- 0:02Spiritual seekers harness the powers of body, vital being,
- 0:06emotions and mind in order to develop and eventually attain
- 0:11the goal of their seeking. The power of dedicated work, the
- 0:16power of the breath, the power of devotion, the power of
- 0:21concentration, all have a part to play in the seeker's journey
- 0:26towards spiritual fulfilment. This is considered to be
- 0:30acceptable. At a certain point, however,
- 0:34yogic practice tends to lead to the development and expression
- 0:37of new powers, powers that are uncommon when we look at the
- 0:42state of human development today.
- 0:45And at this point, the seeker is generally faced with a Riddle.
- 0:49What should they do about these new forms of power that are
- 0:53arising as a result of their practice?
- 0:57For those who follow a path of renunciation, the advice has
- 1:01always been clear and direct that the seeker should not take
- 1:05up, develop or become involved with the application of these
- 1:10powers, which become distractions to the seeking
- 1:14rather than aids. On the other hand, those who
- 1:18follow a path of integration into the life of humanity and
- 1:22who work toward carrying out the divine intention in the
- 1:25manifestation may recognize that these are evolutionary
- 1:30developments that represent, in all likelihood, powers that are
- 1:34both natural and consistent with the evolutionary process and
- 1:40thus should be accepted and utilized in a balanced and
- 1:44harmonious manner in furtherance of their spiritual ideal.
- 1:49The issue in both cases comes down to the intention behind the
- 1:53acceptance and use of the powers.
- 1:56If they are used to aggrandize the ego, to gain domination, to
- 2:01enhance vanity, to acquire wealth for individual enjoyment,
- 2:07they are clearly a distraction for seekers in either direction.
- 2:12If, on the other hand, they are put to work for the general
- 2:15development and support the arc of consciousness as it
- 2:19successively works to manifest higher states of consciousness
- 2:24in the world without the individual ego attaching itself
- 2:28to this expression, then it represents a power that can and
- 2:33should be utilized in the divine work.
- 2:38We see many attempts to work through this issue in the
- 2:41history of yogic process. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras describe
- 2:46various sorts of powers, how and in what manner they develop, and
- 2:51how to manage them. Tibetan Yoga has extensive
- 2:55teachings on the methodology of developing certain powers.
- 2:59Tantric Yoga in its various forms seeks to harness and
- 3:04utilize the powers to not only fulfill the force of the life,
- 3:08but as a means towards the spiritual realization sought in
- 3:12those paths. The Bhagwad Gita shows an
- 3:16integrated approach that appears to accept the powers that come
- 3:20to the individual as long as they are put at the service of
- 3:24the greater truth and destiny that the individual is intended
- 3:28to fulfill. The issue raised by the Gita is
- 3:32to find the right approach based on undertaking any action with
- 3:36respect to the right circumstance, the right
- 3:40intention, the right balance and a view to the right result to be
- 3:45attained. Temasek approaches based on
- 3:51darkness and false application are discouraged.
- 3:55Similarly, Rajasic approaches based on desire and
- 3:59self-interest are also discouraged.
- 4:03The approach taken by Sri Aurobindo works to realize the
- 4:06evolutionary potential and thereby carry out what he terms
- 4:11the Yoga of Self perfection. Sri Aurobindo observes quote in
- 4:18Mystic experience. When there is an opening of the
- 4:21inner centers, or in other ways, spontaneously or by will or
- 4:26endeavour, or in the very course of the spiritual growth, new
- 4:32powers of consciousness have been known to develop.
- 4:35They present themselves as if an automatic consequence of some
- 4:40inner opening or in answer to a call in the being, so much so
- 4:45that it has been found necessary to recommend to the seeker not
- 4:49to hunt after these powers, not to accept or use them.
- 4:54This rejection is logical for those who seek to withdraw from
- 4:58life, for all acceptance of greater power would bind to life
- 5:04or be a burden on the bare and pure urge towards liberation and
- 5:09indifference to all other aims and issues is natural for the
- 5:12God lover who seeks God for his own sake and not for power or
- 5:18any other inferior attraction. The pursuit of these alluring
- 5:22but often dangerous forces would be a deviation from his purpose.
- 5:27A similar rejection is a necessary self restraint and a
- 5:32spiritual discipline for the immature seeker, since such
- 5:36powers may be a great, even a deadly peril, for their
- 5:41supernormality may easily feed in him an abnormal exaggeration
- 5:46of the ego. Power in itself may be dreaded
- 5:49as a temptation by the aspirant to perfection.
- 5:53Because power can abase as well as elevate, nothing is more
- 5:58liable to misuse. But when new capacities come as
- 6:03an inevitable result of the growth into a greater
- 6:06consciousness and a greater life, and that growth is part of
- 6:11the very aim of the spiritual being within us, this bar does
- 6:15not operate. For a growth of the being into
- 6:19supernature, and its life in supernature cannot take place or
- 6:24cannot be complete without bringing with it a greater power
- 6:28of consciousness and a greater power of life, and the
- 6:32spontaneous development of an instrumentation of knowledge and
- 6:36force normal to that supernature.
- 6:40There is nothing in this future evolution of the being which
- 6:44could be regarded as irrational or incredible.
- 6:48There is nothing in it abnormal or miraculous.
- 6:52It would be the necessary course of the evolution of
- 6:56consciousness and its forces in the passage from the mental to
- 7:01the Gnostic or super mental formulation of our existence.
- 7:06This action of the forces of Super Nature would be a natural,
- 7:10normal and spontaneously simple working of the new, higher or
- 7:15greater consciousness into which the being enters in the course
- 7:19of his self evolution. The Gnostic being, accepting the
- 7:24Gnostic life, would develop and use the powers of this greater
- 7:29consciousness even as man develops and uses the powers of
- 7:35his mental nature. And quote reference Srioro Bindu
