- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Friday.
- 0:16It's the 18th of July, and I am so glad to have your company as
- 0:22at the end of the week we get to dip our toe into some ancient
- 0:26wisdom. That's right, we're going to
- 0:27read through some more proverbs today.
- 0:30Proverbs are good for us, all of us, young and old.
- 0:33In fact, I wonder what the age range of everyone listening
- 0:37right now might be. I know for sure that some of you
- 0:40are families who listen together, so that means kids.
- 0:43You might be young and listening right now, which is so cool.
- 0:47I wonder how young you are. If you're very young, you should
- 0:50reach out and let me know how old you are.
- 0:52And if you are on the other end of the spectrum, well, it would
- 0:55be very improper of me to ask your age.
- 0:58But again, I wonder what our oldest listener is.
- 1:01You could even reach out if you if you suspect that's you and
- 1:05all the rest of us in between. We are all able to come down,
- 1:09sit on the stool in front of the feet of that wise king, and hear
- 1:14some of God's wisdom delivered to us today.
- 1:18And just in case we missed it the first time, I'll read it
- 1:21through twice. You ready?
- 1:22Oh, yeah, I am too. Let's get smarter, everyone.
- 1:26Let us read together. Proverbs, 1425 to 30.
- 1:41A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is a
- 1:46traitor. Those who fear the Lord are
- 1:51secure. He will be a refuge for their
- 1:54children. Fear of the Lord is a life
- 1:58giving fountain. It offers escape from the snares
- 2:02of death. A growing population is a King's
- 2:07glory. A Prince without subjects has
- 2:10nothing. People with understanding
- 2:15control their anger. A hot temper shows great
- 2:20foolishness. A peaceful heart leads to a
- 2:26healthy body. Jealousy is like cancer in the
- 2:29bones. And again, a truthful witness
- 2:36saves lives, but a false witness is a traitor.
- 2:41Those who fear the Lord are secure.
- 2:44He will be a refuge for their children.
- 2:49Fear of the Lord is a life giving fountain.
- 2:52It offers escape from the snares of death.
- 2:56A growing population is a King's glory.
- 3:00A Prince without subjects has nothing.
- 3:04People with understanding control their anger.
- 3:07A hot temper shows great foolishness.
- 3:12A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body.
- 3:16Jealousy is like a cancer in the bones.
- 3:29Our Father, there is so much in Your word for us today, so much
- 3:36to encourage us to have peaceful hearts and not jealous hearts,
- 3:40to control our anger and not give in to a temper that shows
- 3:44foolishness. But Lord, here in this proverb
- 3:49you speak about, the fear of you is a refuge for our children.
- 3:57This thought that if we fear you and if we live following You,
- 4:01Lord, then You don't just protect us, but You are a refuge
- 4:05for our children. You go beyond what we would
- 4:08imagine, and you create this provision for us, not just us,
- 4:14but to the next generation as well.
- 4:17Yes, this wise king has noted that those who follow you tend
- 4:22to not just be looked after themselves, but the blessings
- 4:25from you extend well beyond there.
- 4:27And this echoes through into the New Testament as the Spirit is
- 4:32described by Jesus as this small seed that grows into this tree
- 4:38that provides shade, and even the birds can come and nest in
- 4:41that tree. When you bless us, your
- 4:44blessings are rich and extensive beyond our horizons that we
- 4:49could imagine. Thank you for blessing us in
- 4:52these beautiful ways. But mostly, Lord, we just thank
- 4:57you for the blessing of Jesus, who out of the blue, when we
- 5:00don't even deserve it, comes and brings us life and forgiveness
- 5:05and membership in your family. You are good to us, and we thank
- 5:09you for your blessings that you richly, richly shower down on us
- 5:15when we don't even deserve them because you are our loving
- 5:19Father. So we pray all of this in that
- 5:22blessed name of Jesus, Amen.
