- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 2nd of April. Hope you're going well.
- 0:17No more shenanigans today. We're going to play it straight.
- 0:20That's right. I hope your week is going well
- 0:23as here we are in the middle of the week.
- 0:25And today's Bible reading just continues a theme.
- 0:28The way that John records all the different incredible,
- 0:32miraculous things that Jesus does, each one of them is there
- 0:36for a particular reason, not just about the miracle itself,
- 0:39but each one of the miracles points from a physical change to
- 0:45a spiritual change or from a physical problem to a physical
- 0:48problem. And today is no different as he
- 0:50talks about blindness. And then in the end, it's
- 0:52actually about the blindness of the Pharisees.
- 0:55You just can't see who he is. So without any further spoilers,
- 0:59let us read together John Chapter 9.
- 1:12As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind
- 1:15from birth. Rabbi His disciples asked him,
- 1:20why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins
- 1:24or his parents sins? It was not because of his sins
- 1:28or his parents sins, Jesus answered.
- 1:31This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.
- 1:36We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned to us by the one
- 1:39who sent us. The night is coming and then no
- 1:43one can work. But while I am here in the
- 1:46world, I am the light of the world.
- 1:50Then he spit on the ground, made mud with his saliva and spread
- 1:53the mud over the blind man's eyes.
- 1:56He told him, go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam.
- 2:00Siloam means scent. So the man went and washed and
- 2:04came back seeing his neighbours and others who knew him as a
- 2:09blind beggar asked each other, isn't this the man who used to
- 2:12sit and beg? Some said he was and others said
- 2:17no, he just looks like him. But the beggar kept saying yes I
- 2:22am the same one. They asked who healed you, what
- 2:26happened? He told them the man they called
- 2:30Jesus made mud and spread it over my eyes and told me go to
- 2:34the pool of Siloam and wash yourself.
- 2:37So I went and washed, and now I can see.
- 2:42Where is he now, they asked. I don't know, he replied.
- 2:46Then they took the man who had been blind to the Pharisees,
- 2:49because it was on the Sabbath that Jesus had made the mud and
- 2:52healed him. The Pharisees asked the man all
- 2:54about it. So he told them, He put the mud
- 2:58over my eyes, and when I washed it away I could see some of the
- 3:03Pharisees said, This man Jesus is not from God, for he is
- 3:08working on the Sabbath. Others said, But how could an
- 3:12ordinary Sinner do such miraculous signs?
- 3:16So there was a deep division of opinion among them.
- 3:20Then the Pharisees again questioned the man who had been
- 3:22blind and demanded, What's your opinion about this man who
- 3:26healed you? The man replied, I think he must
- 3:29be a prophet. The Jewish leaders still refused
- 3:33to believe the man who had been blind and could now see, so they
- 3:37called in his parents. They asked them, Is this your
- 3:41son? Was he born blind?
- 3:43If so, how can he now see? His parents replied, We know
- 3:49this is our son and that he was born blind, but we don't know
- 3:54how he can see or who healed him.
- 3:57Ask him. He's old enough to speak for
- 3:59himself. His parents said this because
- 4:02they were afraid of the Jewish leaders who had announced that
- 4:05anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from
- 4:08the synagogue. That's why they said he is old
- 4:11enough ask him. So for the second time, they
- 4:16called in the man who had been blind and told him God should
- 4:20get the glory for this. Because we know that this man,
- 4:24Jesus is a Sinner. I don't know whether he's a
- 4:27Sinner, the man replied. But I know this, I was blind and
- 4:32now I can see. But what did he do?
- 4:36They asked. How did he heal you look, The
- 4:40man exclaimed. I told you once, didn't you
- 4:43listen? Why do you want to hear it
- 4:45again? Do you want to become his
- 4:47disciples too? Then they cursed him and said,
- 4:51You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
- 4:55We know God spoke to Moses, but we don't even know where this
- 4:59man comes from. Why, that's very strange.
- 5:03The man replied, He healed my eyes, and yet you don't know
- 5:08where he comes from. We know that God doesn't listen
- 5:11to sinners, but He is ready to hear those who worship Him and
- 5:15do His will. Ever since the world began, no
- 5:19one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind.
- 5:23If this man were not from God, he couldn't have done it.
- 5:27You were born a total Sinner. They answered, Are you trying to
- 5:31teach us? And they threw him out of the
- 5:34synagogue. When Jesus heard what had
- 5:37happened, he found the man and asked him, Do you believe in the
- 5:41Son of Man? The man answered, Who is he?
- 5:44Sir? I want to believe in him.
- 5:47You have seen him, Jesus said, and he is speaking to you.
- 5:51Yes, Lord, I believe, the man said, And he worshipped Jesus.
- 5:57Then Jesus told him, I entered this world to render judgement,
- 6:02to give sight to the blind, and to show those who think they see
- 6:06that they are blind. Some Pharisees who were standing
- 6:10nearby heard him and asked, Are you saying we're blind?
- 6:15If you were blind, you wouldn't be guilty, Jesus replied.
- 6:20But you remain guilty because you claim you can see.
- 6:34Jesus. We know that all too often we
- 6:36too are blinded. It's it's so easy for us to
- 6:40judge those Pharisees, but Lord, we are blind too.
- 6:44And so often your goodness and Your grace abounds around us and
- 6:49we just don't see it. Jesus, take those scales off our
- 6:55eyes, take away our own blindness so that we can see You
- 7:02and your work and Your truth all around us, and that we can
- 7:08behold it and share it and know it.
- 7:12Jesus, thank you that You are the truth and that when we know
- 7:17you, when we intimately, properly know you, that your
- 7:22truth comes to us. Oh, what a gift you are to us.
- 7:27Jesus, we just love you and we thank you and we pray that we
- 7:31would always see you for who you are, our loving, wonderful
- 7:35Saviour, the Son of God. And we worship you and praise
- 7:39you and pray all of these things in your name.
- 7:42Amen.
