- 3:04Speaker 6: It was Wednesday, February twelfth. It was cold in Los Angeles.
- 3:07Speaker 6: We were working the day watch out a Bunco detail.
- 3:09Speaker 6: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is Captain Steve.
- 3:11Speaker 4: My name is Friday.
- 3:12Speaker 6: We were at the Armstrong Thomas Department Star Cafeteria and
- 3:15Speaker 6: it was three fourteen pm when I got back to
- 3:17Speaker 6: the table.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Hey, John, let me give you a hand. Thanks you
- 3:21Speaker 4: are miss parents.
- 3:22Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 3:24Speaker 4: I wonder if you tell us what this is all
- 3:25Speaker 4: about now?
- 3:26Speaker 8: Man, surely sorry you had to wait, but I thought
- 3:29Speaker 8: it might be better if we talked up here.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am, would.
- 3:32Speaker 8: You pass the sugar please?
- 3:34Speaker 9: Oh?
- 3:34Speaker 4: Yes, Sam, they are.
- 3:38Speaker 8: Well, it's not a pretty thing. I don't know how
- 3:41Speaker 8: I could have been so foolish, but I guess when
- 3:44Speaker 8: you get to be my age and you haven't gotten anything,
- 3:46Speaker 8: almost any attention makes you forget.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am. How'd you first meet this man? Ben?
- 3:51Speaker 8: I still him first at a musicale. I met him
- 3:54Speaker 8: very briefly that night. He called me the next day
- 3:57Speaker 8: said that he wanted to see me again. Well. I
- 4:00Speaker 8: told him that I didn't think it'd be proper, but
- 4:03Speaker 8: he insisted, so that night we had dinner together. He
- 4:07Speaker 8: seemed so nice I still can't.
- 4:08Speaker 10: Believe it's.
- 4:11Speaker 8: Such a wonderful time. I didn't think anybody could be
- 4:14Speaker 8: so happy. We ate it a wonderful little place down
- 4:17Speaker 8: at the beach, and we went for a long drive
- 4:20Speaker 8: and listened to the music on the radio. Just beautiful
- 4:24Speaker 8: way the ocean looked all moonlight and all.
- 4:27Speaker 4: When did you see him again? Then?
- 4:29Speaker 8: Not until he left. He'd call a couple of times
- 4:32Speaker 8: a day. He got a little embarrassing the girl the story.
- 4:36Speaker 8: He got kidding me about it, but I didn't care.
- 4:40Speaker 8: Then he told me he wanted to marry me. I
- 4:43Speaker 8: couldn't believe it. So wonderful. Well, then one day he
- 4:48Speaker 8: told me that he was going to have to take
- 4:50Speaker 8: a business trip up north.
- 4:52Speaker 4: When was that, you remember, man, I guess it was.
- 4:54Speaker 8: About three weeks ago, something like that. Go ahead, please,
- 5:00Speaker 8: Well he left. I went down to the station and
- 5:02Speaker 8: saw him off. He kissed me and said that when
- 5:06Speaker 8: he got back we'd be married. We were going over
- 5:09Speaker 8: to Las Vegas on our honeymoon. Wonderful plans. Wonderful. Then
- 5:14Speaker 8: I heard from him, and he got to San Francisco.
- 5:17Speaker 8: He called me from the hotel and said that he'd
- 5:19Speaker 8: lost his wallet on the train. He told me he'd
- 5:22Speaker 8: lost everything, all his money, identification, and everything. That's when
- 5:29Speaker 8: he asked me for thee hundred dollars. I didn't think
- 5:32Speaker 8: that anything was wrong, so I sent it to him.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Why did you send it, ma'am?
- 5:36Speaker 8: To his hotel?
- 5:38Speaker 4: Did you hear from me with all after that, ma'am?
- 5:41Speaker 4: Not a word.
- 5:42Speaker 8: At first, I thought that maybe he was just busy.
- 5:45Speaker 8: I did think it was kind of funny that he
- 5:48Speaker 8: wouldn't say something about getting the money I sent, But
- 5:51Speaker 8: not a word. Then I got worried.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Nurse, ma'am, I can't understand.
- 5:56Speaker 8: Finally, I called the hotel and they told me that
- 5:59Speaker 8: he'd checked out. I figured that maybe he was back
- 6:03Speaker 8: in town and wanted to surprise me, so I called
- 6:06Speaker 8: his apartment. The landlady told me that he had left
- 6:10Speaker 8: a couple of weeks before that he didn't leave any
- 6:13Speaker 8: forwarding address.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am.
- 6:17Speaker 8: I didn't know what to think. I didn't want to
- 6:20Speaker 8: believe that he'd just used me, but there didn't seem
- 6:23Speaker 8: to be anything else to think.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am.
- 6:26Speaker 8: Then, of course it was only one hundred dollars. Seemed
- 6:30Speaker 8: that if he'd wanted to rob me, he could have
- 6:33Speaker 8: asked for more. I still don't believe it, even when
- 6:38Speaker 8: I know it's true.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am, I wonder if he could give us a
- 6:40Speaker 4: description of the man.
- 6:41Speaker 8: Yes, I can do that. But see he was tall,
- 6:46Speaker 8: about how tall man over six feet maybe six feet too.
- 6:52Speaker 8: He had blonde hair, kind of wavy.
- 6:55Speaker 4: About how much would say.
- 6:56Speaker 8: Wait, I'd just be guessing that. I'd say about one
- 7:00Speaker 8: hundred and ninety ors.
- 7:01Speaker 4: So I see.
- 7:02Speaker 6: I wonder if you'd be kind enough to come down
- 7:03Speaker 6: to the city hall and look at some pictures for
- 7:05Speaker 6: us you think you might have one of the possible man.
- 7:08Speaker 6: Maybe make you feel a little better to know that
- 7:09Speaker 6: you're not the only woman that this bedman has taken.
- 7:11Speaker 4: There's been quite a few.
- 7:13Speaker 8: I guess I knew that, even if I didn't want
- 7:16Speaker 8: to believe it. I guess I knew it was just
- 7:18Speaker 8: a confidence game, such a cool thing though you as
- 7:25Speaker 8: a person's loneliness.
- 7:26Speaker 9: To rob them.
- 7:27Speaker 8: This man it is, and you've yet along in years,
- 7:31Speaker 8: and you haven't got anything to hold on to. Little
- 7:35Speaker 8: attention in the section makes you forget everything else. Nothing
- 7:39Speaker 8: else seems to matter.
- 7:41Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am, I guess that's the way they figured. Frank
- 7:49Speaker 6: and I had been looking for Jonathan Benton for the
- 7:51Speaker 6: past year. During that time, he'd taken approximately thirty seven
- 7:54Speaker 6: thousand dollars from women in the Los Angeles area. His
- 7:57Speaker 6: method of operation was to answer the ads in the
- 7:59Speaker 6: personal columns of the day papers.
- 8:01Speaker 4: He'd give the woman a whirl wind courtship, then, under the.
- 8:03Speaker 6: Pretext of having to clean up some business before married,
- 8:05Speaker 6: he'd leave time. He'd call the next day and give
- 8:08Speaker 6: them the story about losing his wallet and identification. He'd
- 8:12Speaker 6: asked them for one hundred dollars. This in itself was
- 8:14Speaker 6: to throw off the suspicions.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Of the victim in.
- 8:17Speaker 6: The event that they suspected that they were being taken
- 8:19Speaker 6: in a racket. One hundred dollars was small enough so
- 8:21Speaker 6: that their fear would answer about twenty.
- 8:23Speaker 4: To thirty of these ads at a time, and.
- 8:25Speaker 6: The requests for money would hit all of the suspects
- 8:27Speaker 6: at once. We'd had several complaints lately, and there was
- 8:30Speaker 6: no way of knowing how many women were being taken
- 8:32Speaker 6: and were too embarrassed to report it to the authority.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Four point thirty.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Pm, we drove Miss Terrence back to the city Hall
- 8:39Speaker 6: and had her check the mud books. She was unable
- 8:41Speaker 6: to give us an identification. However, another month passed. During
- 8:44Speaker 6: that time we received fourteen more complaints. In all instances,
- 8:48Speaker 6: the description of the suspect matched that of Jonathan Benton.
- 8:51Speaker 6: All available sources of information were checked, bulletins had been
- 8:54Speaker 6: gotten out carrying his description in the name he used.
- 8:57Speaker 4: No results.
- 8:58Speaker 6: On Wednesday, March twenty fifth, we got to call it
- 9:00Speaker 6: a man answering Benton's description, and placed an ad in.
- 9:02Speaker 4: The personal columns of one of the daily papers.
- 9:04Speaker 6: He'd used the name of Thomas Coolean's. The clerk at
- 9:07Speaker 6: the ad counter gave us his address, and at five
- 9:09Speaker 6: thirty two pm, Frank and I went out to talk
- 9:11Speaker 6: to him.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Yeah you Thomas Coleyan, Yeah, that's right.
- 9:14Speaker 10: What can I do for his police officers like to
- 9:16Speaker 10: talk to you? Sure, come on in.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Know he's glad to talk to the laws. My partner,
- 9:19Speaker 4: Frank Smith, how do you do, mister Smith?
- 9:21Speaker 10: If you boys will come on in, I'll shut the door.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Thank you. And now what's this all about? Ill said?
- 9:28Speaker 4: Did you put this ad in the paper and let
- 9:30Speaker 4: me see.
- 9:33Speaker 10: Texas cowman desires to meet teit young lady object companionship
- 9:39Speaker 10: held everything right dead, Yes, sir, that's mine.
- 9:42Speaker 4: I wrote it all myself. Holong a bit of Los Angeles.
- 9:45Speaker 10: Well, now let's see, got in on the bus last Tuesday.
- 9:49Speaker 10: That make a week in the day.
- 9:51Speaker 4: What brings you out here?
- 9:52Speaker 10: Well, I guess you could say it's kind of a
- 9:54Speaker 10: business trip. A little tired of the same face as
- 9:57Speaker 10: back home, so I thought i'd just see what the
- 9:59Speaker 10: rest of the country looked like. Well, little ladies of it,
- 10:02Speaker 10: I'm from Texas, you know, ambrilla. And what's all this
- 10:06Speaker 10: about anyway?
- 10:06Speaker 4: Some law broke No, it's about that ad. Oh you
- 10:10Speaker 4: found out huh thang, pardon.
- 10:12Speaker 10: Oh you found out about me saying I was a cattleman.
- 10:14Speaker 10: That's it, ain't it?
- 10:15Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 10:16Speaker 10: Well, now, I.
- 10:17Speaker 9: Didn't mean the harm.
- 10:19Speaker 10: I do have a couple of milk cows on the place.
- 10:22Speaker 10: Hold stein in a Guernsey the real nice too, Just
- 10:26Speaker 10: that I was said, darn lawns, and I kind of
- 10:28Speaker 10: thought this might be a way to meet some nice gal.
- 10:31Speaker 10: I didn't mean the harm. You can see that, can't you.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Yeah, sir, I guess so, well, if you'd mind taking
- 10:35Speaker 4: a ride with.
- 10:36Speaker 10: Us, and well I should say, not always happy to
- 10:38Speaker 10: go along with the law.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Well you figured to go to I'd like you to
- 10:41Speaker 4: meet somebody.
- 10:42Speaker 10: Well, now that's right, nice, I got some gal you'd
- 10:45Speaker 10: like me to meet him?
- 10:46Speaker 4: Well, I thought, exactly, that's it.
- 10:48Speaker 10: Well, it don't matter none. I got nothing to do anyhow,
- 10:51Speaker 10: just sitting here wondering if I get into replies for
- 10:53Speaker 10: the ad.
- 10:54Speaker 4: All right, sir, you wouldn't mind. Let's go, not at all.
- 10:56Speaker 4: I'll get my hat.
- 11:02Speaker 10: Don't hard to feel conspicuous, and it's had it all?
- 11:05Speaker 4: Was that right? Yep?
- 11:06Speaker 10: Kind of thought people might make something of it, but hardly.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Even notice it.
- 11:10Speaker 10: Had two little kids come up today ask from autograph
- 11:13Speaker 10: just that figured out.
- 11:14Speaker 4: As the movie star.
- 11:16Speaker 10: Made him feel real good too. Then I wrote my
- 11:18Speaker 10: name for him. They didn't know who it was.
- 11:21Speaker 9: That didn't make no mind to him.
- 11:22Speaker 10: They just thanked me, went on about the business that
- 11:25Speaker 10: nice little folks.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Who was you know? Well, let's go, sure, real.
- 11:30Speaker 10: Nice people here in La real nice. Haven't met a
- 11:33Speaker 10: Baton yet.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Well you haven't been here long.
- 11:35Speaker 6: We got him five point forty pm.
- 11:41Speaker 4: We drove Thomas Cornan downtown and.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Had a cargo out and pick up Miss Towns while
- 11:45Speaker 6: we talked to Conan from the interrogation room, she walked
- 11:47Speaker 6: by the open door and looked in at the suspect.
- 11:50Speaker 4: She told us that he was not the man who's
- 11:51Speaker 4: victimized it.
- 11:52Speaker 6: She was returned to her home, and after Cornan had
- 11:54Speaker 6: been checked THROUGHY and I, he was released. Next morning,
- 11:57Speaker 6: Frank and I ran down a tip from an informant,
- 11:59Speaker 6: but it let us know where ten eighteen am. We
- 12:01Speaker 6: checked back into the office. You get the latest bulletin
- 12:04Speaker 6: from San Francisco, Jo, Yeah, I looked it over this morning.
- 12:06Speaker 6: He checked out the hotel Benmon was staying at.
- 12:08Speaker 4: He checked out of there.
- 12:09Speaker 6: They haven't seen him since well, I mean it's probably
- 12:11Speaker 6: back here in town, well for years.
- 12:13Speaker 4: We should start hearing about him again. But he said,
- 12:15Speaker 4: I'll get a funk o Friday. Whop.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Oh yes, ma'am. Yes that's Terrence. I remember. Yes, Now
- 12:23Speaker 6: where was that? Would you give me that again?

- 12:38Speaker 4: apartment out.
- 12:39Speaker 6: On Vine Street. Ten forty one am. Frank and I
- 12:46Speaker 6: got to the apartment house on Vine Street. We talked
- 12:48Speaker 6: to the landlord and he told us that a man
- 12:50Speaker 6: answering the suspects description was registered in apartment four B.
- 12:54Speaker 6: He was registered under the name Jonathan Benson. He told
- 12:57Speaker 6: us that this Benson had just moved in and paid
- 12:58Speaker 6: his first month's.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Rent in the him.
- 13:00Speaker 6: He said that he was just going to be in
- 13:02Speaker 6: town for a short time, and then in the event
- 13:03Speaker 6: that he moved out before his month was up, he
- 13:05Speaker 6: expected no refund. Frank and I went up to the
- 13:08Speaker 6: fourth floor and knocked on the door. Yeah you're Jonathan Benson.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Who are you? Police officers want to talk to you.
- 13:14Speaker 4: What about why? It'd be better if we talked inside.
- 13:17Speaker 9: Maybe I don't want it all right?
- 13:18Speaker 4: How mutter? You get your hat? We want to talk
- 13:19Speaker 4: to you downtown. What for long? Gets your hat?
- 13:22Speaker 9: Just a minute? I think maybe there's been some kind
- 13:24Speaker 9: of mistake here. Just tell me exactly what it is
- 13:25Speaker 9: you're looking for. I'm sure we can work.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Come on, mister quit stalin, get your hat with you.
- 13:29Speaker 9: Come on in, I'll get my hat.
- 13:33Speaker 4: I'll get it for you. And there's father. Yeah, they're gravely.
- 13:36Speaker 9: Are you sure you got the right man.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Looks that way. No way to work this out? What
- 13:40Speaker 4: do you mean by that?
- 13:42Speaker 9: I don't even know why you want me to go
- 13:43Speaker 9: with you. It seems you could fill me in on that.
- 13:45Speaker 4: It's got some people we'd like to have you meet.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Oh you'll see when we get there. Here's your hat.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Come on, let's go, guy.
- 13:51Speaker 9: Sure, thank you have the good stop though, coming in
- 13:52Speaker 9: here dragging a private citizen out of his house.
- 13:54Speaker 4: You haven't known anything wrung, You got nothing worry about that.
- 13:56Speaker 9: That's not the point. I don't like it. Coming in
- 13:58Speaker 9: here and take me downtown so a lot of stupid
- 14:00Speaker 9: old broads can look at me.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Who said we wanted women to look at you? Yeah?
- 14:03Speaker 4: Did no? We said we want you to meet some people.
- 14:06Speaker 9: Listen, misunderstood?
- 14:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess you didn't.
- 14:09Speaker 9: No way we can work this out.
- 14:10Speaker 4: There's no way.
- 14:11Speaker 9: And then come on, oh just a minute. I want
- 14:13Speaker 9: to be sure I got my key. I don't want
- 14:14Speaker 9: to be locked out.
- 14:15Speaker 6: Don't worry about it. What do you mean you might
- 14:16Speaker 6: not be coming back? Frank and I took Jonathan Benson downtown.
- 14:23Speaker 6: We ran him through R and I, but we got
- 14:25Speaker 6: no identification. His fingerprints were rolled and checked, but they
- 14:27Speaker 6: didn't make it. MS Terrence was called and asked to
- 14:30Speaker 6: come down to the city Hall to try to identify
- 14:32Speaker 6: the suspect.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Two point thirty pm. We took him to the interrogation room.
- 14:35Speaker 4: You ever use the name Benton?
- 14:36Speaker 7: No?
- 14:37Speaker 4: You sure? Yeah? Have you ever used the other alias?
- 14:39Speaker 9: Why shout it?
- 14:39Speaker 4: You tell us? Now?
- 14:40Speaker 9: Look, why don't you come off there? Tell me what
- 14:42Speaker 9: this is all about.
- 14:43Speaker 4: You told us he just got into town. Is that right? Yeah?
- 14:45Speaker 9: I've been here about a week.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Where'd you come from?
- 14:47Speaker 9: Up Nor?
- 14:47Speaker 4: Where?
- 14:47Speaker 10: Up Nor?
- 14:48Speaker 4: San Francisco? To live up there?
- 14:49Speaker 9: Do you most of the time? Yeah?
- 14:51Speaker 4: Most of the time? What does that mean?
- 14:52Speaker 9: Just that most of the time I live in San Francisco.
- 14:55Speaker 9: That hard for you guys to understand.
- 14:56Speaker 4: I'm want to work you in the salesman? Then what
- 14:58Speaker 4: do you sell? Whatever?
- 15:00Speaker 9: People want to buy?
- 15:00Speaker 4: What do you sell them now?
- 15:02Speaker 9: Nothing?
- 15:02Speaker 4: Right now?
- 15:02Speaker 9: That's why I'm here.
- 15:03Speaker 4: I'm looking for a deal. You know a woman named
- 15:05Speaker 4: Terrence Grace? Terrence?
- 15:06Speaker 9: I don't think so.
- 15:08Speaker 4: My why we'd like to know?
- 15:10Speaker 9: Hey, maybe I'm wrong about all of this, but it
- 15:12Speaker 9: seems to me that I had to be booked, that
- 15:13Speaker 9: you had to let me go. They changed that law.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Now that law is still good, and let's.
- 15:16Speaker 9: Stop hoisting around. I've got a lot of things I
- 15:18Speaker 9: want to do. Fill me in on this, and then
- 15:20Speaker 9: let me out of here.
- 15:20Speaker 4: All right.
- 15:21Speaker 6: It's been a confidence man working in the LA area,
- 15:23Speaker 6: been taking money from women. Gives him a big pitch
- 15:25Speaker 6: about wanting to marry him. Then he hits him up
- 15:26Speaker 6: one hundred bucks and leaves him.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Sounds like a good wreck. He's taking a lot of
- 15:29Speaker 4: money from people who haven't got it to spare. And
- 15:31Speaker 4: I say, I said, tough one off. We'd say you're road.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Where you look at it?
- 15:35Speaker 9: Where do I fit into this little fantasy?
- 15:37Speaker 4: You look good for the guy who's been pulling the
- 15:38Speaker 4: deal me. That's right.
- 15:41Speaker 9: You guys have flipping description matches, so I look like
- 15:44Speaker 9: another guy.
- 15:44Speaker 6: Everything else about your checks out, so you figure you've
- 15:47Speaker 6: made for the jobs.
- 15:48Speaker 9: That's what we figure. Which way is a gas chamber?
- 15:51Speaker 9: Come off it, fellas. You guys know you're trying to
- 15:54Speaker 9: hang a bad rap on me. You know it, and
- 15:55Speaker 9: so do I. Now let's call a whole thing off.
- 15:57Speaker 9: I can get out of here and you can get
- 15:58Speaker 9: to the peanut.
- 16:00Speaker 4: I'll get it.
- 16:03Speaker 8: Heads.
- 16:04Speaker 11: They kill me if you can, kid, I know, Jonathan,
- 16:14Speaker 11: what why'd you do it? Jonas?
- 16:18Speaker 8: Why if you wanted the money, you could have asked
- 16:21Speaker 8: for it. I'd have given it to you. Didn't have
- 16:24Speaker 8: to lie about what you saw.
- 16:26Speaker 9: Place is full of amilone's.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Is this the man? Miss Terrence?
- 16:29Speaker 11: Yes?
- 16:31Speaker 4: All right, how about it? Benson?
- 16:32Speaker 9: I don't know what she's talking about?
- 16:33Speaker 4: What just bit?
- 16:34Speaker 10: Where?
- 16:34Speaker 9: That's him? Liney's jumping all right down?
- 16:36Speaker 6: Benson might have had enough of that, and now come
- 16:38Speaker 6: off with You've just been identified. We've got a lot
- 16:39Speaker 6: more of them that we can have here. I think
- 16:41Speaker 6: they'll identify you too.
- 16:43Speaker 9: Why I'll get her out of here. One thing I
- 16:46Speaker 9: can't stand as a woman balling. Something comes along. I
- 16:49Speaker 9: can't figure out right away they got a ball? Anything
- 16:51Speaker 9: comes along. They got to cry and sick of it?
- 16:55Speaker 4: All right, man, maybe it'd be better if you waited
- 16:56Speaker 4: in our office.
- 16:58Speaker 11: Yes, sir, you know why he did it.
- 17:01Speaker 8: Why he took this way.
- 17:02Speaker 11: To get some money.
- 17:03Speaker 9: I took this way because it was the easy way.
- 17:05Speaker 9: Your broad's are all alike, every last one of you.
- 17:07Speaker 9: Let me get a few things straight.
- 17:09Speaker 4: First.
- 17:09Speaker 9: You say I took a hundred dollars from you?
- 17:11Speaker 4: Is that right?
- 17:11Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 17:12Speaker 4: All right?
- 17:13Speaker 9: I want you to think about this and think real careful.
- 17:15Speaker 9: Didn't I say that I wanted to borrow the money?
- 17:17Speaker 9: Isn't that what I said?
- 17:18Speaker 4: Borrow?
- 17:19Speaker 11: Yes, that's what you say.
- 17:20Speaker 9: Did I say that i'd pay the money back in
- 17:21Speaker 9: any certain time?
- 17:22Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 17:23Speaker 9: Well, you think real good, you'll remember that I didn't.
- 17:25Speaker 9: I just said that i'd pay you back. That's all
- 17:27Speaker 9: I didn't say.
- 17:27Speaker 8: When I don't, I don't care.
- 17:30Speaker 4: There you are and.
- 17:31Speaker 9: Any trying to borrow money from a friend. I borrow
- 17:34Speaker 9: the money from her. I'll pay it back.
- 17:35Speaker 11: You said you wanted to marry me. You said you loved.
- 17:38Speaker 9: Oh, come off it, Sarah. You got no beat, you
- 17:40Speaker 9: got the soft light in the romantic music, you got
- 17:42Speaker 9: it all. Look at you. Take a good luck. Who'd
- 17:46Speaker 9: want to marry you?
- 17:47Speaker 4: Heard?
- 17:48Speaker 9: Just a minute? Here, here's a hundred bucks I borrowed.
- 17:52Speaker 9: I want to pay you back. I got one hundred
- 17:54Speaker 9: dollars worth of last from you. That much easy, here's
- 17:56Speaker 9: your dough. I go home and have a good cry.
- 17:58Speaker 9: I wouldn't marry you if you were the last woman
- 18:00Speaker 9: on her. That's enough of that Benson, you're not just kidding.
- 18:02Speaker 9: It's old harpy with romantic ideas.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Put a laugh.
- 18:05Speaker 9: She thinks anybody want to marry her, and she's a
- 18:07Speaker 9: looney too.
- 18:08Speaker 8: I didn't think anybody could be this meme. I didn't
- 18:12Speaker 8: think anyone could be this crewe.
- 18:15Speaker 9: I don't believe you got no choice. You know it
- 18:18Speaker 9: all along? Thanks for the laughs.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Come on, miss tered, you.
- 18:26Speaker 9: Imagine that that old bag really thinking that marry.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Yeah, real laugh.
- 18:31Speaker 9: Well, anyway, she got a go back. I said i'd
- 18:33Speaker 9: pay her back. I did you check with the rest
- 18:35Speaker 9: of them. I'll tell you the same thing. I borrowed
- 18:37Speaker 9: the money. It's all. I can't help it. If I
- 18:39Speaker 9: thought something out, I can't help it. Count Come on,
- 18:42Speaker 9: let's get this over with. I want to get out
- 18:43Speaker 9: of here.
- 18:44Speaker 4: You know you look upset.
- 18:46Speaker 9: Kuh oh. It won't prove anything.
- 18:48Speaker 4: It's a way they got something for you.
- 18:49Speaker 9: Benson is right.
- 18:50Speaker 6: Yeah, someplace sometimes you're gonna make a mistake, that's right. Yeah,
- 18:53Speaker 6: And when you do, we're gonna lean on you, and
- 18:54Speaker 6: we're gonna lean hard.

- 20:02Speaker 6: We had twelve of the victims of the confidence Man
- 20:04Speaker 6: look at Benson. All of them gave a positive identification,
- 20:07Speaker 6: but verified his story that he borrowed the money from them.
- 20:10Speaker 6: Four to twenty five PM, Frank and I got in
- 20:12Speaker 6: touch with the District Attorney's office and talked with them.
- 20:14Speaker 6: What Benson had said was true. In borrowing the money
- 20:17Speaker 6: or in saying he was borrowing it, he'd committed no violation.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Of the law. We had to release him from custody.
- 20:23Speaker 4: A month passed.
- 20:24Speaker 6: During that time, we'd heard nothing more from the suspect.
- 20:26Speaker 6: He'd stopped working the dodge in the Los Angeles area.
- 20:29Speaker 6: We contacted the San Francisco authorities and informed them of
- 20:32Speaker 6: what had happened, and they said that they'd be on
- 20:33Speaker 6: the lookout for Benson. During the next two weeks, Frank
- 20:36Speaker 6: and I worked on a ring of bunko waters that
- 20:38Speaker 6: were working in the obituary columns.
- 20:40Speaker 4: On June sixteenth, we.
- 20:41Speaker 6: Got a call from Burgery Division that they'd gotten a
- 20:43Speaker 6: report of a theft and talking to the victim, they'd
- 20:45Speaker 6: gotten the name Jack Bentley. They checked the files on
- 20:48Speaker 6: him and found that it could be Jonathan Benson. The
- 20:50Speaker 6: victim of Miss Betty Lindsay came to our office to
- 20:52Speaker 6: talk to us.
- 20:53Speaker 7: I don't know why they thought that I should see you.
- 20:55Speaker 8: It's just a plain theft.
- 20:56Speaker 6: The officers in Burgery said that they thought we might
- 20:58Speaker 6: be interested in the thief. Miss Lindsay tell us about him.
- 21:01Speaker 10: Lousy crumb.
- 21:02Speaker 7: This guy's a real schnook, schnuck of the first water.
- 21:05Speaker 4: That's man. What's his name for?
- 21:06Speaker 8: He called himself Bentley?
- 21:07Speaker 7: Jack Bentley?
- 21:08Speaker 4: Bumm? What do you look like? Miss Lindsey?
- 21:11Speaker 7: Tall blonde, had a nice looking guy who went for
- 21:13Speaker 7: the tide.
- 21:14Speaker 8: I did. Now I got troubles.
- 21:16Speaker 10: Oh, I'm no good.
- 21:18Speaker 6: Bum What if you take a look at some of
- 21:19Speaker 6: the pictures we've got here, see if he's in these.
- 21:21Speaker 11: Sure, I'd like to see you again him.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Where the picture, Frank, did you get him? Please? Yeah?
- 21:27Speaker 4: Where'd you meet this ben Lea? Do you remember?
- 21:29Speaker 7: Well, I'm sort of the hostess of the place downtown
- 21:31Speaker 7: was about fifth Anyway, about two or three weeks ago
- 21:35Speaker 7: that Schnuck comes in, orders a couple of drinks and leave.
- 21:38Speaker 7: Next night he's back again. Oh, he was a cagey one.
- 21:41Speaker 7: Didn't work too fast, like about a week to make
- 21:44Speaker 7: the pitch. Then he asked me out to dinner.
- 21:46Speaker 8: Well, always seemed kind nice, so I told him I'd go.
- 21:49Speaker 4: Here are the pictures, ma'am. If you just take a
- 21:52Speaker 4: look through him and see if there's one of Bentley
- 21:53Speaker 4: in there?
- 21:54Speaker 8: Yeah, I see, No, m kid.
- 22:00Speaker 11: What he wanted for?
- 22:01Speaker 10: Oh?
- 22:01Speaker 4: He works the casualty racket.
- 22:03Speaker 8: What's this?
- 22:04Speaker 6: Gets the names of people that the diet tells their
- 22:06Speaker 6: families if they ordered some stuff, what kind of stuff, old.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Pen and pencil sets, watches, cheap things, charges a lot
- 22:11Speaker 4: of money for him.
- 22:12Speaker 6: Most of the people figure that it's one of the
- 22:13Speaker 6: last things I loved ones wanted, so they pay the prices.
- 22:16Speaker 4: The stuff's worthless. Well, I'll be a racket.
- 22:19Speaker 7: It's a nice looking guy too, so honest.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Man, that's why it works.
- 22:23Speaker 8: Yeah, I suppose so.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Well, let me see.
- 22:26Speaker 8: No, this was not hemn't say.
- 22:28Speaker 10: Wait a minute, yeah that's him.
- 22:31Speaker 8: Ooh, what are mudnicks?
- 22:32Speaker 4: Ma'am?
- 22:33Speaker 8: A mudnick, a real bum. But that's him.
- 22:35Speaker 10: I'm sure of its.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you mean you know this guy, yes, ma'am. What
- 22:39Speaker 4: if he tells exactly what happened?
- 22:41Speaker 7: Sure like I was telling you this guy Benson, Yes, ma'am,
- 22:44Speaker 7: that's right, Jonathan Benson.
- 22:46Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 22:46Speaker 7: Well, anyway, he asked me out to dinner. I told
- 22:49Speaker 7: him i'd go. It looked like it was pretty well fixed.
- 22:52Speaker 7: I think it wouldn't do no harm. Oh see, I
- 22:54Speaker 7: don't get out till twelve thirty, and there ain't many
- 22:56Speaker 7: places nice places open at the back. But I said, yeah,
- 23:00Speaker 7: told me picked me up. He got the club about
- 23:02Speaker 7: ten o'clock, said that he'd gotten through with whatever it
- 23:05Speaker 7: was he was doing that. He came back to see
- 23:06Speaker 7: if he could use my apartment to freshen up a bit.
- 23:09Speaker 7: Freshen up a bit, boy, I went away to heist
- 23:12Speaker 7: the place.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Oh what go ahead, and then well, I gave.
- 23:17Speaker 8: Him the key of the place.
- 23:18Speaker 7: He said that he'd stop at a drug store and
- 23:19Speaker 7: pick up a razor and shave and wash his face,
- 23:21Speaker 7: and he'd be back to pick me up. The lafe
- 23:23Speaker 7: iver saw them walked off with a fur coat. I
- 23:27Speaker 7: had say for three years for that coat cost me
- 23:29Speaker 7: nine hundred bucks.
- 23:30Speaker 8: And he took a ring.
- 23:31Speaker 7: Word about one hundred and fifty diamonds belong to my mother.
- 23:35Speaker 8: Sure could get him, nail him good?
- 23:37Speaker 4: Yes, oh, Nick.
- 23:44Speaker 6: We continued to question Betty Lindsey. She gave us the
- 23:47Speaker 6: name of one of Benson's friends. We checked on him
- 23:49Speaker 6: and he gave us the name of a girl who
- 23:50Speaker 6: knew the suspect. We talked to her and she was
- 23:52Speaker 6: able to give us Benson's address. It was a rooming
- 23:54Speaker 6: house on Franklin Avenue in the Hollywood area. Six forty
- 23:57Speaker 6: seven pm. Frank and I went up to his room.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Yeah, come on in.
- 24:03Speaker 9: Should have kept my mouth shut. What do you guys want?
- 24:05Speaker 4: We want to talk you downtown Benson.
- 24:07Speaker 9: We are not going to get on that merry go
- 24:08Speaker 9: round again. We are getting tired of this whole deal.
- 24:10Speaker 9: What are you guys trying to tire me this time.
- 24:12Speaker 6: We didn't have to do it, Benson. You took care
- 24:14Speaker 6: of that yourself. Right, You made a mistake.
- 24:17Speaker 4: What is it this time?
- 24:17Speaker 9: You figure I took some candy away from a blind night?
- 24:20Speaker 4: Kill on Benson, let's go.
- 24:21Speaker 9: You're gonna arrest me this time? Or am I going
- 24:23Speaker 9: as a favorite this time?
- 24:24Speaker 4: It's on us?
- 24:25Speaker 9: You mean we're playing for keeps now?
- 24:26Speaker 4: Yeah? What's the charge? Grand fest? Your kid? No? I
- 24:31Speaker 4: really believe you're serious. That's right, you call it.
- 24:33Speaker 9: This is going to be interesting. If you can't prove it,
- 24:36Speaker 9: I'm going to own city Hall and the first thing
- 24:38Speaker 9: I'm going to do is fire you too. You know that,
- 24:40Speaker 9: don't you. Well we'll take that chance, all right, But
- 24:42Speaker 9: don't say I didn't warn you. You know, someday I'm
- 24:44Speaker 9: going to write a book, call it some of my
- 24:46Speaker 9: best friends at cop Yeah, you do that, I will.
- 24:48Speaker 6: You'll have the time. We took the suspect downtown. We
- 24:55Speaker 6: talked over over an hour, but he did admitt nothing.
- 24:58Speaker 6: Without being able to produce the stolen articles, case should
- 25:00Speaker 6: be difficult to prosecute. We had Benson take everything out
- 25:03Speaker 6: of his pockets. Among these personal effects, we found a
- 25:05Speaker 6: key to a locker in the subway terminal. Two men
- 25:07Speaker 6: from Bunco Division took the key and went down to
- 25:09Speaker 6: the terminal. They recovered a locked suitcase and brought it
- 25:12Speaker 6: back to the squad room where we were questioning Benson.
- 25:14Speaker 4: How about it, Benson, that's yours.
- 25:16Speaker 9: I never saw it before in my life.
- 25:17Speaker 4: It's locked. You got a key to dispenser.
- 25:19Speaker 9: I told you it wasn't mine. What more can I say?
- 25:21Speaker 4: I see those keys there, I don't think yeah here.
- 25:26Speaker 9: I don't know what this is all going to prove.
- 25:27Speaker 9: I told you the suitcase isn't mine.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Yeah, that figures. That's how come the keys fit? Huh?
- 25:32Speaker 4: Cheap suitcase? A lot of the keys double, is that right?
- 25:34Speaker 9: Sure are lots of times I lost the key for
- 25:36Speaker 9: one suitcase, used the key from another one.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Dolment they ever find one of these in the case.
- 25:40Speaker 9: I never saw that for a coat in my life.
- 25:43Speaker 9: I haven't got the slightest idea how it got there.
- 25:44Speaker 9: I want to talk to a lawyer.
- 25:46Speaker 4: You getting kind of jumping at you, Benson.
- 25:47Speaker 9: Sure, I don't mind him many. I told you I
- 25:49Speaker 9: got no idea where that code came from. But I
- 25:51Speaker 9: know you guys aren't going to believe it. You're about
- 25:53Speaker 9: to get me, you said, so, you're going to.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Try everything you can do with it. You want to
- 25:56Speaker 4: tell us about it?
- 25:57Speaker 9: Now, nothing to tell I don't know nothing about it.
- 26:00Speaker 4: You don't ever give up to you.
- 26:01Speaker 9: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 26:02Speaker 6: I want to see a lawyer. All right, we'll fix it.
- 26:04Speaker 6: So you can put that call in. We got the
- 26:06Speaker 6: owner of this coat on the way down here. She's
- 26:08Speaker 6: going to identify him and that's all we need. Now
- 26:09Speaker 6: you just sit there and keep your mouth shut with you.
- 26:13Speaker 4: Okay, Bucko Smith? What's that?
- 26:18Speaker 10: Oh?
- 26:18Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, sure, I remember you did. Huh h, Well
- 26:26Speaker 4: that's wow. Glad to hear it. I wouldn't know. I'm
- 26:30Speaker 4: not much of an authority. I guess.
- 26:34Speaker 6: Her name's what, Yeah, it's a nice name. Well, I'll
- 26:40Speaker 6: be glad to tell him. I'm sure he'll be pleased.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Thanks very much for calling. When are you leaving? I see? Okay?
- 26:49Speaker 6: Thanks a lot by anything. Yes, that kid from Texas?
- 26:53Speaker 6: You know that's Thomas Conant. Oh yeah, I mean the
- 26:56Speaker 6: cattle man.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Yeah, got an answer to his ad? Is that right? Yeah?
- 27:00Speaker 4: Somebody call him up and he said that he made.
- 27:01Speaker 6: A real good deal for himself, and he's shipping her
- 27:03Speaker 6: back to Texas.
- 27:04Speaker 10: Well.
- 27:04Speaker 3: You mean he found a girl, no, bought himself another Holstein.
- 27:14Speaker 3: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 27:17Speaker 3: were changed to protect the innocence.
- 27:19Speaker 5: On October seventeenth, trial was held in Department eighty seven,
