- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to another episode of Fox Crickets podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: The follow On. My name is Courtney Walsh. I'm a
- 0:05Speaker 1: senior reporter based out of the Melbourne office. Please be
- 0:08Speaker 1: joined by former Australian star Fox Cricket favorite Brendan Julian.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Lovely to have you aboard, Brendan.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Going to be here mate.
- 0:15Speaker 4: When I first got the message and going to catch
- 0:17Speaker 4: up with you, Afi, it was Courtney Welsh from the
- 0:19Speaker 4: West Indies and I thought, jeez, I didn't know he
- 0:21Speaker 4: was not a podcast just.
- 0:24Speaker 1: A little slower be fair to say. I've never had
- 0:26Speaker 1: the talent less hair. And I did meet him, no Brandan.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I met him outside the MCG when I was about
- 0:31Speaker 1: seven or eight. I actually had the blonde. We waited
- 0:34Speaker 1: and he walked out of the MCG with Michael Holding
- 0:38Speaker 1: and talked to myself and my dad for about thirty
- 0:41Speaker 1: forty more and he was just outstanding that Michael Holding
- 0:44Speaker 1: was wonderful and I know you have come across both
- 0:46Speaker 1: of them all the way through, but they were.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So generous to a young man.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Well he was to me.
- 0:52Speaker 4: I've met him so many times, but one time I
- 0:55Speaker 4: do remembers I faced him on a hat trick and
- 0:56Speaker 4: Antigua in the second Test match.
- 0:58Speaker 3: And it wasn't just as he wants to put you
- 1:02Speaker 3: outside the endct.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Did he get that hat trick ball? Did you actually
- 1:06Speaker 2: hold him out in?
- 1:07Speaker 4: Heally got out first ball, David Byrne got out. It
- 1:10Speaker 4: was ninety ninety five in the windows and I struggled
- 1:12Speaker 4: through and I remember I remember the first ball that
- 1:16Speaker 4: I fought. I bet he was at the top of
- 1:17Speaker 4: his mark, and I remember walking out there thinking, gee,
- 1:20Speaker 4: here's a long way back, and then looked back at
- 1:21Speaker 4: the keeper and he was way outside the ring. And
- 1:25Speaker 4: this was a Test match, and I'm like, man, this
- 1:28Speaker 4: looks fast. And then I remember Steve Warre coming down
- 1:30Speaker 4: at the other end. He goes, mane, he's not boiling fast,
- 1:32Speaker 4: don't worry about it. Just get your bat down. It's
- 1:34Speaker 4: going to be a Yorker. And I thought, yeah, it's
- 1:37Speaker 4: a good chance to be york And I remember him
- 1:38Speaker 4: running in thinking, right, Yorker, short backlift, just just block
- 1:43Speaker 4: it out, and sure enough was a bouncer and it
- 1:46Speaker 4: nearly hit me in the head and the wind over
- 1:47Speaker 4: the keeper for four buys and then Tuger walked down
- 1:49Speaker 4: the other and he goes Geene's bowled really quick.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Now, So I got through that.
- 1:55Speaker 4: I got through the hat trick, ended up getting sixteen
- 1:59Speaker 4: or seventeen or something that back in the end of
- 2:01Speaker 4: the day out. So yeah, fond Memories of Court You
- 2:03Speaker 4: was not not great, But I do remember I.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Was going to say to you, are you someone that
- 2:08Speaker 1: wakes up in cold sweats at the thought of having
- 2:11Speaker 1: faced the West Indies?
- 2:12Speaker 4: Uh yeah, yeah, Well on that tour ninety five only
- 2:16Speaker 4: got to face you know, Ambrose and Walsh, the other guys,
- 2:19Speaker 4: Joey Benjamin and and these guys Benjamin, Kenny, Benjamin and
- 2:23Speaker 4: a couple of other guys weren't full flight, but when
- 2:26Speaker 4: they get their towels up, and I was not watching
- 2:28Speaker 4: them in that series and I didn't have to go
- 2:30Speaker 4: out at all. So it was that incident to my
- 2:33Speaker 4: other incident was you remember that incident when Steve Warren
- 2:37Speaker 4: Kurt la Ambrose having that argument in the test patch. Well,
- 2:41Speaker 4: I was in next and I was I was yelling out,
- 2:43Speaker 4: why why is he stirring him up?
- 2:45Speaker 3: I'm going in next tried out on a green top.
- 2:49Speaker 4: So yeah, there are frightening moments when you're thinking you
- 2:52Speaker 4: don't want to go out.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And that we had the what was it, the red
- 2:54Speaker 1: handkerchief and you were you were ready to wave the
- 2:56Speaker 1: white flag.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Oh, definitely, definitely. That was that was crazy at that time. Anyway,
- 3:02Speaker 4: and here we are.
- 3:04Speaker 2: It's great, I mean, and these are the things.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And this is why one of the pleasures of talking
- 3:08Speaker 1: to the Fox ship good families. Everyone's faced or played
- 3:11Speaker 1: against some of the great icons, and you can and
- 3:13Speaker 1: you can put them into context. You've got an idea
- 3:16Speaker 1: of how it is in terms of what's happening in
- 3:19Speaker 1: a modern game, but also what you know, well.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree, it's funny.
- 3:24Speaker 4: You know, you look at stats, right you see, you know,
- 3:26Speaker 4: Jimmy Anderson getting you know, I don't know how many
- 3:29Speaker 4: he's got probably thousand tests with you get straw Broad
- 3:31Speaker 4: and got to McGrath. But tell you what, Courtney Walsh
- 3:33Speaker 4: was a gem. I mean he's got five hundred test
- 3:35Speaker 4: wigts and boisy background. It's got a heap as well.
- 3:38Speaker 4: But I reckon Courtney Wish was the best flat track
- 3:41Speaker 4: bowler in the world. I mean it was a flat
- 3:43Speaker 4: track and nothing in it. He just seemed to get wickets.
- 3:45Speaker 4: And you know, you know in longevity. He just him
- 3:50Speaker 4: and then McGrath and Jimmy and they played for a
- 3:52Speaker 4: long long time. It's amazing, that, isn't it. Where I
- 3:55Speaker 4: don't know if you're going to get that out of
- 3:56Speaker 4: players now because you've got so much cricket being played,
- 3:58Speaker 4: but you know those guys would certainly do well in
- 4:01Speaker 4: this year now.
- 4:03Speaker 1: It's very very good to see it. But you've also
- 4:04Speaker 1: been exceptionally busy, Brendan. You've had If we're coming to
- 4:08Speaker 1: the end of what's been a long each summer with
- 4:11Speaker 1: beginning all the way back with effectively South Africa given
- 4:15Speaker 1: the top end series, North Queensland, into.
- 4:20Speaker 2: A New Zealand tour, into.
- 4:21Speaker 1: India, coming out for some white ball cricket late late
- 4:25Speaker 1: October and November, the Ashes, and also what seems to
- 4:29Speaker 1: have been a really really good BBL series and I
- 4:32Speaker 1: guess just coming down to that, we're down to the
- 4:34Speaker 1: last four. You know, we know that tonight there's a
- 4:37Speaker 1: you know, the Stars have got an answer against the
- 4:40Speaker 1: Hurricanes standing home, but the Sixers and the Scorches an
- 4:43Speaker 1: even season.
- 4:44Speaker 2: But do you see those are the best four teams?
- 4:46Speaker 2: Is that how you would have.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Sort of seen it from what's panned out the ladder,
- 4:49Speaker 1: the table is telling the tale of who the best
- 4:51Speaker 1: teams were.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I mean, you know, I did the last game in Adelaide,
- 4:56Speaker 4: which was Renegades and the Strikers, and those two teams
- 4:59Speaker 4: are way off compared to the top four. At the moment,
- 5:03Speaker 4: I think they're I think, you know, settled out right.
- 5:05Speaker 4: It always does, you know, those are the top teams.
- 5:07Speaker 4: I mean, I thought the perse Scads had a slow start,
- 5:10Speaker 4: but you know, you knew that they were going to
- 5:12Speaker 4: come strong. I think the big bonus has been for
- 5:14Speaker 4: the Sixers getting starkey back in Steve Smith. That's really
- 5:17Speaker 4: helped their cause as well, because I thought that batting
- 5:19Speaker 4: is a little bit light there in the Sixers and
- 5:22Speaker 4: that sort of helped. Hurricanes are always consistently very very good.
- 5:26Speaker 4: They've got a great list. I mean, look how well
- 5:28Speaker 4: they're played without Tim David yet I think Nathan Aalyis
- 5:32Speaker 4: is a big one for them him not playing that
- 5:35Speaker 4: game being injured.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And I picked at the start of the season that
- 5:38Speaker 3: starts to win the competition.
- 5:39Speaker 4: They look so good, I mean they have, they haven't
- 5:41Speaker 4: really fired without Maxwell. You know, Sam Harper has been
- 5:45Speaker 4: unbelievable for the Melbourne Stars. But they've just faulded now,
- 5:48Speaker 4: haven't they. I think they'll get up and I think
- 5:51Speaker 4: they'll beat the Hurricanes. I think Maxwell is a big
- 5:54Speaker 4: game player. I think they're playing him out of position
- 5:57Speaker 4: massively with storn It's batting him down the order. I
- 6:00Speaker 4: think this guy should be matten up the order high.
- 6:02Speaker 4: I wouldn't save him just for the power surgeon after
- 6:04Speaker 4: the ten homes, that's what they want to do. I
- 6:06Speaker 4: think he's better than that. I mean, he's gone to
- 6:08Speaker 4: the World Cup. He's better than He's better than ten
- 6:11Speaker 4: or fifteen balls. So I think that they get the
- 6:13Speaker 4: combinations right at the Stars, they can beat the Hurricanes.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Beating the Scorches in Perth will be that will be hard.
- 6:20Speaker 4: I mean there were a lot of traveling and they
- 6:22Speaker 4: play so well as Scorches. At home.
- 6:25Speaker 1: We talk about a couple of the young guns and
- 6:27Speaker 1: we saw one of them and we'll see them in
- 6:30Speaker 1: this I suppose conclusion Marley Bedman last night he ends
- 6:35Speaker 1: up getting the wicked of Steve Smith that there was
- 6:36Speaker 1: some saying this is the sort of coming of age
- 6:39Speaker 1: over almost in that performance. What have you seen of him?
- 6:43Speaker 1: What's impressed you? I remember being in wa when just
- 6:46Speaker 1: before the opening tests of the ashes, and you know,
- 6:48Speaker 1: you could sort of see he was as part of
- 6:50Speaker 1: that sort of squad getting some of the new guys
- 6:53Speaker 1: in what is impress You're about me?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Where do you think you can go?
- 6:56Speaker 4: I see when I first saw him, I hadn't seen
- 6:58Speaker 4: a lot of him until I watch him on the
- 7:00Speaker 4: TV and the Big Bash. I saw him to bowl
- 7:02Speaker 4: against Davey Warner here and in in Sydney, and David
- 7:07Speaker 4: want to fit him behind square for six. I think
- 7:10Speaker 4: first ball that he faced him, but the way he
- 7:12Speaker 4: came back and the way he bowled his line and
- 7:14Speaker 4: length against the left hander under a little bit of pressure,
- 7:17Speaker 4: I thought that was impressive. And I said straight away
- 7:19Speaker 4: said this guy's good. This guy's got a lot of pace.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Don't worry about the pace but his but his temperament
- 7:24Speaker 4: is very good, his actions great. He bowls well to
- 7:27Speaker 4: left handers's that's why I rek. And his strength is
- 7:30Speaker 4: he also bowls well to the right hand if he
- 7:32Speaker 4: can shape it away. But you could just tell there.
- 7:34Speaker 4: His temperament is very good and his pace was consistent.
- 7:38Speaker 4: So I thought that when I first saw him right
- 7:41Speaker 4: back at the start of the BBL. I said, if
- 7:43Speaker 4: they can keep him playing, I think he'll be really
- 7:46Speaker 4: really good. I think him learning that in this T
- 7:49Speaker 4: twenty format. I actually think he's a fifty over bowler.
- 7:52Speaker 4: I think he can be in the one day side
- 7:54Speaker 4: for Australia and certainly hold his line and length. Don't
- 7:58Speaker 4: know about Test grit yet, that's just too earlier. I've
- 8:00Speaker 4: never come out and call it, you know a bowl
- 8:03Speaker 4: of that statues straightaway that you played Test Grigg. It's
- 8:06Speaker 4: all about fitness for him. But I reckon he's got
- 8:09Speaker 4: great accuracy, and I think that's just something that you
- 8:12Speaker 4: don't it's very rare for a guy that can buy
- 8:14Speaker 4: one forty five and have great accuracy. He's got a
- 8:17Speaker 4: really tidy action and simple action. So I think from
- 8:20Speaker 4: that point of view, I think he can progress quite nicely.
- 8:26Speaker 4: And it's great that they're picking him straight away and
- 8:29Speaker 4: they're using him in the four overs. I think that
- 8:31Speaker 4: Ashton Turtis on you know what Marley's bowling, well, he's
- 8:34Speaker 4: getting better and better and better. And I think from
- 8:36Speaker 4: that first game that I saw him against the Thunder
- 8:38Speaker 4: and Sydney.
- 8:38Speaker 3: You know three or four weeks ago to where he
- 8:40Speaker 3: is right now.
- 8:41Speaker 4: I think he's improved, you know, and I think that's
- 8:44Speaker 4: a big time for him, and no doubt I think
- 8:46Speaker 4: it's a great mooved that got him up against Pakistan
- 8:48Speaker 4: on flatish wickets. He bowls quite well on flat wickets
- 8:51Speaker 4: and that's what I like about him as well. It
- 8:52Speaker 4: doesn't necessarily shape the ball away, although he can in Pakistan.
- 8:57Speaker 4: On subcontinent wickets, you need someone that's got speed through year.
- 9:00Speaker 4: And for Abola that he's not skiddy, he's quite tall.
- 9:04Speaker 4: He hits that back of a length, so I think
- 9:08Speaker 4: I think you could boil well on subcontinent conditions.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And that series of preparation for the I supposed to
- 9:14Speaker 1: the T twenty World Cup in Sri Lanka and India.
- 9:17Speaker 1: The series against Pakistan, the first time Australia has traveled
- 9:20Speaker 1: to Pakistani in four years for kind begins in about
- 9:23Speaker 1: a week or so, I think January twenty nine. We've
- 9:25Speaker 1: also got Jack Edwards going across there and Matt Renshaw
- 9:28Speaker 1: is in that in that squad no sorry T twenty
- 9:31Speaker 1: squad where we rested a couple of the place what
- 9:33Speaker 1: what I mean, Jack would be one that's caught your eye.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I'm sure you know what what what's good about him
- 9:37Speaker 1: and a couple of others from the BBL that you've Yeah,
- 9:41Speaker 1: there's a couple that might make this in the in
- 9:43Speaker 1: the maybe not this cycle, but in the next sort
- 9:45Speaker 1: of World Cup cycle.
- 9:46Speaker 2: There's there's a couple to look for.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Well, I think I think certainly the T twenty in
- 9:49Speaker 4: the one day format. Jack Edwars has been a really
- 9:52Speaker 4: strong performan. He's been a strong performer for the Sixers.
- 9:55Speaker 4: You know, he's put his hand up with the bat,
- 9:56Speaker 4: he's put his hand up with the board. He's excellent
- 9:58Speaker 4: in the field. So I I think if he keeps
- 10:01Speaker 4: regressing as well, he's one guy that.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Will lock in.
- 10:04Speaker 4: He'll always be there because, as you know, the Australian
- 10:08Speaker 4: team at the moment, there's so many breaks and it
- 10:10Speaker 4: there's so many players that are resting, there's so many
- 10:13Speaker 4: players that are injured, there's so many players that are
- 10:15Speaker 4: awaiting to get back in the squad.
- 10:16Speaker 3: So it creates opportunity.
- 10:17Speaker 4: So you're going to need the players like at Jack Edwards,
- 10:21Speaker 4: you know, Sean Abbott and those type of players. The
- 10:23Speaker 4: Sixers keep churning out some really really good players. I
- 10:26Speaker 4: think Will Sutherland from the Renegades is another one. He
- 10:29Speaker 4: reminds me of a bit of a Jack Edwards. I
- 10:31Speaker 4: think Jack Edwards has got him at the bat at
- 10:32Speaker 4: the moment, but I think Will Sutherland's better with the ball.
- 10:36Speaker 4: But there are two players that I think Australia can
- 10:40Speaker 4: sort of back up in one day in T twenty cricket.
- 10:43Speaker 4: I think you're going to need those type of players.
- 10:45Speaker 4: I think Chowdrey is a great player from the Hurricanes.
- 10:48Speaker 4: I think he can come out and play T twenty
- 10:50Speaker 4: cricket for Australian in fifty over cricket for Australia. So
- 10:53Speaker 4: he got these young players that are getting the opportunity,
- 10:56Speaker 4: but it's taken them, you know, three or four years
- 10:58Speaker 4: to get to where they are at the moment, and
- 11:00Speaker 4: it's been a slow progression. They've taken on senior roles
- 11:03Speaker 4: and that's what I've loved about the BBL. I mean,
- 11:05Speaker 4: Will Southern is the captain. He should be batting up
- 11:07Speaker 4: in the order. He should be batting four and five
- 11:09Speaker 4: for the Renegade's not. He needs to he needs to
- 11:12Speaker 4: push himself up. Child is battered between one and six
- 11:15Speaker 4: for the Hurricanes and he's sort of taking the Tim
- 11:18Speaker 4: David rob but I think he's better than that as well.
- 11:21Speaker 4: And as you said, Marley Beeman can take one ball
- 11:23Speaker 4: and the power play and can come back and bowl
- 11:25Speaker 4: one in the surge or he can bowl you know,
- 11:27Speaker 4: two in the middle.
- 11:28Speaker 3: So he's got three phases of his bowling.
- 11:29Speaker 4: So I think the BBL has given those guys great
- 11:33Speaker 4: responsibility and I think that's why they're progressing. It's not
- 11:36Speaker 4: going to happen with every criticeter. Guys like Jake Fraser
- 11:40Speaker 4: McGurk need to sort their game out. Either one he
- 11:43Speaker 4: moves from the round gaze or two he bats at
- 11:45Speaker 4: four and five. I think I think god of the
- 11:48Speaker 4: days where you can just sort of go to the
- 11:49Speaker 4: top of the or and just slog and think you're
- 11:51Speaker 4: going to get away with it, and that gives you
- 11:52Speaker 4: a free license. That's not improving his cricket. Where you
- 11:55Speaker 4: see the guys like Sutherland, Beardman Chowdree and Jack Edwards,
- 12:00Speaker 4: they've taken on more responsibility. If players like Jake Frais
- 12:05Speaker 4: McGirk want to get better at their cricket, they need
- 12:08Speaker 4: to take on more responsibility. And what I mean by
- 12:10Speaker 4: that is to go, Okay, well, Jake, you're going to
- 12:12Speaker 4: back four or five next season for the running games,
- 12:15Speaker 4: but you're going to build a build an innings and
- 12:18Speaker 4: you're going to try and win this games. I don't
- 12:20Speaker 4: want to see at the top builder of slogging getting
- 12:22Speaker 4: your free license because I don't think that's improving his cricket.
- 12:24Speaker 4: So he's not the talent, he's no doubt about it.
- 12:26Speaker 4: But he needs to work and find a way for
- 12:29Speaker 4: him to improve his game. And you know that's the
- 12:31Speaker 4: beauty of the BBL. They can do that if they
- 12:34Speaker 4: get given that responsibility.
- 12:36Speaker 2: And it must be it's an interesting one.
- 12:38Speaker 1: It must be testing for a young man who has
- 12:40Speaker 1: had some success very very swiftly to then players in
- 12:46Speaker 1: all sports gets sorted out for a period. It's the
- 12:48Speaker 1: challenge of how you then find a way to rebound
- 12:51Speaker 1: and then excel.
- 12:52Speaker 2: And it's an interesting point you make.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Does he take that extra responsibility as a man who
- 12:57Speaker 1: will be twenty four for I think probably next year.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Is he he's certainly getting ye?
- 13:01Speaker 4: Well, yeah, yeah, it's a way for him to work
- 13:05Speaker 4: out for the captain, you know, Will Southern or the
- 13:07Speaker 4: coaching and you know Victoria or his coaches, Okay, well,
- 13:11Speaker 4: you know you're twenty four now, so let's try and
- 13:12Speaker 4: work out. Because in the BBL, as we've known, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 4: there's plans and you know you get worked out because
- 13:19Speaker 4: you know other teams do their homework. You know, they
- 13:21Speaker 4: find out they go okay, well he plays this way,
- 13:23Speaker 4: so we're going to change your bowl and we're going
- 13:25Speaker 4: to put a different ball rod. So you've got to
- 13:26Speaker 4: be able to adapt. He's not adapting at the moment.
- 13:29Speaker 4: And that's where I think you've got to sit down
- 13:32Speaker 4: in your offseason and go, Okay, what am I going
- 13:34Speaker 4: to be working on in this offseason? If I'm going
- 13:36Speaker 4: to England and playing I'm going to a different league,
- 13:39Speaker 4: You've got to have a process of Okay, how am
- 13:42Speaker 4: I going to make my game better? It's no point
- 13:43Speaker 4: me going in and playing in another league in England
- 13:45Speaker 4: and just doing the same mistakes and getting away with
- 13:48Speaker 4: it sometimes in England or getting away with it in
- 13:51Speaker 4: you know, the Caribean Premier League or wherever it is.
- 13:54Speaker 4: You've got to have a purpose to go, Okay, how
- 13:56Speaker 4: am I going to make my game better? How am
- 13:58Speaker 4: I going to make it better? So I can play
- 13:59Speaker 4: better and the BBL and get selected for Australia because
- 14:02Speaker 4: there are opportunities out There's no doubt about it. This
- 14:05Speaker 4: is the best time to be playing domestic cricket for Australia.
- 14:09Speaker 3: You know, there's.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Spots opening up in the Test side, there's spots opening
- 14:12Speaker 4: up the T twenty, and there's spots opening up the
- 14:15Speaker 4: fifty over Cree. There's no better time to be playing
- 14:18Speaker 4: domestic cricket for Australia. I mean you can see it
- 14:20Speaker 4: now where even the big game play is now resting
- 14:23Speaker 4: or they been their workloads have been wrestling.
- 14:26Speaker 3: So all that does is give you opportunity.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Marley Biebman, Cooper Conley, he's grabbed this opportunity and there's
- 14:32Speaker 4: a rising star of the competition Jack Edwards. You know
- 14:35Speaker 4: you're going to get opportunities, so you need to sort
- 14:37Speaker 4: your game out.
- 14:38Speaker 1: At the other end of the spectrum, Lendon, would you
- 14:40Speaker 1: be flicking if you're a selector, would be tempted to
- 14:43Speaker 1: flick a Davy Warner a steaky text to say, are
- 14:46Speaker 1: you available by chance in February?
- 14:49Speaker 2: What are you up to?
- 14:51Speaker 3: Look, there's no doubt he's played well, there's no doubt.
- 14:53Speaker 4: You know, it's been amazing, a bit like Steve Smith
- 14:56Speaker 4: as well, but I think that ship is sale. You know,
- 14:58Speaker 4: we need to get better and there's no point going back.
- 15:00Speaker 4: You know, these guys have had great careers. I mean
- 15:02Speaker 4: Davey Warner, in my mind, I think he is the
- 15:05Speaker 4: best international cricket in all three formats in the last
- 15:10Speaker 4: twenty years. Barna, I think he's better than COLEI. I
- 15:13Speaker 4: think he's better than Steve Smith, you know, Roch Shalma,
- 15:18Speaker 4: all these greats. He's the top of the top of
- 15:20Speaker 4: the tree. I think David Warner has been the best
- 15:22Speaker 4: cricket in the last twenty years on all three formats
- 15:24Speaker 4: and he's proven that. So it doesn't surprise me that
- 15:27Speaker 4: he's scoring runs. He'll be disappointed that the Thunder aren't
- 15:30Speaker 4: getting into the finals. That'll be his big thing because
- 15:32Speaker 4: as a captain you want your team to be winning.
- 15:35Speaker 4: He's leading from the front. They're not following. They need
- 15:38Speaker 4: to sort out their plan, they need to sort out
- 15:40Speaker 4: their listen as well. So you know, I wouldn't be
- 15:42Speaker 4: going back to David Warner and these type of things.
- 15:45Speaker 4: I think that's a I think that's just one that's
- 15:48Speaker 4: moved on. I know Steve Smith come out and said that,
- 15:51Speaker 4: look he looks great and wants to go to the Limics.
- 15:53Speaker 4: I think that's too far gone the Olympics. I mean,
- 15:57Speaker 4: put him in the squad fisheral anchor. But you've got
- 16:01Speaker 4: to give credit to the selectors. I think they've done
- 16:03Speaker 4: a great job. I think the selections have been spot on.
- 16:05Speaker 4: The only thing I would say this summer is yet
- 16:07Speaker 4: they should have played a spinner at the seg and
- 16:09Speaker 4: the last Test match. But apart from that, you can't
- 16:12Speaker 4: question what they've done. So the plans have been perfect.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Pat Commers and George Bailey have done a great job.
- 16:17Speaker 4: So you know they sticking to their game plan. And
- 16:20Speaker 4: you know, unfortunately for Steve Smith, they couldn't squeeze him
- 16:24Speaker 4: into the squad, even though I would have liked him
- 16:26Speaker 4: to squeeze him there somehow. But who do you take
- 16:28Speaker 4: out at this stage? It's a tricky one. So you
- 16:31Speaker 4: know that's a hard.
- 16:32Speaker 2: One and just running you through.
- 16:34Speaker 1: When you talk about that, I suppose that disappointing campaign
- 16:37Speaker 1: in the Caribbean. We're seeing these back in twenty twenty
- 16:39Speaker 1: four and that World Cup. As we move towards towards
- 16:42Speaker 1: that we last one in Dubai in twenty twenty one.
- 16:46Speaker 1: The squad was announced, you know, a little while ago,
- 16:49Speaker 1: and you think you've touched on this briefly, but it
- 16:50Speaker 1: might get you elaborate a little bit more. You talk
- 16:52Speaker 1: about the fact that we've got a couple of players
- 16:54Speaker 1: being rested and that Maxwell's not going to Pakistan. For example,
- 16:57Speaker 1: We've got we still don't know necessarily where Josh hazel
- 17:00Speaker 1: Wood's adding that team and whether or not he will
- 17:02Speaker 1: be fully primed. You know, he's someone who works exceptionally
- 17:05Speaker 1: well and looked so magnificent as we saw in that
- 17:08Speaker 1: against India before he hurt himself. Pat Cummins, I guess
- 17:11Speaker 1: he's in the same boat. And you run through the squad.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I'll give a quick run through for those I haven't
- 17:16Speaker 1: heard it. Mitch Marsha's captain. We've got Bartlett in there,
- 17:21Speaker 1: Connolly he touched on before. Tim David, we don't know
- 17:23Speaker 1: where he's had injury wise, Cameron Green, Nathan Allie, Travis Head,
- 17:28Speaker 1: Josh Engliss is over as the sole wicket keeper, so
- 17:31Speaker 1: perhaps a little bit of a gamble there. Then youok
- 17:34Speaker 1: at Matt Cuneman, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Short, Marnus Sonus and
- 17:39Speaker 1: Adam Zamper, So you.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Know, quite a few spinning options.
- 17:41Speaker 1: There some queries about whether our premier basement will be fit.
- 17:46Speaker 1: But you've got a couple of guns here obviously, and
- 17:48Speaker 1: Alison Bartlett as well, who are more than handy players,
- 17:50Speaker 1: aren't they.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'll go agree with that.
- 17:53Speaker 4: I mean, the bowling side doesn't sort of worry them
- 17:55Speaker 4: because I know what you're going to get from Pat
- 17:56Speaker 4: Commers and Hayes. So when we saw Pat Commers in
- 17:58Speaker 4: the Test manage when he came back and played last
- 18:00Speaker 4: Test match and then rested. So I don't have a
- 18:03Speaker 4: problem with pack Elms or Hayswood because I know what
- 18:05Speaker 4: you're going to get from those guys. What worries me
- 18:07Speaker 4: would be Maxwell. I'm surprised that he's been rested all
- 18:10Speaker 4: workload relieved or whatever you want to call it for
- 18:13Speaker 4: Pakistan because he should be playing. He's had a pretty
- 18:15Speaker 4: ordinary BBO from his standards, but he's good enough player
- 18:18Speaker 4: to turn it around. I'd rather see him playing Pakistan.
- 18:21Speaker 4: We'll see him in the finals, and you know, I
- 18:25Speaker 4: think him leading up to he needs more work rather
- 18:27Speaker 4: than less work, so I'd be putting the heat on him.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Tim David could be a little bit of an issue
- 18:32Speaker 4: because you haven't bat it for so long. I mean,
- 18:34Speaker 4: batting in World Cup conditions are tricky. You know, they're
- 18:37Speaker 4: not easy when you're coming in the middle lord. For
- 18:39Speaker 4: Tim Dave, you need rhythm. So hopefully he comes back
- 18:42Speaker 4: and he plays as many games leading into it as possible.
- 18:45Speaker 4: I think these training selectors are thinking like a Travis
- 18:47Speaker 4: Head situation where they rested him and gave him up
- 18:50Speaker 4: to the right up to the last minute and then played him.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Then he got one hundred in the final and the
- 18:54Speaker 4: fifty over World Cup. So I think they think they
- 18:58Speaker 4: can get away with it with that, and you know
- 19:01Speaker 4: they're closer to it, they're closer to the players they understand.
- 19:04Speaker 4: I mean probably for these senior players, it's it's more
- 19:06Speaker 4: about their mental approach if they can get into the
- 19:08Speaker 4: right space. I still think that you still need in
- 19:11Speaker 4: a bit of a rhythm as a as a batter,
- 19:13Speaker 4: especially in the middle order.
- 19:14Speaker 3: I think Travis said at the top of the order
- 19:16Speaker 3: can get away with it because.
- 19:17Speaker 4: It's a new ball fields up and you know, you
- 19:19Speaker 4: feel a bit a bit I think a little bit
- 19:22Speaker 4: easier in terms of you've got a bit bill time.
- 19:25Speaker 4: But if you're out there with Tim David you have
- 19:26Speaker 4: fifteen balls and you've got to try and hit thirty.
- 19:28Speaker 4: You haven't battered for a month, that's a bit of
- 19:30Speaker 4: an issue.
- 19:31Speaker 3: So I don't I don't.
- 19:32Speaker 4: I don't worry about the bowling side of it. I
- 19:36Speaker 4: think the batting side of it's always initiated. You touched
- 19:38Speaker 4: on the spin. I think Cooper Connley has been the
- 19:40Speaker 4: most improved bowler in the bb along with Marley Beerman.
- 19:44Speaker 4: I mean Cooper Connley's bowling, He's nearly taking the situation
- 19:48Speaker 4: of a Maxwell.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Oh.
- 19:50Speaker 4: I think Maxwell Harvey bowled on the BBL which I
- 19:52Speaker 4: don't get still and just hasn't used him it. Also,
- 19:55Speaker 4: I think Cooper Connley will be, you know, he'll be.
- 19:58Speaker 4: He should be in the team though out of what
- 20:00Speaker 4: batting six four or five eight, wherever it is. But
- 20:03Speaker 4: he's bowling is really really handy. Your left arm spinner
- 20:07Speaker 4: in subcontent conditions is always very good to take.
- 20:09Speaker 3: So I love that.
- 20:10Speaker 4: As you said, you've got Maxwell with the option of
- 20:12Speaker 4: the ball as well, and then you got Kodman as
- 20:15Speaker 4: a bit of a backup. Zamper didn't play the last
- 20:17Speaker 4: game against Rennegaz. He's been arrested. But I think he's
- 20:19Speaker 4: been the best white ball bowler you know, probably just
- 20:23Speaker 4: outside Hayswood, but he's been the lot for the last
- 20:26Speaker 4: couple of years and he's been the backbone about bowling.
- 20:29Speaker 4: I've got no problems with zams. I think it's a
- 20:31Speaker 4: pretty good squad. It just it just depends what the
- 20:35Speaker 4: format's going to be. Can I think take fifteen as
- 20:37Speaker 4: you said, you've got that backup keeper and I don't know,
- 20:39Speaker 4: maybe Maxwell to do if something goes wrong, or Matthew
- 20:42Speaker 4: Ways in there as a coach, he might he.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Might come out as well. Answer your question, I think
- 20:48Speaker 3: they've got to covered.
- 20:50Speaker 4: You know, obviously there's always worried when you've got players
- 20:52Speaker 4: that are injured, but I'm not worried about the bowling.
- 20:55Speaker 4: I'd only be worried about the batting side of things.
- 20:58Speaker 2: And just look before I let you go.
- 21:00Speaker 1: And it's been a pleasure to have you on Brendan
- 21:01Speaker 1: and the follow on leading into the BBL Finals and
- 21:04Speaker 1: then a big month of cricket to come for Australia
- 21:07Speaker 1: in terms of Pakistan and then the World T twenty
- 21:10Speaker 1: T twenty World Cup in Sri Lanka and also in India.
- 21:16Speaker 1: We look at the format and we've got a five
- 21:19Speaker 1: match basically. You know, there's a twenty team World Cup,
- 21:21Speaker 1: so you roll through your first five teams effectively, look
- 21:26Speaker 1: at that and you think, well we should get through.
- 21:28Speaker 1: We've got sites like oh Man and that we should
- 21:30Speaker 1: be okay. Then you go into another round robin format,
- 21:33Speaker 1: the super eights. It's an extended period just to try
- 21:36Speaker 1: and progress, to try and get to that semi final,
- 21:38Speaker 1: isn't it? And I guess there's a small marginal prayer
- 21:41Speaker 1: but not much you need to be on it. And
- 21:43Speaker 1: it can be a little bit like Russian rule at
- 21:45Speaker 1: these sort of World Cups and T twenty matches. So
- 21:48Speaker 1: how do they prepare for that? How do they go
- 21:50Speaker 1: about it?
- 21:51Speaker 4: Well, look, Pakistan two is a good one, but you're
- 21:56Speaker 4: not going to get most of them, you know, probably
- 21:57Speaker 4: only going to get ten of them that are playing
- 21:59Speaker 4: in those games. I think leading into these types of things,
- 22:03Speaker 4: it's it's more about getting plays fresh, and that's what
- 22:06Speaker 4: they think, that's what they're doing.
- 22:07Speaker 2: You know.
- 22:07Speaker 4: Obviously Pat Cummens Hayes would come back from Ntory. You know,
- 22:10Speaker 4: Travist's had a bit of a break as well. They're
- 22:13Speaker 4: rotating Maxwell and these type of things as well, So
- 22:16Speaker 4: if they can get to that situation where they're fresh,
- 22:19Speaker 4: that's probably a big plus. Like I said, I worry
- 22:22Speaker 4: about the batting, the amount of digs that they're having.
- 22:25Speaker 4: That's a bit of an issue for.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Me, you know.
- 22:28Speaker 4: And when you go to the subcond you get you
- 22:30Speaker 4: get over there and you get through those souper a
- 22:32Speaker 4: series and I'm expecting that, you know, obviously the boys
- 22:35Speaker 4: to get through to that and get into that last
- 22:37Speaker 4: qualifying sort of period. You can hit the ground running
- 22:41Speaker 4: and be nice and fresh, and I think that's it.
- 22:43Speaker 4: It's been a big summer for Australian so they're trying
- 22:45Speaker 4: to rotate the rest of the players.
- 22:46Speaker 3: They've done that.
- 22:49Speaker 1: You know.
- 22:49Speaker 3: The proofs always in the pudding, isn't it.
- 22:51Speaker 4: I mean, you know, at the end of the day,
- 22:53Speaker 4: you could always criticize Australia about wrestling players and then
- 22:56Speaker 4: they go and play in the IBL and they're saying
- 22:58Speaker 4: that they're tired, but you know, come out and they
- 23:00Speaker 4: win like they did against England and the Ashes they won,
- 23:03Speaker 4: so you can't. You can't question it, So it only
- 23:05Speaker 4: gets in trouble when you don't win, and then and
- 23:08Speaker 4: then the hallmarks they start open up a bit as well.
- 23:10Speaker 4: But I think in the next year you're going to
- 23:12Speaker 4: see a lot of changes cameraon because one they're aging players.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Two there trying to rotate them and rest them, and
- 23:18Speaker 4: three there's so many tests. But I think there's ten
- 23:20Speaker 4: test matches in the next eighteen to sixteen months, a
- 23:23Speaker 4: lot of one day tournaments. We played Bangladesh up on
- 23:26Speaker 4: the top end. After the World Cup, they traveled then
- 23:29Speaker 4: I think to South Africa, they come back into New Zealand.
- 23:32Speaker 4: So I think we're going to see a lot of
- 23:33Speaker 4: different players coming in and out of the teams.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And I'll put you on the spot for the last one.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I know you talked about the Stars you thought had
- 23:41Speaker 1: the depth at the start of the BBL you you
- 23:45Speaker 1: were w a Bourne based in Sydney.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Who do you go for in the last four? Who
- 23:51Speaker 2: wins it off the mat?
- 23:54Speaker 3: Well, I'd love to see the Stars perform.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Really, really, what was I think Marcus staun This is
- 23:59Speaker 4: really you know, he seems to have got that team
- 24:02Speaker 4: cranking along, But I think they've stumbled in the last
- 24:04Speaker 4: couple of games. Nathan Allis is a big loss for
- 24:06Speaker 4: the Hurricanes in this game, Maxwell Stein is these big
- 24:09Speaker 4: name players, basically, Sam Harper's carried the side. I love
- 24:13Speaker 4: Pete Siddle the way he's bold. I love Harris Rolf
- 24:15Speaker 4: the way he's bold. In this BBL competition, I'd like
- 24:18Speaker 4: the Stars to go through. I don't think they're going
- 24:21Speaker 4: to beat the Scorches. I mean, they've got to travel
- 24:23Speaker 4: all the way over to the West again. But at
- 24:24Speaker 4: the end of the day, you don't look at the
- 24:25Speaker 4: Scorches list. Man, it's so good. I mean Ashton Turner.
- 24:28Speaker 4: I even thought, even during the BB out of the season,
- 24:31Speaker 4: could they put Ashton Turner.
- 24:32Speaker 3: In the squad for the work up?
- 24:33Speaker 4: I mean, seriously, mate, East bat in five or six
- 24:36Speaker 4: power hit at can Bowl.
- 24:38Speaker 3: It's got all the attributes and.
- 24:39Speaker 2: All the sidhets.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Yeah, and you can't fit him in the team really,
- 24:42Speaker 4: But I'm thinking, I think they need to put this
- 24:45Speaker 4: guy in that I need to get him into the squad.
- 24:48Speaker 4: So and then we still talk about Steve Smith. He
- 24:50Speaker 4: should be in the squad as well. If they don't
- 24:52Speaker 4: perform well in the World Cup, people are going to go. Well, mate,
- 24:55Speaker 4: seats mean should have gone, and Ashton Turners had gone.
- 24:57Speaker 4: All these players should have gone. So you know that
- 25:00Speaker 4: that per scorgeous squad is exceptional. I think Mitch Marsh
- 25:04Speaker 4: he's a big game player. He's my pick for the
- 25:07Speaker 4: best player of the World Cup. I think he'll come
- 25:09Speaker 4: out and cream. I mean he he's got unbelievable power,
- 25:13Speaker 4: great great sort of philosophy, the way he plays the game.
- 25:17Speaker 4: I think players want to play for him. And as
- 25:20Speaker 4: I said, and I think Cooper Connley is a big
- 25:22Speaker 4: game player, even though for a twenty two year old,
- 25:25Speaker 4: he's improved and steadily on the rise with his game.
- 25:28Speaker 4: So they're two good players. And then as I said,
- 25:30Speaker 4: you have Bierman who's bowled really well. Over there, Aaron
- 25:33Speaker 4: Hardy is a power player in the middle order. So
- 25:35Speaker 4: you look at the list there of the scorches made
- 25:37Speaker 4: God Richardson forgot about him, I mean when you're forgetting
- 25:40Speaker 4: about him and I got up there.
- 25:42Speaker 3: So that's that's a pretty good list.
- 25:44Speaker 4: I can't I can't see too many teams getting past
- 25:47Speaker 4: that list, especially over there in Perth.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Noll and Mitch Marsh a good North melwen Man bless him. Look.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Thank you so much Brendan for joining the following I
- 25:58Speaker 1: hope you did get a little break after the after
- 25:59Speaker 1: the summer as well, but it's been enjoyed. Have you well,
- 26:03Speaker 1: have you beaming through into the screens across the
- 26:08Speaker 2: Thanks so much,
