Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The 'Psychic Mirror' and Its Power of Transformation of the External Nature

- 0:01One of the powerful techniques which Sri Aurobindo describes
- 0:04for the spiritual aspirant is the separation of the witness
- 0:08consciousness from the active external nature.
- 0:13Creation of a mental witness awareness is not quite the same
- 0:17thing, although it may be a helpful step along the way.
- 0:22This is still the play of the nature in the mental plane.
- 0:26What is intended here is not a mental approach, but development
- 0:30of a standpoint that is outside the normal action of body, life
- 0:35and mind, residing in the spiritual consciousness.
- 0:41The Mother has described what she calls the psychic mirror,
- 0:45which is a form of witness awareness that is not mental,
- 0:48but which is holding up the energetic vibrational pattern of
- 0:52the soul presence, the psychic being, as a means of determining
- 0:57whether any particular aspect of the external being conforms with
- 1:02the psychic beings focus or not. In other words, is there
- 1:07coherence between the psychic being and the activities of
- 1:11body, life and mind? Some people think that what is
- 1:16intended is their conscience. However this is not the case.
- 1:22Conscience is based in moral and ethical training along
- 1:25guidelines set in the social structure.
- 1:28What is moral or ethical in one society may be considered
- 1:33immoral or unethical in another. Even if something is considered
- 1:38immoral or unethical in every society, it is still a rule
- 1:44based judgment, not the intended psychic mirror approach the
- 1:49Mother describes. For the spiritual seeker
- 1:53awakened to the stirrings of the soul, there comes a point in
- 1:57time when he can recognize the vibrational field created by the
- 2:01psychic being. He feels the aspiration, the
- 2:05consecration, the surrender of the ego, the experience of
- 2:09bliss, ananda and other vibrations associated with the
- 2:14soul. What the Mother proposes is that
- 2:18whenever there is a thought and emotion, a feeling, a need, that
- 2:24the seeker place that vibration side by side with the psychic
- 2:28vibration and see if there is coherence or whether there is
- 2:33distance or disturbance between the two.
- 2:37When we are focused on external activities and we experience
- 2:42greed, jealousy, anger, grasping, attachment, these each
- 2:48have their own vibrational signature and wavelength, so to
- 2:51speak. Many people in fact assign
- 2:54colors to these varying vibrations such as green with
- 2:58envy, red with sexual energy, yellow with fear, etcetera.
- 3:04The pure psychic flame is a flame of white light.
- 3:08If you can begin to refer all the external responses,
- 3:12reactions and reflections to this psychic mirror, one quickly
- 3:17can distinguish those things which interfere or disrupt the
- 3:21psychic vibrational field and those which enhance and support
- 3:26it. It is not a matter of thought.
- 3:30It is not a matter of emotion, It is not a matter of moral
- 3:34judgment. It is simply a reflection of how
- 3:38we are vibrating and whether that energetic field is
- 3:42compatible with the true psychic energy.
- 3:46The power of this approach is that over time we begin to
- 3:49adjust our acceptance and rejection of energies which
- 3:52approach us as well as those that trigger something still
- 3:56within us in seed form. From past experiences, the
- 4:01mother recommends that if one looks back over time after
- 4:04adopting this practice, one will see the substantial difference
- 4:08in reactions, responses, thoughts, and feelings that have
- 4:13taken place. People frequently ask whether we
- 4:18can intervene successfully in our external nature or whether
- 4:22this will bring about reactions that are actually going to set
- 4:25us back. This approach comes from the
- 4:28idea of the abandonment of life as the goal, the liberation from
- 4:33the earthly life, whether we call it moksha, Nirvana,
- 4:37cessation of birth, ascent to heaven, or some other
- 4:42terminology that implies the same thing.
- 4:46For those interested in the transformation of nature through
- 4:49the evolution of consciousness, a different view must be
- 4:53considered. That view is that as
- 4:57consciousness develops, it can effectuate changes in the
- 5:01preceding stages of consciousness.
- 5:04Just as the life energy changes dense matter into living matter,
- 5:09and just as the mental force rearranges both the life energy
- 5:13and matter, so the next stage of conscious evolution will be able
- 5:19to modify and change mind, life, and body.
- 5:24In that case, the question then comes down to method of
- 5:28implementation. Forceful suppression is found to
- 5:32be counterproductive, but gaining conscious adherence and
- 5:36acceptance, willingness to change through the promptings of
- 5:40the psychic being, is a potential mechanism to effect
- 5:44change. In his book The Mother, Sri
- 5:48Aurobindo identifies the role of the spiritual seeker as one of
- 5:52aspiration, rejection, surrender.
- 5:56This implies an intervention in the external nature as the
- 6:00psychic being assumes its role as the guide and organizing
- 6:04force for the changes that are intended as the next stage of
- 6:09evolution takes place. The Mother notes quote.
- 6:15There is but one remedy. That signpost must always be
- 6:19there. A mirror well placed in one's
- 6:22feelings, impulses, all one's sensations.
- 6:27One sees them in this mirror. There are some which are not
- 6:30very beautiful or pleasant to look at.
- 6:33There are others which are beautiful, pleasant, and must be
- 6:36kept. This one does 100 times a day if
- 6:40necessary, and it is very interesting.
- 6:44One draws a kind of big circle around the psychic mirror and
- 6:48arranges all the elements around it.
- 6:51If there's something that is not all right, it casts a sort of
- 6:55Gray shadow upon the mirror. This element must be shifted,
- 7:00organized. It must be spoken to, made to
- 7:03understand. One must come out of that
- 7:06darkness. If you do that, you never get
- 7:10bored. When people are not kind, when
- 7:14one has a cold in the head, when 1 doesn't know one's lessons and
- 7:19so on, one begins to look into this mirror.
- 7:23It is very interesting. One sees the canker.
- 7:27I thought I was sincere. Not at all.
- 7:32Not a thing happens in life which is not interesting.
- 7:36This mirror is very, very well made.
- 7:39Do that for two years, 3-4 years.
- 7:42At times one must do it for 20 years.
- 7:46Then at the end of a few years, look back, turn your gaze upon
- 7:50what you were three years ago. How have I changed?
- 7:55Was I like that? It is very entertaining.
- 7:59I could speak like that. I could talk like that, think
- 8:02like that. But I was indeed stupid.
- 8:06How I have changed, Isn't it very interesting?
- 8:11Isn't it? End Quote Reference Sri
