- 0:0076% of American literally say they consider a company's
- 0:04commitment to sustainability and ethical practises is really
- 0:08believe it or not. And so it's important that
- 0:10brands are transparent about really their sourcing and their
- 0:13manufacturing practises and and accurately promote the
- 0:17authenticity of that to their customers.
- 0:31Hello and welcome to the Retail Podcast.
- 0:33I had the opportunity to sit down with their CEO, Mr Keith
- 0:37Nealon. Is that right?
- 0:38That's correct, yeah. Thank God, if you ever watch any
- 0:41of these episodes, that's the first little stumble for myself
- 0:44is to make sure I've got the right name, the right person at
- 0:47the right time. So Keith, before, before I sort
- 0:50of dive into some of the questions that I have for you, I
- 0:52was just wondering, would you mind giving us a 5 minute like
- 0:55helicopter view of yourself, how you came to bizarre voice and
- 1:01your, your focus as CEO right now?
- 1:04Sure. Well, if you're a connoisseur of
- 1:08accents like your own, I'm not from the US, I'm originally from
- 1:12Ireland, but I, I moved to the US about 20 years ago.
- 1:15And in that time I've been an executive in many SAS or cloud
- 1:19software companies, all with a passion for helping executive
- 1:23teams and their organisations. Dr business success in different
- 1:27industries, my favourite being in the marketing space, so
- 1:31Bizarre Voice. So again, in many companies five
- 1:34years ago, I joined Bizarre Voice as their CEO and it's been
- 1:39a fantastic ride. And essentially what Bizarre
- 1:42Voice does is we, we help literally over 14,000 brands
- 1:48help about 2 1/2 billion consumers a month, literally
- 1:52discover, research and find their next product purchase.
- 1:56And we, we do that with software and what we call a content
- 1:59supply chain that helps marketers with their their
- 2:02consumers journey from the discovery of their product,
- 2:06which might be on a social platform to the purchase of
- 2:09their product, which might be on a retailer's e-commerce site.
- 2:12And that entire journey in whatever way the consumer wants
- 2:16to travel that journey. And in a, in a chief marketing
- 2:19officers ideal world, their consumers do the talking for
- 2:23them. So because we are leaders in
- 2:26ratings and reviews and user generated content, which is the
- 2:29voice of the customer, we harness that voice of the
- 2:32customer and promote that voice in all of those marketing and
- 2:35content assets across our customers platforms so that they
- 2:40can accelerate their success by literally letting the customer,
- 2:43their customers do the talking for them.
- 2:46That sounds incredible. So you must have an immense
- 2:48access or a wealth of consumer data that probably you're seeing
- 2:53little signals for as it goes through your platform.
- 2:56I'm just wondering in, in the wake of all the changing
- 3:00dynamics and everything that's going on, you know, whether it's
- 3:03cost of living, inflation or what, what are you seeing in
- 3:06terms of how this relates to retail acceleration or how your
- 3:11customers partners can use this data to accelerate or what are
- 3:15the things you're seeing? Yeah, it's, it's true.
- 3:18We have a tonne of consumer data as you'd imagine.
- 3:22And so we leverage our consumers and our community several times
- 3:27a year to not just we gather gait automatically, but we
- 3:31survey them. And we released 2 main reports
- 3:34this year and detailing shifting consumer behaviours under a
- 3:38number of factors. So pandemic recovery was one,
- 3:42macroeconomics was another and just that sort of surge in
- 3:46digital first social shopping. And so the first of those
- 3:49reports was, is called the Shopper Experience Index and
- 3:52it's available on our website where it said about 73% of
- 3:56consumers we surveyed reported adjustments in their spending
- 4:00because of the current economic conditions and thus their quest
- 4:05for value. And so more than 2/3, literally
- 4:0970% said they're open to exploring alternative brands for
- 4:14products that they regularly purchase largely for, you know,
- 4:18value for money. So we saw that 34% actively seek
- 4:22out private label goods from retailers because they offer
- 4:26great value for money and and are increasingly in their view,
- 4:29the consumer view an incredible, a credible alternative
- 4:32alternative to national brands. So that was one thing in our
- 4:35shopper preference report as more workplaces adopt hybrid
- 4:40working models and about 2/3 of US consumers have returned to a
- 4:45physical office for at least part of the work week, Therefore
- 4:48consumers are recalibrating spending habits associated with
- 4:51that, right. So we saw that now 30% of
- 4:55consumers prefer to spend online, 41% favour in store
- 4:59spending and 29% fine online and in store spending to be in terms
- 5:05of their division very soon. But we're seeing a shift more to
- 5:09digital because folks are busier and then Gen Z, you know, just
- 5:13as a demographic what we're noticing with their purchase
- 5:16behaviours, they have the, it's not unique to them, but they
- 5:18have the highest preference for watching online videos about
- 5:22products and online creator content to help purchase
- 5:26decisions. OK, so that, that's interesting.
- 5:29I mean, you, you can laugh at this.
- 5:30I, I remember reading how for UGC, I'm smiling because I don't
- 5:35know if it's embarrassing to admit to or not, but there's a
- 5:38lack of men in my demographic and age group creating UGC
- 5:44content. So I was like, oh, I wonder if
- 5:46that's something to, to get into as well as the podcast and
- 5:49insight. Well, but obviously UGC or user
- 5:53generated content is, is my understanding is core to your
- 5:58arm offering, but it is a minefield and, and I think
- 6:03there's been some great examples of why it's a minefield.
- 6:06But what advice would you have for retailers that help them
- 6:09navigate the UGC minefield to to build trust to to build drive in
- 6:13in growing sales and obviously becoming more competitive online
- 6:17in general? Sure.
- 6:19Yeah. I mean it's not just core as you
- 6:22say UGC or user generated concepts who are offering.
- 6:24It's the very essence of what we do.
- 6:27There's two types. Am I right just to interrupt
- 6:29you? Is that is it?
- 6:30Is it right that there is a lack of men in their in their upper
- 6:36echelons? I like that upper echelons like
- 6:39myself maybe. You should be Crane.
- 6:42You should see Gaza. Inherent like is sort of gut
- 6:46feel. I want to say yes, but one of
- 6:48our products, Vibe has such an amazing AI search engine that if
- 6:53we said, you know, give me Irish and British guys right from,
- 6:57from that part of the world that are in their 50s plus that are
- 7:01experts on fly fishing and, and specifically XYZ fish.
- 7:07You can literally pull out whatever that number is 55 Yeah,
- 7:13yeah. So we have a great engine for
- 7:15navigating that challenging vibe.
- 7:16But to your to your question, really there's two types of
- 7:19content, right? Most marketers are very used to
- 7:21and comfortable with creating brand owned content, right?
- 7:26Using their their teams, their agencies to create brand owned
- 7:29clouds. Very important.
- 7:30It's what does, what is this product?
- 7:32What does it do? User generated content is really
- 7:34the voice of the customer, right?
- 7:36What are consumed in his name. It's far more powerful than
- 7:39brand marketing to the consumer because 85, 4% of consumers are
- 7:44more likely to trust brands, a brand's marketing campaign if it
- 7:49features UGC and 77% are more likely to buy the product they
- 7:54found through UGC. And we see that in our data.
- 7:58So in terms of building trust, which you talked about, you
- 8:01consumers simply trust other consumers more than they trust
- 8:04brands. It's a deeply rooted
- 8:06psychological thing. And so UGC content shows how
- 8:12actual people are using products in real world settings.
- 8:15That creates an authenticity for brands and allows them to
- 8:19promote products without being sort of overly salesy.
- 8:22And you know about it's amazing stat, 85% of consumers say
- 8:26they'll turn to visual UGC rather than branded content when
- 8:31making purchasing decisions. So you see this imbalance where
- 8:34there's more budget for branded content, but the consumer
- 8:37preferences for user generated content.
- 8:39So #1 it really helps drive trust.
- 8:42The second is it drives sales. So when you look at our data
- 8:46from, as I said, 1314 thousand brands, 2 1/2 billion consumers
- 8:51a month, on average, we see 144% lift in conversion rate when
- 8:56shoppers engage with UGC and 162% lift in revenue per
- 9:02visitor. And so for brands, does you
- 9:05really, if they don't already start developing A use UGC
- 9:08marketing strategy that will help them search, curate and
- 9:12publish the most effective voice of customer UGC for their brand?
- 9:17And that's where we can help. So I mentioned Vibe already,
- 9:21right? It's one of our new product
- 9:23launches. It's designed to help marketers
- 9:25source, amplify and optimise everyday shopper and creator
- 9:31content across all channels where a brand may want consumers
- 9:35to discover or purchase their product all from one place.
- 9:39And and as I said earlier, right, given the preference for
- 9:42UGC, as one CMO said recently, you know, the Nirvana is when
- 9:47the consumer can do the talking for you.
- 9:49So as a brand, if you can relinquish control of all that
- 9:52branded content and allow your consumer to do more of the
- 9:55content creation, there's usually far more content from
- 9:59them you can create at scale that drives this trust and
- 10:02sales. And so we help brands achieve
- 10:05that Nirvana of leveraging the voice of customer to do the
- 10:08talking for you. I'm.
- 10:10Just thinking about, you mentioned about AI earlier on in
- 10:13terms of how your product uses AI to sort of navigate the, the,
- 10:17the route to finding the, that, that specific UGC person that's
- 10:22relevant to your brand. I'm just thinking about the role
- 10:25of AI and as a, as a leader, as the CEO of your business.
- 10:29How do you see the role of AI in terms of helping your customers
- 10:33or you as a business leader using AI for your business?
- 10:37I'm just curious if you had any thoughts on that.
- 10:40Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, we've been leveraging AI
- 10:43for years and more recently generative AI, you know,
- 10:47obviously with the the launch of Jenna and Jenna in the last
- 10:50couple of years. So we, we generally though, even
- 10:53though we have our own ideas, we partner closely with our brands
- 10:56to keep a pulse on consumer behaviour that helps inform
- 10:59where are we may take innovations with AI.
- 11:02And so the, you know, we have a a engine within our platform
- 11:06called Harmony AI, which is the broad engine of AI at, but
- 11:10within that there are several components.
- 11:12So for example, content coach is one of those components.
- 11:15And we saw in our research 67% of consumers expressed interest
- 11:21in having e-commerce sites that offer AI powered coaching tools
- 11:26to assist them and leaving high quality product reviews.
- 11:29Think about it, right? Like if you or I bought
- 11:31mayonnaise, Yeah, what do you say about mayonnaise?
- 11:35Right. And, and so for me to say tastes
- 11:38great isn't necessarily a helpful review.
- 11:41So by understanding the voice of customer and what people are
- 11:44saying, we can say, oh, you know, what would be helpful is
- 11:47if you talk about taste, smell, texture, things like that.
- 11:51And therefore it's, you're not telling someone what to write,
- 11:55but you're giving them ideas of themes that might make sense
- 11:58versus for a clothing item, it's fit to size and other things,
- 12:02right colours or whatever. So we use the AI engine to help
- 12:06folks think about what they might want to use in her view to
- 12:09be helpful. Another thing, for example, we
- 12:11have like literally is this about more than 10 billion
- 12:14pieces of UGC and counting. And we leverage all of that data
- 12:18every month as we're, so as we're creating hundreds of
- 12:21millions of pieces of new content, how can we help our
- 12:25brands and therefore their customers do more?
- 12:27So content coach is one example, another is just product
- 12:30matching. So yes, you're, you're talking
- 12:32about a review to do with Hellman's mayonnaise, right?
- 12:36But Hellman's mayonnaise has got to be sold at, you know,
- 12:39hundreds of retailers around the world.
- 12:41So you've got a match that that Hellman's, you know, 50 oz jar,
- 12:46these the same 50 oz jar at Walgreens, at Target, etcetera,
- 12:50etcetera, etcetera on the world at Sainsbury's etcetera.
- 12:53So sometimes the matching of those what we call G10 numbers
- 12:57is out of sync between brands and retailers.
- 13:00So we are able to use AI by looking at what the product is,
- 13:03the image and everything to do better product matching.
- 13:05So there's no orphaning of products and thus that those
- 13:09reviews get matched to the right product and they get out to the
- 13:12right it retailers as fast as possible.
- 13:14We also use AI, for example, if you're if you're going to be a
- 13:18shopper like that's posting about, you know, really cool,
- 13:22cool pair of jeans, let's say they're Levi's jeans.
- 13:25Our AI can can actually tell if your your images and you posted
- 13:30in tag Levi's is on brand for what style Levi's likes likes.
- 13:34So we'll surface that into our bizarre voice vibe platform for
- 13:38the Levi's team to leverage and say this is a really cool UGC
- 13:43image that we could leverage for product discovery or product
- 13:45purchase. The other thing there's many of
- 13:47these things we do is if you think about like you could have
- 13:51hundreds of thousands of the customers writing reviews about
- 13:53your products. If you're a large enough
- 13:55business, you can't read all those reviews.
- 13:57So we use AI for sentiment analysis.
- 14:00So we'll tell you what are the top positive things that a
- 14:04consumers are saying at scale about your product and what are
- 14:07the top challenging or negative things.
- 14:10And you might want to say, OK, for the top positive things we
- 14:13want might want to turn or leverage the consumers voice in
- 14:18our marketing, right. So for example, we saw consumers
- 14:21in the camera space talking about rugged cameras and one of
- 14:25our clients didn't ever use the term rugged.
- 14:27So they start rewriting their their brand content with the
- 14:30term rugged. And between our content and
- 14:33theirs they did better for SEO ranking in Google for rugged
- 14:36cameras. You have found that that drove
- 14:38sales for the negative comments or challenging it might be about
- 14:42the product. You can feed those to your R&D
- 14:44organisation to produce and next Rev 2 right of that product and
- 14:49it stimulates product and innovation.
- 14:51And then we do a lot of things around workflow to help our
- 14:54brands be more efficient by automatically suggesting
- 14:57captions for new products and photos based on The Voice of the
- 15:01customer, intelligently offering answers to consumer questions
- 15:05based on the database of previously compiled answers to
- 15:08similar questions, all in ways to just help our clients become
- 15:12more effective. So a whole range of things, a
- 15:15range of things under that that Harmony AI engine umbrella.
- 15:19Well, I, I've got to be honest, I wasn't expecting that in terms
- 15:23of, and I'm hoping this is, I've got the right term.
- 15:26It's like social listening on steroids, right?
- 15:29You, you, you are absolutely bringing that invisible
- 15:32narrative that's going to allow me to execute faster and, and
- 15:36more effectively with my dollars that I'm spending to make sure
- 15:39that I'm getting a return on that.
- 15:41I've got 2 questions that I'd like to ask you.
- 15:44And because of time, I'll let let you decide which one you
- 15:47answer or if you want to answer both of them.
- 15:48I just want to be respectful to your time.
- 15:51The first one is about sustainability and ethical
- 15:54consumerism. I don't know how much of A Gen
- 15:57Z, Gen X thing that is or it's a societal thing, but I'll be
- 16:00curious in your opinion. And the thing that I'd really
- 16:03like to know is about the future of where you see the industry of
- 16:08this marketplace, where it's going.
- 16:10So they're the two questions. OK, she's true.
- 16:12Let me start with the sustainability question.
- 16:16I, I think, I mean, everybody cares more now than ever before.
- 16:2076% of American literally say they consider a company's
- 16:24commitment to sustainability and ethical practises is really
- 16:28believe it or not. And so it's important that
- 16:30brands are transparent about really their sourcing and their
- 16:33manufacturing practises and, and accurately promote the
- 16:37authenticity of that to their customers.
- 16:39So how can we help like ratings and reviews actually help reduce
- 16:44return rates, for example, which is incredibly unsustainable,
- 16:48right? Because you're making, you're
- 16:49helping a shopper make a more confident and informed purchase
- 16:53in the 1st place. Through sentiment analysis,
- 16:55which I mentioned, we could pick up any thoughts consumers offer
- 16:59you on sustainability and suggest those either for your
- 17:03marketing or for product improvement.
- 17:05And through Content Coach, as I mentioned, we can help consumers
- 17:09write reviews where we nudge the consumer to talk if it's
- 17:12important and relevant about sustainability practises, not in
- 17:16terms of what to say, but just that that might be a category of
- 17:20what they will offer in the review.
- 17:22Maybe, you know, talking about, say, biodegradable packaging or
- 17:26something like that. So, So definitely important,
- 17:29probably more important. Yeah, we're seeing in Gen Z, but
- 17:32really important to the majority of say, folks in the US where we
- 17:36not just going to surprise me the world terms of the future of
- 17:39the industry. I mean, you know, you'll see
- 17:42shopping for our customers is becoming more complicated,
- 17:45right? It used used to be you went to
- 17:47Google, you search for a product, you went to the
- 17:49retailer's website or the brand's website and you made a
- 17:52purchase. Now there are more and more
- 17:55places to discover products from social media platforms to
- 17:59commerce clouds to your brand side to the retailer side, to
- 18:03new technology marketplaces, not just like say Walmart's
- 18:08marketplace, but like DoorDash, for example, sells products now
- 18:12doesn't just deliver food. So the amount of places where
- 18:15you have people discovering and buying your product is vastly
- 18:19more diversified and complicated and marketers have to try and
- 18:22manage all of that and and it will increase.
- 18:25But in order to succeed, you have to be where prop where
- 18:28consumers are aggregating and and looking to discover
- 18:32products. So we see that and we're really,
- 18:34really building a platform for the future where the puck is
- 18:37going, which is a more social shopping world.
- 18:41I love it Keith, this is actually been a really for me, a
- 18:44fascinating and eye opening interview into the world of UGC
- 18:48and how you know you can actually do social listening
- 18:51almost to find that needle in a haystack, which is very
- 18:55difficult to do. Thank you so much for giving up
- 18:57your time and being with us today.
- 18:59It's been a great pleasure, Alex.
- 19:00Thanks so much.
