- 0:35SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Mike Wade, my co-host outside of Richmond.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: Mike White, what's up, brother?
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: Hey man, how you doing?
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: I'm good, man.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: I am good.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: I'm still buzzing off of, I mean, we're now Wednesday.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: We are now several days removed from week one, but God did it start with a bang.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Holy week one.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it really did.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: And we've got a short week this week.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: Like I kept thinking today, all day, I kept thinking tomorrow was Friday.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: So I'm just I'm ready for this next weekend of college football action.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: It's totally weird.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Labor Day has thrown everything off.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: The fact that it's Wednesday night already and that we're rewatching football, although it's NFL tomorrow, no college until Friday, um, we'll still get you primed for uh for that.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: So that's super exciting as well.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Uh before we go any further, we forgot this last week.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: What uh what's you drinking?
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Uh in honor of the uh old Dominion monarchs out of Norfolk, Virginia.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Not really.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: I didn't do that on purpose, but it's a a a bench top, which is a beer out of Norfolk.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: It's a uh windup robot.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, it's it looks like uh it looks like Bender from uh Futurama a little bit.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you can't see it.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: He's got like a comb over and a mustache.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Um it's really interesting.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: It's not my favorite.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: Um it's okay.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: It's all right, it's fine.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Benched up, good stuff.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: They make good beer.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Uh don't judge a don't judge a beer by its cover.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, they make a lot of good stuff.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: I'm drinking, I actually took a page right of your book.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: I think you were drinking this last week.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Uh Stone Hazy IPA.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Is this the one you were drinking last week specifically?
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: I know I know you drink a bunch of stones, but I don't know if it was this one.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Um it's a 6.7.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it was that one, but I don't know either.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: But it's a this is this is a 6.7, it's a hazy IPA.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: It's exactly what you would sound like.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Stone, awesome brewery based out of San Diego doing stuff in Richmond now.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: It's for their uh East Coast distribution.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Um Citrusy, just it's nice as hell.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: It's a great beer.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: Well, what's been up with you, man?
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: What's going on in your life?
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: Not much.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Before we dive into the action, the short week kind of threw me off as well.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: It's also my birthday on Tuesday, and my wife has been asking me what I want for my birthday, which I forgot it was my birthday until like yesterday.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: Um, my mother-in-law wants to get me presents, and I don't know as a 39-year-old or soon-to-be 39-year-old man, I don't know how to ask for things.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Like I was new LSU polo.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Done.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: I literally have seven of those in my classes.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: $70 polo.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: $70 polo.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: I could use another one.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Probably do the away one, the alt one, maybe the white one or the black one or something.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: You can't have too many of that.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: Uh anything new with you?
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Um I've been watching the uh new Lord of the Rings Ring of Powers.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: And um I'm uh uh only two episodes out, so um I've and I've watched them both.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: I don't know what's going on, but I'm totally into it.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: I also have no idea.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: I'm also watching them both.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: I I read an article about Numinor, about like the fictitious island that went away, and I still don't have a clue who's who.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: It is big time Lord of the Rings vibes, like between the characters, the whimsical music, the They spend like 15 minutes dumping exposition in the first one, and I still have no clue.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that's correct.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: I'm I think I've got a feeling it's sweet, it's it's incredibly shot.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: It is, I've I've read this on Twitter a couple times, the most expensive uh expensive TV show ever made.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Jeff Bezos, for that.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: So it's gotta it's gotta turn into something somewhere.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: At some point it's gonna get exciting, right?
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: No, I think it's really cool.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: I just I'm enjoying it.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't know what else to say about it.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I like it too.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: We could continue to talk about it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: The current criticism is it's a little slow, which I I just think it's it just feels very Lord of the Rings, right?
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: It's just buildup, it's just on the table, it's sat in the table.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, don't talk to me about slow.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: The first Lord of the Rings movie is them walking over a mountain for like two hours.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that's the non-extended version.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: And it was awesome.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Like yeah, it's awesome.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: It's like four and a half if you bought if you got the five disc extended version.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, if you're really down to hang out.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: If you're into that kind of thing, then it's not slow, it's just yeah, you really had nowhere to go.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, so that's new with us.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about the news uh in the college football world.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: And obviously, there's one piece of massive earth shattering, just crazy changing news, and that of course would be the college football playoff.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: As we all know, the playoff was uh the top four teams as decided by a panel.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, they have now agreed, uh, the commissioners and uh conference leadership, or I guess whoever the powers should be, I don't know, I'm sure that the comprehensive list is, have agreed to expand it to 12 teams, make a 12-team playoff.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: With the first uh 12 teams being seeded one through four, and if we'll get a bye, five through twelve play in the in round one.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Um five, six, seven, and eight host a home game, which on a campus somewhere, and then the next seven games are uh bulls, more sense, more or less, uh quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Um, the details have yet to be hashed out and when it'll actually start 24, 25, 26, but humongous change from pre-BCS, which was just random bulls, to the two BCS, the two random computers, to the four-team playoff, to the 12-team playoff.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: We are seeing the sport just change crazy rapidly.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: What do you got?
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: What do you what's your take?
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: Um for those many, many many of our followers and our friends already know my initial reaction was hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: Um I have backed off somewhat since since that initial reaction.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: Um, just because I I knew this was coming.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Um, my you know, my first thought was, you know, why ruin a good thing?
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: The best thing college football has going for it is the regular season.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: I remember going to games in college, going to Tennessee games, back in, you know, at the back end of our kind of prime run.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: You know, you lost a game, you left the stadium cussing because you're now we I remember saying it, there goes the national championship.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: That that that will not be muttered again, leaving it a one-loss stadium in this new era, which is unfortunate.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: All you have to do is make the top 12.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's something to be said for that where the just the crazy pressure that was on a week eight game, um that is reasonable.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: There's I mean, the and the the the the kind of the comp the common refrain from a lot of um college football fans who've been longtime fans is like it's it is such a departure from what college football was for so long.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Um uh I'm gonna go I'm gonna go the other way.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: I actually love it.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: I'm I am all in it.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: I know you do.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: I'm in it.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: I'm into it.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be amazing television.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: Here's the thing they had to do it.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: The bowl season was dying rapidly between the opt-outs and the already like kind of pitiful interests in the gallery furniture.com bowl and the Sasparilla bowl or whatever.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: Hey, come on, those are good bowls.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: No disrespect to those two bulls, they're the they're they're like the citadel of bowl games.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: I'll just pick on them for no reason.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: There just wasn't the bowl season was dying, and in a big way, really, that they had to do this.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: If they were going to have any kind of postseason that was gonna be worth anybody watching or participating in, players playing in it, they had to do this.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: My only complaint, and that's a big one.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: My only complaint when I have and this all the details have yet to be finalized, so I could totally be wrong here in a couple months, is I wanted the first um eight games to all be on home stadiums.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: I want them to be on campus.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: I like you agree that college football at its best is a win, is it's played on college campuses, and those and a lot of these college all the college colleges have have cathedrals on their campuses of these amazing venues to play football on.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: The idea of my LSU Tigers hosting the Michigan Wolverines or Penn State Nippney Lions in December in a playoff setting in Death Valley just gets me so exciting.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: You automatically get the biggest uh games those uh venues have ever hosted.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: Yes, automatically, because there's never been a playoff.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: So you add the tradition and the pomp and circumstance and the the home field advantage just that makes college football so great.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and what also and what to your point detracts from the bowl season, you you inject that into the playoff, and you've got an amazing product.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: So that was one of the things that did turn me around because I think they are gonna do that for what the five through eight.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: For the five through twelve, yeah.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: So for the first four games will be on campus, and then the next seven are supposed to go to bowls.
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: The next seven will go to a watered down, neutral, corporate, yes, um, soulless, sterile environment that expensive sucks, just like yeah, just like a lot of the the March Manist sites that end up being empty seats from you know X amount row back.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: They'll have massive curtains hosting.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Um that's not true.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Obviously, if it was played, these college ball games are probably gonna be really well attended.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: I'm sure they'll do really well.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: It's just like there's there's just so many, there's just so many great college football powers that never see one another.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, how about a Big 12 team?
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: How about an Oklahoma playing at Clemson, you know, week 13 or whatever it whatever it's gonna be, or USC going to Miami for, you know, for not for the Rose, but for uh just to play the m play the Hurricanes.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: I just there's there's all these different matchups that the playoff is doing.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, those four games are gonna be, they might even be better than the quarterfinals, which is where they will be.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: They 100% will be, and and that's why that's one of the reasons why I was against it to begin with, is because when you look at the college football playoff now, there's such a big gap between the top few teams and everybody else.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: You're gonna get more like Cincinnati-Alabama matchups where you know the that first four matchup will, you know, first eight or whatever games will be good.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: And then that next round, it's gonna be beat down city in a neutral site.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: It might be because a lot of those teams probably don't belong.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I kind of feel like the one through four teams got jobbed.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Like, frankly, like let's pretend it's this year, let's pretend it's last year, and it's Ohio State, Alabama, Cincinnati, and who's the other team in the playoffs last year?
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: I can't even remember.
- 10:29SPEAKER_03: It would be Alabama, Michigan, Cincinnati, Baylor would be the top four.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, those four teams don't get to host champions.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Don't get to host a playoff game on their campus, which I think for them, I think the players and coaches would be a humongous uh uh privilege and opportunity and just a fun way to play in front of your home crowds.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Like even though it's one less game and it's that they're that much closer to winning it all, I just can't help but feel like they're missing something.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: So I think the playoff committee probably, I mean, let's face it, you know, money rules the world in college football.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: We that's has not been a secret for a very long time.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: I would have really loved to have seen, like I said, the first eight games all be playoff and then the semis and the final be bulls like they are now.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: But you know, I'm not the one writing the checks, so I don't get to make those decisions.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I've come I've come off it.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: I don't hate it as much.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: It I do feel like it it robs us of a lot of the regular season um stakes.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: You know, those games just don't mean as much, and it does rob us a little bit of um what it means to win the conference championship game.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: You know, I know it gets you that to that buy, um, but you could, you know, you could be a Georgia lose your conference championship, be fifth, still be in a perfect seat, you know, no big deal.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: That game, Georgia Bama, you know, in that scenario, it really doesn't mean a whole lot.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, you're both in, you're both playing.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, so I don't know.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and George, if it's Georgia Alabama, and they're one and two, which right now they look like if if we're playing, if we're judging it based on what we saw the week one of college football, they might, you know, the SEC championship first week December might be one against two, in which case whoever loses, they're still not, they're still in the top four.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: They're not going anywhere.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: Well, what's interesting too, I was looking um I was looking at the previous year, and uh last year it would have been Michigan State uh a rematch against Ohio State, who beat them down earlier.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Then the winner of that would have played Michigan again.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: You would have had like a big 10 like round robin of teams that already played each other.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: So you know, you I mean, yeah, which probably wouldn't have been that but that would have been a little weird.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: I you know what's gonna happen is they're gonna massage those rankings.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: They because the the committees left themselves out.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: And they do this with the one through four already.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, they there were years where they made sure the SEC championship was not a rematch in the very first round.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: So they um they just they didn't want that, they don't want that they don't want that to happen.
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: So they're they're gonna they're gonna they're gonna massage the the rankings five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, just so they can't, just so they can't have those same teams always in the same spots.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, so we'll see about that.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Um so anywho, uh any more takes on uh comfortable playoffs.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: We move on.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: We should move on.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: We can talk about it forever, but let's move on.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: Sounds good.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Sounds good.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Uh so the next thing we're gonna do is we're gonna talk a little bit about um uh kind of reactions to week zero.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna do the we're not gonna run through all the games like we usually do, uh, just because um uh um we uh you've you've seen the stats, you've seen the highlights, you already know.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: So we're just gonna we're just gonna kind of provide you some uh some just kind of some reaction what's some reactions, some takeaways, what we've seen from the action, and go from there.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Uh Mike, are you there still?
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Do we lose you?
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: Uh I think so.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Can you hear me?
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so you are.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: You're back in the booth.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, good stuff.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Can you hear me?
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: Yep, I'm good.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: We've got some we've got some double action, but we'll we'll work through it.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Technical difficulties, folks.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: Thanks for sticking with us.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: All right, cool.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: So uh reaction number one, I guess I'm gonna start with uh based on what I saw.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: These are kind of hot takes, impressions, rapid reactions, whatever, however, you want to characterize them, no real rule.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: We're just not gonna run through the whole series.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'll take number one.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, Georgia is an absolute cut above everybody else.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: And I think I'm going to include Bama in that.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: Um, I what Georgia did to Oregon was just unbelievable.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: The fact that they are, the fact that they have arguably the best tight end room in the history of college football.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: The Stetson Bennett is all of a sudden a monster.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: Their defense, while losing nine players, whatever it was to draft, still doesn't seem like misses much.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: And Oregon is a good team.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Oregon's gonna win nine games this year, and they weren't they had no business being on that field.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: Georgia is filthy.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: Um, I think I think based on what I saw, I think they're the best team in the country.
- 15:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we talked about early on um that Georgia's offense may need to carry them for a little while, but I didn't expect this.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: And their tight end group, you're right.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, we talked last week, they have like three NFL tight ends ready to go to the NFL and rip it up.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: And that those guys were just beasting people.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: They were they were gazelles that weighed 250 pounds.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: That one that one guy, Darnell Washington, looks like Shaquille O'Neal playing football.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: He is a huge human being.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: It is ridiculous.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know how I've good luck anybody um guarding that guy uh this season.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be have your hands full with that.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Uh what do you got?
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Give me one of your yeah.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: I I was gonna agree with you, but it this leads me right into my sort of hot take as I'm I'm punting on on the Pac-12, specifically Utah and Oregon.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: Um I don't know.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: I don't know what happened.
- 16:29SPEAKER_03: I guess maybe, I mean, I'm right there with everybody else.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: I I I thought Utah was gonna be super strong that they would compete for a potential playoff.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: They went and lost you know, at Florida, which is you know, that's a tough game.
- 16:42SPEAKER_03: It's a tough venue.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: The spread was was a small spread, and frankly, they were a late end zone pick away from winning that game, but they looked slow, unathletic.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: They could only run the ball.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: Um, they looked one-dimensional.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: Cameron rising left a lot to be desired and got, frankly, just outshined completely by Anthony Richardson.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: And so, yeah, I I would say the Pac-12, uh, both of those teams are pretenders to me.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: If we're talking overreactions, get out of here.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: I don't think we are.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I I you know Utah has a way to get in.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: They obviously have to run the table, win the Pac-12, and and they're probably gonna need some things to go their way.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: But I mean, right now, given that loss, that's tough.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: Cam rising throwing that interception in the end zone.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: I I understand the receiver slipped, but that was a really ill-advised throw.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: After a pretty impressive drive putting it together to get to get them there pretty quickly in pretty quick order.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, Florida looked like they were on their heels a little bit, and I kind of feel like Cam Rising kind of gave the way gave gave away the game there.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: And that's a numbers, that's a number seven team losing to a first-year first game coach um from a Florida team that lost like seven games last year.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: That wasn't that good.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: So yeah, and Utah came in, they were throwing up and cramping up in the first quarter.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: I I've been to the swamp, it is like swimming through humidity, it's terrible, it is a godforsaken snake pit, terrible place.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: Says the Volfia.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: Nobody should ever go.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: But you got to be more prepared than that.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: These guys were not ready to play, and I think quite frankly, the maybe we're overhyping them off of what they did a little bit against Ohio State last year, as good as Ohio State was.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: They hung with them, they brought everybody back this year.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: You would think they could compete and and play better than that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: It's a long season, we'll see, but ugh.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and obviously what we saw is Oregon happen.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Oregon obviously has no business playing on the field with Georgia in the game of college football.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Definitely not in week one and probably not in week 15.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: So I think they're right there.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: And Oregon's ish, one of their main issues against Georgia was the same issue they had last year.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: They are soft.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, Georgia makes a lot of people look soft, but yeah, next to them, they sure look soft.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: I think USC still got an outside shot.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: They obviously took care of business.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: USC's probably the only team at this point that I if I'm if I if I had to if I had to put my money on a horse, it would have to be uh the Trojans.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: I think that I think obviously that what they did this past week was impressive.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: Uh beat the snot out of whoever it was.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: I think it was Rice.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Um, and they're gonna score a lot of points.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: They're gonna be f they're gonna be big and strong and fast.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: And they and obviously if they to if they go 12-0, which includes that which includes Utah and Oregon and Notre Dame, uh, they could be there.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: But let's, you know, they were four and eight last year, so let's let's let's wait till they get there first.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Uh what next?
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Um, the quarterback controversy.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: This is gonna be the year of the quarterback controversy.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: And by controversy, I mean every single school is going to that has a quarterback controversy.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna talk about them.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: That quarterback is gonna lose their job and not get it back.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: We are going to see several different teams, quarterbacks, uh including really good teams, uh, switch switch uh switch quarterbacks midseason.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'll start with uh Michigan.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: Uh if I mean obviously Caden McMahon, what he did last year, leading that team to the playoff was impressive, but it seems very clear to me that JJ, it's clear to everybody that J.J.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: McCarthy is a better quarterback.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: It's just a matter of when he takes the job.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Um Clemson, uh, DJU looked okay against a bad Georgia Tech team.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: But the first half it was like seven to seven.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, they struggled mightily on offense for for that first half.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: The five-star uh Texas Gatorade play of the year, Kate Klubinet came in and and ran a flawless touchdown drive, which of course, I mean, granted, it was against Georgia Tech and a very tired Georgia Tech at the end of the game.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: So, but you you know that's just gonna add more fuel to fire.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: He's gonna lose his job.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: That's the last I can't remember a time where we had two top five teams, and I do think Michigan and Clemson are top five teams, at least they should be now, that had quarterback controversies.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: And it's not just them either.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: Oregon, I think Bo Nick, we saw what we saw Bo Nick's do Bo Nick's things.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: He's gonna lose his job to Ty Thompson, the highest rated recruit Oregon's ever had.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: He's gonna lose his job.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think uh Auburn, uh TJ Finley's target quarterback, he is not good.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: Uh Zach Alzada, although he's flawed, will take the job there.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Um, Ole Miss, Jackson Dart.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, I give you you heard uh what Lane Kiffin said.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Uh uh seems pretty clear that Altmeyer is gonna take over there.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: And um at Penn State, um uh what's his head?
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Drew Alar?
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: Is it Alair?
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Is it Alar?
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: I don't know what it is.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: He stepped in really nice, really well for Sean Clifford in that game.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: Uh in spot work, it seems like everyone's really high on him.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: My point, we're gonna hear there's always quarterback insurance every year.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: We're gonna hear more about quarterback controversies this year, and there's gonna be more teams, good teams.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: I count five teams in the top 25 currently that deals.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: All of these quarterbacks are gonna lose their job, get replaced by the new guy, and barring injury, never have their job again.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's gonna be wild.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: One of the places that we should have a quarterback controversy, but we don't.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Iowa.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Seriously, can anybody play quarterback in the city?
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Can you go?
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: How much hours really do you have left?
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: Can you get out there and sling the ball a little bit?
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: I feel like I feel like I think you could do just as good a job as anywhere.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: Uh I was uh as of that brings us to kind of our next thing as well.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: Iowa's losing uh seven to three.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry, winning seven to three in one of the uh worst football games I've ever seen.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Two safeties.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: They scored it was they scored two safeties, uh seven to three.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Um, I was gonna win multiple games this year by 10 points or less because that's what they do.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: They don't move the ball, and their defense is just unbelievable.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: Iowa has the worst defense in the power five.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: Offense.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: Worst offense.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: Offense.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, offense.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: They went there, they were outscored by their defense.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: They scored no touchdowns.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: And uh your boy, Spencer Petris, went um 1.1 QBR.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: How has he not been replaced?
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: How is there not somebody behind them that they can just say, hey, look, let's try it out.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: Let's see.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: It's gotta be better.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: It's gotta be.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: It's gotta be.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: They've they're they're so terrible on offense.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: You know, it's been but they've been this bad for so long.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: Is this like a Kirk Forens thing, the head coach?
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Like it's like what is the thing?
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Like, what's the thing that's gonna say?
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, obviously, like Iowa can do what Iowa does.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: And they can be in the Big Ten West and they can win eight, nine games, maybe ten every now and then, maybe win the division every now and then.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: But until they figure out something on offense, holy smokes, are they in trouble?
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Um, lose only scoring seven points, one field goal, and two safeties against an FCS team, like that's just inexcusable on every level.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I can't imagine being an Iowa fan right now.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: It's another way, another year of another wasted defense, historically bad offense.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, we'll keep our eyes on that.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: So between quarterbacks and defenses, uh and Iowa specifically, uh, we're we're gonna be hearing about quarterback controversies all year.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: Uh what's next?
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: What's the guy?
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: I think that UCLA will be out attended by the Little League World Series.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: They had their home opener in the Rose Bowl the other day.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: They had a record low attendance.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: They reported 27,000.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Keep in mind that the Rose Bowl can hold, I think it's 90,000 plus.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: But when you look at it, they're lying.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: There were 3,000, there were 3,000 people there.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: It was embarrassing.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: So if you go to Twitter, you'll see a clip every now and then of or you'll see a clip of UCLA's somebody panning the Rose Bowl right before kickoff with UCLA game, and it is like a desert.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: There is nobody there.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Um, of course, UCLA is getting a ton of attention.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: They're moving to the Big Ten later, and UCLA is supposed to be a pretty predominant blue chip program, and they are just not nobody's interested in supporting uh UCLA.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Granted, it was a bad opponent, granted it's hotter than heck out there, and you're cooking in the summost time, but like that that attendance is unexcusable.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's embarrassing.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: There, there's I mean, you've got Nebraska fans showing up in minus degree weather to play FBS schools, you've got you know people showing up in in in Baton Rouge and in the swamp in like pea soup humidity to play from schools.
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, it's inexcusable, it's ridiculous.
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: It's it's LA, baby.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, hopefully the Bruins, obviously, Bruins will get will discuss this their schedule will get a whole lot more interesting, opponents get more interesting.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, uh folks will turn out because um, you know, Bruins need your support.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: So get out there if you're if you're a Bruins fan listening.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: Uh take your family, take your friends, take your extended family, take everybody you know, just go watch them play some.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're gonna go ahead and use all of the reach that we have in LA to try to bolster that Bruins support.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Uh what else?
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: Oh, uh we already talked about a little bit.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Uh Anthony Richardson, I think he's going to New York City.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, you you you kind of already spoke about how about how well he played.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: He is so here's the thing about him.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: I know you hate to hate me saying this, being a Tennessee fan.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: And I'm honestly an LSU fan.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: I don't want to.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: I agree with you, man.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: He was ridiculous.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: He was ridiculous.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: Anthony Richardson is a quarterback for Florida who is just an athletic freak off the charts.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: What he can do with his feet, well, he has a massive cannon.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, he had a couple uh jaw-dropping uh highlights this past week against Utah at home in the swamp.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: And that's got he is a human highlight reel.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: Um last year he works like a more athletic Tim Tebow.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: He does look a more athletic Tim Tebow.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: It's a I don't really understand why he didn't work with Dan Mullen given he had all those same physical skills back then.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: I guess Napier just put him in.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: Well, he was hurt, he was hurt, and he had some off-the-field stuff.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: I think he's done a lot of growing up and maturing in the offseason.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Good for him because I mean he's he's gonna be uh must-watch, must-watch football pretty soon, especially in the south.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: I feel like every time he had the ball, he put it on the receiver's chest, or he was getting he was he was doing a run where he already lost two people and was falling forward for like five yards.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Like he is a lot.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: He is fast and big and big and strong and he's only gonna get better.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: That's the scary thing, is that that was basically his coming out party.
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, people knew about him.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: He he was on NFL draft boards, but he hadn't shown it.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: And now he's shown it, and it sucks for the rest of us.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, that is the type of guy that you look at and you say, Why can't why can't we have that?
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: Seriously.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, LSU and Tennessee could get to get to face him off this year.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: And honestly, I'm not I'm not super high key.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: The good news is I don't know how talented they are around him.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: I don't think Florida's very deep, especially um at on the O-line.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: I think you know, he's gonna have to carry them all year long, and that's tough.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: So they're probably gonna have a better year than anyone expected, but you know, they could very easily you know still drop several games because it's just it's tough to win a win by yourself.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: No, and I want to keep it in context.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: I have I have zero expectation of them really challenging Georgia or Alabama, which are still a cut above everybody else in the SEC.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: But um, I was just I guess it's hard not it was hard to not to watch him and be just be impressed.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: He won the game for them.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, if he's not on the field, if if they have a normal, just middle of the road quarterback, not amazing athlete.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think you're probably right.
- 28:17SPEAKER_03: You're probably right.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: Uh uh, what else?
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: What else he got?
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: I got one more.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: What else do we have?
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: Um oh I wanted to just punt really quickly on UNC's defense.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: They've got to be the worst defense in a on a power five school.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, if you weren't watching, UNC pulled out a complete nail biter against Appalachian State, one of the craziest games of the weekend.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: Final score was 63 to 61.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: Appalachian State put up 40, 4-0, 40 points in the fourth quarter and should have won that game, or should have at least extended it even further uh on a on a on a narrow miss.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: Uh and it's just crazy.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: Um especially looking at at their head coach with a defensive background with under Mac Brown.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: It's it's it's it's mind bottling.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Now I know that game was in boon, obviously.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: And then you know, App State was shown out and ready to play.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: So they then they probably threw everything they had at UNC.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Uh for those of you doing math at home, that's a field goal a minute.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: That's like nearly three points a minute for the fourth quarter, 40 points, just unbelievable.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: But I I kept checking my phone and I was like, they scored again.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, they scored again.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's not over, they scored again.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: It just never ended.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: I don't know what defense they were or weren't calling on really on either side of the ball.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Appstate, upstate for for who they are, they're they're not terrible on defense either.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Um that was like that was like an arena league game.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: I guess remember those?
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: It's just wild.
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that was a crazy one.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: And just for those of you keeping track, your tar Hill fans at home, uh, Drake May leads the country in uh passing after that game with all the offense that put up.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: Uh little little UNC nugget, they've got Georgia State coming up.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: They're only seven and a half point favorites, and they're going to Georgia State.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: So they're playing at Appalachian State and then at Georgia State.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: So whoever is the UNC athletic director, what are you doing?
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: Guy, come on, guy.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: This could this gonna be a common theme for the Mike Blitz is uh ridiculing uh athletic directors like seven years after the when you yeah, when you schedule these these lose-lose situations, I mean, when's the last time LSU went to Louisiana Tech?
- 30:24SPEAKER_03: Tell me that.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: Never yeah, that would be never, Bob.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, so UNC defense got some things to work on, and then that might have been.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: But helping, I mean, Drake May is he played really well.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: This is two weeks in a row for him now, so we'll see.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, if UNC, maybe they're gonna be this offensive fireman.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: Maybe that is really good news because as you know, replacing Sam Howell was no short task, and he looks every bit up to the task.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: Maybe the maybe UNC, this is gonna drive UNC fans crazy.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: Maybe UNC 2022 is the Wake Forest of 2021.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Ooh.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: There's a spicy take for you.
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: Except Sam Hartman is back.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Sam Hartman's back.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: My favorite quarterback is back.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: GoDeeks.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: GoDeeks.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, just a quick fill-in.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: So uh Sam Hartman, the uh uh all ACC, uh really phenomenal quarterback, really the guy the the engine, the offense of that that was all of Wake Forest's hot entire team.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, he was um uh he was he'd be ruled out of football indefinitely.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Uh this past weekend, he had a successful uh blood clot removal surgery, and he is cleared to go.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: He gets to play football again, which is a huge boost to the Wake Forest demon deacons.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: Mike and I talked about this a couple weeks ago on the show.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: They don't go anywhere without him.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: I just I recognize they've they've made some upgrades around the team.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: They still have playmakers, but Sam Hartman is the heart and soul, and far and away the best talent on that team.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: So it's also big for the ACC, quite frankly, because the ACC is looking a little bit rough after the after week one, and that gives them another team that could could make some waves this year.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: And they are ranked top 25, as they should be, given what they've done and given what they've returned.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: As they should be with Hartman.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: With Sam Hartman, absolutely.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: So uh back on the DEKES train, is what I'm saying.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: Go DEKES, baby.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: Go DEKES.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: Go DEKES.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, last reaction of last week.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: I think it's last one.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Here we go.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: JMU, I think, um I'm but I think I say I'm pretty sure the best team in the state of Virginia, which is going to drive our Virginia fans bonkers.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: I can't even say that.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: So so so here's the thing.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: So obviously they're they're they're competing with Virginia Tech and Virginia for that title.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: Obviously, those are the two teams that have always been the best two teams in Virginia.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: Well, ODU's undefeated in the state this year.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: ODU's also undefeated, plays a lower level, but correct.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: JMU beat the absolute breaks off of uh Middle Tennessee State.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: I think the score was 44 to 7, uh, just a shellacking.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: And they're gonna have a chance to prove it.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Listen to their schedule at App State, at Arkansas State, at Georgia Southern, at Louisville, versus Coastal, versus Georgia State.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: They've got some they've got some games on there.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Here's my question for you.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Uh let's say let's say we'll talk about Virginia here in a second.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: Let's say Virginia finishes uh 7-5.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: Would you rather would you rather have a 7-5 UVA or say a 10-2 JMU in the Sun Belt?
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: Um, that's tough.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: It depends on uh UVA's victories, who they who they beat.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: Um I think UVA is a a good team this year, and and I I would I would still take them over JMU.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you might be right.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: I'm just saying, especially at Scott Stadium, because we know how rowdy that place gets.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: So I obviously this again, this is kind of a rapid overreactions.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: We're gonna find this out very quickly.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Really, we still have a lot to learn about all the Virginia schools.
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: JMU um has has a stiff test in two weeks where they go to they go, they're gonna be playing at Boone, which is what UNC just did.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Um, if they win that game, then yeah, we're talking about a JMU team, which I actually would take over UVA, but let's let's get there first.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and Appalachian State's got Texas AM this weekend.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: So we'll see if they're if they if they're really that good on offense.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: So those are your four kind of week zero review reactions.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: Uh lots of stuff happening.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: Really was an explosive week.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: Started out, started Thursday with uh Purdue, Penn State, and really uh didn't stop until Sunday night, LSU Florida State, which we'll talk about in a little bit.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: Um obviously Clemson played on Monday, but all all week, all weekend, it was awesome college football.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Um can week two repeat the magic that we saw in week one?
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: Unfortunately not.
- 34:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, week one had we had football every day, and there were a lot of good matchups.
- 34:30SPEAKER_03: There's a couple good matchups this weekend, but um the slate definitely is a little bit uh sleepier than it was last week.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: It was, and it also we also just had we so many of those games were lightning in a bottle.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: The Purdue Penn State was a classic, App UNC was classic, Florida State.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: Backyard Brawl.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: Backyard Brawl was an amazing game.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: Um, that could happen again, and hopefully it does happen again.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: But we between the better matchups, uh, that was week two is a little bit thinner.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: There are a lot of giant spreads out there this week.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: There are a lot of giant spreads out there.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna talk a little bit about a couple games in week two uh that you've probably already heard about a little bit, and we're just kind of we're gonna work through them, things we would watch.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, let's start with uh number one Alabama Crimson Tide uh going to Austin, playing the Texas Longhorns.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: This is at noon on Fox.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Uh the the spread the spread is currently um Alabama minus 20.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: Um now we're only talking about this game because let's face it, Texas is less just fun to talk about.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but Alabama is going to beat the brakes off of this Texas squad.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't think there are many people who see it any other way.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: Um I think Saban, he's what, 25 and 2?
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: 25, he's lost what twice to former assistants, something like that.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, Sarkeesian being a former assistant.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: I don't think this is this is the the game that really puts a big dent in that record.
- 35:53SPEAKER_03: Um they've got some firepower, but I just don't think they're gonna hang around for long.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: I think it's gonna it's gonna be pretty bloody, pretty brutal.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: Um how can Texas hang in there?
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: You tell me.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: Bijan Robinson, the all-American running back, they're gonna get he's he's got to be a big feature.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: They're gonna he's got to figure out he's gonna have to figure out a way to run the ball well so Quinn Ewers can have a shot.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: Um, the weather is gonna be brutal.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: Uh hopefully those boys use that Texas.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: It's a noon kickoff.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: It's a noon kickoff.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: So maybe a sleepy Bama rolling in there.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: Maybe a sleepy Bama, maybe maybe the Texas crowd gets alive and interesting.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I'll I mean the things I like about Texas, about about Texas in this matchup, the game is being played in Texas.
- 36:37unknown: B.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: John Robinson is the best running back in the country.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: He plays for Texas.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: That's really nice.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: Um, they have a lot of talent on their team.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: Texas is always recruited well.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: In general.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: In general.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: Other than those three things, it's hard for me to see.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's hard for me to get that excited about Texas matchup.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: So, what how do they do that?
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: They run the ball like crazy with Bijan Robinson and all those other superstar talent, five stars that came from somewhere that that tech that Texas has on their roster and they've got pockets of guys, they all have to have their coming out party on Saturday.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: Um, Quinn Ewers has to do it.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Um uh uh Holden has to do it.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: There, it's not Holden.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: Uh Jay Sanders has to do it.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: There has to be a number of guys that are just gonna play out their mind.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're gonna need some breaks.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't think that they're gonna be able to bully them up front.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: And and I don't think B.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: John Robinson's gonna have a have a day just straight up running the ball up the middle.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: Um, Bama's front seven is just ridiculous.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: They're gonna have to do some creative things.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, Sarkeesian, if you know, one thing we'll say about about Texas is, you know, he knows how to call a game.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: I'm sure he he has some things dialed up and they're gonna have to take some risks uh against some blitzes and some things.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: They're gonna have to um put the ball in Quinuer's hands a little bit, maybe take some shots deep, maybe a trick play or two.
- 37:59SPEAKER_03: Um well-timed screens are gonna be big if they can hit them at the right times and you know, put the ball in Dijon Robinson's Robinson's hands during um, you know, against a big blitz, um, those can pop off for big chunks and really alleviate some pressure uh from them having to string together long drives.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: And that's just one side of the ball.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: I have no idea how Texas is gonna deal with Bryce Young.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, they won't.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're just not just not gonna have it.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: They won't.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: So what's a realistic victory for Texas like?
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: That'd be covering, right?
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: Be keeping it within three scores.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's neither of us are you neither of us are realistically considering any possibility Alabama loses this game.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: But so what's what is a win for Texas?
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: Just being competitive?
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I think I think it's the uh you look at the Notre Dame Ohio State game, and that's that's the Texas game plan.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's exactly it's it's almost the same scenario.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: Push that push them late into the game, keep it close.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: If it gets away at the end, so be it, which it probably will.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, play tight defense, run the ball as best you can, and just hold on for dear life when Bryce Young and Alabama offense has the ball.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, maybe a tip pass or two with the the line, maybe a fumble, maybe a yeah.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: That's one of the things that you can that you've seen early on across the country is you know, in these early matchups, teams can come in a little sloppy, especially on the road.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: And, you know, a couple muffed punts, um, you know, a couple blocked kicks, a couple, you know, bounces of the ball goes your way, and all of a sudden it's a game in the third or fourth quarter, and then that really, you know, that home field advantage can really come into play.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: And then, you know, you really can have a shot.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: Things become a whole lot more equal after three quarters when you're looking up at a one-score game.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: Sure, sure, sure.
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: All right, let's move.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: Luckily, that game's at noon, so it'll be over quickly.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: So we don't have to wait around all that, but let's keep it rolling because we're talking way too much about a game that let's in all honesty probably won't be a game.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Uh moving on, we've got uh this is that this is a I think it's gonna be a great game.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: Number nine, Baylor Bears, uh facing a number one number 21 BYU Cougars.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, this is in LaVelle Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: This game is at 10:15 Eastern.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: It's a night game.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: Drink some coffee, dog.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Better be up late for this one.
- 40:07SPEAKER_02: Uh Baylor is a three-point dog.
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: They're a top 10 team going number 21 uh BYU.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: They are a three-point dog, three point three-point dog.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: Uh it's this is gonna be this is gonna be a great game.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think it it's gonna be a close game.
- 40:24SPEAKER_03: I like Baylor um for for a lot of reasons, uh, but mainly just for their physicality.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: I think they're gonna be able to run the ball.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: The one thing that does worry me, uh, it is in Provo.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: It's a late game, and that is a tough place to play.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: BYU's solid, they're coached well.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: Um, so I am expecting it to be a close game.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: I do like Baylor, um, but I'm interested to see how it plays out.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, I can really see it going either way.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: But if you looked awesome last week, granted, it was playing South Florida, who's in a full rebuild, but Jaron Hall looked like a stud.
- 40:57SPEAKER_02: There are another athlete who can who can do things with his legs and his arm.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: Uh Brandon Walker, Barcelona, thinks it thinks expects uh BYU to go 12 and 0 this year, including a beatdown in Baylor, which I think is pretty bold.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, I still think, as everybody knows who listens, Pod, pretty bullish on Baylor.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: Off the defensive line, bring a ton back, which are gonna be tough.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: And off the defensive line do tend to travel on the road.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, this is one of those games early matchup, away up in the mountains, low point score, late at night.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I anything could happen.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Anything could happen in this game.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: I, you know, I really I I'm I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna pick Baylor just because I'm I'm I've I have every reason to believe in error in Dave Aranda until he tells me not to.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: That's what I know better.
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: Good quarterback play.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Uh they're gonna be better than BYU in the offense and defensive line, I think.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: Um that's gonna show in Provo.
- 41:48SPEAKER_02: But uh BYU can score, and then they're gonna they're gonna score a lot.
- 41:51SPEAKER_02: And obviously, Provo's a tough place to play.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, and then talent isn't everything, but Baylor is the more talented team across the board.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: They've recruited better, they've you know, they've got a lot of returning production from last year.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: And last year they they put a pretty good beatdown on BYU, and that's what gives me confidence, even though, like I said, you know, I think this is another game where the home home field advantage is is a great equalizer.
- 42:15SPEAKER_03: But give me what Bayl Baylor did last year um as an example, and you know, I think if they do that again, it's closer, a lot closer, but they they edge it out.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be a good one.
- 42:29SPEAKER_02: I will stay awake from this one.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: This will be my first chance to see uh see the 22-22 Baylor Bears, which I am really excited about.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited, I'm really excited for that one.
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: So uh 1015 Eastern Time, BYU.
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: I wish just schedule an earlier game.
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: Dang, come on.
- 42:43SPEAKER_02: I know, I know.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: The thing is, if BYU wins this game, I mean, look at the rest of their schedule.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: They got Notre Dame, they've got Arkansas, uh I don't I mean, I'll Stanford, Wyoming.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't think it's that crazy that if they do go 12-0, they could be the party crasher.
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: I mean I would love that.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, I would.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: I would I would love that.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: I think they deserve they would deserve it.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean that's that's really my point.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: If they if BYU was the team to go 12 and 0, that they would be the non-power five, they would be the Cincinnati of last year.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: Um and just going back to our previous conversation, one of the things that I I do kind of like about the new playoff format is you will get a non-power five conference champion in there.
- 43:25SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: Almost by default.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: One of the stipulations, one of the stipulations of the deal is so the uh uh of the 12 seats, uh five of them go to uh the the power five champ uh conference championships, and the sixth one goes to the highest rated G five.
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: So every year we will see at least one G5 team.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: Now BYU is independent, so they're so they're treated differently, kind of like Notre Dame.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: But if they go 12 and 0, they're gonna be the top four this year.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: They're gonna be the top four this year.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: If they beat if they beat Baylor, they go to at Notre Dame in week five and win that game.
- 43:56SPEAKER_03: Uh Arkansas goes to Provo, too.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: So I mean, it pretty even though they've got a tough schedule, it kind of lines up pretty well for them.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: Um, if BYU, if BYU gets a win here, Notre Dame and Arkansas.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, we might be talking about BYU in the playoffs, which would be just good stuff.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: Good stuff.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: Uh moving on.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, probably the best matchup of the week, maybe.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Well, there's one or two.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: Uh number 20, uh Kentucky Wildcats.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, number 12, Florida Gators.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: We get to see Anthony Richardson again.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, this one is uh 7 o'clock Eastern Time.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: Uh Florida is a six point favorite at home at the swamp.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, 7 o'clock um SEC East.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: Mike, I know you know both of these teams.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: Well.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: Here's some thoughts.
- 44:41SPEAKER_03: I do.
- 44:41SPEAKER_03: And this game is a huge game.
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: I didn't even coming into this season before Anthony Richardson became Anthony Richardson over the weekend.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: This was one that I kind of I mean, it was it's always going to be a tough game.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: Um Kentucky's fared well against Florida as of late.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: Uh they've kind of they've I think they've split the series in the last four years.
- 45:06SPEAKER_03: Um and so that was you know, the swamp's a tough place to play, but I like Florida a lot.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: Um Kentucky is without Chris Rodriguez, who's you know an all SEC caliber back.
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: Their backup running back got banged up a little bit, they're a little bit thin.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: There, this is gonna be um all on Will Levis.
- 45:28SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be all on the quarterback, and that's a tough task.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: And when you compare, you know, if you're gonna say, okay, it's all on him or it's all on Anthony Richardson, I'm taking Anthony Richardson at home.
- 45:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's I mean, to me, that's that's a no-brainer.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, both of them are NFL caliber quarterbacks, but that's I like the home crowd.
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: That's the thing we're gonna hear about all week this week is uh, because and it's true, and this was true months and months ago, is Will Levis and Anthony Richardson are both physically exactly what you want of course, both big, strong, athletic kids with huge arms.
- 46:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, I mean, you know, for both of them, it's been a question of like can they put together on the field?
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: Um, and obviously, Florida did that on big time against Utah.
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: This is gonna be Anthony Richardson's next real task because Florida's on Florida nor uh Kentucky are slashes on defense, but I totally agree with you.
- 46:17SPEAKER_02: All focus is gonna be on these two and these NFL quarterbacks.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: This is gonna be the game in a month or two from now when Todd McShay and Mel Kuyper are talking about their whole their top 25 way too early, 2023.
- 46:29SPEAKER_02: They're gonna be showing highlights of this game because these are two names, Levis and Richardson, that are gonna be on the tops of a lot of people's quarterback boards going.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and they do it in very different ways.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: Um, Levis is pretty scrappy.
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's got a pretty good arm, but he plays a lot like um, I don't know, I'm trying to think of a good comparison.
- 46:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, almost like Ben Rothesberger.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: Like he can make some plays with his feet, he's tough, but he's not gonna burn you down the field.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: He's gonna put his shoulder down.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's just a hard-nosed player.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: He's got a good arm, he is a big guy.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: Anthony Richardson can can do it all, but we haven't seen him had to do have to carry a team with his arm yet.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, against Utah, I mean, they did most of their damage on the ground.
- 47:12SPEAKER_03: He went for, I think, over 100 yards rushing.
- 47:15SPEAKER_03: They had almost 300 yards rushing total, and they've got a good stable of backs.
- 47:19SPEAKER_03: Um, Montreal Johnson went for 75.
- 47:21SPEAKER_03: Trevor Etienne, which is Travis Etienne's brother, I think.
- 47:24SPEAKER_03: He went for 64.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: Interesting.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: He looked electric.
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: He touched the ball only a few times, and I mean, he just pops on screen.
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, so they're gonna attack on the ground.
- 47:34SPEAKER_03: I think Kentucky's gonna have to do it through the air.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: I just don't think they have the the playmakers on the outside.
- 47:40SPEAKER_02: That's reasonable.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't I don't I don't have a good reel next.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: I just I don't know.
- 47:44SPEAKER_02: I other than Levis and Richardson, I haven't seen enough out of either of these teams.
- 47:48SPEAKER_02: I don't think there's enough proven playmakers on either side.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: This is one of those week this this is gonna be one of those games, because it's so early in the season, week two, that we're gonna see a lot of the support really emerge.
- 47:58SPEAKER_02: You know, who are gonna be those guys flying around for Kentucky and Florida on both sides of the ball and on the outside, like who's who are gonna be the playmakers?
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: Um, and I just I really don't know.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, well, Kentucky really needs Chris Rodriguez back.
- 48:12SPEAKER_03: Yes, they do.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: And and he's he's not gonna be there this game, but and this game won't tell us a ton from like a national standpoint because we don't know how good Florida really is, because we don't know how good Utah really is.
- 48:26SPEAKER_02: Um we're not really good anybody as but it wasn't long ago when Texas beat Notre Dame, and then they we all thought they were back and then they lost six straight or whatever it was.
- 48:34SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 48:34SPEAKER_03: And so think about this.
- 48:35SPEAKER_03: So Utah threw an interception on the last play of the game, and therefore Florida is now ranked 12th in the country.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: Had that play gone the other way, Florida is god to be Florida is still unranked if if that play goes the other way.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and they're and they're and they're they have no wins and they're unranked.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: Instead, that play goes their way.
- 48:54SPEAKER_03: And you know, I'm I'm simplifying things obviously, but just to put it in perspective, we're talking about one play at on the you know the last 15 seconds of the game, and Florida's a top 12, top 15 team.
- 49:05SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 49:06SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna take Florida win, but I like Kentucky to cover.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: I think it's gonna be a close game.
- 49:09SPEAKER_02: I really don't know who's gonna come out ahead because I haven't seen enough from either team to really convince myself that one's heads and shoulders better.
- 49:15SPEAKER_02: Obviously, playing in the swap is a huge problem.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: It is a tough place to win.
- 49:19SPEAKER_02: I've seen LSU go there and lose enough times to know that.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: Um, so uh yeah, I think I think I think for for the win, give me Florida for the points, though.
- 49:28SPEAKER_02: I I still have a lot of I still have some confidence with Will Levis.
- 49:31SPEAKER_02: I'll take the six points.
- 49:32SPEAKER_02: We'll just see what happens.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a good call.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: This could go either way.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: All right, let's uh let's move on to Homer Time.
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: We got some interesting things to do homer time.
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: So before the way we do Homer Time now is we're gonna we're gonna talk about what happened last week a little bit with this team, and then we're gonna jump in to this coming week to give you a little bit more context about each team.
- 49:49SPEAKER_02: Let's start with uh the best game, and this actually might be the best game of the whole college football week.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: Your 24th ranked Tennessee Volunteers uh playing number 17 ranked Pittsburgh Panthers in Acreshire Stadium?
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: Heinz, the old Heinzfield.
- 50:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, being played in Heinzfield.
- 50:10SPEAKER_02: Acreshire Stadium, Heinzfield, uh 330 ABC.
- 50:14SPEAKER_02: ABC obviously realizes it's the headline game.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, the spread is currently Tennessee minus six.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, you gotta be loving.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: You must be feeling good about that love.
- 50:21SPEAKER_02: Uh well, go ahead.
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: You tell me well, tell me about ball state first, quickly.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: Uh ball state, not not much to report.
- 50:28SPEAKER_03: Um, Vols took care of business.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: You know, they got a lot of guys in, they played around with their lineups, they they got a lot of action for some freshmen, you know, a few guys popped.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: Everybody took care of business.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: Not, you know, it was a blowout.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: It was fun.
- 50:43SPEAKER_03: It was what you want to see out of that game.
- 50:45SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 50:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, so Tennessee Pitt, six points.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, what what happened they they played last year and Pitt and Tennessee was ahead and they and they lost that game late, I think.
- 50:55SPEAKER_02: Is that what I know?
- 50:56SPEAKER_02: Pitt won.
- 50:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, I mean, where how's that stack up with this game?
- 50:59SPEAKER_02: What do you got for me?
- 51:01SPEAKER_03: It's a it's such a completely different game for a lot of reasons.
- 51:04SPEAKER_03: So last year, obviously, we you know, we've got our first year head coach and Josh Heipel.
- 51:09SPEAKER_03: We're still figuring out what our lineup is.
- 51:11SPEAKER_03: It's another early season game last year.
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: Um, we start um Joe Milton at quarterback.
- 51:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, he gets injured, and Hindenhooker, our now quarterback, takes over um kind of mid-game and plays well.
- 51:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, we were also without um two of our top running backs last year.
- 51:27SPEAKER_03: A lot of guys banged up, and uh, we had no go-to wide receiver.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: Um, one of the now should be household names, and Cedric Tillman um was not there.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: Um Velas Jones Jr., who's now in the NFL, uh, hadn't emerged yet.
- 51:43SPEAKER_03: And so we were still finding our way uh and really should have won that game.
- 51:46SPEAKER_03: Um, and that's with Jordan Addison at Pitt and Kenny Pickett at Pitt, who are both gone now, both NFL talents.
- 51:52SPEAKER_03: Mark Whipple.
- 51:53SPEAKER_03: And so, yeah, I, you know, fast forward a year, um, you're looking at two very, very different teams heading, I think, in very, very different directions.
- 52:03SPEAKER_03: Pitt won the ACC last year.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: We talked about them a ton.
- 52:06SPEAKER_03: Um, Slovis is a good replacement at quarterback.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: He's solid, he looked good against West Virginia.
- 52:11SPEAKER_03: Um Pat Narduzzi wants to run the football.
- 52:14SPEAKER_03: He wants to play smash mouth, he wants to play old school.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: He fired the offensive coordinator last year and replaced him because their offense was too good, I guess.
- 52:23SPEAKER_03: Uh, and they're slowing it down, they're playing super slow.
- 52:26SPEAKER_03: Um, if I'm a big Pitt fan, I'm worried that we couldn't run the ball against West Virginia because their offense is gonna go as the as the running back goes.
- 52:38SPEAKER_03: They were lucky to get out of the backyard brawl with a win, and I don't think they have the horses to hang with Tennessee's offense.
- 52:48SPEAKER_02: Tennessee, so the over-under is uh 66 points.
- 52:51SPEAKER_02: So you're I mean, Tennessee.
- 52:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, Pitt's got Pitt's obviously a world's better defensive ball state, but you're you're not anticipating Tennessee having much trouble moving the ball is what it sounds like.
- 53:01SPEAKER_03: No, no, I I really don't think so.
- 53:03SPEAKER_03: Um Pitt couldn't stop West Virginia's run game.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: West Virginia put up 200 yards rushing.
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: Um that many.
- 53:09SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 53:10SPEAKER_03: And West Virginia had an over-under coming into this year uh via Vegas at 5.5.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: So nobody, I mean, I don't know how good West Virginia is, but all we do know is nobody thinks they're supposed to be that good at this point.
- 53:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:24SPEAKER_03: Um Pitt was lucky to win that game.
- 53:27SPEAKER_03: I just think this is kind of a perfect storm for the Vols, even though my heart tells me don't get your hopes up.
- 53:33SPEAKER_03: I just I just my head tells me this should, I mean, and maybe it'll be a little bit closer, but I think two scores um and and a and a nice win for the vols.
- 53:43SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: So for me as an outsider, you know, I'm not found the vols as close as you are.
- 53:47SPEAKER_02: For me, the question is is like how much better did your defense get bet get from I mean, how much better was your defense last year?
- 53:55SPEAKER_02: This year, last year Tennessee's defense was bad, categorically bad.
- 53:58SPEAKER_02: I think you would agree.
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, this year, obviously, handled ball state, holding the three points or whatever, one garbage touchdown, which is good, but like now we're really gonna kind of find out.
- 54:07SPEAKER_02: And that's what it is for me.
- 54:08SPEAKER_02: I Tennessee's offense, I'm expecting to be as good, maybe even a little bit better than last year's.
- 54:14SPEAKER_02: No, last year's offense was outstanding.
- 54:15SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't think you'd be upset if you had an offense just as good as you had last year by any means.
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, so I don't we haven't seen that.
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: That's the thing that gives me any hesitation from jumping on the same wagon you're jumping on and and and seeing Tennessee win this game in cover, just despite despite the fact that it's at Ben Routhisburger Stadium or whatever it's called now, uh in Spitzburg.
- 54:36SPEAKER_02: Um I I want to see uh it would be if Tennessee, this is this is gonna be the pivot game for Tennessee, I think.
- 54:43SPEAKER_02: This we're gonna learn so much about Tennessee.
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: If Tennessee's defense, if they're front-seven, if they're secondary, if they're flying the ball, if they're if they're not no blown coverages, they're making open field tackles like they should, and if they play sound defense this year, I mean Tennessee has a clear path to number two in the in the east, in despite Anthony Richardson's uh big success in week one.
- 55:02SPEAKER_02: Um, if their defense is bad again, bad again, then I don't even know it's it's gonna be, you know, could the thing could go sideways.
- 55:10SPEAKER_03: I would agree with you.
- 55:11SPEAKER_03: Um our secondary is still a huge question mark.
- 55:15SPEAKER_03: We've got some talent there, but um, you know, we don't know who's gonna emerge as the guys you can trust and and which one of you know who's the cream of the crop and how good are they?
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: But I don't think Pitt has has the guys on the outside that are really gonna challenge the secondary.
- 55:32SPEAKER_03: You know, they're gonna be forced to make some plays.
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: I don't even think that's Pitt's game plan going in to their detriment.
- 55:38SPEAKER_03: I think they wanna slow it down and and they want to be conservative and they want to eat clock.
- 55:43SPEAKER_03: I just don't think that that's gonna work.
- 55:45SPEAKER_03: I think Tennessee's gonna run fast and make some big plays, and Pitt's gonna be playing from behind.
- 55:51SPEAKER_03: They're not gonna have the luxury to do that.
- 55:53SPEAKER_02: I thought Pitt would play better against West Virginia, and I think you're right.
- 55:55SPEAKER_02: I think you're I think you're pegged West Virginia correctly.
- 55:57SPEAKER_02: Um JC Daniels was clearly uh was clearly a spark plug.
- 56:00SPEAKER_02: And um, but five and a half, they they were given they Vegas thought five and a half wins for a reason.
- 56:05SPEAKER_02: So Pitt beating them doesn't mean a whole lot to me either.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: I don't really understand what Narduzzi's logic is with with his getting away from Whipple and their vertical attack, which honestly is exactly the the way I would probably attack Tennessee if I were him.
- 56:18SPEAKER_02: And maybe he will, maybe Keaton Slovis will be able to do that.
- 56:20SPEAKER_02: Um, but no, I'm with you.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna I'm gonna take the vols here.
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna take I'm gonna take the vols to cover.
- 56:25SPEAKER_02: I just if I'm wrong, if we're having this conversation next week and we're wrong, I'm wrong and we're wrong, it's because Tennessee's defense is not where we thought that were with where we hoped they would be.
- 56:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, or um Tennessee gets forced that Pitts front seven forces a lot of turnovers.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: Um Tennessee's O-line doesn't hold up.
- 56:44SPEAKER_03: Maybe there's some mishandled snaps, some some strip sacks.
- 56:47SPEAKER_03: Um, that would be almost the worst scenario for me.
- 56:51SPEAKER_03: Some chaos.
- 56:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 56:53SPEAKER_02: It could happen.
- 56:53SPEAKER_02: It's gonna it's it's it's a game on the road, and they're obviously gonna be fired up.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, especially at we we saw we saw the atmosphere.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, this is Pitt is one of the few teams that can go to a non-college stadium.
- 57:06SPEAKER_02: They play this where the Steelers play, and they make that place pretty, pretty rowdy.
- 57:10SPEAKER_02: You know, a lot of and a lot of college teams don't have their own stadium, they play at NFL stadiums.
- 57:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, pit does a good job there.
- 57:15SPEAKER_02: I'm expecting it to be pretty darn hostile for the Calls.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: I agree with you a little bit.
- 57:20SPEAKER_03: Last year I watched Pitt a lot, and there were a ton of games where that place was completely void of energy and excitement.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: That Pittsburgh is a pro town.
- 57:29SPEAKER_03: I think they've jumped on the Pitt bandwagon a little bit, and I think we'll see a good crowd.
- 57:34SPEAKER_03: Um, but generally speaking, no.
- 57:39SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 57:40SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.
- 57:41SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, we will see.
- 57:43SPEAKER_02: We will see.
- 57:44SPEAKER_02: Uh they they well, I mean, you know, the big reason I'm saying that's basically what I saw last Thursday night.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: I realized it was opening, I realized it was opening week of calling.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: Backyard brawl is historically backyard brawl, historic game, a game Pitt had to win, and they turned out for that.
- 57:57SPEAKER_02: But I think, but I mean, like if you're a Pitt fan and you're looking ahead, you're seeing you see the vols coming, you see that offense coming.
- 58:02SPEAKER_02: The fact that you see that you're a six-point dog, you're telling me they're not gonna get up for you guys.
- 58:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 58:07SPEAKER_03: Well, Narduzzi's already playing that card.
- 58:09SPEAKER_03: Every chance, every microphone he speaks into.
- 58:12SPEAKER_03: He called the ACC, oh, we're just the Pee-wee league, we can't compete with the big boys.
- 58:16SPEAKER_03: He's playing the underdog, super hard.
- 58:19SPEAKER_02: He's he's he's looking for bulletorn bulletin board material.
- 58:22SPEAKER_02: Yes, he knows what he's doing.
- 58:23SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 58:24SPEAKER_02: Um I'll take the volve's minus six, but we'll see what happens.
- 58:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, all right, let's let's keep it rolling.
- 58:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, next uh homer time, uh LSU Tigers.
- 58:33SPEAKER_02: The LSU Tigers are hosting the Southern Jaguars, also in uh Baton Rouge.
- 58:39SPEAKER_02: Um, that game is at uh 7:30 on the SEC network in Tiger Stadium.
- 58:44SPEAKER_02: LSU is a last I saw 47-point favorite.
- 58:49SPEAKER_02: Look, Southern isn't really a team um that's gonna compete with SEC folks.
- 58:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, this is uh this is the game that LSU should have played last week for Florida State.
- 59:01SPEAKER_02: Before we get into that, I'll stop and rewind.
- 59:05SPEAKER_02: So last week, last Sunday, uh LSU opened their season up at Florida.
- 59:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, sorry, at in New Orleans versus Florida State.
- 59:14SPEAKER_02: Essentially a home game.
- 59:15SPEAKER_02: Essentially a home game, uh, but it didn't matter.
- 59:18SPEAKER_02: LSU loses in just excruciating fashion.
- 59:22SPEAKER_02: 23-24.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: Um, a game that they were behind most of.
- 59:27SPEAKER_02: They turned the lights on the fourth quarter, could have won.
- 59:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, literally, they were one or two plays away from winning that game, could have stolen victory from the Jaws defeat if that had they a couple of things gone their way, but they did not.
- 59:38SPEAKER_02: Um, I'll just say quickly on that game.
- 59:42SPEAKER_02: You know, I Floor State was a better team.
- 59:44SPEAKER_02: They should have won that game and they did.
- 59:45SPEAKER_02: Uh, this is what we saw on Sunday out of uh out of LSU was um a brand new offensive coordinator, brand new defensive coordinator, brand new head coach, quarterback, O-line, secondary, second special teams, which were a particular nightmare.
- 59:58SPEAKER_02: Two muff punts, uh an unsportsman-like, and two black kicks, all in the same game on special teams.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_02: Just horrific special teams play.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_02: This is a rebuild.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: We are LSU is in a rebuild.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_02: And I really have a lot of faith in Brian Kelly.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_02: I really do think he's a great coach, and I think he will get us back, and he's gonna do all the things that good coaches do.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_02: And he and he has proven he has a track record of going and doing this in multiple places.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh we had 38 scholarship players in the bowl game eight months ago.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_02: People like we were a fraction of an SEC team eight months ago.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_02: We had a four-string receiver as our quarterback in that uh K-State game.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_02: So we're in rebuild mode, and I so the way we lost was ridiculous.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_02: And then if you haven't watched, go watch the highlights, but you know, that's my take on last week.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: What do you mean you were outsider?
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_03: Um I think the positives are that a lot of that stuff is pretty easy to clean up.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah when you talk about blocked kicks and muffed punts um and procedural penalties and on sportsmen likes and things like that, that's that's easy.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_03: That's nothing.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: The problem is, and the long-term fixes, um, it it just takes time to make a culture shift when you've got such a big turnover.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_03: And the reason that things didn't work under Ed O were because things weren't managed well, and and that's gonna take time, and so it's not gonna be something where the you know the switch gets flipped and all of a sudden, you know, everything comes together.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_03: But there are a lot of there are a lot of positives to take away.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: Jaden Daniels played really well in Spurs.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_03: I was really happy with him.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_03: He's my quarterback this year.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_03: I can get behind that guy.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, he played well, and Florida State's a pretty good team.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_03: Um, I I I think, you know, I don't think they're gonna compete for the ACC, but they're a respectable team, and um I think yeah, I think both the things could be true.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_02: I think I think I think you're right.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_02: I think Florida State's a solid team.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_02: I think there's a good chance they're gonna start 5-0 here in a second.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_02: Uh there, I think they're gonna get off to a pretty hot start.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_02: They uh their quarterback, Jordan Travis, played his hair on fire.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_02: I was really impressed with him.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, he was able to beat us on third down, third and longs a lot.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_02: Fine guys.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: Um, but he made some great balls.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_02: Really, I'm really impressed with him.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_02: Jaden Daniels at the same time, I was also in his first time playing for LSU, uh, new OC, new head coach, everything, did really well.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_02: The first quarter, and I also really like the adjustments we made.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_02: In the first half of football, LSU offense was ugly.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_02: In the second half, we went to some we went to some quicker stuff.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_02: Up tempo, up tempo, some two or three reads, tuck it and go type stuff.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and he had a big day.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_02: He was our entire offense, but he had he ended up having a really big day.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_02: Let it score, landed three touchdown drives in the second half.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_02: Um, I um I'm I'm glad he's our quarterback because our offensive line has some trouble.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_02: So having him the guy who can move some make things happen with his feet is gonna go a long way.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_02: The run game has to help him out.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_02: Offensive line has to help him out, but he's clearly the guy for this team right now.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_03: I think there's a lot of positives you can take away.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: It sucks to lose, um, but there's a lot of stuff that can be cleaned up.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, and it's just gonna take a little time.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_02: It was such a bizarre game.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_02: So you also if you watched the game, you also saw Mason Smith, um LSU's uh all freshman, all SEC freshman team defensive tackle, tear his ACL, just jumping up to celebrate on a random tackle.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_02: It was a non-contact soft tissue injury, just total freak thing.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_02: I watched it happen.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_02: He jumped, he did a little fist pump, came down, grabbed his knee, and he knew right away.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_02: He's like, oh no.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: Um Ali Gay, our uh uh fourth year senior defensive end, had the worst targeting penalty in the history of all targeting penalties.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_03: That was yeah, that was text.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_03: They're gonna put that in the referee's handbook and say this is targeting.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_02: That was the GOAT targeting call of all targetings.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_02: I don't even know.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_02: I have this unbelievable.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_02: So a lot of weird things just happen in that game.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_02: So, anyway, that's enough without that.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_03: So, real quick before we move on, Keishon Boute, what's what's the status right now?
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_02: All right, so Keishon Boute had a bad day.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_02: Keyshon Boute is LSU's all-American wide receiver.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_02: He's legitimately a top two or three receiver in the country.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_02: Very, very good.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_02: Um, had a just bad game.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_02: He had a bad, bad game.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_02: Went two for six for about 20 yards.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_02: He dropped two touchdown passes.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_02: One of them was in the first quarter, it was been a really tough play.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_02: The second one hit him in the hands.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_02: It was a quick slant.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_02: He wasn't even looking.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: It looked like a like a PlayStation game glitch, like your wide receiver just glitches out and the ball like hits him in the in the body, and he happened.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_03: And he's like running.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_02: And Jaden Daniels put it on him, and he just he wasn't looking.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_02: That was a touchdown.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, you could argue that uh caught it cost of the game.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_02: He got benched for a little while.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_02: He came back in the he came back in the fourth quarter, made a couple plays after the game.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, him and Malik Neighbors and Kyrene Lacey, a receiver didn't play very much.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_02: Malik Neighbors, the kid who muffed those two punts, all receivers.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_02: They deleted all of their uh uh Instagram posts with any affiliation to LSU.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_02: Uh the big thing was, oh, this is this is transfer, this is a big portal.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_02: And Kayshawn came out and said that and the coach came out and said, no, this is just a way of kind of trying to put it behind him, not big distraction.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_02: Everything is all well and good.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_02: Brian Kelly talked about today, but it was a hot topic for sure.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_02: Was Keyshawn Boutte uh being a prima donna about to leave.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_02: It sounds like it was a nothing burger, it sounds like it was gonna be fine, but the fact of the matter is our best player on the team did not show up in the game.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_02: We really needed him to.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_03: So but some of that's what I'm talking about when I'm talking about a culture change.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, you got a kid, you know, some some guys after the game blow off some steam, do some things, you know, they're they're adjusting to a new staff.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_03: You know, these are 18, 19, 20-year-old kids.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_03: Things aren't going well right now.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_03: They're getting criticized, you know.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_03: They lost.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_03: Like it's it's not a good place to be.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_03: They got to get past that.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_02: No, and the LSU message boards were absolutely on fire with all which is which is just true of any SEC team who takes a loss.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_02: Let's see a close loss.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_02: The re LSU needs a chance to counterpunch.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_02: This is gonna give it give us a lot of things.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_03: LSU fans need to slow their roll a little bit.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what what else is there?
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_02: We L we're LSU is going to get a chance to counterpunch.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_02: They're gonna they're gonna be like you said, a lot of these things are easily fixable.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_02: I expect every I expect every unit to get better.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_02: Um, the linebackers play really has to get better.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_02: I thought I thought the uh defensive line was pretty good, not as good as advertised, but pretty good.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_02: Secondary showed some real flashes, which is great because it was brand new.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_02: Um, but no, this is just it's a new team.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_02: It's a lot of mistakes.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_02: We have a long way to go.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna we're gonna be rebuilding.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_02: But that's enough.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_02: We've talked a lot about LSU Florida State.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_02: Let's let's move on.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, super quick.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, LSU hosting Southern Jaguars, cross town school, 47-point favorite.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be one of those games to try and fix some of those mistakes.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_03: Get right game.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_02: Get right game.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_02: I expect LSU to win, cover, maybe not win by 30 or 40 or 50 or 60.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, nobody cares.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_02: Nobody cares.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_02: I expect a lot of guys to get snaps.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_02: Um, this game is not gonna be watchable, so don't bother.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_02: Um uh, I just no injuries, and let's fix some problems.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_02: Let's get Brian, let's let's give Brian Kelly and his staff a chance to um get that first dub.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_02: Get those dubs, fix some mistakes.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_02: Uh cool.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_02: All right, let's move on to uh homer time stateside.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_02: Uh let's talk about uh Virginia, Illinois first.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_02: Uh one and oh UVA uh going to one in one ill uh Illinois fighting line eye.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_02: This game is at four o'clock Eastern on ESPN U.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_02: Um uh UVA is a four and a half point dog.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_02: This game is being played at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_02: Uh last week, uh UVA took took took care of business in Tony Elliott's first game, won 34-17 University of Richmond at home.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_02: Couple surpr uh couple surprising things.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_02: You want to jump in first?
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_03: No, no, continue.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_02: The first couple things that uh jump out to me right away.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_02: Uh the running game on both sides of the ball was not what I was expecting to see.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_02: I was expecting UVA to do what they've what they do really well, which is throw the ball the outside and wrack a bunch of yards and score points that way, which they certainly did.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, but both Brandon Armstrong and former walk-on running back Paris Jones going over a hundred yards.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, UVA ran the ball really, really well, which is a really, really good sign for UVA, whose main concern, I think, for the whole team is their offensive line.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_02: Um, really like to see that.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_02: Um, granted, it's University of Richmond.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_02: Granted, it's home.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_02: This is a power five team, and you're a big ten team that you're playing at them, so competition is gonna be stepped up a bit, but that was uh really promising.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_02: On the other side of the ball, uh defense secondary held up pretty well.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_02: I was really impressed with their uh pass defense, their run defense was woeful.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_02: And this is this is the this is gonna be the red flag for UVA's defense because if Richmond can run for big yards against you, and they did, uh I believe how they gave up.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_02: They gave up 170 on the ground to Richmond last last week.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_02: What's what what's the ACC teams gonna do?
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_02: What is the Big Ten team's gonna do?
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_03: Um that spells disaster this week, let alone down in the ACC schedule.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_03: Because I don't know if you've heard of a guy named Chase Brown.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he is the fighting allian eye running back, he leads the country in in rushing right now.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_03: He went off for 150 yards against Wyoming and 200 yards last week.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_03: Um, this guy is pounding the rock.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_03: And that if if if we're talking about a style matchup and we're talking, you know, college football, a lot of times it's a complete matchup game.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_03: If they're gashing you on the ground, it doesn't matter what Brendan Armstrong does.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_03: Uh and I really like UVA's offense, but if if if Illinois can just line up and and shove it down their throats, it's gonna be a long night.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_02: And the thing, and you're and Tommy DeVito, the Illinois quarterback, is no slouch either.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_02: He's looked good through two games.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_02: Um, I I mean it's too they they didn't come out with the win against Indiana.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_02: They obviously blew out Wyoming in week one.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, but he looks solid as well.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_02: So if if um if Chase Brown is going and the play action is open, that could serve that could be real problems for for UVA uh in this spot.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_02: Um I was really impressed with Paris Jones.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_02: I love the former walk-on running back.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_02: The fact they ran the ball well is really great sign, but giving up that kind of yardage against a team like Richmond is is uh is worrisome.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_02: I was really, really worried about uh UVA's run D.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_02: And I hope they can keep up this run offense because um they they could they're gonna they're gonna they're gonna score points this year, um, but they've got to stop people too.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_02: If they can't stop the run, it's gonna be a long season.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that first game may have been a little bit of an aberration for for UVA.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_03: I think this is the game, you know, just because the style difference that we talked about, they're not gonna match Illinois on the ground and they're gonna rely on Brendan Armstrong to open open the game up and hit some shots.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_03: I think that's their only chance to win, is to try to make it a little bit more of a track meet.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_03: Because if they can get out to a little bit of a lead and put some pressure on Illinois to throw the ball and maybe abandon the run a little bit, I think that's their best game plan to win.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_03: That being said, if you give me, you know, a stout um power run team at home with a short point spread like five, I've got to take, I've got to take Illinois.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_03: I didn't want to, and I I was actually leaning UVA for most of the day.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_03: Um, but I'm taking Illinois just based on that run game.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna get I'm gonna give Tony Elliott uh some love that maybe he doesn't deserve.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna I'm gonna take UVA in the points, four and a half.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_02: I think it's gonna be a close game as well.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_02: You're talking about you said track me earlier.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_02: It's funny you said that.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_02: Uh Brennan Armstrong, 10 carries, 105 yards, and a touchdown.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_02: I don't think I realized how quick he was.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_02: He's also I agree, yeah.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_02: He's all faster than I thought, and which is really good because he's gonna be doing a lot of that this year.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_02: Uh so his his ability to run the ball as well.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_02: Um I think UVA is gonna have some wrinkles for them.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna take the sign, I'm gonna take what I saw out of Paris Jones, and I'm gonna I'm going to project, hopefully, that that can turn into a successful rushing attack against Illinois.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_02: I might be woefully wrong.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_02: Uh they might get stuffed a lot in this game, might get ugly.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_02: Um, but I'm gonna take UVA in the points.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_02: Uh very cool.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_02: All right, let's move on to the last one.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_02: Uh the uh Boston College Eagles uh playing the Virginia Tech Hokies uh at 8 o'clock Eastern on the ACC network.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_02: Uh this game is Virginia Tech minus two and a half.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_02: Uh this game is being played at Lane Stadium, uh in Blacksburg, Virginia.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_02: Two and a half points, which is pretty much what Vegas gives you for uh home field advantage, which tells you that the books thinks uh these teams are pretty much even.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_02: Uh before we talk about that, you want to talk about uh what happened last week?
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_03: Um, do you mean do I want to give myself a little bit of a pat on the back?
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_03: Maybe a little bit.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_02: Maybe a little bit.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, a little bit.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_03: I'll give myself a little pat on the back.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_03: Um I will say that um that was a tough test for Virginia Tech.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_03: ODU has a lot of key pieces in place.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_03: Virginia Tech is new everywhere, first year coach, first year system.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_03: Um, and you know, it was at home at ODU.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_03: So that wasn't a huge, huge surprise.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_03: I will say I'm just not sure that that Grant Wells is the answer at quarterback for them.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_03: I'd like, I would have liked to see, I don't know, maybe see them try somebody else a series or two this game.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_03: He threw four interceptions last week.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_03: Not ideal.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_03: Virginia Tech turned the ball over five times.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_03: All that with all that said, it was still a close game that they could have won, even with all those turnovers.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_03: So that's something you can take away, right?
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_02: You know, in Q in quarter one, uh Grant well, and this and this was and my understanding is this was kind of this is what I've read about him at Marshall when before he transferred, this was kind of the thing with him there as well.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_02: He could show it in spurts, you know, he would have moments of brilliance, and then he would just have moments of just terrible bone nick style interceptions, just inexcusable.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think it's what we saw.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_02: And then in the first quarter, uh that that he threw a dime, I think about a 40 or 50 yard game.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_02: I think he I think I think the touchdown run was a 40 or 50 yard, a 20 or 30 yard scamper.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_02: He looked good.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_02: I watched this game at a brewery in downtown Richmond uh with a bunch of Virginia Tech fans.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_02: And early I liked what I saw.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_02: I thought Grant Wells was doing doing things well.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and then things kind of came off kind of came off uh came off the rails for him.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, I did like Virginia Tech's uh uh run rush attack.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_02: Uh Mr.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_02: King had 19 carries for 111 yards.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_02: This team has Brent Prize fingerprints all over it.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_02: Uh try and play tight defense, run the defense well.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_02: They just don't have the guys yet.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_02: Um, and that was clear with ODU.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_02: And and part of the guys means a quarterback who's not going to make mistakes.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_02: Five turnovers, four picks by Grant Wells.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, if they've just got a game manager last week, they win that game.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I agree with you, Keyshawn King, over 100 yards.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_03: I think part of these early season process is just figuring out who you can trust with the ball in their hands, who's your go-to guy.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_03: Um, and you know, maybe they're establishing their identity and maybe that's on the ground.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_03: If you're talking about, you know, playing BC, I think that's a good strategy.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_03: Um, Boston College has absolutely zero run game.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_03: They ran for like 29 yards against Rutgers.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_03: So, you know, if you're if you're gonna give me a tough, low-scoring defensive, you know, neither team has much of an identity.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_03: I'll go Virginia Tech.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_03: And I like Keyshawn King to have a nice day.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Virginia Tech's uh secondary played reasonably well in spots.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_02: I mean they had some breakdowns, obviously, of course, but I mean they're gonna put the they're gonna put the ball in Phil Djakovic's hands a lot.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_02: Uh last week went 23 for 41, 283, three touchdowns, two picks.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_02: Still lost to Rutgers.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_02: Uh this game is going to be played uh in Lane Stadium, first home game.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_02: First, first game for Brent Pry.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_02: I think they're gonna turn out.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_02: I think it's gonna I think Anderson's gonna be rocking.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_02: Um I I'll take the Hokies here.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_02: I'll take the Hokies uh minus two and a half to cover.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_02: I think they're gonna, I think they're good.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_02: I think you're gonna see uh some improvement.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_02: I think Grant Wells is gonna make some fewer mistakes.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_02: And frankly, I don't think Boston College is that good.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_02: I think Virginia Tech, I think Virginia Tech wins this game by seven to ten points.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_02: I like to see a little bounce back.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_02: If they play like they played in the first quarter at ODU, which they are certainly capable of doing, if they do that for four quarters, hell, even two and a half at home, BC, they're gonna get a win.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_02: So I'll I like I'll like Virginia Tech to cover this one.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, especially because it's at home.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_03: Um like I said, just going on the road, even though it's you know, even if if those at ODU and it's not a super hostile environment, um, being in the friendly confines with a new team, you know, a new head coach, new staff, communication issues, you know, you're still figuring things out.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_03: That means a lot.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_03: And BC, not very good, lost to a bad Rutgers team.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think this is a nice little pat yourself on the back, get the win, figure some more things out about your program for them.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_02: I totally agree.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, fun fact about Ruckers Ruckers started their opening drive with uh three different quarterbacks on three different plays, first, second, and third down.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, didn't get a first down, punted, uh, and still beat Boston College.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_02: So they just kind of tell you what Greg Shiano's doing up there.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_03: He, you know, you know what he's doing.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_02: He's taking a page out of Jim Harbaugh's book.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_02: Just keeping it weird.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_02: Just keeping it weird for the sake, keeping it weird.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, this is not a Rutgers podcast.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_02: Let's not talk about that anymore.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_02: Uh so yeah, um uh we'll see what happens to the hookies.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, uh both hopefully UVA Tech and LSU in Tennessee.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_02: I'm looking I'm looking for our first 4-0 weekend.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_02: I think we have an outside shot at this time.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_02: We'll see what happens.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_02: That'd be really cool.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_02: Uh I think that's it for the pod.
