Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Hey guys, welcome back to Scooter Energy.
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: This is your little section, and I'm really excited about this episode today because as many of you know, I'm a huge believer in a lot of the technology that's behind skin health.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: And one of the biggest, I think, leaps forward that we've had in the skin health space has been around the use of LED and the use of light to enhance our efforts towards anti-aging.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the co-founder of Therabody, Ben Nazarian.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, Ben.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited to host you and to learn from you today.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: I am too.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Thanks for having me.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's truly an honor.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: And I would love to get started, Ben.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: If you could give us a little background on Therabody and yourself and what really started the brand and especially going into the beauty realm with Therabody Beauty.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: So if you could tell us a little bit about that.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: I think that background is actually really relevant as to why we got into beauty.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: So it's a great starting point.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: For those of you who don't know, Therabody was created really with its first product called Theragun.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: For a number of years, the name of the company was actually Theragun.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: And Dr.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Jason invented the Theragun as a result of a motorcycle accident.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And he had significant muscleskeletal injuries.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: And his choices were painkillers and medication or surgery.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And he was looking for a much more holistic approach to recovery and dealing with the pain and curing himself, healing himself.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: And he was familiar with vibration and it gave him some temporary relief, but it did not end up really healing him.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The benefit wore off.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: And he thought, what if I get something that goes deeper into the muscle, is working with the nervous system?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And lo and behold, he invented the uh theragun.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: That was in 2008.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: I met him in 2015.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: And I believe that things happened for a reason, and it was really meant to be.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: I've had back problems my entire life, and I'm very familiar with different treatments to deal with my muscoskeletal injuries.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: And when he used a Theragun on me, it was quite a revelation because it helped treat my muscles without the typical pain of deep manual muscle therapy.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: And we launched a company in 2016.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And I don't think we ever thought we would be creating a whole new category called massage guns.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: But fast forward, I remember we had a meeting internally, and somebody, this is before there's any other massage guns on the category, were the only ones, and people didn't even know what a therapy gun was or percussive therapy was.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And somebody said to me in a meeting, who's our competitor?
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: And now obviously there's a lot of massage guns on the in the category, so it's an easier answer.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: But at the time, I thought about Jason's story.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And I thought about he had the option of surgery or painkillers, opiates, and we all know what a big problem opiates are in not just the US but worldwide.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And I said, you know, our competition's advil.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: If we can get people to stop taking pain medication and they can use our products, our technology, and really understand it and understand the science behind it and why it works for them, then we've done a lot of good.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And that was a little bit of a light bulb moment for our company because we realized that there's a lot of other technologies that would also help the consumer deal with different health problems, wellness problems, and how to help them deal with it as an alternative to pain medication.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And for those who know me, they know I don't even take Advil.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: I try to be very natural, very holistic in my approach.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Obviously, sometimes you just need to take medicine.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: There's no other cure, and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: But I don't think it should be the first step.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And how do we even prevent injuries, prevent pain?
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: And so that's been a core part of our mission.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And we've really gone beyond Theragun to expanding and having new products that are dealing with various problems like pain relief, recovery, stress, sleep.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And then beauty became a natural migration from that.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: And happy to get into that if you'd like.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that's such a fascinating story.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you for sharing that.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Because I remember when I first discovered the Theragun, right?
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, as a consumer, and I was just like, this is so cool, you know, because as for me, from my side as, you know, as a doctor, I look at people who are going through chronic pain.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: And a lot of times it's because of just it's very hard to target the muscle groups that are causing that pain.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, a product that you can take at home or bring with you, you know, to your home and use on the daily that's not invasive, that's not a medication, like you had mentioned, you know, like I'm also a believer and don't take a lot of advil, you know, because of gastric issues and stuff.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: So I completely resonate with everything you said.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: And I think it's absolutely brilliant that you guys truly is a revelation in OTC products, you know, merging into this kind of medical clinical realm, right?
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's creating options that we don't, you know, we don't really use in medicine, is my point.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: And so it's a very fascinating story indeed, you know, with the Theragun.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: So, but you know, I want to talk a little bit about Theraphase because I know the Theraphase Pro, you know, for all our listeners out there, maybe Ben, you could tell us a little bit about Therapace Pro, like a background on it, but it's very much a reflection of the gun, right?
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: And in a lot of ways.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: It's a it's a really an extension of the Theragun.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: And I can tell you, we didn't think about it.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: It wasn't our idea.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: I think one thing we're really good at as a company is innovation, but the other part is listening to our consumers.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: For those of you who've used a Theragun, it's a very strong device.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: It was designed for our major muscles, the glutes, hamstrings, calves, the shoulders, upper back.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And we always tell people do not use it above your shoulders, do not use it on your neck, your head.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: And it's too strong for that.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: We we had come out with a very soft attachment for people who are sensitive or ticklish.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's called a super soft.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: And we saw a number of people using that with our mini, which is a little bit gentler than the traditional Theragun, and they were using it on their face.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: And our first reaction was, what are you doing?
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: That's not right.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, please stop.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And yet followed on with a question of wait a minute, why are you doing that?
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And then what's the benefit?
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And really, our consumers were telling us that they were using the super soft attachment with the mini for jaw pain, headaches, tension.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: And it got more and more interesting.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: They started talking about sinus pain, sinus drainage, and then lymphatic drainage.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: And the lymphatic drainage, which is obviously a very popular treatment today and has major health and beauty benefits, really got our attention.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: And so we realized that people should not be using the mini on the face.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Why don't we design a product specifically for the head and the face?
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: And we designed a therapist.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: And we're always thinking about, like you said, how do we bring the clinic into the home?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: How do we bring medical technologies into the home so consumers can also treat themselves, not as a replacement of a clinician, a professional, or a doctor, but really how do we help ourselves in between those appointments, in between the treatments?
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: And we ended up realizing also we want to create more value for the consumer.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: So why don't we see if we can make a multi-therapy device?
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Let's not just make a theragon for the face, but how do we add other modalities?
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And really, Therapace was inspired by all of those ideas coming together.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: The team did a great job.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: At the core is the percussive therapy treatment, which has got both pain, health, and beauty benefits.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: But then we realized we can create this really unique design that allows you to swap out different attachments.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: And now we have microcurrent as part of the therapase, LED technology, a cleanser.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And there's a lot of cleansers out there, but when you combine it with our percussive therapy, it works more effectively.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: It has cold attachment and a hot attachment.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: And I think there's opportunity to build and add more attachments over time that connect to the core device.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: So instead of people going and spending hundreds of dollars on various devices, and we all know that depending on the time of year, our skin condition, and even the time of day or what we've done last night, we need different solutions for our face, for our skin.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: And so this is the first device that really provides true customization and flexibility because people can use the attachment, the technology, the therapy that they need at the time.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: And that has been a big hit with both consumers and the industry because now consumers don't have to buy a number of devices, multiple devices, and spend hundreds of dollars and really take up a lot of space on their counter.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Therapist does it all.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: And that's been the premise.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: No, I absolutely love it though.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know, and I love that you you guys crafted this product like this because I kid you not, when I first, like me as a consumer, when I first discovered, for example, microcurrent, right?
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Like let's use that as an example because I think a lot of us have had some experience with microcurrent at some point, you know, whatever device you might use at home, or we're listening.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: I know all of you have seen it somewhere or used it, or you know somebody uses it.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: And I think one of the biggest questions I immediately had, you know, as a consumer was I wish I could take this device, like, you know, like the main part of it and switch it, you know, switch the components out.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Because with microcurrent, there's so many other things you want to do as well, right?
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: And I mean, it's great to have that that one piece of treatment.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: But then also, like, as you mentioned, like, you know, you guys have that cryotherapy kind of ring that's attached, like the, you know, the different temperature components, right?
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: That that all kind of plays together.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: And I think one of the really interesting parts of this for me is that it really brings this holistic view to understanding how devices actually work for at-home use.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of times we focus so hard on like, you know, one thing, like where it's, you know, again, with the microcurrent analogy, you focus so hard on the microcurrent that we forget that there's a lot of benefit that can come with the synergistic, the synergistic impact of other modalities.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: If you were uh if they were available to you.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: So I think it's absolutely brilliant what you've created here.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's I think it's much needed actually in the space.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: And when we came out with it, people were wondering, well, therabody beauty.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: And it was really not supposed to be just for beauty.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: It's really thinking about the entire face, overall health, and our health, part of our beauty is based on skin health.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: How does our skin look?
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: And if we can keep it healthy, and it really is, does tie to the original mission?
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: We can provide technology and solutions that are backed by science that we know work.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: We have a clinical study to back it up.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: So we're not, we're an authentic company, we're not gimmicky.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: How do we show that to consumers so that they can treat their face as an alternative to traditional medication, chemicals, or even surgery?
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: And so I think the idea of skin health is really becoming part of beauty.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: And we believe that we're well positioned to lead the industry from a beauty tech device category.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: I think you guys are really onto something here because, you know, I want to talk a little bit about that, the attachments that are like the temperature, you know, focused attachments.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: I know the the ring that is it cools down to a really like, you know, can you tell me like the exact temperature that it really cools down to?
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: There's an attachment for everyone listening.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: There's an attachment with a Theraphase Pro that it's kind of like cryotherapy, you know, targeted cryotherapy for your face, and it's very, very efficient.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Like it's it really works.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm curious because it gets quite cold when I was using it.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: So I'm just curious, what is the actual temperature on that?
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I believe that the current temperature it gets to is about 16 degrees.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: You know, when we came out with that technology, it was really, I would say, very, very unique and first gen, because right now the solutions for cold are people have to put something in a freezer.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: And by the time they take it out and they use it on one side of their face, then it gets too warm by the time you get to the second part of your face.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: And if you're traveling, you know, you can't really use your freezer.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: So you're limited in terms of how functional that is.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: We we our RD and innovation is something that is very unique.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: We spend a lot of time and money investing in looking at different technologies, and we identify cold as an opportunity both for skin health and for beauty.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: And I think we're very early on in how we think about cold and and the technology can be further improved from there.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And then how do you combine cold with other technologies?
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: So, RD, and one thing, again, that makes us unique, and I heard this from many people in the industry, is that there's a lot of companies that have invented a unique technology, but they haven't innovated past that to second, third generation.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: They have not expanded to other technologies.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: And so I think we have an opportunity to do that, and we have an opportunity to really drive engineering and RD to further improve our technology.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: And so cold is really something that we believe has major benefits.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: You can use cold for depuffing, it helps with firming of the skin and the muscles.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: And as our technology improves, we think we can even improve the temperature from the 16 degrees.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: And we're very excited by the potential.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: I was talking to someone in the spa industry, and she could not believe that something that goes on a device that did not have to be refrigerated or put in a freezer could get cold electronically using a battery and how cold it got.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: And she was really blown away by the level of innovation and engineering it took to accomplish that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: So we think we're onto something.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: We think that there's opportunities to further improve it, but that's a real good example of using engineering and innovation to create a new solution for consumers.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: I think it's just brilliant.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, I really, really like this attachment, particularly because I think, you know, you had mentioned lymphatic drainage earlier.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: And one of the key things that people seem to miss with lymphatic drainage is it's not just about pressure application, right?
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: So we have a lot of things like, for example, you know, as you know, Vendor, there's like washa out there, there's a lot of stuff.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: And I know that Therap Base also has an amazing attachment as well for the pressure component.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: But one thing that we don't talk about is how much of a role cold temperature plays in lymphatic drainage.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a there's a link in cited in papers, you know, about how temperature fluctuations, especially when they're rapid temperature fluctuations, they actually improve lymphatic drainage.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: So that's what I mean when I, you know, you were speaking earlier.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: I I really believe in the holistic nature of this device, you know, because it's not just about, okay, well, I did my microcurrent, I did my, you know, my pressure therapy, I did my cold therapy.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: No, it's about doing everything in a way that you are aiding your body and carrying out the functions it normally carries.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: And I think a lot of times consumers, we miss the mark on that, you know, because we don't understand that the human body is not a one step.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: It's multiple steps that that occur, you know, to create something like anti-inflammatory conditions or, you know, like you had mentioned mentioned puffing earlier, like, you know, it to depuff the face is a multifactorial thing.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it causes, it leads to like, you know, vasoconstriction when you're putting, you know, cool temperatures on there.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of inflammatory mediators that are, you know, downregulated.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: And all of that is happening in a very sophisticated way in the body.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: And so as consumers, we're shopping for things like devices for, you know, facial health and skin health, we have to keep that in mind.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: That there it isn't anymore this idea of one and done, you know, like you have to look for things that offer you options.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: And I think that's where their face pro really shines for me as a consumer because I can do my LED therapy, I can do the pressure therapy.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: And then when you add the cold at the end, then I'm decreasing all of that other inflammation that I'm also worried about.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: So at the end of all of that, you know, what that time frame, I'm left with the exact results I want.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Plus, I know I've done it in a way that actually makes sense according to normal physiology.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: You know, so that's where I'm like, I really love what you've done.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: It's like, it's very, very innovative and it's very like like you said, first gen, you know, very cutting edge.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: So I I want to ask you actually, you know, if you can go into a little bit more details, like on all of the attachments.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: I would love to learn more about them.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: And so our listeners can learn as well, all the different attachments that are offered with the Theraphase Pro.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: And by the way, I just want to kind of really acknowledge what you just said.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: You talked about how our body, and I believe it's a very powerful and in some ways magical system.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: And if we can help it, it really does work better and it can solve a lot of problems.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: And so you're absolutely right.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: In terms of if we can support the body the right way, that by itself will naturally create the conditions that we want and help us be healthier and have overall better look, skin condition, et cetera.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: So I think it's really important and we should not lose that point.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: I, you know, I'm just curious though, like, you know, these attachments are just, I I think I feel like they're were very well thought out, you know, what you guys decided to put on there as the initial attachment.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: So what what was the decision process in that?
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: You know, what how did you figure out what you wanted to offer?
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: So we we looked at various technologies.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: What do we know that has efficacy that we can stand behind?
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: What can we explain to consumers and know that it serves a need that they have?
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: And I'll give you an example.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: When we obviously the core of it was starting with percussive therapy and has, as I said, both health and skin and beauty benefits.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: But we thought we have room while someone's getting treated.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Why don't we add LED lights?
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: And the LED has got red, blue, and then the red and infrared together.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: And so while you're massaging your face, you're getting the benefit of LED light, which really helps with either wrinkles or acne.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: And it's an additive.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I don't think that one should expect to do therapace percussive massage with the LED, and now all the wrinkles go away.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: But that's what drove us to come out with the LED mask, where the entire mask with the 648 lights is very powerful, clinical grade, and that covers the entire face.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: And in nine minutes, really gives you a full treatment at home while you can do other things.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: And that does, we have a clinical study for that device showing how it helps reduce wrinkles.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And then the blue light helps with acne as well.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: So all of these are a system, they are complementary to each other, and the LED mask has been a very big hit.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: So that was kind of the rationale behind LED.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Microcurrents was really driven by the idea of firming and toning and lifting the skin and the facial muscles.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: We spent a lot of time looking at the engineering, the specs, making sure that it is at the optimal level.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: It's interesting.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Some people say it just doesn't zap me enough.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: It doesn't need to.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: I think that people feel that if there's no pain, then they're not getting the benefit.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: That's not the case.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: It was really engineered to make sure it is delivering the benefit that we want.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't have to be painful to get there.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: And we spent a lot of time thinking about ergonomics and how does it fit the face.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: So those are all the things that we're thinking about as we engineer our products and really try to talk to the consumer, understand what works for them, what do they want, and frankly, what are they not getting?
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: What do they want to see?
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: And build all of that into our products to make sure it is the best device out there.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: And I'll be honest with you, one of the criticisms we've we've had, and I would say it's more of a misconception, is if someone is making a microcurrent-only device, how could you make it as good as theirs when it's just one attachment, many as part of the same device?
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: And the reality is we looked at therapies as six devices, all built into one.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: So we really went through the engineering and the product development cycle of making six products all built into one.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: So the specs of the microcurrents are industry, industry leading, effectiveness is there.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: And there is no reason for someone to think that just because it's not a standalone device, it doesn't work as well as any other microcurrent device on the market.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: I I mean, I I didn't think that for a second.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: That's interesting feedback though.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Because I mean, I think that's an easy answer, though.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, if if you have the base of what you're working with is the true electrical component and you're adding something on top of it, I mean, it's delivering the same, you know, it's delivering the required amount of electricity to the component that it's attached to.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: So that's not, I think that's more of an engineering question.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: So I mean it's yeah.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think it's a good thing.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: So we built all of the electronics power, the screen, the firmware into the core device, but all of the microcurrent technology is in the attachment.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: And I don't want to make it sound easy.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: It was actually challenging to get that kind of technology in a small space, but that's what true innovation is.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, it would have been a bigger product.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Uh, but it is as effective as to to meet the needs that we were looking for in a microcurrent device.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's actually more effective than some of the microcurrent devices I've tried.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: Like, honest to God.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Like I I've used it, I use it very regularly, actually, and I love the results.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, you immediately see the lifted effect.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: You don't have the really annoying zapping that you do in some of the other devices, you know, not naming any names, but it's it's very nice, it's very smooth, you know.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: That's the best way I can describe it as a consumer.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Like it does its job.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: It's really easy to maneuver, especially, you know, along the jawline, you know, the eyebrow area, the forehead area.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: Like it really targets, you know, it's very easy to target specific areas of our face.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: And I actually really enjoy that the sizing is the way it is, you know.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: And that's a big question I have for you is the size.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Component, you know, of all of this, because like you said, it's very hard to engineer something in a small space, but you've really created something magical here that is in a small space, but it's very it's it's packed with all of the good stuff, right?
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: All the powers behind it.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: So, how was that?
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Were there any challenges from the engineering standpoint when you were kind of going through the iterations of the therapace?
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think therapace, the the first part was how do you design something that is very easy to use for the consumer?
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: It's ergonomic.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: How do you change the attachments in an easy way?
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Traditionally, they they screw on or screw off, and that could be cumbersome for the consumer.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: So we really thought about this magnetic attachment system.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: So you can easily just connect it through this unique magnetic system.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, the challenge with that was how do you make sure that it does not fall off when you're using the microcurrent, the magnet does not disconnect and have the attachment fall off.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: So that was quite a challenge.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: We talked about the electronics.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: How do you have the core device be able to support multiple attachments, both from a firmware standpoint and the messaging on the screen?
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: So consumers know how to use it and what the control system looks like.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: We have a really, really strong mechanical, electrical, software engineering teams.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: They all work together, but I think it all starts with the consumer.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: We spend a lot of time testing the product.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it's internal folks that are our beauty experts.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's external folks, give them different products and devices, not saying which one is which.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: What do you like about each one?
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: How does it fit?
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: How do you hold it?
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: What do the ergonomics look like?
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: We get that feedback and we go through several iterations to make sure that all of our products are comfortable and easy to use.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: And especially on the face, thinking about waterproofing issues, thinking about how do you clean it, how does it not get dirty?
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of things that go into it.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: And usually if you're not noticing it or not thinking about it, that means that we've done a great job of thinking about it and avoided the problem.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would say so.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: That's that's very true.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think that, you know, that's the that's the big selling point for me, right?
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Is that I don't have to think about like it's all of the things in a very seamless way.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: And I I feel like even when you're going through one attachment to the next, it's it doesn't feel like you're transitioning a lot in terms of what you have to do to make it work for your skin.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's really just about, okay, I'm ready for my next therapy.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: I'm ready for the next step and the next step.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: And it's very easy.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: And I think that, you know, as a consumer, when I look at therapies, I really see almost like a not just like a at home, okay, cool, this is an OTC product and I can use it at home.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: It's like a full spa experience, you know.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: If you go to your aesthetician or you go to a professional, you're gonna get these multiple treatments.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: And I feel like when you're using it, it becomes like this mini spa experience you're having, you know, at home.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: And so absolutely beautiful, absolutely brilliant.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Um, I want to actually take a minute to uh do a deep dive into the deep muscle stimulation because I know with the Theragun, that's where you know you guys started, right?
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Was this muscle stimulation piece?
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: And then how was that bringing that over in a much smaller component now, you know, that we're using with the therapies?
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Like, how was that in terms of like, you know, figuring out the right pressure and all of that?
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: So the Theragun, the challenge was how do we get a motor that is strong enough that can move 40 times per second and move 16 millimeters?
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: And so it's literally hitting your skin 40 times per second.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: And how do you make that motor powerful enough so that when you're really pushing it into a large muscle like your glutes, your quads, your hamstrings, it doesn't stop?
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: With the therapist is the exact opposite problem.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: You can't have that big of a device, that strong of a motor.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: So we had to test different amplitudes.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: And the challenge is also the masseter, which is our second strongest muscle in the body, and that helps us chew and survive.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Mother Nature knew what she was doing, needs a stronger device.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Yet if you want to do your temples or your forehead, well, there's not a lot of muscle there.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: So, how do you make sure that it's now not too harsh and it's it's softer?
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: So we really tested a number of amplitudes, both with our science team, Dr.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: Jason, and then took that and did consumer testing to get feedback from everyday consumers who are not thinking about it from a scientific standpoint, but just how does it feel?
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Does it feel good?
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Did it relax the muscle?
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Does it, did it, did it work?
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: And did it relieve the tension?
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: So it's it's a multi-step process, and we define it at three millimeters, and that was a right proportion to the size of the muscle in the faces, but it took a lot of testing because we're doing something new, and you couldn't just take what the learnings were from Theragun and now apply to the face.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: It really was a brand new product.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, I think the control, like the the ease of control is what really is very interesting for me, you know, with this attachment, the facial contouring piece.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: Because I think a lot of times when we're looking at the face and the facial muscles, we have this, you know, for example, I'll reference gouacia, right?
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: So we do gouacia, and you know, there's a lot of great stuff out there about gasha.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: And if you're out there listening and you do this every day, great.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm glad it works for you.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: And but for me, it's never really worked.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: And I'll tell you why.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Because I never felt like it was targeting the insertion points of my muscles on the actual bony processes of my face.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: And that's where I feel like the this component that you have in the therapist is so unique because when we look at things like, for example, people go and get Botox, right?
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: For the to relax the muscle, and that's what's going to give you that effect that you're looking for the end, you know, no wrinkles anymore and all that, right?
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: But here's the the cool part that I find to be really interesting is that when you target the insertion points of these facial muscles and you really stimulate those areas, that's impacting the entire muscle in it, you know, in its entirety.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: So you're able to then relax based on that.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Like scientifically speaking, that's the thing.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: And that's what the that component does for me is I will use it in areas where I know the muscles attach.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: So right next to your, like right outside your ear, for example.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: You know, for anyone listening, if you're targeting that area and you kind of like leave it there for like a few seconds, you'll notice it kind of loosens up that whole jaw area.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: And it's very easy, you know.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: The the ease of like being able to maneuver it, to use it the way you want.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you really know what you're doing and you understand facial anatomy, this could become a very great tool, you know, for just daily use and actually doing something that if you do get Botox, if you get all of these injectables or whatever you're doing, it's a great adjunct to that because you're stimulating the muscles in a way that it's going to actually impact the entire muscle rather than just portions of your face.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: And so that's where I find it to be very fascinating and and very interesting that you know you use the like the use the pressures that you did and and the way that it actually attaches to the overall therapist.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: It's very cool.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and we designed a couple of different attachments.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: So there's a flat one that does more general massage.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: I use it exactly like you said.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: There's a cone attachment more pinpointed, and it's right along the jawbone where my masseter is, and that helps relax my jaw.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: And I think the beauty aspect of it is if the jawline is relaxed, it can also elongate the face.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: So I do it more for the therapeutic side of it, but there is a beauty benefit to it as well.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, there really is.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: And it just shows, you know, that's I think what blows me away about the Therapace Pro is that it actually is a device that when I use it, I see the results, you know, and there's a lot of stuff out there, and I'm not naming any names, but there's a lot of stuff out there where I use it and I don't know what the what the heck it did for my face.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: That's the honest truth.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: But as a consumer, I can tell you this is a device that I can use day in and day out, and I know what to expect because it actually works and it it gives me that power, you know, as a consumer, it gives me that leverage to where now I don't feel like I'm just wasting my money, you know, on another device and just it's not gonna deliver.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: So that's where it's just it's just the perfect.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: I feel like if you're new to devices or you don't really know where to start for anyone listening out there, this is a really great place to start and to stay because it's gonna give you so much for what for one, bang for your buck, but two, also because of what we talked about earlier, that really holistic approach to facial devices.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: Very cool.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: You know, when we started Steragun, yeah, the first customers were professional athletes.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: And professional athletes are most people think they're early adopters, but they're actually not.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: They have the routine, and they're not one to mess with that routine because they don't want anything to get in the way of the performance, which makes perfect sense.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: It's not worth the risk.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: So we had to spend a lot of time and effort educating them on the benefit of Theragun and the scientific evidence behind it.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: And so science and results efficacy has always been part of our DNA.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: And if you're if if we can get a professional athlete to trust us enough to use it as part of their recovery so that they can be doing their best, it says a lot about our company and our brand.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: We've applied the same approach to everything we do.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: And that is why, and it's a big part of our brand, and we have built up this trust with our consumers.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: So when we do come out with a product, and I think I got a lot of these comments just from people I know, and they said, you know, I'd heard of LED masks, it seems to be popular, but it seems so gimmicky.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: I don't like like if I use it once, does it really work?
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: I don't really see the results.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: But when you guys came out with it, because I trust you and I know that you are not going to come out with something that doesn't work, and you've got the science and engineering to back it up.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: And in the case of the LED mask, we actually had a clinical study to back it up.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: They they bought it and they said, I only bought it because it's therabody.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: And that's a big, big responsibility that we take very seriously.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: And we really appreciate the trust that consumers have in our product.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: And you're absolutely right.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: Both in wellness and I would say in beauty tech, there are a lot of gimmicky products, a lot of things that promise you the world.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: And there is no studies to back it up.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Some of them don't even have FDA compliance.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: Some of them don't have any real, there's nothing behind it to tell consumers that they should be shelling out their hard-earned money to try it and uh that it would work.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: And so we take that very seriously, and all of our products really do have a lot of science and studies behind it to make sure it's validated and consumers don't lose that trust in us.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: And I feel like that's the way it should be.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: You know, like I love that you're setting that industry standard and I love that you're, you know, kind of going by that because unfortunately, you know, as we all know, OTC products, especially in the realm of like beauty, wellness, they're very, you know, some of them are really great products, but it's it becomes a question of where do we draw a line between what is actually valid based on science and you know, like you had mentioned with you guys, you've done clinical trials, you know, you've done the homework and the the research behind it.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: Where is that line?
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: So I think a lot of times consumers get lost in this plethora of options.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: But a really great way to differentiate, you know, the brands that are kind of, you know, science forward thinking brands is they're gonna have data.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: You know, there's gonna be real data out there.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: And I really encourage everyone listening, if you guys are in the market for anything that has to do with, you know, biotech or anything related to engineering, you know, anything that has to do with science and, you know, just STEM fields, right, that are being applied to OTC options, please ask for that.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: You know, look for that in a brand.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: Did they do clinical studies?
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: Did they do they have data just around this?
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: So I love that you you guys came at this with a very, you know, science-forward approach that's really, really important to me as a consumer.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: And I know for a lot of people it is.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: So I applaud you for that.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: I I also encourage consumers, and I think we have to hold companies accountable.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: I encourage consumers to be asking those tough questions, seek the studies, seek the information.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: We don't hide it.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: It's really right on the page on the website where Therapace is, uh where the LED mask is.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: We show the clinical studies.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: We refer to scientific studies, some of them are from the National Institute of Health that talk about the technologies that we use.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: So it's really backed by very credible industry sources.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: And I think it it's very, very important that consumers ask for that because it's too easy to just make a product and then let the glitzy marketing or the TikTok ad sell the product and promise you the world.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: And I think consumers are getting smarter.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: They know that things can be photoshopped, so the before and after pictures are no longer enough.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Uh it matters.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: And the studies are are important to back it up.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: I completely agree.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: And, you know, one thing I want to actually ask you, and this is kind of like a broader question, you know, it's just your opinion.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: Where do you think we're headed, you know, as an industry?
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: Like looking at the tech side and then combining that with, you know, what we've always known beauty to be.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, I feel like beauty has just been like topical products for so long, and we're finally now emerging in this biotech space.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: Like, how do you think this is gonna, you know, change the industry?
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Or what what are your thoughts around that?
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: That's a great question.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: We it's funny, when we launched Derek Gun in 2016, recovery was really, really at the beginning stages.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: Very few people thought about recovery, very few people talked about recovery.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: I believe that beauty tech, even though there have been some devices around for 10 years or so, but I think as an industry, as a way of consumers looking at technology to solve beauty, skin, and facial health problems, we're really in the same stages as we were back in 2016 in recovery.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: We're really just at the beginning.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: There are so many great technologies.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: I think, you know, of course, LED is now a little bit more well known and it's being adopted by consumers.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of research being done around different LED lights and the benefits and efficacy around it.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: The LE, the FDA process here in the US is very slow.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: So I would say sometimes the US is behind in some of these technologies than the rest of the world.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: We believe that there is huge improvement opportunities in cold.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: And then we're looking at a lot of other technologies, whether it's laser, ultrasound, there's other types of technologies that we believe can help consumers.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: And it is going, like you said, biotech.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: It's much more like a biotech type uh biotechnology where it's going below the skin and we're talking about the epidermis, and it is really going deeper into talking about capillaries and muscles, just not the skin.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: And I think that over the next five years, people will have access to a lot more technology that may have only been available in a clinical setting.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: And I think we're we're hoping and and focusing on driving that innovation.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: And I I completely agree with you.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: I think that this is it, it's really like, you know, it's like the next frontier kind of thing, you know, for lack of a better term.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: It's it's really about this next level of just taking care of yourself.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I'm glad you brought up like the different layers.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think we are so focused.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, I Ben honestly I've very early in skincare anarchy, I hosted a couple of, you know, colleagues and and derms and and we talked about how really it's that, you know, top layer of skin that matters.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: And I was like, no, I don't believe that at all.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: You know, I think it's so much more than that, and I think it's it's much deeper than that.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: And we have to have this understanding of, like you said, like the blood vessels, the dermis, the, you know, the collagen tissue, all of this stuff that is comprising what we see as the structure of our face and our body.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: We have to understand that, you know, holistically.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: And we need to have our therapies targeted towards all of it at once.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Like, like literally stimulating things in one go rather than just pieces.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: And I think that's where I don't know.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: I just think that that's the next step.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: And you guys are just doing it beautifully.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: I love the options that you've you've created in this industry and what you're doing and what this is going to mean for any future brands that pop up, you know, because it's really like paving a road to something very new and very much more advanced than where we are right now.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: So I mean, truly hats off to in your to you and your whole team because I'm such a fan of of what you're creating here.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: And you know, it's honestly very flattering when an industry expert such as yourself is recognizing what we're doing and the quality of our product and the efficacy of it.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: So these calls and these conversations are very fun for us.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: And I want to ask you as a round out question, are there any exciting announcements or any things on the horizon that you could share with us with the brand?
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: You know, I I don't think we're ready for an announcement.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: I think, as I mentioned, we're looking at a lot of different technologies.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: Some of them are a few years out because of the research we need to do to validate it and then the FDA compliance process.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: But I'm really excited because there are technologies that we're seeing that have proven to show that there's efficacy behind it.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: The question is, how do we bring that to consumers in an affordable way?
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: Some of them are in a clinical setting or devices that are very large, meant for a doctor's office, but they the efficacy is there.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: And so we're thinking through that.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: In the near term, I think there's a lot of opportunities around LAD, around microcurrent, around cold that we are thinking through that will continue to benefit consumers.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: And I think the technology is evolving.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: But the way we think about it is we're looking to really lead this space and really drive the beauty tech innovation.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: Our focus is on using all of our engineering expertise, the knowledge of our science team that knows the body, and also the education team to help consumers understand the efficacy of it, how to use these technologies.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Because I think sometimes these technologies can be very complicated.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: So when do I use what?
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: And hoping to bring all that together to bring a holistic solution to consumers.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm really excited for whatever is next.
