- 0:02Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The Patriots Training
- 0:10Speaker 1: Camp Cast is your source for all the news from
- 0:12Speaker 1: Patriots training camp.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Practice is over. But the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:18Speaker 1: have you covered well? I miss yesterday now here to
- 0:20Speaker 1: review today's practice. The writers of Patriots dot.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Com today, that would be Evan Wlizar and Paul Perillo. No,
- 0:27Speaker 2: Mike do so a rare absence for Mike in these
- 0:30Speaker 2: training camp casts. It's a it's family days family. His
- 0:34Speaker 2: boys are here, Tyson Campbell is here, so correct, all
- 0:38Speaker 2: of them, Tyson Campbell, Tyson Campbell.
- 0:40Speaker 3: The Jaguars.
- 0:42Speaker 2: So. But I will say Mike took in day twelve
- 0:46Speaker 2: of training camp before he he relieved himself of his duties.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Full pads once again. We sort of talked about that
- 0:53Speaker 2: a little bit on the normal PU program, a little
- 0:56Speaker 2: bit of a shorter maybe a half hour less, a
- 0:59Speaker 2: lot of preppara work, I would say for Thursday night.
- 1:02Speaker 2: What really stood out to me, Evan was, you know
- 1:04Speaker 2: the first team period, it's Bailey Zappy, So my guess
- 1:07Speaker 2: is you're gonna see ZAPPI to start. Then you saw
- 1:09Speaker 2: a lot of Trace MC slowly in Malie Cunningham wouldn't
- 1:12Speaker 2: be surprised to see a good, good chunk of all
- 1:14Speaker 2: three of those Thursday night.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yeah, there was definitely a clear line of Mac and
- 1:19Speaker 3: some of the other top receivers that he's been throwing
- 1:22Speaker 3: to regularly in these practices were going through drills either
- 1:26Speaker 3: on a separate field or just behind the guys that
- 1:30Speaker 3: are going to be playing on Thursday night, and there
- 1:33Speaker 3: was definitely a feel of Bailey Zappi's gonna start on
- 1:37Speaker 3: Thursday night for the Patriots, and you'll see some of
- 1:40Speaker 3: the exciting younger receivers. I'm sure you know, Pop Douglas
- 1:43Speaker 3: and Kashan Boody will probably be his primary receiver. So
- 1:47Speaker 3: you're not it's not like you're gonna see You're not
- 1:49Speaker 3: gonna see anybody on Thursday Night that might make the
- 1:51Speaker 3: team or have some value on the team. But it's
- 1:54Speaker 3: gonna be this the clear cut veteran starter group. It
- 1:57Speaker 3: looks like they're all gonna sit out. And actually, after practice,
- 2:00Speaker 3: Dietrich Wise basically spilled the beans. Instead of yeah, he
- 2:04Speaker 3: said he's not going to play. And if he's not playing,
- 2:07Speaker 3: then that the domino effect. Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Now, one guy semi regular guy I would say,
- 2:13Speaker 2: is Taekwon Thohnton. I think you could get some of
- 2:16Speaker 2: him too.
- 2:17Speaker 3: I think at least for the first couple of drives.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I don't know how long Zapi's going to play, but
- 2:22Speaker 3: I would think that as long as Zappi is out
- 2:24Speaker 3: there that we will see Taekwon with him. And I
- 2:27Speaker 3: think the interesting thing with Taekwon is he's I don't
- 2:32Speaker 3: want to be too strong, but I can't really think
- 2:34Speaker 3: of another word besides demoted honestly to a secondary group
- 2:38Speaker 3: of receivers and not with those frontline guys. But he
- 2:42Speaker 3: is popping in those reps that he's getting now. I
- 2:45Speaker 3: would like to see him against a Christian Gonzales for example,
- 2:49Speaker 3: or some of the leading guys on the defensive side
- 2:52Speaker 3: of the ball at the cornerback position. But I have
- 2:55Speaker 3: noticed that his speed and his ability to create separation
- 2:58Speaker 3: with that speed has given no pun intended the emre
- 3:03Speaker 3: speeds and Isaiah Boldens of the world some problems. So
- 3:06Speaker 3: it wouldn't surprise me if if Taekwan sees some run
- 3:09Speaker 3: on Thursday night. It wouldn't surprise me if he makes
- 3:11Speaker 3: some plays on Thursday night.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah, well, no question he should get an opportunity. He's
- 3:16Speaker 2: gonna be playing against some guys that probably are fighting
- 3:18Speaker 2: for roster spots and whatnot. Some bookkeeping. Trey Flowers did
- 3:24Speaker 2: you know, officially sign with the team. We did not
- 3:26Speaker 2: see him out at practice. I know in the media
- 3:29Speaker 2: relations department was efforting to try to get him to
- 3:31Speaker 2: come out and speak. I hadn't seen him, Evan and
- 3:34Speaker 2: I did not stay till the very end of the
- 3:36Speaker 2: media availability. It was a rap. Okay, so unless it surprises, Yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 2: so we'll see. I mean, obviously he's not going to
- 3:43Speaker 2: be involved on Thursday night, but he is in the fold.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Still no time Montgomery, still no cold. Strange, you know,
- 3:51Speaker 2: Matthew Slater was back in uniform. But one interesting guy
- 3:54Speaker 2: I thought from a health related standpoint was Trent Brown
- 3:57Speaker 2: did take some scout team reps toward the end of
- 4:00Speaker 2: practice with Mac Jones at quarterback running this Mac Jones
- 4:04Speaker 2: seemed to have a great time running the scout team too,
- 4:06Speaker 2: maybe a little too much fun. Maybe a little too
- 4:08Speaker 2: much fun. I agree. It looked like Trent was pretty rusty.
- 4:12Speaker 2: He had some problems with I think Sam Roberts on
- 4:15Speaker 2: a couple of plays. He was you know, just out there.
- 4:18Speaker 2: So I would say that that's a progression from what
- 4:21Speaker 2: we've seen since pads came on, you know, So another
- 4:24Speaker 2: thing to keep in mind.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yesterday he was a part of the walkthrough at
- 4:27Speaker 3: the very beginning of practice. Today he did the walk
- 4:30Speaker 3: through again and then took some i would say three
- 4:33Speaker 3: quarter speed live reps at left tackle that you just mentioned.
- 4:38Speaker 3: So definitely a ramp up in participation for him. And
- 4:40Speaker 3: we also saw Matthew Judon take his first one on
- 4:43Speaker 3: one rep today and O line D line one on
- 4:46Speaker 3: ones and then also get a little bit of team
- 4:49Speaker 3: run as well. So I think both those guys are
- 4:51Speaker 3: starting to dial it up a little bit. And this
- 4:53Speaker 3: was my not the too my own horn, but this
- 4:56Speaker 3: was my prediction a little bit that once we get
- 4:59Speaker 3: to Green Bay and we get to the joint practices,
- 5:01Speaker 3: as long as Brown is healthy, I think that him
- 5:04Speaker 3: and Judhon will participate in Green Bay. I think we'll
- 5:07Speaker 3: see them in both joint practice sessions and that might
- 5:10Speaker 3: be it, but I think we will see them, yes.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And one other thing I'll add before we put a
- 5:15Speaker 2: rap on this, both Marcus Jones and to Mario Douglas
- 5:18Speaker 2: spoke after practice. Interesting to hear them talk about one another.
- 5:22Speaker 2: They've gone against each other a lot, and some of
- 5:24Speaker 2: the one on ones makes a lot of sense. They're
- 5:26Speaker 2: both smaller guys that rely more on speed and quickness.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Interesting to hear how each of those guys talked about
- 5:33Speaker 2: the other and helping them sort of develop. And Marcus
- 5:37Speaker 2: Jones in particular, I thought was complimentary of Douglas's ability
- 5:41Speaker 2: to get in and out of breaks, stop and start. Yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 2: you know, it doesn't really slow down, which is probably
- 5:48Speaker 2: a little bit rare for a rookie.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Yeah. Look, his route running is fantastic. It really does
- 5:53Speaker 3: stand out. The quickness. They're no wasted movement and out
- 5:56Speaker 3: of the break, which is really big for all receivers.
- 5:58Speaker 3: But I think a lot of these speed guy sometimes,
- 6:01Speaker 3: I believe it or not, the hardest part is decelerating
- 6:04Speaker 3: and stopping yourself and being able to then change directions,
- 6:07Speaker 3: and his ability to do that definitely stands out. I
- 6:10Speaker 3: think the one thing with him and not to you know,
- 6:13Speaker 3: rain on the parade. You know, I'm a pop Douglas guy.
- 6:16Speaker 3: I'm excited about you, induce, but just smack me around
- 6:19Speaker 3: every day. Let's just wait until we see it in
- 6:23Speaker 3: some live eleven on eleven or preseason work. Because it's
- 6:26Speaker 3: great that he's a one on one darling. It's great
- 6:29Speaker 3: that he's great in seven on seven, but that's not
- 6:31Speaker 3: real football. And one on one. I think this is
- 6:34Speaker 3: a little bit of a gripe that I have that
- 6:36Speaker 3: I can't just let go for some reason. But one
- 6:39Speaker 3: on ones for wide receivers and corners is not real football. No,
- 6:43Speaker 3: it's not real football. There's no help in the middle
- 6:45Speaker 3: of the field, there's no pass rush. These are just
- 6:48Speaker 3: covering guys on an island. And if somebody like the
- 6:50Speaker 3: Mario Douglas, who does have insane quickness and good speed,
- 6:54Speaker 3: if he's not separating in one on ones and he's
- 6:57Speaker 3: not an NFL player like period, but that doesn't make
- 7:00Speaker 3: him a superstar just because he's going out there and
- 7:03Speaker 3: beating people in one on one. So I'm really interested
- 7:05Speaker 3: to see him on Thursday night because I want to see. Okay,
- 7:09Speaker 3: we see the traits, we see the skill, and we
- 7:11Speaker 3: see the burst, but is that really going to translate
- 7:15Speaker 3: once we get between the lines on Thursday night?
- 7:18Speaker 2: So you guys can continue to listen to Mike and
- 7:20Speaker 2: Paul about Tomorrio Douglas. If you want to stay excited,
- 7:22Speaker 2: if you want to get rained on the parade. I
- 7:24Speaker 2: am excited, but.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I'm just being honest, like this is such a training
- 7:30Speaker 3: camp player for me right now, where it's difficult to
- 7:34Speaker 3: tell of whether or not this is just a guy
- 7:36Speaker 3: that in training camp practices where contact isn't quite as
- 7:41Speaker 3: as full tilt as a real game, is just going
- 7:43Speaker 3: to be a star because he's so fast, or if
- 7:45Speaker 3: this is truly a player that can go out there
- 7:47Speaker 3: and do it on Sundays and we'll have to wait
- 7:50Speaker 3: and see on that.
- 7:51Speaker 2: All right, So that's going to put a rap on
- 7:53Speaker 2: not only Day twelve, but our training camp casts because
- 7:57Speaker 2: as of now there will be no more open training
- 8:00Speaker 2: camp practices. I think that could change in terms of
- 8:03Speaker 2: the media. Maybe on Sunday Monday ish and we'll I'm
- 8:07Speaker 2: not sure if we'll have training camp casts for those days.
- 8:11Speaker 2: But it's been a quick couple of weeks and I
- 8:14Speaker 2: think you know, they got a decent amount of work done.
- 8:17Speaker 2: You could see the progression I think that you're looking
- 8:20Speaker 2: for that we didn't see last year. Offensively, it started
- 8:23Speaker 2: in a similar spot, but I think it got better
- 8:26Speaker 2: most days, whereas last year it just stayed the same.
- 8:29Speaker 2: So I think if you're looking for reasons for optimism offensively,
- 8:33Speaker 2: that would be it. You're seeing the progression.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I definitely said the progression. I would think mainly
- 8:38Speaker 3: in the red zone. Like remember the first couple of
- 8:39Speaker 3: days in the red zone was ugly for the offense.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Sorry, those hard play action with the little swing to
- 8:44Speaker 2: the back is given the defense fits. Yeah, all summer.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Yeah, now all of a sudden, they're starting to make
- 8:48Speaker 3: some more plays. MIKEASICKI had maybe the catch of training can.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I'm glad you brought that up. Tremendous one handed catch.
- 8:54Speaker 3: One handed catch tax to test. I think there are
- 8:56Speaker 3: three defenders in the air and it wasn't official there
- 8:58Speaker 3: to give them the touchdown. Yeah, it was. It was
- 9:00Speaker 3: a touchdown. And he's come on a little bit last
- 9:02Speaker 3: couple of days as well. So I think that's the
- 9:05Speaker 3: biggest part that you know, people ask me what's the
- 9:07Speaker 3: biggest difference between the offense this year and the offense
- 9:10Speaker 3: last year? And I just think that this year the
- 9:12Speaker 3: details look like they're they're being ironed out. It looks
- 9:16Speaker 3: like the timing and the rhythm and then also obviously
- 9:18Speaker 3: the scheme is doing what it's supposed to be doing
- 9:21Speaker 3: at most of the time. Now, I think they've looked good,
- 9:24Speaker 3: you know, the skeleton, the seven on seven looks good.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Let's see what the offensive line play looks like and
- 9:29Speaker 3: how it all comes together from there. But in terms
- 9:32Speaker 3: of the timing, the ability to get open from the
- 9:35Speaker 3: receivers within the structure of the scheme, quarterbacks receivers night
- 9:39Speaker 3: and day compared to last year.
- 9:41Speaker 2: All right, So that's Sevan Wizar and Paul Parolo that's
- 9:43Speaker 2: going to put a rap on Day twelve here in Foxborough.
