  claims, comedian Sarah Silverman, authors Christopher
• 1:19
  Goldman, Richard Cadre have initiated legal proceedings
• 1:22
  against artificial intelligence conglomerate Open A I and social
• 1:26
  media giant Meta. The litigants accused both
• 1:29
  companies of copyright infringement, and a lawsuit was
• 1:32
  filed in a US District Court. The plaintiffs contend that Open
• 1:36
  A I's model ChatGPT and Mehta's Lama were trained on illicit
• 1:41
  data sets encompassing their copyrighted works.
• 1:44
  These data sets were supposedly acquired from what the
• 1:47
  plaintiffs refer to as Quote Shadow Library websites.
• 1:51
  Examples of these are Bibliotic Library Genesis and Z Library,
• 1:55
  amongst others. Where the contested books are
• 1:58
  allegedly available in bulk via torrent systems Now, Christopher

  Golden and Richard Cadre declined to comment and Sarah
• 2:05
  Silverman's team remained silent when approached for a statement.

  The lawsuit against Open Eye provides evidence that when
• 2:11
  prompted, Check PT summarized their copyrighted books.

  The summary is seen as a violation of the copyrights.

  Silverman's book, Bedwetter Golden's book, and Cadre's
• 2:20
  Sandman Slim are offered as examples.

  And the plaintiffs argue that the AI model never attempted to

  reproduce any of the copyright management information

  plaintiffs included with their published works.

  A separate lawsuit against Meta alleged that the author's works

  were present in the data sets Meta that utilize to train its

  Llama models. Now introduced in February, the

  Llama models are a collective of open source AI models.

  The complete meticulously argues the illegitimate origins of the
• 2:47
  database now. Medislama Model was trained on a
• 2:51
  data set known as Quote the Pile sourced from Luther A I.
• 2:56
  Now Luther A I previously described.

  The pile is being assembled from a copy of the contents of the
• 3:02
  Bibliotic private tracker. The lawsuit argues that
• 3:06
  Bibliotic and other similar shadow libraries are flagrantly
• 3:10
  illegal, and the authors unanimously declare their lack
• 3:13
  of consent for the use of their copyrighted works as training
• 3:16
  material for these a I models. Both lawsuits comprise 6 counts

  of various types of copyright violations, negligence, unjust
• 3:24
  enrichment, and unfair competition.

  The litigants are seeking statutory damages, restitution
• 3:30
  of profits, and more. Now, the lawyers that are
• 3:34
  representing the plaintiffs on the L Mitigation website, they
• 3:38
  acknowledge they've been contacted by writers, authors,
• 3:41
  and publishers expressing concern over Chat GP T's ability
• 3:45
  to generate text similar to that found.

  And copyrighted to contextual materials, including thousands
• 3:51
  of books. Now Savory has previously
• 3:54
  initiated litigation against AI companies on behalf of
• 3:57
  programmers and artists. Getty Images has also filed an
• 4:00
  AI lawsuit accusing Stability AI, the creator of the AI image
• 4:04
  generation tool Stable Diffusion, of training its model
• 4:08
  on millions of images protected by copyright.
• 4:11
  Savory and Budrick are also representing authors Mona Awad
• 4:15
  and Paul Trembley in a comparable lawsuit against the
• 4:18
  same company. Now, these lawsuits not only
• 4:21
  pose a potential dilemma for Open A I and other A I firms,
• 4:24
  but they challenge the very boundaries of copyright.

  As mentioned on The Verge cast, it's anticipated that lawsuits
• 4:29
  revolving around such copyright issues will continue to emerge
• 4:33
  in the coming years. Meta Open A I and Joseph Savory

  law firm were contacted for comment.

  But they did not respond in time for this episode.

  Now let's move on to some Elon Musk news and some meta news and

  some threads news and in related news, Jack Sweeney, the infamous
• 4:51
  college student who was suspended from Twitter for
• 4:54
  tracking the private gent of tech mogul Elon Musk, has

  shifted his tracking operations to meta threads.

  Sweeney, who faced multiple suspensions on Twitter, opened a
• 5:03
  new account on threads with a handle.

  At Elon Musk's jet, the account is guarded over 13,000 followers
• 5:10
  at the time of this report, and Sweeney announced plans to make

  post manually with the hope that Meta will allow auto posting on
• 5:17
  threads in the future. Before the suspension, he also
• 5:20
  tracked the private jet of Mark Zuckerberg via Twitter account,
• 5:23
  which was later suspended in December of 2022.

  Representatives for Meta did not respond immediately to our

  To prominence in 2020 after he started tracking Elon Musk's

  private jet, His Twitter account Elon Jet gathered nearly 500,000

  followers before being suspended, and Sweeney expanded

  his tracking activities to include other celebrities,

  including former President Donald Trump, Taylor Swift, and

  Kim Kardashian. His accounts were suspended
• 5:53
  following Twitter's ruling of a violation of its rules.

  Musk responded to Sweeney's suspension by stating that.

  Any account daxing realtime location info of anyone will be

  suspended as it is a physical safety violation.

  Musk later announced that legal action would be taken against

  Sweeney and organizations accused of endangering his

  family. In response to these events,

  Twitter updated its private information policy to restrict

  users from sharing individuals live locations.

  Despite this, Sweeney has resumed posting on Musk's

  platform, albeit with a 24 hour delay on flight data.
