- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to the Return to Glory Podcast.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Return to Glory Podcast Hunter's Arberniki, Austin Rose, No Dak
- 0:33Speaker 2: this morning. We are coming to you live on YouTube
- 0:38Speaker 2: here this morning on Tuesday, one day late, no Monday podcast.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Dak's not here with us this morning. Had some phone issues.
- 0:47Speaker 3: What's new for Dak seems to be pretty typical for him.
- 0:55Speaker 4: He just needs to Yeah, it needs to start using letters,
- 0:58Speaker 4: homing pigeons something, because this is gonna be like his
- 1:03Speaker 4: I've only known him for what this is the third
- 1:05Speaker 4: year doing Dak and this is probably gonna be his
- 1:07Speaker 4: fourth phone.
- 1:10Speaker 2: He did figure it out, thank goodness. I think it's
- 1:13Speaker 2: a charger just broke off, So I think he'll be
- 1:15Speaker 2: all right. But and I'd love to see Dak try
- 1:20Speaker 2: to work with a pigeon.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it'd be a good falconer, you know,
- 1:26Speaker 4: can I could see him with the birds on the arms.
- 1:31Speaker 5: You could probably speak their language and you know, chirping
- 1:33Speaker 5: at him.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Doesn't speak our language.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Yeah, he doesn't speak our language very well. So you
- 1:39Speaker 4: know maybe pigeons is the right the right level.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Well, we are live on YouTube here this morning and
- 1:46Speaker 2: replays will be found on anywhere you can listen to
- 1:49Speaker 2: your podcast. Today, Austin and I will be discussing the
- 1:53Speaker 2: Husker defense under new defensive coordinator Rob Arch coming over
- 2:00Speaker 2: from San Diego State and bringing in the four two
- 2:04Speaker 2: five scheme. This is after Nebraska has now had its
- 2:08Speaker 2: third defensive coordinator in four years under coach rule, transitioning
- 2:13Speaker 2: away from the three three five where the previous two
- 2:16Speaker 2: coaches UH coach that scheme and now we are I'm
- 2:21Speaker 2: not going.
- 2:21Speaker 3: To say back to the four two five or back
- 2:23Speaker 3: to a.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Four man front, which is what most people are used
- 2:27Speaker 2: to sing. Uh And Yeah, Austin and I just wanted
- 2:30Speaker 2: to get your thoughts here at a high level.
- 2:32Speaker 3: What do you think of coach Arch?
- 2:34Speaker 2: What do you know about him as he transitions over
- 2:37Speaker 2: from San Diego State.
- 2:40Speaker 4: I know he's you know, he's kind of like the
- 2:42Speaker 4: young hot defensive coordinator higher and it's not like in
- 2:46Speaker 4: the country, but it's like, we're not hiring an old
- 2:50Speaker 4: an old.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Head and that the.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Ass text that did pretty well last year. At the
- 2:56Speaker 4: end of it, they're eleventh in the country. But I
- 2:59Speaker 4: also know that they didn't really play that many good teams,
- 3:04Speaker 4: and then we did bring over their their linebacker.
- 3:12Speaker 5: And safety.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Right that we brought over two players from their team.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I don't I might be just remembering, So I don't know.
- 3:22Speaker 4: The three three five we wrote it Tony White. We
- 3:26Speaker 4: loved it last year. We didn't love it so much.
- 3:28Speaker 4: But our passing defense was good last year, and our
- 3:31Speaker 4: run defense is horrible. We got no pressure on the quarterback.
- 3:33Speaker 4: So that's like I feel like we're with our defensive coordinators.
- 3:39Speaker 4: We've been hiring or changing things to address the previous
- 3:42Speaker 4: year shortcomings, but we're just kind of moving moving the
- 3:47Speaker 4: rocks from one one table to the other table, because
- 3:50Speaker 4: then there's nothing on the other table.
- 3:51Speaker 5: We haven't quite put it all.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Together outside of the that one year with Tony White
- 3:56Speaker 4: when the offense could put together. So I'll be interested
- 3:59Speaker 4: to see if you can and if we can have
- 4:00Speaker 4: a decent pass rush as well as you know, a
- 4:05Speaker 4: run run blocking game. So that's what I know, and
- 4:09Speaker 4: that's not even what I know, because I don't know anything.
- 4:10Speaker 4: I mean, I literally I have no idea if it's
- 4:13Speaker 4: gonna work.
- 4:15Speaker 3: No idea out of this, you know, or this side
- 4:19Speaker 3: of the ball.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I have heard I just the widest array from people
- 4:24Speaker 2: discussing what they think about our defense, And like I said,
- 4:28Speaker 2: I mean, that's kind of how this team is a
- 4:30Speaker 2: little bit as well, and how it's going to be
- 4:32Speaker 2: with new people. But then with us, you add in
- 4:34Speaker 2: new coaches as well, and you just you just don't
- 4:39Speaker 2: know until you start to see it. And I completely
- 4:42Speaker 2: agree with you that the common thing to do is
- 4:46Speaker 2: look at last year what didn't work, and you are
- 4:50Speaker 2: you can assume or hope that what was working the
- 4:54Speaker 2: year before is going to continue to work. Uh, And
- 4:58Speaker 2: then you can help fill in pieces with players and
- 5:01Speaker 2: or scheme.
- 5:02Speaker 3: And you're right. The one thing I mean since really rule's.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Been here has been the pass rush year after year
- 5:09Speaker 2: and getting pressure.
- 5:09Speaker 3: On the quarterback.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And will this four two five scheme in itself and
- 5:16Speaker 2: we'll get to the players here shortly, will the scheme
- 5:19Speaker 2: allow us to get more pressure on the quarterback, create
- 5:22Speaker 2: more chaos in that sense while still stopping.
- 5:26Speaker 3: The run on the interior. Uh? You know, I think
- 5:29Speaker 3: the three three five scheme from last year and.
- 5:32Speaker 2: The years before there was some encouraging things with the
- 5:37Speaker 2: sort of flexibility.
- 5:40Speaker 3: It had some of the the.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Adjustments you can make to make it look like a
- 5:44Speaker 2: five down front, even a four down front if you
- 5:47Speaker 2: wanted to, you could. You could do some different disguises
- 5:51Speaker 2: and everything like that from from what we researched and
- 5:54Speaker 2: read about it, and I think we saw some of
- 5:55Speaker 2: that on the field too.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Yeah, we like the three five.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I think for the most part, we've liked our defense
- 6:01Speaker 4: the last four years or whatever three years.
- 6:04Speaker 2: And the question, I guess that you are the challenging
- 6:07Speaker 2: part of it. Like from a schematic standpoint, I didn't
- 6:10Speaker 2: mind it right like people thought it wouldn't work in
- 6:13Speaker 2: the big ten. I think the called the problem or
- 6:16Speaker 2: the issue was maybe we didn't have the right personnel
- 6:19Speaker 2: to fit that three three five. And the best year
- 6:22Speaker 2: of the defense, I think with a three three five
- 6:24Speaker 2: you got to have an anchor nose tackle that's like
- 6:27Speaker 2: like Nash Hutmocker, which we had, and then you throw
- 6:30Speaker 2: in Ty Robinson as well with that group and that
- 6:34Speaker 2: you know, guess what, that was the best defense under
- 6:36Speaker 2: coach rule and in his three years here.
- 6:39Speaker 4: So you're just yeah, that year were our players were
- 6:42Speaker 4: old and big, you know, like it's like, oh, we
- 6:44Speaker 4: have three twenty three year olds on the line like
- 6:47Speaker 4: that that just happens to work in the college setting.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And and you go last year's team right like I
- 6:56Speaker 2: heard Husker online talking about this yesterday, like cam Lenhart
- 6:59Speaker 2: is not the prototypical build that you really think of
- 7:05Speaker 2: when you think of a rush end in a three
- 7:06Speaker 2: three five or an end in a three three five,
- 7:08Speaker 2: because sometimes you do have responsibilities where you get pushed in,
- 7:12Speaker 2: especially with that flexibility like I was getting talked about, Well,
- 7:14Speaker 2: now he gets moved out to where he's a true
- 7:17Speaker 2: true rush end in a four to two five. You know,
- 7:20Speaker 2: very seldom is he going to ever get put over
- 7:22Speaker 2: a inside technique of a gar or a tackle or
- 7:26Speaker 2: even you get to put over a gar. He's going
- 7:28Speaker 2: to be a true rush end. And he's got that
- 7:29Speaker 2: body build for that. So you know, if you want
- 7:33Speaker 2: to again be the optimist and look at that, you
- 7:36Speaker 2: look at our personnel here and you go, Okay, this
- 7:38Speaker 2: maybe fits better to a four to two five scheme
- 7:40Speaker 2: than what we had. Now that's still like last year,
- 7:43Speaker 2: we should recruited and transfer portaled our way to a
- 7:47Speaker 2: better fit for the three three five We didn't do that.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Our defense wasn't horrible last year, but it definitely.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Was not to place.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Our past defense was one of the best of the country.
- 7:59Speaker 4: Or run defense wasn't great, and our red zone defense
- 8:02Speaker 4: was terrible.
- 8:03Speaker 2: And so you mentioned the red zone defense, that is
- 8:06Speaker 2: I think a really big thing here. I'm also to
- 8:08Speaker 2: consider red zone defense, third down defense, whatever you want
- 8:11Speaker 2: to call it, the situational stops.
- 8:14Speaker 4: When hey, yeah we had we gave you know, it's
- 8:20Speaker 4: tough to put you back in what it was like
- 8:22Speaker 4: last year, but I remember a lot of big third downs,
- 8:24Speaker 4: like where we would hold them.
- 8:26Speaker 5: It'd be third and long, and then we'd give up.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Eight yards and they'd get the first down and the
- 8:31Speaker 4: drive would just keep continuing. And there was just a
- 8:34Speaker 4: lot of long drives where it's like, man, we we
- 8:37Speaker 4: look really good on the first two downs, and then
- 8:39Speaker 4: the third down we goober it up or give up
- 8:42Speaker 4: the fourth down short run, and yeah, yeah, we gave
- 8:50Speaker 4: up forty points to Ioland that's kind of all you
- 8:52Speaker 4: need to know.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Going through our projected depth chart here and mentioned some
- 8:59Speaker 2: guys names that you'll be hearing.
- 9:02Speaker 3: I don't like to do this too.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I mean, if you're a really big follower of Husker football,
- 9:05Speaker 2: You're gonna know a lot of these a lot of
- 9:07Speaker 2: these names already. H. If you're not and you're kind
- 9:11Speaker 2: of a casual fan, which more and more people are
- 9:13Speaker 2: getting to that point because of how things have gone,
- 9:16Speaker 2: a lot of these games could be new for you. Uh.
- 9:19Speaker 2: We'll start with the defensive line here and as we mentioned,
- 9:23Speaker 2: the pass rush, but also being able to stop stop
- 9:25Speaker 2: the interior run.
- 9:26Speaker 3: It's gonna be a big thing.
- 9:28Speaker 2: On the edges that we mentioned. Kam ll en Hard
- 9:30Speaker 2: are already and Williams Wery uh the other edge, and
- 9:35Speaker 2: I think when they is the guy that even when
- 9:39Speaker 2: when when you look at previews, when you hear people talk,
- 9:41Speaker 2: he's the one that you just you you you feel
- 9:46Speaker 2: that he could have a breakout year. Uh if this
- 9:50Speaker 2: scheme really fits him well and if that happens. Having
- 9:53Speaker 2: a disruptive defensive end that can can make things happen
- 9:59Speaker 2: on third down and just occasionally randomly get a tackle
- 10:02Speaker 2: for loss like that is such an important position on
- 10:06Speaker 2: the football field. And if he can be that guy,
- 10:09Speaker 2: I like what this defense is gonna look like here.
- 10:12Speaker 3: In twenty twenty.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Six, he was the guy that when we got him,
- 10:15Speaker 4: you know, he was a former five star. I feel
- 10:17Speaker 4: like he's not built I describe as build more like
- 10:21Speaker 4: Grandy Get Gregory. He seems he's just long and lanky,
- 10:24Speaker 4: and that's kind of what they're trying to work with.
- 10:28Speaker 4: I would say last year's disappointing from its perspective.
- 10:33Speaker 5: I don't really know.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean again, you're you're you're three three five
- 10:39Speaker 2: scheme that that's not your prototype build for a defensive end.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Sometimes you have to Yeah, you're you get pushed in
- 10:49Speaker 4: the middle and you're the one trying to stop the
- 10:51Speaker 4: you know, two offensive linemen and it's like, no, this
- 10:53Speaker 4: guy's trying to come off the edge and wrap around
- 10:56Speaker 4: and snag people.
- 11:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Surprisingly amount uh names that just are have been here
- 11:06Speaker 4: and even though they're young. It's just I feel like, yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 4: you mentioned len Hart, who has he been here all
- 11:12Speaker 4: four years?
- 11:13Speaker 5: Five years?
- 11:14Speaker 3: Been here a while? Yep.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean the people we like him, I guess
- 11:19Speaker 4: I like him. You know, he's been around a while.
- 11:21Speaker 4: And then last year, at the end of last year,
- 11:24Speaker 4: cad he Beatriz Act, he gat Shock.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Yeah, he had a good like last couple of games
- 11:30Speaker 5: of the year.
- 11:31Speaker 4: I remember being surprised by him.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think on him and Anthony Jones Junior is
- 11:36Speaker 2: another transfer here. I've heard a lot of really good
- 11:38Speaker 2: things about him as well, So.
- 11:42Speaker 5: I mean there's there's that.
- 11:44Speaker 4: You know, he's still here, and I remember we were
- 11:46Speaker 4: really excited about him a couple of years ago.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Interiorly, Riley Van Poppel and Owen Stoudama are gonna be
- 11:55Speaker 2: the two guys that that we're looking at.
- 11:57Speaker 3: But we have we have some guys here too, like
- 11:59Speaker 3: some breakout guys.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Your your Sheer Winnington, He's another name that we keep
- 12:04Speaker 2: hearing over and over. And then Sam Lefo two gave
- 12:09Speaker 2: more Tyson, Terry, some other names there on the defensive line.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You know, we don't know who's gonna win all these
- 12:14Speaker 2: battles for one and two deep.
- 12:16Speaker 3: But I mean that this group, to me maybe is.
- 12:19Speaker 2: The most I don't call concerning, but we they all
- 12:23Speaker 2: these guys can't just be placeholders, I think, and you
- 12:26Speaker 2: gotta be you gotta be able to still get some disruption.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And and I mean Van Popo is a big dude.
- 12:33Speaker 2: I mean he's he's a big, big body, and we
- 12:37Speaker 2: need to we need to make sure these guys aren't
- 12:38Speaker 2: just there. They and they're impacting the game in their
- 12:41Speaker 2: own way on the interior defensive line.
- 12:45Speaker 4: And I would say last year this this was the
- 12:49Speaker 4: position that we really felt the loss of the seniors,
- 12:53Speaker 4: you know, and then Davis left to Miami, and he
- 12:58Speaker 4: would have thought he was next to Don Consume based
- 13:01Speaker 4: on what people thought when we kept in the year
- 13:03Speaker 4: prior that he was basically a nose show last year.
- 13:06Speaker 4: So and we all thought, right, poppos kind of feel
- 13:09Speaker 4: that boy and he didn't really, So hopefully that the
- 13:11Speaker 4: new scheme is just more beneficial less stuff. You have
- 13:14Speaker 4: to know, you know, you know, you're all a little
- 13:16Speaker 4: bit better. But I agree, they they they We went
- 13:21Speaker 4: out and got three transfers for the position, right or two,
- 13:25Speaker 4: so we knew it was a position to need.
- 13:28Speaker 5: So hopefully hopefully that works out for us.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I'm moving on to linebacker here that the key guy
- 13:35Speaker 2: bringing in his own Shambliss as you mentioned before, coming
- 13:38Speaker 2: with with Rob Ursh from San Diego State. And the
- 13:41Speaker 2: big thing there's you got a guy, I mean that
- 13:44Speaker 2: that's your position here is like the coach on the field, uh,
- 13:48Speaker 2: your your middle linebacker type of spot and having a
- 13:51Speaker 2: guy that is familiar already with the defense, A veteran
- 13:54Speaker 2: guy too, with some leadership capabilities. Yeah, I don't know
- 13:57Speaker 2: anything about him as a human, but you know, assuming
- 14:00Speaker 2: that all works well, I mean, he's your quarterback on
- 14:02Speaker 2: the defense, and I think that's a big plus and
- 14:05Speaker 2: a big takeaway here with this linebacker group. Dawson Merritt
- 14:10Speaker 2: also we expect to get see some playing time saw
- 14:12Speaker 2: some playing time last year Vincent Shavers as well on
- 14:16Speaker 2: that same boat Dexter Foster. I think that's a big
- 14:19Speaker 2: position battle, you know if Shape Shavers or Dexter Foster
- 14:22Speaker 2: is kind of that second linebacker.
- 14:25Speaker 3: In the four two five.
- 14:27Speaker 2: And Christian Jones again another guy here's and maybe it's
- 14:31Speaker 2: just because the College Football video game is.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Back out for his third year.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I feel like I know all these guys' names pretty
- 14:37Speaker 2: well as far as seeing them, whether that be from
- 14:42Speaker 2: that game or uh remembering from previous years or just
- 14:47Speaker 2: listening to other people talk about him. But you feel
- 14:50Speaker 2: like you maybe have some depth and some different rotational
- 14:52Speaker 2: guys that that could all potentially pan out here on
- 14:55Speaker 2: the defense.
- 14:56Speaker 4: I don't think you mentioned Jacob Bauer, which is a
- 14:58Speaker 4: guy that coaching staffs love but year and you know,
- 15:00Speaker 4: he got in a little bit and then I think
- 15:02Speaker 4: he got hurt I remember correctly last year and didn't
- 15:04Speaker 4: play a ton towards the end of the year. But
- 15:07Speaker 4: I mean, as far as defense positions go, you feel
- 15:12Speaker 4: like this is probably our deepest position. I'm not I'm
- 15:17Speaker 4: not saying that's a great you know, I'm not like,
- 15:19Speaker 4: oh man, this is we got a stable here, but yeah,
- 15:22Speaker 4: I mean having own cham has come over with Rob,
- 15:26Speaker 4: I think is is, like you said, very important because
- 15:28Speaker 4: he knows the defense, so he's gonna be he's gonna
- 15:30Speaker 4: help people find their position. So learning a whole new
- 15:32Speaker 4: scheme and again my single new scheme, it's it's still
- 15:35Speaker 4: a football scheme. Of these guys have been playing since
- 15:37Speaker 4: high school. Like it's not you know, this complicated, you know,
- 15:42Speaker 4: chess game out there that they're not gonna.
- 15:45Speaker 5: Be able to pick up.
- 15:45Speaker 4: But I think this is our best group, honestly.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:52Speaker 2: And the other that I think people are are challenging
- 15:55Speaker 2: that with this our secondary and the nice I think
- 16:00Speaker 2: about this four two five and the way it works,
- 16:03Speaker 2: and the I don't defensive schemes.
- 16:05Speaker 3: The extent to that is back after the video came.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Like, defensive schemes I think are one part of as
- 16:11Speaker 2: a football or sports in general, that you know, everybody
- 16:16Speaker 2: looks at offense and they can identify what a ten
- 16:20Speaker 2: or whether you know what it actually means the ten
- 16:21Speaker 2: personnel or twelve personnel.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Like you can tell, okay, there's two wide receivers right.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Defensively, there's a lot more that goes on and it's
- 16:29Speaker 2: not probably as much common knowledge, but we got the
- 16:32Speaker 2: defense has a five next to it at the end.
- 16:36Speaker 2: For secondary, that's not always gonna mean you're gonna have
- 16:39Speaker 2: five defensive backs that could you know, you got you
- 16:42Speaker 2: got a nickel that that can act as a linebacker.
- 16:45Speaker 2: More of that hybrid type of player.
- 16:48Speaker 3: But Dwayne McDougal is.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Gonna be his second year, he's gonna probably start at
- 16:52Speaker 2: that nickel spot. But again, these these guys are gonna
- 16:55Speaker 2: be interchangeable a lot, and really, I mean from a
- 16:58Speaker 2: corner standpoint, we for sure know Andrew Marshall.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Uh is going to be one of those guys.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Donovan Jones, Maury Sanders, Mario Bufort, Bly Hill, Caleb Benning,
- 17:12Speaker 2: some safeties, Rex gut three Uh, Justin Red, Jamir Khan, Jackson,
- 17:20Speaker 2: Shigg's like some of these, these are all the names
- 17:22Speaker 2: that you could be seeing in this in this rotation.
- 17:25Speaker 2: And like I said, what you want, I mean you
- 17:30Speaker 2: talk about maybe depth here, I think you want to
- 17:33Speaker 2: just see a couple of guys.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Break out and be really, really good.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I think Donovan Jones, you know, has potential to be
- 17:38Speaker 2: one of those guys opposite of Andrew Marshall. I think
- 17:42Speaker 2: Andrew Marshall right now is probably CB one, but Donovan
- 17:46Speaker 2: Jones potentially be right there. And I mean if if
- 17:49Speaker 2: you're thinking of a defensive strategy and a scheme where guys.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Might try to throw away from your top corner, you.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Know, maybe Donovan Jones has gets put in opportunities to
- 17:59Speaker 2: make plays out there. So again, I think I'm overall
- 18:04Speaker 2: like intrigued by the secondary unit. You know, can we
- 18:10Speaker 2: go make some plays back there and again not just
- 18:12Speaker 2: be placeholders, but actually guys that can either force some
- 18:17Speaker 2: turnovers or or you know, make some big stops on
- 18:20Speaker 2: third down.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Well, and Rex cut three last year as a true
- 18:25Speaker 4: true freshman, right, not even a Chrit freshman.
- 18:27Speaker 5: He looked really good.
- 18:28Speaker 4: I remember he stood out of the players of the
- 18:30Speaker 4: secondary so he's coming back, you know, another year. You know,
- 18:36Speaker 4: maybe this year is the year for Jamia Jeremiah Charles,
- 18:39Speaker 4: you know, the Dunk contest winner the last three years.
- 18:43Speaker 5: I don't know if he won, but I feel like
- 18:44Speaker 5: that's the Olers. I know that name.
- 18:46Speaker 4: He's been the Dunk contest the last three years, the
- 18:48Speaker 4: last No, this is I mean, obviously it's I should
- 18:54Speaker 4: say obviously, but the smaller group as far as positions
- 18:57Speaker 4: that you see on the field, and Andrew Marshall and
- 19:00Speaker 4: Dwayne McDougall, they're seniors, so that like they again having
- 19:06Speaker 4: older players in college football. You saw it with Indiana,
- 19:10Speaker 4: you know, you saw it with our defense two years ago.
- 19:12Speaker 4: I think it's just so much more important than people think,
- 19:15Speaker 4: especially on the defensive side, because you're just bigger and
- 19:18Speaker 4: you're just faster, and it's just that's what you.
- 19:21Speaker 5: Need on defense. And I think I do think it
- 19:23Speaker 5: means a lot.
- 19:24Speaker 4: So I think having those guys and that's why that's
- 19:27Speaker 4: why our past defense was so good last year because
- 19:28Speaker 4: we had seniors at the La Zoo on our corners
- 19:32Speaker 4: and safety.
- 19:33Speaker 5: So I still think I like our linebacker group a
- 19:37Speaker 5: little bit better.
- 19:38Speaker 4: As far as just depth wise, because there's a lot
- 19:41Speaker 4: more again older depth of the last lot of juniors,
- 19:45Speaker 4: but we do have some top betting senior talent here.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Our AI question of the day for the defense, and
- 19:53Speaker 2: I like this question too.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Are our bodies in our are our personnel?
- 20:02Speaker 2: We have big ten caliber bodies across the defense, But
- 20:04Speaker 2: the question is can our to turn that size athletics
- 20:08Speaker 2: do a fast, disruptive, four down unit, especially against the run.
- 20:13Speaker 3: I think my take on that is.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Just like anything, I hope and I think there's capability there,
- 20:25Speaker 2: But just like our offense, there's not one guy on
- 20:29Speaker 2: this unit that I can say this guy is a
- 20:31Speaker 2: breakout star.
- 20:32Speaker 5: He is.
- 20:33Speaker 3: He is a top five, a top three player.
- 20:37Speaker 2: At his position in the Big ten and can just
- 20:41Speaker 2: be an absolute menace.
- 20:43Speaker 3: On the side of the ball.
- 20:45Speaker 2: There's guys we talked about that could potentially get to
- 20:48Speaker 2: that point and break out, but there's nothing that's been
- 20:51Speaker 2: proven yet with any of these guys at the Big
- 20:54Speaker 2: ten level. And that's that's where, Yeah, I think we
- 21:00Speaker 2: We've heard a lot of things and it could be good,
- 21:03Speaker 2: but it just the unknown of all of it, and
- 21:05Speaker 2: obviously putting in a new scheme in a new system,
- 21:07Speaker 2: which some people are gonna be thrilled about because they
- 21:09Speaker 2: hated the three three five, or some people are gonna
- 21:11Speaker 2: be skeptical because they love the three three five. If
- 21:13Speaker 2: there's a lot of moving parts, and like, I think
- 21:17Speaker 2: there's hope there, but it's gonna be hard to tell
- 21:21Speaker 2: even these first few games. And I shouldn't say that
- 21:23Speaker 2: the first few games. I think maybe we'll tell us
- 21:25Speaker 2: something as well, but that's better games.
- 21:29Speaker 5: So that's we're gonna look, We're gonna look better first
- 21:32Speaker 5: few games.
- 21:32Speaker 3: We're gonna look, you know, we will, we will look better.
- 21:36Speaker 2: And and I think when you watch our first three games,
- 21:38Speaker 2: there's some specific things to look for. I mean, obviously,
- 21:41Speaker 2: if any of these teams go out and score twenty
- 21:43Speaker 2: to thirty points on us, regardless of whatever offense, does.
- 21:46Speaker 5: You that that butt is gonna be a little bit.
- 21:52Speaker 2: But at the same time, like I think if you
- 21:54Speaker 2: can watch us early on on how some of these
- 21:58Speaker 2: I mean, I'm all downs are part you know, third
- 22:01Speaker 2: de but I'm your times where we need to get
- 22:04Speaker 2: a third and six stop right or it's first and
- 22:07Speaker 2: ten from the eighteen yard line, Like in those situations,
- 22:12Speaker 2: what happens and what are we doing from a schematic standpoint,
- 22:16Speaker 2: what players are in the game, who's making plays?
- 22:18Speaker 3: Hopefully there are plays being made.
- 22:21Speaker 2: That's where we're gonna get some telling points here in
- 22:23Speaker 2: these first three games. And yet you hope that the
- 22:25Speaker 2: score is not an issue, but it definitely could be.
- 22:30Speaker 2: And so in those scenarios, really it becomes even more important,
- 22:34Speaker 2: like can can this defense produce in the time and
- 22:38Speaker 2: situation of a football game before we even get to
- 22:41Speaker 2: you know, our Big ten schedule, which is gonna bring
- 22:43Speaker 2: its own challenges as well. So I'll be honest, I
- 22:48Speaker 2: think I'm a little more excited to watch our defense
- 22:51Speaker 2: than our offense these first three games. I mean that's
- 22:54Speaker 2: just me personally, because I think our offense is going
- 22:59Speaker 2: to be able to put some points of the out.
- 23:00Speaker 2: We're gonna see some we're gonna see boom and bus
- 23:02Speaker 2: like we're gonna I think I can be a little
- 23:05Speaker 2: more predictable of what we're gonna see. Defensively, I'm I'm
- 23:08Speaker 2: curious with brand new scheme too, of what that looks
- 23:11Speaker 2: like in these first three games.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Hey guys, off cub who which defensive player do you
- 23:18Speaker 4: think is gonna be the one of your most excited
- 23:20Speaker 4: to see.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I'm excited for Owen Chamberliss is probably a compound answer,
- 23:24Speaker 2: but I am. I think just seeing a guy like
- 23:27Speaker 2: that transition over from the Mountain West and being more
- 23:31Speaker 2: the QB on on the defensive side, I'm I'm excited
- 23:35Speaker 2: to see. I mean, if I think he has potentially,
- 23:37Speaker 2: you know, to lead us in tackles, I'm hoping his
- 23:40Speaker 2: body and everything is able to be one of those guys.
- 23:43Speaker 3: That flies around the field. I'm not comparing him.
- 23:46Speaker 2: To Levante David, but if he can be a poor
- 23:49Speaker 2: man's version of Levante.
- 23:50Speaker 5: David, that that would be nice.
- 23:53Speaker 4: I'd probably say on the defensive line, I thought he
- 23:56Speaker 4: looked great yeah last year, so I'm excited to see
- 23:59Speaker 4: what I have this year.
- 24:01Speaker 2: But I know listener Jackson Weeks, he's very excited about
- 24:06Speaker 2: Williams win Are. I think he thinks that that guy
- 24:08Speaker 2: could be our breakout player on the defensive side of
- 24:11Speaker 2: the ball. And again, if that's the case, I think
- 24:14Speaker 2: our defense could be very much improved here in twenty
- 24:17Speaker 2: twenty six.
- 24:20Speaker 4: He's supposed to be right, here's the big get. We
- 24:23Speaker 4: paid a lot of money for him. I'm assuming I
- 24:25Speaker 4: don't know the exact dollars.
- 24:27Speaker 5: But I don't know.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Do you think, Okay, that we've talked of the defense,
- 24:32Speaker 4: which side is gonna be better this year?
- 24:38Speaker 3: I'm I'm gonna say defense.
- 24:39Speaker 2: But I like defense, so yeah, I think I think
- 24:43Speaker 2: your defense needs to be very strong. I mean in
- 24:44Speaker 2: any any any sport really, but in football, especially in
- 24:48Speaker 2: the Big Ten, you get you're not You're not you're
- 24:50Speaker 2: not beating teams.
- 24:51Speaker 3: I mean you could, but it's not. We're not gonna
- 24:54Speaker 3: be We're not gonna be in.
- 24:55Speaker 2: The thirties and forties very often every game. You know,
- 24:58Speaker 2: you gotta you gotta to beat teams twenty to fourteen.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Sometimes you gotta be able to do that if you're.
- 25:07Speaker 4: The games, well, there are those the games we win
- 25:11Speaker 4: if we wasn't it we score over thirty points or
- 25:14Speaker 4: we're like undefeated the last three years. But if we
- 25:17Speaker 4: don't score over thirty, we're horrible.
- 25:21Speaker 5: That would are there's some stats. I don't know what
- 25:23Speaker 5: it is.
- 25:28Speaker 3: So what about you offense defense?
- 25:32Speaker 4: I think our offense is can be better than our defense. Well, yeah,
- 25:36Speaker 4: I think our offense canna better than our defense.
- 25:38Speaker 3: I don't know special team.
- 25:39Speaker 4: I want our defense. I want a special teams. There
- 25:42Speaker 4: we go, well, who knows we lost that player and
- 25:47Speaker 4: we lost our return man.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Yeah, already already thirty on Friday when we when we
- 25:51Speaker 2: had our podcast on Tim and he did the most
- 25:53Speaker 2: overlooked thing and I've overlooked it myself, has been our
- 25:56Speaker 2: special teams. It's funny how last offseason, how big of
- 25:59Speaker 2: a top point that was. And this year, you know,
- 26:02Speaker 2: you have everybody returning. Yeah, Eckler left, you get you
- 26:06Speaker 2: get co coordinators. Uh and and I just it's not
- 26:10Speaker 2: even getting discussed in any corner.
- 26:12Speaker 3: So you hope that doesn't.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Take I think we figured out the approach.
- 26:15Speaker 4: We're not gonna be as good as last year because
- 26:17Speaker 4: we lost you know, we lost our He wasn't best
- 26:21Speaker 4: in the nation.
- 26:21Speaker 5: He was pretty freaking good.
- 26:22Speaker 4: At returning to the ball. But I think we I
- 26:26Speaker 4: think we know we we know how we want to
- 26:28Speaker 4: do it. We might not have a guy there calling
- 26:30Speaker 4: it every time, but Brett Maher was here last year too,
- 26:32Speaker 4: wasn't he He's a COT So.
- 26:36Speaker 5: Hopefully there was some osmosis there.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I thought you were gonna say, I think we figured
- 26:41Speaker 2: out special teams and now it's gonna be like figure
- 26:44Speaker 2: out how to snap and hold the ball.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Great, I think we figured out what we want to do.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Continuing to execute is a different question.
- 26:53Speaker 3: All right, Well, that'll do it for today. We'll be
- 26:55Speaker 3: back tomorrow. I guess we won't be back.
- 26:58Speaker 2: You'll be hearing from Dak for Wacky Daki Wednesday. I
- 27:03Speaker 2: just I just want to say, last week, Dak, I
- 27:07Speaker 2: think went for I don't know about five minutes or
- 27:09Speaker 2: so and.
- 27:11Speaker 3: We got done, and that goes, how long was that?
- 27:17Speaker 2: And you know, we talk about trying to keep these
- 27:19Speaker 2: episodes shorter and more to the point since we're doing
- 27:23Speaker 2: them now daily, and Dak goes. I told him said,
- 27:27Speaker 2: I think you just made it past five minutes. He goes, Really,
- 27:31Speaker 2: I feel like I was going for like fifteen to
- 27:33Speaker 2: twenty minutes. So we'll we get for a little Wacky
- 27:38Speaker 2: Daky here tomorrow on Wacky Daki Wednesday.
