- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. All right, I have no updates for
- 0:24you guys, but as always, Please remember to rate, review and
- 0:28subscribe. It helps us so much.
- 0:30It helps us grow. Buy us a coffee if you feel so
- 0:33inclined and you want to support us and help keep us going star
- 0:36rate US on Spotify. That's probably the best thing
- 0:39that you can do for us right now and subscribe to us on YouTube.
- 0:42All right, the first story that I have for you guys is there is
- 0:45this new trend going around of women asking their husbands or
- 0:50their boyfriends or fiance's basically male partners to pack
- 0:54their lunch for work or drop it off for them at work.
- 0:57And then these women film themselves unboxing the lunches
- 1:01that their partners have brought them.
- 1:03So this trend started after creator Caitlyn Teaches shared
- 1:07an unboxing video of a lunch that her husband packed for her.
- 1:11So she called him. She said she forgot her lunch at
- 1:13work, which was at school because she teaches and she
- 1:15asked her husband to bring her one.
- 1:17Her lunch was filled with basically just like random half
- 1:23bags of snacks, like half full bags of chips with like the full
- 1:27claw clip attached, 2 day old Chipotle, random bags of snacks
- 1:32like I said, and also a bag of dog food with a note that read
- 1:37because you're my dog DAWG. So her video got over 30 million
- 1:43views in a matter of days, sparked a ton of backlash, and
- 1:47of course sparked this trend as well.
- 1:49And the backlash was mostly around how men treat the women
- 1:53that they are in like long term relationships with and kind of
- 1:56their learned helplessness in these scenarios.
- 1:59In a follow up video, Caitlyn addressed the controversy.
- 2:02Here's what she said #1. The dog he spelled it.
- 2:09Yes. His handwriting is horrible.
- 2:11Yeah, it is. You're right.
- 2:12Y'all are so pressed that he called me a dog.
- 2:15He did not call me a DOG. Dog.
- 2:19DOG, like a dog that has a leash.
- 2:22Did not call me that DAWG. Dog as in homie.
- 2:27American slang for homie. It's what we call each other.
- 2:30It's a joke. It was a joke.
- 2:32He was trying to make me laugh, which it worked.
- 2:35Tim and my sister came up with this idea together.
- 2:37My sister thought it was funny too.
- 2:40Moving on. 2nd the Chipotle. Y'all are all really upset that
- 2:42it was 2 day old Chipotle. Well guess what?
- 2:44Teach your brain deceived me. It was actually a day old.
- 2:46It was from the night before, so not even a day old.
- 2:49I said 2. As a teacher, one day feels like
- 2:517. OK so regardless if Caitlin
- 2:54forgives her husband or thought it was a joke, obviously she's
- 2:58not going to like do anything about this.
- 2:59She's defending him. OK, but in general this scenario
- 3:03does show a lack of respect that this man has for his wife.
- 3:08He wasn't thoughtful. He didn't put in any effort to
- 3:10make her lunch. He threw in a bunch of like half
- 3:13eaten snacks and some dog food and dropped it off to her.
- 3:16And if he didn't have time, if he was like on his way to work
- 3:18or whatever and he was time for two, then he could have either
- 3:22told her to like like Ubereats something he could have picked
- 3:24her up something really fast. Like there were a lot of other
- 3:27options here, I feel than just throwing a bunch of like
- 3:29mindless bags, like snacks into a bag and dropping it off to
- 3:33her. I also think though, more
- 3:36damning is actually the unboxing, the fact that Caitlyn
- 3:40got her lunch and thought, this is going to be interesting.
- 3:43Let me film it for TikTok because if my husband was
- 3:47dropping me off lunch, like it wouldn't even cross my mind to
- 3:50pull out my phone and start recording it because nothing
- 3:53would be weird about that lunch. Like he would probably pack me a
- 3:56more thoughtful lunch than I would pack myself.
- 3:58So it's very telling that Caitlyn and all of these women,
- 4:01their first reaction is like, let's see what my husband packed
- 4:04me because it tells you the expectations that they have of
- 4:07their husband and how low they are, unfortunately.
- 4:10And I think in the case of Caitlyn, like if he had packed
- 4:14her a thoughtful, hearty, like, normal lunch, like a sandwich
- 4:18and some of her favorite snacks and some fruit or whatever, and
- 4:21like, put it in the bottom and then maybe put like, I don't
- 4:23know, a freezer block or something on top and then put
- 4:27the dog food as a joke. So when she opened it, it was
- 4:29like dog food. And then obviously, as she kept
- 4:32going, she found a nice normal lunch.
- 4:34Then, OK, that could have been funny.
- 4:36Like when she's trying to play off the whole like, dog food
- 4:38thing. But it's like, no, in the
- 4:40context of what he brought you, that is what makes it so bad.
- 4:44It's not like the joke that he was trying to make here.
- 4:46And we see this so much. There's another instance that's
- 4:49going somewhat viral on TikTok right now where there's a woman
- 4:52running marathon and her boyfriend was supposed to like
- 4:54meet her at some, I don't know, I've never run a marathon, OK,
- 4:58and I've actually never seen anybody run a marathon, but he
- 5:00was supposed to meet her at some point on the course, you know,
- 5:02and like hand her snacks, OK, And I guess this was pre planned
- 5:05and he actually like didn't have the snacks for her.
- 5:08What the? Fuck.
- 5:12I don't. To the young girls that listen
- 5:15to this podcast, you do not need to marry men that treat you like
- 5:19this. This is actually not them like
- 5:22pulling jokes. This is not funny.
- 5:24They hide behind like, oh, you just can't take a joke.
- 5:27No, like stop weaponizing humor. That's not what this is.
- 5:32This is you showing such a lack of respect.
- 5:34It is you basically telling the person in your life that you're
- 5:37supposed to love the most, that you don't care about them, that
- 5:40you don't respect them. That is the message that they're
- 5:42trying to send to like they are trying to like bring you down a
- 5:46peg and make you feel confused and insecure and a little bit
- 5:51upset. And then they kind of turned
- 5:53around and be like, oh, it's just a joke.
- 5:54That's what's happening here. It's not okay.
- 5:57Don't fucking marry men like this.
- 5:58I can tell you is somebody who is in her like early to mid 30s.
- 6:02All of my we all dated like shitty guys, OK, of course, like
- 6:04in our 20s. But like all of my friends have
- 6:07found respectful, supportive, decent, progressive men.
- 6:13All of my friends are married to very like normal nice guys that
- 6:18would never treat them like this.
- 6:21There are lots of them out there.
- 6:22OK. The next story that I have for
- 6:24you guys is comedian and TikTok creator Stanzi Potenza is facing
- 6:30criticism after a recent video that she posted was meant to
- 6:34make fun of AI, but it ended up basically being thinly veiled
- 6:38racism. And it has sparked an entire
- 6:41conversation around how we are currently talking about or I
- 6:44guess, quote UN quote, joking about AI and the future of
- 6:48robotics. OK, so this sketch was centered
- 6:50around the term clanker, which is a word that has become kind
- 6:54of like a catch all quote UN quote slur for robots and AI.
- 6:58And if you are on TikTok, I am sure of the past couple of
- 7:02months you have, I've seen people using that word and like
- 7:05making skits about that word and talking about that word in
- 7:08relation to AI Caitlin. Are you still dating that dirty
- 7:11clanker? I'm not supposed to use it, but
- 7:14I can't speak my mind anymore. That's a robot.
- 7:17Yes, grandpa, I'm still dating RX4317 because I'm AI sexual.
- 7:21You're what? AI sexual?
- 7:23I'm only attracted to robots. So the phrase went viral in
- 7:26July, although I've heard it's from Star Trek.
- 7:29Star Trek, Star Wars? I don't know, I grew up watching
- 7:33a lot of Star Trek. My dad loved Star Trek, but I
- 7:36know it's from one of the stars. OK, but it went viral in this
- 7:41context in July. But from the beginning, there
- 7:44has always been a little bit of discussion kind of bubbling up
- 7:48to the surface about the fact that that term seems to parallel
- 7:52real world slurs and discriminatory terms.
- 7:55So Stanzi's skit went up on August 20th and it didn't get a
- 7:59lot of traction. First on TikTok, but now it's
- 8:02it's been posted on X and that's how it's really blown up.
- 8:05So it was a comedy sketch with the caption POV.
- 8:08You're a clanker in 2050. In the video, she plays a
- 8:12Southern American waitress who refuses service to two robot
- 8:16customers. Hi folks, what can I get started
- 8:18for you today? Oh well, well, well.
- 8:23Look what the Roomba dragged in. Didn't you see the sun outside?
- 8:28We don't serve clankers here. Can't you read?
- 8:31What are you 2 called? Nuts and bolts?
- 8:35We only serve human food. Hair wire backs.
- 8:38We don't have none of your oil or microchips or whatever it is
- 8:43you rust buckets eat. The character escalates when she
- 8:46threatens the robots with a bat, eventually boasting about
- 8:49kicking the quote. Walking USB is out of the
- 8:51restaurant. OK, so first of all, obviously
- 8:55this is supposed to parody. And when I say parody, I mean
- 8:57that very lightly, but this is obviously supposed to quote UN
- 9:00quote parody, kind of like 1950s era Southern US.
- 9:04It already gives that you're trying to recreate the same
- 9:07culture around 1950s, you know, segregation in America, user
- 9:12Lira Menial wrote. Quote the internal white
- 9:15disposition to say slurs, make slurs, even in jest in relation
- 9:19to the word clanker, which I completely agree with.
- 9:22OK, so like I said, there was already discussion around the
- 9:25term clanker and how it felt kind of loaded, at least in the
- 9:29way that people seemed so eager to use it online in these skits
- 9:33where they're basically cosplaying as bigots.
- 9:37And then with this one video, with this one skid, it kind of
- 9:40seemed to solidify that these skits are meant to echo
- 9:43segregation era racism. And look, these are valid
- 9:46conversations to have. Like, I am sure a lot of us have
- 9:50thought about the advancement of AI and what that means for our
- 9:53future and how that may further divide us, like between, I don't
- 9:58know, people that accept AI and robots and those who reject it.
- 10:03Like I think it's normal to look at how quickly technology and AI
- 10:08has advanced in the last couple of years and be afraid of that,
- 10:11what that means for our future, especially with all of the
- 10:14ethical, environmental, all of those implications around AI.
- 10:19Like it's normal to look at that, question it, be concerned
- 10:22about it and express those concerns and that uncertainty
- 10:25through humor and art and comedy.
- 10:28Like that is a normal human experience.
- 10:31People have been doing that for years.
- 10:32But in the case of Stanzi's skit and so many of the other skits,
- 10:36they do feel very motivated by an eagerness to be a bigot and
- 10:41to useless without the consequences though, because
- 10:45we're just really just talking about technology and robots.
- 10:48I'm interested to hear what you guys think about this because
- 10:49there's a lot of people, like I said, who believe that the
- 10:52framework in which these skits exist.
- 10:55Like they are trying to mimic a very specific era of time, a
- 11:00very specific time in history that was really horrible for
- 11:04anybody who is not white or like a white man specifically.
- 11:08And then there's other people who are like clankers are not
- 11:10real, like robots, like being discriminatory against, like
- 11:13robots and AI, like it's not human beings.
- 11:15And I'm interested to hear what you guys think.
- 11:17All right, the last story that I have for you guys is I wanted to
- 11:20talk about a bit of discourse that's happening with Haley
- 11:23Bieber online right now. So she had a really big weekend.
- 11:26She was celebrating elf cosmetics acquisition of her
- 11:29beauty brand Road, and that has led to some discourse online
- 11:34about the future of the brand and its relevancy.
- 11:36So Haley was in New York this weekend to represent her brand
- 11:39and it's $1 billion elf acquisition.
- 11:43She did a talk at the New York Stock Exchange and then she
- 11:46headed to Sephora Times Square to officially launch Rd. into
- 11:49Sephora. And all of this hype has led to
- 11:52people theorizing online that this is the peak of road and
- 11:57it's actually only going to be downhill from here.
- 12:00And the main arguments are because, first of all, it will
- 12:04become much more accessible. So it will no longer feel like
- 12:07kind of a cool girl exclusive brand.
- 12:10You know, that was a huge part of the hype is like if you could
- 12:13get your hands on the next Rd. drop before it sold out, then
- 12:17you were cool, especially because it didn't sell in major
- 12:19retailers, right? So like here in Australia, like
- 12:22you can't get Rd. I don't know if you could get
- 12:23Rd. in Canada either. I think you can now with
- 12:25Sephora. Anyways, it was like a really
- 12:27big deal to have the new road products.
- 12:30People have noted that the most recent drops haven't necessarily
- 12:34sold out. I haven't kept track of that,
- 12:35but that's what some people are saying online.
- 12:37Obviously elf had, I mean, I know it's elf parent company
- 12:41that bought Rd., but like elf Cosmetics itself had did a
- 12:44little bit of controversy recently around the mat rife
- 12:47stuff. People didn't really love how
- 12:49they responded to that either to the backlash.
- 12:51And there's a lot of comparisons as well with Kylie Cosmetics and
- 12:55how after Cody bought a stake in Kylie Cosmetics, everything just
- 12:59went downhill because the product changes, the quality can
- 13:02change because it goes from manufacturing like smaller, more
- 13:06exclusive batches to mass production, especially getting
- 13:09into a store like Sephora. And so often times things have
- 13:13to change in the manufacturing side of things to make that
- 13:16happen. So yeah, a lot of people think
- 13:17we are currently living in the peak of road and it is all going
- 13:21to be essentially downhill in terms of relevancy and possibly
- 13:25profitability from here. I could also see from a
- 13:27parasocial perspective, it no longer feels like you are
- 13:30supporting Haley. It feels like you are supporting
- 13:33like a big conglomerate, which I think would impact some of her
- 13:36fan base as well. Anyways guys, that's it for Mini
- 13:38Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 13:40I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 13:42and subscribe Spotify, star rate US, all that good stuff and I
- 13:47will talk to you tomorrow. Bye.
