- 0:04Speaker 1: Great, Dallas great and joining us right now. You can
- 0:06Speaker 1: listen to him all the time on baseball.
- 0:07Speaker 2: He's dead.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Check out his tweets, he's live tweet and he's doing
- 0:12Speaker 1: watch parties, the whole deal. And now he's joining us
- 0:14Speaker 1: for fifteen minutes for a old chat. Dallas, great to
- 0:17Speaker 1: see you, and I'll ask how are you? But also
- 0:20Speaker 1: how much are you enjoying watching some of these starters
- 0:24Speaker 1: really eat in the postseason this year?
- 0:27Speaker 3: I am doing well, and I have at times had
- 0:31Speaker 3: to almost like quarantine myself off in a closet somewhere
- 0:34Speaker 3: so I can thoroughly just enjoy what I'm watching happen
- 0:38Speaker 3: on the mound, because I got a lot of distractions.
- 0:41Speaker 3: But I look, I deserve it. I think we all
- 0:43Speaker 3: deserve to watch what we are seeing unfold on the
- 0:47Speaker 3: diamond this postseason. And I love the idea that the
- 0:50Speaker 3: starting pitcher is almost circling back and reminding us just
- 0:55Speaker 3: how important it is to have a horse, if not
- 0:58Speaker 3: two or three, that you can run out there and
- 1:01Speaker 3: start the race and finish it as well. I think
- 1:05Speaker 3: if you just look at what we've watched with the Dodgers,
- 1:08Speaker 3: and you look at what we have seen unfold with
- 1:11Speaker 3: the Milwaukee Brewers. You were watching a team I think
- 1:14Speaker 3: in the Brewers who showed up and said, we feel
- 1:16Speaker 3: pretty good about our ability to match up, and you
- 1:19Speaker 3: know what, we'll call them out getters. We've got a
- 1:21Speaker 3: starter or two that we like and we'll label them
- 1:23Speaker 3: as such. But from there, we've got a group of
- 1:24Speaker 3: outgetters and we're gonna get these outs however we can fantastic.
- 1:28Speaker 3: You want to know what the Dodgers did as they
- 1:30Speaker 3: rolled in and said, Hey, look at that. That's a stallion.
- 1:34Speaker 3: That's a stallion. That's a stallion. You know we call that.
- 1:37Speaker 3: We call that a stable. We're gonna open up that door.
- 1:40Speaker 3: We're gonna let the horses run. And our stable of
- 1:42Speaker 3: starters have led the charge. So I think it's just
- 1:45Speaker 3: a great refresher. It's a reminder of what you need
- 1:49Speaker 3: to have happen on the mound and how it's unfolded
- 1:52Speaker 3: on the game's biggest stage under the games of brightest
- 1:55Speaker 3: lights in October. The starters reign Supreme.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Dedise is it kind of like an analogy with football,
- 2:02Speaker 4: where the running back or the wide receivers bust it
- 2:07Speaker 4: all the way down the field. And then they give
- 2:08Speaker 4: it to the star running back who didn't get any
- 2:10Speaker 4: touches to push it in. Because there's a case where yes,
- 2:15Speaker 4: these relie these starters have been legit and they are
- 2:18Speaker 4: cy Young Si Young contenders all that stuff. But across
- 2:21Speaker 4: the playoffs right now, these bullpens, they're down there like,
- 2:25Speaker 4: oh my gosh, I'm exhausted. Wait a minute, these guys
- 2:28Speaker 4: are getting all the flowers, like we did all the
- 2:31Speaker 4: work for one hundred and sixty two games, and now
- 2:33Speaker 4: these guys are like, I've only made twenty starts. Beside Yamamoto,
- 2:38Speaker 4: I'm super fresh. So is it a case of we
- 2:41Speaker 4: don't want to go to the bullpen because they're not
- 2:42Speaker 4: as good or because these guys are gassed.
- 2:46Speaker 3: This is the time of year where if you have
- 2:48Speaker 3: a guy who was starting the ballgame for you and
- 2:51Speaker 3: is showing you because both you boys know right, phrase,
- 2:54Speaker 3: come on, what are what are we looking for? There's
- 2:56Speaker 3: two things that are gonna tell us just how things
- 2:58Speaker 3: are going on the mount for us right the baseball
- 3:01Speaker 3: and the other team. If I'm backing up third, guess
- 3:03Speaker 3: how guess how good things are going?
- 3:04Speaker 2: Well?
- 3:05Speaker 3: They ain't going very well, are they? And if the
- 3:06Speaker 3: baseball is not making its way back to you, Kratzy,
- 3:09Speaker 3: well then things aren't going well either, right because you're
- 3:12Speaker 3: no longer a catcher. You're just somebody who's kind of
- 3:14Speaker 3: directing traffic out there. So I think what it is is,
- 3:19Speaker 3: if we're talking about running plays and pushing it across
- 3:21Speaker 3: the goal line, you have guys that are doing their
- 3:24Speaker 3: job and doing their due diligence in a starter's perspective,
- 3:28Speaker 3: and then you also have guys like look at the
- 3:30Speaker 3: Mariner's bullpen who are running, who are doing a great
- 3:33Speaker 3: job of running the tush push when necessary. Guys like
- 3:36Speaker 3: Bizardo who are coming out and giving you a career
- 3:39Speaker 3: long career career long and innings pitched for long outings
- 3:44Speaker 3: in the postseason at the very end of the season.
- 3:47Speaker 3: So I think what we're seeing is if team, when
- 3:49Speaker 3: teams are doing it right, it's a beautiful concert. It's
- 3:52Speaker 3: a beautiful symphony of the starters and the bullpen working
- 3:55Speaker 3: together in unison. But I think at right now, at
- 3:59Speaker 3: this time, it's we understand how important those bullpen arms
- 4:03Speaker 3: are to us right now and will be to us
- 4:06Speaker 3: in the future here, and we want to do everything
- 4:08Speaker 3: we can to squeeze as much juice as we can
- 4:12Speaker 3: out of the starter if he's allowing us to right
- 4:14Speaker 3: going back to a SNeW going back to a Yamamoto,
- 4:17Speaker 3: when you have a little bit of a cushion, you're
- 4:19Speaker 3: sending this dude back out into the ninth inning with
- 4:21Speaker 3: ninety seven pitches under his belt, not because you're afraid
- 4:24Speaker 3: of what the bullpen can't do, but because you know
- 4:27Speaker 3: what you have just watched unfold for eight innings and
- 4:30Speaker 3: what Yamamoto can do.
- 4:33Speaker 5: All right, So to that point, what does a team
- 4:35Speaker 5: like the Brewers have to do to get back into
- 4:37Speaker 5: this series? What can they do? They're not scoring, so
- 4:40Speaker 5: how do they figure this out?
- 4:43Speaker 3: Afraid? I mean that's where it starts and stops, my dude,
- 4:46Speaker 3: and you know that you got to swing the bat.
- 4:48Speaker 3: We got to figure out how to generate offense. How
- 4:50Speaker 3: do we get on base if it's not going to
- 4:51Speaker 3: be the long ball that's going to propel us. How
- 4:53Speaker 3: do we build innings? How do we make these at
- 4:56Speaker 3: bats competitive? Because I think that's something that has been
- 4:59Speaker 3: taken away from this is that the bats just don't
- 5:01Speaker 3: seem very competitive, and that doesn't seem like outside of
- 5:03Speaker 3: the Churio swing, like, like, what do we what are
- 5:06Speaker 3: we getting? What are we doing? It doesn't seem like
- 5:09Speaker 3: there's much at all Like the I just I go
- 5:13Speaker 3: back to when I'm watching competitive at bats unfold. It
- 5:17Speaker 3: feels like after a pitcher too, you get an idea
- 5:20Speaker 3: of where a guy's going to be able to fight
- 5:22Speaker 3: you off and defend. And then I think what I'm
- 5:24Speaker 3: seeing right now is guys almost cash in at bats.
- 5:26Speaker 3: And it's tough to think that way because this is
- 5:28Speaker 3: a moment in time where if you're the Brewers, you're
- 5:30Speaker 3: a team who just doesn't swing and miss right. You
- 5:32Speaker 3: feel like you're constantly in the fight with your back
- 5:34Speaker 3: to ball ability, but you're just not generating any sort
- 5:37Speaker 3: of threat offensively. And a lot of that credit has
- 5:40Speaker 3: to go to what the pitchers have done, to what
- 5:43Speaker 3: the starters have done.
- 5:46Speaker 4: The Blue Jays Mariners series, What do you like the
- 5:49Speaker 4: most and what do you dislike the most that you've
- 5:51Speaker 4: seen just out of these two games. Not looking forward, I'm.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Not excited about the fact that, I mean, we we
- 6:00Speaker 3: identified a trio in varshow Clement and Vladdie, who were
- 6:04Speaker 3: lights out, who carried the work right, who carried the
- 6:07Speaker 3: water for him, and right now that's just not the case.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And what have they ran into, Well, they have ran
- 6:12Speaker 3: into some guys for the Mariners who they're getting outs
- 6:16Speaker 3: on the mound. Are they not to the tune of
- 6:18Speaker 3: what I was just talking about with the game even
- 6:20Speaker 3: that the bullpen comes in and picks up Gilbert who
- 6:23Speaker 3: came in on short rest, got through what three three
- 6:25Speaker 3: and a third or whatever it was, and the bullpen
- 6:27Speaker 3: comes in and does their job. So every reason that
- 6:31Speaker 3: the Mariners were supposed to be here is unfolding right
- 6:34Speaker 3: now because of the success that they've been able to
- 6:36Speaker 3: have on the mound, combination of the starters and their relievers,
- 6:40Speaker 3: and they're getting just enough offense at just the right time.
- 6:43Speaker 3: It's a team that was propelled largely by the long ball,
- 6:46Speaker 3: but you have guys like Polanco that are starting to
- 6:48Speaker 3: show up and get big hits at just the right time.
- 6:50Speaker 3: And when you have an offense that has guys like Crawford,
- 6:53Speaker 3: guys like Nailor that can start to contribute. When you
- 6:56Speaker 3: have Jay Rod show up and plug himself into the
- 7:00Speaker 3: middle of the lineup and start to produce in the CS,
- 7:04Speaker 3: we're talking Championship Championship Series, and that's where these guys
- 7:08Speaker 3: are starting to show up and reveal themselves. The lineup
- 7:10Speaker 3: starts to get a longer, so a little longer. So
- 7:12Speaker 3: now you've got out getters on the mound in the
- 7:14Speaker 3: rotation and the bullpen getting the job done. Frankly, not
- 7:18Speaker 3: being able to capitalize on opportunities offensively for the Blue Jays,
- 7:22Speaker 3: That's where the shortcoming is.

- 8:26Speaker 5: We talked to Tyler Kapner a little bit ago about
- 8:29Speaker 5: cal Rally and how awesome of a season he had.
- 8:31Speaker 5: I want to ask you this question, and I'm putting
- 8:33Speaker 5: you on the spot here a little bit. But MVP
- 8:36Speaker 5: race him book, Judge.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Book, come on book you free book.
- 8:41Speaker 6: Let's go look lookkot me let me say okay, let
- 8:49Speaker 6: me let me ask you. Let me ask you, uh,
- 8:51Speaker 6: what is the hill that you are standing on built
- 8:54Speaker 6: upon when it comes to when it comes to judge.
- 8:57Speaker 5: See, I didn't want to be put on the fut No,
- 8:59Speaker 5: I don't care for me. For me, it's and when
- 9:03Speaker 5: not all people talk about but the average to me
- 9:05Speaker 5: is a big component that is and that's maybe that's
- 9:09Speaker 5: the old school way and me thinking of it.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Hey, I'm with I'm with you when it comes to
- 9:16Speaker 3: respecting that. And because I have an appreciation just like
- 9:20Speaker 3: you do for what it takes to be a guy
- 9:22Speaker 3: who can pound the ball out of any yard, out
- 9:25Speaker 3: of any park, National park or Big League park, it
- 9:28Speaker 3: doesn't matter. And that's who Aaron Judge is. But that
- 9:31Speaker 3: same dude can also be the catalyst to a beginning
- 9:35Speaker 3: by shooting the ball the other way, by picking up
- 9:37Speaker 3: a stake with runners on second and third. He doesn't
- 9:39Speaker 3: have a pitch that he can drive, but he has
- 9:41Speaker 3: a pitch that he can shoot the other way. Those
- 9:43Speaker 3: guys are extremely valuable, and when that individual represents the
- 9:47Speaker 3: most powerful threat that you have and also is representative
- 9:50Speaker 3: of keeping the line moving, that matters. So I am
- 9:55Speaker 3: not somebody who just poo poos the average and says, yeah,
- 9:58Speaker 3: but let's take a look at some of the other
- 9:59Speaker 3: numbers here. But I am somebody who absolutely appreciates what
- 10:04Speaker 3: cal Raley physically has to do each and every day.
- 10:07Speaker 3: And I'll put this in perspective for you too. Phrase,
- 10:10Speaker 3: there's not a minute that Aaron Judge shows up to
- 10:12Speaker 3: the ballpark where he's being asked to put his productivity
- 10:17Speaker 3: on the back burner for anybody else on his team.
- 10:20Speaker 3: That is never something that Aaron Judge is being asked
- 10:22Speaker 3: to do. If anything, he's being asked to do more.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Cal Rawley shows up in spring training knowing that his
- 10:28Speaker 3: job is to with kit gloves, handle the starting rotation
- 10:32Speaker 3: and get to know the extension of not only the
- 10:34Speaker 3: big league bullpen, but the tripa a bullpen and starting
- 10:37Speaker 3: rotation as well. That will, without a doubt be a
- 10:39Speaker 3: factor in their pursuit to their first World Series championship
- 10:43Speaker 3: in organization's history. And he will also be the one
- 10:46Speaker 3: who's pressing the PitchCom buttons, who's in the squad for
- 10:49Speaker 3: each and every ball game just about so the demand
- 10:53Speaker 3: physically of the position that is something that I also
- 10:56Speaker 3: factor in as well. And when you have a dude
- 10:58Speaker 3: who is pounding the ball the way that cal rally
- 11:00Speaker 3: is more homers than any switch hitter that the game
- 11:03Speaker 3: has ever seen. He's set in franchise records as well,
- 11:05Speaker 3: all wall steering the pitching staff in the way that
- 11:08Speaker 3: he has. There's a lot of dare I call it
- 11:12Speaker 3: value there, and he might be the most valuable player
- 11:16Speaker 3: when I think about what he brings to the table
- 11:18Speaker 3: on both sides of the ball.
- 11:20Speaker 5: I love to hear it. I gotta be honest, you
- 11:22Speaker 5: kick my butt there. Let me ask you this one question, though,
- 11:24Speaker 5: And I want to see what you're saying. You got
- 11:26Speaker 5: to face this year cal Rally or Aaron Judge fifty times?
- 11:30Speaker 5: Who would you rather face?
- 11:32Speaker 3: I would like to face cal Raleigh fifty times? Please?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Gotcha?
- 11:35Speaker 5: Okay? And how do you think you would fare against
- 11:38Speaker 5: both those guys right now?
- 11:41Speaker 3: Right now? Not great?
- 11:43Speaker 5: In your prime? In your prime?
- 11:45Speaker 3: Sure, I'm probably gonna have a little more success against
- 11:49Speaker 3: a guy like cal Raley just because I feel like
- 11:52Speaker 3: I'm going to have a better opportunity to move the
- 11:54Speaker 3: baseball around on him and beat him to a spot
- 11:57Speaker 3: as opposed to where a guy like Aaron je Should
- 12:00Speaker 3: I even be able to beat him to a spot,
- 12:03Speaker 3: that ball probably gets fought off somewhere. I just think
- 12:05Speaker 3: cal might be a little longer from the right side
- 12:07Speaker 3: and someone that I could maybe crowd a little bit
- 12:10Speaker 3: and just kind of get him in that rocking chair.
- 12:12Speaker 3: That's where I'm gonna have my success against a guy
- 12:15Speaker 3: like him.
- 12:16Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:16Speaker 3: For Judge, that's probably a guy that I I am
- 12:19Speaker 3: going to have to treat like. For me, the count
- 12:23Speaker 3: is three to zero, and I'm trying to get back
- 12:24Speaker 3: into this thing every time, and that is a terrible
- 12:26Speaker 3: way to try to get out.
- 12:29Speaker 4: It feels feels like feels like you're gonna lose on
- 12:31Speaker 4: either one. But I feel good. Good answer there, good
- 12:34Speaker 4: answer that doesn't even argue, doesn't even argue your your
- 12:37Speaker 4: previous point, because Col's more than just the hitter. He's
- 12:40Speaker 4: absolutely what's your favorite what's your favorite postseason moment so
- 12:46Speaker 4: far this year where you're like, man, that was so
- 12:49Speaker 4: cool to watch.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I mean, I I there's no recency bias involved here.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I think it's Yamamoto coming back out for the ninth
- 12:56Speaker 3: inning because the question mark there with the pitch count
- 12:59Speaker 3: and what we were seeing, and this is where the
- 13:04Speaker 3: bias of being a starting pitcher comes into play. And
- 13:06Speaker 3: I want to see these sort of signature moments. I
- 13:09Speaker 3: want to see these hallmark moments for our game's hallmark players.
- 13:13Speaker 3: And this is a guy who just got bredded up
- 13:16Speaker 3: and brought in. And there were question marks even from
- 13:18Speaker 3: some former big leaguers who were going, really signing that
- 13:23Speaker 3: paid check after not he hasn't thrown a pitch here?
- 13:26Speaker 3: Are we sure it's worth it? CG. CS. I think
- 13:31Speaker 3: it's worth it. I think it's worth it, But I
- 13:33Speaker 3: think it also just does a lot more for the
- 13:35Speaker 3: narrative of how strongly I feel about starting pitching and
- 13:38Speaker 3: what it means to our game, not just in the postseason,
- 13:41Speaker 3: but on the whole in its entirety.
- 13:44Speaker 4: All right, now, I remember back to your perfect game.
- 13:48Speaker 4: I still don't know if you did this or not.
- 13:50Speaker 4: It looked like it like you were celebrating. You kind
- 13:53Speaker 4: of like pounded your chest and it looked like you
- 13:55Speaker 4: looked over and you were like my, like, my bad,
- 13:58Speaker 4: Like you didn't want to push it in their face.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Is that true or not true?
- 14:02Speaker 3: One hundred percent true?
- 14:03Speaker 4: Yes, Okay, so that's what I look like. So how
- 14:06Speaker 4: do you feel about teams right now when they finish
- 14:10Speaker 4: a team out dunking on them and hanging on the
- 14:12Speaker 4: rim like some of the teams have so far with
- 14:15Speaker 4: celebrations after the game pointing in their dugout. How do
- 14:19Speaker 4: you feel about that because it feels like it completely
- 14:22Speaker 4: contradicts that moment in history for you and what they're doing.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I have always been a big I've always been
- 14:31Speaker 3: a big proponent of trying to elevate the individuals who
- 14:34Speaker 3: are wearing the same color as I am in a
- 14:36Speaker 3: moment like that, And I think from a competitive standpoint,
- 14:39Speaker 3: it's because we've all been on the other end of that, right,
- 14:42Speaker 3: And I think in that moment, the line has been drawn,
- 14:46Speaker 3: the hay is in the barn, this dance is done,
- 14:48Speaker 3: and why would I want to spend any more time
- 14:52Speaker 3: bearing the people or the individual that I just buried,
- 14:56Speaker 3: Like the dirt's on the coffin, that's a done deal.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Like why don't we celebrate? Why don't you know what
- 15:00Speaker 3: I mean? Why don't we enjoy this over here? And
- 15:02Speaker 3: so yeah, I've always like when it comes to Pimp
- 15:05Speaker 3: and the homer, like, my whole thing has always been
- 15:07Speaker 3: you want to make eye contact with me? Well, you
- 15:09Speaker 3: have now made it personal. You have now signed your
- 15:12Speaker 3: name on the dotted line. And at whatever moment that
- 15:15Speaker 3: contract gets called, we'll figure that out later. But you
- 15:18Speaker 3: have signed your name on the dotted line. If you're
- 15:20Speaker 3: not making eye contact and this isn't personal and you're
- 15:23Speaker 3: just pumped, and bro, I'm not so egotistical to not
- 15:26Speaker 3: understand how excited you are in the moment, But you
- 15:29Speaker 3: haven't made this personal for me, So I would then
- 15:32Speaker 3: have to be feeling some sort of way individually, and
- 15:36Speaker 3: I just I don't carry that with me. So when
- 15:39Speaker 3: I see individuals bring in the opponent, like you know,
- 15:43Speaker 3: during the aftermath, and they start to make it about
- 15:46Speaker 3: the I'm just I don't know. I don't know if
- 15:48Speaker 3: it's the era that I grew up in the game.
- 15:50Speaker 3: I don't know if it's the neighborhood that I grew
- 15:52Speaker 3: up in. But those are just lessons that I learned
- 15:53Speaker 3: very early, Like they're You're going to have to pay
- 15:56Speaker 3: that back at some point in time or another. And
- 15:58Speaker 3: maybe that's just because our game no longer allows that,
- 16:01Speaker 3: you know, you no longer get to hold people accountable
- 16:04Speaker 3: for things like that. And I think something else that
- 16:07Speaker 3: we have to remind ourselves of is each and every year,
- 16:10Speaker 3: we're getting closer and closer to what we have referred
- 16:14Speaker 3: to as the travel Ball era, continuing to I don't
- 16:18Speaker 3: want to say infiltrate because it sounds like they're not welcome,
- 16:21Speaker 3: but I think continuing to populate our game at its
- 16:25Speaker 3: highest and most competitive levels. And what we saw unfold
- 16:30Speaker 3: on social media ten fifteen years ago when it came
- 16:33Speaker 3: to celebrating and bat flipping in Literally, why would you
- 16:39Speaker 3: think that that would stop? Now?
- 16:42Speaker 5: Yeah, totally, it's not gonna.
- 16:46Speaker 2: No, it's going to keep going.
- 16:49Speaker 3: We're only getting closer to that line. Boys, we're only
- 16:51Speaker 3: getting right, like all all the old heads, we're dying.
- 16:55Speaker 3: We're dying off, meaning we're hanging up the uniform and
- 16:58Speaker 3: we're not on the diamond anymore. And how we look
- 17:00Speaker 3: at it and how we played it. Frankly, nobody cares.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Nobody wants to hear about it anymore, Right, even the
- 17:06Speaker 3: guys that are in those dugouts and in those clubhouses.
- 17:09Speaker 3: I always go back to to Big Poppy being very
- 17:13Speaker 3: public and open about feeling like he wasn't even welcomed
- 17:16Speaker 3: or didn't like nobody even wanted to hear what he
- 17:19Speaker 3: had to say in the spring training complex, Like what what.
- 17:25Speaker 5: Outside of the game. Yeah, and you say it like Kratzy.
- 17:28Speaker 5: He coaches high school. I coach travel ball for younger kids,
- 17:31Speaker 5: and it drives me crazy seeing some of the antics
- 17:35Speaker 5: that they do. I tell my kids, you do something
- 17:38Speaker 5: like that, you're sitting at least one or two innings
- 17:40Speaker 5: like I can't. I just can't deal with it. And
- 17:42Speaker 5: it doesn't even matter because eventually, when somebody else coaches them,
- 17:44Speaker 5: they're gonna do whatever the heck they want anyway.
- 17:46Speaker 3: But but no, no, let me try. I have to.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I have to. I have to try. And brother, you
- 17:52Speaker 3: don't need this encouragement from me. My dude, you're back.
- 17:55Speaker 3: The back of your baseball card looks very different than mine.
- 17:58Speaker 3: But I would just say, continue to do what you do, man, Continue,
- 18:03Speaker 3: continue to try to implement and instill the respect for
- 18:07Speaker 3: the game, because it's the respect for the game that
- 18:09Speaker 3: translates into respect for your teammates and respect for your opponents.
- 18:13Speaker 3: And what they hopefully eventually find out is that's what
- 18:16Speaker 3: you're playing this game for at the very end of it.
- 18:17Speaker 3: All right, somebody called it a shiny piece of metal
- 18:20Speaker 3: one time, and that would be fun to have to
- 18:23Speaker 3: But the respect of your opponents, the respect of your teammates,
- 18:26Speaker 3: the respect of the people watching the game, I think
- 18:29Speaker 3: that's pretty important as well. And anytime I can learn
- 18:31Speaker 3: those lessons from a big leaguer like Todd Frasier, I'd
- 18:34Speaker 3: like to think that I'm gonna shut my mouth and
- 18:36Speaker 3: open my ears and maybe learn that lesson.
- 18:39Speaker 2: You'd be amazed. The kids are, like, who are you
- 18:43Speaker 2: the parents seven? I didn't watch you play exactly well, Dallas,
- 18:49Speaker 2: good stuff, dude, always great to catch up. We really
- 18:51Speaker 2: enjoy these. Thanks for swinging by man. Enjoy the rest
- 18:54Speaker 2: of the postseason anytime.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Enjoy October boys, great to chat. We'll catch up soon.

- 20:03Speaker 2: Is in the weeds.
- 20:06Speaker 1: There's more to the Mike Shilt story. Kevin Acey broke
- 20:10Speaker 1: the news initially that Shilt was retiring from his position
- 20:14Speaker 1: as manager of the Padres, and he came out with
- 20:16Speaker 1: a long article in the San Diego Union Tribune about
- 20:20Speaker 1: more details. It sounds like on Shilt's side, he was
- 20:24Speaker 1: tired of dealing with the demands of the job and
- 20:28Speaker 1: that there were issues behind the scenes. There were complaints
- 20:32Speaker 1: from people that you know, he was working too hard.
- 20:34Speaker 1: He was I don't want to say yelling. I got
- 20:37Speaker 1: to find out the specifics in there, but you know,
- 20:39Speaker 1: disagreeing strongly and kind of telling people off. And there
- 20:43Speaker 1: was a lot going on behind the scenes. And he
- 20:45Speaker 1: was asked about that and said he knew about some
- 20:47Speaker 1: of that, but he was surprised that so many people
- 20:49Speaker 1: were frustrated because in this article a number of people
- 20:54Speaker 1: went on the record. I mean, I'm assuming almost all,
- 20:57Speaker 1: if not most, of them, were anonymous, but they're nearly
- 20:59Speaker 1: twenty sources, twelve of them who worked with Shilt on
- 21:02Speaker 1: a daily basis during the season, having recent months characterized
- 21:05Speaker 1: him as unyieldingly demanding of his coaching staff and the
- 21:09Speaker 1: team support staff and is having a tendency to micromanage
- 21:12Speaker 1: and possessing a quick temper that is easily triggered by
- 21:15Speaker 1: questioning or feedback.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Kratz your thoughts. I mean, you played for a long time.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Did you see that?
- 21:21Speaker 1: Do you think this is disgruntled employee action or do
- 21:24Speaker 1: you think that this is legit?
- 21:27Speaker 4: I never saw it be successful. I never saw a
- 21:30Speaker 4: manager when I saw managers like that, or people in
- 21:35Speaker 4: high up roles like a manager would be that would
- 21:38Speaker 4: treat people like that, would treat support staff like these
- 21:42Speaker 4: people are saying in this article. They were being treated.
- 21:45Speaker 4: It's never been successful. But what did the padres do?
- 21:48Speaker 4: They were successful? I don't think the team was. I
- 21:53Speaker 4: have a hard time believing that Shilt was doing this
- 21:56Speaker 4: to the team, to the players, but maybe the support staff.
- 22:02Speaker 4: Maybe the guys that you know, guys and girls that
- 22:05Speaker 4: work to help make the team run, training staff, clubhouse guys,
- 22:11Speaker 4: you know, coaches, first base, bench, go all that stuff.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Those are as much of a team as the players are.
- 22:19Speaker 4: They never ever will taken at bat or throw a pitch.
- 22:23Speaker 4: But if they're not being heard, if they're not being
- 22:28Speaker 4: respected in all those situations, it's hard for a team
- 22:31Speaker 4: to have success. But they had success. We're not talking
- 22:35Speaker 4: about a team that lost a lot of games here.
- 22:37Speaker 4: We're talking about a team that really was kind of
- 22:41Speaker 4: built for this and did pretty well during the season.
- 22:44Speaker 4: They had their ups and downs, but they had success.
- 22:48Speaker 4: So I've never seen it without success. I've seen it
- 22:51Speaker 4: when there's so much divide and the team stinks because
- 22:54Speaker 4: it's like, ugh, we're fighting on the field, and we're
- 22:57Speaker 4: fighting in the clubhouse, or we're fighting out side of
- 23:00Speaker 4: the outside of the things that happened in the club
- 23:03Speaker 4: on the field.
- 23:04Speaker 1: And the column does say that he was great with
- 23:06Speaker 1: the players. They were very supportive of him. The team
- 23:09Speaker 1: was definitely going to have him back, so he was
- 23:11Speaker 1: the one who made the call and turned down some
- 23:13Speaker 1: pretty decent money on the rest of the contract to
- 23:15Speaker 1: do this.
- 23:16Speaker 2: All of those details are in there. I'm with Crats
- 23:20Speaker 2: on this one. I mean I need like really specific,
- 23:22Speaker 2: like in this story.
- 23:23Speaker 1: You get not enough, Like Okay, you talk to people
- 23:28Speaker 1: within the team, tell me what they said, give me
- 23:30Speaker 1: a specific example, and I want that in the article
- 23:32Speaker 1: right Like, hey, I said, you know, I gave him
- 23:36Speaker 1: one little suggestion and he screened with me for five
- 23:38Speaker 1: minutes and told me I'm going to get fired tomorrow
- 23:40Speaker 1: and then didn't. It was threading, like I don't see
- 23:42Speaker 1: anything like that that could have existed. But you talk
- 23:45Speaker 1: to players, they love him. He had success, So I
- 23:48Speaker 1: have a hard time with this. And if you don't
- 23:51Speaker 1: like that, he has you go in two hours earlier
- 23:54Speaker 1: than any team has ever had you go in. Okay,
- 23:56Speaker 1: that's a rightful claim, But guess what. That's how he's
- 23:59Speaker 1: running his operation and you don't have.
- 24:00Speaker 2: To be there.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Everybody has bosses they don't agree with, or many people do,
- 24:04Speaker 1: and then you can leave.
- 24:05Speaker 5: I agree. I'm looking at some of the words here.
- 24:07Speaker 5: He was intense. You want a manager who's intense. He's demanding. Yeah,
- 24:12Speaker 5: if I'm a manager, I'm going to be very demanding
- 24:14Speaker 5: of people that I work with, People that are players
- 24:18Speaker 5: staph micromanaging. Okay, yeah, maybe a little bit here and there.
- 24:22Speaker 5: But players love them because he cared and wanted the
- 24:25Speaker 5: most out of everybody else. And guess what if you
- 24:27Speaker 5: didn't like it, why are you there? Like if you
- 24:30Speaker 5: didn't like the way he did it. As a manager,
- 24:33Speaker 5: I want control. I want control of the choices I make. Yeah,
- 24:36Speaker 5: I'll listen to you. But at the same time, I'm
- 24:38Speaker 5: the one that makes a decision. At the end of
- 24:40Speaker 5: the day. We don't know enough. We don't know enough.
- 24:43Speaker 5: I could sit here and say all that and I
- 24:45Speaker 5: could be far from the truth tomorrow. But if that
- 24:48Speaker 5: is the case, if I'm a manager, I want the
- 24:50Speaker 5: best at everybody. And if it's me trying to control
- 24:53Speaker 5: the narrative, yeah, because I'm the guy, I'm the one
- 24:55Speaker 5: everybody's gonna look at and say he was your fault.
- 24:57Speaker 1: And apparently some of this happened in Saint Louis and
- 25:00Speaker 1: he disagreed with front office and all of that. Right,
- 25:03Speaker 1: it sounded like he was much more on the same
- 25:04Speaker 1: page with Preller. Preller was not on the same page
- 25:06Speaker 1: with Bob Melvin. But for me, I was reading this
- 25:10Speaker 1: expecting stories. Yeah, and I didn't really get anything.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Yeah, he's ten, he works hard in too many hours. Okay,
- 25:18Speaker 2: welcome to baseball. Right. Yes, we could be wrong.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Something could come out after this where it's like, ah,
- 25:23Speaker 1: that's too much, But I'm not there yet.
- 25:25Speaker 2: I'm not seeing it.
- 25:26Speaker 1: I'm going to try to talk to a couple of
- 25:28Speaker 1: the Padres players at some point to see if they've
- 25:30Speaker 1: got anything, but for now sounds like he was frustrated
- 25:34Speaker 1: with the frustrations of others and he was just like enough,
- 25:36Speaker 1: you know, I'm done.
- 25:37Speaker 2: This is wearing me down.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And there was a lot of talking that about him
- 25:40Speaker 1: being burnt out and voicing that to Aj Preller. That's
- 25:43Speaker 1: why Preller said he was surprised, not shocked, because they
- 25:46Speaker 1: had conversations about him just saying like, this is wearing
- 25:49Speaker 1: me down. And he'd been doing it for what five
- 25:52Speaker 1: or six years between the Padres and the Cardinals, with
- 25:55Speaker 1: just a brief in between.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Last word, But.
- 25:59Speaker 4: If the story line up from the Cardinals and they
- 26:02Speaker 4: line up with the Padres now all of a sudden, yes,
- 26:06Speaker 4: I would like specific examples. I've heard some specific examples
- 26:10Speaker 4: from his time with the Cardinals. But let's see if
- 26:14Speaker 4: some of those stories line up, and maybe it's something
- 26:17Speaker 4: in his next job as a manager. Hey, you know what,
- 26:19Speaker 4: I can work on this. My people's skills with people
- 26:22Speaker 4: who are not players are not my GM might stink
- 26:27Speaker 4: and maybe I need to work on it. Or he's like,
- 26:30Speaker 4: screw that. I know this makes a good team. You
- 26:32Speaker 4: either get on board or you get off of the
- 26:35Speaker 4: next stop.
- 26:37Speaker 1: We love Ariakratz in a good underwear commercial. You know
- 26:39Speaker 1: who would love to be in an underwear commercial. Austin Hedges.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Yea four million bucks plus five hundred k incentives back
- 26:47Speaker 1: to the Guardians on another one year contract. They get
- 26:49Speaker 1: it done before the season even ends. The postseason that is.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I thought that was against the rules.
- 26:54Speaker 5: I thought you had to wait.
- 26:55Speaker 1: If you're already with the team, I think you can
- 26:57Speaker 1: do that. Free agency doesn't begin until Wow, I know that, right, Kratz.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Yeah, he's not a free agent. He's not a free
- 27:04Speaker 4: agent yet, so it's just basically like atension, but he
- 27:09Speaker 4: just decided not to hit free agency. Four million dude.
- 27:12Speaker 4: I love when teams lock up with players in a
- 27:15Speaker 4: great spot to be in, Like he's one of the
- 27:17Speaker 4: leaders and nobody wants to see that shoot up piece
- 27:20Speaker 4: of bubblegum body and underwear commercial for sure.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Not yeah, but it would go viral just based on
- 27:27Speaker 1: who he is and his personality and the BOD.
- 27:30Speaker 5: When talking to Stephen Bode about him, he said, I
- 27:33Speaker 5: asked him like talking about the club as Hedge is
- 27:35Speaker 5: our leader. Yeah, he does. Everybody listens to him. He's
- 27:39Speaker 5: our guy, he says. Ramiroz is there. Don't get me wrong,
- 27:41Speaker 5: but that's their fearless leader. Great call, great call by them.
- 27:45Speaker 1: We have one minute left, and I did look up
- 27:47Speaker 1: the thing we were talking about at the beginning.
- 27:48Speaker 2: There's always a million things going on.
- 27:49Speaker 1: At the top of the show, Kratz was challenging history
- 27:51Speaker 1: and Kratz in twenty nineteen in the World Series, that's
- 27:54Speaker 1: what you were talking about. The Astros were home, they
- 27:56Speaker 1: lost the first two games. They went on the road,
- 27:58Speaker 1: they won three, four and five. But this trivia question
- 28:01Speaker 1: was about losing the first two games at home and
- 28:03Speaker 1: then winning the series. The Astros lost those last two
- 28:06Speaker 1: games back at home. It's FT presented by Fox Won
- 28:13Speaker 1: two minutes here to talk about the Rockies search for
- 28:17Speaker 1: a new front office leader. I'm proud of Colorado for
- 28:20Speaker 1: looking outside the organization.
- 28:23Speaker 2: James Click is in the running. Click won a.
- 28:26Speaker 1: World Series as a front office leader with the Astros.
- 28:30Speaker 1: That's right, That's that's good, and that's what Jim Crane
- 28:33Speaker 1: said to him after they won the World Series. He said,
- 28:35Speaker 1: you got a one year deal because I technically don't
- 28:37Speaker 1: want you to come back and I just have.
- 28:38Speaker 2: To do this.
- 28:39Speaker 1: So Click said, see you guess who he works for
- 28:41Speaker 1: now the Blue Jays. It's work, and he's an advisor
- 28:45Speaker 1: for Ross Atkins, so I think he would be great
- 28:48Speaker 1: for a job like this. Others in the running include
- 28:50Speaker 1: Scott Sharp, who's an assistant GM with the Royals, and
- 28:54Speaker 1: Cleveland Guardians assistant GM Matt Forman. Both of them have
- 28:56Speaker 1: been in the game for a while. I don't know
- 28:58Speaker 1: as much about them as I do about Click click
- 29:00Speaker 1: heard back click. I think that he will be a
- 29:02Speaker 1: front office leader again soon for Meatkrats.
- 29:04Speaker 2: This could be a good fit.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Scott Sharp's a good one. He's a good one with
- 29:09Speaker 4: the Royals. I think I think he aligns with kind
- 29:12Speaker 4: of what the Rockies are looking for, you know, people first,
- 29:14Speaker 4: type of people. But whoever comes in here, whoever's coming
- 29:17Speaker 4: in from another organization, they're going to go in, like
- 29:22Speaker 4: James Click is going to go in. From what I've
- 29:23Speaker 4: heard about the Rockies, and they're like how far behind
- 29:26Speaker 4: the time they are? Some things he might be like, wait, what,
- 29:30Speaker 4: you guys don't do this. You guys don't have counter
- 29:33Speaker 4: reports for the players, but how do you what? Oh man,
- 29:37Speaker 4: there's a lot of low hanging fruit here. So I hope,
- 29:40Speaker 4: I hope one of these guys gets this job, and
- 29:41Speaker 4: I hope he can help turn around that organization because
- 29:44Speaker 4: they have a great fan base there.
- 29:46Speaker 1: To me, that's why click out of that group as
- 29:49Speaker 1: a front runner, even though I don't know the other
- 29:50Speaker 1: two as well, because I think you need someone that was,
- 29:52Speaker 1: like I've been in the seat, I won a title.
- 29:54Speaker 1: I'm also coming from another team that was one of
- 29:57Speaker 1: the last left. And here's what you need to do.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I'm not asking you, I'm telling you. This is why
- 30:03Speaker 1: we need to do this to change what's been going
- 30:05Speaker 1: on process wise with Colorado.
- 30:08Speaker 2: So I could see that happening.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Plus, I do like Clicks, background krats some teams that
- 30:13Speaker 1: are pretty front in front of the game in terms
- 30:17Speaker 1: of tech. Houston, he was in Tampa Bay for a while.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I think you need somebody that's going to think outside
- 30:22Speaker 1: the box, and Colorado should be a lab where you're like,
- 30:28Speaker 1: we have to catch up and then some we have
- 30:30Speaker 1: to do things very differently.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Here.
- 30:32Speaker 1: It's incredibly difficult to have a consistent winner based on
- 30:35Speaker 1: the atmosphere. In the most obvious news of the offseason,
- 30:40Speaker 1: Alex Bragman is planning to opt out after a nice
- 30:43Speaker 1: first year in Boston. This, according to John Hammond said
- 30:46Speaker 1: Red Sox return seems logical, but there will surely be options.
- 30:49Speaker 1: And if you want to check out his article, he's
- 30:52Speaker 1: got a surprise suitor in there. There are going to
- 30:54Speaker 1: be teams going after him. I know one team that
- 30:56Speaker 1: won't go after him, the Tigers, because they're pissed. They
- 31:01Speaker 1: took it personally that he said, no, I don't think
- 31:03Speaker 1: they're going to go after him again.
- 31:04Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I think he'd be a great fit Thereocrats, but I
- 31:07Speaker 1: think they were really bothered about the situation because they
- 31:11Speaker 1: offered the most guarantee money.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Get over it. If you still think he's a good player,
- 31:16Speaker 4: you were about to get six or seven years out.
- 31:18Speaker 5: Of him, try again, Try again.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Yeah, well all of a sudden, Oh your feelings are hurt. Well,
- 31:24Speaker 4: he could have helped you. So I don't know that
- 31:27Speaker 4: I I don't know that I agree with it. But
- 31:30Speaker 4: there's other suitors. Of course, there's other suitors. And also,
- 31:34Speaker 4: like he's a free agent, help them help him go
- 31:37Speaker 4: and enjoy his time. He shouldn't be talking to other
- 31:39Speaker 4: teams yet. He hasn't opted out yet. Let's let's follow
- 31:42Speaker 4: the rules and I want to see what Boris does
- 31:45Speaker 4: for him. Boris, the second year of these types of
- 31:48Speaker 4: contracts where they don't get what they want the first year,
