- 0:01Yeah, you gotta work. You gotta work. By sign it's mine gotta
- 0:13show. Everybody is my sign you gotta work. Cry shin another mind whom
- 0:19saga die this day line, don't tell you gotta work. Let the conversation
- 0:24begin. This is let's Talk with your host Carl Lee. Hello, ladies
- 0:30and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee and this is Let's talk and uh interesting
- 0:34show today. We've got uh, we've gotta We've got to guess that one
- 0:40is my boss. So I have to I have to. I have to
- 0:43kind of be really nice to him. And on the other side, he
- 0:46is the uh he's a state champion in double A basketball. So we'll get
- 0:54some information and I'll do a proper introduction for him. I'll start out with
- 0:59my guest, my co host, Hollis Lewis how you doing, man,
- 1:02I'm doing well. You you don't look like you're coming from work unless you're
- 1:07Unless it's a dress day, it's casual Friday. Is that what it is?
- 1:11Okay? Or is it your casual from my castle? Okay? Okay,
- 1:14I guess when you move up to jam a little bit, you can
- 1:17kind of pick and choose your dress code. Okay, all right, So
- 1:22Hunter Moles a South Charleston guy. For sure. Hunter played both soccer and
- 1:30basketball in high school and at at s C. And also you did the
- 1:38same thing in college. I don't know, if I know, two sport
- 1:44guys. Not too many left. There's not too many of those. So
- 1:49that's I thought that was a rare thing when I was when I was going
- 1:52through your bio. Graduated from West Virginia Tech, and then you went on
- 2:00got your masters from UC. Right out of graduation, you go right into
- 2:07coaching, yes, sir, assistant coach in basketball correct, okay, at
- 2:15South Charleston co Vic Herbert Man. And that's young, yeah, very I
- 2:21mean, that's that's really young. I think I was twenty one when I
- 2:23started, Okay, and then you went on to Charleston Catholic and I've already
- 2:30said that, and you just won a state championship, yes, sir,
- 2:35So I'm interested in you know, people talk all the time about the the
- 2:43challenges that come with coaching and creating culture and all of these kind of things,
- 2:50and and you know, and you're obviously you are a young guy,
- 2:53a lot younger than I am. And so when you start talking about coaching
- 2:59for looso. Where does yours come from? Because clearly it's it's being successful,
- 3:06And where do you come from? Where does that come from? Is
- 3:09it just you? Are you? Is there a coach that you have looked
- 3:14up to, played for or what? Tell us a little bit about you
- 3:17and this desire in coaching. Yeah, I've kind of always enjoyed it,
- 3:23always enjoyed the game inside the game. But I guess it could really start
- 3:28from mom and dad. To be honest with you, that's the best coaches
- 3:30I've ever had. Okay, I mean my mom is I'm super close with
- 3:32my mom. My dad. You know, he he was kind of my
- 3:37first coach. He played baseball westernon State, so he was a baseball guy.
- 3:42I grew up playing some baseball, but it got to the point we
- 3:44had to pick and you know, I kind of was a little bit better
- 3:46with soccer and basketball, and so it starts with mom and dad and just
- 3:53you know, I look back at the way that they taught me to do
- 3:55things, and something that always stuck was my dad. I would you know,
- 3:59he's a well you're not playing as much as you want, You need
- 4:01to work harder in practice and hearing stories about my dad. You know,
- 4:04he he was a hard worker like that. Both of us are not super
- 4:09skilled in the game of basketball. You wouldn't not super athletic, but we
- 4:14had to outwork people. So that kind of comes into the coaching part.
- 4:17I think where you know, I had a lot of just coaches growing up.
- 4:24Coach Bob Williams at Tech was my basketball coach. I went to Tech
- 4:28to play for Luis Cortel, who if you went to a meeting and you
- 4:31didn't bring a pin, it was a It was a sprint for the team.
- 4:34Everybody had to bring a pin to the met didn't matter if he was
- 4:36gonna use it, but you had to bring a pin. The success in
- 4:40the details was there, like super super detailed meetings started at seven, You
- 4:45walk in at seven, you're late. Little things like that, Little things
- 4:49like that where you know, in college it really took it to the next
- 4:54level, but even in high school, Vic Herbert and Shawn Napper used to
- 4:57call me coach Moles. They used to call me that my senior year.
- 5:00I just understand it offense as well. My assistant coaches at Catholic have been
- 5:05Rasha Ki Kate and Devin Harris. That's two of my best friends in my
- 5:09life, and that makes it a lot of fun too. But we always
- 5:13talked about it when we were younger, how much fun we thought it would
- 5:15be the coacher on team. We're a big fan of exes and o's,
- 5:19And as we started getting older and older, we realized exs and oose is
- 5:23maybe ten percent of this thing really as coach of personalities, and that's that's
- 5:28really the big part of coaching giving back. We've just had so many good
- 5:33coaches growing up. A lot of them were you know, maybe Rashad and
- 5:39uh Devin's dad. It could have been my dad, it could have been
- 5:43someone else's we're playing AAU and you know, someone else's dads, cause we
- 5:46just had so many and it'd be hard to just shit there and name everybody.
- 5:51But yeah, just having those guys by my side understanding what we want
- 5:57to accomplish was huge, And I think I get I think coaches in general
- 6:02might get too much credit when they win and maybe too much blame when they
- 6:06lose, because really you have to give credit. I keep thinking more and
- 6:13more about this since we've won. Like my first year as a head coach,
- 6:15I was twenty three years old, you know, those players didn't have
- 6:19to buy in. They didn't have to say, you know, well,
- 6:23yeah, we actually do want to do these type of things. We do
- 6:26want to echo the calls, like if we're calling out a drill, hey,
- 6:30three man weave, everybody else at three man we weave. We don't
- 6:33walk on the basketball court, no talking during free throws and shirt tucks tucked
- 6:39in. You know. So like if gods come in and they're fighting the
- 6:43rules, the rules or fighting that that makes it harder too. We don't
- 6:46we don't have to deal with that, and we can actually coach you in
- 6:49exus and o's. So if you can, if you can buy into the
- 6:56little details, and it's I'm just being honest, some guys can't do it.
- 7:00They can't get over uh somebody telling them to do this, do X,
- 7:04Y and Z. And if you just buy into that, you could
- 7:09be a lot better team. So let me hold, I have to say
- 7:14this because I'm over here like shaking. Okay, because like for the parent
- 7:20that that that just hurt. This is a young man who is coaching and
- 7:27the things that he's talking about being on time, the focus that you have
- 7:31to have. H that's still that's old school. And and I don't even
- 7:38know if if you if you should, if we should even call it old
- 7:42school. It should be just the principal fundamental, the just the fundamentals of
- 7:47how how it is again being on time. Some of that sometimes is the
- 7:55responsibility of that parent to get that child there. But if you're late and
- 8:00you're in school and you're and you're going to practice, something's totally wrong,
- 8:05you know. And I just like, I so what it was just crazy
- 8:09because I was building up over here, like thinking, Okay, I gotta
- 8:13say something, but I don't want to interrupt them. Because we've talked about
- 8:18those kinds of structures in practice, those kind of structures in sports since we've
- 8:24been on air. And I still think I still don't think people get it.
- 8:30They don't until they go and see it. Maybe I don't know if
- 8:33they really they see that we want a championship, they don't understand how we've
- 8:37gotten there. Big point. But let me let me ask you this,
- 8:39just to not necessarily come back that, but just from the other side,
- 8:43do you think instilling those principles are easier at Catholic because there's already sort of
- 8:50a built in standard you have to drop this way, you have to do
- 8:52these certain things in order to be a part of this academic I think that's
- 8:56a great point, and I think Charleston Cally is a great school for you
- 9:00because it is. To be honest with you, I was really excited to
- 9:03coach there because academics is first, and that's I don't have to preach at
- 9:07as much right now, but that is my main goal because this is high
- 9:11school sports to me, So academics come first. I think, yes and
- 9:18no. I mean, obviously these guys are used to some structure, and
- 9:20maybe they like structure. But I don't see why we can't do that at
- 9:26you know, a different school and whatnot. I think when you step on
- 9:30the basketball court, who you are as a basketball player is going to show
- 9:33how you do things, how detailed you are. I mean, you know,
- 9:37there's the best basketball players that I know and I've seen i've coached against
- 9:41in high school are just as detailed. When they shake my hand, they
- 9:43look me straight, no, they say they call me coach, they give
- 9:46me a respect level, they do the little things. So to answer your
- 9:52question, yes and no, I've definitely seen there's you know, I have
- 9:56my two years at South Charleston had five years Charleston Catholic. There's positives of
- 10:01both and there's negatives to both as coming from a coach, like how how
- 10:05you respond to your players, what you get out of them, but their
- 10:07everyday lives could be different, right, But a little bit of I mean
- 10:13there's a little bit of every coaching personalities everywhere got you. So let me
- 10:18ask you this as far as you won the Double A title this year,
- 10:24and we'll talk about some of your players later in the show, but you
- 10:28were runner up slash year, so you lost in the title game. Who
- 10:31lost to Chapmanville. Chapmanville, I would say that they were actually a really
- 10:35good team. So what did you learn from that loss moving forward to this
- 10:39season to help you win the championships? Yeah? I think that's a great
- 10:43question because I think the last year's lost really really helped us as a group.
- 10:48We had five starters come back. So from a player and a basketball
- 10:54standpoint, all of those guys got bigger, faster, stronger. Naturally,
- 10:58they got old and they've all been there, They've all played in the big
- 11:03game. Now they understand that the state tournament, that week of distraction is
- 11:05what we call it. They get a little more comfortable. I think that
- 11:11that year that we lost, we're a little too satisfied to be back in
- 11:13the championship game. It was the first time cath I could have been back
- 11:16since I think twenty fourteen, and myself included, we were just too satisfied
- 11:22with, oh my goodness, we're playing in the state championship game. I
- 11:24never played in the state championship game in high school, and obviously I was
- 11:28the first one I coached, so I didn't feel like I was myself that
- 11:33game. I felt like I was. I'm very emotional when I coach,
- 11:37and I didn't show enough emotion, and I told myself this year, I'm
- 11:41going to be myself. I don't you know, I don't care how I'm
- 11:45judged. I don't care how Tell me a little bit about that emotion.
- 11:48Like you say you're emotional as a coach, and you didn't show enough during
- 11:54the game. Give me a description of what that look like sounds like.
- 12:01So when I when I play sports, or when I used to play sports,
- 12:05and now when I coach, I feel like I'm a totally different person.
- 12:09I kind of shy off the court and whatnot. But when I get
- 12:11on the court kind of turn into a different person. And that's why my
- 12:15mom says that all the time. She's like, you are just I don't
- 12:18even know that's a totally different person. I don't know exactly where that comes
- 12:22from. But I'm very passionate about what I do and I'm very detailed,
- 12:26and our practices are so tough, and we go over so many things.
- 12:31We don't want to change. We want to play how we practice. We
- 12:35don't want to go in the game and say, Okay, we're gonna we're
- 12:37gonna close out this way, We're going to you know, make an entry
- 12:39pass this way, We're going to do this, and then when the game
- 12:41comes we don't do it. I have to let them know, hey,
- 12:46what are we doing? Like, I have to let them know that a
- 12:48scream is that it can be. It depends who it is is. Sometimes
- 12:52it sometimes guys that play better when I yell at them, sometimes they don't.
- 12:58To get back more into the champ ship game, I just felt like
- 13:01I was I was still coaching. But these guys can read you. They
- 13:07know me is just as well as I know them. They could see it,
- 13:11and I don't think I just had that passion and energy. Now this
- 13:15year's game, I felt like I was extremely calm though, because it's weird
- 13:18both games Chappinville. We started out the game we went down ten nothing.
- 13:22I told coach with shocking k before the game of Bluefield, if we go
- 13:26if we go down six to nothing, I'm calling a time out. I'm
- 13:28not letting it get to ten. And it was fun with we went down
- 13:31eight nothing to start this year versus Bluefield, our guys responded the right way.
- 13:37I think I was passionate and emotional, but at the same time I
- 13:41was calm. I didn't get on guys too early for little mistakes things like
- 13:45that. I don't even know if that answers your question, but like I
- 13:50just I'm a different person when I coach, and I know that I need
- 13:54to be myself and I know everybody in the stands is watching, but it
- 13:58doesn't matter. You just got to be yourself, just like you're in practice.
- 14:03See it's interesting to me because whether player, coach, or whatever,
- 14:11I don't know where I learned the idea, and I'm curious about your thoughts
- 14:16on this. Hollis too, is like when you shut off everybody, like
- 14:22whether it be the fan base, parents, whomever. Like for me,
- 14:28playing football was playing football, and it was I didn't worry about what a
- 14:35coach is going to say, everything that would happen to me, coach called
- 14:39me, pulled me out, or whatever. That's in that moment for just
- 14:43that second, and then I'm right back into the game, you know.
- 14:48So I don't know if I've ever been for me, I don't know how
- 14:52to even process some of that because I don't. I'm I'm just simply in
- 14:58that moment, you know. I think that is the processing of it.
- 15:01And I know that for example, I felt that probably more as a coach
- 15:05than a player, Like being a player, you get lost in the game,
- 15:09but also you have that same feeling as a coach, like because I
- 15:13know, like at the times when I coached, I was never a head
- 15:16coach. I was, you know, an assistant position coach, but I
- 15:18would I would have things going on in my life outside of that, things
- 15:22you got to deal with before the game or practice, things you gotta deal
- 15:26with after. But while I'm in the game, it would almost be a
- 15:31relief because I would be so into the game there was nothing else. I'm
- 15:35almost to the factory. You're like lost in the game. You're like lost
- 15:39within this this thing, and it's just it's the most beautifulest feeling ever.
- 15:43And I knew, and just to put a cap on it, I knew
- 15:46it was time to stop coaching, because when I was, my mind would
- 15:50start to wonder about other things. I'm starting to hear people in the stands
- 15:52because I can tell you, like, there would be times when I'm coaching,
- 15:56I don't even hear somebody, Like I don't even hear what's going on
- 16:02out there, you know what I mean. So it's it's really a beautiful
- 16:04and the same and the same thing is true to me, Like and I'm
- 16:07curious about what you're going to say to this, Like I was not interested
- 16:11in I didn't when I was at State. I didn't hear a fan,
- 16:18you know, I didn't hear anybody say anything that one year at South Charleston.
- 16:25I can hear it all, And in my mind, I kept thinking
- 16:29to myself, like why am I hearing them? Why am I not?
- 16:33I'm not locked in to the game itself, to to to every single detail
- 16:41that's happening in the game, because if all those details are in your head.
- 16:44I ain't got room for the dude on the fence. But I also
- 16:48think too that there were things happening on our sidelines that drew your attention away,
- 16:55awesoth you know, kids going to the fence, talking to parents and
- 16:59talking to kids, and like I was aware of that. So I felt
- 17:03like that was something that I needed to deal with, which would take me
- 17:06from from the game. I can remember that. I'll just say, I
- 17:10know, I let you respond, coach, but I can remember vividly.
- 17:14You know, I'm coaching. I was a OC and the middle school and
- 17:15I'm coaching. I'm all into it. And I heard somebody say something and
- 17:19I snapped them much, you know, I just I snapped. But it's
- 17:23normal, you know what I'm saying. That's not even normally how I would
- 17:26talk. But I just, you know, I gave something real quick and
- 17:30got right back to it, you know. And it's crazy because you do
- 17:33realize that it's not it's not what you would typically not do there. But
- 17:37I was so into it, like you distracted me, you know, get
- 17:41on. You know. I don't think I was not locked in when we
- 17:45lost. I think I was extremely locked in. But maybe I was too
- 17:48locked in or maybe I don't really know. I just felt like I didn't
- 17:52didn't coach well that day, and I felt like this year I was so
- 17:56Now. Obviously I couldn't eat much of the day of and the whole state
- 18:00tournament, I was super nervous. But I think nervous is before the game
- 18:06is a good thing because you care about it. It's natural, right.
- 18:08But once the game got going, even during warm ups, I felt so
- 18:12more comfortable this year. And it's something that you just can't be todd as
- 18:17experience. And we were trying to shy away from the first year when we
- 18:21lost, Oh we don't have a lot of experience. We were like,
- 18:23oh, that doesn't matter, that doesn't matter. Doesn't Well I think it
- 18:26does, and it's easier to say now after we've won, having a little
- 18:30experience can just calm your nerves a little bit. What if you were to
- 18:36look at you're a top player, and his performance in the first year that
- 18:44you lost, and his performance in the year that you won, this year
- 18:48that you won, could you see his his change in play, and if
- 18:55so, what was that all five of them? I could say that for
- 18:59all five of the starters that came back. I could say that for every
- 19:02single one of those guys, they I don't care about their stat line.
- 19:06I don't even remember what their stat line is for when we lost, and
- 19:08and to be honest, when we won, I can tell when these guys
- 19:14I just know them well. And this year they responded the right way.
- 19:19Down eight points at halftime, right and to a really good blue Field team
- 19:23no shot clock. It's kind of tough when you get down eight or ten
- 19:26points. You know the other team doesn't have to shoot. So and all
- 19:33five of them played from a mental standpoint, they were a lot better.
- 19:37And for example, Jay Allen Turner, you know that was kind of our
- 19:42our I mean, that's our guy. This year he was. It was
- 19:45really good for us and all time leading score at Catholic. Now he only
- 19:51shot the ball three times in the first half, and this is his last
- 19:55game of his career. We know there's no more tomorrow. We go into
- 19:56halftime. Jay, you gotta get more shots. You gotta find more shots.
- 20:00He's really efficient guy, but he stepped out of his comfort zone.
- 20:04He forced a little more action. He still got us into our offense.
- 20:08He played great defense, he hit the boards, little things like that.
- 20:12I mean, you have a guy like Maxwell Cox that his sophomore year we
- 20:17lost at Ravenswood. He missed some free throws. He hit clutch free throws
- 20:21for us this game. Jeff Reynolds our vocal leader. He was constantly talking
- 20:27the whole time. And I don't always tell the guys when you're talking,
- 20:32when we're like, it's not just me. I want to I tell the
- 20:34guys all the time, it's your team. It's your team. I get
- 20:37the I can come back and do this every year. This is your team.
- 20:40Jeff Reynolds constantly talking. Gio Cinco. You might have a turnover,
- 20:45but it's okay. Keep playing. Zayan Ranson, who was only a sophomore,
- 20:51is a grown man. I mean the rebounds that he gets. He
- 20:53hit some big shots and big free throws. I think he actually let us
- 20:56in scoring. And to be honest with he's a passer. First. I
- 21:00told him forty game, you have to shoot. All five of those guys
- 21:03stepped up from the previous year. And that's from just maturity. They've been
- 21:07here before. They know what to do. And I want to talk about
- 21:11because we had coach Pat Jones coaching Nitro, he won the Triple A title
- 21:18this year, and what he talked about a lot was his coaching staff.
- 21:22And I'm starting to see a theme here. You know, he had some
- 21:25definitely some some og veteran legend coaches in the area. And you have sort
- 21:30of that same relationship that he has to his assistance, where you guys were
- 21:34friends on and off the court court. It's not just a co worker quote
- 21:38unquote relationship. So talk about how important those your your your coaching staff is
- 21:45in order to get this championship. We can't do anything great by yourself,
- 21:49like you just can't. You have to have great people around you. And
- 21:53with Shaq and k Devin Harris, like I said, I grew up with
- 21:56them. And then Ricky Nelson who teaches at the he brings a great aspect.
- 22:02He played football at Fairmont, went to Capitol High School and just brings
- 22:07a good administrative point to us. But I gave a lot of credit and
- 22:12I tried to give as much credit as I can because I felt like our
- 22:15halftime adjustments were huge in the championship game. And that came from Rashad and
- 22:19Devin. Like Rashad was saying, Hey, this is what we need to
- 22:22get into keep the ball off the side, keep it in the middle.
- 22:26He pointed out to the team, we haven't shot one free throw in the
- 22:29first half. We got to get to the free throw line, and the
- 22:32guys did that. Devin made some huge points about matchups we need to get
- 22:37keep Jalen on r J. Harrison's throwing that off a little bit. His
- 22:41athleticism keeps Jayden on the shooter. Let Jeff go on Gore Like, that's
- 22:47all Devin Harris, right, And that's what I mean by And maybe I
- 22:49should clarify the head coach gets all the The head coach maybe gets too much
- 22:56praise when you win, and maybe takes too much blame when lose. Right,
- 23:00I think it's a team effort. I don't. I mean, I
- 23:03just I don't think it's it's just not about me. And without those guys,
- 23:08this thing doesn't happen. Right, Like, if you go to practice
- 23:11every day and they hear the Sam exact voice all the time, they're gonna
- 23:15get tired of that. They need they need Sean and Dev to talk to
- 23:18them individually. I kind of what we explain it is. I might look
- 23:22at the overall picture five on five they really get into the detail of a
- 23:26jay work on this move. I see you can do this even at halftime.
- 23:30I can see Devin out here a you know go. And those guys
- 23:33were guards. I played more as a big man or forward, so we
- 23:37get a little bit of every position in that. I just I love coaching
- 23:41with them. I love I mean, I get to it's like us hanging
- 23:44out. This is what we love to do. We love to coach,
- 23:45we love to talk x's and o's, and we get to do it all
- 23:48the time. It's interesting to me, And I'm curious about what you think
- 23:53to this, because I get passion, I get emotion and all of those
- 23:59kinds of things. But I'm watching whether it be middle school, you know,
- 24:04the higher level of youth sports and you and you get like, there's
- 24:11a couple of our kids that are super talented in our youth basketball All Star
- 24:18program. And but any kind of pressure, any kind of like you know,
- 24:26throw the ball out of bounds or get a call on it, they're
- 24:30in tears. Where do where? When does that is there an idea of
- 24:37that's just going to naturally stop? Because I never I don't know that time
- 24:41when I was growing up because if you were doing that, you were you
- 24:44know, you were getting joked and so you didn't like we didn't have that.
- 24:48That's something that I see now. Is that a parent child issue or
- 24:53is that a child issue? Or is that a coach child issue. I
- 25:00think every situation is different, and I think sometimes it could be either one
- 25:06of those or all of those. It just depends for for every for every
- 25:10person. Just like talking for myself, I think I was didn't know how
- 25:15to channel that emotion when I was younger and powdered too much. But I
- 25:18don't know if it was my mom and dad. I mean, obviously I
- 25:22think it was mainly them because I'm with them the most and they're telling me,
- 25:26you know, you gotta you know X, Y and Z. But
- 25:29had some good coaches you have to understand as a player. And maybe it
- 25:33is with age too, right, you're talking about some younger, younger people,
- 25:37Maybe they're not ready for that. But if we're constantly putting into her
- 25:40brain, maybe they'll learn it a little quicker. Adversity is gonna come.
- 25:45How you're gonna handle it. You're not gonna play a perfect game. No
- 25:48one's ever gonna play a perfect game. We didn't play a perfect game last
- 25:51Saturday, and we won a state championship. You're not gonna play a perfect
- 25:53game. It is what it is. It's how you respond to mistakes.
- 25:57We only we only call a mistake if you don't learn from it. Little
- 26:00stuff like that. So if we can pro like kind of not program,
- 26:04but start teaching them at a younger age, maybe of these little things that
- 26:08the sports is more than just your skill and your physicality. I mean it
- 26:12is. That's the odd test, right. You know, Lebron's Lebron because
- 26:15of his body, right, but mentally Lebron is Lebron because mentally he's at
- 26:19a different level. So that we got to start training more on the mental
- 26:25side and not so much dribble through the cone and shoot a step back all
- 26:29the time. Mentally. Getting these boys and girls tougher will will help them
- 26:34in the long run, because guess what, not all of us are gonna
- 26:37play professional sports. Most of us aren't. Most of us aren't even going
- 26:41to play in college. So what's the point of this. The point is
- 26:44to teach them life lessons through the sport. That's what sports are so great
- 26:48about. We're not all gonna be champions. We're not all gonna get paid
- 26:52to play. So there's a bigger picture to that. Is there something Is
- 26:56there something that we might want to do at the rec center prior to our
- 27:04sports programs with parents and the and the kids, trying to explain to them
- 27:11this is just an opportunity. The City of South Charleston is just providing you
- 27:15an opportunity to participate in sports and learn some of these life lessons. And
- 27:21and it's it's not even the competitiveness. It's not even about the wins and
- 27:26losses as much as it is about teaching your children a sport or these sports
- 27:33and having fun. Because if if mom and dad is going crazy from the
- 27:38bleachers and and you know, and and you see, I mean, you
- 27:42know how the whole thing is going somewhere, We've got to we've got to
- 27:47turn this thing back the other way. If we want if we want the
- 27:51if we want these kids to get a message to learn something, we've got
- 27:57to teach the people in the bleachers with something first. And maybe maybe even
- 28:03some of the coaches. I think that's a hard sell. You gotta you
- 28:08gotta focus on the coaches because I can't regulate I can't coach mom and dad
- 28:14unfortunately. So I think that if you're going to have that sort of conversation,
- 28:18it has to start with the coaches, and the coaches have to be
- 28:22the one, like coach Moses said, like, they have to be the
- 28:26one that constantly say that, because if I'm constantly saying something, it's gonna
- 28:30stick eventually. You know, I can't really worry about what the parents are
- 28:33doing or they're not doing. That's just the uncontrollable. But I think if
- 28:37you can control the control, which is the coaches, I don't know if
- 28:41I'm trying to control them. I'm just thinking that I want to let them
- 28:44know what what what is the purpose of the sport itself? You know,
- 28:49it seems like a fruitless conversation. If they're gonna listen, if they're going
- 28:56to buy in, and that's everyone's opinion they can have, they can listen
- 28:59who to want to. So both of you are correct, it's going to
- 29:02be difficult either way. Does it hurt to try to give them that talk
- 29:07and and not and tell them you're coming from a good space. I think
- 29:11positivity and negativity is contagious. If you're coming off and you're trying to boss
- 29:15people around and tell them no, do this, do this, do this.
- 29:18Naturally, sometimes I don't want to listen to this, Go wat should
- 29:21I listen? So if you can show them like, hey, you know,
- 29:25buy into this, good things will happen for your son or daughter and
- 29:29you'll learn that way. But it's definitely a difficult conversation when the kids are
- 29:34so young. I'm lucky because I talk about middle I think middle school is
- 29:37one of the hardest age as a coach. I think it's hard to adapt
- 29:41to kids are in that in between stage of am I going to take this
- 29:45serious? Am I not? And I think high school for me is a
- 29:48little bit easier to get through, to be honest with you. So and
- 29:52the youth is talk about coaches. I mean a lot of these coaches are
- 29:56just somebody's somebody's mom or dad that that's hopping in because they don't have somebody.
- 30:00So it is big, But can we do a better job of maybe
- 30:06putting them through it's just the time part of it too, But giving them
- 30:10a coach's clinic, giving them a thirty minute you know something, a video
- 30:14or a talk about you know this professional says this is the best way.
- 30:18There's definitely things we can try to do, but at the end of the
- 30:21day, everyone's gonna have to buy in. Everybody's gonna have to want to
- 30:25get better mentally, tough wise, not just Okay, well we're doing this,
- 30:30we're running this play in this play and this play. Do I remember
- 30:33and biddy ball or whatnot? If we won? Yeah, I do remember
- 30:38we won, But I can't tell you the score. I can't tell you
- 30:41how many points I had. I can't tell you all that stuff that's gone.
- 30:45But I can tell you that the times that my mom was so mad
- 30:48at me when I got in the car because I acted the wrong way and
- 30:52I was acting like just I was just pounting. Basically. I remember the
- 30:56times when coaches would would try to to me and stuff. I don't.
- 31:00I think if we can understand that that you're there is things that these these
- 31:06kids are gonna remember. But it's not always a score. Yeah, I
- 31:08mean I still got the trophy somewhere, probably right, But I mean,
- 31:14if the lesson, it's the lessons. If winning the third grade championships the
- 31:18biggest thing you accomplished in life, what are we doing right? You gotta
- 31:21keep working like somebody just talking to somebody. Coach Amy Mallin, she's the
- 31:26women's soccer coach at Charleston Catholic SORR. This morning, she just won.
- 31:29Can you do me? Favorite, Just hold that just for a second,
- 31:30and we'll bring you back in as soon as we come out with this break.

- 32:15We just needed a quick break. I didn't want to interrupt Hunter, but
- 32:17Hunter jump back into kind of I think you were closing out on my thoughts
- 32:22about having a discussion with parents about you know, what the expectations should be,
- 32:30and you were kind of closing that out, but go ahead. Yeah,
- 32:32it's bigger than the game of basketball. And I'm just talking about for
- 32:36basketball because it's in my sport, whatever sport you're playing, but it's bigger
- 32:38than basketball. And was talking to coach Amy Mallins, she's won five straight
- 32:43girls state championships at the girl soccer team at Charleston Catholic, and she says,
- 32:47you know, that's a great feeling, isn't it. She says,
- 32:50how do you get back there? And that's exactly what we're thinking about.
- 32:52How do we get back there? How do we get this feeling again?
- 32:55So if all we're worried about is just winning now, winning that third grade
- 33:00or whatever, we got to teach them that there's more. You gotta keep
- 33:02working, win or lose, you have to keep going. So maybe we
- 33:07got to focus more on the mental side teaching our kids. You know,
- 33:09we got to keep going, win or lose, you're gonna have to move
- 33:14on. Let me ask you this, as far as the structure Catholic,
- 33:20you have the middle school in the high school all in one building. Yeah,
- 33:23essentially, so do you as the coach of the high school, do
- 33:29you coach the middle school as well or what's that relationship. Yeah, they
- 33:32got separate coaches. Obviously, I try to not get involved, but I
- 33:37try to watch as bunch as I can. I want to see what we
- 33:39have coming up. This senior class I had now was actually the first class
- 33:44I've had from freshman to senior. So that makes it special for me because
- 33:46I've seen I remember watching Jaellen Turner, Jeff Reynolds, j Justsein Brammer,
- 33:52Gio Sinko in middle school and going to their games, and I was sitting
- 33:55next to Marshall Pile and Thomas Blade and Aiden Satterfield AND's Island Soueth where like,
- 34:00Hey, this guy is gonna be good. He's gonna do this and
- 34:02this, and so we we do those type of things. But I'm not
- 34:07they have their own coach. I'm not telling them what to run. I'm
- 34:09not telling them how to run their practice things like that. Some of the
- 34:14kids, like I talked about middle schools that weird aays are figuring things out.
- 34:17A lot of kids are play in middle school, don't play in high
- 34:20school. And that's fine, that's not a discredit to to me or anything
- 34:22like that. That's just that's not what they want to put their time into.
- 34:25Because we put a lot of time into this. I mean it's Monday
- 34:29through Saturday. I mean we're doing stuff the whole time, and and that's
- 34:32just November to March out of the season is really when you get the work
- 34:37in. So middle school's got their own role, just like at h at
- 34:39the Kenall County schools at the public level. What what give me a little
- 34:45bit about your off off season programs, Like what do you what do you
- 34:52spend your time on and focus on most? Is it getting bigger, stronger,
- 34:58faster, all of those kind of things, or is it in part
- 35:01also you know, the structure of how you want to play the game coming
- 35:07in in the in the season. So it's kind of changed from last year.
- 35:12We at Catholic we have a lot of multa sport athletes. I think
- 35:15I only had on this year's team two or three guys that only play basketball.
- 35:20Out of nineteen players, I think two or three of them only play
- 35:22basketball. So do you support that you encourage you saw the bio right,
- 35:29of course I support that. I played it in college where no one told
- 35:31me I would be able to do it and keep my grades up and play
- 35:35and actually get playing time. So yeah, I supported one hundred percent.
- 35:39But I think three sports is a lot in high school. I think two
- 35:44is one thing, but I think three is kind of tough. I'll put
- 35:47that out there, but that it just depends the kid in the sport.
- 35:52The summertime, we want to get bigger, faster, stronger. We had
- 35:55weightlifting, and we had you know, certain guys were coming, certain guys
- 36:01weren't. Sometimes its because they're in a different season. I don't think I
- 36:06lifted weights enough when I was in high school. I think I could have
- 36:08been a lot, you know, a lot better if I would have lifted
- 36:12more. It's just getting getting over those first two weeks, getting your body
- 36:16real sore, and getting into a routine if you can stay with that routine.
- 36:21So we would lift weights leading up to the season. We used to
- 36:24have that three week period right like where you can practice. They just took
- 36:28that away and now you have thirty two flex days and you use that how
- 36:31you want to. So we would have the three week period where we would
- 36:35have freshmen coming in that don't know how we practice. You mentioned do we
- 36:39work on how we play? We don't really. We said we're working how
- 36:44we practice. We're setting the tone of this is how we practice. Here's
- 36:46our base drills that we're probably going to do a lot. Let's teach them
- 36:51how we close out. Let's teach them, you know, the details,
- 36:53how we rip through, how we do practice. Like I was talking about
- 36:58earlier, I want to get them to learn in the three week period or
- 37:00our flex days, this is how we practice. Then when practice officially starts,
- 37:06we get into those x's and those here's your secondary break, here's your
- 37:10offense and whatnot. Our most important drill is shell drill four v four defense.
- 37:15We take pride in defense and rebounding, So we start showing them breaking
- 37:20them, breaking it down a little bit in the summertime, so when official
- 37:24practice starts, we can try to hit that thing running a little bit,
- 37:29not so much five on five and whatnot. More skill development. But you
- 37:34go to these shootouts and play two which can be good, can be bad.
- 37:37I mean last year, last summer, we didn't have all of our
- 37:40guys. We went to the shootout, we were good. We were losing
- 37:43every game. We just want to state championship. So I don't think winning
- 37:45and losing those shootouts in the summer really matter the score. I think it's
- 37:50just for development of your team and you get to see new guys that maybe
- 37:53you haven't seen play against other people. That's a good point, Hollis,
- 38:00if you had to pick two sports that you you know, I played three
- 38:06sports. I ran track, but all all of mine were specific basketball,
- 38:09football, and track. Yeah, and and and I use those all for
- 38:15football. You know, I can tell you right now, whatever sports you
- 38:21play, run track. I think to me, track is the sport that
- 38:29off I think elite athletes are picking it back up those athletes who actually are
- 38:36have professional dreams, who have power five. But you go through the South,
- 38:39all the skilled football player, even the big guys, they all run
- 38:43track, throw hammer whatever. To me, if you are a serious soccer
- 38:47player, football player, even a basketball player, to me, I think
- 38:52it is critical and should be mandatory that you run track because I think it
- 38:57helps with athletic development. If you're bigger, like you said, faster,
- 39:00stronger, and track can get you there. We talked about last week.
- 39:04When you look at those hundred meter runners, now when you look at the
- 39:07four hundred to two hundred meter guys. They don't look These ain't the slim
- 39:10guys. These look like running backs. These guys have quad as big as
- 39:15your head. So I think, to me, if I had to pick
- 39:19whatever other sport you're playing, if you're playing baseball player, run track,
- 39:22if you're a tennis run track. I think just track or even cross country
- 39:27to me are critical the concept of focusing on a sport. And we haven't
- 39:37really dived into that piece of it. But if I don't know any great
- 39:46athlete, any great athlete that's come out of the state of West Virginia or
- 39:52really anywhere, who specifically focused on one sport. Yeah, I you look
- 40:00at the guys that went Division one from South Charles and our coach, you
- 40:02look at Trey Dunn, Bosley, Mondre, Harris Conley, you looked at
- 40:10you know, all those guys. All those guys were two and three sport
- 40:14athletes and every single one of them. So where where is the who made
- 40:17the first comment of focusing on one sport and then everybody was thinking, oh,
- 40:22my kids, just a basketball. I think I think that probably in
- 40:25the last probably twenty years, it's one of them things that got brought up.
- 40:30But I think that's slowly dying. I think people are realizing that.
- 40:34You think it's going to do you think it's yeah, I think it is.
- 40:36I think you're realizing now because I think what happened was I think you
- 40:39had this big emergence of these trainers, and I'll say quote unquote trainers who
- 40:45it was to their benefit to say, hey, only focus on this and
- 40:47then instead of playing that other sport, you could just train with me all
- 40:51year. But I think what people are realizing is that, for example,
- 40:54if I'm a basketball player, that is the ultimate football basketball. These are
- 40:59team sports, team games, and I think that you know, you need
- 41:04to have something else besides that, like a track, even a swimming or
- 41:07even a baseball where you have that single like it's just me like So that
- 41:14way, I think not only can you develop athletically, but you also develop
- 41:17a mentality that you have to take care of your business because when you're running
- 41:22a hundred men, you've been there before two hundred meters. Hey, bro,
- 41:24ain't no ain't no tagging, Ain't nobody else gonna come and say you
- 41:28if you get dusted, it's just you and everybody seeing you humping the puff
- 41:32for the last place, and I don't know and see, to me,
- 41:36I think track is the hardest. I think the reason why track is numbers
- 41:40are down because I don't want hundred outrun me. And then I got you.
- 41:45That's what I'm about to say that I don't want it. I don't
- 41:46want I don't want anybody to see that. To me, it's the ultimate.
- 41:52Track to me, is the ultimate competition because it's a lot most of
- 41:55those sports, even if you take the relays for your poortial, it's just
- 42:00you. But it's just you. Ain't nobody else coming to save you.
- 42:04And and and I ran track my senior year in because again I college in
- 42:08college, and and you couldn't do it in football in college because you had
- 42:16springball. And so once I got to be, you know, a senior
- 42:21before I was, you know, the whole draft and all that kind of
- 42:23stuff, I jumped into in the track and you know, I'm running a
- 42:30hundred to two hundred and and and and coach got me into the in the
- 42:35four by four, and I was like, man, I'm not interested in
- 42:39you know, I'm not in this for this that that doesn't apply to me.
- 42:43I'm just trying to be fast right, you know. And here's the
- 42:45crazy thing. I wasn't winning the hundred. I wasn't winning the two hundred.
- 42:51So his thoughts were get better at the four hundred. Well, my
- 42:55whole my whole football training and my off season training down to the state.
- 43:02So that's who we blame for that, that's who we blame. That track
- 43:07comes und Yes, look Jesus, that was all I mean you your test
- 43:13coming into stated was four four four hundreds, four two hundreds and for one
- 43:19hundred lord with you know, minute minute and a half in between and you
- 43:23and look, I'm telling you some of the best athletes ever. And I
- 43:30hate to put that. I hate to put v out there like that Cunningham.
- 43:36You know, so if you're listening, it's all respect. But we
- 43:39had him been over like he he fell over into the inside of the track
- 43:45like he was dying. Yeah. I've seen Look, I've seen dudes like
- 43:50just just sleep like at they sleep on the field. Throw it up.
- 43:57I've seen it all out. Yeah, And I don't know if we understand
- 44:01that type of commitment that players make and want to make, because if you
- 44:09can make the case how many kids, let's assume that you're v okay and
- 44:15you're stretched out or balled up into a little ball inside of the track,
- 44:20sick as a dog. Why don't you quit? Yeah, most I'm gonna
- 44:25make the case that today, that child or that child's parent, it's thinking
- 44:31he's crazy. We ain't. We ain't doing this. We're going today.
- 44:36I think today, I think and and coach can answer this. I think
- 44:40if you have a commitment to winning, if you have you know, a
- 44:45program, a coach that you respect, and somebody who you feel could take
- 44:50you to that level, I think I think you can get that out.
- 44:52I think you've probably gotten more out of kids than maybe what you thought.
- 44:55No, definitely, we've had some guys that definitely like work really hard.
- 45:00I just think there's levels to all of it. Right, Like you're going
- 45:02to play in college is a different than you know you're doing that at middle
- 45:06school. It depends how much you want it. That's real. It is
- 45:08because I remember going up to Tech you had to make the two mile time.
- 45:13We had a two mile time for soccer, two mile time bill players.
- 45:17I played goalie thankfully because film players had to make it in thirteen minutes.
- 45:22You had two miles and thirteen goalies had to make it in fourteen thirty.
- 45:25Oh, I made the time. I'm trying to get three miles in
- 45:30thirty minutes. Hey, I made the time the first time. But I
- 45:36was like, I was like, v over there that I got. Two
- 45:37of my friends, Tyler Faby and Craig Mitchell, they say, to this
- 45:42day, my first memory is looking over at Herr Moles and this pale,
- 45:45little red headed kid, and they said, we thought he was gonna die.
- 45:49You had to make two miles and fourteen I moved in. I moved
- 45:52in, moved in that day and they were like, yeah, we got
- 45:55the two mile. Later, I said, today we just moved in.
- 45:59We had to do it TODAYB thirty up at the fifth. So yeah,
- 46:04it depends how much do you want it. And I don't know if and
- 46:07whether we call it old school new school, and I'm just gonna separate it
- 46:13by saying that's old school. I don't know if new school understands that kind
- 46:16of commitment. I think I think it's levels. I don't know if maybe
- 46:22I think maybe there was a different maybe earlier later. I think it's levels.
- 46:27I think depending on who you are now again, maybe as a masses
- 46:31no, but it's levels too now because I got guys right now that they
- 46:36might not go playing college and they probably are getting they might know that.
- 46:39But I got some guys at work, man, they're workers, they work.
- 46:43So it's not everybody, but there is levels to it. Let me
- 46:46ask you, like, being a two sport athlete at the collegiate level,
- 46:52what was your mentality far as going from soccer, which is rigorous. You
- 46:59know, it's constant running, it's constant moving in motion and being and I
- 47:02would say probably goalies maybe one of the most mentally agonizing positions to play in
- 47:08sports, right, you know what I mean? Because really again, it's
- 47:12one of them things where it's kind of all on you. I mean,
- 47:14I'm sure there's some team there, but going from that to hooping, Like,
- 47:20what was the mentality that you have? So before I get in there,
- 47:22you bring up a really good point and maybe that's where some of my
- 47:24coaching philosophy comes from. To your very original question, is being a goalie?
- 47:30You know, I grew up being a goalie. Goalkeeper training is so
- 47:32hard. One on one, dive and get up, dive and get up.
- 47:37I mean you're doing that for sixty minutes you're doing all that just to
- 47:39be ready to make one save in the game. You're either the hero you
- 47:44made the save or you got scored on and it's your fault. You lost
- 47:47the game because you let a goal in. So maybe that's where my mentality
- 47:51comes from, too, is being a goalie bestally my whole life. That
- 47:53one time when we was little, I guess they said he wants to play
- 47:55goalie, and I was like, I do it, and I just jumped
- 47:58in there and ever since I was doing it. But Uh, to your
- 48:01college question, I had coaches that were letting me do this. And I'm
- 48:07gonna say this, we got coaches right now. You say it's trainers,
- 48:12it's also coaches that want their guys and girls to only play one sport.
- 48:15That's a good point. They only want to play one sport. Jay Allen
- 48:19Turner comes to me before in the summer, says, coach, I'm thinking
- 48:22about playing soccer this year. He hadn't played all high school, but he
- 48:25grew up playing soccer through middle school. He hadn't played senior year. Wants
- 48:29to go play soccer. Jay, I don't think it's the best decision because
- 48:32it's going to take time away from you getting in the gym. But if
- 48:36you are passionate about it, go do it. Go win a state chip.
- 48:39They lost in the in the final in PKS. He was just starting
- 48:42forward, right. I'm going to encourage him because that's what he wants to
- 48:45do. It's bigger than basketball. He's playing with his lifelong friends, and
- 48:52it's bigger than that. So when I had coaches that were bought in that,
- 48:58when I went to school for preseason soccer, I might if I had
- 49:01a day, I'd go watch basketball practice. Coach Williams didn't make me practice.
- 49:06He didn't say you have to go do this, dude. Now,
- 49:08if I could shoot some, I would try, but my body would be
- 49:13so banged up during the season and we're traveling all the time and classes.
- 49:15It was tough. So you know, let's say our season finished on Saturday.
- 49:22Hey, coach, get me Sunday off. I'll be there Monday.
- 49:23That would he said, take as much time as you need. But me,
- 49:27I'm right back into it. Also, I adjusted well because my basketball
- 49:31game is team oriented and I'm not no big time volume shooter score I'm a
- 49:37rebounder. I'm gonna take charges, I'm gonna die for loose balls. I'm
- 49:39gonna play hard. I'm gonna pick up the plays the first time you show
- 49:43it to me. So it's easy to adjust. And I probably already know
- 49:45him because I came and watched them in practice. So I'm fine with defending.
- 49:50I don't care about scoring. I'll take a lay up once you you
- 49:53know, hit me off of a drive or whatnot. So I wasn't the
- 49:57main guy on the basketball court either. So that's a little different from being
- 50:00a twenty point scorer or you know, you're playing a little bit bigger role.
- 50:05Not saying my role wasn't big, It's just it's different. I could
- 50:07just come in and physically just work my butt off the coach. And I
- 50:13think the guys I didn't go through preseason with basketball, some of them had
- 50:16to feel a certain type of way, Hey, why does this guy get
- 50:19to come in and he didn't go through all this running with this. I
- 50:22think when you run with each other, you naturally get closer, like when
- 50:27you go through those workouts and then you go to the calf afterwards and you
- 50:30sit there and like, oh my goodness, I can't believe we just had
- 50:32to do that. But I had to come into basketball out of soccer and
- 50:37show these guys, hey, I'm here to work. So I just had
- 50:40to really work hard. And I didn't care about starting. I didn't think
- 50:45I was going to start. They've already played like three or four games basketball
- 50:47before I even came back to the team from soccer. I don't care about
- 50:51starting. I just want to win, that's all. I just want to
- 50:53win. And so hopefully that answers your question. That's beautiful. Yeah,
- 50:58and challenge. And I think too, I think one of the hard things
- 51:01to do for kids now coming through the system is understanding that there is there
- 51:08is a time that you might not be the best player, and Quentin is
- 51:13not the is not the option. Sit on that bench, you know,
- 51:17practice and get better so that at some point you're going you're gonna be able
- 51:23to be, let's say, a starter in in two different sports, you
- 51:28know, because I don't see. My problem is, I don't know if
- 51:31we have the patience, Like I'm not. I'm not coming to play quarterback
- 51:37at at State because Hollis is there. Yeah, I gotta sit for two
- 51:42years. I agree. I agree. I'm saying I think I think that
- 51:45we feel we need that instant gratification to secure our own idea of how good
- 51:54we are. And can I say this was a four year basketball start at
- 51:59rushing attach also play with shot in college, they brought in a different point
- 52:04guard every summer. You gotta earn your spot every year when it comes to
- 52:07college. It's not like, oh, well I'm the guy now, No,
- 52:12we're bringing in another guy in the summer and you gotta win your job
- 52:15again. And see, and I think we're teaching I think we're teaching the
- 52:17young kids totally the opposite type of thing that the success that you want them
- 52:27ultimately to have in college get its college scholarship. It doesn't line itself up
- 52:35what you're trying, what you're teaching them with, how you're acting, how
- 52:37you're teaching them does not line up with college. Because man, you can
- 52:42go to college and you can sit two years. I mean, and let's
- 52:45just assume that you go to Alabama back with in a Nick saban era,
- 52:50you could you could sit for two years behind an All American who's gonna get
- 52:54a be a first round draft pick. You mad you gonna leave, yeah,
- 53:00because at some point you gonna be that guy and somebody else is gonna
- 53:04be sitting behind you, and I just don't like, I don't understand,
- 53:07and I can't. I don't know if I could express it in a way
- 53:12to say playing isn't everything sometimes learning, sitting and watching is everything. I
- 53:20mean, for me, I watched Robert Alexander train. He talked to me
- 53:25about how he would do it, how he would feel. I wanted to
- 53:31feel that way, you know what I'm saying. I'm like, Okay,
- 53:34I'm gonna start training that way, and I want to feel that pain that
- 53:37he's feeling. I don't think we want that now like I think we want
- 53:43our individual opportunities. I want to start in youth football. I'm gonna go
- 53:50to middle school and I'm gonna start in middle school, and I'm gonna go
- 53:52to high school. I'm gonna start in high school all four years. I'm
- 53:55gonna get a D one scholarship, and I'm gonna go to college and I'm
- 54:00gonna start. If all that is true and you get to college, you're
- 54:02gonna be shocked when you get to college because you're gonna have no idea because
- 54:09they're not bringing you in as a freshman to be a player. Rarely and
- 54:17tell me for you think I'm wrong. Rarely is especially in the d one.
- 54:22Rarely are you are you being brought in given a scholarship to become a
- 54:27starter. As a friend, I got very I got very, very lucky
- 54:31when I went to Western Tech for soccer that the goalie beforehand was a senior.
- 54:37But like they're all their goalies were seniors. So I come into a
- 54:42fresh class where we have you know, really two we had three goalies,
- 54:45but two fighting for that starting spot as freshmen. That doesn't happen a lot,
- 54:49you get what I'm saying, So we don't have a when you're going
- 54:52in as a freshman, like I was trying to tell Aiden Satterfield this all
- 54:57the time, like, hey man, you might go in red shirt.
- 54:59There's nothing wrong with that practice and there is nothing wrong with that. I
- 55:01also think Jaalen Turner was a freshman when he had Aiden, Saturfill and Zion
- 55:06that were seniors that helped him learn how to do these things. Like you're
- 55:09saying, you had someone to look up to. Like I said in the
- 55:14beginning, you have to surround yourself with great people. You can't do it
- 55:16by yourself. And to that point, like I said, you mentioned Saturfield,
- 55:21you mentioned Zion, those were those are some of the best players in
- 55:25the valley during the area and you probably had maybe, if not the best
- 55:30player, maybe one of the best players in the valley in the state for
- 55:32that matter, in Turner. Just talk about him a little bit before we
- 55:37go in far as where you see him projecting and going in the future.
- 55:40For Jay Allen, Yeah, I mean he's special, man, He really
- 55:45is. He's really special. He he's such a good human being off the
- 55:52court. That's what I love about him the most. He's so humble,
- 55:55Like you're giving him all these credit and you can go and we have a
- 55:59whole show just and all of his accomplishments. But he's so humble. He's
- 56:02a good person, like he's when we do stuff with the kids. He's
- 56:06good at that stuff. His college decision is still up in the air.
- 56:09It's wide open, to be dead and honest with you. And I'm very,
- 56:14very biased, and I just don't understand why he's not getting a little
- 56:17more looks. I'm educated enough that know the transfer portal plays a big role.
- 56:22People who are in win now, and I know a college coach,
- 56:27you know that's that's their income, for their family. They gotta win.
- 56:30So if they might not have Tom to take a chance, Tom to develop
- 56:35somebody. I'll tell you before the show. J Allen's young for his class.
- 56:37So can you imagine if he was a junior this year. Can you
- 56:40imagine if he gets into a good program Red Shirts develops, learns the way
- 56:45they practice works on his body. I mean you have to as a player,
- 56:50though, No I go from the top spotlight, I go from winning
- 56:52the state championship. He's gonna get all these awards. Now you got to
- 56:55go back to the bottom and you got it. You got it. You
- 57:00gotta work your way in two or three years. I think mister Shadowfield seeing
- 57:02that now a little bit he had to work. Now he's getting back into
- 57:07the news. Now he's getting back into the big shot at YEP University.
- 57:10So he had a good end of his year this year. But ain't will
- 57:15tell you it was hard the first couple of years coming off from being that
- 57:19captain first team on state. Like you, you're playing a lot of different
- 57:22people and naturally it takes a little time. So he's gonna have to to
- 57:27buy into that if that's his role. But a lot of Division twos,
- 57:30lots of looks, lots of offers, but still wide open. And what
- 57:35I like about Turner is, like I said, and I told you this
- 57:37before the show, coach, he can play in the post, he can
- 57:40play on the wing, he finishes well around the realm, and he also
- 57:45is a defensive guy, defensive minded player. So I'm by so I would
- 57:49love to see him in that black and gold, you know. And I
- 57:51think I think we can really build around him in the future, and I
- 57:54think he can he can help us go far. So just spitting that out
- 57:59there, I'm gonna say, I don't think you're hitting that. That's very
- 58:04clear. I think Hunter, I appreciate it. Man. I hope we
- 58:08can get you back here, you know. And and good luck coming going
- 58:13into the season. When do you guys start your training your off season training,
- 58:17Well, we got to figure out because it's different now without the three
- 58:20week so without the three week period, we want to figure out how we
- 58:22want to use our flex days, trying to do some shootouts, trying to
- 58:27do right after baseball gets done, so June starts, well, we'll try
- 58:30to do some shootouts and then soon as school gets back started, we're you
- 58:35know, lifting, running, and flex days every Friday. So really,
- 58:38as soon as school starts we start to get after it. All right,
- 58:43ladies and gentlemen, we appreciate your time. We're getting ready to get out
- 58:45of here, so we will get back with you again. So the opinions
