- 0:10My name is Drew and I'll be your guide to the
- 0:13night sky for the week of October the 19th through
- 0:16the 25th. The calendar says late October and
- 0:21the heavens agree. Crisp air, long nights, and
- 0:24a new moon make this one of the best observing
- 0:27weeks of the year. And since Halloween creeps
- 0:31ever closer, we're continuing our eerie tour
- 0:34of the cosmos with a visit to a place both beautiful
- 0:37and haunting, the Cosmic Graveyard, where dead
- 0:42stars still whisper across time. Whether you're
- 0:46tuning in from the backyard, the balcony, or
- 0:48just your imagination, I'm glad you're here.
- 0:51So, find a cozy spot, let your eyes adjust, and
- 0:55let's see what the sky holds for us this week.
- 0:59The moon disappears this week, reaching its new
- 1:02phase on Tuesday, October 21st. That means a
- 1:07stretch of wonderfully dark skies from Sunday
- 1:10through Friday, perfect for galaxies, nebula,
- 1:13and meteor watching. And speaking of meteors,
- 1:17the Orionids peak Monday night into Tuesday morning.
- 1:21These swift streaks are the dust of Halley's
- 1:24Comet, burning up as Earth plows through the
- 1:27debris field. With no moonlight to wash them
- 1:30out, you could catch 10 to 20 per hour under
- 1:34good conditions. Face southeast after midnight,
- 1:38lie back, and enjoy one of autumn's finest shows.
- 1:42Now for the planets. Saturn glows in the southeast
- 1:46after dusk, nestled in Aquarius. It's still bright
- 1:51and steady, and its moon Titan is visible in
- 1:54modest telescopes. Jupiter rises around midnight
- 1:58in Gemini, climbing higher each morning. Watch
- 2:01for its shifting cloud belts and dancing moons.
- 2:05Mars and Mercury linger low in the western twilight,
- 2:09challenging but not impossible with binoculars
- 2:12and a flat horizon. As the constellations wheel
- 2:16overhead, Pegasus and the Great Square mark the
- 2:19heart of the autumn sky. Follow the chain of
- 2:23stars east to Andromeda, and you'll find the
- 2:26glowing oval of M31, our neighboring galaxy,
- 2:31easily seen in binoculars. Below that, seek out
- 2:35M33, the Triangulum Galaxy, a faint but graceful
- 2:39swirl of starlight. Farther west, Perseus rises
- 2:43with a glittering double cluster, while Cassiopeia's
- 2:46W shape rides high, tracing the Milky Way's rich
- 2:50star fields. Down south near Saturn, swing your
- 2:55scope toward M2 in Aquarius, a fine globular
- 2:59cluster. And if you have a nebula filter, check
- 3:02out the Helix Nebula, a ghostly ring of gas that
- 3:06lives up to its nickname, the Eye of God. Stay
- 3:10up past midnight and you'll see Taurus climb
- 3:14the eastern sky, bringing the Hyades and the
- 3:17Pleiades, the first messengers of winter. Before
- 3:27we get into the second half of the show, I wanted
- 3:29to respond to an excellent listener question,
- 3:33and it's one that's been on my mind also. The
- 3:36listener writes, I'm seeing the same artist's
- 3:39depiction of a black hole everywhere lately,
- 3:43notably as the logo for the AI service Grok,
- 3:46which appears all over Twitter or X, but also
- 3:50in movies like Interstellar. Is this really what
- 3:53a black hole looks like? Thanks for that question,
- 3:57and if you follow any space news, you probably
- 4:00know exactly what the listener is referring to.
- 4:03That striking, impossible -looking figure that
- 4:06sort of resembles a ringed planet, maybe if designed
- 4:10by MC Escher. It's sort of a glowing lopsided
- 4:14ring with a dark center, and it's been plastered
- 4:17across science videos, documentaries, space agency
- 4:21posters, and yes, the logo for the ex -owned
- 4:24AI service, Grok. It looks almost too perfect,
- 4:29like some digital artist cooked it up after a
- 4:32late -night sci -fi binge. In case you've never
- 4:36seen one of these depictions, I'll include a
- 4:38link to such an image in the show notes. Well,
- 4:42here's the twist. That image is rooted in the
- 4:45actual physics of how black holes warp light.
- 4:49What looks like a sleek bit of graphic design
- 4:52is possibly a very accurate visualization. Let's
- 4:57unpack it. At the center of that image is a dark
- 5:01patch. It isn't the black hole itself, because
- 5:04you can't actually see a black hole. Think of
- 5:07it as the shadow of a black hole. When light
- 5:11from hot gas passes near the event horizon, the
- 5:14black hole's gravity bends those paths. Photons
- 5:18that get too close are trapped forever, creating
- 5:22a dark silhouette slightly larger than the event
- 5:24horizon. That's what we're looking at when we
- 5:27see that central void. Surrounding it is the
- 5:31bright thin ring. That's made of photons that
- 5:34have orbited the black hole before escaping toward
- 5:37us. Think of light caught in a cosmic racetrack
- 5:41looping around at breakneck speed, then slingshotting
- 5:45off to hit our telescopes. This is called the
- 5:49photon ring, and its existence is a direct consequence
- 5:53of Einstein's general relativity. But the part
- 5:57that really gives the image its distinctive shape
- 5:59is the crescent, the brighter arc on one side
- 6:02of the ring. That asymmetry is due to a relativistic
- 6:07effect called Doppler boosting. Contrary to what
- 6:11we might think, black holes don't just suck in
- 6:14matter from every direction. In almost all cosmic
- 6:17environments, the gas around them has some spin.
- 6:22Thanks to the conservation of angular momentum,
- 6:25that gas can't just fall straight in. It forms
- 6:28a flat, spinning accretion disk. Over time, turbulence
- 6:34and magnetic forces shuffle angular momentum
- 6:37outward, letting material slowly spiral inward
- 6:40and heat up. This disk is what lights up so brightly
- 6:44that we can actually see the black hole's surroundings,
- 6:47even though the hole itself remains invisible.
- 6:51The gas in the accretion disk is whipping around
- 6:54the black hole at a significant fraction of the
- 6:56speed of light. On the side rotating towards
- 6:59us, the light is intensified. On the opposite
- 7:03side, it's dimmed. The result is that glowing
- 7:06curve you see. In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope
- 7:11gave us the first real image of a black hole's
- 7:14shadow in the galaxy M87, and it looked a lot
- 7:19like these simulation images. A glowing asymmetric
- 7:23ring around a dark center. So far, it's our best
- 7:27glimpse at gravity in its purest, most extreme
- 7:30form. In a moment, we'll leave the living sky
- 7:35behind and step into a darker realm, a place
- 7:39where suns have burned out, galaxies devour one
- 7:42another, and time itself decays to silence. We're
- 7:46headed into the cosmic graveyard. That's coming

- 8:12Our destination is not a place, but a condition.
- 8:16The cold and quiet aftermath of creation itself.
- 8:20This is the Cosmic Graveyard. When you look up,
- 8:29the stars seem eternal. But many of those pinpoints
- 8:33are already dead, their light still traveling
- 8:37towards us, tricking our eyes with the glow of
- 8:40long -expired suns. The universe is a cemetery
- 8:44of extinguished stars and broken galaxies, a
- 8:48realm where everything bright must one day fade.
- 8:57First, let's take a look at white dwarves, the
- 9:00embers of suns. Stars like our sun end their
- 9:05lives gently. They swell into red giants, shed
- 9:10their outer layers, and leave behind a dense
- 9:12core about the size of Earth. That remaining
- 9:16ember is a white dwarf, a glowing cinder cooling
- 9:20slowly for billions of years. Someday, each will
- 9:24fade to invisibility. becoming a black dwarf,
- 9:28though the universe isn't old enough for any
- 9:31to exist yet. They are the quiet ashes of creation.
- 9:40Then there are neutron stars, the undead pulsars.
- 9:46Massive stars die violently. Their cores collapse
- 9:50in a flash, crushing protons and electrons into
- 9:53neutrons. The resulting neutron star packs the
- 9:57sun's mass into a sphere just a dozen miles wide.
- 10:02A teaspoon of that matter outweighs a mountain.
- 10:07Some spin rapidly, beaming radio pulses into
- 10:10space. We call them pulsars, rotating corpses
- 10:20that tick like cosmic clocks. When first discovered
- 10:25they were nicknamed LGM 1 for little green men
- 10:30But these aren't signals from aliens. They're
- 10:33the heartbeats of dead stars that refuse to stop
- 10:38Then there are black holes Graves with no bottom
- 10:46for the heaviest stars gravity wins completely
- 10:50their cores collapse beyond recovery forming
- 10:54black holes, regions where not even light can
- 10:57escape. They devour nearby stars, twist time
- 11:01and shape entire galaxies. They're tombs without
- 11:06headstones, yet they also sculpt the cosmos.
- 11:13But even black holes will not endure forever.
- 11:17Physicist Stephen Hawking showed that black holes
- 11:20leak energy. tiny sparks of radiation. And that
- 11:24means given enough time, even these ultimate
- 11:27graves will evaporate into nothing. Even galaxies
- 11:37can die, and they cannibalize each other. Galaxies
- 11:42themselves expire through consumption. Big ones
- 11:45devour small ones, scattering stellar remains
- 11:48across the cosmos. Our own Milky Way is guilty.
- 11:56Right now, it's consuming the Sagittarius dwarf
- 11:59galaxy. It's stars smeared across the sky like
- 12:03ashes scattered by a cosmic wind. And in about
- 12:07four billion years, Andromeda will collide with
- 12:11us. Two spirals locked together, merging into
- 12:15a single bloated relic. Even in death, gravity
- 12:19hungers. The far future brings the great dimming.
- 12:26Eventually, star birth ceases, the last red dwarfs
- 12:30fade, the galaxies darken, and black holes evaporate.
- 12:43The cosmos cools toward absolute zero, the heat
- 12:47death of everything. It's a state of perfect
- 12:53equilibrium where no energy remains to power
- 12:56change, light, or life. Just the last photons
- 13:01drifting through infinite darkness. If the stars
