- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the 21st of October. Had to work out which month it
- 0:18was for a moment. And if your life is anything
- 0:21like mine, oh boy, Christmas is clearly nowhere near here, but
- 0:25the end of the year is coming. There's all sorts of school, end
- 0:29of year things coming, exams coming, I've got an exam coming
- 0:32and you start to plan what the rest of the year is going to
- 0:35look like. And then whoa, if you're really
- 0:37forward planning, you think about next year too.
- 0:39But lots going on, lots to think about work, family, friends,
- 0:45plans for life. Which is why I'm so delighted
- 0:49that you have taken this moment to press pause and all of that.
- 0:53Put down your wheat, Bix, and let U.S.
- 0:55Open up God's Word. Actually, you can keep on any of
- 0:58your Webex if you like, and we're going to hear what God has
- 1:01in store for us today. Holy Spirit, come, let your
- 1:05truth shape us. Let your Spirit fill us.
- 1:08Let your word make us ever more like you.
- 1:13Let us read together, friends. Romans, chapter 12.
- 1:26And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to
- 1:30give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you.
- 1:34Let them be a living and holy sacrifice, the kind He will find
- 1:38acceptable. This is truly the way to worship
- 1:42Him. Don't copy the behaviour and
- 1:44customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new
- 1:48person by changing the way you think.
- 1:52Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is
- 1:55good and pleasing and perfect. Because of the privilege and
- 2:00authority God has given me. I give each of you this warning.
- 2:05Don't think you are better than you really are.
- 2:07Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves
- 2:11by the faith God has given us. But just as our bodies have many
- 2:16parts and each part has a special function, so it is with
- 2:20Christ's body. We are many parts of one body,
- 2:25and we all belong to each other. In His grace, God has given us
- 2:30different gifts for doing certain things well.
- 2:33So if God has given you the ability to prophecy, speak out
- 2:37with as much faith as God has given you.
- 2:40If your gift is serving others, serve them well.
- 2:43If you're a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage
- 2:48others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give
- 2:52generously. If God has given you leadership
- 2:55ability, take the responsibility seriously.
- 3:00And if you have a gift of showing kindness to others, do
- 3:03it gladly. Don't just pretend to love
- 3:07others, really love them. Hate what is wrong, hold tightly
- 3:11to what is good, love each other with genuine affection and take
- 3:16delight in honouring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and
- 3:22serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope.
- 3:27Be patient in trouble and keep on praying.
- 3:31When God's people are in need, be ready to help them.
- 3:35Always be eager to practise hospitality.
- 3:38Bless those who persecute you. Don't curse them, pray that God
- 3:43will bless them. Be happy with those who are
- 3:47happy and weep with those who weep.
- 3:50Live in harmony with each other. Don't be too proud to enjoy the
- 3:55company of ordinary people. And don't think you know it all.
- 4:00Never pay back evil with more evil.
- 4:03Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are
- 4:06honourable. Do all that you can to live in
- 4:09peace with everyone. Dear friends, never take
- 4:14revenge. Leave that to the righteous
- 4:16anger of God, for the scriptures say, I will take revenge.
- 4:21I will pay them back, says the Lord.
- 4:25Instead, if your enemies are hungry, feed them.
- 4:29If they are thirsty, give them something to drink.
- 4:32In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their
- 4:37heads. Don't let evil conquer you, but
- 4:42conquer evil by doing good. Oh Jesus, we need our compasses
- 4:57reset. Our compasses get tainted and
- 5:00drawn away from our true north and we look to the world around
- 5:05us for inspiration. We look to our society for what
- 5:09is important and how we ought to be and how we ought to improve
- 5:13ourselves. But today we hear you urging us
- 5:17not to copy the behaviours and customs of this world, not to
- 5:21take on the wisdom of this world has our own wisdom, but instead
- 5:26of looking around us for inspiration, that we look to you
- 5:31and we ask that you would transform us from the inside
- 5:35out. Holy Spirit, come change our
- 5:40hearts to make them more like your Father's.
- 5:43Change our thoughts to make them more like yours, and change our
- 5:49actions to make them more like those of Jesus, always in
- 5:52service and love of those around him.
- 5:57We need your help to make us different from everything, every
- 6:02voice around us that shouts so loudly at us.
- 6:06We are yours. We belong to you and your
- 6:09Kingdom. Shape us and use us in that way.
- 6:13We pray this in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
