- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical Crossroads, The
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink,
- 0:13and I'm your host, Will Walden. SpaceX is currently testing
- 0:18their Starship Booster and Starship Vehicle 25 at Boca
- 0:22Chica Starbase, Texas, and they've achieved a new milestone
- 0:26by conducting static fire tests for both stages of its Starship
- 0:30rocket system on the same day. This comes as the year ends for
- 0:36SpaceX with a remarkable 96 space missions, and is now
- 0:40gearing up for an important third orbital test flight of the
- 0:43Starship, potentially including a payload deployment.
- 0:47This is kind of a new thing so Starship, which is notable for
- 0:51being the world's largest rocket, so its upper and its
- 0:54first stages tested separately. And in a rare occurrence, SpaceX
- 0:57carried out static fire tests for both the first stage Super
- 1:00Heavy booster and the upper stage Starship rocket on the
- 1:04same day. And while the specifics of the
- 1:06engine tests are not fully disclosed, it's understood that
- 1:09at least one engine on the Starship second stage was fired.
- 1:13This stage is also integral to NASA's Artemis program for
- 1:17landing astronauts on the Moon, heightening the importance of
- 1:20these tests. Now detailed observations of the
- 1:25second stage testing revealed that the ignition of the single
- 1:28stage Raptor engine was particular test demonstration of
- 1:32a flight like startup which is essential for in space burns.
- 1:37Now, such specific testing is critical in assessing the
- 1:40Starship's capabilities for actual space missions,
- 1:43especially considering the precision required for in space
- 1:46maneuvers and burns. And this test as to the
- 1:49speculations about Starship's upcoming test flight, which may
- 1:53include launching A payload into space and demonstrate Spacex's
- 1:56focus on replicating real time mission conditions in its tests
- 2:03now, the Starship program began all the way back in 2020.
- 2:06It's actually longer ago that like 2016 actually started this
- 2:10thing. But down at Boca Chica it's
- 2:12around 2020 and it's been marked with rapid progress and
- 2:15development and testing. And over the years, the company
- 2:18has introduced new Raptor engines, upgraded a super heavy
- 2:21booster, improve the launchpad water deluge system, and
- 2:25streamline its whole production process.
- 2:28And these advancements show that SpaceX is ready to go for the
- 2:32Artemis 3 mission. The manufacturing process is
- 2:36critical for Spacex's strategy to realize its ambitious goals
- 2:40with Starship. Elon Musk has emphasized the
- 2:43necessity of producing at least 100 Starships annually to
- 2:46support the company's Mars colonizations plans.
- 2:49A super heavy booster is designed to return to the launch
- 2:52site within minutes of the launch, but the second stage
- 2:55Starship takes considerably longer, necessitating a higher
- 2:59production rate of starships Now to manage the expected launch
- 3:02frequency, SpaceX is also expanding its infrastructure by
- 3:06constructing a second launch site in Texas.
- 3:09The success of today's static fire test is a huge step towards
- 3:13the upcoming third flight test, and this next phase will involve
- 3:17comprehensive evaluations including full stack
- 3:20integration, ship and booster inspections, pad checks and any
- 3:24necessary repairs to the spacecraft.
- 3:27And Elon Musk recently announced via X, formerly known as
- 3:30Twitter, the completion of a static fire test of the Flight 3
- 3:34Super Heavy booster. Now these tests are critical to
- 3:37verify the functionality of the entire system, encompassing
- 3:41ground equipment, vehicle engines in both external and
- 3:46internal plumbing. Now responding to a user on X,
- 3:50Musk highlighted the operational efficiency of the Super heavy
- 3:53booster, noting its rapid turn around time.
- 3:55He said as it returns in about 6 minutes and can theoretically be
- 3:59ready for reflight in about an hour, he's showing that the
- 4:03booster has the potential for frequent reuse.
- 4:07They would fly it back to Boca Chica Starbase, Texas, refurbish
- 4:11the booster, do any sort of upgrades, make sure it works,
- 4:14and then either fly it the same day or fly it within the next
- 4:18few days or the week. So we're going to be seeing
- 4:21boosters being reused, I believe, possibly by the end of
- 4:262024. Now Musk's vision for Space XS
- 4:29production capabilities extends beyond the current targets.
- 4:33He envisions raising the production of starships to 300
- 4:37per year, far exceeding the initial goal of 100 Now.
- 4:40This increase is vital to accommodate the longer orbital
- 4:43and reuse cycles of the Starship compared to the booster.
- 4:47If they do end up catching the booster first, the Starship
- 4:51possibly will always land in the Pacific Ocean for a while, and
- 4:56if they can catch the Starship booster, they can reuse those
- 5:00things. So 300 starships per year seems
- 5:02about right, and starship's longer orbit and ground track
- 5:07alignment requirements mean it's reuse frequency might be limited
- 5:11to just once a day. Now the ship needs to complete
- 5:14at least one orbit, but often several to have the ground track
- 5:17line back up with the launch site, so reuse may only be
- 5:21daily. He wants starships to launch
- 5:26like airplanes do frequently on the hour, and it seems like
- 5:32they're going to be able to do that if they have 300 star
- 5:34ships. Now these developments really
- 5:37suggest that SpaceX will focus more on increasing the
- 5:40production of starships than the Super heavy boosters.
- 5:43The strategy aligns with a different operational and reuse
- 5:46dynamics of the two components of the Starship, and the
- 5:49significance of these tests cannot be understated as they
- 5:52represent crucial steps in space.
- 5:54XS journey towards more advanced and frequent space missions.
- 5:58The successful static fire tests are important indicators of the
- 6:00starship's readiness for more complex missions, including
- 6:04potential payload deployments. Spacex's plans for the Starship
- 6:08extend beyond lunar missions to the company envisions using the
- 6:11rocket system for interplanetary travel, particularly for
- 6:14missions to Mars. The company's focus on rapid
- 6:17testing and development reflects its commitment to maintaining a
- 6:20leading position in the space industry as well.
- 6:22This is about business, and Spacex's ability to conduct
- 6:25multiple significant tests in a single day shows that they have
- 6:28the expertise in the robustness of technical infrastructure so
- 6:33they can continue building starships faster and faster.
- 6:36But looking ahead, Spacex's next steps will be closely monitored.
- 6:40The upcoming third orbital test flight of the Starship is
- 6:43particularly anticipated as it may include the first attempt to
- 6:47deploy a payload into space, possibly Starlinks, a key
- 6:51capability for future missions, and with each successful test
- 6:55and development, SpaceX moves closer to realizing its vision
- 6:58of interplanetary travel and potentially changing the course
- 7:01of human space exploration. The company continues to set new
- 7:05standards in space technology and exploration, and the success
- 7:08of these static fire tests marks a step forward, a huge step
- 7:13forward for the IFT 3 flight, possibly early next year.
