- 0:07The fifth annual Major League Baseball All-Star game took place at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, July 7, 1937.
- 0:15The National League was sending the Cardinals' Dizzy Dean to the mound. Dean led the league in wins for two consecutive seasons, with 30 wins in 1934 and 28 in 1935, before dipping to 24 wins in 1936.
- 0:27He entered the All-Star break with a 12-7 record. He was set to face the Yankees' Lefty Gomez, who entered this game with a 14-5 record.
- 0:35The National League was managed by Giants manager Bill Terry. The Giants had won the pennant in 1936 with Terry as their manager and first baseman.
- 0:43Terry retired as a player after five seasons as player-manager and began 1937 with his entire focus on managing.
- 0:50The American League was managed by Joe McCarthy, who led the Yankees to 102-win season and the eventual World Series title over the Giants in 1936.
- 0:58This audio recording is from the Mutual Radio broadcast featuring announcers Bob Elson and Tony Wakeman.
- 1:04Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. This is Tony Wakeman speaking from Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C.
- 1:10Once more, baseball's greatest artists are assembled before us in the game in which in the short space of five years has become recognized as the outstanding contest of the National Fast Time.
- 1:22No better testimonial to the success of this All-Star game can be offered than the enthusiasm of fans gathered here in Griffith Stadium this afternoon.
- 1:31To them, the game is the culmination of a real fan's dream.
- 1:35Five years ago, we were suggesting that the hardest hitters, the swiftest pitchers, and the nimblest defensive men in the American League
- 1:42to be matched against their rivals in the National on the same diamond on the same day would have been regarded as fantastic.
- 1:49Yet today each of those stars is out there in the field and thanks to the officials of both leagues, the players and the fans.
- 1:57The United States Army fans at the present time is occupying the space between the third base and the first base line and they are facing the President's Dock, the President of the United States.
- 2:10We feel will arrive very shortly. The huge photographers have set up their cameras directly in front of the box, which is to the left of the Dock,
- 2:20the Dock that occupied by the Washington Nationals when they are playing here at Griffith Stadium.
- 2:27This afternoon, the representatives of the National League are occupying the post directly below it and incidentally, I want to explain the position which Bob Elston of WGN in Chicago and I occupy at the present time.
- 2:41On the second tier, directly above the dugout of the visiting team here at the Griffith Stadium. This afternoon, that same dugout is being occupied by the representatives of the National League
- 2:54and the American Leaguers are using the dugout of the Griff here at the stadium.
- 3:00Al Shack, a funny man of baseball, naturally is here this afternoon and any number of celebrities gathered here, Senators Tongasson and so forth, and we approximate the crowd at about 35,000.
- 3:15A marvelous crowd. The stadium is packed to capacity.
- 3:21The United States Army fans now, as one heavy member turns in the direction of the driveway, which is to the left of the dugout, the news camera men are now setting up, waiting,
- 3:37and Judge Landis, High Commissioner of Baseball, and Dave Ruth are directing the ball to the right.
- 3:44Dave came into the ballpark this afternoon, sat down, pulled his shirt off, and then the autographed stickers came up, but the fave was here to enjoy a good game of baseball,
- 3:55and that's just what he's going to do.
- 3:57And now Judge Landis and Dave Ruth, having a picture taken by the news photographers and the boys of the press.
- 4:03The grand day here at Griffith Stadium, I'm in Washington, D.C. The temperature, about 92, we're right out in the sun, and it's a typical baseball day.
- 4:15Just a few moments ago, or I should say about 10 minutes ago, there were possibly 5,000 fans down on the field speaking autographs.
- 4:24Here's Dizzy Dean directly to the north, warming up for the national league.
- 4:28And Dizzy Dean, you know, came into Washington last night by plane, we understand, with Dizzy.
- 4:35Had a plane ride from Chicago to St. Louis and then up here to Washington, and he did not arrange for a two-ticket, so you can imagine what he had to get through.
- 4:45He started at 8 o'clock in the morning, and he didn't arrive in Washington until 8 minutes past 9.
- 4:52And well at first, we didn't know whether Dizzy was really going to appear in this All-Star game, but here he is, and at Brennan's batting average, for things right on time.
- 5:03We want to mention the fact that each player wears his own uniform.
- 5:07The national leaguers are wearing their uniform, which they don't when away from home.
- 5:14And the American leaguers, I believe, are wearing their own uniform.
- 5:18So we have a delamination of colors directly below us, every color imaginable.
- 5:23Bill Perry is now talking to us, and I believe they're discussing grounds rules.
- 5:31There are no grounds rules this afternoon, that is, we don't have a crowd out in the field, no rules.
- 5:37And Frankie Perch is down there talking things over with Perry.
- 5:42And we're waiting for the president's car to pull into Griffith Stadium, toss out the first ball, and then it'll be play ball.
- 5:53Say Bruce, greeted with Mr. Bruce, the lower San Juan right, is now ready to throw for the autographed creatures, and he will want to enjoy this ball game.
- 6:05Dizzy Dean, last night, at a marvelous time, there are 32,000 that voiced out to 35,000 here in the District of Columbia for their first national jamboree,
- 6:16and Dizzy had about 10,000 around him wanting his autograph.
- 6:21And we understand that right after this game is over, Dizzy will make an appearance at the camp, probably looking the thing over and talking to some of the boys.
- 6:31Now the photographers come over to take Dizzy's picture.
- 6:35While he's warming up, and Frankie Perch, Dr. Medlund, tossing a ball around directly below us, the United States Army fans,
- 6:44approximately 75 or 100 members in the fans, standing at attention.
- 6:49They have been for the past 15 minutes or so.
- 6:53And on a guard of shouts, about 15 or 20 shouts, and then the President of the United States, in a large, black open fire, comes in,
- 7:07removes his hat, and he's waving to the fans here, of course, the President of the United States, his baseball fan number one.
- 7:15And he gazes up into the fans, waves, and then waves over towards the ball players. They're lined up from first to home.
- 7:24They've all removed their hats.
- 7:26And the Boy Scouts move past the President's box.
- 7:34The President will leave the car.
- 7:38Son James is with him and his military aide.
- 7:45They're getting out of the car now, and then he'll take his position in the box, then toss out that ball, and we'll be off.
- 7:55I again want to remind you that the play-by-play description of this game will be given by Bob Elson of WGN in Chicago.
- 8:05They're still snapping away with their cameras over there on the far side of the field, the newsreel cameras grinding away,
- 8:13and the President will probably toss out the ball.
- 8:16The Vice President's honor has now joined the party.
- 8:20The Scouts are leaving the box.
- 8:24They had their pictures taken with the President of the United States.
- 8:28Now they're leaving.
- 8:31And the baseball players are still standing at attention.
- 8:44I believe Bob Elson has the official lineup for this afternoon and the batting orders.
- 8:49We'll have it given to you very shortly.
- 8:52You'll notice that Bucky Newcomers again down there snapping with his camera.
- 9:04They're taking pictures of the President and the Scouts, but with him,
- 9:08they march out through the flagpole and the raising of the flag.
- 9:23They're still taking pictures of the President and the Batting Orders,
- 10:08And now ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to turn the microphone over to Bob Elston.
- 10:23Thank you very much Tony Wakeman.
- 10:26Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen.
- 10:28I have been seated right alongside Tony Wakeman here while I'm giving you a very colorful
- 10:32description of all that's happened out here.
- 10:34The free game festivities through one of the outstanding sporting events in America,
- 10:38and that is the All-Star Game.
- 10:40Tony told you about the crowd, about the President's arrival, and about the celebrities down here.
- 10:45I'm going to tell you something about the lineup and also something about this ballpark
- 10:48in about two minutes so that we have, so that we feel that you have a good picture of our
- 10:53position out here in Washington right above third base to see this All-Star Game.
- 10:57Right first is the official batting order lineup and there are several surprises.
- 11:01For the National League, Paul Wehner is trained center field and leading off, or right field
- 11:07and leading off.
- 11:08And you must admit that a National League ball club that can have Paul Wehner as leadoff
- 11:13man is a pretty husky ball club.
- 11:16Herman at second base, Chicago, Warren at third, Medwick in left, Demery in center,
- 11:21Meis at first, Harkness at catcher, Bartell at short, and Dean is going to do the pitching.
- 11:27For the American League, it's Ross at third, Geringer second, DiMaggio in right field,
- 11:32Gary at first, Aberlyn in center, Krohlen at short, Dickey the catcher, and Sam West
- 11:39of St. Louis is going to start and play for Foe Bell and is going to play in left field
- 11:43with Vernon Gomez, the long, slender left-hander, picking Paul Wehner at American League.
- 11:49The ballplayers are still grouped around in the semicircle here to our right between the
- 11:52plate and first base in a salute to the president who has yet not thrown out the first ball.
- 11:59He's going to throw it out and then I imagine there will be a mad scramble among the players
- 12:02to get that base ball as a trophy.
- 12:04Now a picture of this ballpark.
- 12:06Our position here, as we told you and as Tony told you, is right above third base.
- 12:10We're looking directly into right field.
- 12:11Now there is no stand in right field.
- 12:13It's a very high fence.
- 12:15I imagine that fence is about 100 feet in the air.
- 12:18There's a stand running along the first base line out of the playing field, a double deck
- 12:23grandstand that circles around behind the plate.
- 12:25We're in a portion of it here.
- 12:27As we go down the left field line, we're right above third base.
- 12:29And then we go down to the very end of the left field line where that line is met by
- 12:33a feature.
- 12:34Now this feature is a single deck stand without a roof.
- 12:37It extends from the left field corner all the way out into center field.
- 12:41Now just a few words about these ground rules here today so that you have an accurate picture
- 12:46of just what happened.
- 12:47Now there's a very high fence, as we told you in right field, that extends all the way
- 12:51into dead center field.
- 12:52And there there's an amplifier on top of the fence and a short flagpole with a flag on
- 12:56top.
- 12:57Now any ball that hits that fence in right field is a ball in play.
- 13:00If a ball hits those amplifiers and goes inside and stays in at the home run, if a ball goes
- 13:05into the amplifiers and rolls out, it's in play.
- 13:07If a ball goes any place, into the left field stand, stays in or bounces out, it's a home
- 13:13run.
- 13:14Now we're going to be able to scramble for the ball here as the president throws the
- 13:17first ball.
- 13:18He has his right hand extended.
- 13:19Watch it now.
- 13:20Now try to pick out the man that gets it for you.
- 13:21All the players are grouped around.
- 13:22Let's see who gets it now, whether it's an American League or a National League player.
- 13:23His arm is cloyed.
- 13:24He's ready to throw it.
- 13:25The photographers are banging away funny with their cameras.
- 13:26There it goes, right into the center.
- 13:27It's caught by an American leaguer.
- 13:28They're still on the ground scrambling for it.
- 13:29The ball was caught by Luke Searle on the wide shot.
- 13:30He's got a very high fence.
- 13:31He's got a very high fence.
- 13:32He's got a very high fence.
- 13:33He's got a very high fence.
- 13:34He's got a very high fence.
- 13:35He's got a very high fence.
- 13:44Luke Searle, the Chicago wide shot, caught the ball.
- 13:49It was thrown by President Roosevelt.
- 13:52Searle is going into the American League dugout, which is over there back up first with his
- 13:55trophy.
- 13:56You can bet that he's a very happy young man.
- 13:57The umpires today, the American League umpire, will start behind to play Joe McGahn.
- 13:58That first base will be Bay Panam.
- 13:59That second base will be Quinn of the American League.
- 14:05And the third base will be George Parr of the National League.
- 14:10Here are all the National League players going back to their dugout right down here below
- 14:15us.
- 14:16A picture with all these different uniforms, different uniforms with gray and green, the
- 14:17Cardinals with gray and red, New York with gray and dark blue, the Cubs with gray and
- 14:18blue and red.
- 14:19There's Collins over there now.
- 14:20The Cubs first.
- 14:21The Cubs second.
- 14:22The Cubs third.
- 14:23The Cubs fourth.
- 14:24The Cubs fifth.
- 14:25The Cubs sixth.
- 14:26The Cubs sixth.
- 14:27students, the Cardinals with gray and green.
- 14:29in his uniform and he's a camera fan and he's been getting some pictures too.
- 14:33And we're all ready for the All-Star Game of 1937.
- 14:36Running over now, before the umpires come out, what's happened in the previous games?
- 14:40In 1933, the American League won at Chicago 4-2.
- 14:43In 1934, the American League won at New York 9-4.
- 14:48In 1935, the American League won at Cleveland 4-1.
- 14:51We had the pleasure of broadcasting that game from the big municipal stadium
- 14:54there on the lakefront at Cleveland that year.
- 14:57Last year in 1936, the National League won by a score of 4-3 at Boston.
- 15:02And what's going to happen in the year 1937 here in Washington?
- 15:05We'll know more about that just about two hours from now.
- 15:08Here the umpires coming out.
- 15:10Judge Lamb is seated right down here below us.
- 15:13Here the managers coming out, Joe McCaffee and Bill Terry.
- 15:16McCaffee is manager by virtue of his winning American League tenant last year.
- 15:20Terry is manager by virtue of his winning the National League tenant last year.
- 15:23My associate here, Tony Wakeman and I, had the pleasure of broadcasting the World Series last year from New York.
- 15:29We're all set now for the big game of the year, the All-Star Game of 1937 here in Washington.
- 15:35And it's an ideal day.
- 15:36They couldn't have picked out a more glorious day for a glorious ballgame than we have here today.
- 15:40Everybody is seated around here in the stands above and below us with their coats off.
- 15:44And everybody, of course, is expected now, waiting for this grand baseball classic to get underway.
- 15:50Archie Ward, the Gipsy Sports Editor of the Chicago Tribune, who was the originator of the first All-Star Game in 1933,
- 15:58said a word of welcome through the public address system to the fans here.
- 16:02He thanked Commissioner Landis.
- 16:04He thanked President Ford Frick and President Will Harridge of the American League for their wholehearted cooperation in making this series of All-Star Games possible.
- 16:12And Archie said in his closing words that he hopes that this series of All-Star Games between the stars of the National League and the stars of the American League will last forever.
- 16:20And I'm sure that that same feeling and that same sentiment is echoed by the baseball fans of the nation.
- 16:26We have a grand day here today.
- 16:28This will make this the fifth All-Star Game.
- 16:30The series stands three games to one in favor of the American League.
- 16:36Now the umpires are down here around the home plate with the managers McCoffee and Terry and with their assistants.
- 16:46Burke and Fletcher for the American League and for the National League, Frankie Frisch and Jeff Haynes.
- 16:54Frankie Frisch and Charlie Dressen and Jeff Haynes.
- 16:58Jesse Haynes, who is the oldest player in the National League in point of service, was selected as honorary coach.
- 17:05The active coaches will be at first and third, Frankie Frisch, the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Charlie Dressen, the manager of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 17:12For the American League it will be Joe McCoffee's two assistants, Audie Fletcher and Jimmy Burke.
- 17:19Del Baker, the acting manager of the Detroit Tigers, was previously selected, but because of illness and because of the handicap that Detroit is trying to overcome now,
- 17:28because of the absence of their manager Mickey Cochran, one of the most brilliant players in baseball history, asked to be excused and Burke was selected in his fifth.
- 17:38This is a huge fence in right field. You know, Lou Gehrig hit, I believe it was 46 home runs last year and did not hit a home run in Washington.
- 17:47That gives you an idea of this ballpark, just the size of it. It is not very large as far as the stand and the seating capacity is concerned.
- 17:54As Tony said, they have 75,000 people in here. They could have put 60,000 people in this ballpark today because Washington is start mad as far as this All-Star game is concerned.
- 18:03There's all sorts of enthusiasm and excitement about it, but the seating capacity of the stand is around 35,000 people.
- 18:09There are no stands in right field. There is a stand in left field which extends all the way from the left field line to the center field wall.
- 18:18I'm going to repeat the batting order for those of you who might be just tuning in. All-winner of Pittsburgh is in right field, Herman of the Cubs second,
- 18:28Orland of the Pirates third, Medwick of St. Louis left, Demarie of the Cubs in center, Mize of St. Louis at first,
- 18:34Harknett of the Cubs catching, Bartell of New York at short, and Dean with 12-7 as the pitcher.
- 18:40For the American League it's Ralph at third, Geringer second, DiMaggio in right, Gehrig at first,
- 18:45Averill in center, Polan at short, Dickey the catcher, West in left field, and Gomez the pitcher.
- 18:51And now before the ballgame gets underway, we're going to pause very briefly for station identification.
- 18:56You're listening to the broadcast of the All-Star game. The preliminaries here before the ballgame gets underway from Crispus Stadium here,
- 19:04the nation's capital in Washington, D.C. This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 19:09This is WGM, a voice for the people of Chicago.
- 19:15Well, we're just waiting now for the umpires to signal play ball.
- 19:19It sits back very comfortably now, ladies and gentlemen, and listen to the broadcast of the All-Star game here from Washington.
- 19:27The umpires have gone around the place. There the American League players are going onto the field.
- 19:33Of course, the home team, the home uniform of every team is white, and that's why the American League players,
- 19:40even though they all have different uniforms in some respects, are all in white.
- 19:44That is the general trend of their color of their uniforms.
- 19:47The National League, because they're wearing visiting uniforms, are all in different colors.
- 19:53There's Frisch going down to first, Coach at first, and here's Charlie Dressen coming over to Coach at third,
- 19:58and here's the leadoff man, last year's National League batting champion Paul Wehner leading off.
- 20:05That's one for the book. These clubs are so well stocked for hitters with so much punch on each side.
- 20:13And here we have a man who's a natural three-, four-, or five-spot hitter on the lineup batting his leadoff man, Paul Wehner,
- 20:21with an average of 385. I don't think, Tony, you'll ever see that again, a 400-hitter leading off.
- 20:31Well, it should be a grand game. It's a grand day, and I'm sure that you'll join us in echoing the sentiment,
- 20:37may the best team win. Here's Gomez. Paul Wehner out there in the mound getting ready to pitch to Paul Wehner.
- 20:45All set. Here's Rolfe of the Yankees down below at the third. There's Joe Cohen at short.
- 20:49There's Charlie Geringer, one of the greatest players of all time at second.
- 20:52And there's Larapin Luke-Gerrig, one of the outstanding players of all time at first.
- 20:56In right field is Joe DiMaggio. In center field is Earl A. Burrell. And in left field is Sam West.
- 21:05Bill Dickey of the Yankees is the catcher, and Gomez is the pitcher. We're all set now for the first ball to be pitched.
- 21:10McGowan is the umpire, the American league back of the plate. And here's Paul Wehner up the left-hander hitter.
- 21:16Now we're getting all set. Gomez has his sign. He's ready now to wind up in the first pitch.
- 21:20It's a fastball that's a little bit outside of the knee for the ball.
- 21:23The umpire is moving the photographers away from the top of the plate, and the umpire says no.
- 21:30This has been a field day for the boys with Babe Ruth, Judge Landis, the president, Will Harris,
- 21:35Port Brick, and celebrities from every walk of life out here.
- 21:38The boys have had a great day clicking the old shutters of their cameras.
- 21:43The first pitch of the ball game is a ball. Paul Wehner is up.
- 21:48Gomez is getting his sign again. Here's the next pitch.
- 21:51It's a strike. It's shoulder high right over the plate, and the counter's one and one on the hitter.
- 21:55Nobody on, nobody off. The game is just getting underway. The national league is back first.
- 22:00Gomez gets his sign. Here's the next pitch. It's a fastball inside, closest to the knee for the ball,
- 22:05and the counter's two and one on the hitter.
- 22:09The American league puffs it up out there on the infield. There's Charlie Carringer rubbing his glove.
- 22:13Gomez bends halfway over, getting that windup set. Here he is, the pitch.
- 22:16It's a ground ball to Rolf. He has it. There goes the ball across the infield.
- 22:19He's out on an easy play. Rolf to Gary. Paul Wehner with an easy up. Rolf to Gary.
- 22:25Now the American league boys play it around. Polen has it.
- 22:28Carringer has it. Gary has it. Walks over to the pitcher and tosses the ball to him underhanded.
- 22:34The right-hander to come up is Billy Herman with the cup, batting.352.
- 22:41Right-handed hitter. This is Billy Herman's first day, by the way.
- 22:47Now Gomez gets his sign. Here's the pitch to Bill. It's a fastball over his head for the ball.
- 22:51Ball one. Nobody on and one off. Ball game is in the first half of the first inning.
- 22:58Billy Herman stands far back in the batter's box. Gomez is getting his sign.
- 23:02It's a fastball. He hits a high-top foul. Back of the plate. Dickie's back.
- 23:06He's right under it and should get it. He's waiting. He has it.
- 23:08Over second out. Billy Herman followed off to Dickie. About 20 feet behind the plate and right in line with the plate.
- 23:15He didn't have to move to his right or to his left. He just had to go back and he went back about 20 feet.
- 23:2020 or 25 feet behind the plate. It was an easy, it's kind of an off.
- 23:25Next man to come up is Archie Vaughan. He's batting.360.
- 23:30He's playing third base today. His natural position is short.
- 23:33He's a left-handed batter and he stands way back in the far corner of the batter's box, far away from the plate.
- 23:41Now Gomez is getting his sign. Here's the wind up on the pitch.
- 23:44It's a fastball and he hits a fly ball into the right center fielder.
- 23:46He's stopping for a hit. It's a single into right center field.
- 23:50Averyll gets the ball back and being field fast.
- 23:53And it was the first hit of the ball game, a single into right center field.
- 23:57It's a fly ball, not very high, and it drops into short right center.
- 24:00Averyll took the ball in the second bounce and shot it back in to Garenger at second.
- 24:05Here's Medwick. He's batting.404.
- 24:10Medwick of St. Louis, a right-handed Earth.
- 24:12Number seven and red on the back of his way uniform.
- 24:15The first pitch is too low and outside a fastball.
- 24:18There's a man on first for the national league. There's two up.
- 24:20The game is in the first half of the first inning. Gomez is pitching against Dean.
- 24:25Now Burnham gets his time again. He's all set to hit the pitch.
- 24:27Medwick looks at the fastball inside.
- 24:29Post, knee-high, a ball. Ball two.
- 24:34Got it on first base. Archie Burnham has a short lead off.
- 24:37A catcher for the American league is Phil Dickey and he has a great throwing arm.
- 24:40Here's the next pitch. Medwick hits the bounding ball off of the shortstop.
- 24:43Over to second base. Out.
- 24:45Burnham to Garenger. Forth spawn going down to second base.
- 24:48And it retires inside. All right, Tony.
- 24:51The first man up for the national league is Paul Reiner without Ross to Garenger.
- 24:55And then Herman filed out to Dickey.
- 24:57And Burnham got the first hit of the 1937 All-Star Ball Game,
- 25:02which is being played here at Griffith Stadium.
- 25:05And of course, Medwick went out forcing Archie Burnham,
- 25:09or rather Archie Burnham, out. He was forced out second.
- 25:12And now, having some sort of discussion down here in the field,
- 25:19Desi Dean goes out to the mound. He gets a hand, a grand hand.
- 25:24I would like to mention at this time that tonight from 8.30 to 8.45 p.m.
- 25:29Eastern Standard Time, the Mutual Broadcasting Network will make a special pick-up
- 25:34to Faye G.M.B. Honolulu, during which they will give a reconsistence creation
- 25:41and explain the activities to date which are being exercised in the search for Amelia Earhart
- 25:47and her navigator Numa. Now that time is 8.30 to 8.45.
- 25:53And now we're going into the last half of the first inning and back to Bob Elk.

- 26:26Artie Fletcher is coaching over at first. Now Dean is ready to pitch to Raul.
- 26:30Here's the first one. It's a fastball. It's too long.
- 26:32Horan is on a fast one. You can hear that pop in the glove all the way up here.
- 26:36We have a great spot to see the game. You're right on the inside feet.
- 26:40Right above third base here for the All-Star Game in Washington.
- 26:43Here's the next pitch. It's a fastball. He attempted to bounce the ball and
- 26:46popped it into the stands down here below it.
- 26:49There's a real scramble down here. You can imagine the average baseball and
- 26:53an average ballgame is a souvenir that people will tear their coats and
- 26:56everything else off and get at. Well, you can imagine what they'll do for
- 26:59the ballgame and the All-Star Game, for the baseball and the All-Star Game.
- 27:03Ross is starting with nobody on and nobody off. There's no score in the game.
- 27:06Here's the pitch. Ross took a straight fastball that was a little bit too close.
- 27:10At all. Dean didn't like that. He hollered at the umpire.
- 27:15Hillman's out there.
- 27:18Boy, did he get a reception out of it. There's a fellow too.
- 27:22There he is out there in the mound. He's got his motion again.

- 27:50Now Jizz is ready to pitch to him. He starts his windup. Here it is.

- 28:39Jizz takes his time out there again getting ready.
- 28:41Here's the next pitch to Charlie.
- 28:43He went in a low one that time.
- 28:46Charlie Garinger's won the occasion for that.
- 28:48The odds in the crowd of the pitch was very low.
- 28:52Charlie golfed those every once in a while, but he missed it.
- 28:54An account now in four one and strike two.
- 28:57Gabby Harknett shoots his right fist up into the air.
- 28:59Cutting the boys up.
- 29:01Dizzy Dean stands there in the mound getting his sign again from Harknett.
- 29:05Now he's starting to wind up. Here's the next pitch to Garinger.
- 29:08A very fast ball inside.
- 29:11Too close to Philly at the ball.
- 29:13Out is two and two. Dean and Harknett both foul about that one.
- 29:20The National League pitcher and the National League catcher.
- 29:22Dean and Harknett holler at the umpire about the call on that pitch.
- 29:28Garinger is batting.

- 30:27He's ready. Here's the next pitch.
- 30:29It's a little bit low on the outside.
- 30:30The ball makes it ball two.
- 30:33Next man to come up will be Lou Gehrig.
- 30:38Del Baker of Detroit.
- 30:40American League culture below us at third.
- 30:41Makes a lot of noise.
- 30:43Here comes the next pitch.
- 30:45DiMaggio, one miss.
- 30:47Shot-breaking curve and around his knee.
- 30:49And the counter's ball two and strike one.
- 30:52DiMaggio steps out of the batter's box, gets a lot of dirt on his hands,
- 30:55then gets up in there again with a white uniform with black swim stripes
- 30:59and a black number five in his back.
- 31:01Here's the next pitch.
- 31:02Fastball over the outside corner.

- 31:08Hartman steps out in front of the plate.
- 31:10Shoots that right-fist and hits up in the air again.
- 31:13Says something to do and then gets back in behind the hitter.
- 31:16It's a two and two count on Joe DiMaggio.
- 31:18Two out of nobody on in the last half of the first.
- 31:21Which is getting his sign again.
- 31:22There's the right-foot forward.
- 31:23He's most of me excited.
- 31:24Here it is.
- 31:25High inside the ball.
- 31:27Makes it three and two on Joe.
- 31:32Makes it getting his sign now.
- 31:33He's all ready.
- 31:36Here comes the next one.
- 31:38It's outside the ball.
- 31:40Ball four.
- 31:41DiMaggio gets the base on ball.
- 31:44Here's Lou Gehrig coming up.
- 31:49Gehrig is batting 372.
- 31:54The president has his hat off over there now.

- 33:41Gehrig with the roller fouled on the first baseline.
- 33:43Johnny Mize comes over the line, picks up the ball,
- 33:45and fires it back around the National League infield.
- 33:47It's the easiest kind of a roller, fouled about five feet outside the first baseline
- 33:51and rolled almost down to the back when Mize picked it up.
- 33:54National League boys leg the ball around,
- 33:57pep it up out there in the infield.
- 33:59The outfield is playing Gehrig a little bit around to the right.
- 34:04Dizzy Dean is getting his sign again.
- 34:06Man on first base has a pretty good leadoff.
- 34:08There he goes.

- 34:52Gehrig one hard and missed and his entire defense.
- 34:54All right, boys.
- 34:55Well, when Dizzy Dean steps out on the diamond,
- 34:58he always causes a lot of excite.
- 35:01He's going directly below us, running from ear to ear as he walks into the dugout.
- 35:06Ralph, the first man up, was out hermit to Mize.
- 35:09Gehrig just drove to Bartel for the second out and then DiMaggio walked.
- 35:14And Luke Gehrig came up and Dizzy Dean struck him out.
- 35:18So at the end of the first inning, the national league is nothing
- 35:22and the American league is nothing.
- 35:24One hit so far and that was by Archie Vaughn in the first inning.
- 35:30Going in now to the national tap off the set.

- 35:44Frank is the right-hander hitter.
- 35:46His batting average today is 323.
- 35:51He's a fine outfielder.
- 35:52He can travel out there in the outfield.
- 35:54He has a good arm, a fine hitter, and a real hustler.
- 35:59It's going to be very hard to pick between these two teams today.
- 36:05Two wonderful teams.
- 36:07Vernon Gomez is pitching for the Yankees.
- 36:09Dizzy Dean is pitching for the national league.
- 36:12Vernon Gomez for the American league and Dean for the national.
- 36:16Here's Frank Demery up starting the second inning and the first pitch is very low,
- 36:20almost into the dirt, ball one.
- 36:23Here's an airplane going overhead.
- 36:26Nobody on the bases and nobody out.
- 36:28The ball game is in the first half of the second.
- 36:30Gomez gets his time.
- 36:31Here's the next pitch.
- 36:32He hits a high short fly to center field.
- 36:34It should be caught.

- 36:36Earl Averell is looking up.
- 36:38He's caught it for the first out.
- 36:40Frank Demery sent a short fly ball into center field that was caught by Earl Averell.
- 36:44He throws the ball in behind second base to Coleman.
- 36:46Coleman flips it to Garenger.
- 36:47Garenger to Ross and then back to Gomez.
- 36:50The next man to come up is the first baseman of the St. Louis Cardinals,
- 36:54the National League first baseman, Johnny Mize.
- 36:59He's batting.363.

- 37:08Johnny Mize hit a high fly into short left field that was caught by Sam West,
- 37:14outfielder of the St. Louis Browns.
- 37:16You can see the reflection of the sun on his glasses.
- 37:18Now the next man to come up is Blacknet of the Chicago Cubs.
- 37:21The batting average is.384.
- 37:27Here we use the first pitch.
- 37:28The Heartnet is a strike.
- 37:29It's a fastball right down the middle.
- 37:33Two off to the National League.
- 37:34Nobody on the bases.
- 37:35There's no score.
- 37:36Gomez against Dean.
- 37:39Gomez is ready.
- 37:40Here's the pitch.
- 37:41He hits a bounding ball between first and second.
- 37:43Second baseman Garenger has it over to first.

- 37:51In the National half of the second inning, Demary slide out to Avril.
- 37:55Mize slide out to Sam West.
- 37:57And Gabby Heartnet went out Garenger to Lou Garik at first.
- 38:02We're going into the last half of the second inning.
- 38:04The score remains nothing, nothing.
- 38:07And we've had one hit so far in this ball game.
- 38:10The Archie Vaughan singles in the first inning for the National League.
- 38:16And as we told you, Dizzy was highly pleased after his appearance out there in the first inning.
- 38:24Came back into the dugout.
- 38:26Saw a smile.
- 38:30Still shooting them down.
- 38:31Gabby Heartnet now walking over and will turn the microphone back to Bob Elst.
- 38:38First round of bat for the American League in the last half of the second inning is Earl Avril.
- 38:43Earl is turning center field.
- 38:47His batting average is 313, the left hand of better.

- 39:18Avril has his sign.
- 39:20Here's the next pitch.
- 39:21He almost fell.
- 39:22Diz almost fell as he threw that one.
- 39:24It was a ball over his head.
- 39:25And he's laughing now.
- 39:27As he delivered the ball, he stumbled.
- 39:29And the pitch was very high.
- 39:31Went over the batter's head.
- 39:32And Earl Avril, the batter, gives him a bit.
- 39:35So the count is two and one now.
- 39:36Diz is getting ready again.
- 39:38Here's the next pitch.
- 39:39Low and inside the ball.

- 40:13Brings up Clarnon, the manager and shortstop of the Boston Red Sox.
- 40:17The right hand is in it.
- 40:23Clarnon's average today is 332.
- 40:26I'm going to repeat the batting averages today for each player just the first time up.
- 40:30So the two fans who are knocking the scorecard will know what each player is hitting, but just the first time up.
- 40:35And on first base now is nobody off to the American League.
- 40:38They're pulling up the pitch.

- 41:18Bill's batting 300.
- 41:23There's the first pitch. It's a fast one right around his knees for a called strike.

- 41:51Billy Herman went to his right and knocked the ball down behind second base.
- 41:54The ball rolled into short center field and it's a hit.
- 41:59He puts a man on first and a man on second for the American League and brings up the left fielder, Sam West.
- 42:09That's two hits this inning.

- 42:42He was holling at Demary to save him.
- 42:44Here's Gomez coming up with two up, two men on, last half of the second inning, and no score.
- 42:58So we've got three hits in the ball game so far, one by the National League and two by the American League.
- 43:03Hartnett and Mize talk to the pitcher, Dickey Beane.
- 43:10The National League is warming up Kyle Hubbell down the line here to our left.
- 43:14Kyle Hubbell will be the second National League pitcher.
- 43:18The first pitch to Gomez. Boy, that was a fast one. Right around his knee.

- 44:18Avril, the first man up, single out the right.

- 44:40Back to the ball game at Griffith Stadium, the nation's capital, Washington, D.C.
- 44:45We're going into the national half of the third inning.

- 1:19:32Now Bridges is getting his time.
- 1:19:34First pitch for Little Mal is two-man for the ball.
- 1:19:38He's been in a bad slump up until the last two weeks when he started to bang that ball in old-time op fashion.
- 1:19:44Pitch is a strike. It's right around his knees and the count is one and one.
- 1:19:49Otter's not hitting anywhere near 300 since his style is average.
- 1:19:54Bridges getting his time again. Here's the next pitch to Otter.
- 1:19:57Otter swings his hip one down the first baseline, a face-hip.
- 1:20:00Going far back into the right field corner.
- 1:20:02Here's Gabby Hightnett coming around the third and Otter fills up a second base.
- 1:20:05They double. High-drip ball down the first baseline between Garry and the line.
- 1:20:11It drips into, in short right field, just about a half a foot spare.
- 1:20:17Garry stuck out his left line to head the ball off and it went by him in the air about knee-high, but couldn't head it off.
- 1:20:23It rolled in right field and way down into the right field corner, back against the fence, and the Maggio fires it back into the infield.

- 1:20:40Now there's the man on second and the man on third. Here's Wehner up.
- 1:20:50He's been up tight today with Otter here. He bounced out the first time.
- 1:20:55He's got a fly ball to the left field the second time.
- 1:20:57Here's the pitch. It's in the dirt. A ball.
- 1:20:59Dickie has to go down on his knees and block that ball with his body to prevent a run from coming in.
- 1:21:09Man on second and man on third for the National League in the first half of the fifth.
- 1:21:15Tommy Bridges is getting his sign again from Bill Dickie.
- 1:21:19Here's the next pitch to Paul Wehner. He hits the fly ball into left field, left center field.
- 1:21:23Left fielder and the center fielder are both there, and the left fielder, West, called it.
- 1:21:27Here's Hocknett scoring and the score now is 5-2.
- 1:21:31Paul Wehner hit a fly ball to the left center field.
- 1:21:34The center fielder, April, and the left fielder, West, almost got mixed up on the ball in an Alphonse Gastamac.

- 1:21:53Here's Billy Herman coming up with the man on second. One run in. The score is 5-2 in favor of the American League.
- 1:21:59Two gone in the fifth inning.
- 1:22:02Herman has been up twice and has made one hit. Here's the pitch.
- 1:22:06It's a curve over the outside corner, way far for a called play.
- 1:22:12Donnie takes his glove off, looks back around the infield and the outfield to see what everybody can play.
- 1:22:16Gallagher first, Garendu at second, Coleman short, Rolf third, DiMaggio in right field, Abril in center field, West in left field, Bridgett fixing, and Vicki six.
- 1:22:26Two out on the man on second. Herman hits a line drive, Rolf knocks down, picks up, going to be a close play at first.
- 1:22:32Vicki is safe. I believe it will be called a hit. It was a line drive which Rolf leaps for. They're calling it an error for Rolf.
- 1:22:47They call it an error for Rolf. They say that Rolf should have held it, and he gets an error.
- 1:22:52Here's the man on first and the man on third for the National League, and it brings up Archie Vaughan.
- 1:23:03A hard hit ball about a foot or two over Rolf's head. He leaps up and had the ball in his hand and got away from him, went behind him, and the official scorer charges Rolf with an error.
- 1:23:13Herman on first, Elad on third, and brings up Archie Vaughan. Enough spice has made one hit. Fast ball, a little bit too close at the knee, ball one.
- 1:23:23It scores the American League five and the National League two. National League gets that in the first half of the fifth.
- 1:23:29Tommy Bridges the right-hander on the mound. Archie Vaughan is up at the plate. He's ready.
- 1:23:35There's a high foul over to the right. Gary gets getting over under it outside of first base about 20 feet from the bag and has it with R in the side.
- 1:23:44Archie Vaughan with a high foul just outside of first base about 15 or 20 feet of a puck by Gary and he repires the side.
- 1:23:51Two men are left on the bases. That's the end of the first half of the fifth inning, and here's Tony Waxman to send a good one home.
- 1:23:59As we go into the last half of the fifth inning, the ball game stands the American Leagueers five and the National Leagueers two.
- 1:24:06Quite a bit of action in that particular inning. Harknett's single out the center. Barkell fly to west and left, and then Mellott went in as a pinch hitter for five-latton.
- 1:24:14He doubled down the first baseline. Harknett's pulling up a third. Paul Wehner came up and fly to center. Harknett's scoring after the catch.
- 1:24:24Grissom is now pitching for the National Leagueers, just throwing out the mom. And then Herman followed Paul Wehner. He drove the rock with drops the ball, hot moving down to third.
- 1:24:34And then Archie Vaughan, then a high foul down the first baseline to Lou Gary and retiring the side.
- 1:24:40We're going into the last half of the fifth inning. Okay, Bob.
- 1:24:44Well, here's Lou Grissom of Cincinnati, one of the few first-year men to make an all-star team.
- 1:24:49He didn't last year, but they don't do it very often and won't do it very often in the future.
- 1:24:54Grissom, a left-hander, who has a fine record this year for Cincinnati.
- 1:24:58All left-handers on the mound now. Replace Flanton. He's taken out for a pinch hitter.
- 1:25:02And we're starting the last half of the fifth inning with a score of five to two in favor of the American League.
- 1:25:08He's going to be the first man up. Gary gets in up twice. In this case, we saw each extreme. The first time, he struck out. The second time, he hit a home run.
- 1:25:24Now we're starting the last half of the fifth inning. There's a change in the umpires now.
- 1:25:30The National League goes behind the plate. Humpire Barr is going back to the plate. McGon, who's been behind the plate, is going down to third.
- 1:25:45Dave Pennelli is over at second, and Quinn goes to first.
- 1:25:50With the balance of the ball game, the National League umpire will be behind the plate.
- 1:25:54Here's the first pitch to Gary. Gets a strike right around his knee.
- 1:25:57Brissom is pitching a left-hander. That time up, Gary blasted the home run drive way over the right field fence.
- 1:26:03Nobody on and nobody out in the last half of the fifth inning. The American League ahead five to two.
- 1:26:08Here's the next pitch. He's won that time at a fastball around his knee. He tried to stop, but the umpire says it was a strike anyway.
- 1:26:16Gary tried to stop his swing, but the umpire said regardless of whether or not he went more than halfway around, the pitch was a strike.
- 1:26:25So it's two strikes now on Gary. With Brissom getting all set again, here's the next pitch.
- 1:26:30A little bit too low. Keeping them in low and outside for Gary, and that pitch was a little bit too low, and it's a ball.
- 1:26:38Next man to come up will be Averell and then Quinn. The American League is ahead five to two.
- 1:26:50Gary's up at the plate. Here's the next pitch. He started his swing, but he stopped his swing.
- 1:26:56The umpire sees a ball, and Hotnet is complaining about it.
- 1:27:00Gary started his swing at a low outside pitch. He stopped his swing.
- 1:27:05Hotnet claims the umpire was a deal. He could have gone more than halfway around, and the umpire says no.
- 1:27:11The count is two and two on the back.
- 1:27:17Four fine umpires out here today, and they're doing a very credible job.
- 1:27:21Here comes the next pitch. Here's a fastball right down the middle, and he's out on strike.
- 1:27:25Brissom's struck out, Gary. A fastball right down the middle, way high.
- 1:27:30He wasn't expecting the pitch so good. With a count two and two, he thought Brissom had worked him on one, but he hit one right down the alley, and Gary got on strike.
- 1:27:38Here's the center fielder, Earl Avery.
- 1:27:43That's twice today that Gary gets struck out. Avery was in a fight. He's made one hit.
- 1:27:51Now Brissom is getting his time. Here's the pitch. Twice he's thrown at a sidearm curveball and missed it.
- 1:27:58This lad has lots of dough. Lots of stuff on that ball.
- 1:28:08That's his pitching hand across the front of his uniform. He's wearing a gray Cincinnati uniform with a black cap and a bright red suit.
- 1:28:15Red stocking. That's the sky.
- 1:28:18Fastball right down the middle, and Al Avery swung. He swung from his heels that time and missed it.
- 1:28:25Brissom is showing the fans out here an awful lot of pitching in his day two in an all-star game.
- 1:28:33He whistled during a hard hit. This won this spot on.
- 1:28:41We're back when simplest pitch.
- 1:28:45And it's four этому.
- 1:28:49Well, that's a great instantly Проian flop down before a

- 1:29:12Red stockings.
- 1:29:14That's the guy who did that fastball, that's the one right down the middle.
- 1:29:18And how a real trunk.
- 1:29:20He's trunked for the steals that time in this one.
- 1:29:22We're showing the fans out here an awful lot of picking in Asia.
- 1:29:25They do in a non-star game.
- 1:29:29He strikes a neighbor-ill.
- 1:29:36Getting all set up there again. Here's the next pitch.
- 1:29:38Strike three.
- 1:29:39Stuck in that.
- 1:29:40Throw in a curve ball.
- 1:29:41A round of these and struck out.
- 1:29:44That's two-one.
- 1:29:46Next man to come up his corner.

- 1:30:07Ball one.
- 1:30:12Nobody on the two-one. Two strikes off this and in for Grissom.
- 1:30:19Next pitch is coming.
- 1:30:21He's one of the bad pitchers that time.
- 1:30:23Low and inside.
- 1:30:25He strikes.
- 1:30:26Joe strives to swing and then Fizer stops his swing.
- 1:30:29And he turns around out of the crowd with a big smile on his face.
- 1:30:34He looks out on the pitch.
- 1:30:38Thought he took it like a real sport.
- 1:30:40Nobody on the bases for the American League and the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:30:43The American League five to two.
- 1:30:45Grissom is ready.
- 1:30:46Here's the next pitch.
- 1:30:47A fast foul.
- 1:30:48He hits one base.
- 1:30:49He goes to the first base from his head.
- 1:30:50He's going down to the right field corner against the wall.
- 1:30:53And Joe is on his way to second base with a double to return it.
- 1:30:55Pull and double against the right field fifth.
- 1:31:00Right down into the right field corner.
- 1:31:09That is hit number nine for the American League.
- 1:31:12The next man to come up is the catcher, electronic batter, Bill Bickes.
- 1:31:22Grissom takes a lot of time out there getting ready.
- 1:31:25Joe's corner on second base.

- 1:31:33Grissom is ready to pitch to him.
- 1:31:37Here's the next pitch.
- 1:31:39Dickie's pitch is inside, way high, and it's a ball.
- 1:31:44Going along second base, the American League ahead five to two in their batting in the last half of the fifth.
- 1:31:50Grissom is pitching to Dickie.
- 1:31:52Here's the next pitch.
- 1:31:53He flams a fly ball way out into right center field.
- 1:31:56He's going to drop for a lip.
- 1:31:57It goes back against the fence.
- 1:31:59Bender is picking it up.
- 1:32:00He's coming around second.
- 1:32:01He's on his way to third.
- 1:32:02The relay may go back to second.
- 1:32:04As the relay started to come in fast, Dickie went back to second.
- 1:32:07It was a double in the right center field by Bill Bickes, going to have a run for the American League and makes his score six to two in their face.
- 1:32:16Now the next man to come up is the lefty, Lurtz, Sam Lurtz.
- 1:32:25Two doubles in a row after two loss.
- 1:32:28He struck out Gary, and he struck out Abraham.
- 1:32:31So are the doubles and Dickie doubles.

- 1:32:50Here's the next pitch.
- 1:32:51It's low outside.
- 1:32:52There's a throw to second.
- 1:32:53He's back safely.
- 1:32:56Art Taylor put the ball on the runner and would skirt it into the bag, and then the ball rolled out of his glove, but the man was safe anyway.
- 1:33:02Art sent through to second, trying to pick Dickie off.
- 1:33:10Weston starting with a teammate on second base.
- 1:33:13Winston is getting it done.
- 1:33:14Here's the next pitch.
- 1:33:16There's a pop-up in the infield that's caught by Vaughn.
- 1:33:20Just about five feet inside the third baseline, just behind the bag, and it retires the start.
- 1:33:27A little pop-up right in the Vaughn's hand.
- 1:33:29One man is left on the base, and that's the end of the fifth inning.
- 1:33:32All right, Tony, wait.
- 1:33:34And the score at the end of the fifth inning is the American Leagueers six and the National Leagueers two.
- 1:33:39The Americans scoring two runs in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the fifth.
- 1:33:45The National scoring one in the fourth and one in the fifth.

- 1:34:10At the end of the fifth, the Americans six and the National two, and the pop-ups.
- 1:34:16Well, there are no changes. We've reshuffed the first half of the sixth inning of this four game.
- 1:34:21The American League starting team is still in touch out there with the national exception of the pitcher.
- 1:34:26Tommy Burgers is still on the mound, and Potter is going to be the number three pitcher for the American League.
- 1:34:31Here's Dickie coming out, Luke Sewell.
- 1:34:33The White Sox catcher takes a few factors close from Burgers.
- 1:34:37The first round of the national league and the first half of the sixth will be middle.
- 1:34:41The National League is four runs behind.
- 1:34:46Medwick has been up five feet, has gone here to double.
- 1:34:52By Lincoln-Dickie, nobody on and nobody out.
- 1:34:58Medwick swings and fires the ball up into the net, one strike.

- 1:35:34DiMaggio shows the boys some fancy footwork and some fast feeling out there,
- 1:35:39and he raced over to that line wide over the second baseman's head,
- 1:35:42landed in right center field, and some fast feeling by DiMaggio all into a single.

- 1:48:07There's a high hit ball in the left field.
- 1:48:10Here's the left fielder coming in, taking the ball on the bounce.
- 1:48:12It's a hit for Geringer right over the shortstop pit.
- 1:48:15A liner in the left field.
- 1:48:16He puts a man on first and a man on second.
- 1:48:18And there's Geringer's second hit.
- 1:48:20Brings up Joe DiMaggio, getting a hand from the crowd for that beautiful throw from right field,
- 1:48:25which nips a National League rally in the first half of his inning.
- 1:48:36DiMaggio walks the first time. He failed the second time.
- 1:48:39He struck out the third time.
- 1:48:42He was struck out by first.
- 1:48:46Now Rolfe is on second. Geringer is on first.
- 1:48:51Here's the pitch.
- 1:48:53Right over the plate, waist high for a called strike.
- 1:48:56Van Lingo Mungo is picking.
- 1:49:01Mungo picks up the rousin bag and drives his hand carefully.
- 1:49:05Gora's six to three in favor of the American League.
- 1:49:12He takes his time out there again and gets all ready.
- 1:49:14Here's the next hit.
- 1:49:15He's sprung that time at a shot breaking curve and missed it.
- 1:49:18And it's two strikes on Joe DiMaggio.
- 1:49:21A lot of dope on that one.
- 1:49:25Over the outside corner, knee high.
- 1:49:27And DiMaggio took a wicked swing and missed.
- 1:49:31Mungo pulls that green cap of his firmly down on his head.
- 1:49:34Takes his position out there on the rubber.
- 1:49:36Man on first, the man on second for the American League.
- 1:49:38One out, hit.
- 1:49:39Strike three, struck him out.
- 1:49:41Fastball over the outside corner, shoulder high.
- 1:49:44DiMaggio struck out for the second time.
- 1:49:47He's hit up Garret.
- 1:49:52Garret struck out the first time, hit a home run the second time,
- 1:49:55struck out the third time.
- 1:50:01Gary is up on the plate now with two men on the bases.
- 1:50:04Basing Van Lingo Mungo.
- 1:50:08Mungo gets his time to Manchito.
- 1:50:10He's all set out there.
- 1:50:11There's a throw.
- 1:50:12Nope, he didn't throw it.
- 1:50:13He turned around to throw the second base from by tail.
- 1:50:16He threw it in behind Rolfe.
- 1:50:18But he saw the play would be too close and didn't throw the ball.
- 1:50:20Rolfe has already shot it into the back.
- 1:50:23Gets ready.
- 1:50:24Here's a pitch to Gary.
- 1:50:25Gets too low for a ball to lose.
- 1:50:26Ball one.
- 1:50:31Mungo goes back and brings the garage in back and rides his hands.
- 1:50:37Pretty hot out here today and the players' hands and arms get 21,
- 1:50:41especially the pitches.
- 1:50:44Mungo's getting his time again.
- 1:50:47Man on first and a man on second.
- 1:50:48He's letting him for pitch.
- 1:50:50There's a side ball way out of the left center field.
- 1:50:52Demary's going back.
- 1:50:53I don't think he can get it.
- 1:50:54Back, back, back.
- 1:50:55It looks he's been in left center field.
- 1:50:57One run is starting, two runs are starting.
- 1:50:59Here's Gary trying for third.
- 1:51:00Here's the throw.
- 1:51:01It's going to be close.
- 1:51:02He's out of the third.
- 1:51:04Gary tried to go all the way to third base and was out.
- 1:51:07The relay was from Demary to by tail to the third base from Archie Vaughan.
- 1:51:12And Lou Gehrig was out of third.
- 1:51:16The two runs scored.
- 1:51:18Lou Gehrig hit a long side ball way out in the left center field for two bases,
- 1:51:22riding in two more runs and trying to stretch it into a triple.
- 1:51:25He was out on a perfect relay from Demary way out in the left center field corner
- 1:51:30to Vaughan in short center field to the short stop by tail and then to Vaughan.
- 1:51:34And he was out on a very, very close play.
- 1:51:37It was awfully close here at third base and he was called out through the pile of the side.
- 1:51:41All right, folks, you are listening to the All-Star Baseball Game,
- 1:51:46which is coming to you from Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C., the nation's capital.

- 1:52:21The game's between now and favor.
- 1:52:25The American League, the first man to face Mel Harder,
- 1:52:27is now pitching for the American League, his leadoff man Paul Winnick.
- 1:52:31He's been out and up three times today without a hit. First pitch is right down the middle for his play.
- 1:52:42Always talking up out there in the infield.
- 1:52:45Paul Winnick batting and the National League is five runs behind.
- 1:52:48Here's the next pitch. It's a bounding ball over the pitcher's head.

- 1:53:44So Medwick and Billy Herman each have two hits with the National League.
- 1:53:53That was the ninth hit of the National League.
- 1:54:02Aki Moore looks at the fast ball outside knee-high for the ball.
- 1:54:06Next man to come up will be Medwick, the man on first.
- 1:54:12So it's eight to three in favor of the American League.

- 1:54:42Coleman fired to Gary, but no double play. Out of second, state of first.
- 1:54:46Here's Medwick.
- 1:54:48Medwick has been up three times. There's a single and a double.
- 1:54:52Now he's facing Mel Harder. Harder's ready for the first pitch.
- 1:54:56Medwick golfed one into the box piece down the right field line.
- 1:55:00He's throwing a very bad outside pitch.
- 1:55:04And he hit it into the box piece down the right field line.
- 1:55:07And there was lots of punch behind it.

- 1:55:21Moore is eight to three in favor of the American lead.

- 1:56:19Boy, this fella can slam that ball.
- 1:56:22He's putting over 400 for the St. Louis Tigers. 404.
- 1:56:27Harder's getting ready to pitch again to Medwick.
- 1:56:29Medwick hits the bounding ball. He hits down the first base line.
- 1:56:32All pitchers look alike to him.
- 1:56:34He's on his way to second base. Here's the throw from DiMaggio.
- 1:56:37And Vaughn comes around to third.
- 1:56:39It was a double by Medwick.
- 1:56:41His third hit gives him two doubles and a single.
- 1:56:45It's a man on second and a man on third. And the next man to come up is Demary.
- 1:56:50That was a ground ball between Gehrig and the line.
- 1:56:53Gehrig made a dive at the ball and finally kept it to head it off.
- 1:56:56But it eluded him and went down the right field line until DiMaggio got a hold of the ball and fired it back into the infield.
- 1:57:02Vaughn comes around to third and Medwick pulls up a second base with another double.
- 1:57:10Here's Frank Demary. He's been up three times and has made one hit.
- 1:57:21Mel Harder getting ready to pitch not a Frank Demary.
- 1:57:24Here's the pitch. Demary, one and miss.

- 1:59:51Fast ball. D.E. swung that line and missed it.
- 1:59:54Averill went around fast that time trying to get that ball alive.
- 1:59:57It was Mungo's fast ball right down the middle.
- 2:00:00And he missed it. Counted 2-1.
- 2:00:08Averill is getting his sign. Here's the next pitch.
- 2:00:11Fast ball that's too high. Makes it fall free.

- 2:01:41Fine receiver of pitchers. Good hitter.
- 2:01:44Real hustle out there.
- 2:01:46Believe me he's the real back fuller of this Yankee machine.
- 2:01:49Here's the pitch.
- 2:01:50Ball low and inside.
- 2:01:56Bill Vicki up at the plate.
- 2:01:58Ball slung to the left-handed batter.

- 2:02:04The center fielder's waiting. He caught it.
- 2:02:07He hit a fly ball into center field and the center fielder definitely
- 2:02:11had to move until the ball almost got to him and all of a sudden the ball
- 2:02:15slung fast and he made a run for the ball and caught it. There was a sudden
- 2:02:20pull through the crowd here and he retired the shot.

- 2:03:14the nation's capital in Washington.
- 2:03:16Joe McAfee evidently believes in keeping the original lineup in there.
- 2:03:20There are no changes.
- 2:03:22And we're starting the first half of the eighth inning with Johnny Mize,
- 2:03:25the plugging first baseman from the St. Louis Cardinals who's been hopeless
- 2:03:28today coming up to face Mel Harding.

- 2:04:07Here's the catcher, Dust Mancuso.
- 2:04:15Johnny Mize is the first out in the eighth.
- 2:04:18Mel Harding takes a look back around the infield now to see if everybody's in place.
- 2:04:24Shortstop Coleman motions to Sammy West to move over a little bit more for his right.

- 2:05:29Slow roller, they're calling it a hit.
- 2:05:33It was a little pop over the pitcher's head, he caught the ball on the handle of his bat and went over the pitcher's head and dropped down the grass.
- 2:05:40Coleman came in fast for the ball and overran it.
- 2:05:46He had his glove on the ball but couldn't pick it up, he overran it, but the official scorer gives Dick Barthel a hit on it.
