- 0:05The Ant and Dec art scandal Welcome to Mark and Pete and
- 0:10this episode we're looking at anti Dec reportedly getting
- 0:15mixed up in something which raised a case questions about
- 0:19authentication and profits. In other words, a real scandal.
- 0:23Yes, this is Mark and Pete 2 blokes with half an opinion.
- 0:28Now here's our first thought. Popular art that is signed and
- 0:34named can be bought to be privately claimed until you're
- 0:38conned and then ashamed. It's then that you know that
- 0:42you've been framed Well indeed. Yes, Ant and Dec Yes, The famous
- 0:48TV presenters have been asked at a High Court judge to help them
- 0:53obtain information about deals in which they bought and sold
- 0:57Banksy artworks after claiming an intermediary took secret and
- 1:01unauthorized profits. Now the TV host said that they
- 1:05paid £550,000 for one set of Banksy works, but the seller
- 1:12apparently only received 300,000.
- 1:16So the query is, Mr. Pete, what did you do with the £250,000?
- 1:21Yes, good question. Yes, I don't worry, I'm keeping
- 1:24it safe for expanding user. Base it is extraordinary, isn't
- 1:31it? So I ask you when you come in
- 1:33with something like this Ant and Dec famous celebrities, of
- 1:36course, and this is sort of what's raised the the point, but
- 1:39they are not the only ones that have been scammed in this way.
- 1:42There are many others that we can talk about, but the fact is
- 1:45is that substantial sums have gone missing and it's about the
- 1:50being hoodwinked, isn't it? We all like art.
- 1:53We all get embroiled with with names like Banksy and many
- 1:57others, but somewhere down the line some people see this as an
- 2:02opportunity for. Fraud.
- 2:05Yes. Why is that?
- 2:06Yes, Well, I, I think it's a natural tendency, often called
- 2:11avarice. When there's an opportunity to
- 2:13make more, especially money effectively for nothing, people
- 2:17are going to want to take advantage of it.
- 2:20And The thing is that this is, is a serious problem, not
- 2:27because of just because of people being duped to money
- 2:30going missing, but because truth matters.
- 2:33Authenticity, authenticity rather matters.
- 2:36Integrity matters. Once it grows, then you, you
- 2:41don't see it straight away, but you get more and more of it.
- 2:44And the whole of the trust factor and also the joy of, of
- 2:50art disappears when you just don't know whether you're being
- 2:53conned or not. The whole, you know, the whole
- 2:56of society could crumble and your enjoyment of life can
- 3:00dissipate away when there's too much lying and untruthfulness.
- 3:06They, it just does matter. I mean, it seems like I may be
- 3:09over egging it, but it, it, it, it does matter.
- 3:11I've seen seen it happen time and time again when people have
- 3:15have been enjoying maybe some art or maybe a performance, but
- 3:19when they see a lack of integrity or extreme poor
- 3:22morality of the person involved that suddenly the, the joy
- 3:26evaporates from it. So this, this is very important,
- 3:30you know, yes, in terms of a financial integrity level, but
- 3:34also just for the good of society as a whole.
- 3:38Well, indeed, now Ant and Dec enlisted the consultant who was
- 3:42not named in the chord but referred to as X.
- 3:47Now I just rather unfortunate name, not the former Twitter
- 3:51oddly, although I think the name X on that front is a bit weird
- 3:55in itself, but called X and simply to be able to help them
- 3:58buy and sell the artworks. Now the fact of the matter is
- 4:02intermediary is I guess a very common place in artworks.
- 4:05I mean, obviously they're very well known firms.
- 4:07There are very well known consultants throughout the world
- 4:10and they are specialists in their field.
- 4:12But what is I think really unfortunate here is that it's to
- 4:17your point, it's the integrity of the industry because we've
- 4:22seen and we've talked about this before, that although this is a
- 4:26slightly different form of fraud, we focus on things where
- 4:30we've had, you know, paintings which are basically false.
- 4:34They're they're, they're basically fake artwork.
- 4:37But in this particular case, we've clearly got an
- 4:39intermediary that is creaming off some money which should be
- 4:44going to other people, IE the Jews are meant to be going
- 4:47somewhere else. What do you do?
- 4:48How do you claw back that money? And I suppose the other thing,
- 4:52and we do need to be clear on this, is that we don't know who
- 4:54the name of the intermediary is because they haven't been named
- 4:57yet. Maybe that will surface.
- 4:59But either way, there's also the other point, which is the devils
- 5:03in the artwork, the detail. What was the contract because we
- 5:07now need to know well, what was the Commission?
- 5:10Because of course, obviously commissions can vary.
- 5:13There are some standard ones, sometimes big, you know, art
- 5:17dealers will you know, possibly charge up to 20% of a of a
- 5:21transaction, whereas others might only charge ten, 5%
- 5:24etcetera. So I think that maybe this this
- 5:27is a little bit of a sensational mix.
- 5:29I mean, this is great for, I guess bringing antidep back to
- 5:33the yet again in the media. They're very good, aren't they
- 5:38at at sort of a high profile activity?
- 5:43I know that in this particular case, it appears as though
- 5:45they've paid all in, in all good faith.
- 5:49But somehow this this hasn't really worked out very well for
- 5:54them, has it? No.
- 5:55And, and, and I suppose what we can, what we can see here is
- 5:59the, it's when business takes over part, you know, where,
- 6:05when, as soon as there's a lot of money involved, you're going
- 6:08to get intermediates as you intermediaries, as you've just
- 6:11discussed. And when there's a lot of money
- 6:14involved, even more, you're going to get fake intermediates
- 6:18or intermediaries who are able to, you know, inflate the
- 6:22amounts needed or have them funnelled in the wrong
- 6:27direction. You could, I mean, it's almost
- 6:29as though you can end up with an intermediary selling a, a Banksy
- 6:34painting and going through all the procedure that you don't
- 6:38actually, you don't actually involve the one person who you
- 6:41thought might be involved and that is the artist.
- 6:43You have endless chain of intermediaries and it doesn't
- 6:47well like right, maybe it has got that.
- 6:48Far but. You know, this is the issue with
- 6:51any sort of artistic endeavour. Once you get money involved, it,
- 6:57it, it, you end up intermediaries getting in the
- 6:59way. Maybe, maybe we should stop
- 7:02paying for art and, you know, just make it ourselves.
- 7:06Well, indeed. Well, interestingly the judge
- 7:09has said that they will rule very soon on whether the order
- 7:13is there to disclose the actual intermediary.
- 7:16But at the end of the day, however we look at it, art and
- 7:19deck are in. The dock.
