- 2:30Number one in your hearts. Number one in the the program
- 2:33here, double whatever. Way we welcome on tonight.
- 2:37Tomorrow. Connor, yeah.
- 2:42How's it going tonight? Some are you doing good man?
- 2:44Yeah, I'm doing good, very good. Also, the pleasure to have you
- 2:48on. First of all we want to shout
- 2:50out a, thank you for taking the time out of your day.
- 2:53We know how busy you are right now.
- 2:54You he was telling us on his as we were getting them in here
- 2:57that he's been doing a ton of Zoom calls with a ton of teams
- 3:00from the NFL, so, congrats on that.
- 3:03I'm gonna shout out. One more Travis.
- 3:05Travis Wells was nice enough to help us out to get you on, man,
- 3:10and I'm going to shout out. Has he been really good to us
- 3:13over the past about nine months? So shout out to him as well.
- 3:17But let's talk about you man. I mean Senior Bowl, combine had
- 3:24a great showing their Pro days, Zoom calls.
- 3:27Where have you been training in preparation for all this stuff
- 3:31you know after effectively you know the season ended back in
- 3:34December? Oh well for me like soon as the
- 3:38season ended probably like early December, I went straight.
- 3:42Pensacola and started working with EXO's at their facility.
- 3:47Then I worked there all the way through.
- 3:52So have you been working down there with any other Hokies?
- 3:55Or is it mostly been kind of you and other select group of other
- 3:58folks that got that call down there?
- 4:00No, it was just me as far as dating tip.
- 4:03But it was a lot of different guys from different programs.
- 4:07A lot of different job prospects.
- 4:11So it was it was fun working out with those guys.
- 4:14It was a great environment, very competitive.
- 4:17Right man, we just have flying anything.
- 4:20It just kept working. Let me ask this.
- 4:23He was the, he was the player that down there, that kind of
- 4:25pressure you the most, during that course of that.
- 4:29There's trainings pressing me the most actually, I said,
- 4:33probably it's a corner from Purdue not in court.
- 4:36Trish, we did a lot of competing against each other with this
- 4:41franchise in the weight room, just a lot of different stuff.
- 4:47That's what's up, man. I know you've been busy, we know
- 4:49you've been working hard. I guess.
- 4:51You know what, I have to ask for you is you know, during this
- 4:55during your pre-draft workouts and stuff.
- 4:58What's been your main focus and has that focused kind of change
- 5:02with the different stages you've been going through?
- 5:04Yeah, it definitely it definitely changed with the
- 5:06stages at first. You knows all focus on getting
- 5:10ready for the 40-yard dash are that was focused on 40, 40, 40
- 5:14sold. After I ran the four-day to come
- 5:17by, I kind of, I kind of start preparing for the 40 and just
- 5:20start again, trying to get prepared for, you know, real
- 5:25life football. Not just the drills and things
- 5:28like that, but the absolutely get ready to go and play
- 5:31football. So we do you like to hit.
- 5:34We don't watch you play a long time.
- 5:36We know you like to come down hill and hit but you brought up
- 5:39the 40. Did you did you run about what
- 5:41you I mean because but you're in a 45, right?
- 5:44Yeah, 45. Run about what you think you was
- 5:47gonna run. It was you faster than you
- 5:48thought? No, I ran.
- 5:50I ran about what I thought I was going around.
- 5:52I wanted to run into like the how 44 is that's what I was
- 5:56hoping for. I didn't run you the whole time
- 5:58training but I was just hoping for it but this was 450. 450 is
- 6:03about where I was. When I was at the whole time you
- 6:06go there you go. Deal deal.
- 6:09And I mean throughout this process feel like the buzz
- 6:11around you is kind of grown a lot leading up to the draft and
- 6:14it started out with that performance at the Senior Bowl.
- 6:16What was that week? Like for you?
- 6:18I know they have you going through a lot of different
- 6:19practices for a few days and then you kind of get to the
- 6:21game. What was that like for you?
- 6:24That was the long way that was a normal time week but it was fun.
- 6:28It was a fun week met. A lot of great people.
- 6:32It was it was real fun to go out there and compete against all
- 6:34the guys around from different teams around the country.
- 6:38So those great be just being able to compete against guys and
- 6:42and just go out there and show what I can do.
- 6:45Did it, did it kind of remind you a little bit of like what it
- 6:48was like back in like like scouting camps when you were
- 6:51kind of getting recruited with a similar type of energy, or was
- 6:54it, was it a different level of energy?
- 6:57There it was, it was kind of like that.
- 7:00I say that I said the combine was more more so like that but
- 7:04the seeable it was it was more. It was more soldiers everything
- 7:11oh no just so busy like that so much stuff going on.
- 7:16Well, let's talk about the combine a little bit because the
- 7:18combine, you know, over the last really five years, it's become a
- 7:22huge event. I mean, big event for fans,
- 7:26obviously, it's always been a big event for the players out
- 7:28there, tending it and we know you ran to 40, but with that
- 7:31your favorite drill or was there something else there like that?
- 7:34You felt like this shows people. More of what I am as a player or
- 7:38my athleticism but now I see I see some of the positions was
- 7:43definitely was my favorite like that.
- 7:46I actually like the drill. You pedal Flip Flip?
- 7:49Then you like go to the Post. Okay, I say that because that's
- 7:53like I just, I loved like the Deep ball drills.
- 7:56This on it. You can, you can flip, you can
- 7:59move, you can cover ground. So, that was definitely my
- 8:02favorite one. Yeah, and I like hearing that
- 8:06too because, you know, we talk about the the thing so much
- 8:09about all running and the agility, but the reality is you
- 8:13still don't have like football. You still got to know What you
- 8:15just said, like you like a drill that like I have to do this in a
- 8:19game. You have to put my hips and I've
- 8:21got to locate where the ball is and go find it.
- 8:23I love hearing that because it tells me that for you it's more
- 8:26about ball than it is just about, you know, getting in
- 8:29great shape which you always have been definitely, definitely
- 8:34and you mentioned a couple of different drills.
- 8:37Just what you're talking to us about here.
- 8:39Looking at it on TV, of course, it's much different than being
- 8:43there in person like you did. But how much time do you have
- 8:47like between your drills? And if you do have any time down
- 8:51time, what were you doing with that down time?
- 8:54They all kind of bat the bat. So it'll probably be.
- 8:59It's like once you get to position drills, they all better
- 9:02bad. Like you have the 40, then once
- 9:04you move on everything just bad too bad.
- 9:06But with the 40, I see. After the 40 probably had, like
- 9:1110 minutes, like probably like 5 to 10 minutes to get ready for
- 9:15the position drills, then but those are those pretty much
- 9:19better back soon as the last guy got done, we moved on too quick
- 9:24for me. I'm old fat man.
- 9:39Down and back. But okay, okay.
- 9:41Well, Mosers, it was just like you just go through one time,
- 9:44girl. Oh, wow.
- 9:46It's wild. It's just one time.
- 9:48And it's like I like you want to sit here like this is my mom's
- 9:51National career. One time is all you going to
- 9:54give me? Come on now.
- 9:55That's what all that prep down there and I know but I mean
- 10:00salute to you on that, I heard your whole life and I heard
- 10:04whole life. Do it, right?
- 10:05Do it. Like you do it wrong you alone?
- 10:08Yes. I got some kind of pivot away
- 10:12from that for, but what are you had quite a few position coaches
- 10:17during your time in Blacksburg? But most recently it was
- 10:21piercing Prelude, you know? You know, coach spray lube.
- 10:25That's a guy by Youth, Man. Me, Brian.
- 10:28And tally coming up here. That was like the original DBU,
- 10:32man. When he was on those teams in
- 10:33the early 90s, what's something? And I mean, obviously a 14-year
- 10:38career Robbie's talked about him but he's going on later about
- 10:41how long he lasted, he was forever in the league but what's
- 10:45something that you gain from that relationship that you feel
- 10:48like is going to help you on the next level?
- 10:51I learned a lot from Coach P. Just not from this past year
- 10:55over the years, you know, he been at Virginia Tech really
- 10:58since I really like, since I got your brother's a 20-19 been
- 11:01there. So, some nice, a Deft over this
- 11:05past year that he and Pat me, with his, his Energy like you
- 11:10never go see coach Pete with a bad day, he always having energy
- 11:14up and that that really be helping the guys in my room just
- 11:18to, just to show like, we got it, we got a brand new energy
- 11:21today, we always got to be energized.
- 11:24I always gotta be the guys talking on the defense man,
- 11:28typing, everybody up, man. I absolutely love hearing that,
- 11:32man. I love hearing that, you know,
- 11:35because sometimes, you know, every day, you're not going to
- 11:37have your A game. But if you're bringing the
- 11:38energy, Bring positivity. It shows and it feels, you know,
- 11:44I'm sure not only among geology and you're like you said the
- 11:46entire defense, man? I love doing that.
- 11:49Yeah. And I remember we've been a
- 11:51couple guesses on what we've kind of talked about how coaches
- 11:54are on the field. Every time we asked about Coach
- 11:56P, it's always about the energy. That's that's the response we
- 11:59get from everybody. I'm glad to hear it coming from
- 12:02a player not just from somebody that's observing practice.
- 12:05Welcome to here. Let's, let's, let's switch.
- 12:09Gears a little bit here. We're going to talk a little bit
- 12:11of the the 2022 season with you will retrospect, you know,
- 12:16compared to most of your career where you kind of play that
- 12:18hybrid, nickel last season. You were, you kind of used in a
- 12:21lot of new and different ways. You're off the line of scrimmage
- 12:24a little bit more than you have been.
- 12:25In the past occasional, you were holding down the linebacker spot
- 12:29depending on some of the Personnel to that was deployed.
- 12:32You feel that allowed you to play the some of your Different
- 12:35Strings that you had been able to Showcase previously.
- 12:38Yeah, I see it did. Just don't let me go back and
- 12:42play that true say just what I wanted to go back and just show
- 12:46that I can play true safety. Instead of just me Ben a nickel
- 12:49II. Mother gave me like a real
- 12:52versatile player that can play multiple spots multiple
- 12:54positions. So just me being able to show
- 12:57that and initially going into the season.
- 13:00I wasn't even supposed to play nickel at all this year.
- 13:02So what last year? So we had a talk before the
- 13:06season and coach. The move me back, the nickel for
- 13:11a nickel package. And I just, I just took that and
- 13:14just They just bought all in with it.
- 13:20Yeah we can talk you tell that for sure because I mean you know
- 13:23we looked at the season you know the defense definitely was the
- 13:28steadiest unit on the team and you know definitely see your
- 13:31leadership sun shining through there.
- 13:33I know tell he's got something he wants to ask you next I'll
- 13:35let him go ahead here. Yeah.
- 13:37Well before we go to the next point I want the I want to hit
- 13:39you with a little something something today ain't on the and
- 13:41on The Ledger because we again we watch you play man.
- 13:45We fail in just you know fell well yeah, you talk a little
- 13:49trash because you He hit you can hit pretty good, but most of the
- 13:52time when I play with people who can hit like you hit, they talk.
- 13:55So there's some good trash talk there and you from Florida, you
- 13:58talk some trash. Yeah, outside I'll talk a lot of
- 14:00jazz. That's what I got to ask you but
- 14:22kind of going back to what we was talking about with the 2022
- 14:25season, not quite the outcome. That we anticipated all we
- 14:28wanted. But what we've seen is fans you
- 14:32guys stuck together and you fault you know what I'm saying.
- 14:36Every game it seems like we was hanging in.
- 14:39Now we was we was doing what we had to do.
- 14:42All you guys were doing what you had to do to hang in now.
- 14:45Kind of brought it together at the end of the at the end of the
- 14:48season at the Liberty game. Game, what what did you and the
- 14:53other leaders on the team kind of do to keep the team together
- 14:56do through those rough stretches.
- 14:58Um, I still we just tried to stay positive throughout the
- 15:02whole stretch. You know, it was it was real
- 15:05rough losing all those games back to back.
- 15:08So just us trying to stay positive.
- 15:11Just trying to tell everybody to buying with the team.
- 15:14Know everybody pretty much is already bought in so it wasn't.
- 15:17It wasn't that hard to keep the guys together.
- 15:20But I'd ever say just make sure everybody staying positive, no
- 15:25matter how much we losing just keep competing and keep coming
- 15:30back trying again and just trying to try my best to get a
- 15:33dub. Yeah, one thing like I said as a
- 15:37fan man, I didn't get to come to any games this year but I've
- 15:41been to a couple of games. I got to see you guys in person,
- 15:44but watching it on TV, I guess you can kind of tell a from a
- 15:50Fan's perspective you can tell like all men.
- 15:52It looked like you know they gave up, they ain't got no
- 15:54fight. I didn't see very many plays in
- 15:57games where that team especially the defensive unit gave up or
- 16:02didn't have that fighting. So That's what as a fan.
- 16:05Like I said, that's what gets me optimistic about, pretty much
- 16:09the groundwork that you guys laid down the guys just leaving
- 16:12for the people that's coming in. So and we salute you for that.
- 16:15Definitely, you sure appreciates.
- 16:18Yeah, absolutely on that. And I know we were talking the
- 16:20last time I was in lane Stadium, you were playing on the
- 16:24defensive side of the ball, shutting out, pit in the rain
- 16:27for Bud Foster's. Last game back in 2019.
- 16:31And that rain feel you said you told us right before we were
- 16:33chatting it up, you were like You get off the fuel, you were
- 16:35soaked that day, but y'all play the hell of a game.
- 16:39Let me ask this, those kind of pivot away.
- 16:42You've been busting your butt obviously, grinding, getting
- 16:44ready for. You know the draft.
- 16:46I'm coming here in the Hokies have been in, you know, Spring
- 16:49ball, something you went through, obviously, you were as
- 16:52years. Give me one thing you miss about
- 16:55Spring ball and one thing you don't miss about Spring ball.
- 17:01Let me see. I see one thing I miss is
- 17:04probably probably just bending locker room been around all the
- 17:07guys talking trash playing around, whatever death of the
- 17:12been around the team and being around the guys, something that
- 17:15I don't miss. I probably have to say, getting
- 17:19up from practice, but other than that.
- 17:23Yeah, I actually get enough practice, you know, right now
- 17:25I'm kind of, I'm kind of just getting out working out.
- 17:27Are they just at my own pace? So, Definitely the winter
- 17:34workouts worse, or was it the the grind of the spring
- 17:37practice? No, it's definitely winter
- 17:39workouts. Notice what was that was the
- 17:45worst part of winter workouts in for you?
- 17:48Was it just the kidnapper? Was it a specific drill or any,
- 17:52any sort of thing y'all had to do?
- 17:55I see I see the combination of you get nothing to get having to
- 17:59get up at six in the morning and doing all those drills and it
- 18:03cold in door, man, it was crazy, it was crazy.
- 18:12Yeah, I mean you know you went through numerous spring practice
- 18:15during your time at Blacksburg. Let's focus a little bit on the
- 18:18one from last year though. What's something that coach prop
- 18:23put in place for the spring practice and in maybe even
- 18:26spring game last year. That kind of, you feel like
- 18:29helped you most that as you rolled into that 2022, season as
- 18:36a the competition peers that we do like we do.
- 18:41We're in the beginning of every practice will do competition
- 18:43periods. It is to be like one-on-ones
- 18:46wide receivers DB 0 line, versus D line or a to be like angle
- 18:51tackling and it just before are appeared.
- 18:54Before every practice at the beginning, just just to start
- 18:58practice, I'll get practice going.
- 19:00Just everybody do the competition periods offense
- 19:02versus defense. The loser got to do push-ups
- 19:07Yeah, that seems like that was something that the coach prop
- 19:10put in. I know, you know, that was like
- 19:11his informant, if it's from day one, right.
- 19:14Talking about getting more competitive, it kind of started
- 19:16winter workouts and they fed over in the spring practice,
- 19:19right? Yep.
- 19:21Just competition. It was real final.
- 19:23Definitely those one-on-ones just get practiced.
- 19:26One had a whole team height, so it was really fun.
- 19:31I know somebody that likes to talk trash, really enjoys the
- 19:33competition piece, so I bet you were driving in that
- 19:36environment, right? Definitely, man.
- 19:40We know you're busy, we appreciate you definitely for
- 19:42coming out and spending some time with us.
- 19:45But I got to ask, man, I know you getting ready for the draft.
- 19:48Are you going to be in town and Blacksburg for the spring?
- 19:51Game is Aaron B. Just ringing.
- 19:54I probably just ringing but yeah, I definitely there.
- 19:58Okay, cool. 22 in the two out of the three of be that me and
- 20:02Brian to be there. Curtis has some some family
- 20:05duties. You got to take it.

- 20:10man. Shake your hand.
- 20:11All I asked for for picture ain't gonna be a super firm.
- 20:14You don't say I don't want to take a picture Jamar, is there
- 20:21anybody? I mean, obviously mentioned the

- 23:52wings. Get some ribs.
- 23:54Get some burgers. You see what Curtis did?

- 24:01long as Curtis but I'm going to tell you right now.
- 24:03If you think you're going to be on that Evan now he's not well
- 24:07we've we've already had the conversation, I ain't wasting my
- 24:10Sunday to come get him out of Blacksburg.
- 24:12So his wife don't know, guys, I know everybody that watched the
- 24:18state of the program. Knows what we're talking about
- 24:20but they're gonna be, I think that's what The fifth out in
- 24:27three hours once a year. Oh, I'm going to hear that
- 24:30Robbie. And now, because Robbie seen,
- 24:31you also at your best doing something like that.
- 24:34Oh, he come see, what kind he got on to go Robbie.
- 24:41The that, that skating program night was quite entertaining
- 24:46from my perspective that was Robbie, probably ain't see me
- 24:50like that in a good minute if we could use Was it was it probably
- 24:58your wedding? He probably was it probably
- 25:02wasn't. I don't know how anybody got any
- 25:04kind of shaped at my wedding because you can put it after,
- 25:08you can put it in. That's still to this day.
- 25:12The hottest day on record in Virginia.
- 25:17I swear it's something about weddings in Virginia Beach
- 25:19because we got married in Virginia Beach to and it was the
- 25:22hottest day of that year, the AC, when they see reception your
- 25:26wedding napkins that we have The tables and they were like using
- 25:32likes wet Rags? Or are you trying to warn you,
- 25:35when you get mad, your wife going to put you in that box of
- 25:38you start acting crazy, you gotta get your mind, right?
- 25:42And not so much. The wife is the kids to true.
- 25:44I did not drink Evan on my wedding night, so and I'm sure
- 25:47my wife is thankful for that. I know she is well, look, we
- 25:51bought Robbie on no intro. Just bring him on because we
- 25:54were talking having fun. Wait a minute, okay, Robbie
- 26:00come. Often coach Robbie Compton
- 26:02longtime friend of me and Brian coaching up at North Wilkesboro.
- 26:05The Vikings he's got he's into, he's he is in y'all, he is in
- 26:11the locker room there. So he's gotten dealing with,
- 26:14he's got nothing. You got the jersey in the
- 26:15background Jersey, got his, got his high schools go and show
- 26:19t-shirt. That's a cool shirt.
- 26:21Y'all got here solely on. Thank you Nicole.
- 26:25We are Vikings of cool but just a few short weeks.
- 26:32Robbie got a chance to go down to the coaching Clinic that we
- 26:36all saw a bunch of videos from we heard about, we saw them from
- 26:40Odin, it and he is going to not only talk what what he observed
- 26:45down there because this is the first time that you have got to
- 26:47meet the new staff. I know, we know you have
- 26:49relationships all within that staff, but to be back in
- 26:54Blacksburg you and Coach, with techie, went down there with
- 26:58you. Head coach are with you, and And
- 27:00I will start off this because one too long ago on when Joe
- 27:05Rudolph left, you said it aloud coach crook.
- 27:10You said it keep your eye on poach Crook and unless they do
- 27:14we know you have a history. We know, you know, Derrick
- 27:16Jones, we know, you know, Stu, hold fontelle, right?
- 27:21Yeah, complete. But coach mines was a wide
- 27:24receiver coach at East Carolina, when I was there.
- 27:28Yeah, well found walks away Greenville.
- 27:31Patient rooms with a Duke and recruited some of our players
- 27:34out there. Coach Price.
- 27:38I've known for a few years. When he was a JMU, he recruited
- 27:43a couple of our guys, when I was coaching in Virginia.
- 27:48So I me, I'm right here and Coach Holton backyard, where
- 27:51Hannah grew up and where he's bad coach for years.
- 27:55I spent most of the clinic talking, to his dad, with meals
- 27:59and stuff like that, you know, just kind of hanging out with
- 28:01what, coach hope the time or two, when he was Rocky Mount.
- 28:08Yeah, we've had two. I've got a few Connections in
- 28:11that crowd, I guess. Yes, you do.
- 28:13But I get this feeling that you're kosher their closest
- 28:17relationship, maybe with Coach crook.
- 28:19First of all, give us a little bit of the history between, you
- 28:24know, how you got to know coach Brooke, and how long?
- 28:26Because again, when you said that name out, you know, I'll be
- 28:30honest, I didn't know who it was.
- 28:31Quickly looked up and saw his track records, like, okay, but
- 28:35give us your history and kind of your relationship with him for a
- 28:38long years. I met coach crook through my
- 28:42head coach, the guy that I've worked with for the last 14
- 28:45years, David will Thank you, coach with Becky actually played
- 28:50for Coach crook at Glenville State College.
- 28:54It's going to State University now but Coach crooked.
- 28:58One point was at a smaller School Clarion in Pennsylvania
- 29:04and he was in recruited in and they ended up going to Glenville
- 29:10State and they brought his recruitment with them to Global
- 29:13State brought him in a seaplane coach and Coach 10, who's
- 29:19actually a Wake Forest right now.
- 29:21Those were head coach and offensive line coach when he
- 29:25played a Glenville State. For a couple of years and, you
- 29:29know, smaller schools like that with bigger coaches, they tend
- 29:32to come in and go, he played with, he played with a few guys
- 29:37that I've made some connections with going to different clinics
- 29:41and stuff, which is exactly how I met coach crook at the time.
- 29:45Coach crook. Was that the first time I met
- 29:48him? I think coach Cook, was a
- 29:49Harvard or may have been Stanford, and he was coaching
- 29:54tight ends at Stanford or Line tight ends at Harvard.
- 30:00He ended up going to Cincinnati. And, you know, we just every
- 30:04time we'd run across the middle at a clinic or, or coach, whoa,
- 30:08would call and ask you some questions about different
- 30:11things. Offensive line, wise, run things
- 30:13by and I mean, he's always been there to help with anything we
- 30:16needed. So I mean, that's just it's just
- 30:21a run across them here and there, you know, coach will call
- 30:24them every now and then and get some advice.
- 30:26Yes, and he's always been very open to helping anybody
- 30:31especially when it comes to that offensive line game.
- 30:35I mean, he loves it man, it's what he does and it's shown
- 30:39throughout his career. And the big thing I knew when
- 30:45when I told you guys to watch out for him I knew he'd fit in
- 30:49to that program. I knew he and Coach pry had as
- 30:53coach price. I said, hey kick somebody saying
- 30:56dirty. In West Virginia and Mary is up
- 31:02there and in the Northeast. So he had that connection with a
- 31:08lot of folks and I knew it was a good possibility especially with
- 31:12the type of game that he coaches and how he does things.
- 31:15Do you think like based on what you saw as what they were
- 31:20reverting to near the end of last season offensive ly?
- 31:23Is that another reason you thought him to?
- 31:25Because obviously, when he was a NC prions mentioned it.
- 31:28You mentioned it. They run a lot of split Zone and
- 31:30as as there is, what coating on is probably going to, it's going
- 31:36to be a lot of elements of that. That is that answer.
- 31:39That's something that I think he's excelled that for many
- 31:42years running their the devil, The Zone, his blocking schemes
- 31:49and things are very Zone oriented Our offense is built
- 31:53off of the same principles that coach crook is going to teach at
- 31:57Virginia Tech. We've been running on for years,
- 32:00that's what we'll take he believes in because he learned
- 32:03it there. And I mean it's I think it's
- 32:07going to fit, well it's going to help and you're going to see a
- 32:11vast Improvement, I think in the Run game because as we know that
- 32:15our POS run-pass option, if you can't run or you can't pass the
- 32:19option, a very good. I want to do a little bit off.
- 32:25I want to go a little bit off of what we got playing.
- 32:29I want to ask you something. I'm just looking at you man.
- 32:32You know this is my first time. I didn't seen you tweet a little
- 32:35bit out until you put some stuff in the in the chat a little bit.
- 32:38This is my first time getting to talk to you, face-to-face.
- 32:41I'm trying to figure out what kind of Coach you are.
- 32:44There's yourself because like when you go to church, you have
- 32:47those pastors that teach their open, the Bible that go, you
- 32:51know, this is John 3:16 and for God.
- 32:53So loved the world and then they'll teach it to you.
- 32:55He and you got the other type pastors and they can we call
- 32:59them in the black community. We call them Hooper's.
- 33:01That's the one that's in law. Had a we going deep this thing
- 33:05right? You know.
- 33:06So putting that into the football world.
- 33:09Are you think you more of a teacher or Hooper?
- 33:13That's what I. Well, I'm going to put it this
- 33:15way. I'm a few days away from turning
- 33:1840 and I've been His mail. I used to be a chuppah.
- 33:25I'm glad you're back to talking about Coach coach crew.
- 33:33What kind of Coach do you feel like he is?
- 33:36He's the guys are gone. The guys are going to love his
- 33:42personality. The way he gives things, he
- 33:45takes a great interest in all the guys, he's going to teach
- 33:49him. And, and he's just, I'll never
- 33:55forget, coach World. Told us one time and we were
- 33:58talking to him about it there the week and we were there.
- 34:01One of the greatest things that he talked about, he and Coach
- 34:05crook said, I don't have any idea what point I was proving
- 34:08with that. He said, but I do remember
- 34:10saying that something was going on and he just stopped
- 34:13everybody. He says, two things boys, you
- 34:16don't mess with me. He said my sandals and leave
- 34:20Blouson. And when I'm just saying, Brian
- 34:23knows I'm talking about meatloaf, I'm not talking about
- 34:26the ground beef, getting a product, we're talking about the
- 34:29man, the myth, The Legend, and the musician that is meatloaf.
- 34:34And basically, I mean, he's kind of Coach, but he's not going to
- 34:42take any mess and they're going to do it, right?
- 34:45And it's going to be taught. Well, it's going to be taught
- 34:47sound, and I think the guys are really good.
- 34:51Already. I think the guys already really
- 34:52like it and understand what he's going for.
- 34:56And now with Coach Davis coming in there to help some to, he's
- 35:01doing a lot of things that are like coach, whoa said, you can
- 35:06already see some of the things that coach Davis has is talking
- 35:10about and looks kind of taking some of those and going.
- 35:13Well, that's a little different than I've always done but it'll
- 35:15work. So he's going to adapt things.
- 35:17He's gonna find what works? And I think you're going to see
- 35:22nothing against coach Rudolph, but I think you're going to see
- 35:24a big Improvement on, on the product on the field simply
- 35:28because some of these guys may be a little more comfortable and
- 35:31what's going on and the scheme's, may fit a little
- 35:35better. Yeah, I think we've observed
- 35:38that last year, just looking at, you kind of had Brad Glenn, that
- 35:42it came from a very quarterback Rush heavy background between
- 35:47Georgia State appstate. You had what bow Have been doing
- 35:50with the more Moorhead style rpos.
- 35:54And then you had yeah, Joe Rudolph very much a kind of
- 35:59ground-and-pound pro-style Smashmouth offense.
- 36:03Yeah, it seemed like sometimes like those philosophies were
- 36:06competing with each other at points last year.
- 36:09It didn't really seem like we could get into that kind of
- 36:12flow. And when I was looking at it, I
- 36:15kind of like this this might be something that on paper look,
- 36:20Good. Okay, you got Ragland experience
- 36:22offensive coordinator at the G5 level.
- 36:24You got Joe Rudolph coming in experience offensive coordinator
- 36:28at the power 5 level of Wisconsin kind of helping Boeing
- 36:32work into being a full-time power five offensive
- 36:35coordinator, but it ended up just being too many cooks in the
- 36:38kitchen and sometimes yeah things that just didn't always
- 36:42mesh. Well as it was kind of coming
- 36:46out in the wash and I feel like we do we talked a lot about the
- 36:49staff kind of Shuffled around and I feel like ultimately, it's
- 36:54a addition by subtraction in some ways where you kind of
- 36:56move, you know, you're a guy that you already have on staff.
- 37:00That's coach tight ends before back to that position.
- 37:03You get Boeing in there and to do spot where he's comfortable
- 37:06with guess. He's going to be the engine of
- 37:09the offense from a coaching standpoint, where is the
- 37:12quarterback would be that you have on the field and then you
- 37:15bring in a guy with experience like crook.
- 37:17I mean I feel like again we may have some Addition by
- 37:20subtraction there in terms of what we were doing last year.
- 37:24So I'm looking forward to seeing what that looks like.
- 37:26Especially you know, I don't know if we're going to get the
- 37:29greatest look. This this Saturday we'll talk
- 37:32about that more in a little bit here.
- 37:34I'm getting started. Oh they do.
- 37:37They'll let's come and they don't get me started.
- 37:39They already got me. These two got me started.
- 37:41Last night, we chatted for a few minutes.
- 37:42They got me started already the world say, I mean, just that it
- 37:47was never fully stated. But in talking to some of the
- 37:53guys in here and some of them talk, the whole thing is
- 37:57switching, offensive line, coach has and things like that there
- 38:02was never a bad thing, said, about Coach Rudolph.
- 38:04I mean, they were all, they all praised him and the great things
- 38:08he did and and what he did for the program and helped out it's
- 38:12a. But it almost seems like they're
- 38:16excited about going in a direction that they're doing
- 38:18with Coach crook. And changing some things up a
- 38:21little bit and being a little more productive in the style
- 38:25that they want to play. And I think that's going to be
- 38:30big. For for the future.
- 38:35So I mean, like they said, he's going on to Notre Dame and
- 38:40they're going to put together more of what he's used to the
- 38:45the big 65, 330-pound road grader, offensive lineman, and I
- 38:51think you're going to see, I think you're going to see the
- 38:53Hokies go back to a little bit more Zone.
- 38:57Little bit quicker, offensive lineman because I had no, I know
- 39:01crew. Rook, he's always said his when
- 39:04he looks at at high school kids coming into play offensive line.
- 39:08He likes the guards that wrestled and the tackles that
- 39:13play basketball. He likes those athletic feat the
- 39:17way they move hips. He's going to, he's going to
- 39:21build double-teams and you know, you don't have to be 330-pound
- 39:27man. Squatting 7, 800 pounds to move.
- 39:31When you got two of them there and really do some things, and
- 39:37it's going to be going to be successful with it.
- 39:41I really do. Yeah, I'm looking forward to
- 39:45seeing what? Your what differences are?
- 39:47I know, we'll probably get a little bit of, look at that, at
- 39:49this weekend. Yeah.
- 39:50And then, just again, seeing how the line kind of meshes.
- 39:54I feel like they were points last year were, you know, one or
- 39:58two blocks away from things looking, the way they need to do
- 40:01to kind of break break, something to make something
- 40:03happen on offense. And I'm looking forward to
- 40:06seeing if shifts and scheme shifts of philosophy of the
- 40:10coach are our, what can kind of put Those pieces together for
- 40:13that, you know, and that's that's what crook has been
- 40:15saying is, it's Christmas saying, you know, we got to find
- 40:19the five, they can they can do everything the best together.
- 40:23You know, it's all you always got to find the 5S ones, but
- 40:27when it comes to that offensive line group, they've got to be
- 40:29able to work together, the five of them have to be able to work
- 40:31together and if the final ones are the five best ones working
- 40:36together, then that's what it's gonna be yet, but he's got to
- 40:38find them go in together. Well, what I loved that person
- 40:41of you, he said jail. Yes.
- 40:44Like they got a gel and at me because sometimes you here and
- 40:48y'all Robbie's coach getting tallies play.
- 40:50Robbie, you coached and played a lot of times.
- 40:53I just want to five best. Well, sometimes your five best
- 40:57night. I've been at work together the
- 40:58best, but if you have five guys who were like I mentioned last
- 41:01week, like I know when he goes up, his punch is going to be
- 41:05here. I can get my guy and turn him
- 41:07and he's getting up to second level.
- 41:10Versus I his punch. I don't know where it's coming.
- 41:13I don't know, you know, sometimes he punches eyes
- 41:14sometime, but when I heard him say gel, it immediately makes me
- 41:18think it doesn't shock me. He's got the more Brothers next
- 41:22together. He doesn't shot me right there.
- 41:24Done shot me that they're together because it will hold on
- 41:30to that because we don't get into the preview you and you can
- 41:32talk about what he's excited for.
- 41:33But um, That that really caught my eye.
- 41:38Now, Riley, let's hit on a few other subjects here.
- 41:43Ryan won't let you go. We know you didn't miss it.
- 41:46Right? Because I know I shared it with
- 41:48you but in case you hadn't seen Let It Roll.
- 41:52Mr. Siegel will screen time. I want you to make yourself at
- 42:02home and be comfortable with our staff.
- 42:05In our speakers, don't be afraid to ask questions to interject.
- 42:10We want you to do that. Well, it's always been a special
- 42:13place and I think there's a connection when you meet these
- 42:16coaches, just family. Who is that guy?
- 42:20Who's that guy? Yeah yeah, yeah I got to To meet
- 42:35coach pry Hill story because maybe 10 minutes after we got
- 42:40there, if it was that much we came in and we went through a
- 42:44registration and soon as we registered coach, crook grab
- 42:48both of them and we've like, come on guys, you got to you got
- 42:50to go meet coach cry. He said he said I've been
- 42:53telling them about you guys and that you guys were coming.
- 42:58And so, I mean, he took us right back there that hand in the side
- 43:02there, right in front of Kentucky, that's a coach Kerr.
- 43:06He's standing right there with us.
- 43:07He took us right back there. I mean, we barely even
- 43:10registered, and he took us right back, and like he said, we had,
- 43:14they had, that connection coach will take you playing at
- 43:17Glanville, coach prize. Mother had even gone the
- 43:22Glanville or taught at Glenville.
- 43:24I can't remember what he said, but they had that connection at
- 43:28and that's when he was telling us he goes, you know, he said, I
- 43:30was excited to meet you coach. And he said that from what I And
- 43:36we've all kicked some of the same dirt and I kind of like
- 43:39that saying, I'm going to keep that one Mubarak for him a
- 43:42little bit but he was very down to earth.
- 43:45I mean a great dude he anything we needed he said feel free to
- 43:52go anywhere you want and call us if you need anything he gave us
- 43:56all this phone number and everything so if he has anything
- 43:59we need he said he's ready to give us whatever we could do to
- 44:03help us. It was Very much like the last
- 44:10time or two that I went to Virginia Tech and and that was
- 44:14before the last regime was their last game.
- 44:18I went to I think was Beamers last season we were, we were
- 44:24actually coach will take you and I went we were actually guest of
- 44:29we went with our basketball coach at the time we were guests
- 44:32or coach Greenberg's and we were In a box with Bruce Smith,
- 44:38that's a big human being by the way.
- 44:42I don't advise a Virginia Tech game from a box.
- 44:45You don't get that same feeling. I was I was more than It was
- 44:52more than generous to have me there for that.
- 44:54But I think I'll take my chances down any crowding and enjoying
- 44:58the, the loudness it was a little quiet, little too quiet
- 45:01in that box for me. But what we're talking about,
- 45:04you know, listening to Robbie talk, man and I know a lot of us
- 45:08fans and Twitter users. We do a lot of talking about,
- 45:14you know, I we doing this or what does this mean, why are you
- 45:16doing this? Why did it staff doing this and
- 45:18things like that. But when you hear, Coach talks
- 45:21about all he remembered us. He's we ran into him a couple
- 45:25times talking about Coach crook. He remembered us and he took us
- 45:28straight to the head coach and being the head coach
- 45:31reciprocates. What?
- 45:33You've already heard from the coach that, you know, that's a
- 45:36relationship. You know?
- 45:39And people that do what Robbie does, now I'm in sales and we
- 45:46read people to but that those coaching Networks I won't went
- 45:51to school to be a physical education, and special
- 45:56education, teacher and so a lot of my in football, you know,
- 46:01baseball basketball, all that stuff.
- 46:03Those networks are very, very close, you know, and those
- 46:06people can tell when that stuff is real and when it's just
- 46:10fabricated. So to hear somebody, you know,
- 46:14gives a give us an inside, look of what you've been going
- 46:17through and what you've seen and then again, everybody In this,
- 46:21the man said his last game that he was there last time him and
- 46:26his coach was there was when bhima was there.
- 46:29Man, we went some years. What?
- 46:32We've been missing. Some people, we've been missing
- 46:34some schools and it ain't just gonna come overnight because
- 46:39certain schools may have a 4 star athlete that can make a
- 46:43difference at your program once every 10 years.
- 46:47But if you ain't checking in with them, people every year,
- 46:50you're going to miss That player and that's what we've been
- 46:52doing. You know what, why are we going
- 46:54now? Why does he know him?
- 46:55And why is he shaking hands with them?
- 46:57Because you they may not have somebody, they school.
- 46:59They may say, hey coach, we played this kid, the Robbie can
- 47:02tell us this hey we played this kid at Bumfuck and he's the best
- 47:07I've ever seen. Y'all need to go check him out.
- 47:10You know. Now I know that we got some
- 47:12players that may be going to J mu, or we may have some players
- 47:16just going to, you know, Norfolk State but we played this kid and
- 47:20he He's a Virginia Tech player, he's a powerful I put it so.
- 47:25Well as coaching networks is what I feel like the staff has
- 47:28been trying to build yet in fans get so impatient even myself,
- 47:35you get so impatient because you thinking like, oh, he's in our
- 47:38backyard, we should get him. It don't work like that.
- 47:41It just don't product. Hadn't been what we've done
- 47:43that, if we don't have a relationships to say, hey, we
- 47:47deserve this, this 4 star 5 Star kids.
- 47:50So, again, that's just a Lil Bit of a rant, but I'll let Robbie
- 47:53go back from kind of touch on that a little bit longer.
- 47:55I'll say this to, you can't be a man or Worse program and not
- 47:59have relationships in your backyard.
- 48:03Like if you if you if you don't build those relationships like
- 48:06you need to you better damn well be an NFL Factory and put up 10
- 48:10wins every year and we haven't been that program.
- 48:13Nope. So that's kind of where it
- 48:15starts. I mean I know Robbie could speak
- 48:17to this because he coached there as well but you know, looking at
- 48:21It, the county next door to where we grew up and about every
- 48:25four or five years stud, there was a stunt or too kind of
- 48:31coming out of that area. And I don't think it can work in
- 48:34the recent years, we've been in the gwas or the day in rivers or
- 48:39the Martinsville is or the EC glasses though.
- 48:44So I mean, you can't just say okay, well well they only give
- 48:48us a decent player, every four or five years.
- 48:51Ears and ignore them until that guy pops.
- 48:54Can't do it. Don't work that way.
- 48:56And that's a painting. Like this.
- 48:59This is not anything against our guys here.
- 49:02We have nothing to offer, Virginia Tech.
- 49:05I don't, I don't have a player on that roster.
- 49:07Anywhere, they can play their, I don't, but that relationship,
- 49:12and those things, like, if I've got a kid at this, there's a kid
- 49:16at the school, you know, next door to us that I think can play
- 49:21at that level. I'll call a coach about that
- 49:24kid, because as far as I'm concerned, yeah, I'll promote
- 49:27our kids, but I'm about promoting kids to the next
- 49:32level. The next School.
- 49:35Sirs. Get like some, some people
- 49:39outside of coaching. Don't understand that concept we
- 49:42had when I was in Greenville, we had our biggest rival.
- 49:47You know, teams would come there and be like, hey, we're looking
- 49:49for tight end. We don't run a tight end, but
- 49:53this school over here and that school over there.
- 49:57They both have really good tight ends.
- 49:58You might want to go check out. I mean, I have again we're
- 50:04building the relationship. With a coach right here.
- 50:07And because we're into the same thing, we're in the helping kids
- 50:12Advance, it's not about what I can provide for him from my
- 50:16players, because my players right now can't go there.
- 50:19Now, my players five years ago, I'm, I could have seen him a
- 50:22couple, right? But you're we're not there yet.
- 50:25We're rebuilding the program and we're coming into things.
- 50:29Dear Viola has three years and we've We've now put, we put
- 50:37together two and five season in the shortened spring we put
- 50:41together a three and seven season.
- 50:43The first year, I was here full-time and then last year we
- 50:46went seven and three can you went to the playoffs?
- 50:49Yeah. When he went to the playoffs,
- 50:51admit that sound like a Virginia Tech trajectory to me.
- 51:19finally getting to talk to you and hear a perspective of
- 51:23somebody who is doing this, you know, because we sit around and
- 51:28we talk about it all day, we sit around and we tweet about it all
- 51:31day, but to hear the perspective of somebody who was in this,
- 51:35Field, who is doing this? Who sees this?
- 51:38This is what their lifestyle is. This is what the livelihood is,
- 51:41it just it's good, man. It's good to hear again
- 51:45switching. You know, pivoting a little bit.
- 51:47We've talked about prior, we've talked about crook, we know you
- 51:51got a long relationship with him so you can't give us.
- 51:53Can't give us anything on them. Other other staff members other
- 51:59coaches that impressed you at the clinic who you got.
- 52:06Coach a Boeing was with I didn't get to sit down and listen to
- 52:10him. Be coach will take it.
- 52:13I'm a defensive coordinator. I stuck a little bit more to the
- 52:16defensive side of the ball. I listened to some of the
- 52:18offensive stuff when I got a chance here.
- 52:21And there, I listen to coach Cook Top and some things like
- 52:24that, but just talking to coach Bowen. dad, you know, he's got
- 52:33He's got kind of that Mad Hatter feel that I used to get when I
- 52:36talked to Coach Leach, he's, he's very intelligent.
- 52:42He's very, um, Barry on top of the game and, and being able to
- 52:47be creative and do some things and think about things in a
- 52:52little bit different light. And I Got the Feelin him going
- 52:55to that quarterback room. He's going to be able to relay
- 52:58that through the person that's going to make that offense.
- 53:00Run a little bit better than he may have.
- 53:03Then he may have been from a different position last year.
- 53:08I think that's going to be a big thing and mr.
- 53:13Connor talked about it earlier coach Prelude.
- 53:18Man, that man is a spark plug and he was one of my favorite
- 53:36players when I was younger, watching these teams, but to
- 53:40meet him and to get to see him in action and coaching was very
- 53:45impressive. Some of the other guys II new
- 53:52coach because Jim, yeah, he's you know, his Concepts and the
- 54:00things he does is nothing new to me.
- 54:04I got to see those things and a whole new light and that was
- 54:09pretty cool to see you. Again, it kind of reinvigorates
- 54:12me as a coach and a time where I kind of need to push forward a
- 54:16little bit. Because here we have a much
- 54:19smaller School. Football is a thing that we
- 54:22start again really during the summer, we don't get a lot of
- 54:25work in during the spring because you know with with 500
- 54:29kids at the school, all of our athletes are playing other
- 54:32sports every season so it's hard to bring them in and do our
- 54:35spring stuff here. We're trying we're doing some
- 54:39things, we're getting some younger kids out doing things
- 54:42but it ones we're counting on the most are playing baseball
- 54:46and running track. And doing things like that which
- 54:49will never ask them not to do, right?
- 54:52Well, you're doing something right.
- 54:53You say you went from one 3 in 3 and 8 to 7 and 3.
- 54:56Is there any that right 73? So you doing something right?
- 55:00Keeping them keeping it together.
- 55:02So, keep doing what you're doing.
- 55:06Hold on. You just mentioned some you
- 55:08didn't go to the offensive meetings.
- 55:10So did you go talk to Chris and sitting in coach Marv?
- 55:15I did hear coach marra spoke at the way they did it.
- 55:18They split it up at the very beginning.
- 55:21You got to hear coach Foster, which was awesome.
- 55:24I talked to him before, and I had a couple of kids that I
- 55:29coached in Virginia, that they went to Virginia Tech, One
- 55:33stayed there for several years and then transferred to
- 55:36Winston-Salem State. He was a wide receiver and then
- 55:40I had a linebacker that actually played for Coach Foster.
- 55:43And then for for some other reasons he moved on to Morgan
- 55:48State. So I met coach Foster and talk
- 55:52to him before. I had a really good relationship
- 55:54with the old defensive line coach.
- 55:56They are you still got a relationship with Charlie?
- 55:59Yeah. Still do you know what we Coach
- 56:06Price? I had that same relationship
- 56:08because he would be at, he would be at camps and things that I've
- 56:11been to. He recruited that area when he
- 56:13was At JMU, but going back to the clinic the those guys first,
- 56:23those guys spoke first coach Foster and Coach Davis and then
- 56:27it split off. Offensive coordinator spoken,
- 56:30one room, and defensive coordinator spoke in the other
- 56:32room. And so I would get a defensive
- 56:34coordinator room and was much more That's another high-energy
- 56:40individual now. And he is he is focused on being
- 56:47more high energy, being more violent and or not violent but
- 56:52you know him better and getting more pressure and things like
- 56:57that. That was a that was a big thing
- 56:59throughout the entire defensive. Part of the clinic, is they talk
- 57:04about pressure and and attacking and being physical and violent
- 57:11with their arms and attacking thing things that I'd always
- 57:15heard coach Foster talk about. So you can tell that his coach
- 57:20Foster's presence is still there or definitely coming back and
- 57:25they're really pushing some things in those in those ways.
- 57:29I mean, what three of those Those three or four those
- 57:32coaches played for Coach Foster, it's on order.
- 57:36I mean, adibi Prelude, price, price Winslow, we've that time.
- 57:50So I mean you've got connections to that and I think you're going
- 57:54to see more of that physical disruption tight defense and
- 57:59it's really going to pick up the pace.
- 58:01I thought Played fairly well for the most part last year, but
- 58:04it's going to be even, you're going to see, even more this
- 58:06year, especially with some of the athleticism I saw from some
- 58:10of those guys over there. Any way to talk about that in a
- 58:13few minutes here, offensive ly, I snuck into a few things and
- 58:16heard some things, but I kind of stuck the defense a lot of it to
- 58:22see if I could. I could draw something that I
- 58:24could use from for drills and things in practice, even though
- 58:29I run a slightly different defense than what they do.
- 58:32Some drill work with Still Still translate by position.
- 58:36So I can do those types of things.
- 58:38What are you running now? Robbie we run a 33, a stack 33.
- 58:44If you've ever, if you've watched the NC State play in the
- 58:46last couple of years with Coach Gibson, that's it.
- 58:52That's what I run. That's where I've gotten a lot
- 58:54of information from from coach Gibson.
- 58:57He's been a great dude for me He's given me a lot of things.
- 59:03He's helped me out a lot that comes with that connection.
- 59:06I had from Virginia Tech before and and Coach Wiles.
- 59:14So I still keep that connection. We use a lot of those things,
- 59:18but I got two or three drills that we're going to use this
- 59:22summer. And this, this fall out of that,
- 59:24Virginia Tech chalk talk there. A lot of it is about pressure,
- 59:30and, and angles, and things like that.
- 59:32So we're definitely going to use some of it.
- 59:35I got a lot of good stuff out of that.
- 59:37I'm gonna do anything with that 33 stack.
- 59:39You're going to get some pressure with it.
- 59:41So, That's my plan. Good.
- 59:44It's A lot of people look at it, they're like, oh well you don't,
- 59:48you know, this is they run for three, they run a 34.
- 59:53Bottom line is, when you look at the offensive front.
- 59:58There are six gaps. You got a cover?
- 1:00:01You're, you're going to cover it with three linemen and four
- 1:00:04linebackers. I'm going to cover it with four
- 1:00:06linebackers and and three linemen maybe five linebackers
- 1:00:11or three linemen. It's still the same game.
- 1:00:14It's just a matter of Whose line it up where there's a lot of
- 1:00:20similarities. And a lot of it is just plug
- 1:00:22into guys that, you know, their body type and how they play in
- 1:00:26the right places. And I mean they run that 4243
- 1:00:31How are you want to look at it. We just have three down linemen
- 1:00:35this year. We're going to look a lot more
- 1:00:36like a 53 than we were at 35. I mean, it's just a type kids
- 1:00:42that I have around right now. I mean, it's not getting the
- 1:00:49game defensively. Find the ball, tackle, the ball
- 1:00:54where you lined up to start with doesn't really matter.
- 1:00:58So long as, you know, where you going where you started really
- 1:01:00matter. As long as the head, don't
- 1:01:03confuse the feet, right? Yeah that wouldn't goes faulty.
- 1:01:06Used to say all the time like his head is talking to his feet
- 1:01:10way too much. Yeah, I got to get to head to
- 1:01:12shut up. Yeah.
- 1:01:14You don't want to hear talking much on the defensive side, all
- 1:01:18you want? The head saying is ball ball or
- 1:01:20tomorrow? There it is.
- 1:01:25So let's kind of wrap the clinic with The clinic with this thing
- 1:01:29is obviously you had a good time.
- 1:01:30You got to meet all these guys. What will did anybody surprised
- 1:01:34you like? Because you got to meet, not
- 1:01:37only all the coaches. You got to meet support staff.
- 1:01:40I'm assuming trainers at anybody, like surprise you to
- 1:01:44where you think, either like what they're doing.
- 1:01:46Like, okay, they're going to be in a coaching role soon or
- 1:01:50something like that. Just, um, You've got, you've got
- 1:01:56those, you've got the younger coaches analyst, eg a tight kids
- 1:02:02stuff like that. You can tell they're soaking in
- 1:02:05everything they can get with an EB.
- 1:02:09I mean, I watched play. I think he's, I think he's
- 1:02:12working his way to a, to a prominent role.
- 1:02:17I'd love to say it would be staying at Virginia Tech, but
- 1:02:21he's going to he's going to have an opportunity at some point.
- 1:02:25I think and watching him at practice and learning things.
- 1:02:28He's going to have an opportunity to step up within
- 1:02:33the next couple of years. I think he's going to be one.
- 1:02:39It's hard to say that thing that blew my mind.
- 1:02:42The most is how much recruiting has changed.
- 1:02:46And like it changes every year but what they're trying to do
- 1:02:52what they're doing there is they're trying to stay within
- 1:02:56six hours of Blacksburg and they're trying to bring
- 1:02:59everything they can in from the state of Virginia.
- 1:03:03And then anywhere, six hours from there, they're not trying
- 1:03:06to go to Texas to California. Now, if there's kids out there,
- 1:03:11you know, Legacy kids, or somebody like that, that come to
- 1:03:14them, and it's worth So you let him see.
- 1:03:18But they're, they're going to put the feet on the ground.
- 1:03:20We're going to put the coaches in the schools are gonna.
- 1:03:24They're going to do those things in Virginia Carolina.
- 1:03:33I mean you have parts of West Virginia, you have parts of
- 1:03:37Maryland, things like that that you have coaches, that have good
- 1:03:41experience and good relationships with their.
- 1:03:45But they're going to, they're going to build that base within
- 1:03:48that time period of their. And one thing they talk about
- 1:03:51is, you know we can get kids here and their parents can be
- 1:03:54here week in and week out to watch them play.
- 1:03:57We can build relationships with families, we can better
- 1:04:00relationships with schools is places we can get into and we
- 1:04:05can cover as many schools as possible.
- 1:04:09And, you know, in a shorter period of time and that's what
- 1:04:12they're doing. And it's a great thing.
- 1:04:16It's a thing we talked about it, maybe the last, I don't know who
- 1:04:19may be in our production meeting or maybe last show.
- 1:04:22We talked about just players when you have players that are
- 1:04:27Tablet or you know, close to local talent and they go
- 1:04:33somewhere close again. I talked about my son, we hear
- 1:04:38about, he's a baseball player, we hear about a good baseball
- 1:04:41player that plays on our side of town.
- 1:04:43We don't go watch it, you know, eat my son's, a seventh grade.
- 1:04:47If we had. If we know we, it's a kid, he's
- 1:04:49out in the country and he throws.
- 1:04:53He's a seventh grader. Little little left hand, white,
- 1:04:56dude, doesn't Look like much but he's throwing 82, you know, and
- 1:05:01they play on the big boy field now, so it's fret and seventh
- 1:05:05grade, he plays underneath great team, he's a seventh grader.
- 1:05:09So we hear about him coming up here.
- 1:05:11So let's go watch this kid play because he plays on some travel
- 1:05:14teams that will play. So let's go watch.
- 1:05:16This kid play, go back to what we're doing at Virginia.
- 1:05:20Tech people don't mind traveling to see somebody, they know
- 1:05:25that's right, you know if they played Good ball player and got
- 1:05:29them to do on the set on a Saturday.
- 1:05:31May 2 hours away. Oh hey they you know, such and
- 1:05:34said we heard such and such getting the start or from your
- 1:05:38school or I but like people will go and watch a college football
- 1:05:42game. And I don't think that we were
- 1:05:44getting away from that, which I don't, we don't have so much of
- 1:05:47a problem with filling the stadium or we have, it has such
- 1:05:52a problem with filling the stadium, but you'll get there.
- 1:05:54If you're already not putting a good product on the field and
- 1:05:57You're just putting people out there that whatever you know.
- 1:06:01Yeah you got to give some people some stuff to look at.
- 1:06:03You gotta give some some families, some okay.
- 1:06:07It's you know what we doing on Saturday?
- 1:06:09I had a baby is playing, we going to watch it, you know?
- 1:06:12And that's going to get revenue for the city.
- 1:06:15That's going to get revenue for the football team and that's
- 1:06:17going to put fans in the stands and that's the only two players
- 1:06:20hype. So I'm glad that they're trying
- 1:06:22to, you know, read refocus on on building that.
- 1:06:27That that guideline building what they have.
- 1:06:30So I'm excited. We can take ten kids, good
- 1:06:35football, players from Virginia. Bring them to Virginia Tech, and
- 1:06:39that means you can get 10 bands with seven or eight people in
- 1:06:42them to come out to the game. I get ten years from California,
- 1:06:46Texas, and who knows where, hey, bud, about three of those folks
- 1:06:50don't pay that six or seven hundred dollar point, right?
- 1:06:59Filling the stadium because the price we thank you that very
- 1:07:02well year-in and year-out promise.
- 1:07:05But they know they know where their heart and soul is, and
- 1:07:08it's right there at home. Yes.
- 1:07:10We see you. North Carolina that are closer
- 1:07:12than some of their kids in Virginia.
- 1:07:15Yeah, we've got, we had to Mount Airy commits.
- 1:07:17Right now what we are doing with the crystal.
- 1:07:19All the one with the commit. So yeah, got to on the team
- 1:07:22right now that are from just next door, East sir.
- 1:07:26Oh, yeah. Because now boys.
- 1:07:29Yeah, yeah, that's cute. The younger dog smell brother
- 1:07:34was when Caroline County but he moved their senior year, he was
- 1:07:36here. If you're one of the schools,
- 1:07:39have whoops, our tail weekend year in and year out and hearing
- 1:07:43did you see? Did you see the younger guys,
- 1:07:46and Nails in high school, man. Job, I met him here.
- 1:07:50I timed it because his head coach Caroline County.
- 1:07:54The camp. No Carroll County.
- 1:07:56Yeah. Carol Cascade are used to be the
- 1:07:59head coach here. Before we came in heard.
- 1:08:02He already was tough in high school.
- 1:08:04That's a that's a, that's a, that's a big.
- 1:08:06Youngin stuff in high school. Yeah, he's pretty good.
- 1:08:14I've seen some film on him. I'm glad I didn't have to I'm
- 1:08:16glad that he went on to Virginia and played up and I didn't have
- 1:08:20to deal with, you know, fully just that that injury behind
- 1:08:23him, he can make Some impact this year.
- 1:08:24Looking forward to that for sure.
- 1:08:26Absolutely, let's let's move on from the clinic.
- 1:08:30The chalk, talk. We're going to start talking
- 1:08:32some spring game that's coming up this Saturday, but we're
- 1:08:36going to start with the with what came out today.
- 1:08:39We got the format for the spring game, and we'll start with this.
- 1:08:43We will start with what we didn't get.
- 1:08:45So what we didn't get was a white jersey offense, maroon
- 1:08:51Jersey defense, good on good with some Short swaps, we didn't
- 1:08:57get that. I got a little bit of theory
- 1:09:00about that. If you go ahead with it we were
- 1:09:05hoping we were going to maybe get that we were looking to you
- 1:09:07know score whether they kept the score ones versus twos or
- 1:09:11whether they gave defensive scores for things like three and
- 1:09:15outs turnovers or sacks, whatever, whatever they decide
- 1:09:18to do. In terms of keeping score, I
- 1:09:20think we were all. Hoping a little bit to look at
- 1:09:22that. Good on good, but that's It's
- 1:09:24not what we got. What we got was a split roster,
- 1:09:28white maroon like we saw last year on down Curtis.
- 1:09:32We got four quarters with potential, shortened forth
- 1:09:36depending on how the game flows, then game clock in the second
- 1:09:39half running game clock in the second half, but what you get is
- 1:09:43a more game-like flow for the spring game that comes to a
- 1:09:49point where that running clock in the second app is kind of a
- 1:09:52good thing. Alright, so we put the two
- 1:09:57formats out there. I think you already kind of know
- 1:09:59where we're leaning here, but Curtis will start with you,
- 1:10:03because this is your rant. What's your preference?
- 1:10:06Oh my God. Okay, how we're doing it is to
- 1:10:09be the worst possible way you can do the work as my opinion.
- 1:10:14Maybe I'm right? Maybe I'm wrong because what
- 1:10:17people see, thank last year. I buddy be fish talk with him
- 1:10:21today and he's like, I don't remember last year, I'm Like,
- 1:10:23You Remember Jay. Congrats on the resurrection, be
- 1:10:25fish. Yeah.
- 1:10:30This is all I said, do you remember Jason browns offensive
- 1:10:33line last year? It just bringing.
- 1:10:36He didn't have one. It's three Walk-Ons.
- 1:10:38And I felt like it would have broke leg out there.
- 1:10:41I hate this for me, because what we don't get to see is all the
- 1:10:45good players together. We don't get to see them.
- 1:10:48We don't get to see. We talked about Aiden green, a
- 1:10:51couple weeks ago, right? We talked about him with mattei
- 1:10:54and we talked about him with David he was looking out there.
- 1:10:56Looking good with his hands we don't get to say.
- 1:10:59All right. You go play Dorian.
- 1:11:00Strong. Go out there against 44.
- 1:11:03Tallies favorite number in the world.
- 1:11:05It's a slate at me. How good are you as a freshman?
- 1:11:08I don't get to see D Line 1 vs 0 Line 1.
- 1:11:11I don't get to see people jumping up.
- 1:11:13You're right. It isn't be a better game format
- 1:11:16because it's actually a game but reality we Brown.
- 1:11:20We went back a few years ago when we had white versus in the
- 1:11:23room and I felt entertained the whole time.
- 1:11:25I watch it on TV last year, that was not fun to watch.
- 1:11:29I watch it and I enjoy it because I'm like notes on
- 1:11:32players I chatted with you because you're there at the
- 1:11:34game. I just, you know what?
- 1:11:38Brent pry gets everything. But spring game ball.
- 1:11:44Go ahead. They announced today that it was
- 1:11:47going to be Actually, I will throw this at
- 1:12:27you because I think this is where Curtis is coming from.
- 1:12:30If we had a de facto, number one quarterback, I would 100% be on
- 1:12:35board with that, but if we're having a quarterback battle, you
- 1:12:39are handicapped in one of those quarterbacks possible.
- 1:12:45Now, from a coach's perspective, this is coach protect you.
- 1:12:51And I were talking about this earlier.
- 1:12:53If I go out there right now and I say in the spring, These are
- 1:13:00my five best linemen that's going to be my starting five
- 1:13:03group. I'm going to put them out there
- 1:13:04against this. You got kids are behind them.
- 1:13:09In this spring that are going to, they're going to, they're
- 1:13:13only going to react one or two ways.
- 1:13:16It's they think they're better than I am.
- 1:13:19I'm going to go out there and prove that I that I'm not a
- 1:13:22number two behind him or you're going to have your kid that
- 1:13:25goes. Well I'm a number two.
- 1:13:27They already told me in the spring so why keep fighting?
- 1:13:32And they're not looking at that in this spring in my opinion in
- 1:13:37the spring they're analyzing these kids.
- 1:13:41Holy and individually. We're going to find in the fall.
- 1:13:46We're going to find another things when they're going to put
- 1:13:48the best. Boobs together.
- 1:13:50Absolutely, you may have a kid stand up against, you know, the
- 1:13:55tune and be like, okay, well let's move him over here.
- 1:13:58Put him against to, you know what, we get the job done with
- 1:14:07this. Walk over here and right here,
- 1:14:09if he can get the job done with the walk on beside him, you
- 1:14:12know, get the job done with the returning, more kid beside it.
- 1:14:16Yeah, like that. So I do don't it don't bother me
- 1:14:20quite as bad. It might not be as entertaining
- 1:14:23for for the regular person to watch and see, but there's a
- 1:14:27method to I believe that I think you get away it because I think
- 1:14:32it's I think for the very general fan watching something
- 1:14:37in a more game-like format is what they want for any fan of
- 1:14:41that's trying to look for growth or look for ya nuggets that they
- 1:14:46can pull out of the spring game. I feel The format is gives it
- 1:14:50gives you a little bit of a harder time and analyze them
- 1:14:52that because you really have to look at the tape and look at
- 1:14:56those kind of the, the analytics and the player by player
- 1:15:00standpoint, to pull out where the growth is because you're not
- 1:15:05going to see it necessarily as a unit.
- 1:15:07Because I mean we looked at that last year with the line that
- 1:15:11Jason Brown had. I was like, alright, I know we
- 1:15:14definitely don't have any more than five or six lines, Kill
- 1:15:21five, that's it. Anybody gets hurt.
- 1:15:23We screwed. So I guess Squad game or do you
- 1:15:33want one VS1 to vs2 to be man? Honestly, I'm just happy I'm
- 1:15:38going. I'm just want to know what have
- 1:15:40a good time. I hope.
- 1:15:49I don't believe anything. They tell me during the spring
- 1:15:52because you can't really judge it.
- 1:15:54But what I say is the question I have for you and Curtis and
- 1:16:00Brian who were the lineman that was blocking for Jason Brown
- 1:16:03last year, but your house key was one of them.
- 1:16:06He's a walk-on. Okay, sorry, it was.
- 1:16:09Oh, no, it was, no, it was legitimately when they laid it
- 1:16:12out, it was starting center with Wells, starting tackles worth
- 1:16:17Wells, and he had more More and he was supposed to have Hanson
- 1:16:22but Hanson got hurt and Hanson. Skip the game.
- 1:16:26He had Malachi Thomas Malachi was banging.
- 1:16:28Got bang that weekend, was out in part when Parker out for part
- 1:16:32of the game, too. He was, he was out for a game.
- 1:16:35That's why I don't see again, it's not so much and I get
- 1:16:38Robbie. What does I couldn't remember
- 1:16:40why I couldn't remember Lou Brown game.
- 1:16:42Hey, I was hoping y'all was gonna give me a name that
- 1:16:44they're saying it's competing for a starting job this year.
- 1:16:48I think it's So Brown only had one start game one starter.
- 1:16:54Yeah, it is. Yeah, I wasn't the only one game
- 1:16:57we started. We didn't, we didn't so, you
- 1:17:00know, the goal where I be saying Hell, we just didn't have a lot
- 1:17:03last year. It didn't matter how you split
- 1:17:05it up. It's almost a joke with you.
- 1:17:08All right. Now, this isn't a joke, Andrew
- 1:17:10panting, I hope you listening. Whoever has the crappier
- 1:17:13offensive line? We know the number to Porter
- 1:17:16back. Going out of spring, it is
- 1:17:18That's all I'm going to say hi to be determined was obviously a
- 1:17:24conversation been seeing drones in a lot of pictures with Ali
- 1:17:27Jennings and the gas. I'm gonna say that.
- 1:17:30I always say, let's flip it here, let's talk about things
- 1:17:35we're looking for in this game and since we had Tomorrow Connor
- 1:17:40want a better defensive players that we've had over the last 45
- 1:17:42years here. Join us tonight in Robbie, who
- 1:17:45was a defensive coordinator and defensive lack of we're going to
- 1:17:47start Offensively, even though everybody probably wants a
- 1:17:50scholar quarterback but you know, we do what we want and
- 1:17:53let's start with the FIFA defensive line because outside
- 1:17:56quarterback to me. That's the biggest question.
- 1:17:58We've been bringing it up. We've been talking it shooting
- 1:18:00the shit for the last few weeks here about not so much interior,
- 1:18:05but as presidents and Robbie, I'm going to pitch to you first,
- 1:18:08man, when you were down there, anybody catch your, I'd Edge,
- 1:18:15because we, I'm pulling up my mind.
- 1:18:19Make sure numbers have changed some folks.
- 1:18:21Wearing different numbers. I like messing with you.
- 1:18:24I really don't even know, but the defensive end wise we got
- 1:18:33here. The, the one kid that I saw
- 1:18:37that, I thought looked pretty good.
- 1:18:41Was 14 moisten, okay. Okay, I thought he looked.
- 1:18:49He's very athletic. He's long and rangy.
- 1:18:54He's probably going to need to get a little more weight on him,
- 1:18:57but he he's got that long build. He's quick to the edge.
- 1:19:01I think he's gonna, I think he's going to step in and help some.
- 1:19:07And then, who was he, McRae? Okay, crazy, look too bad.
- 1:19:18You think he's put on a little bit more weight?
- 1:19:20Is he kind of getting I know he was more of a he was a
- 1:19:22linebacker that we were kind of turning into a edge rusher last
- 1:19:25year. I would say he was probably
- 1:19:28around 250 260, okay, they will take, he was a diesel of the
- 1:19:32kid. Now granted we were at the
- 1:19:36practice I was at was I think practice.
- 1:19:38Number 5, Okay, makes sense. It was a 25th of March and it's
- 1:19:46a lot of Steel drills and fundamentals, and things like
- 1:19:50that. Another like the second padded
- 1:19:52practice or something like that, it was a second data Graphics.
- 1:19:56So you weren't screw you in a lot of you know, defensive end
- 1:20:01versus offensive, lineman one-on-ones and and stuff like
- 1:20:05that. You're seeing a lot of bag
- 1:20:07drills. And you know No room in the
- 1:20:11hoops and attacking the attacking, the throwing arm
- 1:20:17different, things like that and you could see you could see some
- 1:20:20athleticism to burst from those guys.
- 1:20:23I really saw the defensive end group and in the interior front
- 1:20:30and a linebacker guys, doing things about you know turnovers
- 1:20:36and and batten balls and things like that.
- 1:20:39Okay. That athleticism now going,
- 1:20:42one-on-one and doing stuff like that.
- 1:20:44I didn't see as much of that stuff.
- 1:20:49But you can like I feel like the things that I look at.
- 1:20:55I can see good things out of a lot of those guys.
- 1:20:57They had a freshman there, a kid coming in.
- 1:21:02What was his name? Was the old field or was he know
- 1:21:07he was on the field. He was he was an early enrollee.
- 1:21:12Happy members named defensive line though.
- 1:21:15Defensive end. Yeah.
- 1:21:20Was it 46? It may have been a motive in the
- 1:21:23Canadian kid. I would say he's got his arm in
- 1:21:26a sling. Know it was, but that was when
- 1:21:29David saw him, this could have been before that.
- 1:21:32Yeah. All right.
- 1:21:35It might have been him but they I mean they hit.
- 1:21:38He had they had a couple of younger guys that I think are
- 1:21:43going to get around into something, you know, some some
- 1:21:47red shirt, sophomore, some red shirt freshman and stuff like
- 1:21:49that. You got kids coming in still in
- 1:21:52the fall. They haven't gotten there yet,
- 1:21:54right? They had 128 kids total and 19
- 1:21:58of them there in the fall. I mean, in the spring, 11 came,
- 1:22:01in the spring 11 came with spring-loaded, famous train.
- 1:22:04Be careful transfers. I think it might be almost 19.
- 1:22:07Okay my team is what they say. All right so I mean I think I
- 1:22:13think they're making some strides in the right places and
- 1:22:16it's just going to be how quickly these guys can mature
- 1:22:18and develop you know of course you have your older guys that
- 1:22:22have played some but you've got several kids they're younger and
- 1:22:27all of them were the same kind of build.
- 1:22:30They were that same 6-3 2-6. Five 235 over 6 foot tall.
- 1:22:45Let me ask you this. You kick it next.
- 1:22:49What are y'all looking for on defensively?
- 1:22:52What Robbie saying size and speed, you know, like for me it
- 1:22:58is different you know what I'm saying?
- 1:23:00Because you don't win the game in the first quarter, not a win,
- 1:23:03the game in the second quarter, every now and then you went into
- 1:23:07the third quarter, like you got to have bodies that you can run
- 1:23:10and lean on people. That's why these SEC teams are
- 1:23:13sold by the fourth quarter, they beating teams up that laying on
- 1:23:17them. Georgia is running five
- 1:23:19different guys that you just 300 You know, and we just haven't
- 1:23:23had that, you know, we've had no disrespect to some of the kids
- 1:23:27we had we had some great kids to come in and play hard Griffin
- 1:23:30was a great player for us. You know.
- 1:23:33We can go down the list of hens and even somebody tacos that
- 1:23:37we've had but I am just getting to.
- 1:23:39Yeah. When you just get into the grind
- 1:23:41of a ACC season or football season period, we just again,
- 1:23:46just from a fan perspective going.
- 1:23:48And looking at a game, you'd look at our team and you go,
- 1:23:51man. We so small compared to Georgia
- 1:23:55Tech. I went to Atlanta and watch this
- 1:23:57play. Georgia Tech now.
- 1:23:59They had. What's my man named?
- 1:24:02It transferred Alabama on that team.
- 1:24:04Oh Gibbs. Yeah, they had give him
- 1:24:06attention. Of course.
- 1:24:07He was the he was the best thing on the field.
- 1:24:10We beat them that game, but he look different, but their team
- 1:24:15looked bigger than us, you know, even though we won and I'm sure
- 1:24:18like again, I know we had some, some boys to play hard but as
- 1:24:21far as that, Defensive line goes man a lot of these kids that
- 1:24:25they're bringing in. I just see sighs, you know, and
- 1:24:28I know that when you get out of high school, some of these kids
- 1:24:32are slender. But that's, that's what a weight
- 1:24:35room is for. That's what the nutritionist
- 1:24:37for. So when you look at a kid, the
- 1:24:396-3 6-4, you know, they say 220 or 230. £30.
- 1:24:45He's even gained 15 pounds by going to college period, That's
- 1:24:50The Freshman 15. You don't get that just period.
- 1:24:53So if these kids can throw down and eat and pumps a mind, like
- 1:24:56you can get 30 pounds, you know, you can get 20 pounds, most of
- 1:24:59the time. So I'm just, I'm just thankful
- 1:25:03and interested to see what I actual team looks like with some
- 1:25:08with some size. And I think, you know, the
- 1:25:10speed, of course to you can just be big and slow, but I think a
- 1:25:14lot A lot of these kids that were getting in a lot of this,
- 1:25:16these cleaners in high school, and just like, even looking at
- 1:25:19the kid like McRae, McRae, when he played early in the season,
- 1:25:25he was jumping off the film. To me, he was jumping off the
- 1:25:28screen, he was doing some things.
- 1:25:30Well, he just looked different, and he came from what martial
- 1:25:33arts, what they ain't told him, like he was just such a high
- 1:25:36level guy and I'm like, oh man, he's Alabama, commit know, some
- 1:25:40kids just look different than other kids, you know I'm saying
- 1:25:43and they're going He he just had it.
- 1:25:46So I'm hoping he builds on and I think he had an injury last year
- 1:25:49that kind of derailed some of the stuff he was doing but sighs
- 1:25:54I say is what I'm excited about seeing that you are just running
- 1:25:58from 6 feet tall if you get Dwight Freeney, but I don't
- 1:26:01think we got to wait for any right now.
- 1:26:02Yeah, but yeah, and I mean I'll say this because I mean having
- 1:26:06played against some some guys some guys that played D1 balls
- 1:26:10some guys that you know, I was I played played III, so I played
- 1:26:13two years old. All that level of talent the
- 1:26:16type of player 2 gave me the most trouble wasn't a fast guy.
- 1:26:20That was that was my height or a little bit taller than me.
- 1:26:23It was a guy that was playing about 63 that could have Long
- 1:26:26Reach and leverage could use their hands but also still has
- 1:26:30some quickness to make the play in the backfield that gave me
- 1:26:33fucking it fits. So we're getting longer that's
- 1:26:37going to be a problem for some offensive lineman.
- 1:26:39So I liked that and when you when you see some of the stuff
- 1:26:42they did I know I know People laughed about having that MMA
- 1:26:45guy in, but you talked about it, Robbie with the hand style, like
- 1:26:49two hands fight. We might, if you have guys who
- 1:26:51are long and know how to do that on the defensive line, you're
- 1:26:54going to win battles. I'm going to Pivot off here in a
- 1:26:56second, but I won't. I'm interested to see one thing,
- 1:26:59and y'all boys that are going there.
- 1:27:02You got to watch it, tell me where flood area, Spain lines
- 1:27:05up. I just be put him a defensive
- 1:27:07tackle, but everything in my, he's number zero, Robbie 63
- 1:27:11degrees, 70 pounds, I'm I stood to see if they're going to play
- 1:27:15him at like a five Tech play a big n because the guy played
- 1:27:19Edge. He played engine Nebraska was
- 1:27:22brought in to the edge last year.
- 1:27:23He blew his Achilles out, you know, in the early part of the
- 1:27:26summer, I'm interested, you know, they put it in D tackle,
- 1:27:29all of a sudden were to stack their, we got six deep.
- 1:27:33Now, I'm wondering if they're going to play him like a 5 Tech
- 1:27:37and say, play Big end having Lawson and Jenkins who will talk
- 1:27:41about that group in the second. It's possible.
- 1:27:45But there's a, there's a trend right now couple and I all the
- 1:27:49football In and it started with Aaron Donald those big athletic.
- 1:27:58Just little bit smaller defensive ends playing that
- 1:28:02three technique. I know I've got one that play
- 1:28:07for me in high school, we played it in Sea State, he played
- 1:28:10defensive end at NC State for a vast majority of his career and
- 1:28:16he got to the league in San Francisco.
- 1:28:17Moved him to a three techniques they did it's three he's 280
- 1:28:22pounds and he runs a 45 640. He I mean, unfortunately that he
- 1:28:30went to the Saints last year and I hate to say it, he just signed
- 1:28:35with the Eagles last week that kills me.
- 1:28:57If something goes bad, they can slide him right back out there.
- 1:29:00He's got plenty of experience in that situation.
- 1:29:03Good boy, you know, you get teams that have that, that tight
- 1:29:08end, you know, double tight set the protein style, double kite,
- 1:29:13you know, they'll load two tight ends on one side or something
- 1:29:15like that. He can play that five technique.
- 1:29:18And pray that that, you know, interior type lineman against
- 1:29:24that kind of stuff, he's going to be a valuable asset there.
- 1:29:28But I it's I'm trying to think of Like so many of the drills
- 1:29:33they did was about pressure and moving I can't remember which
- 1:29:37group he was with. It was a defensive line, the
- 1:29:41interior lineman, or the or the ends though.
- 1:29:45I think he's going to be a pretty.
- 1:29:46He's definitely going to be a presence on all of them.
- 1:29:48No, big deal here, man. I let slip over a little bit.
- 1:29:51Let's just, let's just talk a little bit about the linebacker
- 1:29:53and I know I think this is a room.
- 1:29:54We all feel good about my interest in peace is with j.r.
- 1:29:59Walker leaving. We mentioned it last week who's
- 1:30:02Going to end up being the backup because we me and Brian we
- 1:30:05talked last year about Walker and Jenkins.
- 1:30:08That's a great one-two. Combo.
- 1:30:09You don't lose all the anything. Walk comes off, Walker's gone.
- 1:30:13So we do not have a primary backup.
- 1:30:15He came out text sideline. I think, I'm not sure if it was
- 1:30:18day that R&D, but Prime engine, they're moving, Jalen whole over
- 1:30:21to Nickel saying that's an interesting development because,
- 1:30:26you know, that tells a lot when we talked about last week with
- 1:30:29the safeties. So I'll go to you.
- 1:30:33I think I know what you're going to say.
- 1:30:34It involves the big imposition. But what are you looking at,
- 1:30:38Saturday? I mean I'm looking primarily at
- 1:30:42Mike, be honest. Because I feel like because I
- 1:30:47feel like the starters at the other two spots are going to be
- 1:30:51sod and I feel like the depth will more or less work itself
- 1:30:54out. I need to know who's standing in
- 1:30:56the middle of that defense who's getting those calls and who's
- 1:31:01going to be one of the primary guys that's going to help us in
- 1:31:04the Run game. That's what I'm concerned about.
- 1:31:07I want to see who that guy is going to be.
- 1:31:09Is it going to be an undersized? Is Tisdale is he's jaded?
- 1:31:12Keller coming on? Is it going to be somebody that
- 1:31:14isn't even on the roster yet? You know, that's kind of what
- 1:31:19I'm looking at. So, Mike is my biggest concern
- 1:31:21because I feel like some of that depth will take care of itself
- 1:31:24with some additional practice. Well, thank you.
- 1:31:26Thank you know, most people are probably thinking the same thing
- 1:31:29and looking at the same thing because most of the time Mike is
- 1:31:34That's the quarterback on defense.
- 1:31:37You know what I'm saying? That's the one who's making the
- 1:31:38calls most of the time. That's the one who's getting
- 1:31:40people lined up. So that person uses got to be a
- 1:31:44leader. That person's usually got to
- 1:31:46know a lot of stuff. So like Brian said, it's like
- 1:31:50interested to see who will be putting in that position because
- 1:31:54we feel like some of the other depth is going to play out fine,
- 1:31:57but that position in it's got to be a run stopper, you know and
- 1:32:02football is evolving. This person, it's a lot of stuff
- 1:32:05that goes into it. Are they going to be side to
- 1:32:07side? Are they going to be able to
- 1:32:08just anchor down the middle? What are we, what are we going
- 1:32:10to have there? So I don't know, man.
- 1:32:13And then it's just like, when being a left, I mean, we've had
- 1:32:17that stand for fucking ten years.
- 1:32:19So, it's just like, what are you pivoting?
- 1:32:21Go to, you know, what I'm saying?
- 1:32:22Whether he's good or bad in your eyes, you knew okay, he's in
- 1:32:27this spot, you know, now you got to make a change.
- 1:32:31It's like, are we going for? This is Stood, the look that
- 1:32:34we're going for? Are we going for this?
- 1:32:37I don't know. And it always seems like in
- 1:32:41Virginia Tech. That's you go in season after
- 1:32:44season and it was almost like, well, we know who to my kids.
- 1:32:48Yeah, yep. Ain't always been that way.
- 1:32:50I mean it's you've had the halls and like you said, Holly feels
- 1:32:59been there. Ten, damn years before him.
- 1:33:02There was A magical. Yeah, but it was the, you have
- 1:33:10some consistency there? You never kind of look the same.
- 1:33:13They kind of look the same. They kind of look the same.
- 1:33:15You knew what they were going to give you?
- 1:33:17Yeah, you do that. I mean even though they had
- 1:33:19their limitations, dang Richard, but you knew what they were
- 1:33:22going to give you and we know the guys going to give you, it's
- 1:33:26a hell of a lot easier to figure out what you can do around them,
- 1:33:28right? Robbie, I know you going down to
- 1:33:31the smaller school. Now, you know, I know what This
- 1:33:33can get me because you mention, I remember you mentioned last
- 1:33:36year. I've got this one kid, he can do
- 1:33:38everything. What do I go?
- 1:33:40You were talking about what you were going to probably do with
- 1:33:42him that year because whatever I do with him.
- 1:33:46I've got to put him in the best spot and now we're sitting here.
- 1:33:50We don't have that but to the point that we're kind of making
- 1:33:54with Jenkins and Lawson in the depth behind them is for the
- 1:33:58first time a long time. We have to make a decision in my
- 1:34:01but you're talking about on the outside.
- 1:34:03It's not to me. It's not earth shattering,
- 1:34:06right? It's not.
- 1:34:07Like because we saw lossing, come on Lawson's, game Lawson's
- 1:34:11of freak. Could he be a TV?
- 1:34:13Maybe that is a high standard. Live up to could he be Evelyn's
- 1:34:17baby? High standard but some of the
- 1:34:19stuff he did and those last three, four games, like you're
- 1:34:22watching her cry and you got to watch some of the tape and it's
- 1:34:24just like, oh shit. Well I'm gonna be okay.
- 1:34:28If he gets consistent with, with his technique he's going to be a
- 1:34:33problem because he's got all the length and athleticism in the
- 1:34:36world are for sale. A lot of the stuff that he did
- 1:34:38came from link. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:34:40We go back to the defensive line when you're When you're watching
- 1:34:46a game as a average fan, you're just thinking either this person
- 1:34:50down our tackle or they didn't. But when you watch the game with
- 1:34:53somebody like Brian and watch the game with somebody like
- 1:34:55Robbie, you know, you're looking for other stuff that's going on
- 1:34:59on on in the trenches. Are these guys getting their
- 1:35:02hands up because if you got Lyman is getting our hands up
- 1:35:06and getting into throwing lines that gets in the quarterbacks
- 1:35:09head and they don't have that. We it's a lot of time in the
- 1:35:13recent past that we Hey at people get the hands up in
- 1:35:16throwing Lanes, you make can't get to the quarterback sometimes
- 1:35:20but when you got somebody like Kelly Lawson this what is he 65?
- 1:35:25You know, when he can't get there when he can't get there
- 1:35:29and he can put his hands up. Yeah.
- 1:35:31It's going to it's going to impede some stuff that the
- 1:35:33quarterbacks trying to do you know I think maybe have at it he
- 1:35:36had a tip pick one one. Yeah right yeah yeah yeah that
- 1:35:40is just length and athleticism. You don't say About this because
- 1:35:46we talked about open field, we talked about in line blocking
- 1:35:49and I was talking earlier, we were talking about the line L.
- 1:35:51Length is a problem. Length is a problem at the
- 1:35:54second level 2 because if I can't get my face across you and
- 1:35:59get into your pads, I'm gonna have a problem blocking you.
- 1:36:03Hmm. Yeah.
- 1:36:06And somebody with that type of length and that type of speed
- 1:36:09that's going to create problems for Lyman and tight ends getting
- 1:36:12to that second level. Because if you got, if you got a
- 1:36:16lime in this coming to wash you out, and you're able to use your
- 1:36:21hands to keep him at Bay and have this outside hand.
- 1:36:24Free and somebody's coming on the outside.
- 1:36:26You still can grab, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:36:28That comes the towel drills, can you get them down?
- 1:36:31You know what I'm saying? Different things like that.
- 1:36:33But at the same time, it's if you don't have it, you don't
- 1:36:37have it. If you don't got a 7-foot
- 1:36:39wingspan, yes ain't got it, I'm saying you either got that on
- 1:36:43you know. So, just like in the recent,
- 1:36:47man, we haven't had a lot of athletes that I'm seeing.
- 1:36:53I watched a little bit of stuff and went back and watched a
- 1:36:56little bit more film because I kept hearing the name most
- 1:37:00Phillips. You know, then Cunningham came
- 1:37:03on and talked about him. Yeah.
- 1:37:04Just his healing ability and then I turned on the tape and
- 1:37:07I'm like yeah this kid wasn't ranked until Signing Day and
- 1:37:13then they give him what 84 Five, whatever he gets, you know,
- 1:37:16normal stuff and you know regular fans, we don't pay
- 1:37:19attention to it. Then you turn on the table.
- 1:37:21He said, yeah, this man is coming downhill.
- 1:37:23He's hit when he's a legit, you know, 61-62, coming from those
- 1:37:27positions in Hidden, that's much different people don't
- 1:37:31understand. 61-62 coming downhill is different than 510
- 1:37:35511, just because of the, the area that you're covering.
- 1:37:39So I don't know, man. I'm, I've been preaching in a
- 1:37:43long time. Just Sighs.
- 1:37:45And you know, that's not don't just get us out of every, hold
- 1:37:49it with your hand but it looks good.
- 1:37:52I like to see it. I'm excited about it as far as
- 1:37:55the linebackers go. I think you got a bright future
- 1:37:58with Jenkins Lawson. I mean well, Jenkins is the
- 1:38:05older one? Yeah, Keller Lawson Kellerman.
- 1:38:10I think I think it looks. I mean you got three guys out
- 1:38:14there that are younger there that are doing good things and
- 1:38:18they're going to be the future of that room and Jenkins is just
- 1:38:23going to help them all. Get ready for it.
- 1:38:24Yeah, I mean but well one of the are own 16-6, three or more?
- 1:38:32Yes, they are. We did he was a linebacker,
- 1:38:37right? It's like they trying to build a
- 1:38:38prototype for the linebackers here, Virginia, anger, if you
- 1:38:42ain't sick, the a 63. You ain't asked me which was a
- 1:38:46tackling machine but he was 5 5, 10 5, 10 grew and matured Walker
- 1:38:54was the same way please. Save my wife.
- 1:39:03What are you play, basketball? All right.
- 1:39:18Let's hit. Probably the room that we
- 1:39:19probably ain't worried about none and that's defensive backs.
- 1:39:23I mean I think it's the solid five starting.
- 1:39:27Are we feeling more and more when you hear Hoyles moving and
- 1:39:31we hear what David said about. Phillips, and Jones looking
- 1:39:34good? You feel like that rooms coming
- 1:39:36together? I mean I feel like we're all
- 1:39:40going to look at just because it's defensive backs and you see
- 1:39:42them on every play. You see him moving around but I
- 1:39:47mean I'm going into this week with this between Stroman
- 1:39:50between people canteen, you my missing, strong brand names for
- 1:39:56Pantene, where you got that canteen.
- 1:39:59He's in teen is from what I could see through drills and
- 1:40:06everything he is. Leading everything like he's the
- 1:40:11voice, the heartbeat, the inspiration that go after
- 1:40:15things. I mean he is to be a transfer
- 1:40:21coming in. Uh-huh.
- 1:40:23Step into that role. Like you can tell.
- 1:40:26He's he's there to improve everything.
- 1:40:30He is there to to show people the energy and the passion
- 1:40:36you've got to have. He matches coach Prelude,
- 1:40:39passion at practice and the way things were going that day.
- 1:40:44I mean, he's just he's just that he's always giving the younger
- 1:40:49guys. Information.
- 1:40:51He's always talking about the things they can do and how
- 1:40:54they're going to have to practice and in that In that
- 1:40:59group and those DVDs, the safety is in Corners, pray lose the
- 1:41:07energy and Coach Jones is the is the inspiration and they always
- 1:41:15talk about cheetahs. Well that's not about just being
- 1:41:19fast and doing things like a cheetah.
- 1:41:21It's a way of life for Coach Jones and those guys back there
- 1:41:27and those guys are living it, man.
- 1:41:29And Canteen to putting it to the front.
- 1:41:31You do things right? You do things the way they're
- 1:41:33supposed to be done. You do it with the effort.
- 1:41:36And I mean he's we all talked about it the last show about how
- 1:41:40somebody had to step up and Lead this group right now.
- 1:41:43It looks like canteen is the guy doing that?
- 1:41:46Well, I'm even just go ahead and I guess the one that we feel
- 1:41:50like has the best selling out all those people.
- 1:41:52Probably the youngest guy, which is Monsoor, but we need even
- 1:41:57touched on tweening touched on strowman.
- 1:41:59In people's like they've been that group is deep man and
- 1:42:04that's not something that is much different, as some big
- 1:42:07individuals for the be playing that DB room, you know what I'm
- 1:42:10saying? Like, everybody six me don't get
- 1:42:12better. Yeah, and it's just getting it.
- 1:42:15And I've heard a lot about Cartman.
- 1:42:16Just him coming in as a freshman.
- 1:42:19And like I said, I don't know how much burn he gets, just
- 1:42:23maybe at DB or safety or whatever that putting him.
- 1:42:26But if he's coming in and he's pushing Those guys and he's
- 1:42:30given good looks and he can get in on on special teams.
- 1:42:35And I said that's a nice-size kid coming in at 62 63 straight
- 1:42:40out of high school, ready to go. You know we don't have to put
- 1:42:45you don't have to put height of weight on it height or weight on
- 1:42:48him, he's got it watching watching some film and some
- 1:42:53highlights and stuff like that. The Woodson kid.
- 1:42:59Oh, you know everybody we talked little talk to the white.
- 1:43:03We talk to the white Vic, a couple of weeks ago and what
- 1:43:06he's been saying for probably a year now to me just massive guy
- 1:43:11got that choose going to step in for Jenkins when he steps off.
- 1:43:15That's here. That's what I'm talking about
- 1:43:18him right now. Whoo.
- 1:43:20Alright and so much to me. Yeah, I was I was I was watching
- 1:43:24that show with Wanted white. Yeah, I agree with him 100%
- 1:43:29about Woodson. Now that he is going to be a key
- 1:43:33is going to be a missing. Love it, love it!
- 1:43:36I love it. I love it.
- 1:43:39Okay. You won't have to worry about
- 1:43:41that DB and safety room. I will tell you what, the that
- 1:43:44they're deep, some of them are young, but I think they, I think
- 1:43:49some of them young ones are going to be able to play now.
- 1:43:51Yeah, I think so as well, you're gonna you're gonna have a
- 1:43:54problem there. We having so many.
- 1:43:57Yeah. And figuring out how to get
- 1:44:00enough of them on the field at the time.
- 1:44:01Well that ain't never a problem. Much of a good, many good
- 1:44:05football. Players is a good problem to
- 1:44:07have not agree. Be you, baby.
- 1:44:14I'm just excited to see this group, your back out there,
- 1:44:17excited to see what canteen brings on the field, because
- 1:44:20we've heard all the great stuff. He's bringing off the field.
- 1:44:23So I'm just looking forward to checking out what they can do.
- 1:44:26And seeing how that depth, at safety, kind of develops there
- 1:44:29with some of the new guys like Phillips and then mixing in
- 1:44:33Jalen Jones, which sides the fall.
- 1:44:35So, I'm excited about all of it. I like I said, I feel pretty
- 1:44:38good about that room as a whole. All right, so Brian what we
- 1:44:40talking about next week on quarterbacks quarterbacks
- 1:44:46quarterbacks quarterbacks well when it does that,
- 1:45:00Protected by somebody ain't never heard of well we had last
- 1:45:04year we had a guest, I think I guess ODU we had stopped for a
- 1:45:08loss of this plan by receiving the name so you might need to
- 1:45:11pay attention, whatever his name was it jumped offsides compared
- 1:45:20to what was there last year? Yeah, both you might have two or
- 1:45:25three quarterbacks that have at least one or two to throw to.
- 1:45:45And you talk about the just say the three transfers to come in,
- 1:45:49right? Well, if they're playing, did
- 1:45:52you see What the guys did was there last year that they raved
- 1:45:54about during spring as well. You got Christian Moss, you got
- 1:45:59guys on Holloway you got Gosnell.
- 1:46:03Yeah so that's six in the end. We've heard freshman we've heard
- 1:46:0918 greens name mentioned you know so that's you want while
- 1:46:14we're talking about that. Let's talk about the X Factor
- 1:46:16Daquan. Right?
- 1:46:16That's cool. I hate it.
- 1:46:27People interesting matchups because we're not used to having
- 1:46:32any depth and I'm not saying we got so much right now but I can
- 1:46:36tell you mine's did a good job with that with that wide
- 1:46:39receiver room just perception-wise.
- 1:46:42You know we don't know how it's going how it's going to pan out
- 1:46:45because that's why we play the game but looking at what he did
- 1:46:49to go and fix that wide receiver room. it's totally different
- 1:46:53than what we seen last year just from Ha look at things whenever
- 1:46:57somebody talks to me about football or even when we have
- 1:47:01basketball debates or something. Yeah.
- 1:47:04And they say, what was this person better than this person?
- 1:47:06Or this person does this? And this does that person like
- 1:47:11just said, we're talking basketball, does that person
- 1:47:12change the perception of what the NBA is?
- 1:47:15You talk about Allen Iverson, he did some stuff that nobody else
- 1:47:18could do in the NBA. I don't know if he's better than
- 1:47:20this person or that person, but they changed the dress code
- 1:47:23because of, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:47:25You talk about Michael Vick, he changed.
- 1:47:27What people thought a quarterback was.
- 1:47:30You know what I'm saying? So go back down to the level.
- 1:47:32We're talking about. If I'm on the defensive side of
- 1:47:36the ball do I have to game plan for you?
- 1:47:39Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:47:40I think you do. I think it shows.
- 1:47:41Yeah, absolutely. Probably.
- 1:47:42And do I got a game plan for Ali Jennings?
- 1:47:45Its first game, not seeing nothing.
- 1:47:48Do I got a game plan for him? Damn, right.
- 1:47:50I think I do. Do I have to game plan for from
- 1:47:54Wayne? Godwin, what 160mm for catches
- 1:47:59against Miami. Do I have to game plan for a 65
- 1:48:02receiver? Yeah, it's got a big body in
- 1:48:05Felton. Didn't nobody knows anything
- 1:48:07about? I think you do and that's not,
- 1:48:10that's not even seeing anything and didn't even like Tucker
- 1:48:14Holloway. You know, we, we, we don't know
- 1:48:18everything he can do, but we know he returned a kick as a
- 1:48:21freshman, I got some wiggle in the guy who does it look like.
- 1:48:24And he look like, My son sighs. So I'm excited about having some
- 1:48:36Playmakers on offense, because I think when we look back for last
- 1:48:39year, Most teams looked at us and we had so many injuries and
- 1:48:44they said, okay, when they put this tight in in, they're going
- 1:48:49to try to throw him the ball because he had blocking much
- 1:48:52he's using in the kitch. And then they got the big kid
- 1:48:55out, which was Caleb Smith, that they're going to try to throw a
- 1:48:59jump ball two? Yeah, that's it.
- 1:49:01And that's what we had on offense.
- 1:49:04So when we, when we go back and talk about again, I hate to keep
- 1:49:10bringing it up but when we talk about it, you had talked about
- 1:49:13the grant way of saying, I understand what that offense
- 1:49:16was. I'd never said, I offense was
- 1:49:18great. I just feel like if he went in
- 1:49:22and some but I don't think people had the game plan for
- 1:49:24Grant Wells. That's the problem for me last
- 1:49:27year. Now I think the kid is going to
- 1:49:29make some strides. I think he's going to be a great
- 1:49:31backup quarterback for thank you.
- 1:49:34Well, Robbie Robbie Robbie told us some last night we know Grant
- 1:49:38Wells has a strong right Brian right?
- 1:49:40Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:49:41But Bobby you said when you saw drone, throw that ball and went
- 1:49:44huh? Yeah.
- 1:49:46Goes times loose now. Getting back few, you've got a
- 1:49:52key. You've got a kid and Grant
- 1:49:54Wells. Who is has experience and I
- 1:50:02better play, he's going to get the opportunity.
- 1:50:06You're not going to be some you shouldn't be surprised when it
- 1:50:09comes Saturday. He's going to get the
- 1:50:11opportunity to go out there with the first group.
- 1:50:14He's going to get the opportunity to play.
- 1:50:16He's going to get the opportunity to lose that job.
- 1:50:21That's what, that's what he's gonna get, because he, I think
- 1:50:25he's going to be honest. I think he's going to take the
- 1:50:26field this year with possibly a combination of six.
- 1:50:32Different wide receivers that are outside of one above
- 1:50:39anything they had last year. Six, different receivers Bill
- 1:50:44Smith is probably the only one they could stand in the in those
- 1:50:48six. And he at least be a to, in this
- 1:50:51group, maybe a 3 in, I mean, I've only been coaching football
- 1:50:59a little while, but you ain't going to put six receivers only
- 1:51:02field at the time right before out there and then bring three
- 1:51:07or four more in afterwards. And things change up.
- 1:51:11Wells is Wills has to look better with that on the field by
- 1:51:16proxy. It's how much better but don't
- 1:51:21get it twisted. I don't think anybody's gonna be
- 1:51:26surprised when I say this, but drones is more of an athlete
- 1:51:30than great. Whales is right there.
- 1:51:33Shot is going to force you to Game Plan.
- 1:51:38Nothing that you've seen in the past from great.
- 1:51:41Wales is making you gain point. Now after the first three games
- 1:51:47if for some reason he's the guy that they give the ball to to
- 1:51:51start the season, he may be a guy, you have to game plan for
- 1:51:54because of what they put around him now.
- 1:51:58But I know drones is going to be a guy.
- 1:51:59You can have to game plan for because that is a, that is a
- 1:52:03bigger different kind of guy. He's a little, he's not as big
- 1:52:08as some of the guys. They've had a quarterback in the
- 1:52:10past, but he's big enough and I think they haven't listened to
- 1:52:14what 62? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:52:16That kid. Biggest 16.
- 1:52:41You know, he was he was talking drones up and helping with the
- 1:52:47stuff because he's got a better handle on the office.
- 1:52:49So Robbie. What did you, what did you tell
- 1:52:51us about that? Wells knows that he's got the
- 1:52:56experience Wells is, what is he would?
- 1:52:59This is he be his last year not when we have been there, when he
- 1:53:05started playing as a true freshman at Marshall.
- 1:53:08So yeah, he's had a lot of experience even before he got
- 1:53:10here. Yeah, he knows what the future
- 1:53:13is. He knows that he is there to
- 1:53:15help that program build, and if that program is him, If he gets
- 1:53:21beat out, he's not going to be he's not going to be a guy that
- 1:53:24goes that I got beat for the starting job.
- 1:53:27Now I got to just, you know, wait and see if I get an
- 1:53:30opportunity. He's going to help everybody
- 1:53:33around. He's that kind of football
- 1:53:35player. He's that Anna kid and I mean,
- 1:53:39that's a good thing to have with the youth that you're bringing
- 1:53:43in and drones without a lot of experience.
- 1:53:47But drones athletically is, is a kid that's going to be able to
- 1:53:51point. He's going to go out there and
- 1:53:53do some of the things that they've Excuse me that they've
- 1:53:57enjoyed doing in the past with with some other guys would Logan
- 1:54:03Thomas with. Brian Randall, I don't know, I
- 1:54:07Ain't Goin. I ain't going to say he's going
- 1:54:09to lead with Vic. But I mean to be able to if the
- 1:54:13past breaks down, he can take off which we know where else can
- 1:54:16too, not to the same level though.
- 1:54:19No, not to the same level. It's kind of like drones is
- 1:54:25going to show us. Is one plug?
- 1:54:27It was one place that we're going to go.
- 1:54:30He's the only, he is the quarterback that can make that
- 1:54:33play. He's a quarterback play and what
- 1:54:36I keep saying and I know I've mentioned it to you Robbie.
- 1:54:38And Brian, y'all play coach and I said there's parts of the game
- 1:54:44where you need, just that one place, third and seven, two
- 1:54:47passes breakdown and he scampered. 417 always go back in
- 1:54:51my mind. Y'all remember what third and
- 1:54:5231? Would tie rod against, FSU y'all
- 1:54:56remember? Right.
- 1:54:57Oh yeah, it's all about three quarterbacks in the country.
- 1:54:59They could do that that year and he was wondering if he did it
- 1:55:01any plenty game. Well you can go to.
- 1:55:04You can go to most of the games we play last year.
- 1:55:07What other teams was getting those one plays?
- 1:55:09Whether it was the running back of the quarterback.
- 1:55:12You like, damn it? Why does this always happen to
- 1:55:14us? I Won't Say, I'm going to
- 1:55:16mention somebody Robbie's mentioned already and somebody
- 1:55:20David mentioned last week and we know he was a high recruit.
- 1:55:24I think Benji go snail. Is going to take a big step this
- 1:55:28year. I think he's cleared those
- 1:55:30injuries. We know the talent he is, we
- 1:55:32talk to, you know, we heard Davis talked about his blocking
- 1:55:36and I think if you were able to, I like Gallo.
- 1:55:38I think Gallows, the entrenched starter, and they Kwan's always
- 1:55:41on the field. One day bronze won't get to
- 1:55:43interview day tomorrow. We're gonna we're gonna push
- 1:55:45Travis well so that interview in the fall crying.
- 1:55:47He's not a true freshman anymore.
- 1:55:48So I think that's refreshing to can't make a bullshit anymore.
- 1:55:51Exactly. But I think with someone like
- 1:55:53Gosnell and we're hearing about that blocking, we know his size,
- 1:55:56240, 250 plus, I think there's going to be some times where
- 1:56:00they wouldn't be afraid to put him on the field.
- 1:56:03I don't know if we'll see it in Spring.
- 1:56:04I hope he does get some run just to prove that he's back past the
- 1:56:08injury. But I think he's I think he's
- 1:56:12still working back. Okay, I mean I like I don't
- 1:56:16think physically he's working back.
- 1:56:19I think he's back physically but he's just working through.
- 1:56:23What's there, you know, I do. I don't think this is a group of
- 1:56:28coaches that jump in on potential.
- 1:56:31It's he's going to have to work through and prove he can be
- 1:56:34there and do that and I don't think he's going.
- 1:56:36I don't think he's going to take very long to prove that.
- 1:56:41Yeah I mean 65 66 250 pounds. That's a, that's a good that's a
- 1:56:47good that's a good chunk of human.
- 1:56:49He's going he can block, he can move things and he's at 65 66.
- 1:56:55That's that's a whole lot. And going across the middle
- 1:56:57trying to catch balls now. Yeah, you better have some, you
- 1:57:00better have some big linebackers in some big things.
- 1:57:03I mean, look, look at the NFL right now, look at Gronkowski
- 1:57:07and Kelsey and all of those types of guys, they're big guys
- 1:57:11and they give small safeties and linebackers.
- 1:57:15He'll give them pills what they do.
- 1:57:17I'm not, I'm not, don't get me wrong.
- 1:57:19I'm not jumping in and saying, God smells Kelsey or Gronkowski,
- 1:57:23he's built. That was built that way, he's
- 1:57:25built that way. It's going to get people
- 1:57:27trouble. Yep.
- 1:57:29All right, let's hit one last piece here.
- 1:57:30We ain't talked about it all night.
- 1:57:32We are an offensive long podcast, crying.
- 1:57:37You've been looking? What what, what are you looking
- 1:57:39for? Well, we don't know.
- 1:57:40The, I told you can be mixed up. It's gonna be mixed up who and
- 1:57:43what are you looking for in the line on Saturday?
- 1:57:46As you are sitting somewhere somewhere and if y'all go sit in
- 1:57:50the west of the East stands, you're considering what I saw
- 1:57:52last year, I'm going to very much be focused on Jules and the
- 1:57:57individuals that I'm focused on is who, who the hell is playing
- 1:58:01Right Guard or the guard opposite, little more who's
- 1:58:06playing that guard, how they're doing what they're doing.
- 1:58:09And then I'm looking at right tackle, do I see improvement
- 1:58:15from the product that we saw from Parker Clements last year,
- 1:58:18for the majority of the season? And beyond that, I'd like to see
- 1:58:23what some of those other tackles can do whether It's Johnny
- 1:58:27Garrett or somebody else jumping in there.
- 1:58:29I'd like to see what we have at, tackle Beyond Parker, Clements
- 1:58:35on the right side. So that's what I'm looking at.
- 1:58:39I feel like Chaplin has left locked up, I feel like a little
- 1:58:42more has left locked up, or right, depending on how they
- 1:58:45swap them and who ends up being the other guard starting.
- 1:58:49But those are what I'm looking for is is do we have a starting
- 1:58:54guard and a starting right? I Googled that can Elevate the
- 1:58:58level of play that we saw last year because that's I'd
- 1:59:02struggled mightily, the right tackle side struggled, mightily
- 1:59:07Hansen, struggled off, and on throughout the season if we can
- 1:59:12improve that in any degree and you factor in what what a little
- 1:59:19bit better running game can do for an offense with the RPO
- 1:59:24that's going to be big because if you can run in somewhat
- 1:59:27effectively, you put a defense in a bind.
- 1:59:33Like I said earlier, the options.
- 1:59:35Go out to window and RPO if you can't run or pass.
- 1:59:38Yep. And I mean, I can't, I can't
- 1:59:43wait to see 61 and 68 double-team somebody more and
- 1:59:52more get hip to hip and drive some poor guy through the
- 2:00:00linebacker core. Because Those two guys, when
- 2:00:04they go after things in practice, from what I saw they
- 2:00:09have they have streak about them, is you step in front of us
- 2:00:14and we're going to move you against your will regardless of
- 2:00:18what you want and when you put those two side-by-side together,
- 2:00:23you're going to give some push inside and the way that coach
- 2:00:26crook likes to run the inside Zone and press that egg out to
- 2:00:32the go. Guards, rear end.
- 2:00:35You're going to get a double team out of those two, and
- 2:00:37there's going to be some scenes inside and it's going to be a
- 2:00:42beautiful thing. Now, like you said that other
- 2:00:45guard position, if they can get that, you know, if they put one
- 2:00:51more its Center and one more guard, you know, that's going to
- 2:00:54jail them. Two boys have grown up together
- 2:00:57if that other guard and you can get that gel.
- 2:01:02That thing to jail in on both sides, your Zone Run game inside
- 2:01:06right there is going to open up and it's going to help it's
- 2:01:13going to help that offense tremendously.
- 2:01:15That's what I'm excited to see up front, definitely that guard
- 2:01:18position is going to be big because everybody always talks
- 2:01:22Brotherhood. But you got two brothers on the
- 2:01:25line. I'm saying, like me, I play
- 2:01:28tight end in my tackle was my best friend we wrote.
- 2:01:31All the games together. We play Little League baseball
- 2:01:35football together, and I could tell you when I'm yelling, when
- 2:01:40he's going to miss a block, I can tell you if I'm going out
- 2:01:43for a pass and I can hear him, breathing took a certain way and
- 2:01:48I see this dude is standing and he's about to bull rush.
- 2:01:52I said this motherfuckers about to get ran over, y'all better
- 2:01:54get rid of this ball quick or I would just change your stay in
- 2:01:58because I knew our quarterbacks getting here.
- 2:02:01Cuz my buddy here is not finished, he's not about to
- 2:02:05block this guy, just call this linebackers.
- 2:02:07Come in here, and we'll be able to get him.
- 2:02:08So it's just certain things that you learn when you're playing
- 2:02:11with somebody for amount of time.
- 2:02:15How to breathing on the trenches?
- 2:02:18What they're talking about their demeanor different things like
- 2:02:21that that you're going to learn and I hope these boys are
- 2:02:23picking up but as far as me, just looking for players that
- 2:02:27have to be Chaplet for me, like I just he is a big dude.
- 2:02:31You know what I'm saying, but he's very young, you know, and I
- 2:02:35want to see. I don't want to put too much on
- 2:02:37him cuz I don't know what he's got.
- 2:02:38I just want to see. I seen him getting a couple
- 2:02:40games and I seen it move some people but I want to see.
- 2:02:43Kenny do that consistently, you know, what to say?
- 2:02:45Cause you're talking about, starting on that line at the one
- 2:02:49of those compositions man, you're gonna go up against some
- 2:02:52high-profile guys. Like you talk about a plan FSU,
- 2:02:57you know what I'm saying, along with some of these other teams
- 2:03:00and you're gonna go and get some Um, I'm gonna get some defensive
- 2:03:03ends just going to give you going to bring it.
- 2:03:05So I'll be I'll be interested to see Chapman just a person on the
- 2:03:12line that I'll be looking for. Then of course I know we talked
- 2:03:14about a little bit. I'm always gonna look at my
- 2:03:16tight ends, you know what I'm saying?
- 2:03:18I feel like they're extensions out of line.
- 2:03:21All Gallo, gets a Gallo, gets a bad rap but I think Gallup does
- 2:03:24his job. He reminds me a lot of, you know
- 2:03:27what? Ryan Mallett.
- 2:03:28He reminds me a lot of him as far.
- 2:03:31What he does and what he brings we've seen him.
- 2:03:34Catch a couple of passes and you know take them for 20 30 40
- 2:03:38yards, he's not a burner, he's not going to do anything special
- 2:03:43in the past game but when he can be effective in the past game
- 2:03:48but stay in and keep people off of our running back our
- 2:03:51quarterback, it's gonna help us win some games so yeah, he's
- 2:03:55been there a long time to you know, I'm saying that so if
- 2:03:59nothing else he's got to be a leader to Ooh, these young guys
- 2:04:03in the tight end room and on the and on the offensive line
- 2:04:07because he's lined up beside those titian's, I meant beside
- 2:04:10those tackles and stuff as well. And he's like, hey, This guy
- 2:04:15showing Knuckles, this guy's white-knuckle, this guy's this,
- 2:04:17you gotta know what's going. You gotta know what's coming.
- 2:04:20So that is, that is a big development of what will have on
- 2:04:23the line as well. So oh yeah.
- 2:04:28So it's going to be a fun spring game and believe it or not,
- 2:04:31boys, we have went over two hours.
- 2:04:34Oh, no. Like I told you yesterday this
- 2:04:37thing was going to be well over to.
- 2:04:39I know it was, it was but I mean, we head to the spring game
- 2:04:43is for games away. Four days away, not for games
- 2:04:47away. Lord have mercy, because you how
- 2:04:49long my day was after 11:30, Curtis was going, insane.
- 2:04:54Got to outfit just about an hour.
- 2:05:02Most days I'm going to bed by 9:30.
- 2:05:04We got an old you turning 40 days.
- 2:05:06Riding up to listen to listen to the podcast, we appreciate it.
- 2:05:44That is true. You got an hour on all of us.
- 2:05:47Yeah, that's true. I was working at home tomorrow.
- 2:05:49We could go another hour, but I'm going to wrap it because I
- 2:05:53want to get some sleep. Yeah, nothing too crazy here.
- 2:05:58I don't get sleep. I don't, especially on this one
- 2:06:02that wakes up really early every day.
- 2:06:05He went over, what? Moorhead don't have kids, but I
- 2:06:08still probably go to bed earlier than I know you do.
- 2:06:11That's it up at 5:30 had to be at work at 7:00.
- 2:06:15Anything breaking just, just to lick her heart's here.
- 2:06:20Well, we still got, hey, we all we got to do is third quarter,
- 2:06:25we down by 10, we have to cut this one, we got to cut this
- 2:06:29lead. We got to go into the fourth
- 2:06:30quarter being down by no more than 7 and will we?
- 2:06:33They got let's look at this let's look at this first half.
- 2:06:36The difference, is they made more threes in us?
- 2:06:38They took more free throws and most that's the difference.
- 2:06:41Yep. Flip it around.
