- 2:08You know sweetheart one day you should settle down and marry a rich man
- 2:12My mom I am a rich man come and talk and learn and laugh with us because together. We really can raise the curve
- 2:21I know that this is very
- 2:23Resumest and of me. Do you remember resumest?
- 2:27So when I used to work and
- 2:30I love when you do that face you know when I used to work in radio you would meet actual celebrities
- 2:36And then you would meet one of these celebrities and I will never forget the day that Reese master
- 2:41He won like Australian Idol or something turned up for an interview
- 2:46Thinking he was God's gift to the world wearing sunglasses inside
- 2:49He had like aviators on during the interview
- 2:53You feel like him and I feel like him right now and wearing sunglasses while recording this podcast
- 2:58That must be the cringes thing. It was so embarrassing. I mean, it's like stop trying to be someone
- 3:03More famous than you are because you're not
- 3:07I'm actually who the hell is even resumest. He does like real punk rock to hear a more lovely
- 3:14Anyway, the point of today's episode is to talk about our wardrobes as investments
- 3:18Hmm, and I just happen to find Victoria's
- 3:21Very stunning sunglasses next to me. So I've just put them on for getting into character. Yeah, do you feel good?
- 3:28I do I feel expensive. I feel
- 3:32Shake I feel hot. I feel all the things. I do I felt like that when I put something
- 3:37I got so you look like that. I think I think I think that this is something that we haven't talked about a lot in terms of fashion
- 3:45clothes, investing and things we get asked all the time where stuff we wear is from and it's sometimes
- 3:52I don't know how to respond because a lot of the things that I buy actually are secondhand. Yeah, and
- 3:57Some what we've said. No, I just even just like the topic of this podcast is making me feel a bit funny really
- 4:03It's just like why do we feel guilty or uncomfortable?
- 4:08Spending money or talking about how much things cost or you know, like I'm instantly like
- 4:16It's it's this wait, but I but I have to wear clothing. I can't walk around naked
- 4:21But it also comes down to I think you're and this is something that I mean
- 4:25I'm still kind of trying to figure out but in terms of when you feel good spending money when you feel bad spending money
- 4:31Some people will spend money on clothes, bags, sunglasses and feel really great about it
- 4:37Yeah, some people will feel horrendous and embarrassed and not want to talk about it
- 4:42And the fact that you're even feeling a bit cringey is probably a big sign. You need to look at I know
- 4:48Sorry to be all welcome to my office. It's almost like you know
- 4:52It's like you know you're about to be told off or something. No, because if that's how you want to spend your money
- 4:57I'm like go for it. Yeah, if you feel a little bit guilty. It's not a great feeling. No, I think it's when you know you can do better
- 5:03That's the kind of energy I'm feeling right now
- 5:07Okay, what is making you feel like that when you spend money on clothes?
- 5:11I just literally this is quite timely this episode because in the last couple of weeks, I've been like
- 5:17You have so many clothes you don't wear
- 5:19That they've almost become new again because you haven't worn them for so long like that dress
- 5:24And so I was like oh love it
- 5:27Where's that from and I was like the back of the wardrobe literally, but I just haven't
- 5:31It's a bit to iron
- 5:32So I just haven't really got around to ironing it and wearing it
- 5:34But yeah, I did feel like I had a new dress on and that's the feeling I want whether it's a new piece of clothing or not
- 5:41You know what I mean? So yeah, no, and I think that you get that feeling whether something's
- 5:45Brand new whether it was five dollars five hundred dollars that you the feeling of having something new is really exciting
- 5:51I'm different like someone might
- 5:53Save up and spend a lot of money on a designer handbag and that's amazing for them
- 5:58Or get a bonus from work and splash out on a new coat or something like that because it's like a sense of achievement
- 6:03And you do you you know that that's great other people might
- 6:07Want to put that money aside for something else another goal of a financial goal that they're saving for
- 6:12Which is which is great as well. It's like who are you to judge as long as we are
- 6:17Making sure we are still spending within our means
- 6:21Saving for our 20-year holiday all of that and stop judging people really
- 6:27Yeah, you even know what other people are spending money on or
- 6:30What expenses they've got what they're in commas
- 6:32so you are
- 6:34Saving towards your short-term long-term goals you are on track to be retiring with you know the decent amount
- 6:41Why do you feel guilty when talking about this or buying clothes because I could be doing better
- 6:47But that's just me and you know but see that's quite interesting in itself isn't it because I think the problem is is that
- 6:53If we're always feeling like that then are you even enjoying what you're spending money on like are you actually because
- 7:00I don't know I think sometimes we can be our own worst enemy if it comes to like constantly feeling like you're not doing good enough
- 7:06Like you're so good with your money
- 7:08If of every single person I know if you want to go and spend money on new sunglasses a bag shows
- 7:14I would never be like that was a responsible. So why do you feel like that? I don't know
- 7:18It's so funny though when you're like is that a new dress? I'm like no, no, I know I was wonder why
- 7:23It's so funny. I think it's my mum used to do it. She'd be like oh new bag. I'm like no
- 7:27I just borrowed it from a friend like it's like this weird
- 7:31Reaction to like I don't know it's crazy because I've got bills to pay so it's like why should I be spending money on clothes?
- 7:38You always celebrate me if I bought something new because you don't buy stuff. So when you do it's like
- 7:44Yeah, welcome to my world
- 7:46I don't know I guess like when I spend money on clothes or shoes or things like that
- 7:51I don't know
- 7:53Where it comes from but I feel that's the main place where like a feeling of lack comes up for me
- 7:59When spending money on organic food and plan of organic or whatever I can do that no problem
- 8:05Most people feel really guilty about spending 12 pounds on an arm and butter
- 8:09But I'm fine with it when it comes to going and spending
- 8:12300 pounds or even 150 pounds on clothing. Yeah, it really gets me feeling uncomfortable and guilty
- 8:20And I I think that's why I think if it's in your budget then it shouldn't
- 8:25I don't know I think it might be a female thing just feeling guilty about
- 8:28spending
- 8:30money on nice things
- 8:31Which we're spoken about before like in terms of why is it that we can't openly say we want nice things or we want to drive nice cars
- 8:38We want to go on nice holidays. I mean like you're buying it for yourself. You're not being like
- 8:43Pay for my thing, you know what I mean though
- 8:45It's like there's no element of like asking other people to pay for things. No
- 8:49It's your own hard-earned money. I feel guilty spending money on anything really like even
- 8:53Even going to the groceries. I'm like oh
- 8:56But I have to eat. Did you always feel like that or has it been on a lower salary that you feel like that?
- 9:00I think it's because I have a lot more financial obligations now
- 9:03Whereas back when I was younger didn't matter if I splurged on fashion
- 9:09Because I didn't have a mortgage or I didn't have a pet or I didn't have you know
- 9:13Like there wasn't other commitments whereas now it's like oh god
- 9:16Do you remember how old you were when you first had to start buying your own clothes?
- 9:20How did it work in your house when you were younger? Yeah, I mean the bigging
- 9:23Because I had an older sister and she
- 9:26Had an allowance that when we think it was when we turned 16 we got a monthly allowance to we could now go by
- 9:32Clothes that we wanted without getting permission from mum and dad which was like amazing at the time
- 9:38And I remember begging my parents when I was three years younger than her at the same time to get an allowance
- 9:44So that I could have the freedom to spend what I money on what I want to do. How old would you have been like 13?
- 9:49No, sorry. No, this was she was she was 13 so I would have been like 11
- 9:53Yeah, imagine a little a little live in your old Vic
- 9:56Yeah, and then I did the paper round so that I could have my own money
- 9:59Like I was like very like I don't want mum and dad to be telling me where I can and can't spend money
- 10:04so
- 10:05I want to have my own allowance
- 10:07It was for things like the movies and stuff as well
- 10:09You know like I just wanted that freedom and so yeah, I remember that I remember hbk
- 10:14Yeah, it was like owned by Helen signs glasses, I think
- 10:17Way back in the day and I had his petal pushes and I fucking loved them pedal pushes pedal pushes like
- 10:23three quarter length
- 10:24Oh tight pants could praise that like ended at the knee
- 10:28But little diamantes on the side a little split. Oh, love them
- 10:32An irreversible puff of his like a guy and finance this
- 10:35Did you buy yourself at a living? Yeah
- 10:38Yeah, and I was like stoked and I mean I had a job at eleven
- 10:42I did the paper round and then I was working at a cafe at 13 because I just like wanted my own money
- 10:48I wanted to spend money
- 10:50How I wished and not like ask people for permission
- 10:53And I saw my sister doing it and I was just like I want to be like her everything at that age
- 10:57I want us to be like her maybe there's this is a reason why there's so much hang up for me and buying expensive clothes because I would go and buy like
- 11:03Little crocheted vests
- 11:06Point is I spent way too much money on clothes. I was really trying to keep up with people and like my friend to had expensive things
- 11:15And so I think I really overextended myself when I was young
- 11:19I put so much pressure on my parents
- 11:21Telled me like keep up with the crowd that maybe it's like delayed punishment for that
- 11:26That's why I struggle so much. She's been money on clothes now
- 11:29But it's weird because I had this memory like this would have been about five years ago
- 11:33And I went you know ruby. It's like a New Zealand fashion label. Yeah
- 11:37I actually still have the dresses that like body pink linen
- 11:41Long oh you were there yes. Yeah, like I still wear it. How was that your first?
- 11:46No, now wasn't my first memory, but I just this is just an example of when I felt anxious
- 11:50I remember I spent 150 pounds for like 300 New Zealand and I bought a home and I remember showing my sister
- 11:56And I was like she was like wow, it's cool. How much was it and I was like 300 dollars
- 12:00And I felt so guilty about it that I was like I should take it back tomorrow
- 12:04I'm gonna take it back tomorrow and that's kind of how I feel when I invest in expensive things
- 12:09And I get the same feeling like excited. I love this feeling
- 12:14From something that's vintage
- 12:16So I think maybe that's why I prefer to buy things that are secondhand because
- 12:22I feel better about it from an environmental standpoint, but also I have that same like excited
- 12:28Love what I'm wearing feel really confident and that when I've spent less money. Yeah, I almost feel better than when I've spent
- 12:36Heaps on something
- 12:38So I don't know I mean, that's like kind of interesting even in itself like
- 12:41To think about because I it's not that I don't buy expensive
- 12:44Brand-new things sometimes I do but like not very often. I just have a few brands that I
- 12:49I got I sound like such a bore, but I just have like a few brands that I buy clothes from that I know
- 12:55I don't really venture out. I don't really go vintage shopping. I think it's more a time thing
- 13:01You know like I follow a few brands that I like
- 13:03And I'll buy stuff from them
- 13:05You know, I know my style like all of that rather than shopping around. I get a bit experimental
- 13:12Like sometimes I'm like I'd love to go to Oxford Street and just go shopping. I like oh no
- 13:15Yeah, you know like I think the thought of it I like, but then actually in reality I'm like that
- 13:19How do you feel once you've bought something expensive?
- 13:22You've had it for a few years and then
- 13:26It's sat in your wardrobe because you've done a few like oh yeah sales of things where you've almost like had like you know
- 13:33An online like you just put it on your stories whatever
- 13:36And the reason I ask is because if I spend money on something like I honestly I could remember all of the things
- 13:42I've spent a lot of money on that were new clothes
- 13:45Even six years later if I'm not wearing it I find it so hard to get rid of for way less money than what I bought it for
- 13:53I don't know why and I don't know what that is, but like there was this
- 13:57It sounds like only I buy Ruby clothes, but I bought this
- 14:00Ruby jacket years ago, honestly it would have been over 10 years ago
- 14:03I still remember the print I still remember the start I was like held on to it for years and years and years because I thought
- 14:10Maybe it'll come back in fashion maybe I'll like it again. I spent so much on it. I can't just say
- 14:15Sell it for $20. I see I view it as like
- 14:19It's just money sitting in my wardrobe
- 14:22That I could be spending on something else. I'm gonna get way more wear out of all spend on something else
- 14:26That's not clothing. Do you know what I mean? Like if I could sell something for $100
- 14:30I might way rather that $100 then have it sit in my wardrobe and I might wear it
- 14:34Really also just like gathering so much shit
- 14:38Like I hate having so much stuff. Do you know what I mean? Especially if you don't move in countries and everything
- 14:42You do do big like clean outs. I don't know. Yeah. I'd rather sell it and get the money and then buy it put that in something else and then
- 14:50When I'm over that sell that and buy something else. You know, like just kind of completely
- 14:54You're a bit more detached. I think with spending money on things than I am. Yeah, I get really
- 15:00Fucked off. I put a hole in it or a stain or something because then I'm like
- 15:03There you go. Well actually now you mentioned it. Maybe that is why I don't because I struggle so much
- 15:09I mean literally at the top. I'm wearing right now. It's got a giant hole in it
- 15:12Yeah, but I spent so much on it that I can't bear to get rid of it
- 15:16Yeah, and I do still love it
- 15:17So I'll just fold over the hole and try and hide it there's actually really good
- 15:21Alteration spices. They'd be able to fix that. Yeah, but you know me with that man
- 15:25I'm not ready. But then it will look way nicer. Yeah, and then you can start
- 15:28But I think maybe that's a point though is because I struggle to look after things
- 15:32I lose them all the time like like things I really love. I remember being
- 15:37Oh god, I spent probably five hundred New Zealand dollars on these
- 15:41Rufik the Sachi sunglasses when I was like 14
- 15:45And I was for me in the shopping and I was probably like
- 15:48I don't know I'd had them for two weeks and I took them off left them on a table in a shop walked out
- 15:54Remembered half an hour later and was like oh my god my sunglasses ran back and they'd gone. Oh, no
- 15:59You know, so that kind of stuff of a Sachi
- 16:04You probably put them in the bin
- 16:06Yeah, fair enough
- 16:07But do you know the pointers I think maybe for me there's like I just don't trust myself with things
- 16:11I lose it. I miss place it. I ruin it
- 16:14So there's probably like
- 16:16The value of of going and spending that much on something. It's just like not worth it
- 16:20When I know that I can't look after it. It doesn't feel like it's good use of money maybe yeah
- 16:26Yeah, I mean that that could be fair
- 16:29I think I've also got really good recently in like if there's pants that I don't like the color of and I never wear them
- 16:36It's like okay, die them or if there's if there's like this waste code I had which I like hated the buttons
- 16:42I didn't even wore it. So I just want to replace the buttons you know like things where I'm like
- 16:46Don't just keep looking at it like a waste of space like either sell it or alter it if it's something that's too long
- 16:53Get it shortened like yeah, most things. I'd just be like like this jumper. I actually fucking hate because it's so
- 17:01So bubbly you can get bubbly remember I just need to do that
- 17:05But every time I pull it out, I'm like oh my bubbly. Do you hate the jumper? You know I love the jumper
- 17:11But again, this is quality. This is like this was really expensive
- 17:14But I was like coming to London. It's cashmere. It's like gonna be fucking warm
- 17:19Sorry, I stopped swearing, but it's probably as I hate it. I hate it
- 17:23That you can get a um, I was excited. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I just haven't had time. It's so weird. You always do stuff that you
- 17:31I'm surprised. That's the sort of thing I would do
- 17:33I know a million times. I'm like I hate it. I hate it. I just need to like sit in front of Netflix and bubble my
- 17:38Jumpers
- 17:39But like for example with this it's like I would rather
- 17:42spend the money on a high quality cashmere jumper
- 17:47And just bubble it every now and then
- 17:50Then buy a cheaper fast fashion like $50 jumper that I put in the wash and it shrinks and then I can't read again or
- 18:00Has a hole in it and then I can't read again or have to buy another one
- 18:03You know like this, but I think it does come down to taking care of it
- 18:07I think that's the key thing. It's like you have to wash it appropriately. You have to store it appropriately
- 18:12Try not to get stains or food on it. Well, there's a lot of interesting stats around
- 18:17A few of the goons and I've seen heaps of things on the internet as well where it's like
- 18:21It might be like buying a ship pair of shoes for $10 every year
- 18:25Actually ends up costing more in the long run than yeah, if you just went and spent more on something quality
- 18:32But I think the thing for me is like going and spending a big lump sum on something
- 18:37because I haven't been super
- 18:39Clever with my money in a way that I'm like
- 18:42I don't know I guess I don't often just have lump sums to and spend on something nice
- 18:46Even though I see stats like that and I'm like, you know, you could buy quality pieces and actually
- 18:52Save 50% over like a 10 year period if you were just going by something expensive in the first place
- 18:58But it's a privilege to have that money to spend in the first place exactly and that's the hardest thing is like
- 19:04It depends what it is as well like sometimes my fashion changes or I'll
- 19:08Not like something and want something different and so it's like
- 19:12In that sense and maybe for you it's like fast fashion is fast fashion or
- 19:18vintage is the best option because
- 19:21You find it difficult to take care of it or something like you know like in terms of
- 19:24Feeling guilty about spending a lot of money on something and then not taking care of it
- 19:29It's like okay, let's just remove that and that's been money on vintage or something that might be a bit a bit cheaper
- 19:35To remove that like guilt because I
- 19:37Personally things that I wear all the time like a handbag for example or sunglasses like they're expensive items
- 19:46And like I will pay quality for those because I wear them all the time so the cost per wear is like tiny
- 19:54Whereas I've bought Zara stuff for example
- 19:57Warn it once and then you wash it and the quality is on the same
- 19:59You know, it's just like a bit like off and I won't wear them and I'm just like that's such a waste of money in space and waste and waste
- 20:06Yeah, and all the things so it's like
- 20:09The best outcome is like I reckon high quality vintage stuff because it's still the test of time
- 20:15It's unique. It's good for the planet like there's so many good things. It's almost like a spectrum
- 20:22Got like cheap shitty stuff
- 20:24High quality vintage stuff. You got high quality
- 20:26New stuff. You know, it's like where do you put on that spectrum?
- 20:29It's actually really I want to think about it because the thing is I love the
- 20:33I actually love the idea of buying quality things that are going to last but I feel so guilty and sad when I ruin them or lose them
- 20:40Which is always happens. It's like it doesn't matter how hard I try that always happens
- 20:43Yeah, like even I'd bought this that yellow vintage coat that I bought for no I didn't lose it
- 20:50But I went into Mecha and I was not mecha some random makeup place over here and I was practicing on and I
- 20:56Accidentally dropped like one of those little twilly things that you use to try and put you know try on an eyebrow
- 21:02And I just put it and now and it was honestly it was the first day I wore it
- 21:05And then there's like a stain on the side and I took it actually to get dry cleaned
- 21:09Which is massive for me because I loved it and just like can't be bothered
- 21:12And it didn't come out and I was so gutted with myself and it wasn't even super expensive
- 21:16So it's like it is a really good idea to think okay
- 21:19Because back to what you said at the beginning about fashion being or clothes or buying stuff being kind of
- 21:25frivolous or superficial
- 21:27It does make you feel good. I feel amazing when I'm in an outfit that I feel confident the energy
- 21:32I bring to the world and people is so different
- 21:34But it's about finding what does that cost verse? Yeah, you know like where do you sit on the on the spectrum of what type of
- 21:41Shopping or investments should you be making like those sunglasses ones? I remember yeah
- 21:46I remember buying them and I'm from
- 21:48Batega
- 21:51But I know and I remember buying them and like I was like
- 21:56No, I like that. Oh, they're expensive like and they're not like how much would they've been at the time?
- 22:01And they're like $400 New Zealand. Yeah, there's actually that bad
- 22:05No, I know but I remember being like I don't really need
- 22:08Yeah, you know that I've got so many pieces like that's it and I say oh do I really need them?
- 22:13But now I'm like every time I go to wear a different pair of sunglasses like not wear these ones
- 22:17You know like so yeah the cost per wear and then I've bought I remember buying some other sunglasses
- 22:23Which were pretty similar price and I hate wearing them
- 22:28Like I literally would rather blind my eyes. Which ones are they big brown?
- 22:32Big brown ones. Oh, do you not like I hate them? But I'm like, you know what they're still in good condition
- 22:37I may as well sell them quickly now are they still have sold them? I'm gonna sell them. Yeah, cuz I'm just like
- 22:43I'd rather have that money
- 22:45Which ones are they what brand are they love it?
- 22:48Yeah, yeah, it's very cool
- 22:50But I've just called but like do feel good in them every time I see myself like a photo myself for that. I'm just like
- 22:56Yeah, I'd rather be wearing those ones. Yeah, so I'm kind of like well
- 23:00Sell them move on so you don't like get a stab in the heart every time you see them on your dresser
- 23:05You know, okay, let's talk about that then. Yeah, how much did you buy those for when you got them about 400?
- 23:11How much do you think you could sell them for if you got rid of them tomorrow?
- 23:16I'd question if you know what's the buy them let me know
- 23:22Maybe I'll just do a little um, sick and hand market place
- 23:26Probably
- 23:28300 I'd hope like they're still pretty like new season
- 23:31They're in great conditions. No scratches like anything. So I don't know. It totally depends
- 23:36And how long ago did you buy them eight months ago? So that's not that bad and eight months losing a hundred
- 23:41New Zealand a few times. Yeah. Oh
- 23:44I wanted to talk about like the moral dilemma
- 23:47That I know you have between like fast fashion
- 23:50And I'm sure a lot of people do is like well, I can't afford expensive stuff
- 23:55So therefore all I can afford is cheaper stuff
- 23:58And I'm not saying that everything cheapest fast fashion, but like how do you balance that dichotomy? I love that word
- 24:05with
- 24:06Buying stuff from like Zara and your huge Zara all you did there
- 24:10Versus the 700 gallons
- 24:13Oh of water that it takes honestly. It's not I haven't gotten answer for that in terms of having it all figured out
- 24:21But I I feel deeply guilty
- 24:24Yeah, to my soul when someone's like where's that from and I'm like you know what and it's always the Zara stuff
- 24:31That people will be like love your shoes. I'm like oh, why can't you like my top? It's not from Zara
- 24:35I know it's like always the way
- 24:38So I feel guilty admitting that's where I've bought it from. I don't feel great when I'm in the shot
- 24:45But I'm also not in a position to go and buy quality all the time and then replace it when I inevitably effort up
- 24:52So I'm kind of in an interesting situation where like I feel really proud and excited where I can buy a piece of
- 25:00Bloathing or an accessory that is quality, but I bought for example
- 25:04I bought sunglasses not that long ago for 150 quid so like 300 New Zealand
- 25:09Yeah, and I had them for less than a month and I lost them
- 25:12Yeah, so it's really hard because it's like on one side I feel awful buying fast fashion
- 25:18But on the other hand, I just like
- 25:21Doesn't matter how much I love something I cannot train my brain to know is it like the other day
- 25:26I didn't tell you this because I was so embarrassed I was having a production meeting with Emily our producer
- 25:33And I just got a new you may bag like kind of moss green like I love it
- 25:38I love it. I honestly took it for a walk just to wear it the other day because I
- 25:43It was new and I felt excited and I just walked around East London wearing it with nothing in it because that's how much I loved it
- 25:48We were in a meeting
- 25:50At the cafe and we got back to work and Emily was like oh your bag
- 25:55And I'd left it on the back of a chair at a cafe and Emily bless her heart
- 26:00I was like do you want me to just run back because you could see the like to look of terror in my eyes
- 26:04I was like no, no, this is my problem. I need to go fix it
- 26:07But
- 26:08It's like when you get annoyed at me for forgetting something or doing like you know forgetting the SD cards it's like
- 26:15It does not come from a place of not caring about something or not trying
- 26:19It's like actually is so embarrassing. I feel so shit about it
- 26:22But so then if I look at the fast fashion verse
- 26:26Quality if I find a bag in Zara
- 26:29This spending 500 600 dollars on a you may bag you're gonna do that. Yeah
- 26:34Well, it's just like it makes more sense for me financially
- 26:38And also from a waste perspective if I'm just losing things or ruining them all the time
- 26:42That's almost just as bad as going and buying fast fashion. So to be really honest
- 26:47I'm not in a place where I know the answer, but
- 26:50Where do you get inspiration for your clothes?
- 26:53There's this influencer that I really like her name's Vick Harris
- 26:57And
- 26:59Lining up for compliments. Seriously though. I love your style and I actually get real offended when you're like
- 27:04But we've got such different style and I'm like it's like a younger sister. So I feel like I feel like that was me with my sister
- 27:09And I'm like buying Zara the same stuff and she's just like fuck off
- 27:13There's so many things
- 27:16A new office space and we're both wearing the same shoes and I just was like I know that will be a hazing every
- 27:22The other night and we're wearing the same top and pants and I said to be fair that's a Maggie Maryland singular
- 27:26That wasn't I know you can't blame that's really I know I know, but it's just funny when it's like it's not funny
- 27:31I get how annoying it is. No, no, no, it's funny. It must be funny for other people and they're like
- 27:36Oh, do you guys like work together friends together?
- 27:40Okay, my question would be or not question my request would be if you see anything you think I would look good in yeah
- 27:46Please tell me
- 27:48I think it is I know yeah, I think it's a combination of like it's flattering
- 27:52But it's also when you go speak money on something you also want to not have the same as you
- 27:58And you see it around and you're like oh cool. Yeah, I like that
- 28:01You know like
- 28:02Definitely it's kind of like
- 28:04Instagram and reality the problem I have is like let's just say the new Harris Tapper um season comes out
- 28:10And I'm like, I love this nurse
- 28:12Vic has already ordered it paid for it and it's on its way to her house
- 28:16So like sometimes when I want to buy something it's like I'm not as on to it as you are
- 28:21So it's in your wardrobe by the time I've seen it. It's quite annoying. We should just combine wardrobes
- 28:26I mean, it's not a no for me. Not a no
- 28:29Oh god. How do you feel about a fast-fashion vest vintage first?
- 28:34I'd love to go to a market and have a look around
- 28:36But like if I want like a black winter coat
- 28:40I'm not going to go trawling to ventures stores to find one. Do you know what I mean?
- 28:43Like I'd like I'd rather sit online or go to the brands that I know and just buy you're an efficiency girl
- 28:49You know, you like to to get your black coat when you want to see people like even my flatmates got the most like gorgeous vintage stuff
- 28:57And I'm like oh, yeah, it's from this and I'm like oh, I wish I could
- 29:02Yeah, this podcast is actually sponsored by Remy marketplace, which is a new marketplace in New Zealand to be able to get quality
- 29:10vintage vintage fines
- 29:14So which is I actually ride up my alley because it means I can sit at home and look online and not have to
- 29:21troll vintage stores or seek-and-hand clothing stores. Well, I think what's amazing about
- 29:26When you find a vintage shop whether it be like a curated
- 29:30Something that's in your style. It's so great because someone has done a lot of the legwork for you
- 29:35I totally know what you mean going from spending an entire Saturday going from shop to shop if you're specific
- 29:40Trying to find something you don't want to spend heaps of money. Yeah, can be exhausting
- 29:45But I think if you go vintage shopping in that way like you just suggested in terms of like going to like not in hell and having a look
- 29:51Crown shops that kind of situations really fun if you're doing it without needing something if you're just
- 29:57Manifesting oh, I want a cute head scarf or like I'd love to find that's fun
- 30:01I think they're stumbling across things and finding them like whatever it's antiques or like anything like that
- 30:06I think if if you're wanting specifically like two white t-shirts a long black coat and some ballet flats
- 30:14Yeah, not it's maybe not the best approach
- 30:17But if you have the openness and you're like I want something new, but I don't know something like Remi where you can go on and see what's there
- 30:24It's like ideal exactly. I'd love to know with investing in fashion brands or companies or when you look at it from like a business perspective
- 30:33What you think because there's the consumer side of fashion and then there's the business side
- 30:39Where what how do you feel about fashion businesses? Yeah, I think there's quite a contradiction
- 30:45Being a fashion brand and trying to be sustainable because your whole business model is
- 30:52Having an impact on the planet a detrimental impact on the planet and your whole business model is to
- 30:57For people to consume you to keep producing new exciting things
- 31:01To keep people buying come back to store. So it's like
- 31:05It's the same for supermarkets
- 31:06Do you know what I mean like they produce a lot of food waste? Yes, we have to eat
- 31:10It's kind of not the same actually, but like do you know what I mean?
- 31:12Like the whole way they grow and make money is by people coming back again again and again
- 31:16And it's the same with fashion companies
- 31:18This is why it kind of pisses me off and they're like oh, we've released a new
- 31:22Clean line line. It's like but your whole business model is about consumerism
- 31:27It's like either you don't consume anything yourself or don't invest in retailers or you
- 31:33Try and do good for the planet. Otherwise if that makes sense like the fact that there is 150 billion garments produced each year
- 31:42Yeah, and it's estimated that 20% of them never get sold. I know let alone worn in non-use like that is just the waste
- 31:51Absolutely 150 billion. I think every year. I think it's more a
- 31:57society
- 31:58Thing about embracing
- 32:01wearing things multiple times
- 32:03embracing wearing vintage like even movie stars and
- 32:08Etrusc's it's like on the red carpet wearing the same dress that they wore to a previous premiere or like things like that
- 32:14You know, it's like why does it have to be a new outfit every single time? I think it's kind of starting from there of like
- 32:20They I remember this article on Kate Middleton. It was like oh she's won this blue dress four times. It's like and
- 32:26Got why it's that why is that news like that should be the norm it should be like she's got a new dress every time
- 32:33Should be the news do you know what I mean? So it's kind of
- 32:35Making that more normalized I think is is what would help solve the
- 32:40Environmental impact of fashion do and you don't invest in because there's we were having a look at some of the top
- 32:46Fashion companies that are public and LVMH is one they've spoken about quite a bit which is
- 32:51Louis Vuitton Moettinus I can't ever say Louis Vuitton Moettinus thank you. Yeah, which is valued at like
- 32:57$421 billion. It's insane. Do you with something like that? Would you invest in or how do you feel about it?
- 33:04Yeah, I invest in that and I think it's
- 33:06For me. It's because it's luxury. It's not high turnover. It's quality. It's like people aren't
- 33:13Buying a Louis Vuitton handbag every five seconds. Well some people
- 33:19Yeah, it's like you're investing in quality and
- 33:22It's not like the urban outfitters of the world for example, which are
- 33:26churning out clothes
- 33:28For every festival that's launched in the UK
- 33:32Well if you but if you look at like what I think it's quite interesting
- 33:36If you look at some of the fast fashion like share prices like urban outfitters at the moments like 36 dollars
- 33:42Or how do you say that?
- 33:44Indie techs
- 33:46Which owns like Zara and Birkshire and all of those or Birkshire. How do you say yeah $32
- 33:52Comparatively to LVMH your share price which is 935
- 33:56You know, it's like but what what does that tell you? No, I know you're saying share prices no indication of
- 34:02But I guess it's more the idea that
- 34:04For me what it tells me is if a share price is doing that much better. It's like a much more valuable
- 34:11Stock it. How do you know it's done better? What do you mean?
- 34:15Just because it's more expensive, but it could LVMH could have IPO'd it
- 34:18$900 a share. I mean, I guess the only reason I know this is because you've talked about LVMH and about all the different brands
- 34:25So it's like I know it's diversified. It's got Celine. It's got all those different brands under the same umbrella
- 34:29But a share price by itself like that tells us nothing about so well then what would you take out of that if you look at like urban outfitters
- 34:35That's doing shit or like indie techs that's doing shit
- 34:39That's the share price
- 34:41But that doesn't tell us anything about how the performance of the company yeah
- 34:45So like that 36 that could have been $1 yesterday and it's gone to 36 and that company's done fantastically well
- 34:52Do you know what I mean like it's a share price alone tells you nothing about a company
- 34:56I just think it's interesting that it's so much lower
- 35:00And it's also IPO'd at like a dollar and gone to 36. It's done fucking well
- 35:06Do you know what I mean like I'm trying to do you understand like the price the price doesn't tell you anything without
- 35:13context or context of the performance or context of the earnings growth
- 35:18So it's like I know I remember my mum always is to be like oh it's so expensive. I'm not gonna buy that
- 35:23I'm like, but it could have
- 35:25It could be a really good stock versus one that's cheap. It's done absolutely nothing or like that's bad example
- 35:30But like do you know anything yeah
- 35:33What I would say that like intertext is done fantastically well
- 35:37And so is that will be a match open out for this is the shitting itself
- 35:39I don't even know because I've looked at the share price
- 35:42the performance
- 35:44What just like
- 35:46It'll just like the throw away of shitting itself like if you think of something's shitting itself
- 35:50Like imagine if you're standing there shitting your man
- 35:56But TJX are really like because it's got that
- 36:00Lots of people won't know what TJX is. Yeah, so TJX they own TK Max in the UK
- 36:06And it's effectively they're buying other brands and putting them in their stores
- 36:09So they're buying like end of lines they're buying that probably that 20% of stock they never get sold
- 36:14You know, they're buying that and putting in their stores and trying to sell it
- 36:18Is kind of the overarching business model. So they're buying end of line staff stuff for real cheap and selling it to consumers before it goes to landfill
- 36:25So I quite like that business model
- 36:27Where she spoke about that in the
- 36:29Investing club
- 36:31Yeah, for anyone who
- 36:32But I also have to credit companies for like trying do you know what I mean like there's
- 36:38Investor pressure there's consumer pressure of like you need to do better from an environmental standpoint
- 36:45And so you know there's there is brands like Patagonia, which are like fantastic for the environment
- 36:51There's companies bringing out sustainable lines
- 36:54There's companies like Urban Outfitters has got a secondhand clothing marketplace
- 36:58Offshoot as part of its company. So there
- 37:01There is small progress
- 37:04Which is better than no progress. Yeah, I think what this
- 37:08Conversation has taught me
- 37:11Is that I would prefer to invest in
- 37:14Luxury and or quality vintage clothing. Yeah
- 37:19Just because I think it will make me feel better environmentally as well as I get to wear like nice
- 37:24Quality clothes. Yeah, I don't think investing in unless it was LV image
- 37:28I don't think I feel overly excited about supporting
- 37:31Companies in an investor way. Yeah, but like there was a stat
- 37:35I can't remember where it was from but the idea of like if I was to go for example
- 37:39It's nearly winter. I'm gonna need to get a nice jacket or a jacket and I could go and get
- 37:45You know like a budget
- 37:4780 pound something which would be way less durable and have probably worse materials and you know
- 37:53Probably get a cold and not come to work because it'd be sick
- 37:56Not then not be able to holiday. I hang out with friends
- 37:58But also like the idea of if I was to replace that budget version. Yeah, like every 10 years
- 38:04That's like it all comes down to planning. It's like okay cool. You do have winter coming out
- 38:08Start putting money away for a nice one. We'll winter coat and just like attach it to your wrist
- 38:14So that you don't lose it
- 38:16Because like things like that a good winter coat I invested in last year because I used to buy
- 38:23shitty
- 38:24Wait, actually didn't need
- 38:26hugely warm winter coats in Auckland, but in London you need good quality wool coats, which are expensive and so
- 38:34I invested in one last year. I wore it literally probably every day
- 38:38Well, I think it's just the idea of stopped on the street. What was this one which jacket is it the Harris everyone?
- 38:43What does it look like like a black like tuxedo jacket? Oh
- 38:47And I got stuck on the street and this guy was like what brand like where's your jacket from and I was like Harris
- 38:51tap and she's like what?
- 38:52I can understand my accent. I was like Harris tap her and like showed at the label. She's like okay cool, bye
- 38:58Yeah, I'm so sorry. I want to get stopped on the street. Yeah, it was quite I wanted to feel quite I get nervous
- 39:05Oh
- 39:07Goodness, okay, I think maybe I maybe I just need to do a bit of a narrow down of like where I can find really good vintage in London
- 39:15And I think it's also like try
- 39:17Remember it as a spectrum you know, you don't have to be always buying
- 39:21High quality pieces are going to last a lifetime or only buying fast fashion
- 39:27And feeling guilty about it, but that's what you can afford
- 39:30Yeah, if there's something like a handbag or sneakers or a jacket that you can be wearing all the time that you really really love
- 39:36Buy it because the cost per wear unless you're so feel all right
- 39:39And you'll leave your shoes outside the gym and I've forgotten them and lost them and then some of us
- 39:44I'll just buy you a thousand airtags babe. I was looking at airtags yesterday thinking I wonder if because I've just got a bike
- 39:50I'm wondering if I like can shove
- 39:51Absolutely and air tag down the like
- 39:54Strap it on link, you know, strap it on with some cell phone because if someone steals it
- 39:59Then they see the airtag they'll rip it out, but if it's inside the bike then then I can just constantly be finding it
- 40:05That was my plan. Yeah, good idea
- 40:07I don't do that with every piece of clothing imagine if on my side it was just like so it into the same
- 40:12She's not a bad idea. Maybe I should do that. Yeah, just take it to the alterations and be like right
- 40:17I've got a thousand airtags. Can you please just how much does it get me?
- 40:22Don't be like I don't think you'd be the first person
- 40:26It's actually a genius idea like with really expensive things sunglasses. You can't exactly tell you take stickers like
- 40:32So nice
- 40:34Chunky
- 40:35great
- 40:36My sunglasses back, please
- 40:38I was gonna say can I borrow them for the day, but let's be honest you won't get them
- 40:42Yes, you could of them that we need to take a mix that sticker. You can borrow my clothes. Thank you
- 40:47Um, I do not you met like I put them on in the lift as I was coming up the lift and I was like
- 40:52Take them off quick before the doors open. Don't want someone to come into the lift and you're like hi
- 40:56I don't know and kind of like sometimes I love the idea of just lenient being
- 41:01Like the best people singing your famous. Yeah, like fun
- 41:05I reckon if I wore a hood
- 41:07Sunglasses and had like two big bodyguards standing next to me the airport
- 41:10You're can people think I'm famous? I thought you're about to say what people think I'm Kendall Jenner. I mean
- 41:15I'll be fixed been told once or twice before that she looks like Kendall Jenner. She has never got by the way
- 41:21Before we started this podcast you said oh, I'm gonna get my head. I'm going to the heater
- 41:25The heat's where I have to leave right right now. What are you getting done? So I want
- 41:30Wait, what oh my god is I want you to go a bit purple
- 41:34But I don't think I have the balls
- 41:38I have an important meeting I turn up with purple here. How purple? How purple? So do a leaper like can you tell to it? Oh
- 41:45It will look so good. It's not purple. It's like slightly red
- 41:50Yes, actually
- 41:53But am I just trying to look like do a leaper wait wait look at me. I think I'm just trying to look like do a leaper
- 41:57It's face this way into me. I
- 41:59Reckon that would look so good on you. I feel like he just might be like
- 42:03I think it'll be expensive. I know and the upkeep might be quite a lot. Well, I think I'll just do it once
- 42:09And if you like it for a couple months and then because you've got the same eyebrows and skin tone as her
- 42:14I think maybe we have a do a leaper on our hands. Well, we'll TBC. How much do you think I've turned up tomorrow with the same here?
- 42:22Just do you know what I would love to know ask how much your normal hair cut color is and then I want to know what the difference is
- 42:28Yeah, because I feel like I'll have to strip your hair and then color it. I know and I don't want that
- 42:33So I'm like maybe if you could just but you've never done anything fun with your hair like why not just go a bit all out
- 42:40No, I won't I'll come back. I'll come back with just a kiss a living on a Friday
- 42:44She's like see you're gonna. I was gonna go five out of the edges. I know. Okay. I don't work weekends. Bye
- 42:53We go let's talk about making your wardrobe
- 42:56Maybe a little bit kind of the planet show it. Yes. I think that's a stunning idea. Honestly
- 43:00I would love for this to be something that we all do
- 43:03It shouldn't be that hard, but it's sometimes it is and so the fact that Remy Marketplace is now popped up is incredibly
- 43:10exciting you can get pre-loved items that actually make you look and feel good like some of the stats of wow
- 43:15But buying sick in hand instead of new can save up to 700 gallons of water. That's like skipping laundry for a year
- 43:21Do you know what I think I think if we all knew those things when we were buying sick in hand
- 43:25It would be so much more incentivizing like if you knew that how much good it was doing. It's a no-brainer
- 43:32So next time that you are tempted by doing a little fast fashion haul
- 43:35Why not head to Remy Marketplace instead because I guarantee you'll find something unique
- 43:40You'll be saving the planet and you're probably saving some cash too
- 43:44Start shopping sustainably look cool on the process the planet and your wardrobe. Well, thank you
- 43:51Thank you so much for listening to raising the curve these conversations are designed to teach you
- 43:55Everything you need to know to be better with your money
