- 2:56Speaker 4: All right, All right, wise guy, I told you once
- 2:58Speaker 4: you couldn't come.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Up here to this room. That's right, landlord, but I
- 3:01Speaker 2: found all I needed. Well, you won't be able to
- 3:03Speaker 2: use it. After I teach you some manners. I'll teach
- 3:07Speaker 2: you to break into a respect of the room house,
- 3:09Speaker 2: leading with you all right, you want get up, Come on,
- 3:13Speaker 2: get up. Okay, I'll teach you something about cooperation, Landlord.
- 3:18Speaker 2: All I wanted to do was look this room over,
- 3:20Speaker 2: and I was nice about asking.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Got it.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I got my room, and I got a job to do.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I've been looking for Dave Stroud for a solid week,
- 3:29Speaker 2: and his trail finally let me here.
- 3:30Speaker 4: I got to look out for my rumors privacy.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Sure, sure, only Dave Stroud checked out of here this afternoon.
- 3:36Speaker 2: He's no longer a guest. Anyway. I found enoughing here
- 3:40Speaker 2: to Ostrau's taking the train to night for San Francisco.
- 3:43Speaker 2: So that winds up my lecture, and I'm happy to
- 3:45Speaker 2: say my business with you and your charming establishment. Good night, Landlord.
- 3:55Speaker 2: When I stepped out of the cheap, musty rooming house
- 3:58Speaker 2: into the warm night, I felt for the first time
- 4:00Speaker 2: in a week that I wasn't wasting my time. By
- 4:03Speaker 2: tomorrow i'd know why a quiet young guy named Dave
- 4:05Speaker 2: Stroud had suddenly dropped everything that gave life some sense,
- 4:09Speaker 2: everything from a lovely girl who a fine job and
- 4:11Speaker 2: vanished completely. I stopped in a phone booth, called my
- 4:15Speaker 2: client and told her to meet me in an hour
- 4:17Speaker 2: at the Leopard Spot, the bar in her hotel, and
- 4:20Speaker 2: I made a reservation on the ten o'clock train for
- 4:22Speaker 2: San Francisco, went home and threw a toothbrush and shirt
- 4:25Speaker 2: into a bag. And when I walked into the Leopard Spot,
- 4:28Speaker 2: I was right on time. I found my client, Ellen Wyatt,
- 4:31Speaker 2: and a booth near the back. The soft rose lights.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Touching her face made me wander all over again. What
- 4:37Speaker 2: kind of pressure it could possibly have been to drive
- 4:40Speaker 2: David Stroud away from a girl like this?
- 4:42Speaker 6: I tried to wake my apartment upstairs field, but I
- 4:45Speaker 6: just couldn't. Is it good news?
- 4:47Speaker 2: I hope? So Ellen had broken down rooming house over
- 4:50Speaker 2: in East La paid off.
- 4:51Speaker 6: All right, Dave, we're staying there.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, he had been under the name of Donald Stranagan.
- 4:56Speaker 6: Why would he take place like that? He must have
- 4:59Speaker 6: plenty of money.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Oh well, the city's cluttered with those joints there as
- 5:02Speaker 2: common as ten cans. He figured you can't look into
- 5:05Speaker 2: all of them. We were just lucky.
- 5:07Speaker 6: Then he knows what he's doing. There's nothing wrong with him,
- 5:10Speaker 6: like like amnesia.
- 5:12Speaker 2: No, it's something else. Selling good evening, miss why Martini? Yes,
- 5:15Speaker 2: please for you, sir, Martini sounds fine, Yes, sir.
- 5:18Speaker 6: Right, Marlow. Maybe that punch I had about gambling, maybe
- 5:22Speaker 6: it was right after all. Couldn't some kind of terrible
- 5:25Speaker 6: jam with gamblers do this to Dave?
- 5:27Speaker 2: I might, but I checked that and drew a blank.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Say listen, Ellen, the description of Dave I got at
- 5:33Speaker 2: that rooming house isn't to complete that snapshot I asked
- 5:35Speaker 2: you about you bring it?
- 5:36Speaker 6: Oh? Yes, here that was taken on our first date
- 5:43Speaker 6: four years ago.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Four years ago. Those year has made quite a change
- 5:46Speaker 2: in both of you.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Yes, Dave and are good for each other. Field. I
- 5:52Speaker 6: only hope that the next.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Four years Martini very dry? Oh oh, thank you, sir.
- 5:58Speaker 6: Well, I wish we had the kind of news we
- 6:01Speaker 6: can toast.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Maybe we will sooner than you think.
- 6:04Speaker 6: You've got a new lead. You know where Davey is, oh.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Close enough to be pretty sure. He's taking a ten
- 6:08Speaker 2: o'clock to San Francisco.
- 6:10Speaker 6: San Francisco.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and so mine Phil about coming down to the
- 6:13Speaker 2: station with me me.
- 6:16Speaker 6: But do you think that's wise? What if he saw
- 6:18Speaker 6: me first?
- 6:19Speaker 2: Well, it's worth a chance for you to point him
- 6:21Speaker 2: out to me. What do you say, baby, got something to.
- 6:24Speaker 6: Drink to now, yes, I've got to do it fast
- 6:28Speaker 6: before I start to bawl. Tears would be awful and my.
- 6:31Speaker 7: Teeny no luck, peel, I still haven't seen me.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Wait a minute, how about that one album over there
- 6:49Speaker 2: at the cigar count right?
- 6:50Speaker 6: Oh, he fell on the T shirt. Yeah, Dave couldn't
- 6:54Speaker 6: look that sloppy, And besides he's taller.
- 7:00Speaker 2: That's it. So yeah, well, I guess we missed him.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I better get aboard. Huh.
- 7:05Speaker 6: This kind of scares me. You don't think Dave just
- 7:09Speaker 6: pretended to be leaving that he treated you?
- 7:11Speaker 2: No, No, those leads weren't planted. They weren't that good.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Don't worry, baby, Dave will be on this train when
- 7:16Speaker 2: it pulls out. I'll bet my last buck on it.
- 7:18Speaker 6: Find him for me.
- 7:19Speaker 2: So sure, you just keep that chin out I will.
- 7:23Speaker 6: Okay, you'll call me the very first chat.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Should get Pardon me, lady, I'm sorry. Hey, yeah, just
- 7:33Speaker 2: a short.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Minute, my friend.
- 7:35Speaker 8: Unless you happen to favor dirty shirt size seventeen, you're
- 7:38Speaker 8: in for a big disappointment.
- 7:40Speaker 2: What are you talking about? Well, I think you made
- 7:42Speaker 2: a small mistake.
- 7:43Speaker 5: There isn't that, my bag.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I'm afraid not, mister sat pays in Philip Emazon mollow.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Well, how do you like that?
- 7:49Speaker 8: I saw you pick it up back there at the
- 7:51Speaker 8: information That's where I left mine.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I'm gonna thwarn and belong to me.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I'm sure.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Sorry, it's all right, happens to everybody sooner or later.
- 8:00Speaker 8: Of your friend say you're gonna be on Old sixty
- 8:02Speaker 8: one for Fisco too. All right, So well, let's call
- 8:04Speaker 8: this an introduction our bags, my handle. Many are back
- 8:08Speaker 8: on the road for five for plumbing fixtures.
- 8:10Speaker 5: Yes, sir, I'll see you on board.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Brow much doubt about that. No, we might get up
- 8:14Speaker 2: a little game fun.
- 8:15Speaker 8: Huh oh fine, Yeah, well, I better take a leg
- 8:17Speaker 8: and get my bag.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I'll find you, all right.
- 8:20Speaker 5: I'll never forget a face.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Maybe I ought to cut my head off. I stopped
- 8:31Speaker 2: off and Mike and Popping just long enough to drop
- 8:33Speaker 2: my suitcase, and as we pulled out, I moved through
- 8:36Speaker 2: the train of the dining car and picked a seat
- 8:37Speaker 2: where I could keep an eye on the rest of
- 8:39Speaker 2: the tables. For Dave Straud Well, even if I didn't
- 8:41Speaker 2: recognize his face, I knew from his fiance would handle
- 8:44Speaker 2: a knife and fork European style. He likely to order
- 8:47Speaker 2: liver and bacon and drink tea without sugar, and would
- 8:49Speaker 2: probably be dressed in wooded tweets with a shirt collar open. Hell,
- 8:53Speaker 2: as soon as I sat down, the cow began to
- 8:55Speaker 2: fill my table. Companion acquiet tab color type had his
- 9:00Speaker 2: own business, and you how to mind it almost one
- 9:02Speaker 2: hundred percent, which he did for the fifteen minutes he
- 9:05Speaker 2: took him to eat.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Oh.
- 9:08Speaker 9: I don't know why food always tastes better on his train,
- 9:10Speaker 9: but it does.
- 9:11Speaker 5: Thanks letting me share the table with you.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Oh, not at all.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Perhaps i'll see you later in the club car. We
- 9:16Speaker 5: might have a nightcap.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a deal.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Fine a house all there?
- 9:21Speaker 2: You are fine?
- 9:22Speaker 8: Hey, I've been looking high and low for you, my friend.
- 9:24Speaker 2: What you're doing in here? They serve nothing but food
- 9:26Speaker 2: in this car. You know, you'd say, who's your pal?
- 9:31Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know. He was here fifteen
- 9:33Speaker 2: minutes and we didn't get that far. I know exactly
- 9:36Speaker 2: what you mean, you do.
- 9:37Speaker 8: Yeah, those quiet birds give me the willies too, You know, friend,
- 9:41Speaker 8: I've seen him someplace before, and I never forget a face.
- 9:44Speaker 2: You didn't catch his name?
- 9:45Speaker 8: Huh, he didn't throw it, He didn't throw you like that.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yes, there, you're right on, my friend. Well, it'll come
- 9:52Speaker 2: to me. Face.
- 9:53Speaker 8: They're kind of a hobby with me. I meet a
- 9:55Speaker 8: lot of people, but I never forget a Hey. Have
- 9:58Speaker 8: you lost somebody in.
- 9:59Speaker 1: He the way?
- 10:00Speaker 8: You keep looking around?
- 10:01Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think I found him again.
- 10:02Speaker 5: Hey, what's up?
- 10:03Speaker 2: Where are you going? I followed the leader. I'll see
- 10:05Speaker 2: you all back.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Hey, Marlow, come back.
- 10:07Speaker 8: You dropped something here.
- 10:16Speaker 2: In spite of the fog kicked up by the traveling typhoon,
- 10:19Speaker 2: and never forgot a face. I'd managed to catch a
- 10:21Speaker 2: glimpse at the door of a bunch of tweets and
- 10:23Speaker 2: an open collar on a bill that exactly fit the
- 10:25Speaker 2: four year old snapshot in my wallet. I bucked a
- 10:27Speaker 2: huddle of undecided doulagi is blocking the aisle, but managed
- 10:30Speaker 2: to keep them inside all the way back to the
- 10:31Speaker 2: car sixteen without being seen there. I watched him on
- 10:34Speaker 2: lock compartment EL and go inside. I was convinced it
- 10:37Speaker 2: was Dave Strong, but at this point I had to
- 10:39Speaker 2: be sure. I went to look for the conductor and
- 10:42Speaker 2: finally found him tucked away at a lonely table back
- 10:44Speaker 2: in the club car as intent on his ticket count
- 10:46Speaker 2: as a cheated solitary. I figured I could afford the
- 10:49Speaker 2: time now, so I decided to wait. I headed back
- 10:52Speaker 2: for the seat, and I ran into my dinner partner,
- 10:55Speaker 2: the tad color.
- 10:56Speaker 9: Well, hello again, you ear little earlier for that nightcap,
- 11:00Speaker 9: but to sit down anyway.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Oh, by the way, I'm Roy Tourney.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Oh mine's Marlow, Philip Marlow.
- 11:05Speaker 5: Philip Marlow. I've read that name many times.
- 11:08Speaker 9: You're the famous private detective, well private detective anyway.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Bad know you're tony privilege for me.
- 11:15Speaker 5: Oh you're looking for a match here?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, keep them keep in my eye on this. Oh, thanks?
- 11:19Speaker 2: Thanks again?
- 11:20Speaker 5: Are you on a case now, Marlow? Or shouldn't I ask?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Well?
- 11:22Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, I well, man, are you
- 11:26Speaker 2: hard to hang on too?
- 11:27Speaker 8: But you're mighty lucky. I'm honest, my friend.
- 11:30Speaker 2: You see this, Yeah, I see it's my wallet. Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 8: When you bowled it out of the dining car, you
- 11:35Speaker 8: dropped it on the seat.
- 11:36Speaker 5: I found it for you.
- 11:37Speaker 8: Nothing fell out of this picture here?
- 11:39Speaker 2: And is she all right?
- 11:41Speaker 8: Man?
- 11:41Speaker 10: Oh man?
- 11:42Speaker 2: Who is you? Boy?
- 11:43Speaker 8: The name?
- 11:43Speaker 2: I mean? Huh, don't tell me. I bet you've seen
- 11:45Speaker 2: it before. Yeah, yeah, And I never forget her face.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Uh huh, well thanks now, if you let me have it,
- 11:50Speaker 2: I'm very grateful.
- 11:51Speaker 5: I'm sure, sure glad to be of service.
- 11:53Speaker 8: To my friend anytime I can. Well, speaking of familiar faces,
- 11:57Speaker 8: this is a gentleman.
- 11:58Speaker 5: That you had dinner with.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Huh, that's right out. This is the gentleman, mister Aravak,
- 12:02Speaker 2: mister Tawny, for better or worse, till your destination do
- 12:04Speaker 2: you part? How do you do turning? Turning? Turning? Turning?
- 12:08Speaker 2: That's funny, you know.
- 12:09Speaker 8: I was just telling Marlow here that I recognized you
- 12:11Speaker 8: from some place.
- 12:12Speaker 5: That's very unlikely. I have a fair memory myself. I
- 12:16Speaker 5: don't remember you.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Well, I don't know.
- 12:17Speaker 8: I'm pretty good.
- 12:19Speaker 2: But wait, wait a minute, I'm getting it.
- 12:22Speaker 8: Sure, sure, Oh this is silly, but I saw you
- 12:25Speaker 8: tonight in the railroads.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Ah no, that's impossible. I was so late and nearly
- 12:28Speaker 5: missed the train.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Me too, Only you had a good reason.
- 12:31Speaker 8: Oh yes, sir, my friend, you were kissing the little
- 12:34Speaker 8: woman goodbye. I couldn't see her too well, but she
- 12:37Speaker 8: was quite a looker, and judging from the way you
- 12:39Speaker 8: were going at it, yeah, yeah, Well, wait a minute,
- 12:44Speaker 8: I didn't get any offense.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I was just kidding you along.
- 12:47Speaker 8: Yeah, well, I guess i'll go by my way into
- 12:50Speaker 8: a little poker.
- 12:51Speaker 9: Excuse me, I suppose there has to be one on
- 12:55Speaker 9: every train.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, they helped the ride like a square wheel.
- 12:59Speaker 9: Yeah, well, I think i'll go read a while.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Model.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Good luck on your case. When the conductor climb out
- 13:17Speaker 2: of his pile of tickets to stretch, I went over,
- 13:20Speaker 2: introduced myself and asked the sixty four dollar question.
- 13:23Speaker 4: The Car sixteen, Compartment L.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Well, let's see.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Oh here it is, mister Marlowe. That room's occupied by
- 13:31Speaker 4: when Daniel Stacey.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Daniel Stacy, em sure, same initials as Dave Strode, But
- 13:38Speaker 2: we're not carrying any Dave Stroud tonight, don't bet on
- 13:42Speaker 2: that conductor. It was that simple. I walked up through
- 13:53Speaker 2: the train to Car sixteen, and when I got to
- 13:55Speaker 2: the door of Compartment L, I'd already decided on how
- 13:58Speaker 2: to handle Dave something that he had to go back
- 14:00Speaker 2: to Ellen Wyatt, regardless of what had happened to him. Yeah,
- 14:04Speaker 2: I had it all figured until I heard it. They
- 14:07Speaker 2: come from inside. The door was unlocked, but the lights
- 14:10Speaker 2: were up. When I got them on again, I realized
- 14:13Speaker 2: that nothing was simple. Ever, stretched out of the floor
- 14:16Speaker 2: of Dave's room was many hour back, staring straight up
- 14:19Speaker 2: as he rocked with the pitch of the train, the
- 14:21Speaker 2: side of his head against the sharp steel corner, his
- 14:25Speaker 2: eyes already beginning to glaze. He said, you knew, I
- 14:30Speaker 2: remember sometime. Remember what Why did you come here?
- 14:34Speaker 8: Mannie said, I remember.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Mannie, Mannie. Oh Mama, you'll move again. Let's see you
- 14:46Speaker 2: tell Lis Dyllen wise, who's that?
- 14:48Speaker 6: But who?
- 15:06Speaker 3: To make every day more enjoyable, treat yourself often to
- 15:09Speaker 3: refreshing delicious wriggly spearmint chewing gum. The lively, full bodied
- 15:14Speaker 3: real mint flavor cools your mouth, moistens your throat, freshens
- 15:18Speaker 3: your taste, and the chewing itself gives you a little lift,
- 15:21Speaker 3: helps you keep going at your best. So for real
- 15:24Speaker 3: chewing enjoyment that's refreshing and long lasting, always keep Wriggly's
- 15:29Speaker 3: spearmint chewing gum handy, healthful, delicious wriggly spearmint gum will
- 15:33Speaker 3: make every day more enjoyable. Now with our star Gerald Moore,
- 15:39Speaker 3: the second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's exciting story.
- 15:43Speaker 2: The face to forget either it had been the flat
- 15:57Speaker 2: of a pistol crashing against the side of my head,
- 16:00Speaker 2: or my head crashing against the stone hard floor of
- 16:02Speaker 2: the compartment. Then it turned light into the dark and
- 16:05Speaker 2: left me with a whip behind one ear that size
- 16:08Speaker 2: and shape of a cube board. I couldn't tell which.
- 16:13Speaker 2: When I had both my eyes open, I knew that
- 16:15Speaker 2: it didn't matter. But nothing mattered, really, except that I
- 16:18Speaker 2: was tearing in the many hour back's dead face. About
- 16:21Speaker 2: only inches away, a pair of feet were moving, feet
- 16:24Speaker 2: that belonged to Dave of Stroud, whose suitcase and toe
- 16:26Speaker 2: was on his way out, one hand already on the doorknob.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I went for him around the knees, my my noise
- 16:33Speaker 2: sight at the time, I was off the floor and
- 16:38Speaker 2: after him. He was well out in front, wrestling with
- 16:42Speaker 2: a heavy steel door at the end of the empty
- 16:43Speaker 2: passageway slowed him down. When we reached the platform between
- 16:47Speaker 2: the cars, he was almost mine, but then suddenly a
- 16:50Speaker 2: hand shot out of the dark, grabbed a fist full
- 16:51Speaker 2: of shirt front and spun me hard against the opposite door.
- 16:53Speaker 2: No my hand that belonged to a man and the
- 16:57Speaker 2: tab color mister Roy Taney plus a shiny twenty two
- 17:00Speaker 2: automatic and minus club cock velvet voice.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Get up, Marlow.
- 17:05Speaker 2: We've got a little talk coming at this stage. It'll
- 17:08Speaker 2: be a pleasure, believe me.
- 17:10Speaker 9: We'll see what do you want with Dave Stroud. I'm
- 17:13Speaker 9: a census taker who's real time is running short, Marlow.
- 17:17Speaker 9: When you get off at this stop coming up, you
- 17:19Speaker 9: stay off.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Eh, what's your angle?
- 17:23Speaker 10: Dave?
- 17:24Speaker 5: He still needs my help, and he's still gonna have it.
- 17:27Speaker 2: No matter who he kills kills? What's that supposed to mean?
- 17:31Speaker 2: Many hour back, that chummy one who couldn't forget faces,
- 17:35Speaker 2: he's very dead back in Dave's compartment.
- 17:37Speaker 9: Well, then that loud mouth wasn't just a blow hard
- 17:40Speaker 9: salesman after all, he was what day has been running
- 17:42Speaker 9: from one of those lousy card shop.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Slips, he toney.
- 17:46Speaker 5: Yeah, but they don't count, mister detective.
- 17:49Speaker 9: Nothing counts anymore. But Dave get out of a jan
- 17:51Speaker 9: that can cost him his hide. Just for the record,
- 17:54Speaker 9: a game back in La three months ago that cost
- 17:56Speaker 9: Dave every said he had plus ten grand. He didn't
- 17:59Speaker 9: was about as level as the rest of that knee
- 18:00Speaker 9: pants town of it gets, which makes you what two
- 18:03Speaker 9: things smart Alec. First, a guy from Detroit a real town.
- 18:07Speaker 9: It doesn't like a lousy fix. And second, I like
- 18:10Speaker 9: a fix even less when the sucker on tap is
- 18:12Speaker 9: my own brother. Now, people, get back away from that door.
- 18:16Speaker 9: The station's on that side. I wouldn't want you to
- 18:18Speaker 9: run for it and get shot before you got to
- 18:21Speaker 9: say a few words back over here, Mollowuh.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Take it easy with that gun. Huh, they go off.
- 18:26Speaker 2: You know, all right, the pitch. Let's have it. Now.
- 18:29Speaker 2: What's Dave to you? Ellen? Wyatt mean anything?
- 18:31Speaker 9: Not very much, but Dave is sorry about that. So
- 18:34Speaker 9: when you get back to your client, you tell it
- 18:36Speaker 9: hold just like you are on stay cheerful to stop. Carter, Carter, gentlemen,
- 18:40Speaker 9: Oh conductor, this train wait here a while?
- 18:43Speaker 5: I mean, is there any time to get off on stretch?
- 18:45Speaker 2: Oh?
- 18:45Speaker 4: Sir, just stop long enough to pick up little male,
- 18:48Speaker 4: leave little mail once in a while, take on a
- 18:50Speaker 4: passenger hardly ever, though Carter folks aren't much on traveling.
- 18:54Speaker 4: But by the way, aren't you the gentleman who was
- 18:57Speaker 4: looking for mister Stacy.
- 18:59Speaker 2: H yeah, I found him. Thanks. Oh, don't mention it.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Glad to be of service. Say don't get too close
- 19:05Speaker 4: to the edge. Chair Gentlemen, Carter Carter, California.
- 19:10Speaker 2: We were talking about Ellen Wyatt Toney. Why didn't precious
- 19:15Speaker 2: brother Dave ever let her know that he had to
- 19:16Speaker 2: lay low, that he was in a jam with gamblers.
- 19:19Speaker 2: A bunch of roses with cotton clothes could have gone
- 19:21Speaker 2: a long way. Or again, there's the top.
- 19:23Speaker 9: I'll button it up, Marlow. I don't know any of
- 19:25Speaker 9: the details. Maybe the kid didn't want it to know
- 19:27Speaker 9: he couldn't stay away from the pace boards. Maybe he
- 19:29Speaker 9: just didn't want it to worry. Anyway, that's not the point.
- 19:33Speaker 2: And what is that?
- 19:34Speaker 5: A broken heart? Pizza, broken skull seven times a week?
- 19:37Speaker 2: You should know that much.
- 19:38Speaker 9: People, So so, I don't want you, the girl, or
- 19:41Speaker 9: anyone else to know where Dave is heading, at least
- 19:43Speaker 9: not until I get back to La buy my lonesome
- 19:46Speaker 9: and call a few spades.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Just that like they do in Detroit. Maybe, huh, like.
- 19:50Speaker 9: They do in Detroit. No, maybe you tell the Wyatt babe,
- 19:54Speaker 9: I look her up. Then, now you get over there
- 19:56Speaker 9: at the door and you take your choice, jump or
- 19:59Speaker 9: get pushed, Jump pushed or shot.
- 20:02Speaker 5: Go on, mondo. This is where you get off on the.
- 20:05Speaker 9: Longer you're wait the hotter it's gonna be name it jump,
- 20:09Speaker 9: push or shot.
- 20:13Speaker 2: I couldn't say much for the alternatives, but one look
- 20:16Speaker 2: back over my shoulder, at the gaping twenty two automatic
- 20:18Speaker 2: level in my head and Tanny's ice cold gray eyes above,
- 20:21Speaker 2: and at my mind for me jump it had to be.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Oh.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I would always remember one thing about Cotter, California. The
- 20:41Speaker 2: right of way was more sand than stone. I was grateful.
- 21:04Speaker 10: Carter station will his hand and speaking. Limited left ten
- 21:08Speaker 10: minutes ago. No, no package for you, miss man.
- 21:12Speaker 5: I'm sure, sure, I'm sure.
- 21:15Speaker 10: Huh me snapping at jew Now listen, miss lit Yeah,
- 21:20Speaker 10: brash of some people.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Hey, what happened to you?
- 21:24Speaker 10: Shir?
- 21:25Speaker 2: I tripped?
- 21:25Speaker 6: Dad?
- 21:25Speaker 2: This is important? Can you tell me where the Limited
- 21:27Speaker 2: stops next? E?
- 21:29Speaker 10: Is anybody getting on in the Murdoc corner?
- 21:31Speaker 5: No?
- 21:31Speaker 2: No, no, the first real stop A good sized time.
- 21:34Speaker 2: She smokes cigars shut No no, no, look Dad, this
- 21:39Speaker 2: counts now, come on tell me well then, yeah, yeah.
- 21:41Speaker 10: Sure, well no, there's fortune at you half our week.
- 21:46Speaker 10: You gotta match please shirt.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, here's a whole book keeping. Now tell me
- 21:50Speaker 2: how far is fulting? Ooh for you?
- 21:53Speaker 5: Maybe fifty miles.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Upgrade on how can I get there in a hurry?
- 21:56Speaker 2: I gotta catch that train.
- 21:57Speaker 5: Well, if you gotta, are you.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Where can I rent a car or get a cab?
- 22:05Speaker 10: You're not a Chentzney. Excuse me, Jeeves calling from bigger feet.
- 22:10Speaker 9: He's expecting the grandhot All right for Jake.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Now listen to me, Dad. There's a dead man on
- 22:14Speaker 2: the Limited, this killer as well, and I was tossed
- 22:16Speaker 2: up a train. Now let's take that business.
- 22:19Speaker 5: Where are your ne case? Let's call ahead and get
- 22:20Speaker 5: the police.
- 22:21Speaker 2: I don't want that.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Why not?
- 22:23Speaker 2: Because, for one thing, the killer may have been justified
- 22:25Speaker 2: self defense on the side of the law. Toss them
- 22:27Speaker 2: into a lot of panic will only end up in
- 22:28Speaker 2: more gunplay. For another, I have a very personal instagrind.
- 22:31Speaker 10: Getting tossed off the train.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Yeah, among other things. Now, will you tell me that
- 22:35Speaker 2: coop out there? Is it yours? But I can't for
- 22:38Speaker 2: fifty bucks, my car your cake cash here? Also, here's
- 22:44Speaker 2: MI credentials. I'm a private detective out of LA. I'll
- 22:46Speaker 2: get your car back to you as soon as possible.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I'll pay you another fifty When I do, I give
- 22:50Speaker 2: me the keys, will you quick? Yeah?
- 22:51Speaker 6: Sure?
- 22:51Speaker 3: Sure, sure sure?
- 22:52Speaker 10: Here here it's one in the middle.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Thanks Dad, and don't worry, I'll drive real kit.
- 22:57Speaker 5: What's the matter where you're staring like you don't feel good?
- 23:00Speaker 2: What is it?
- 23:01Speaker 6: Your head?
- 23:01Speaker 4: Maybe?
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, my head. Maybe I already to have it examined.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Sometimes it's real slow coming up with the truth.
- 23:10Speaker 6: The truth.
- 23:11Speaker 5: What do you mean, Sean.
- 23:12Speaker 2: I mean I got a big fat hunch, a hunch
- 23:14Speaker 2: that may be able to stop a second murder if
- 23:16Speaker 2: I make it the Fulton in time. So long, Dad,
- 23:18Speaker 2: thanks a lot, You've been a great help. My apologies
- 23:20Speaker 2: and congratulations to Jake. Like the station agent himself, Willard
- 23:30Speaker 2: Hanson's coop was a little less than spry, but with
- 23:33Speaker 2: the accelerator jammed heart of the floor and only straight
- 23:36Speaker 2: empty highway ahead, I managed to keep it at this
- 23:38Speaker 2: training seventy most of the way, and fifteen minutes later,
- 23:42Speaker 2: when I tore into Fulton followed the street markers to
- 23:44Speaker 2: the station, a long, low, welcome sound in the night
- 23:47Speaker 2: told me I was on time. The train was just
- 23:50Speaker 2: getting under way again. I slammed to a stop at
- 23:55Speaker 2: the end of the depot, piled out of the coop
- 23:57Speaker 2: and started to run for the last car, but I
- 24:00Speaker 2: changed my mind. The train could chug and it's merry
- 24:03Speaker 2: way without me. After all, it was going without Dave
- 24:06Speaker 2: Stroud and his big brother. The two men were walking
- 24:10Speaker 2: down the deserted platform toward me. I slid back into
- 24:13Speaker 2: the shadows of a pile of crates and waited, my
- 24:15Speaker 2: hand tight on the thirty eight in my pocket, suddenly
- 24:17Speaker 2: positive that my hunch was now a sure thing. Roy
- 24:21Speaker 2: Tarny was not Dave's brother, but he was the one
- 24:23Speaker 2: who had murdered many our back and cast sixteen compartment
- 24:26Speaker 2: lro and he was ready to try and murder again.
- 24:29Speaker 5: All right, Straw, that's fine enough all of there.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Tony, you're out of your mind.
- 24:33Speaker 9: You've got no reason to kill me.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I'll never say anything.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Ellen knows that. That's why I ran.
- 24:38Speaker 8: I could never turn Ellen over to the police.
- 24:41Speaker 2: My love her.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Oh yeah, sure, your nuts about it. You got lots
- 24:44Speaker 5: of reasons to be haven't you.
- 24:46Speaker 9: Reasons like Ellen crossing you up for me in a
- 24:48Speaker 9: tall stack of doll Reasons like knowing that we're both
- 24:51Speaker 9: responsible for knocking off our ex boss to come into
- 24:53Speaker 9: that dough. Sure, kid, you got lots of reasons to
- 24:56Speaker 9: love it.
- 24:56Speaker 2: But Tony, I tell you, I do.
- 24:58Speaker 8: I ran away, didn't I But the of.
- 25:00Speaker 9: Course, mister Strad, of course you ran so that you
- 25:02Speaker 9: could wait for a smart time in the smart place
- 25:03Speaker 9: to try black man.
- 25:04Speaker 2: No, no, that's not it.
- 25:06Speaker 3: I ran because I love Ellen, because whatever she's done
- 25:08Speaker 3: has been your fault.
- 25:10Speaker 9: Oh no, kid, you got it all wrong. The lady
- 25:13Speaker 9: was the pilot all the way, even to hire and
- 25:15Speaker 9: allows the people named Marlow to tag you. Said, I
- 25:18Speaker 9: know where to get my hands on you.
- 25:20Speaker 8: The man on the floor in my compartment, the dead man.
- 25:22Speaker 9: That was a loud mouthed salesman with a memory for faces.
- 25:25Speaker 9: He would have spoil everything if he remembered that he
- 25:27Speaker 9: saw me with Ellen in the railroad station and passed
- 25:29Speaker 9: it on to Marlow. I had to shut him up
- 25:32Speaker 9: and then give the people a big cock and bull
- 25:34Speaker 9: story about you'll be and my brother and in hot
- 25:36Speaker 9: water with gamblers.
- 25:37Speaker 2: And Marlow was the other one, the one who grabbed
- 25:38Speaker 2: for me. That's right, stra that was Marlow.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Too bad he didn't grab better, isn't he?
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 25:44Speaker 2: Perfect shame. Taney makes Thrus.
- 25:49Speaker 6: Right big?
- 25:53Speaker 3: Is he?
- 25:55Speaker 6: Is he dead?
- 25:55Speaker 2: Mama? Yeah? Dan? Even in Detroit it because all dead
- 26:08Speaker 2: come on Dave, we got some telephone calls to make
- 26:11Speaker 2: the police for one. All right, Marlow, it is all
- 26:17Speaker 2: this really true? Yeah, fright, So, Dave, a girl you
- 26:21Speaker 2: wouldn't turn in for murder wanted to murder you. I
- 26:25Speaker 2: believe it, kid, all at once. It'll be easier later
- 26:28Speaker 2: on that way. Yeah, sure, Thanks Marlow for getting here
- 26:33Speaker 2: when you did. You saved my life. Well, not exactly.
- 26:37Speaker 2: A guy named Willis hanse It gets part credit for
- 26:39Speaker 2: the guy who runs a railroad station at Cuta, California,
- 26:43Speaker 2: and also smokes cigars and sometimes runs out of matches.
- 26:48Speaker 2: What does that have to do with it everything?
- 26:50Speaker 10: Dave?
- 26:51Speaker 2: See, Hands had needed a light, and I gave him
- 26:54Speaker 2: a book of matches that Roy Tunney had given me
- 26:56Speaker 2: earlier in the club car. I hadn't noticed them then,
- 26:58Speaker 2: but I did when Hands had used them. They came
- 27:01Speaker 2: from the Leopard spot, David.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Yeah, the cocktail lounge at Ellen's hotel.
- 27:06Speaker 2: That's right. And I couldn't buy Towny's having them as
- 27:09Speaker 2: just coincidence that tied him at Ellen too tight. A
- 27:11Speaker 2: hunch said, So wait here with your kid. That only
- 27:14Speaker 2: be a couple of minutes. I've got a long distance
- 27:16Speaker 2: call to make before we get in touch with the police.
- 27:18Speaker 2: But what are you going to tell her Marlow? Anything, Dave,
- 27:23Speaker 2: anything that'll keep her right where she is, ready and
- 27:25Speaker 2: waiting for what's going to turn out to be the
- 27:28Speaker 2: La police. I won't be long kidding. After the telephone call,
- 27:43Speaker 2: Dave and I spent a long hour with the Fulton
- 27:45Speaker 2: Police explaining why a man named Roy Tawny was lying
- 27:49Speaker 2: in the quiet railroad station, face down in a pool
- 27:53Speaker 2: of his own blood. And it was a long hour
- 27:56Speaker 2: again with the railroad officials, who arrived with their own
- 27:58Speaker 2: set of questions. Well, it was four o'clock in the
- 28:03Speaker 2: morning before we were finally aboard a train heading back
- 28:06Speaker 2: for La Dave Stroud and I sat opposite each other
- 28:10Speaker 2: in silence through that bleak, empty yellow and you can
- 28:14Speaker 2: almost feel the day that's coming up, nudge, the one
- 28:16Speaker 2: that's just gone by. I was real glad to see
- 28:21Speaker 2: it go. I sat there looking at Stroud and wondered
- 28:25Speaker 2: if he'd never heard the lyrics of a song or
- 28:27Speaker 2: train was always makes me think of my mammy done
- 28:31Speaker 2: told me when I was in knee pants. My mammy
- 28:35Speaker 2: done told me, son, a woman's a two face, A

- 30:20Speaker 3: I tangled with three snakes. The first was made of gold,
- 30:23Speaker 3: the second war of mustache, and the third was in
- 30:26Speaker 3: the bag, and each in its own way poison. Bob
- 30:37Speaker 3: Stevenson speaking, this is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 30:57Speaker 5: This is Andrew J.
- 30:59Speaker 10: Graham, author of the web Surface series and a man
- 31:02Speaker 10: of his wife.
- 31:03Speaker 4: You're listening to the great detectives of Old time radio.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, Marlog, I'd a bit rough with that landlord.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I don't particularly want my landlord if I'm a renter
- 31:21Speaker 1: co operating with a private investigator. Still a good episode.
- 31:25Speaker 1: And mysteries board trains are great, and there was so
- 31:30Speaker 1: much when train travel was at its height that you
- 31:34Speaker 1: could get out of a mystery set on a train.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Of course, there were obvious stories like murder on the
- 31:42Speaker 1: Orient Express, but there were one hundred others taking advantage
- 31:47Speaker 1: of so many features of train going through dark tunnels,
- 31:52Speaker 1: empty impartments, and the ability, as in this story, to
- 31:58Speaker 1: throw somebody off a train in them be able to
- 32:01Speaker 1: get transportation to actually end up getting back on. I
- 32:04Speaker 1: think you there have been mysteries that have been set
- 32:07Speaker 1: on airplanes. But I think it's a lot harder, particularly
- 32:11Speaker 1: if you're trying to be realistic in dealing with modern
- 32:14Speaker 1: airplanes which are often so cramped. Philip Marlow on a
- 32:18Speaker 1: train up, good idea and a good story overall. All right, Well,
- 32:23Speaker 1: that we'll do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow
