Latest / Others Receiving Votes / CFP Expansion Getting Closer, Players Taking Things Too Far, Week 5 Preview
Transcript
- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: All right, welcome to the show.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_01]: Others are saving votes.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm here with my friend, Gene Wojhowski, as always, packed weekend of stuff we're going to get to.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of stupidity from last weekend we're going to address.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: We will discuss a momentous fat bear update.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_01]: Huge.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: I hope we don't run out of time before we get to that.
- 0:29[UNKNOWN]: Ha ha ha ha.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: We will definitely not run out of time before we get to that.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: But we are going to lead with the news that's coming down the pike here in the last day or so that to me it's like the onset of artificial intelligence.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody is saying AI is coming.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody is saying why we need AI or why we should want AI.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: The 2014 playoff.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody is saying we want a 2014 playoff except the people who stand and make money from a 2014 playoff.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's the leaders in college sports.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: We don't really care what the fans want, but the conference commissioners, Notre Dame AD CFP staff all met in Rosemot, Illinois, yesterday Wednesday.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: to discuss and the consensus court Ross Downger, who was there for y'all who sports.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: The consensus calling a doubling of the postseason feels like a foregone conclusion even if no one will say it publicly.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: that four-line conclusion appears to be coming pretty quickly to Jane because the the 30-day window to negotiate with the SPN between the CFP and the SPN hasn't till October 9th to come to terms if that.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: uh... window closes this things could change but but so we might within a week it's now October 1st have a an agreement in principle at least on a twenty four team playoff for twenty twenty seven i view this is terrible
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: Um, certainly willing to get your thoughts on it as well.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: It does seem like we're heading that way.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: I also, I did see Austin Carp from Sports Business Journal termed it quote unquote tough sledding, getting ESPN to necessarily agree to pay enough money to make this worthwhile because what would have to happen is the conference championship games would have to go away.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: So how do you, how do you fill that revenue coffer with with new revenue so that people can see eight and four Iowa in a playoff game in, you know, start to build Mississippi against Mississippi State, nine and three Mississippi State, Yeehaw.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, Gene, your thoughts as we appear to be barreling down the pipe towards 24.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's no emergency breaks available anymore, your brake linings gone, we're headed toward an expanded playoff which just boggles a mine for a thousand different reasons.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, it's super intelligence pass.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's right.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, as soon as I saw it, as soon as you just, you really didn't even need to read between the lines of what the CFP spokesperson was saying, it sounds like a done deal.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: And we're headed toward 24.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: I've read so many of the same stories that you did, I'm sure, and they have to make up at least $300 million in lost revenue from those conference championship games.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: It will not be played under this newest format.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, we're going to get a lot of eight and fours and God, who knows what could happen.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think I also read the ESPN, the CFP will have five more days after that October 9 deadline to make an offer to ESPN and then there's a December 1st.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: date where the CFP has to officially inform ESPN that there's going to be a change in format.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: So all that sounds like fate, a complete, I do not understand it.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: I did read some of the lip service paid by the CFP's spokesperson about, you know, the importance of the regular season and how we have to keep that in mind and acknowledge that.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: But it just sounded like talk to me because if you really cared about the importance of the regular season, we wouldn't be expanding.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: So this is about television revenue.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: This is about growing the revenue to other networks now.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's completely about money, even though they say it's not about money.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: Whenever they say that, it's always about the money.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: The more you deny it's about the money, the more obvious it is about the money.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: And that clearly drives every decision in college athletics.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: And has for a while the yeah, the thing here again, like I see no popular groundswell of excitement for this.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: I don't sense that people are saying that's what we really want.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's going to help the sport.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, maybe when it actually comes to pass, there will be maybe, well, maybe when we get there will find out we like it more than anybody likes it right now, but I sure don't like it.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like it at all.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I think this is rewarding pretty good teams because you don't want them to feel bad because they couldn't, weren't good enough to make a 12 team play off to your point.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the regular season, this doesn't help the regular season.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: I don't care what they're saying.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the spins on this as well will get more good games.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: They will get more matchups that may feature prominent teams that don't matter.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we talked about this on the podcast week, that these September games we just saw, they may not matter as nearly as much in the future.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: Going forward, they might have been the last September of really impactful
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: game so that we've had and even then you can argue you know that certainly they used to be more impactful, but the ratings of TV ratings are down 11% this year.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think in part because of bad matchups and you can say well now Indiana's going to have to play somebody.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_01]: Nebraska's going to have to play somebody.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_01]: Penn State's going to have to play somebody in the non-conference.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: theoretically yes that could be true that's what got great thank you to go along with this is
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: his proposal that everybody plays 10 qualifying events, which means play your nine league games and then you play one power conference opponent.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: I still don't think those games are going to resonate in a way that makes everybody say, oh, the season's better.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't think so.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I think when you get to the playoff, people are gonna be like, why do I need to watch this 16 seed against 24 seed for the right to play a 15 seed?
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: What does this matter?
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'll say this, Pat, the conference championship games, I'm not married to those.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, relative to the playoff, we've seen them have, in some cases, no meaning in a way, when it came to the rankings.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't happen all the time,
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: But the fact that you can play a championship game, you can lose it and still get in the playoff to me sort of nudders the importance of those conference championship games.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: Second, this is gonna be good for Netflix, maybe, or Amazon, or perhaps Fox, or TBS.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: But the one voice I haven't seen at the table are players.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they're going to be asked to play more games theoretically if you're on those teams at advanced and we don't hear their voices now, so that bothers me and so yes, maybe the money will increase, but we don't have any input from from the players from the people actually have to provide the entertainment and the content here.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, I think that's a great point and that's if you go, all right, we would have a 12 game regular season, we would no longer have the 13th game with the conference championship games, but you're going to have you would have teams who would be getting into playoff no matter what without playing the championship, right, you would if you are in a first ground game, you're 16 against 24 you are playing them the 13th game, you win you're playing a 14th.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: you're playing that a 50 if you keep going you get up to like 17 which is an NFL season and again this it is while college players are better compensated than ever they're not full employees with a say at the bargaining table in what is going on.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: So you are telling them to sign up for something
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: There's never really been great reason for the players to automatically trust the leadership in college sports.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: And theoretically, they're attending school.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: They're working toward a degree.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: They're taking classes, they're taking finals.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: So there is that component also.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was my thing when we first went to 12.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: And we're having, you know, the first round games, like the second, third week of December, I called an ass, say, what about finals week?
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, oh, yeah, we're actually having that now, but, you know, we'll work around it.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, oh, remember that used to be like, the thing, one thing you would didn't touch.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: was finals week because that's when by Gali and these guys are going to study to pass classes and get their degrees and blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's all totally out the window, not even the discussion anymore.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: Any of that?
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: The revenue drive is completely subjugated anything that has to do with education or academics.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: So that's where we are.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: The other thing here, the
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: What I think we're doing again, we're trying to make people excited about mediocre games.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think these are going to be good games.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: They may be relatively close at first, like the first-ground games may be close, just like the rely quest ball can be close and the pop-tarts ball can be close, but
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we're going to be watching excellent football between great teams that have a chance to win a national championship.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: So I feel like we're just diluting people by saying the rely quest bowl is now a playoff game on campus somewhere in just thinking this is going to be a good thing.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, what?
- 11:44[SPEAKER_01]: From a fan standpoint, can you find any reason to convince fans to say, oh, this is going to be exciting?
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: As you mentioned, maybe we get to it and something the unintended consequences were more interested in it than we thought, but it strikes me as and you would what would be the right comparison if if we were making the comparison of the NCA basketball tournament is this like an eight eight nine seed kind of game or
- 12:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, or even a play-in game to 11 season Dayton.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, sorry.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: I get it.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: Why, you know, you have the chance to get into the NCAA tournament, but that doesn't make it compelling to me.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: I'd rather watch a compelling regular season game than a mediocre play-off game, match-up.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm obviously going.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't invite me to Rosemont yesterday and I'm just down the street from us.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't think they're interested in the 12 team guy, but I just don't get it.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I really, I truly am worried that in the pursuit of money, they're going to screw up college football.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think so.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is absolutely a bridge too far and I don't think it helps the regular season.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it helps the postseason.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think it only helps people who coaches and athletic directors who want to say, hey, we went to the playoff.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: We can put this
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we were good.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: To me, you know, part of the joy and the magic as we have discussed of comfortable as the regular season is huge, and then it's really damn hard to make the playoff.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: What's wrong with that?
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: Why does it have to be easy to make a playoff?
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: And the discussion of, well, the lowest percentage of FBS schools get to play for championship
- 13:59[SPEAKER_01]: That's not true.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: They're not expanding the playoff to it for the Mid-American Conference and for Conference USA and for the Sun Belt and the Pact 12, the New Pact 12 and the Mountain West.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: They're expanding it so more teams from the power four and specifically the power two can get in.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: And so what we're really saying is, we're going to 20, 14, on behalf of 68 teams, not on behalf of 138, but on behalf of 68 so that more of them get in.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I don't like.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: The other reality is Pat, you know, this is being done partly because athletic directors are trying to figure out how to pay their bills these days, but this isn't going to solve their problem long term, no, it's just not their cost are always going to increase under the way it's structured right now, okay, second.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: And this is the oldest tail when it comes to playoff sports.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: There's always going to be a team left out that raises holy hell.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: So right now it's the 13th team.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: You know, last year it was Miami, right?
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: you know, there's always going to be a team saying I should have been in.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: We should have made it, you know, so then what you're going to expand it to 36, you know, what have passed them.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, I don't think the solves anything.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_00]: It just makes it easier for less deserving teams to get in.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and to say they had a great season when they just had a pretty good season.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: But that's where we're headed, I had to get that in for we look back actually the last week real quick, you know, you're wearing a UCLA hoodie.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: I've got my this week's cap is noted.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, Georgia got the Georgia hat on Georgia swimming to be specific.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: What's up with the UCLA hoodie there.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I saw this I saw something Dan landing said yesterday in an interview.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: I want to give I want to give them credit and I can't remember who the radio interview was with.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: So I apologize.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it was called coward.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, I tried to dig it up before the end of podcast, but landing said the bot chest need to head coach at UCLA reached out to them and said, hey, look, a canceled practice.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: If you need me, if Dante more is still here in LA.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: Presumably, you know, under care after the concussion.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: And you want me to go check up on him.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: I'd be happy to go do it.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought that was a really stand-up sort of thing.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: And so just an honor of that wonderful gesture by Chesney, I just decided to represent UCLA today.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_01]: I like it.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: So Gina said Jim Rome show.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: Those are the Rome show.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: Jim Rome, there you go.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, yes.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_01]: So to my knowledge, Bob Chesney has hit every correct note so far as the coach at UCLA.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: In addition to being undefeated, everybody likes and respects him, which is rare.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_01]: If he stays undefeated, people will find reasons to dislike him, but for now, he's doing all the right things.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Jean, as we know, the Calth football is always on a steady diet of crazy pills, including like expanding the playoff.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: When nobody wants it, it keeps the sport entertaining.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's very weird, but this last week, they seems like the sport up the dose.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: We went rogue on reason, dump decorum, envelope pushing scenes in three different games.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_01]: Last Saturday.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_01]: And that's not even in taking a guy who was way too big a homer, and the guy who was clearly not enough of a homer will get to those.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_01]: We got five stupid things to discuss here.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_01]: Let's start Texas Tennessee and the Texas two step of I guess what we can call genital celebration not really great stuff and a little bit difficult to talk about and completely frank terms here on the podcast, but Colin Simmons defensive end in the middle of an epic five and a half sack game against the balls decided to punctuate
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: uh... not to be a done running back rally brown it shows to commemorate a touchdown with a i don't know adjuster uh... around the groin area that does not need to be described in detail no now i think not this turn off a lot of people including athletic director crystal content at Texas who wait in said uh... we ain't doing that
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: was this a case of for college guys being college guys or was it too much bulk crap from the horns well they say that the human brain isn't fully developed until your 25 years old and this is living proof of that.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: And you recently, I think I saw it a day or two ago.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_00]: You tweeted out the lead or a link to a 2014 Atlantic magazine story about a marching university, Frac Kid, who decided to launch a bottle rocket from his rear end.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: And that went about as well as you might imagine.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_00]: front drug ring.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: So, yes, college guys are capable of absolute utter stupidity.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_00]: But what we saw with Simmons specifically was just bulger.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_00]: And it was unnecessary.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: And it was astounding
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: other than embarrass himself and his university and his team and pick up a pretty crucial penalty at a point in the game when it really mattered.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: So, I just, I don't understand the behavior and what I really didn't understand was Steve Sarkesian's explanation after the game, where
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: He tried to explain that we live in a social media age.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_00]: Fair enough, we do, but and that reporters in that room had social media accounts and that if they wrote something or broke a story or saw something, they'd be on social media.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: What you and I might do with social media versus what Simmons did because it's the social media age.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was the weakest argument you could ever make to try to justify that kind of behavior.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: I was really disappointed in, in, in, in, in that moment.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: And you mentioned Chris Delcante, he said what Sarkesian should have said after that game that is unacceptable and it can't go can't continue and and Sarkesian did say a little something like that and he said I'm not going to give the death penalty.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: for an unsportsman-like penalty.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody was suggesting that, but I do think a stronger voice against that kind of behavior was needed in that moment, and we didn't get it.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, I agree with you completely.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: And here's the thing, Texas is having an awesome season.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: Texas beat Ohio State in the game of the year so far.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: Texas goes into Newland and wins a game in front of 100,000 people.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_01]: And what are we talking about?
- 22:32[SPEAKER_01]: We had to talk about arch-maning and sarc versus Holly Row after the one game.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_01]: And now we're talking about Colin Simmons doing what he did.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: You guys are demeaning your own accomplishments.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: You're cheapening what you're doing on the field.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: Why?
- 22:49[SPEAKER_01]: Why, you know, that's not my, you have to say today, I thought, had a pretty good line.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: He said, you want to be football stars.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: You want to be TikTok stars because this is, yeah, this is TikTok type stuff.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why if sarquons just chalk it up, is that fine.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: But you know what to want to whom much is given, much is expected.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think it really is expecting that much.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: If you make a sack to not pretend to take a leak on the field, I really don't.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we're putting too high a bar on this.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know what, Pat, when it happened, I immediately thought of if if his parents happened to have made that trip.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, what they must have thought or what the university president Texas sitting up there in the box thought at that exact moment.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, you're representing
- 23:40[SPEAKER_00]: more than just yourself.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm reasonably sure I saw something from Simmons Mom saying, I didn't teach him to do that.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: Is that right?
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she was not happy about it.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_01]: Well, who would, who would, right?
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: She could say, yeah, that's my board up there too.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_00]: Look, I think we can all agree that it was a ridiculous gesture.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: And after the game Simmons mostly apologized.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, we move on and we hope,
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: that everyone learns from the silliness.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, again, young people, they do silly things, but again, I just, it would be great to just talk about number one Texas playing great, but they haven't allowed us to do that.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: A great win, you know, top, top environment.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you're right.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't talk enough about that.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_01]: All right, number two, stupid thing from the weekend, Dylan Stewart, South Carolina NFL Prospect who did not help his NFL standing, throwing punches at Alabama player, and then refused to come out of the game when Shane Beamer
- 24:49[SPEAKER_01]: told him to come out of the game.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_01]: Really weird bad scene there.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: He's been suspended for a game by the SEC in the program.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know who, you know, half and half for each there, whatever the first half suspension from the SEC, the second half from South Carolina, whatever the case is, look, Shane Beamers on the hot seat, how big of a mess is this for him if one of his best players is
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's a terrible look, I think, again, I think it reflects Stuart more than it reflects Beamer, but given Beamer's situation right now, it gives, if perception is reality, then the perception is, Beamer has kind of lost control of things.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but again, I put it on the player, you know, the player made the decision to act the way that he did.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: Beamer tried to get him off the field and the system coach tried to get him off the field.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_00]: It was just a bad scene.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: Now, Beamer didn't help himself in a press or I think it was a day or two ago.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_00]: Or somewhere where report rastum, you know, who decides and how do you decide?
- 26:08[SPEAKER_00]: how long the suspension is going to be.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_00]: So it must have been before the SEC and South Carolina made the final decision on the one game and he just simply said me.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I almost defiantly, you know, me, and that was the only word he spoke in that answer.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_00]: So, and then he spoke about how well practices are going these days.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: So, the whole vibe isn't good, but Stuart, with his actions, kind of started it.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_01]: You did.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: There's no doubt about that.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_01]: And again, like how does the NFL view these things?
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: It totally depends on how productive the player might be.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like Colin Simmons, the NFL discussion about Colin Simmons, I guarantee is five and a half sacks, not any of the other stuff.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they worry too much about that sort of thing.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: Dylan Stewart, that might be a little bit of a different story.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: How much are you producing?
- 27:11[SPEAKER_01]: And so far this season, maybe speed was out for much of the season.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_01]: And then this happens.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a really big Saturday for Shane Beamer.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think you, your SEC schedule, you open with a home loss to Mississippi State.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: In retrospect, that may not be that bad.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_01]: Mississippi State could end up having an unbelievable season.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: Then you get house dad, Alabama, not that bad.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: But those two things rule together coming off of bad season last year.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: Kentucky comes in.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: And those two teams kind of historically, it's a latter game.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_01]: The winner goes up the ladder a little bit, the loser goes down the ladder a little bit in that middle to lower tier of the SEC.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_01]: And Shane Bearinger really can't afford to be down the ladder from Kentucky, I think right now.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: Especially when you follow that up with At Florida, Tennessee, at Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and then you finish with Georgia and Clemson.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_01]: We're seeing Shane Beamer stands as we get further into it.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: And Pat, can I just throw in one other thing here?
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder in this NIL age where players being paid these kind of dollars.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: If that gives coaches pause when it comes to disciplinary actions.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: For example, Urban Myers said, I would have suspended Simmons.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_00]: with that have been too harsh in in my mind, yes, probably too harsh.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but there are old school coaches who would have just said, yeah, you're you're sitting down.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I really do wonder if these coaches now have to walk that very very thin line between discipline and and having a player just saying, I'm out of here or I'm shutting it down or or whatever.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, I think 100% that's that's an added dynamic for coaches to deal with.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: You do hear some like quiet discussion of player finds now since they have salaries interesting.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, again, like nobody was talking about it for real because I'm not sure how legal it is if they're quote unquote not employees.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, what exactly.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't think of that.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so like people want to apply NFL rules, but there's really not an NFL employment structure here.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, we'll see how South Carolina does against Kentucky this weekend.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: You alluded to the scene in the Colosseum really scary scene as
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: USC punctuated a bad performance with a terrible play.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_01]: Desmond Stevens flying into knockout Dante Moore as he was sliding feet first and it was feet first and we'll get to that in a minute.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: Steven's has also been suspended, probably more for the grand standing and kind of Cavalier dismissal of the injured Moore who was laying on the field for a long time.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Steven's was congratulating himself on this play.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: What does that say about Lincoln Riley's program, the way that whole thing unfolded?
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Pat, when you sent the rundown and I saw that, I really struggled with trying to articulate what I think it says.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_00]: Um, one, we have seen these kind of hits before, right?
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: We have seen a player start a slide, um, there's been a debate, did he slide late, did he?
- 30:42[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, to me, that doesn't matter, okay?
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: He, he was sliding and we've seen these kind of hits before.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_00]: And we've seen the targeting penalties that go with it.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_00]: What we haven't seen, at least I haven't seen, is a player,
- 30:57[SPEAKER_00]: just showing such indifference to an injury, to another player.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: And more was literally on the field, I think he had what they called the fencing pose.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_00]: His arm straight out, he was at the very least concussed.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_00]: At the very least concussed.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: At the very worst, we don't know.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: But it could have been paralysis for all we knew.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_00]: And here is this U.S.C.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_00]: player, Prancing about, celebrating as if he had done something that was vital and important.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_00]: And he showed no empathy and compassion and concern.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, I get it.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: You're in that moment.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_00]: And it's difficult just to click off the switch.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: But that was a time for it.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I did see two other USC players come up to him.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: And basically, like put the arms down, put celebrating, and they steered him toward the USC sideline.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess what I'm trying to say is, are those two players that steered him toward the sideline?
- 32:14[SPEAKER_00]: Do they reflect the Lincoln Riley sensibilities?
- 32:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'd like to think so.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think what Simmons did at Tennessee or Stewart did in that game or what the U.S. C. Linebacker did reflect the sensibilities of their head coaches, but the reality is it came on those head coaches watch.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: And ultimately, you are responsible for the behavior and how your players react in those situations.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: So no, I do not think Lincoln Riley condones anything like that.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_00]: Of course he doesn't.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_00]: but just like we said about Beamer, if perception is reality, well, the perception is a Riley's program has some serious issues.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I hate to see that, I just hate to see that for all sorts of reasons.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_00]: I did reach out to Oregon yesterday, and I asked,
- 33:26[SPEAKER_00]: If the player had reached if Stevens had reached out directly to Dante Moore and I didn't get a response and I know somebody asked Dan Lanyne about it at his presser and Lanyne Just brushed off the question and said I'm I'm done talking about that game.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_00]: We need to move forward.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_00]: So we don't have that answer, but I hope he did.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_00]: I hope he did reach out to him.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_01]: I hope so too.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think the message from USC has been
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: sufficient that you know like now we're like kind of like Del Conte I was saying like we're just not going to do that and so there he has been Stevens has been suspended the thing is yes, this just kind of adds to the negative snowball for USC here obviously they haven't want a big game in a long time under Riley they didn't perform well in this game and this kind of overshadowed everything or further emphasized
- 34:19[SPEAKER_01]: everything.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_01]: One thing that I think was, I don't know as a misinterpretation or what, but the question was put to Riley after the game, why was he still on the sidelines?
- 34:31[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the college rule changed like two years ago.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_01]: When you get ejected, you don't have to leave the field, which I thought was a good change because that's like further mark of shame on a player.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_01]: Let them stay out there with their teammates and watch the game.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't, that to me is a complete mon issue, but the, yeah, the celebration afterwards, what you said is a 100% correct that players are in a moment and it's a violent game and
- 35:01[SPEAKER_01]: More defensive players are, hey, you go to hit a quarterback, you get a shot, you hit it.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_01]: Now that was an excessive hit, it was a dangerous hit, clearly the evidence of the danger was right there.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_01]: One thing I have seen probably a little more this season, and I think officials are allowing it is more borderline hits, especially on the sidelines without penalties being called.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_01]: and I think you're setting up a little bit of a slippery slope and especially coaches are going to say, hey, we don't just play to the whistle, we play to the echo of the whistle, we don't play to the boundary, we play a foot outside the boundary, that's when bad things can start to happen.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I have a little bit of concern there about about I would like to see the officiating tighten up a little bit in terms of some of those calls.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_01]: In terms of calls, questionable calls,
- 35:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's a great incident.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_01]: We had a bad dad Bob interpretation from USC radio, Pete Arrogast, who's been calling Trojan Games as 1989, he's called more of them on the radio than anyone in history, part and parcel of that program, but not his finest moments Saturday.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: His interpretation of the hit on Dr. Moor was a fabrication.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: He did not try to slide feet first, he said, wrong, Dante more kind of ducked into that hit, wrong, and then he watched the replay and doubled down.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_01]: Not a feast, feet first slide, more of a niece slide, color analyst Sean Cody was seeing there.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_01]: And this was all on camera for some reason.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_01]: And Cody's face was like, no, I don't agree with you at all there.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_01]: Arbagas did, he talked to a softy-mailer who's the play by play guy for Washington this week.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_01]: And did tell him, you guys, like I made the wrong call.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: But this to me was like the ultimate fake news delivery in favor of the home team and here's my my thought on that is this I really think the super homers don't do us don't do what fans want them to do I think fans basically are like all of us who go to the doctor and say give it to a straight doctor you know if there's bad news give me the bad news.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and so I just don't think I think smart fans at least don't want to be lied to on behalf of their team if we're playing poorly say so if we did something cheap on the field say so.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I, so I, I just don't think that most fans are really of a mind that like, please lie to me so that I feel better about our team.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think?
- 37:47[SPEAKER_00]: Who is the great?
- 37:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry I'm drawing a blank.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, K would.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_01]: Um, K would lead for.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_00]: Kay Wood Ledford, and John Wood Ledford at Kentucky, John Ward at Tennessee, they were comfort food for their listeners, but their listeners knew that if Kentucky or Tennessee made a bad play, that they would get the actual call.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: That didn't happen with Pete.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not here to, you know, look, they make mistakes.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_00]: We all make mistakes.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_00]: I've made mistakes writing stories, doing pieces.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_00]: But that was a rough call.
- 38:44[SPEAKER_00]: And so to his credit, as he said,
- 38:48[SPEAKER_00]: he acknowledged that he screwed it up.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, and probably do it again, too, you know, so, but when you do something like that in the name of homerism, you just need cap your credibility.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_00]: And so even his own broadcast partners were rolling their eyes at the call.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_00]: So again, the
- 39:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_01]: And that's it.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_01]: I guess the the added element of things now, like since everything is on video, including the radio guys doing a call.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: That's on video.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: Then we might know that even your own booth makes think that you're crazy on something like that.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_01]: The opposite of being such a homer.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_01]: We have done Julio.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know who Don Julio is?
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: Jean?
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've been reading about him.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, yeah.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_00]: You can't wait to get to this one.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I love this.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_01]: I love this.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_01]: This is so silly.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_01]: His name is David Rudolph, Jen Raff, age 24, and we know because you got arrested.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_01]: And that's when you get your full name thrown into it.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's when we find out your middle name is Rudolph.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, David.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: He was a former part-time Auburn recruiting staffer who was arrested and accused of quote-unquote stealing trade secrets from Auburn and dispensing them to competitors.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_01]: Not even like it that it was solicited to this sounds like, it's like he was just cold spamming people, other teams specifically in the SEC sending
- 40:35[SPEAKER_01]: Recruiting info.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_01]: This is called trade secrets but it sounds pretty mundane.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_01]: Like kind of recruiting 101.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is how we look at various prospects.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_01]: This is how we kind of organize our recruiting stuff, our priorities.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_00]: He'll play book.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: No, this is not Wiki leaks.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_01]: And the Wake Forest guy was actually like sending out the actual playbook.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_01]: But clearly, rather unusual behavior, especially in the SEC where you think the zealotry would run the other way.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_01]: But Don Hulio turns out, Jean, as a Tennessee grad.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_00]: Is that right?
- 41:14[SPEAKER_01]: It is.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: It is my cue, a Tennessee grad.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_01]: Did you accept stolen trade secrets from Don Hulio?
- 41:22[SPEAKER_00]: I did accept a bottle of Don Hulio.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_00]: A cue.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_00]: that I would have accepted.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_00]: Do you accept something from a program that hasn't had a winning season since 2020?
- 41:37[SPEAKER_01]: Right, who wants to copy their recruiting?
- 41:39[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't make sense, but then I remember I think Auburn's one seven of the last eight games against Tennessee, so maybe I don't maybe you do.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_00]: But again, you can't make this stuff up, you know, with college football.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_00]: You just can't.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, just think about what we talked about here so far.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_00]: And you just can't make it up.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's tremendous.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_01]: This is the mess that we have and we love the mess.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's fine.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: The circus that goes with it.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_01]: Thank God we do have Saturdays.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_01]: That's for sure.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_01]: All right, look, September's in the books.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_01]: We're a third of the way through the season.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_01]: We know some stuff.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_01]: We are at least we think we know some stuff.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: Gene wanted to turn the tables here.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'd been asking him a series of quick hitters based on what we've seen.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to ask me.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_01]: What happened?
- 42:29[SPEAKER_01]: What do we see in the last month?
- 42:31[SPEAKER_01]: What's going to happen in October?
- 42:32[SPEAKER_01]: What do you got for me?
- 42:34[SPEAKER_00]: All right, you ready?
- 42:35[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, this is just I don't even know what the questions are here.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm coming right.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_00]: All right, here we go.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_00]: Based on Dan Lanning's comments after last Saturday's game, would you rather go to Oregon or Chris Brown concert?
- 42:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think I'll go with Oregon.
- 42:53[SPEAKER_01]: I get another like Dan Landing never misses a moment to make it to take a shot in recruiting, especially.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_00]: And he did admit it was a little petty.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, but hey, that's how it goes.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing if not petty.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_00]: All right, Steve Sarkesian and a cigar after the Tennessee win were PJ Fleck and a player's blood on his face.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_01]: The flak vampire brave heart, whatever that was moment, that wins for me because that was just, and that was so PJ flak too, because he's crazy, he's completely crazy.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like if you didn't see it, linebacker, Maverick Barrenowski, a great linebacker name, comes over to celebrate after the game, he's got a bloody mouth and he just wipes the blood off and Barrenowski and puts it on his face.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, what on earth are you possibly doing?
- 43:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm watching this live at like 2.20 a.m.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 43:52[SPEAKER_01]: This game was on the West Coast.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: It ends at God of Clock.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm just like, did PJ Fleck really just do what I think he did?
- 44:01[SPEAKER_01]: He did.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_01]: He's wondering if I just stayed up too late, but that was amazing.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_00]: I spent a week with
- 44:08[SPEAKER_00]: PJ and his program when he was at Western Michigan as doing a piece with game day.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we've followed them the entire week.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I went into that thing, you know, he has his own language and the wrote a boat thing and this whole kind of philosophy.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I was scoffing at it at the beginning of the week.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: By the end of the week, I'm repeating all the same phrases a few years.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I mean, I completely bought into it.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_00]: So he is a different dude.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'll tell you what, I think he's a hell of a coach.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_01]: Just want to add that, I spend some time with him when he first, like a second season at Minnesota when they started like nine and a half.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, he is all of that.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_01]: He is buzzwords, gimmicks, everything.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_01]: And if you go in rolling your eyes, you come out like, oh, I'm in, you know, he has that charisma, that ability to sell it.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think I bought a boat or brought it home after that story.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: All right, Mississippi
- 45:11[SPEAKER_01]: Boy, both fun can't wait to watch them on the field against each other Saturday, Taylor right now.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_01]: I watch him and I think not just star in the present, but star of the future can't wait to watch him continue to ascend.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oklahoma State's Drew Mestmaker, where Texas is Archmany.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, tough one.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_01]: Mr. Baker putting up spectacular numbers, arch playing a little better competition so far.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_01]: I've just seen more from arch.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_01]: I will take him for now.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_00]: All right, then arch, per Taylor.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: Taylor, I think okay.
- 45:55[SPEAKER_01]: Turns of quarterbacking, better quarterback.
- 45:59[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_01]: USC recovery more likely.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: More weapons more talent.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: I watch Michigan and can't figure out how the heck they're going to score.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_00]: Coach of the third of the season.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_00]: Bob Chesney or Wake Forest Jake Dicker.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_01]: Love him both.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_01]: uh... i would take chesney in that one not the dickard has done anything wrong but i've chesney has done so much right but i would not take chesney as my coach of the first third of the season i would be john some role john some role for all right boysy state or the g6 field
- 46:45[SPEAKER_01]: Well, they've beaten two pretty big people in the two big members of the G6 field in Memphis and Western Michigan and handled both of them.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_01]: So I will take the Broncos.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm on the bus now.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, we're just talking about right now.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_00]: Ohio State or Georgia.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_01]: Man, I would like to see them play more good teams, but I'll take Georgia.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_01]: Texas played a better schedule.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, Indiana or BAMA.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, BAMA for now.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_01]: Again, schedule, at least they've played somebody Indiana has played one opponent of any worth.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: That's north-western who I think is kind of sneaky good.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: But that's it.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_01]: Indiana hasn't played a road game yet.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_00]: Miami or Florida.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_01]: But but that's a good one.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_01]: Florida based on thumping.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, based on thumping Mississippi.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'll take Florida for now.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_00]: Oregon at Oklahoma State rematch.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, boy, I want to see that.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm intrigued by Oklahoma State.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_01]: You cannot erase the fact they lost by two touchdowns to Tulsa.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_01]: But if you can reset off of that game, everything they've done has been pretty spectacular.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_01]: Presuming a rematch would be in Eugene, I'll take Oregon.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_00]: LSU and Ole Miss rematch.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_01]: Assuming that would be in Baton Rouge.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_01]: I would throw now, you know what?
- 48:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sticking with Ole Miss.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think they were the better team and almost let LSU back into it.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_01]: They did let him back into it, but then one, I'll stick with the rebels.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_00]: Be why you are Utah.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_01]: Holy war, can't wait.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna be a good one.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_01]: Right now, Utah, I'm super impressed by how they've played.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_00]: Colorado or Texas A&M.
- 48:57[SPEAKER_01]: uh, I have to take one.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_01]: Can't we put on both teams?
- 49:02[SPEAKER_01]: No, I guess Texas A&M, but man, oh man, they have been a dud.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_00]: And finally, are you aware of the Taylor Swift curse?
- 49:12[SPEAKER_01]: I am not.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_00]: Purdue is O and 12 when they play within seven days of Taylor Swift releasing an album.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_00]: So the Taylor Swift curse, or the power of cowbells.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: Look, if there's one thing in American culture, and you don't go against it, it's Taylor Swift.
- 49:35[SPEAKER_01]: So I think the curse is strong and perhaps unbreakable.
- 49:39[SPEAKER_01]: Go on with the curse.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_00]: All right, a wise choice and well done by you.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: We can go back, I'll give you back the podcast, sir.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, thank you.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: Very good questions.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_01]: as a good segment.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_01]: All right, it's time to pick some games.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_01]: And when we get to the end, we'll reveal what happened in the fat bear contest, which could resonate throughout the rest of our contest.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: When we do last winners, I don't know.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have that.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have it?
- 50:17[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_01]: I did not.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think I did okay, which is a stunner did you?
- 50:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_00]: Well, so let's just say I went undefeated and you lost all yours.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_01]: If we both crawled above 500, that's the question.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_01]: I guess we need it.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_00]: We'll get that information next week.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_01]: We will, we will, Bruce or Ken's not with us today.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_01]: So he usually keeps track of that for us.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_01]: But we do, I think we got great games to pick this week.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_01]: Very excited for this week's picks.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_01]: Starting with a Friday nighter.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_01]: This, like I'm really excited for this game.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_01]: Blacksburg Friday night, I want to see if,
- 51:00[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, that stadium is back to being what it used to be in the Frank Bemer days Lane Stadium Pittsburgh is at Virginia Tech.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_01]: They're both undefeated.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_01]: Somebody's going to be five and oh somebody's going to say yeah, we're coming for Miami.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if they really are coming for Miami, but they might be the second best team in the ACC.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_01]: Panthers who have been good so far.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: Getting three and a half.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_00]: James Franklin has done a great job so far.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he really has, this is one of those James Franklin big game James moments.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not taking pit because of that history.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm taking pit because I think they're sneaky good and they're game those three and a half points.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I will take the points and I will take the Panthers.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's going to be low scoring.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_01]: I think they got a block for junior tech.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_01]: The hokey's have they've made a living just disrupting the the line of screaming to get in the back field.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_01]: If it can block them, I think they have the better team otherwise.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I will take the Panthers and the points there as well.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_01]: I've now lost the rundown here we go.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_01]: I've got it back.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Alabama giving six at Mississippi State talk about cowbells.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to be clanging for that one.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_00]: God, this is going to be such a, I hope this is a great game.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_00]: I really do.
- 52:33[SPEAKER_00]: At the beginning of the season, we would have just sat, okay, so Bama, you know, when, you know, this is why you don't play that schedule game, by the way, because of, of games like this, how teams can develop, this is to be state as a perfect example of how things change.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to take Bama,
- 52:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't feel especially great about it.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't be surprised if this game was a push.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_00]: But Bama has really showed me something.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_00]: So as Mr. Bistay, obviously.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_00]: And that game being played in Stark Vegas is no small thing, but I'll take Bama and I'll give those six points.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I like it being six, not seven.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm with you.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_01]: I'm taking Alabama there.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_01]: Lot this would be fun.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_01]: If Mississippi State wins, this is really a deck throwback year back to 2014 when they were, they were the first number one team in college football player for ranking history.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm impressed by what Alabama's put on the field.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_01]: Forced to a game score in 45 or more points, something they have not done since 2018 when they had a great team with two of them, all those great receivers, Waterland Devante Smith and so on.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_01]: Probably not gonna get 45 this time, but I do think there's gonna be plenty of points on the board in seven more for Bama than for Mississippi State.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_01]: Another game that I'm very excited for, Ohio State Lane 14 at Iowa, a place where heavy ranked favorites tend to struggle.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think?
- 54:12[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I will need all of its superpowers.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_00]: Last week, too.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_00]: be Michigan and I just don't know if they can pull something like that off again, but I think they can do enough Iowa things to keep it within 14.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_00]: They just, that's just what they do and that's who they are and they slap it up and they slow it down and they play physical and they play discipline for the most part.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll take Iowa, I'll take those 14.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, yes, I'm not saying punting is winning, but punting is covering so I think I think I can cover.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, we do have stats.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_01]: We got stats from from Gina Gonella are producing here.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_01]: Jean, you were four and one last week.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_01]: I was three and two.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I think I'll be that.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_01]: Hello.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm two games above 500.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_01]: You're 500.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_01]: We're almost respectable.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm OK.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm proud of this.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm taking the Hawkeyes to cover.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_01]: Not the Atlanta Hawkes, the Iowa Hawkeyes for some people in Congress who may be confused about that.
- 55:23[SPEAKER_01]: it happens.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_01]: Who among us hasn't built an elaborate conspiracy theory alleging, you know, criminal behavior based on a confusion of the Iowa Hawke eyes and in the Atlanta.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: If I had a nickel for every time I had done it.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_01]: So Florida Missouri, Gator's Red Hot,
- 55:47[SPEAKER_01]: laying five and a half in Como.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_01]: They're in the same situation to a degree that Mississippi was last week when they went into Gainesville.
- 55:56[SPEAKER_01]: Coming off a big win, everybody's flying, but you may be a little bit flat.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_01]: Do the Gators have enough juice to come back and cover the five and a half here.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'd really like to take the fight in Pat 40s in this one.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe you'd think, you know, the gators, they have that let down after the win against Ole Miss, and they're going to that snake pit of yours.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_00]: But I just can't.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't see it.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't see it.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm taking the gators.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_00]: I give it a point.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I hate to continue to agree with you, but I agree with you.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_01]: I just think that I've been so impressed by what they're doing.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_01]: And the running game tends to travel in a travel to Auburn for them.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's going to travel to Columbia as well.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm with you on that.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_01]: We've got to get a big 12 game in here of interest.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_00]: uh... Cincinnati off to an undefeated start but a seven-point dog at Arizona what do you think happens in Tucson i believe that's an eleven p.m. yeah body clock kick time for uh... for Cincinnati but Arizona has has not been super impressive they've had the i mean hey they've staged some really nice comebacks
- 57:17[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm a little concerned about their slow starts.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'll take Cincinnati.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'll take those seven points.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, there we go.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to go with Arizona.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_01]: I look Cincinnati, go kudos to the undefeated start.
- 57:34[SPEAKER_01]: But they had to pull a rabbit out of their hat to come back to meet Miamiville, Ohio.
- 57:40[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I think things catch up to him here travel body clock and just water finds its level.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_01]: And this is not a team that's good enough.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think to be five and oh, so give me the wild cats and we got one difference there.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_01]: At least I do have a lock of the week.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_00]: I do my friend.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to the 40 well of Eastern Michigan.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_00]: You mask.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_00]: Oh boy, you mask is giving six and a half.
- 58:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to take UMass, I mean, you just don't, you don't walk into war in the clerk alumni stadium in Amherst and get a win, I'll lay the points for unbeaten UMass.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_01]: That first of all, there was a push actually of Dan Wetzel Postrid to have that stadium called nicknamed the junkyard because the stadium was being paned for how bad it was.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_01]: But amazing, like the we are picking, you're picking you mass to do anything.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_01]: Tells you where we are.
- 58:43[SPEAKER_01]: The underrated story of the season so far as the you mass is undefeated a year after going on 12.
- 58:50[SPEAKER_01]: like Joe Harris, semi-ac, the coach.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_01]: He was the only 12 guy last year.
- 58:55[SPEAKER_01]: He's the four and all guys this year.
- 58:57[SPEAKER_01]: Keep going, men, men, I agree with you.
- 58:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think they cover that.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_01]: As for me, I'm gonna go and say Northwestern's going to upset Penn State Friday night, not just cover the three, but I think they're gonna win the game.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_01]: They're opening their new stadium.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_01]: If Northwestern's never had a snake pit atmosphere in its history, this is their chance to have one.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_01]: They got an extra day Penn State played Saturday afternoon with Western played Friday night.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_01]: I liked what I saw from the Wildcats.
- 59:31[SPEAKER_01]: Chip Kelly is dialing it up.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_01]: Aiden Chiles.
- 59:35[SPEAKER_01]: He's the random play generator, but when he is generating good plays, he's really good.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to say Northwestern pulls that one for my.
- 59:45[SPEAKER_00]: But I think I saw a thing on their new stadium, which looks spectacular by the way, where there's a there's a seating area where only Northwestern fans are allowed.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_00]: Like is that no standing area?
- 59:59[SPEAKER_00]: No, a seating area.
- 1:00:00[SPEAKER_00]: Is it a standing area?
- 1:00:01[SPEAKER_00]: Did I read that wrong?
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_01]: The student area is all standing like they don't.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but there's there's another.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I may have misread it, but I thought I saw where there's a place in the stadium where opposing fans are not even allowed.
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_00]: to be in.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to wear the purple.
- 1:00:20[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to be a Northwestern fan to gain entrance to that area.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_01]: Sweet.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, you know, whatever it takes to have Northwestern producing atmosphere, I'm in favor of it.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think they have.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_00]: The last stadium looks fantastic.
- 1:00:38[SPEAKER_01]: All right, two last things here.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to hit that bear week and then I want to hear your movie review.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, fat bear week though, let's hear it for me, back pack wins the fat bear week incredible selection by me a 20 year old chunky earth sign.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_01]: from an outsized female, all right.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_01]: Backpack wins fat bear week, more than 2.3 million online votes, very tight voting, one by only 5,000 votes.
- 1:01:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure who was second.
- 1:01:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure it's said here.
- 1:01:21[SPEAKER_01]: Holly, I think, was second.
- 1:01:23[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wait, no, back back is the daughter of Holly.
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, Holly was, oh, Holly was big back in the day, man.
- 1:01:29[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't horse racing path.
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't need to go through the line.
- 1:01:32[SPEAKER_01]: At any patterns, pedigree matters.
- 1:01:35[SPEAKER_01]: And mostly that pick matters for me.
- 1:01:37[SPEAKER_01]: That is, will be the tiebreaker.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_01]: If you and I end up tied, I win the picks.
- 1:01:41[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks to backpack.
- 1:01:43[SPEAKER_00]: So, Pat, is it your testimony that backpack was in Alaska?
- 1:01:49[SPEAKER_01]: bearing bad dearly.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to give you a minute to process the question because I know you weren't.
- 1:01:55[SPEAKER_01]: You weren't.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want you to purge yourself.
- 1:01:59[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 1:01:59[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's a prized you to learn.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_00]: We have text messages from backpack saying that he was in Atlanta for a lock scan.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_00]: Not in Alaska.
- 1:02:13[SPEAKER_01]: Well played, James.
- 1:02:15[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:02:16[SPEAKER_01]: All right, you went and saw the Odyssey, right?
- 1:02:18[SPEAKER_00]: I went saw the Odyssey and I was disappointed.
- 1:02:21[SPEAKER_01]: Were you okay?
- 1:02:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to tell you why, because I went with my wife, Cheryl, and we thought it was going to be a documentary on the Honda Mini-Pan.
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_00]: And so...
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_00]: That was surprising to say the least okay, so you was that like a real laugh or was that like a fake Hot chat.
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_01]: No, that was a real laugh because we used to have two Honda Odyssey in the childhood days
- 1:02:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm trading text with Tom Renaldi last night and I give him that same line.
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_00]: And there's like a long pause and then you see the three dots where he's typing and he types back, please.
- 1:03:05[SPEAKER_00]: Please do not use that on the podcast, please.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, I'm using it and I'm gonna get a laugh.
- 1:03:11[SPEAKER_01]: That you did.
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_00]: So Renaldi, take that Renaldi.
- 1:03:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, oh, it worked.
- 1:03:16[SPEAKER_01]: It landed.
- 1:03:17[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_01]: That is clearly the end of the show.
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_01]: We cannot top that that bit of comedic genius.
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_01]: So backpacks of winter and the Odyssey lines.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see if we got any other winners for you.
- 1:03:31[SPEAKER_01]: Enjoy the games this weekend.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_01]: Shouldn't be a lot of fun.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be back next week.
