- 0:00Chapter 7 from the book of Isaiah.
- 0:02Dear God, please be with us as we read through this chapter and
- 0:06give us insight, wisdom and understanding of the words that
- 0:11you gave the prophet Isaiah in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:16When Ahaz son of Jotham the son of Uzziah was king of Judah,
- 0:22King Resin of Aram and Pika son of Ramallah king of Israel,
- 0:30marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not
- 0:34overpower it. OK, so why did Israel attack
- 0:40Judah? The nations of the region,
- 0:43including Israel and Judah were threatened by Assyria at that
- 0:47time in order to throw off Assyrians yoke.
- 0:49Israel and Aram which is Syria today formed an alliance and
- 0:55then about 734 BC attempted to force Judah to join their
- 0:59conspiracy. King Resin of Aram or Syria
- 1:04Today and King Pika of Israel desired to replace Ahaz on
- 1:12Judah's throne with the son of Tabio in order to gain another
- 1:18ally in their anti Syrian political policy.
- 1:23So going back to scripture now the House of David was told Arum
- 1:27has allied with Ephraim. Now Ephraim's another name for
- 1:31the 10 tribes of Israel or you know, it was one of the tribes
- 1:35that was in the northern grouping of Israel.
- 1:38So the hearts of Ahaz, he's the king of Judah and his people
- 1:44were shaken as the trees of the forest are shaken by a wind.
- 1:48Then the Lord said to Isaiah, go out and your go out you and your
- 1:55son sheer Jeshub to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the
- 2:01upper pool on the road to Launderers Field.
- 2:05Say to him, be careful, keep calm and don't be afraid.
- 2:10Do not lose heart because of these two smoldering stubs of
- 2:15firewood, because the fierce anger of resin and Arum and the
- 2:21and of the son of Remalia. Arim Ephraim and Remalia's son
- 2:26have plotted your rune saying let us invade Judah.
- 2:31Let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves and make the
- 2:35son of Tabil king over it. OK, so this is, you know,
- 2:42another further separation. Of course, there's the southern
- 2:46tribe of Judah and the northern tribe 10 tribes of Israel and
- 2:50actually Judah's with Benjamin also.
- 2:53So there's two in the South and 10 in the north.
- 2:56And one of those is Ephraim. And I don't know if it's
- 2:59specifically someone from Ephraim made this alliance with
- 3:04Syria or Aram back at that time and they decided to go against
- 3:10Judah. So not only that but they are
- 3:13teeming with a foreign nation to come against Judah and take
- 3:17over. It's always been a power
- 3:19struggle when Israel separated into two nations or two kingdoms
- 3:25I guess I should say the northern Kingdom and southern
- 3:26Kingdom there were kings ruling at the same time. 1 was of the
- 3:3210 tribes and the other was for the 2 tribes and it was a power
- 3:36struggle. But most all of the kings of the
- 3:40northern tribes were evil except for Jehu who was considered evil
- 3:45but God used him to I think it was to pronounce judgement on
- 3:51Ahab who is another king on his house.
- 3:55So God used him as an instrument even though he was evil.
- 3:58So pretty much all the kings of the northern 10 tribes were evil
- 4:04and then a little bit less than half were good on the, I think
- 4:10it was 8 out of 19 or something like that or somewhere 8 out of
- 4:1418 somewhere of that on regarding Judah.
- 4:18So almost half of Judah's kings were good and half of them were
- 4:22bad. Almost not quite.
- 4:25OK, going back to Scripture yet. This is what the sovereign Lord
- 4:29says. It will not take place.
- 4:32It will not happen. For the head of Aram is
- 4:35Damascus, and the head of Damascus is only resin.
- 4:40Within 65 years, Ephraim will be too shattered to be a people.
- 4:44The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is only
- 4:49Romalia's son. If you do not stand firm in your
- 4:53faith, you will not stand at all.
- 4:55So God was warning the king of Judah, even though he was
- 4:59considered an evil king, He was saying you need to stand up to
- 5:02these to that are coming against you because God was going to be
- 5:06with them. That's why.
- 5:07But they were plotting to take Judah out and that wasn't going
- 5:11to happen because eventually, as we know, that's where Jesus came
- 5:15from, the tribe of Judah. And and so God is going to
- 5:20protect that. He, you know, intended to
- 5:23protect that. So in the study Bible, it says
- 5:26who was Ephraim? After Israel divided into the
- 5:29northern and southern kingdoms, Ephraim became the most
- 5:32prominent tribe in the north. Ephraim became another name for
- 5:36the northern Kingdom as a whole. So I guess it's used in other
- 5:40prophecies as well. OK, going back to the Scripture
- 5:44again, the Lord spoke to Ahaz. Remember, he's the king of
- 5:48Judah. Ask the Lord your God for a
- 5:50sign, whether in the deepest depths or the highest heights.
- 5:56But a has said, I will not ask. I will not put the Lord to the
- 6:00test. When I read that I I just don't
- 6:03even know why this was inserted in there.
- 6:05There's more I obviously don't understand because this was
- 6:09documented that God asked him for.
- 6:12You know, what sign do you want? What sign do you want that this
- 6:15is going to come true. But he said I'm not going to
- 6:18test the Lord, which is really interesting because all the time
- 6:21they do it normally, he just he wasn't going to do it this time.
- 6:26So it said here's a question and answer.
- 6:29Why did God want Isaiah's son to go with Isaiah?
- 6:32Isaiah was instructed to take his son with him to meet Ahaz as
- 6:36an implied sign to Judah's king. The name Sheer Jashub, a remnant
- 6:43will return. That's what his name was, is of
- 6:46course symbolic. Perhaps he had been born shortly
- 6:49after Isaiah's call and given a name expressive of the threat to
- 6:53Judah described in chapter 6, verses 11 through 13.
- 6:58There is a double. There is a double ambiguity in
- 7:01the name. It can suggest either warning or
- 7:05hope, and also either physical return from exile or spiritual
- 7:10return to God. Without a doubt, the element of
- 7:13warning is prominent in the context of Isaiah confronting
- 7:17Ahaz. Well I do see these things
- 7:19throughout the Bible that they are both a literal and a
- 7:22symbolic. They often have multiple
- 7:26meanings. So I think it a lot in the Bible
- 7:31has double meanings. What are some of the passages
- 7:35in? Then it talks about what are
- 7:37some passages in no. Why are some passages in poetic
- 7:43verse? Poetry is a vibrant medium for
- 7:46expressing a range of emotions. It was commonly used in the Old
- 7:50Testament, probably because the Hebrew language has components
- 7:53that at the very root of poetic that are at the very root of
- 7:58poetic expression. Poetry fits naturally in the
- 8:02book of Isaiah because it aptly expresses issues of life and
- 8:07death, victory and defeat, judgment and consolidation.
- 8:12Why did God offer to give Ahaz a sign?
- 8:15The threat posed by the Aramean and Israelite invaders was still
- 8:20frightening Ahaz and his advisors.
- 8:22The offer of a sign revealed God's grace and ongoing concern
- 8:28for Judah's destiny. It was as though the Lord were
- 8:31saying, What will it take to prove this to you?
- 8:35By now Ahaz must have made-up his mind to appeal to Assyria
- 8:39for military assistance. That's recorded in Second Kings
- 8:43chapter 16. And that is why with a show of
- 8:47piety, he declined to seek a sign from God.
- 8:52So I guess he already had kind of his mind made-up about that.
- 8:57So continuing in Scripture, it says that a has said he wasn't
- 9:04going to test the Lord. Then Isaiah said here, now you
- 9:08House of David, well that's House of David is the tribe of
- 9:11Judah. So here now basically Judah, is
- 9:15it not enough to try the patience of humans?
- 9:19Will you try the patience of my God also?
- 9:22Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.
- 9:27The Virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and will
- 9:31call him Emmanuel. He will be eating curds and
- 9:36honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose
- 9:39right. For before, before the boy knows
- 9:43enough to reject the wrong and choose right.
- 9:46The land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.
- 9:52The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the House
- 9:56of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away from
- 10:01Judah. He will bring the king of
- 10:05Assyria. So God is basically saying, you
- 10:11know these two are going to come against you.
- 10:12That's not going to happen. But here the the king of Assyria
- 10:18is going to be coming to you for destruction.
- 10:22So there's a couple more questions and answers which I
- 10:26will read for Let's see. Is that really OK?
- 10:35Actually I lost my place in the Bible, so I will read the last
- 10:38paragraph of Chapter 7. In that day the Lord will
- 10:42whistle for flies from the Nile Delta in Egypt, and for bees
- 10:47from the land of Assyria. They will come and settle in the
- 10:50steep ravines and in the crevices, in the rocks, on all
- 10:53the thorn bushes, and at all the water holes.
- 10:56In that day the Lord will use a razor hired from beyond the
- 11:01Euphrates River, the king of Assyria, to shave your head in
- 11:05private parts and to cut your beard.
- 11:07Also in that day a person will keep alive a young cow and two
- 11:12goats, and because of the abundance of the milk they give,
- 11:17there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will
- 11:20eat curds and honey. In that day, in every place
- 11:24there were 1000 vines worth 1000 silver shekels.
- 11:32There will only be breeders and thorns.
- 11:35Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be
- 11:39covered with breeders and thorns.
- 11:42As for all the hills once cultivated by the Hoe, you will
- 11:47no longer go there for fear of the Breeders and thorns.
- 11:51They will become places where cattle are turned loose and
- 11:55where sheep run. So that's the end of Chapter 7
- 12:00from the book of Isaiah. And there's more questions than
- 12:04answers. So why did God offer to give a
- 12:07has a sign the threat posed by the Aramean and Israelite
- 12:12invaders? I I actually read that already.
- 12:14OK, is this a prediction of the Messiah when he talks about the
- 12:17virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and will be
- 12:20called Emmanuel? Like many prophecies, this
- 12:23passage seems to have a double meaning.
- 12:25The first meaning was that a child, perhaps another son of
- 12:28Isaiah, would be born to a virgin, which could simply refer
- 12:32to a young woman during the time of Ahaz.
- 12:35By the time he was grown, Judas two enemies, Israel and Aram
- 12:41would be destroyed. The second meaning of this
- 12:44passage was later applied to the birth of the Messiah.
- 12:48The name Emmanuel means God with us became a title for the
- 12:53Messiah. What does eating Kurds and honey
- 12:56have to do with knowing right and wrong?
- 12:58Kurds and honey suggest living off the land due to the fact
- 13:02that the coming Assyrian invaded invasion of Judah would make
- 13:05farming impossible. Knowing right and wrong refers
- 13:09to the age of responsibility under the law around age 12 or
- 13:1313. Apparently then, by the time
- 13:16this boy was 12 or 13, Judah would be devastated by Assyria,
- 13:21and would also by that time the lands Judah would be devastated
- 13:26by Assyria, and also by that time the lands of Israel and
- 13:30Arum would be even more severely laid waste.
- 13:34Why are flies and bees mentioned?
- 13:37In the years that lay ahead, rulers in Judah would look to
- 13:41Assyria and Egypt for military help, but God warned that both
- 13:46were to be viewed as sources not of support, but of great danger.
- 13:50Egypt was noted for its flies, Assyria for its bees.
- 13:55Isaiah pictured the troublesome insects settling everywhere,
- 13:59therefore making it impossible to escape from foreign invasion
- 14:03of armies. It's really interesting.
- 14:05I kind of looked it up like just to see what the connection
- 14:09between flies in Egypt today and also bees for Assyria, which
- 14:16would be Turkey and Iraq and Iran.
- 14:21And it's really interesting because they they still have
- 14:28this like high level of bees and they still have the high level
- 14:32of flies. Really interesting that
- 14:34something written in the Bible in the seven hundreds BC still
- 14:39pertains to the way it is today. OK, going back, why shave the
- 14:44Israelites hair? This metaphor pictures the great
- 14:48shame Judah would experience at the hands of the Assyrian.
- 14:52Shaving pure partially, particularly of the beard, was a
- 14:57way of inflicting shame on a defeated foe.
- 15:02Who was the prophetess? Isaiah's wife?
- 15:05So this is actually the next paragraph, so we will read that
- 15:09later. But anyway, that is the end of
- 15:13Chapter 7, so we'll conclude there and start with Chapter 8
- 15:19next time.
