- 0:24SPEAKER_03: Hey everyone, and welcome into another edition of CBT Live.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: Today is Thursday, October 1st.
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: It's amazing that we're talking about October already.
- 0:32SPEAKER_03: I'm Jim Fitzpatrick and I am joined by Ashby Lincoln, who's filling in for Bridget today.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: Bridget's on assignment in DC.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, it's a pleasure to be here.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: I hope uh I can fill in well, you know, well.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: Big shoes to film for sure.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: That's absolutely right.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: You do say big shoes because uh for a little fun fact here, Bridget happens to be uh, I'm sorry, Ashby happens to be Bridget's son.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: So my stepson.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: So doing a great job.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I try, I do my best.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Many of you have probably seen his articles on cbtnews.com.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: He's also director of our content, so he keeps things rolling uh with all of our writers.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: So that's that's awesome.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I've been here for I'm in my tenth year now.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: So uh didn't grow up in the industry, but the last 10 years of my life have been dedicated to automotive.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: So uh yeah, thanks to you.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, I'm excited about today's show for sure.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: I know, I know.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: Big show.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: I I know your mom's gonna be mad that she she missed this one, right?
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: This this is this is pretty cool.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: We uh we're gonna be joined uh by Senator Bernie Marino, which uh we should probably jump right in and and uh talk to the Senator right now.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: We're very excited to have him on live.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: So uh we're getting right into our exclusive interview with Senator Bernie Marino uh from Ohio, who's giving us an up inside look really at the status of the Connected Vehicle Security Act, where where things stand in Washington and what the auto industry needs to know right now.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Senator Bernie Marino, thank you so much for joining us on the show.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for having me.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: I appreciate it.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And uh congratulations on your great success, by the way.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh watching you guys grow has been amazing.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Great.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much for those kind words.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: And uh so you've said uh that the Senate is in good shape on this legislation that I know you've been working very hard on.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: What gives you the confidence that you have the support that you need, and who has been most important in getting it uh to this point?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Well, first and foremost, we've got to remind everybody what it is that we're working to do.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Uh, we want to make certain that we protect America from an industrial and national security disaster.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: So the idea that we would allow roving uh surveillance devices in our country that would, at the same time as stealing our private information, would decimate our industrial base, is obviously something that's untenable, and we're watching it unfold all over the world, whether it's Europe, Australia, Mexico, soon to be Canada.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So the goal is just really important.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Second thing to know is that this is really hard stuff.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Uh the auto industry is about 7% of our gross domestic product.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So you can imagine a bill that touches all that is very complex.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Uh it would not have been possible without my co-sponsor, Lisa Slotkin, uh as a senator from Michigan, without the UAW uh leaning in in a very significant way.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, the car companies Toyota, Ford, GM, uh Honda uh doing their part to make certain that they uh build this coalition, and really everybody to have their voice heard to make certain that we've got the legislation in the right place.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, but we have more work to do, there's no question about that.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, we have to make certain that uh the House of Representatives is fully aligned with us, but we understand what the parameters are in the Senate to get approval, and now we have to work through those parameters to make sure that they're acceptable to everybody in the ecosystem.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're getting pretty late into the congressional calendar.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Um how important is it now to make sure the Senate and the House are completely aligned on the legislation before you get too far down the road?
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Well, we have four weeks of legislative time left.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: So think about how crazy it is.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: We're in the car business, we think, what do you mean?
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: We have an entire quarter.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Well, in politics, we have four weeks.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's really not four weeks because we don't do much on until Monday evening, and we don't often do much on Fridays at all.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: So it's it's a condensed four weeks.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Uh to get legislation through a normal process in the Senate is about nine days, unless you have unanimous consent or an agreement from both Republicans and Democrats.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: So, you know, our founders wanted great compromise.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Our founders didn't want one party rule.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: They wanted both parties, all Americans, to represent the entire country.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: And that was when there was just 13 colonies.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Uh now there's 50 states, huge population, 350 million people, lots of diversity out there.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Uh so it's hard stuff, but yeah, so we keep my my point in saying that to you, John, is there's no fast track available.
- 4:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Uh we have to really work through to get as much consensus as possible.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Uh John Mullinar and Deb Dingle in the House have done an amazing job working with uh Brett uh Guthrie uh to uh get 120, 130 co-sponsors in the Senate.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: We're off up to almost 60.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: So we've got a lot of consensus building and more to do over the next five weeks.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: What are you hearing from Congressman Mullinar and Congresswoman Dingle?
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: I know they've been doing a lot on this.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: So they what are you hearing from them and and and what still needs to happen in the House to get this across the finish line?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, John Mullinar has been somebody who's been talking about the threat from China for a long time.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, he is probably the smartest guy in the House of Representatives when it comes to understanding national security threats.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: So super excited that he jumped on this bill right away.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, the other one is obviously Congresswoman Dingle.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, she represents Michigan.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, she's somebody who's uh lives breeds and eats the auto industry.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, she knows it better than anybody uh that I can think of in the House of Representatives.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: So both of them have been critical allies.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And you know, one of the things that I I just have to say with a little bit of a smile, as somebody who's new, John, is it's super easy not to pass legislation.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: That's very easy to accomplish.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, passing legislation is really, really hard.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: And passing legislation that's this impactful is extraordinarily difficult, especially in a short time frame like we're dealing with.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: But thanks to everybody on board from Alyssa Slotkin to the UAW to Deb Dingle uh to uh Congressman Molinar and Brett Cuthry, uh, we're gonna get this across the finish line.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Senator, we've got some pretty unusual alignment here between automakers, dealers, and uh organized labor.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, how important has that industry coalition been in getting this legislation to where it is today?
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I'll say it this way, it would be impossible to do it without them.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, the UAW obviously this is an existential threat to their auto workers because if Chinese auto companies were allowed to bring cars into America, we're not gonna sell more new cars.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: We would just cannibalize existing makers, and these car companies would be eaten alive.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: They can't compete with a country.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: You know, I think uh General Motors Ford, Toyota Honda, can compete with any car company on earth, but they can't compete with an entire nation.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Secondly, if they were allowed to be made here in America, they would be made in non-union factories, and so of course that would be a threat to uh to the great auto workers that uh helped build this country.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: So I'm confident that we won't allow either one of those two scenarios to happen.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: But uh we can't also discount the hard work from the Teamsters Union and the United Steel Workers.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Uh so we've got a great coalition, like you said, of organized labor with auto companies and auto dealers.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: So the entirety of the ecosystem is aligned on the goal.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: What we have to do is keep focused on that goal and not get caught up in who's doing what or who's doing what and what move is happening.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Because look, the sausage making is ugly.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you that right now.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: It's very, very ugly.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: It's hard work, uh, but we're gonna plow through it.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: Um, you've been very complimentary of President Trump's record on the American auto industry.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: From your perspective, what has this administration done that you think has made the biggest difference for automakers and their workers?
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Well, first and foremost, obviously, uh, was making certain that uh the message to the world is clear.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: If you want to sell cars in America, you have to make them Americ in America.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, my point of view is that does not include the Chinese, or by the way, the Iranians, the Russians, or the North Koreans.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: And secondly, uh, we re-instituted a very simple concept.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: It's called consumer choice.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: This isn't about the government saying, hey, you should only buy large SUVs that use a lot of gasoline.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: This is about, hey, car companies, make the cars that you think consumers will find the most desirable.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: If that's a full battery electric vehicle, great.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: If it's a plug-in hybrid, that's what I drive, fantastic.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: If it's a mild hybrid, great.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: If it's a full ice car, great.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: If it's a car with a 16-cylinder engine that uh is capable of 0 to 60 in two seconds or less and costs$3 million, God bless you, make that car too.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Uh but the government, the government should not play a role in dictating to consumers and manufacturers what's best for them.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: It's their money, it's the customers' money, they should be allowed to spend it the way they want.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Send that signal to the car companies.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: There's been a lot of media out there, John, that says, oh, the you know, we're rolling back uh environmental standards, uh, which is gonna, you know, force car companies to make one car or the other.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: No, it's the exact opposite.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: What we're doing is not forcing car companies to make the cars government wants.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: We're asking car companies to make cars consumers want.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: That's what free markets are all about.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: There's been a lot of discussion around the ownership provisions and specific automakers.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, I want to clear that up for dealers watching.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: Was this legislation ever intended to target a specific American automaker?
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, get your thoughts.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Absolutely not.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: This is about targeting uh predatory Chinese auto companies massively subsidized and controlled by the CCP.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: You gotta remember, these cars are all available to be remote accessed.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: So imagine that remote access capability in the hands of an enemy government.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: That makes no sense.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: And by the way, let me just be clear our bill does not also target China.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: What it says is any uh uh company that's domiciled in a foreign entity of concern, that designation isn't made by Bernie Marino.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: That designation is made by our intelligence agencies.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: And there's four countries right now Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, I don't think people would want to go out and buy Iranian automobiles, maybe not today, or Russian automobiles today, although the lotta probably turned people off when that occurred.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: But uh so look, this isn't about targeting American car companies or car companies that have been doing business here in America for a long time, making great investments in the United States, employing uh tens of thousands of American workers who that technology could be in the hands of an adversarial government.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Now, again, there's nuances and tweaks that we got to work on, but I'm confident, like I always uh have been in my entire life, John, which is if people of good faith and good intent get together, great things will happen.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: For a dealer sitting here watching all of this unfold, what should they expect over the next few weeks?
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: What are what are the key milestones that they should be watching for?
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Look, we're in we're in the uh home stretch.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: We gotta get this thing done.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Uh if we don't get it done in the next uh uh legislative time period, uh basically at the end of the by the end of this year, the entire process starts all over again.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Uh we don't know what the political wins are gonna be next year.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: We have no idea where what the moves are from the uh CCP next year in terms of what how they view it.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: I can tell you they're desperate, John.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Uh they built a capacity of almost 40 million cars that they can make per year.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Put that in perspective, that's four times the amount of cars we can make here in the United States.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: They've saturated their market.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: 99% of the cars sold in China are made in China.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Uh in the U.S., that number is in the mid-50s.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: They're exporting more cars than we make.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: We have to get this done.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: So my message to dealers is look, uh, as much as you can and the connections that you have with your member of Congress, uh, please uh get them focused on this bill.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Obviously, not until after the election because they're probably just focused on the election right now.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: But we've got to get everybody united on a simple concept.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: We're not gonna allow this massive economic and national security threat to hit the United States of America.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Get past whatever differences they perceive to be out there.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Let's build consensus and let's get things done.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Um, look, look at I would ask your dealer viewers to take a look at what's happened to dealers in Australia, where Chinese cars went from 3% of the market to 30% of the market in just three years.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Toyota dealer valuations, for example, are down from seven times earnings to three times earnings.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: The market is collapsing with used vehicles because used car prices crash when these uh massively subsidized vehicles come in.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, they're gonna be dealing with a long-term national security threat.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: So we we're just not gonna allow this to happen in the US.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And I know there's lots of work to do.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: And uh to all the coalition partners out there that may be watching this, thank you for all your hard work.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's very frustrating uh to uh have to plow through a lot of these disagreements.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, but at the end of the day, the goal is very worthy.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And like I said, when people of good people of good intent get together, great things happen.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no question about it.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: So if you had to lay out the the path uh from today in getting this legislation signed into law, what what are the remaining steps?
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: What needs to happen between now and the end of the year?
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: And what would you like to see the dealer body do if they can do anything right now?
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: What would you like them to do?
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: To help your activities.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: If you're an automobile dealer and you care about the value of your franchise, you care about the legacy you're gonna leave to your kids and grandkids, please call whatever relationship you have with any member of the House of Representatives and just ask them to do one simple thing.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Please focus on the Connected Vehicle Security Act.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Explain to them the importance of supporting this bill.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: In terms of what needs to happen, look, the President of the United States will sign this bill into law.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Nobody's stronger against the threat of Chinese automobiles than President Donald J.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Trump.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: He knows that, he understands it.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: He was talking about this well before anybody else was.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: We have to get the House of Representatives and the Senate completely aligned.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: That will only happen, only happen thanks to the hard work of my co-sponsor, uh Alyssa Slotkin, John Mullinar, Deb Dingle, and Brett Guthrie.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: And of course, the UAW plays a central role here with the other union groups with the auto companies.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: We all have to be on the same page.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: And I would just ask everybody for the next 60, 70 days that we have left to get this done, let's put our agendas down.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: I know there's not a lot of trust that is built in Washington, D.C.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: It's a sometimes a little bit like middle school.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Uh but ultimately, I can tell you that we're not doing this for ourselves.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: We're doing this to make certain that we can look back at this moment in time and say that we prevented industrial suicide in this country.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: I wish the same level of concern had existed in this country 26 years ago when we normalized trade relations with China, where we took China's middle class from 2% of their population to 70, and in doing so, decimated cities all over the United States of America.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: We're not gonna we we cannot allow a repeat of that disastrous policy, John.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: I love the fact that you think I look so much like my son, John, that you keep calling me John.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, Jim.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: You were doing such a you're in such a flow state.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: I don't want to interrupt.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: I hope my son is watching.
- 15:59SPEAKER_04: John is so effective of saying that every Fitzpatrick can only be named John.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: So sorry about that, Jim.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: I apologize.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: Well, Chad John happens to be my father and my son.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: This is live, so your son's having a blast.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: Exactly, exactly.
- 16:12SPEAKER_04: As I am.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: I'm like, wow, he thinks I look like that young.
- 16:15SPEAKER_04: Take it as a compliment, I just did.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: Aren't you?
- 16:19SPEAKER_04: Come on.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: And John was the officiant in my wedding because of his his youthful looks and you know, his uh and all a bunch of likes.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: I have the kind of brain that once a name is in there and it's wrong, listen, it's not.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: No, don't worry, he's here.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm honored, by the way.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: So yeah, Senator, thank you so much for joining us.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm I'm sure everybody watching is getting a much better understanding of where we're at with this Connected Vehicle Security Act.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Um, one thing before you go, I'm I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, but I was I was raised and brainwashed as a kid as a Cleveland Everything fan.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Uh my dad's from Medina, um and up in Ohio.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: So he's probably watching.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: I'd be remiss.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: I don't know uh if you're a uh a Browns junkie like I am or a sports fan.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Wait, what do you mean?
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: We're gonna win the Super Bowl this year.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: You know, they're deeming tonight's game, the game of the century, the game of the century in field in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: Beautiful Cleveland, Ohio, might I add.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Look, nobody likes Pittsburgh.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: We can all agree on that.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Go to Pittsburgh.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: And then go to Cleveland.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: No, go to visit both cities and tell me which one you had a better time in.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Cleveland every day.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Cleveland every day.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: That's that's uh I'm gonna check your uh your chops right now live.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: Oh H?
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: I o.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: Come on, there's no better way to finish this segment.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we got Brownson I've got Cavs in a couple weeks opening in Philly against Mr.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: LeBron James, who I know you have done business with in the past.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: So it was a pleasure to speak to you.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: He should be able to score you some good tickets, by the way.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: He might be the hookup on the code.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: I wasn't gonna ask that.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: I'm sure.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: But you know, if you feel you know generous enough that I'm I'm my phone is always available.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: I'll make sure that John over here gets you my contact info.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: So no, that's not everything to John.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Jim gets nothing.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: No question.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: All can decide, Senator, thank you so much for coming in.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: And I know that on behalf of the entire auto industry and the NADA, uh, we didn't really touch on that, but they've been doing so much great work, Mike Stanton and his his team.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: Um, so I on behalf of really the the entire auto industry, you've really been the leader on this very, very important issue.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: And I know that everybody appreciates it.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: I've spoken to so many people in the industry industry that are that feel so happy to have you as a spokesperson and a senator there where the laws are actually being made on behalf of dealers and and really the auto industry.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: So thanks for all that you do, and uh and thanks for giving us the time here at CBT News to give us an update.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: I know that there's a lot of people in the industry that'll get a lot out of it.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: So thank you so much.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: Really appreciate it.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Appreciate it.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: All right, until next time.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: Yep, great guy.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: Great guy.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: And it is, he's he's really become such an advocate overall for the industry.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: You know, and everybody that I talked to is like, yeah, we got Bernie Marino now.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: Finally, we've got somebody in, you know, that is uh spokesperson for the industry.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, obviously he came to speak at our fair pricing and compliance summit uh last June.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: And uh it was it was super informative uh for me and everybody in attendance and heard good heard nothing but great things after the fact.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: So that's right.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: Uh it was great to get to talk to him this morning.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no question.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: What do we have next?
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: Well, before we get into the rest of the show, I'd like to thank our friends over at Conversica.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Conversica's awesome.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Uh Ignite by Conversica is an AI native revenue activation engine for automotive retail.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: It connects dealership data, assembles customer and vehicle context, and applies AI reasoning to identify and activate specific sales and service oper uh sorry, specific sales and service revenue opportunities across the dealership.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Conversica.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: We spoke to uh CEO Mike Gilson yesterday.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: So you can go on our website or YouTube or see that interview.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: He was great, by the way.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: He he really, you know, it's it's uh you know, to get a CEO on.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: Um some do a really you know good job.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: Uh he's one of them.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: He he really is a great spokesperson for his company.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Mike Fitzpatrick Gilson.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: He did share that with us that his middle name is Fitzpatrick.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: He can't be all bad, right?
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: No.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: But is his first name John?
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: That's the question.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: I I think everybody's is nowadays.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: You know what's funny is is just that, you know, uh uh Senator Marino's been a good friend and uh he does know my son very well, and uh so uh whenever he sees me, he calls me John.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: I think he calls my son Jim every now and then.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: But uh never.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: You do that with your kids too.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: I do with my kids.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: That's that's exactly right.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: John is Colin and Colin is Courtney and Courtney's Heather.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: But you are always Ashby.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: I'm always Ashby's only one of me.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: There's I'm the fifth, so there's multiple Ashby.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: So yeah, so uh no, I just wanted to, you know, you know you know I'm big on uh some funny videos.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: Huge, huge on v funny videos.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: And this is one that I think is apropos because we hear so much about in the industry AI and how AI is being used in in uh companies now, especially specifically in the auto industry.
- 21:10SPEAKER_03: And when I came across this clip, I couldn't stop laughing because I think we can all relate once we see it as to uh as to what happens here when maybe AI is being used a little too much.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: So let's roll this clip and see if you agree with me.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: It's pretty funny.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: I'm a very calm person normally, but I I lose my temper immediately.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: The automated robot lady that's like, hmm, I didn't quite get that.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: I think it's the JFK.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: I lose my mind right away.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: And I think it's because she's trying to act human.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: They put a in there, like that's gonna trick her.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: Like, hmm, I'm gonna think about this response.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: I'm talking about a pre-programmed robot, hmm.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: And if she talks like this, we'll like you figure it out as she goes along, okay.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: Right when I hear her, I'm like, oh, this agent agent, agent, agent, agent, agent, agent, agent, agent.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: That's gonna get a person normally, right?
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: They fixed that.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Now she goes, okay.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: Sounds like you want to talk to an agent.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Oh do you oh do you rub it?
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Kill you, kill you.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: You're alive, but kill you.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: I get dark.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: I'm like, you'll never love.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: You never you'll ever know the emotion of love.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: Hmm, I think quite that.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Uh you got it.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: You got it.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: And after an hour of hurry, you finally get a human being, and he's not from India.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: He's in India.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: That's different.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: He didn't know what Fort Lauderdale was.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: I'd go to Fort Lauderdale, and he said, pa da da.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: And I was like, no, not pa-da-da-da.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Lauderdale.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: I just typed I typed into the computer F O D D A D O D A No Fa da.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: And then I was like, roll-back, rub, rubba, rub back to the robot.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: I think uh some people might pronounce it f-da-da-da.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: I know I love that.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, so let that be a lesson to all of us.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: You know, as we're designing this AI and it's doing so much, we gotta we gotta get it right.
- 23:22SPEAKER_04: But I thought it was funny that at the end you wanted to go back to the robot because the robot at least was getting it, you know, right mostly right.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: I I wouldn't be so he says that you know the robot will never feel love.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: I'm not so sure that's the case.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: It's getting scarier and scary every day.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Um I don't know if you've ever talked to Chat GPT with your voice, and they talk back.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: One time I asked it a question and it had to think about it, and it said, one second.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: No kidding.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: Started typing.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: I'm like, you're not actually there's no keyboard in front of this AI.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: Um I I was uh it kind of took me aback.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: I I did not like that very much.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: No, that's funny.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: We don't know where this whole AI is gonna be headed, right?
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: Cars are talking to us and appliances are talking to us, at computers and and everything else in between.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, as cool as it is, it's it's equally as scary.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: I bet you were wondering what these cards were over here.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: I was what are those cards over here?
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: You know, well, it's the first time that I've done a lot of things.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: Do you want to tell the audience what a great stepfather I've been?
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: Or what we'll see.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: So, as my my first time on the uh the show, right?
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: I thought I'd come with something a little more fun and entertaining.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Let's do it.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Um I will give you uh actually I'll introduce the segment.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: This segment is something I like to call fact or whack.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, fact or whack.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I'm gonna do that.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: It's like a fact or false, a true or false.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Okay, I guess.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: Do these products, do these automotive products exist?
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: There's the graphic graphic.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: Are they made up?
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: Did I make them up?
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Okay, so is it fact or whack?
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Is it fact or whack?
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Okay, and I will have to get your answer.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: There are eight items.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: There are eight products.

- 25:33SPEAKER_04: $3,700 to keep your drink cool.
- 25:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 25:35SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: That buys a lot of hot drinks and cold drinks, but no room temperature.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: Don't even think about room temperature.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely not.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: And if you want, if you if you get your Mercedes, it is included, but a replacement will cost you about$4.95.

- 25:51SPEAKER_02: All right, on to number two.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: It is a food storage device, it is a baguette holder for your bread.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: I gotta say that's whack.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Is that whack?
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: You would be incorrect.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: That is a fact.

- 26:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: So that's right.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: Uh all right.

- 27:07SPEAKER_02: So uh Fiat No offered this as an option for their drivers.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: Um, a La Vaza branded espresso machine uh for the 500L.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: Well, to go with your baguette in case you want a little bread and coffee.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: No, it's my dream car, honestly.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: If you merge the two, um, my my I have about a seven-minute commute to work every morning.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: Ashby is a definitely a foodie, so I would be doing you would like that.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, well, I mean I've they they cared about safety, though.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: I will say fiat uh did the the only way that you can use this is if the car is stopped.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: So you cannot drive and make your espresso.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: Well, that's kind of that's kind of BS.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, no, you can just drink it and spill it on yourself.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: You should be able to make it at 70 miles an hour.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so you're all right.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: What are these car companies thinking?
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: You're a one for three.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Um all right.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: Number four is a uh passenger privacy partition.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: So, like a limo.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: But it's between you and your passenger.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no, no.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: Bridget might want this for you.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm sure she does.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: Um there's no question.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: So fac or whack.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm gonna say whack.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: Please tell me.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: There's a diagram.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: That is whack.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: That is whack.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: I did make that one up.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: Um Wow, you you got it.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: You get did did uh AI do that?
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: That picture?
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, the picture looks like it's really.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: I I got some friends together and we we made the product and created that.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: Now that was uh shout out to Higgs.
- 28:31SPEAKER_03: There might be some OEMs that are looking at that going, you know, maybe Ashby's onto something.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: Maybe we do need something.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: There's a you know, I a few of these you could either bring back or you might want to consider implementing these.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: So passenger privacy partition.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Number five, yeah.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: In cow in sorry, in car soundscapes.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: So like a noise machine.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: You get your white noise, you get your ocean breeze, your rainforest.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Fact or whack.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna well, based on my my record here, I'm gonna go with fact.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: That is a fact.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: That is in my car.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: That is in your it is in your car?
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: Yep, I drive a Kia tell you ride.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: That is there's a uh I've I've not used it, I've just kind of played around with it.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: But they have ocean breeze, wow, you know, rainforest.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, you know, uh babbling brook.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: I I've been in your Kia, and it is incredible.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: There's there were things in that vehicle that were not in our Range Rover.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that Kia.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: Uh I think ever since the logo changed, they've been doing fantastic things.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: The logo change.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: Once they did away with those mouse or the mice that uh that yeah, yeah.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: Was that them?
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Wasn't that the hamster?
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the Kia Soul, yeah.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, the hamsters.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: All right, next one.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: You got that one correct.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: That is a fact.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: Uh next one is the auto flush windshield system.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: So this one is an advanced windshield cleaning system that uses cameras and sensors to identify bugs, dirt, and other debris, and automatically targets the affected area with washer fluid.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: I there's a heat map of I'm guessing aware that most of the I I mean, I would I'm gonna go with fact on that.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: That one is whack.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: It is whack.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Okay, I made that one up.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: Totally fabricated.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: You're doing some great uh pictures of what looks like it really exists.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a fictional R MSRP would be about uh$1,300.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: $1,300.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: Well, if the other is$3,750.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: There is a company who makes a windshield wiper with the fluid integrated through the wiper, which I can get those hard-to-reach places.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Uh all right, next up is the executive exit system.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: So this is kind of think about like those executives that are uh the chair lifts on a staircase.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: This is uh for it's an executive exit system.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: So it's a swivel, it swivels 90 degrees and uh lifts out of the car and props the person up and so they can you can make an entrance and you can make an exit.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Wow, okay.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: So that would run you 6,900.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: And that that's a fact.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: That one is whack.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: That one is whack?
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: I made that one up.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, wow.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's a great idea though.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: I'm saying that one that that one, yeah.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: I could see where somebody, especially if somebody's got a bad back or you know, knees or whatever, that you know what I mean?
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: Where that would help?
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Yes, I'm saying it's it's it's more, maybe not a don't market it towards executives, market it towards the you know, the elderly.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: Uh it's an excessive.
- 31:19SPEAKER_03: Why'd you look at me when you said elderly?
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: As I'm talking to you.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: That's fine.

- 31:52SPEAKER_02: It is a fact.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: Okay.

- 31:58SPEAKER_02: This one's just be a that one, I think, is a Lexus because Toyota, there's Toyota branding on the fax machine.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: Isn't that crazy?

- 32:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the 7 series.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: Because we know how popular fax faxes are in it.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: Well, it's actually good they did that because I still receive faxes on a daily basis.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: So you do?
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: No.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: I've never once received a fax in my whole life.
