- 0:00Speaker 1: With Dick Powell as private detective Richard Diamond, this NBC
- 0:04Speaker 1: broadcast places him under the close attention of the police.
- 0:09Speaker 1: On March 19, 1950, Richard Diamond, private detective, presented its
- 0:15Speaker 1: 46th episode, Private Eye Test, at the 5th Precinct under
- 0:19Speaker 1: Lieutenant Walter Levinson. Diamond has been summoned for a State
- 0:24Speaker 1: Police Commission requalification examination that may affect his license, joining
- 0:30Speaker 1: other private eyes, including Pat Romero. After the written test,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Levinson assigns Diamond to a homicide exercise in the precinct basement,
- 0:41Speaker 1: but the situation soon requires Diamond's services in earnest.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Now, back to the golden age of radio. © BF-WATCH TV.
- 0:52Speaker 3: 2021 All right, Seamus, hand it over.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Let's have it. Have what? I ain't got time to
- 1:28Speaker 2: play games. This time you got to believe me. This
- 1:31Speaker 2: time I'm unhappy, so hand it over. You're not making
- 1:33Speaker 2: it very easy. I'm going to make it a lot tougher.
- 1:36Speaker 2: How much tougher can things get? You'd be surprised. I've
- 1:38Speaker 2: waited a long time for this. Well, I guess everything
- 1:42Speaker 2: comes to he who waits. You won't have to wait anymore.
- 1:45Speaker 2: You know something? I don't mind killing you at all.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Here's another exciting half hour with Richard Diamond, private detective,
- 1:55Speaker 4: starring Dick Powell.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Diamond Detective Agency, homicide made easy. With us, it's the
- 2:12Speaker 2: corpse that counts.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Oh, I just don't think I'll ever get used to it.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Hi, Helen.
- 2:17Speaker 6: Hi.
- 2:17Speaker 2: What are you doing? Right now, nothing. But I've been
- 2:20Speaker 2: considering a few push-ups or something just to keep my
- 2:23Speaker 2: heart going. I've been sitting behind this desk so long
- 2:26Speaker 2: my blood doesn't circulate anymore. It just lies around and puddles. Oh, Rick. Morning, Mr.
- 2:31Speaker 7: Diamond.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Oh, hold it a second, honey. Morning, Phil.
- 2:33Speaker 5: Who's Phil?
- 2:34Speaker 2: The postman. Oh. Special delivery for you. Return receipt on it.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Sign right here. Sure. Hmm. Okay, there you are, Phil.
- 2:41Speaker 8: Okay.
- 2:41Speaker 2: See you later, Mr. Diamond.
- 2:43Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Rick?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, dear?
- 2:44Speaker 5: Well, what is it?
- 2:46Speaker 10: Hmm? Hmm?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Well, he wanted to give me a letter. Oh? Special delivery.
- 2:50Speaker 11: Hmm?
- 2:51Speaker 2: From the city hall.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Oh, must be important. What does it say?
- 2:55Speaker 2: Oh, let's see. It says, uh, Mr. Richard Diamond, uh, address,
- 2:59Speaker 2: so on and so forth. Oh, yeah. Hmm. Dear sir,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you are hereby notified that under the laws of this state,
- 3:07Speaker 2: you can be called... Oh, for Pete's sake.
- 3:11Speaker 5: Well, what's the matter?
- 3:12Speaker 2: Of all the rotten.
- 3:13Speaker 5: Oh, stop making noises and tell me what's wrong.
- 3:15Speaker 2: You know what this stupid letter is about?
- 3:17Speaker 5: I've been trying to find out. I.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Honey, have got to report to the police commission and
- 3:22Speaker 2: get examined.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Oh, Rick, have you caught something?
- 3:25Speaker 2: Dear, in this state, the commission can call in any
- 3:27Speaker 2: private detective and give him a test to find out
- 3:30Speaker 2: whether or not he can still qualify to keep on operating.
- 3:32Speaker 5: You mean they give you a test like in school?
- 3:34Speaker 2: You're darn right. Oh, and it says here I've got
- 3:36Speaker 2: to appear today.
- 3:37Speaker 5: Well, what if you don't?
- 3:39Speaker 2: Well, I lose the bond I had to post when
- 3:40Speaker 2: I took out my license.
- 3:41Speaker 5: No, Rick, you better get right down there.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Oh, oh, and here's something else that's real cute. Guess
- 3:47Speaker 2: where I have to take the test.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Walt's precinct.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Has to be. Yeah, aren't they the little devils? Report
- 3:53Speaker 2: to Lieutenant Walter Levinson, 5th Precinct, Homicide.
- 3:56Speaker 5: What time, Rick? Time?
- 3:58Speaker 2: Ten minutes ago. Oh, bye, Rick. It was ten after
- 4:06Speaker 2: eleven when I hung up on Helen. It was twelve
- 4:08Speaker 2: after when I hit the street. The 5th Precinct was
- 4:10Speaker 2: a good ten blocks away and I was bounding into
- 4:12Speaker 2: the squad room by eleven eighteen. Needless to say, it
- 4:15Speaker 2: put a horrible strain on several unused ligaments. Four or
- 4:19Speaker 2: five boys in my charming profession were there ahead of me.
- 4:22Speaker 7: Well, boys, it looks like the commission's serious this time.
- 4:28Speaker 7: When they start dragging in their pets, namely one Richard Diamond,
- 4:33Speaker 7: you can bet their heads are going to start rolling.
- 4:35Speaker 2: What if their heads do start rolling, Romero? You got
- 4:37Speaker 2: a spare. Hey, Seamus, you're late. Well, sorry to notice.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Do you need a shave or have you been sleeping
- 4:44Speaker 2: with your head on a porcupine?
- 4:45Speaker 11: I ain't got no time for your crummy jokes, Diamond.
- 4:48Speaker 11: Take a seat and wait your turn. Thank you, Otis.
- 4:51Speaker 2: By the by, you're the last.
- 4:53Speaker 12: On the list.
- 4:55Speaker 2: That figured.
- 4:56Speaker 7: Yeah, take a seat, Diamond. Last on the list, huh?
- 5:02Speaker 7: Looks like you don't swing as much weight as you
- 5:04Speaker 7: thought you did.
- 5:05Speaker 2: At least now I can understand the reason for this examination. Oh,
- 5:09Speaker 2: you can, huh? Sure. Guys like you, Romero, would make
- 5:12Speaker 2: it necessary to clean up any organization.
- 5:15Speaker 7: I take it you don't think I'm a credit to
- 5:17Speaker 7: the profession, huh, Diamond?
- 5:18Speaker 2: Take it any way you like, but stick with the
- 5:20Speaker 2: first guess.
- 5:22Speaker 7: Oh, what's the matter, Rick? Maybe I'm taking some of
- 5:25Speaker 7: your business away, huh?
- 5:26Speaker 2: Look, Romero, the kind of business you handle would keep
- 5:29Speaker 2: me buying too much disinfectant. And as long as you're
- 5:32Speaker 2: asking what's wrong, I'll tell you. Two things.
- 5:35Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 5:35Speaker 2: You're a lousy detective and you'd burn your grandmother if
- 5:38Speaker 2: there was enough money in it.
- 5:40Speaker 7: Okay, what's the second bit, Ricky?
- 5:43Speaker 2: You just said it. You want to talk to me?
- 5:45Speaker 2: It's Mr. Diamond. You slip again, I'll put your jaw
- 5:48Speaker 2: in a position so you won't forget. Is that right? Oh,
- 5:51Speaker 2: get out of my way, Romero. Oh, sure, sure, Mr. Diamond. Hey, Rick,
- 5:55Speaker 2: can I see you a minute?
- 5:56Speaker 7: Yeah, by all means, see your friends and have a
- 5:59Speaker 7: good talk about me.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Oh, what is it, Alan? I just thought you might
- 6:03Speaker 2: be more comfortable over here. I would have called you sooner.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I was kind of hoping you might lay one on Romero. Oh,
- 6:08Speaker 2: I'd love to bust his face up. There's just no
- 6:11Speaker 2: excuse for him. Okay, so we all got our bonds
- 6:13Speaker 2: to worry about. Relax, you got a long wait. Okay, Diamond,
- 6:29Speaker 2: it's your turn now. Not really. Go on in. Sorry
- 6:33Speaker 2: you had to wait so long. Thank you, Sergeant Otis.
- 6:37Speaker 2: You're very kind. If I'd waited any longer, I'd have
- 6:40Speaker 2: been numb. And don't ask me where. Now, come in, Rag.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Bring your slate pencil. Yeah. Sit down, Mr. Diamond. In
- 6:52Speaker 2: a nice soft chair? Oh, I'm afraid I couldn't do that, Lieutenant.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I've gotten so used to that bench outside, sort of
- 6:58Speaker 2: grown to fit it, you might say. Oh, now, Rick,
- 7:01Speaker 2: I'm sorry, but there was nothing I could do about it.
- 7:03Speaker 6: Mr.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Diamond, Lieutenant. Huh? Oh, yeah. I hear you've been giving
- 7:07Speaker 2: that to a lot of people lately. Otis tells me
- 7:09Speaker 2: you and Pat Romero had some kind of discussion along
- 7:12Speaker 2: those lines. Why doesn't the government stick Otis out on
- 7:14Speaker 2: the beach somewhere and use him for radar? Let him
- 7:16Speaker 2: look for flying saucers. Rick, there's no sense in acting
- 7:19Speaker 2: like a child. The name is Diamond. Since when? Since
- 7:22Speaker 2: two hours of solid sitting, Lieutenant. Okay, Mr. Diamond. Unfortunately,
- 7:28Speaker 2: the commission set this thing up, Mr. Diamond. I had
- 7:30Speaker 2: nothing to do with it, Mr. Diamond. As for your waiting,
- 7:33Speaker 2: there's enough hard feelings about your relations with this department.
- 7:36Speaker 2: If I put you at the head of the list, Mr. Diamond... Oh,
- 7:38Speaker 2: shut up! Lieutenant! Lieutenant! Mr.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Diamond! Mr.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Diamond. That's better. It certainly is. Here's the first half
- 7:46Speaker 2: of the examination paper. You'll get the second half later.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Write the answers to these questions. How long have I got?
- 7:53Speaker 2: Take your time. Still mad? Yeah. How old? So for
- 8:05Speaker 2: the next 30 minutes, I wrote. I wrote and Walt stood.
- 8:09Speaker 2: It was something I could always count on with Walt,
- 8:11Speaker 2: and being my best friend, he never had been able
- 8:13Speaker 2: to get used to it. I looked up and caught
- 8:15Speaker 2: him a couple of times, looking out of the corner
- 8:17Speaker 2: of his eye to make sure I was getting them right.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Don't misunderstand. Walt would never give me the answers. He'd
- 8:23Speaker 2: just cough or blow his nose or something to show
- 8:26Speaker 2: me I wasn't on the right track. Hmm? Oh. Oh? Well,
- 8:41Speaker 2: there you are, Lieutenant. Thank you, Mr. Diamond. Am I finished?
- 8:46Speaker 2: You most certainly are not. Like the others before you, Mr. Diamond,
- 8:49Speaker 2: you will have to solve, to my complete satisfaction, a
- 8:52Speaker 2: hypothetical case of homicide. And then come back here and
- 8:55Speaker 2: fill in the second half of the examination. Oh, for
- 8:57Speaker 2: Pete's sake, Walt, I did that in police school. It's oh,
- 8:59Speaker 2: for Pete's sake, Lieutenant. Oh, all right. One moment, Mr. Diamond.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I'll get the man who's going to give you the test. Otis. Yeah, Lieutenant?
- 9:08Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Would you mind coming in here and taking Mr. Diamond
- 9:11Speaker 2: down to the basement? He's ready for the test, huh? Yes, Sergeant,
- 9:15Speaker 2: he's ready. Now, there's a dummy in that room there, Diamond.
- 9:28Speaker 2: You sure leave yourself wide open, Otis. Thanks.
- 9:32Speaker 11: Now, the dummy, or in this case, the victim, has
- 9:35Speaker 11: been murdered. You will go in and try to solve
- 9:38Speaker 11: the murder to the best of your ability. If you
- 9:40Speaker 11: are intelligent and observing, you will locate the necessary clues
- 9:44Speaker 11: which have been placed about the room.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Go on in. How long have I got, Sergeant?
- 9:49Speaker 10: 30 minutes.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Start now. Go ahead in. Otis. Otis. Oh. now come on, Chalmers.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You ain't gonna tell me you solved it already. No, Otis,
- 10:04Speaker 2: I ain't. But there's something I think you should know. Yeah, what?
- 10:08Speaker 2: There are two victims in this room. And I hate
- 10:10Speaker 2: to be the one to tell you, but I'm afraid
- 10:11Speaker 2: one of them isn't really a dummy. What do you mean?
- 10:13Speaker 2: One of them is a body, and it's very dead.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Get the lieutenants.
- 10:17Speaker 11: Well, there.
- 10:22Speaker 7: You are, Walt.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Pat Romero. Shot through the head. Oh, no, no, no.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Shut the door, Otis. There, yeah. And lock it. Stand
- 10:34Speaker 2: in front of it. Don't let anybody in. How did
- 10:36Speaker 2: this happen? How did Romero get shot in my department? Oh,
- 10:38Speaker 2: what will the commissioner say? Lieutenant. You shut up. Walt, relax.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Will you take it easy now? Oh, sure, sure. Relax.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Take it easy. When the commissioner hears about this, I'll
- 10:46Speaker 2: have a lot of time to relax on a beat
- 10:48Speaker 2: in Flatbush. Look, Walt. And the newspapers. What's going to
- 10:50Speaker 2: happen when they get wind of this? Listen, Walt. Private
- 10:52Speaker 2: detective shot in lab room of 5th Precinct. Homicide. Relax.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Take it easy. Sure, sure. Well, at least shut up
- 10:58Speaker 2: long enough to hear what I've got to say. Rick,
- 11:00Speaker 2: what am I going to do? Well, now listen to me.
- 11:02Speaker 2: If we can solve this thing before anyone gets wind
- 11:05Speaker 2: of it, maybe it won't be so bad. You're right.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Maybe it won't. We'll keep this room closed up as
- 11:09Speaker 2: long as possible. Otis, if you let anyone in here,
- 11:11Speaker 2: I'll personally see that you never... Where are you going, Diamond?
- 11:14Speaker 2: I'm going to Romero's office. I'll call you from there.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Make a check on his body and have all the
- 11:18Speaker 2: dope ready for him. Oh, don't you worry about the dope, Rick.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I've got more dope in this department than any other
- 11:24Speaker 2: in the whole world. I've got the biggest. Otis! Uh, yeah, Lieutenant? Oh!
- 11:31Speaker 2: Walt chased Otis up the wall and I headed for
- 11:33Speaker 2: Pat Romero's office. Everything was happening so fast, I didn't
- 11:36Speaker 2: take time to think much past the fact that the
- 11:38Speaker 2: private detective profession had taken a step in the right
- 11:41Speaker 2: direction when someone retired Romero. But Walt was in a
- 11:44Speaker 2: spot and someone had broken the law, so it looked
- 11:46Speaker 2: like it was up to me to try and tie
- 11:48Speaker 2: things together. I got to Romero's building, went up to
- 11:51Speaker 2: the eighth floor, tripped over a couple of rats having
- 11:54Speaker 2: a nervous breakdown because he couldn't find their way out,
- 11:56Speaker 2: found his office, opened the door... and started feeling sorry
- 12:00Speaker 2: for myself right away. I never saw him. All I
- 12:06Speaker 2: remember is something black and shiny in front of my
- 12:09Speaker 2: face just as I hit the floor. When I tried
- 12:13Speaker 2: to take a better look, the bright, shiny something kissed
- 12:15Speaker 2: me right in the mouth and I went to sleep
- 12:17Speaker 2: the hard way. When I finally came around, it was
- 12:21Speaker 2: like trying to tiptoe through an acre of beach balls.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I stumbled a couple of times, spit out a little blood...
- 12:28Speaker 2: Very little, because the way I felt, there couldn't have
- 12:30Speaker 2: been too much left. When I finally got around to
- 12:32Speaker 2: a normal way of thinking, I perceived two things. It
- 12:35Speaker 2: was still daytime, and the office of one Mr. Pat Romero, deceased,
- 12:39Speaker 2: was a wreck. Fifth Precinct, Homicide. Well? Who is this first? Oh, now,
- 12:51Speaker 2: come on. This is Diamond. Well, I thought so, but
- 12:53Speaker 2: I'm not going to admit anything for a while, even
- 12:55Speaker 2: my name. Anyone find out about... Shh, no. did you
- 12:58Speaker 2: find out i walked into his office and got my
- 13:00Speaker 2: brain scattered by whom by whom i don't know i
- 13:03Speaker 2: wish i did i have a very sore head well
- 13:06Speaker 2: romero was shot all right but we can't find the
- 13:08Speaker 2: bullet that's not a very big room we'll find it
- 13:10Speaker 2: but in the meantime here's something else romero had ten
- 13:13Speaker 2: thousand dollars in cash on him new bills go ahead
- 13:16Speaker 2: that's all we've come up with so far we'll have
- 13:18Speaker 2: more to go on when we find that bullet maybe
- 13:20Speaker 2: it's still in him went clean through messed up his
- 13:23Speaker 2: pretty patent leather haircut what what do you mean what
- 13:26Speaker 2: i said the bullet oh never mind never mind walt
- 13:28Speaker 2: Bless your little pointed head. You just gave me an idea.
- 13:31Speaker 2: About what? About the guy who worked me over a
- 13:33Speaker 2: little while ago. Okay. Anything else? Yeah. Hurry up and
- 13:36Speaker 2: find that missing bullet. Walt had said something about patent
- 13:42Speaker 2: leather when he referred to Romero's greasy hairdo. That was
- 13:45Speaker 2: all I needed. It opened a door someplace and there
- 13:48Speaker 2: sitting with its legs crossed was the biggest hunch I've
- 13:50Speaker 2: ever seen. And it was wearing patent leather shoes. The
- 13:54Speaker 2: only guy I could think of who would know a
- 13:56Speaker 2: man like Romero and still wear patent leather shoes in
- 13:59Speaker 2: the afternoon was a local gambler with a reputation as
- 14:02Speaker 2: a fashion plate. Monocle, striped trousers, and always the patent
- 14:06Speaker 2: leather shoes. In fact, that's where he got his nickname,
- 14:09Speaker 2: the patent leather kid. This was a small clue and
- 14:12Speaker 2: I knew it, but one thing was in my favor.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Anyone who would tear up Romero's office and kick me
- 14:16Speaker 2: in the face had to be a bad little boy.
- 14:19Speaker 2: And the patent leather kid was tight casting. The kid's
- 14:22Speaker 2: real name was Amos Fletcher, and he ran a small
- 14:24Speaker 2: club over on 14th Street. Oh, I'm sorry, my friend,
- 14:33Speaker 2: but the... Well... Hello, Fletcher. I was going to say
- 14:37Speaker 2: I'm sorry, my friend, but the place isn't open until six.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I got a few questions. Come back at six. Fletcher,
- 14:43Speaker 2: I'm a little unhappy right about now. You answer the
- 14:46Speaker 2: questions like a good boy or I'll kick you all
- 14:48Speaker 2: over the place. You mind if I call a few
- 14:50Speaker 2: of my boys to watch? If you like. Tell them
- 14:53Speaker 2: I got a. 38 under my arm that goes off
- 14:55Speaker 2: when I get excited. Got a few questions. Come back
- 15:04Speaker 2: at six. Fletcher, I'm a little unhappy right about now.
- 15:08Speaker 2: You answer the questions like a good boy or I'll
- 15:10Speaker 2: kick you all over the place. You mind if I
- 15:12Speaker 2: call a few of my boys to watch? If you like.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Tell them I got a. 38 under my arm that
- 15:17Speaker 2: goes off when I get excited. Tell them I sort
- 15:19Speaker 2: of lose my head when I get kicked in the
- 15:21Speaker 2: mouth and don't get the answers I want. I think
- 15:25Speaker 2: you better believe me. So you got kicked in the mouth. Yeah,
- 15:29Speaker 2: by a pair of patent leather shoes, just like yours.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I had nothing to do with it. You know a
- 15:33Speaker 2: guy named Romero? Romero? No, I don't know a guy
- 15:37Speaker 2: by that name. Where were you an hour ago? Right here.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I have a couple of friends to prove it. We
- 15:42Speaker 2: were playing cards, canasta. Okay, okay. I'm glad you're satisfied, Mr.
- 15:46Speaker 10: Diamond.
- 15:46Speaker 2: You said I was satisfied. No? Not a bit. Well,
- 15:50Speaker 2: what about this Romero? He got himself shot. Badly? As
- 15:53Speaker 2: bad as you can get shot. Well, Seamus, that's a
- 15:56Speaker 2: chance you boys take. Maybe Romero would have lived longer
- 15:59Speaker 2: in another racket. Think about it, Seamus. I'll think about it, Fletcher.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I'll think about it a long time. Good. Let me
- 16:08Speaker 2: know what you decide. You'll hear about it. THE END Homicide,
- 16:33Speaker 2: 5th Precinct. Walt, check and find out where Amos Fletcher
- 16:36Speaker 2: does his banking. See if he's made any big withdrawals lately.
- 16:39Speaker 2: The patent leather kit? What's he got to do with it?
- 16:41Speaker 2: Just check. Okay, okay. What about the bullet? Have you
- 16:44Speaker 2: found that yet? No. Oh, swell. Did you find anything else?
- 16:47Speaker 2: A bunch of stuff in Romero's wallet. What? Old driver's license,
- 16:50Speaker 2: social security numbers, business cards. A card from a real
- 16:54Speaker 2: estate office that might be important. Why should it be?
- 16:56Speaker 2: A notation on the back. It says, call Miss Crockett
- 16:58Speaker 2: about new lease. Date after that. Yesterday. New lease?
- 17:02Speaker 10: Yes.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Romero has an office. I wonder what this new lease is.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Why don't you check? Crockett Real Estate, Lexington Avenue.
- 17:08Speaker 7: Bye.
- 17:08Speaker 2: I'll re-borrow her.
- 17:11Speaker 3: What?
- 17:24Speaker 12: Something I could... Well, well, well.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Good afternoon.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Ain't it so.
- 17:32Speaker 6: Those can be before you rolled them gorgeous shoulders through
- 17:37Speaker 6: that door. Sit down, Sonny.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Relax.
- 17:42Speaker 12: Have yourself a drink.
- 17:44Speaker 2: No, thanks. A little early in the day for me.
- 17:46Speaker 12: A little early. Well, you'll excuse me, won't you, Sonny?
- 17:49Speaker 9: If it gets any later, my stomach's liable to rust.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Get it? Yeah, all over me.
- 18:02Speaker 12: What's your name, sonny?
- 18:04Speaker 2: Uh.
- 18:04Speaker 6: Gotta know, you know, if I'm going to sell you
- 18:07Speaker 6: some real estate.
- 18:09Speaker 12: Play football in school?
- 18:11Speaker 2: Uh.
- 18:11Speaker 12: Figures, figures. Oh, look at them shoulders.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Look, sweetheart.
- 18:16Speaker 11: Huh?
- 18:17Speaker 12: What'd you say?
- 18:19Speaker 2: I said look, sweetheart. Oh. Why?
- 18:22Speaker 6: No sense in raising all these goosebumps for nothing.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Sweetheart, huh? Hmm.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Well, what can I.
- 18:31Speaker 9: Do for you, Sonny? You want Madison Avenue at 50
- 18:34Speaker 9: cents up.
- 18:35Speaker 6: Front for us?
- 18:38Speaker 2: Hey, that's pretty good.
- 18:39Speaker 12: You want to have a drink, Sonny?
- 18:42Speaker 2: No, thanks. I'd just like to ask you one question.
- 18:45Speaker 12: Go right ahead, Sonny.
- 18:46Speaker 9: You know, I may not look it, but I'm considered
- 18:52Speaker 9: one of the best real estate agents in this state.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Do you know a man named Romero? Sure, I know him.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Did you just rent him some offices?
- 19:02Speaker 5: Yep.
- 19:03Speaker 12: Signed the lease yesterday.
- 19:04Speaker 9: A whole new set of offices over on 46th Street.
- 19:08Speaker 2: 46th Street? Where on 46th?
- 19:11Speaker 12: Oh, right.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Say, are you a cop? What makes you think that?
- 19:17Speaker 12: Oh, I don't know. Mayor's offices are right across from.
- 19:22Speaker 2: The police station. The 5th Precinct.
- 19:24Speaker 12: Sonny, you bother me. You're too nervous.
- 19:26Speaker 6: Now, why don't you just sit down and get comfortable.
- 19:29Speaker 12: And we'll talk.
- 19:30Speaker 2: What building are the offices in?
- 19:32Speaker 12: Carson Building on the 4th floor.
- 19:34Speaker 6: But why don't you just take it easy, Sonny?
- 19:36Speaker 5: Thanks, sweetheart.
- 19:38Speaker 6: Oh, you devil, you.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Now, look, Rick, we know Romero... was shot in this
- 19:50Speaker 2: room while he was either sitting or kneeling. Because the
- 19:52Speaker 2: bullet entered his head at a high angle. Yeah. I
- 19:54Speaker 2: think he was shot with a rifle, Walt. A rifle? Yeah,
- 19:57Speaker 2: from across the street. Romero rented some new offices in
- 19:59Speaker 2: the Carson building, directly opposite this building. I just saw them.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Somebody tore in those part two. Well, I checked on
- 20:05Speaker 2: Amos Fletcher. Does his banking at the National. Made a
- 20:07Speaker 2: withdrawal this morning. Ten thousand bucks in new bills. Who
- 20:11Speaker 2: is it? Come on in. As a shamus, how did it, Lieutenant? Walt,
- 20:15Speaker 2: come here. Come on. Yeah? Now, look. Fourth floor. Carson building,
- 20:19Speaker 2: right over there. See the open window? Yeah? Now, if
- 20:22Speaker 2: someone in one of those offices fired a rifle, and
- 20:25Speaker 2: there's no bullet hole in the lower portion of the
- 20:27Speaker 2: window in this room, that means it went through the
- 20:29Speaker 2: open part. So Romero would have to be standing, oh,
- 20:32Speaker 2: let's say, about, uh, oh, about right here. That would
- 20:36Speaker 2: make the slug somewhere out in the hall. Right. But
- 20:38Speaker 2: it would have to pass through the door. There's no
- 20:40Speaker 2: hole in the door.
- 20:41Speaker 11: Hey, the door was open when me and the Chalmers
- 20:43Speaker 11: came down here.
- 20:44Speaker 2: That's right, Walt. Let's see if we can find that bullet.
- 20:46Speaker 2: What was Romero doing down here?
- 20:48Speaker 11: Oh, he was just finishing this part of the test
- 20:50Speaker 11: when I went up to get Diamond.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Hey, Walt, Walt. I think I got the bullet. Yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Under the rug. Yeah, you'll have to pry it out.
- 20:58Speaker 2: It's in the floor pretty deep. Okay. Who did he
- 21:01Speaker 2: go after? Amos Fletcher? That's right. What's your proof? Not much.
- 21:04Speaker 2: It's all a guess. You know what kind of a
- 21:07Speaker 2: guy Romero was. Yeah, the worst. Well, let's see. Romero
- 21:10Speaker 2: had $ 10, 000 in his pocket. Fletcher took out $ 10, 000 this morning.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Sounds like blackmail. Could be. Somebody was tearing Romero's old
- 21:17Speaker 2: office apart looking for something when I broke in on him.
- 21:20Speaker 2: And got a patent leather shoe in the face for
- 21:22Speaker 2: my trouble. That isn't very much to go on. Well,
- 21:24Speaker 2: how about this? I asked Fletcher if he knew Romero.
- 21:27Speaker 2: He said no. But as I left, he mentioned that
- 21:29Speaker 2: Romero probably got killed because, like myself, he was in
- 21:32Speaker 2: the wrong racket. How did he know that? Still not
- 21:35Speaker 2: enough to convict him. Would a confession do it, Grouchy?
- 21:38Speaker 2: You know darn good and well a confession is the
- 21:40Speaker 2: only thing that would do it. That or find the
- 21:42Speaker 2: murder weapon and prove it belongs to Fletcher. No, you're
- 21:44Speaker 2: so technical. Okay, I'm going back to the office. Give
- 21:48Speaker 2: me about ten minutes and have Otis go. Oh, not
- 21:52Speaker 2: as Sergeant Otis. Just have him call and give Fletcher, oh,
- 21:55Speaker 2: a friendly tip. From the way those two officers were
- 21:58Speaker 2: torn up, it's my guess that Fletcher hasn't found what
- 22:00Speaker 2: he's looking for yet. Just tell him I found it.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Found what? Found anything. You don't have to be specific.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Who said I was gonna be? Gonna be what, you
- 22:09Speaker 2: mallet head?
- 22:10Speaker 12: Specific.
- 22:12Speaker 2: You don't even know what it means.
- 22:14Speaker 11: It means precisely formulated or restricted.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Huh?
- 22:19Speaker 2: Oh, here, I got the bullet out of the floor, Lieutenant. Bye, Walt.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I left the precinct and headed back for Broadway in
- 22:30Speaker 2: my office on the corner of 53rd. I knew that
- 22:32Speaker 2: Amos Fletcher, the patent leather kid, was the boy we wanted.
- 22:35Speaker 2: But whether or not he'd fall for the gag was
- 22:37Speaker 2: a matter of luck. Luck is a big part of
- 22:39Speaker 2: my business. So I went to my office and sat
- 22:42Speaker 2: down behind my desk to wait. In case Amos Fletcher
- 22:46Speaker 2: showed up, I wanted to be sure to be able
- 22:47Speaker 2: to hold up my end of the conversation. So I
- 22:50Speaker 2: took out my. 38 and put it across my knees.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Diamond Detective Agency. If you've slaughtered a dozen, no difference
- 22:59Speaker 2: to me. One or fifty, it's the same old fee.
- 23:02Speaker 2: What kind of a remark is that, Seamus? What kind
- 23:05Speaker 2: of a remark did it sound like, Sergeant? I ain't
- 23:07Speaker 2: got time to answer that. I called Fletcher. Good. What
- 23:10Speaker 2: did you tell him? Well, I was pretty good, as
- 23:12Speaker 2: a matter of fact.
- 23:13Speaker 8: I disguised my voice like this, and I says, Amos Fletcher,
- 23:18Speaker 8: and he says, yeah. So I says, just a little
- 23:21Speaker 8: tip I thought you might want to know about. Richard
- 23:24Speaker 8: Diamond has got that which you has been looking for.
- 23:26Speaker 8: He found it in Romero's new offices.
- 23:30Speaker 2: How was that, Seamus? Brilliant change of voice. You think
- 23:33Speaker 2: it'll work? Put down the phone. You hear me, Seamus?
- 23:37Speaker 2: You think it'll work? Hang it up.
- 23:39Speaker 10: Hey, Diamond.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Oh, that's better. All right, Chalmers, let's have it. Have what?
- 23:45Speaker 2: I haven't got time to play games. This time, you've
- 23:47Speaker 2: got to believe me. This time, I'm unhappy, so hand
- 23:49Speaker 2: it over. You're making it pretty tough, Fletcher. I'm going
- 23:51Speaker 2: to make it a lot tougher.
- 23:52Speaker 8: Oh.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Now, isn't that a pretty big gun to be carrying around?
- 23:57Speaker 2: It's a little big, sure, but it does everything I
- 23:59Speaker 2: want it to. Mm-hmm. A German schmeischer, isn't it? That's right.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Put a stock on it, and you could shoot it
- 24:04Speaker 2: like a rifle. I'm going to count three, and then
- 24:06Speaker 2: I'm just going to shoot it. Now, why don't you
- 24:08Speaker 2: be smart and give me the stuff? Let it ring.
- 24:12Speaker 2: It might be a paying client. It might. Let it ring.
- 24:16Speaker 2: You shot Pat Romero from his new offices across the
- 24:18Speaker 2: street from the 5th Precinct, didn't you, Fletcher? Is that
- 24:21Speaker 2: what you say? Yeah. What was he doing, blackmailing you?
- 24:24Speaker 2: You gave him $ 10, 000 sometime today. You know, you're talking
- 24:27Speaker 2: yourself right into a long box. Why did you shoot
- 24:30Speaker 2: him at a police station? I paid him the $ 10, 000
- 24:32Speaker 2: and he handed me the stuff and I thought it
- 24:34Speaker 2: was a McCoy. I went back to my office and
- 24:37Speaker 2: started checking through the stuff.
- 24:38Speaker 3: That phone's gonna bother me!
- 24:43Speaker 2: There. You checked the stuff back in your office and
- 24:45Speaker 2: you found out it was phony. You got worried, went
- 24:47Speaker 2: back to Romero's offices. He wasn't there. He was across
- 24:50Speaker 2: the street in the 5th Precinct. You spotted him through
- 24:53Speaker 2: the window and shot him. That's right, Seamus. I saw
- 24:55Speaker 2: him talking to a cop and figured he might be
- 24:57Speaker 2: spilling his guts. I waited until the cop left and
- 25:00Speaker 2: I nailed him. Now give me the stuff. You'll have
- 25:02Speaker 2: to believe me, Fletcher. I haven't got it. Don't give
- 25:05Speaker 2: me that. I got a tip. Sure you did. That
- 25:07Speaker 2: was Sergeant Otis from Homicide. You're crazy. Am I? He said,
- 25:12Speaker 2: just a little tip. I thought maybe you might want
- 25:14Speaker 2: to know about. Richard Diamond has got that which you
- 25:17Speaker 2: has been looking for. What did Romero have on you?
- 25:21Speaker 2: Some records. You know something, Diamond? I don't mind killing
- 25:26Speaker 2: you at all. Stop it, Fletcher. I got Walt.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Fletcher.
- 25:32Speaker 11: Fletcher.
- 25:33Speaker 2: How is he, Walt? Pretty bad. I didn't know you
- 25:35Speaker 2: had a gun, Rick. Neither did Fletcher.
- 25:37Speaker 5: Diamond.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 25:38Speaker 3: Phone for a doctor.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Hurry. I'll do it, Rick. Hey, who tore this phone
- 25:43Speaker 2: out of the wall? Fletcher got tired of hearing it ring.
- 25:58Speaker 12: What's that you're playing, Rick?
- 26:00Speaker 2: Oh, it's an old thing. Oh.
- 26:04Speaker 5: Yes.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Hello, Helen. This is Walt.
- 26:06Speaker 12: Yes, Walt. He's right here.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Thanks, dear.
- 26:08Speaker 10: Hello, Walt.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Rick. We found the stuff Romero was blackmailing Fletcher with
- 26:12Speaker 2: in a safety deposit box. A bunch of books that
- 26:14Speaker 2: exposed one of Fletcher's old rackets, enough to send him
- 26:16Speaker 2: away for life. Well, bully for you. Oh, and something else.
- 26:19Speaker 2: You better get down here right away.
- 26:20Speaker 7: What for?
- 26:21Speaker 2: You didn't finish your test. You don't want to flunk it,
- 26:22Speaker 2: do you? What? You got the first part all right,
- 26:25Speaker 2: the hypothetical part I can cover for you. But you
- 26:27Speaker 2: didn't do anything on the last part of the written examination.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Now you listen to me, fatty.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Fatty.
- 26:31Speaker 2: The fattest. I've chased my head off solving a case
- 26:34Speaker 2: and getting your big feet... Big feet? Big feet out
- 26:36Speaker 2: of trouble. I've gotten shot at, insulted, kicked in the face. Well,
- 26:39Speaker 2: low stakes. I don't want to hear any more of
- 26:40Speaker 2: your lame brain excuses. You just fix it up for
- 26:43Speaker 2: me and I'm going to go in and drop a
- 26:44Speaker 2: few subtle hints to the commissioner about his nasty old lieutenant.
- 26:47Speaker 2: You wouldn't. Oh, but I would. What did you say?
- 26:51Speaker 2: What am I going to do? What am I going
- 26:52Speaker 2: to do? Take the test for me. Fill out the
- 26:55Speaker 2: answers yourself. Cheat.
- 26:56Speaker 5: Cheat?
- 26:57Speaker 2: Cheat.
- 26:57Speaker 7: But, but, but.
- 26:59Speaker 2: No, that's what you always say.
- 27:01Speaker 5: Now, what were we talking about?
- 27:03Speaker 2: Oh, honey, you were asking me about this little old song.
- 27:07Speaker 12: Pretty.
- 27:08Speaker 5: What is it?
- 27:09Speaker 2: Well, I'll give a listen. Oh, how I miss you tonight.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Miss you when lights are low Oh, how I need you.
- 27:29Speaker 10: Tonight More than you'll ever know Each moment though we're
- 27:43Speaker 10: apart You're never out of my heart. But I'd rather
- 27:55Speaker 10: be lonely and wait for you only. Oh, pal, how.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I miss you tonight. Okay? Oh, it's very pretty. Thank you.
- 28:15Speaker 12: Shall I?
- 28:16Speaker 2: Might as well.
- 28:18Speaker 11: Yes?
- 28:19Speaker 2: May I please speak to Mr. Diamond? Oh, my goodness, Rick. What? Yes,
- 28:23Speaker 2: but look out.
- 28:24Speaker 11: Oh, all right.
- 28:25Speaker 7: Hello.
- 28:26Speaker 2: You've passed, Mr. Diamond. 99 out of 100. 99 out
- 28:29Speaker 2: of 100, hmm? Which one did I miss? The last one.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I know you wouldn't care, so I let Otis fill
- 28:33Speaker 2: it in for you. No. Yes, the commissioner wants to
- 28:36Speaker 2: see you tomorrow morning. Why? What was the question? does
- 28:40Speaker 2: the cleanup squad belong? Well, what did Otis write for
- 28:42Speaker 2: an answer? The Department of Sanitation. Tomorrow at 11, Rick.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Au revoir.
