker 1: announcement i'm carolyn
- 36:47Speaker 2: Swindell i'm kath cox i'm ms ellis bye
