- 0:00We're back here for day two of the Nike Outdoor National
- 0:03Championships, USATF U20 Championships and beautiful
- 0:07Eugene, OR Hope you enjoyed yesterday's day one mini
- 0:11interviews, micro interviews right here on site at the Gill
- 0:14Athletics coaches hospitality suite down by the 200m star.
- 0:18We're going to do it all over again, but maybe we'll have some
- 0:20repeats. Hopefully we'll have a bunch of
- 0:22new people and we'll just interview them and ask them how
- 0:24they're doing, how's it mean to be here in Eugene, OR and what
- 0:27their athletes are up to. So stay tuned and let's get
- 0:30started. Field is.
- 0:32Down here, fine. All right, so here we go with
- 0:34our first interview of Day 2 at the Nike Outdoor National
- 0:37Championships. Coach, won't you introduce
- 0:38yourself and tell us where you from?
- 0:40Yeah, I'm Coach Nick Thiel and I'm from Kalispell, Mt and we
- 0:44have a couple athletes here from the Flathead, Polson area,
- 0:47Hamilton, so western Montana. And yeah, we came in a couple
- 0:51days ago and I had a couple of middle schoolers run yesterday
- 0:55and today and a high schooler going to Miles so.
- 0:57Now I've been to Montana, I think just once and I had to
- 1:00drive from like Montana State to University of Montana, Big
- 1:03State. But it's it is up here and we
- 1:06run from the Midwest. So I don't know how far things
- 1:08are. Do you drive to Eugene or is
- 1:09that a flight or? Yeah, some people might fly.
- 1:12We drove just, you know, you have enough athletes and and
- 1:16family and everything drive is good.
- 1:18So it's 11 1/2 hours of drive time and we we drive a lot.
- 1:23That's kind of a disadvantage of living in a rural state.
- 1:25Yeah, yeah. I mean, our nearest AA school
- 1:30really outside of our town is an hour drive and it's further from
- 1:34there. So an hour to five hours is a
- 1:35common drive for us. Yeah, I told you I host the
- 1:37podcast here that we're on right now.
- 1:39And last year I went and did a kind of an ambitious project.
- 1:42I interviewed 1 high school coach from every state to talk
- 1:45about their outdoor track and how do you qualify, what events
- 1:48do you do things like that. And one of the questions that we
- 1:50asked each state was do you do a like a meet a champion.
- 1:54So, you know, you have different classes here in Montana.
- 1:57You come back a week later and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:59And I came here, the coach that we had that volunteered this
- 2:01time to do the interview with us from Montana.
- 2:03But I remember his, his response to that was like, dude, do you
- 2:06know how big the state is? He goes, it's hard to get
- 2:08everybody to the state meet. Yeah.
- 2:10He goes to try to do it all over again.
- 2:11He's like impossible in Montana. Yeah.
- 2:13It is hard. We do have a top ten meet, but
- 2:16they separate out Easton from West because it is, I think it's
- 2:20a nine hour drive across the state.
- 2:21So to do it east and West makes sense, yeah.
- 2:24You know what, Texas, they always talk about how far it is.
- 2:26Montana. You got it there, too.
- 2:27Yeah. What is Texas left to right?
- 2:29Oh my God, I think in calendar you have to do it by calendar
- 2:33like. Monday through Wednesday, hey.
- 2:36Nick, you must be good luck because you know today, as we
- 2:38started yesterday, was beautiful.
- 2:39Weather wise. Today it started.
- 2:42I won't call it typical Oregon weather, but you know, it was
- 2:44overcast, so Sprinkles talking to you.
- 2:46The sun has come. Out.
- 2:47Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. Well.
- 2:50What do you got going on today? What what athletes are between
- 2:52today? We can watch them and report.
- 2:54Yeah, actually we had. 2 middle schoolers.
- 2:56Quinn Delaney and Ada Thiel in the middle school 800 Yeah, I
- 3:00saw those. Yeah.
- 3:01So one was a second off for PR, but she ran a good mile
- 3:05yesterday and PR yesterday in the mile and then.
- 3:09And we also had Ada Thiel who ran mile yesterday also.
- 3:12And technically, well, I don't say technically she PR Ed by the
- 3:17record books by 12 seconds, but she had run that time actually
- 3:24on her own in a workout being paced.
- 3:26Yeah, but it's it's not official, right?
- 3:28So. So is.
- 3:30The PR kind of, yeah, a big pair, but anyway that was great.
- 3:33She won her heat and 7th, so just off the podium but exciting
- 3:38and then she ran the 800 today and she got eight, one second PR
- 3:42so. It's the middle of June and
- 3:45you've got kids that are PR in and near PR in that says good
- 3:49coaching if you keep them motivated and.
- 3:50Keep them going. There is that.
- 3:52Yeah, I think Catch 22, you know, you're trying to stretch
- 3:55out the the peak in their season, the middle school
- 3:57season. Some, some of them are done two
- 4:00weeks ago, some of them are done 456 weeks ago.
- 4:02So like trying to figure out, do you get a little micro cycle in
- 4:05there or do you just try and hold that taper or so?
- 4:09Yeah, it is interesting. But I mean, they're motivated
- 4:11kids and always being here. People run.
- 4:13Faster. That's.
- 4:14Right. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:14So walk. Through the gates.
- 4:15If you're faster, if you're not motivated here, yeah.
- 4:17What are you doing in track? And field, yeah, I mean, this is
- 4:19the Mecca, right? This is it.
- 4:20That's. Right, Nick, thank you so much,
- 4:21man appreciate it being here, enjoying.
- 4:24It's so fun to watch your athletes compete and honestly
- 4:26for me, you know, I'm a coach advocate, so I'm always working
- 4:29to up listen, honor you to be able to see you guys and gals do
- 4:31your craft. That's the that's the real
- 4:32blessing for us. So.
- 4:33Thanks for being awesome. Yeah.
- 4:34Thank you. All right, we're back here
- 4:38Hayward Field Nike outdoor national championships for our
- 4:41next little micro interview here and we got, you know, some of my
- 4:44favorite people. I've got throws coaches here, so
- 4:46let's do another throws coach here.
- 4:47Why don't you introduce yourself and where you're from?
- 4:49I'm Colin Post. And I'm at Wake Forest
- 4:51University. And, you know, insider secret,
- 4:54this is actually take two for for this interview here.
- 4:58Colin, what what are you doing here?
- 4:59What's going on? You got athletes or Yeah.
- 5:01We had we had an athlete feeding in the women's U20 javelin and
- 5:05she came out and ended up 6th place, got on the podium, so we
- 5:08had a pretty good day. How do you you know college
- 5:12track and field is so hard in regards to you know, how do you
- 5:14qualify for the championships and the level you know you guys
- 5:17are, it's all your fault. You guys are just coaching kids
- 5:20so much better. How do you manage as far as
- 5:23coaching with that kid to now come back a week later or two
- 5:26weeks later, whatever you know it might be, how do you keep
- 5:28extending that that season for them?
- 5:30Well, a lot of it was just let's cross our fingers and hold on
- 5:33this year, you know, she had a little bit of back injury so it
- 5:37was up and down. So we got to the end of the
- 5:39season. She wanted to do this meet.
- 5:41I said, look, I can't change your training at this point.
- 5:44Back off for a couple days, ramp back up for two weeks and then
- 5:47cross her fingers were still in in some somewhat of a condition
- 5:51when we get there. I know sometimes we try to
- 5:53overthink it a little bit. It's like, you know, it's a
- 5:55week, Mike, not two months. That might be a whole different
- 5:58aspect. If you're doing something like
- 5:59that now you're here, you're competing with her and that
- 6:02Javelin recruiting as well. Yeah, we're hanging out watching
- 6:05some tracks. See if anybody make good Demon
- 6:08Deacons. You, you've done this for a long
- 6:10time, so you're seeing the the change in the incident of late
- 6:14when you go to a meet like this today, 2025, how different is it
- 6:18from 2015 as far as recruiting and all the things that have
- 6:21changed? I think we just got to be more
- 6:23focused now, right? I I got to know who can come in
- 6:27and help faster. Yeah.
- 6:30Yeah. Do you?
- 6:31Have to have difficult conversations with kids that
- 6:33maybe, you know, again, 10 years ago, you know, it's like, Oh
- 6:35yeah, I'd love for you to walk on or books.
- 6:37And now it's like, you know, it's just, it's not my fault.
- 6:40I, I It's the system that I'm. Handed Absolutely.
- 6:42There's a lot of conversations being had about due to the the
- 6:46nature of NCAA right now, I can't give you a shot.
- 6:50Right. Yeah, makes sense.
- 6:51Makes sense. Well, I told you earlier
- 6:53yesterday, I met one of your former athletes who grad
- 6:55transferred to North Carolina. Thomas.
- 6:57He spoke so highly of you, man, and just you're doing a great
- 7:00job, really do. Appreciate you.
- 7:01Yeah. Appreciate it.
- 7:02Awesome. Thanks, Colin.
- 7:05All right, let's keep the interviews going.
- 7:07This this is a fun one. I'm I'm really excited about
- 7:09this one, so let's hop right into it.
- 7:11Why don't you introduce yourself and tell us who you're you're
- 7:13here with what team or track club?
- 7:15Yeah. Sure.
- 7:16My name is Donna here and we're here with the Nike Elite
- 7:20program. My daughter was selected a
- 7:22couple years ago to do that. She also is in high school,
- 7:25King's High School, just South or north of Seattle area Small
- 7:31Kitchen High School and she throws the primarily throws the
- 7:34hammer. Yeah, so I've learned a little
- 7:36bit about the elite program from our NSFANSAF people and we
- 7:40support it with some equipment, things like that.
- 7:42What kind of support do they do for for her?
- 7:45Like how are they helping her out with her a bit?
- 7:47The hammer specifically. OK, well, they give her.
- 7:51They pay for the Nike outdoor meet, which we're just in
- 7:54Seattle, but they'll pay. They'll put her in a hotel here
- 7:57and they'll give us gas money. Then they give her to the indoor
- 8:04New York. So that's a travel.
- 8:06She gets to compete and and throw the weight and I think
- 8:09she's done the shot there as well.
- 8:11So that's, and they have a whole program for about four days
- 8:13there with some hospitality. They put it in a hotel,
- 8:16transportation is all taken care of.
- 8:19And then the other thing they do is they give you a meat of your
- 8:22choice. So if you want to come down to
- 8:24Prefontaine, if you want to go to California to Arcadia Relays,
- 8:29Mount SAC. So she went to Mount SAC Junior
- 8:32Olympics are in Savannah. So I think that's going to be
- 8:34our our trip for her and they'll pay the airfare and and do the
- 8:39travel support for that. And so and.
- 8:40Some kind of mentorship with other right former elite
- 8:44throwers. Right.
- 8:45So they'll have, in fact, they had a breakfast this morning.
- 8:47There were some Olympians in there that they got to mingle
- 8:49with and just some of them told their story and they can see,
- 8:52you know, what they did with their education.
- 8:54Did they, you know, become an Olympian and then go to college
- 8:57and become a nurse? Or.
- 8:58Or vice versa, have kids now what they're doing and they're
- 9:01coaching. So they get that and they have
- 9:04monthly. We have monthly.
- 9:06Well, not many, but there's Zoom meetings.
- 9:09They get together and they will have people talk about
- 9:12nutrition, talk about training, offseason.
- 9:16They might have Olympians that they'll have breakouts.
- 9:18So then the throwers will have Deanna Price online and we'll be
- 9:22able to talk to her about, well, how do you train before they
- 9:24meet or how do you get ready six weeks out?
- 9:27Yeah, before the Olympics and. Things like that.
- 9:28They can ask those questions and then they build a rapport with
- 9:31them and then sometimes they get to see them at a meet like, you
- 9:35know, like U 20s or something when.
- 9:37They're out here. And how's that been working out?
- 9:38She threw yesterday, I believe. Right, Right.
- 9:41OK. So U 20s very competitive year.
- 9:46And so she went out, she had a great series, went out and threw
- 9:52really close to her best, which IS1861846 something like that.
- 9:58186 Oh, I shouldn't know this. Anyway, she threw like 184.
- 10:02So she was just a couple feet off to open up with sex and
- 10:05saying OK, if you want to find the whole big monkey off your
- 10:08back. Anyways, her fifth throw she
- 10:10unleashed 1. She was in second place.
- 10:14I think she was in the second place already, but she better
- 10:16that more to a 190, which is a personal best.
- 10:21And then it's also the age group record 1718 year old being a
- 10:24junior in high school. So that's where it ended.
- 10:28The one he throw was a 196, so she was pretty close to that.
- 10:32We're a little disappointed there's no team.
- 10:33Normally that would have been. A team.
- 10:35To Pan Am, but we kind of saw that coming.
- 10:38With some information. That came out.
- 10:40But, and selfishly, you told me she threw the gill hammer.
- 10:44Yeah, because it was a record they had to impound everything
- 10:49they carried and and she said it was this, it was this silver one
- 10:53that's and they took that one back.
- 10:55She also had her pull on it and she carried that one out with
- 10:58her and they went and re measured, re weighed that and it
- 11:02was perfect. And we love supporting young
- 11:06athletes, old athletes, you know, it's all about what they
- 11:08do on that field or in that circle.
- 11:10And so we're excited to work with NSA, NSAF and work with
- 11:14Nike Elite and your daughter and just, it's really cool.
- 11:16That's very, very awesome. If we had more time, I'd talk
- 11:19about the background, how she got into Hammer because that's
- 11:21cool too. But thank you so much for being
- 11:22here with us today. Thank you.
- 11:24And stay tuned to Sunday another.
- 11:26Competition. Let's go Sunday.
- 11:28All right. I'll be paying attention.
- 11:29All right. Awesome all right, that's going
- 11:32to do it for day two of the Nike outdoor national championships
- 11:36with the coaches hospitality sponsored by Gill Athletics.
- 11:40The rain kind of dampened the number of interviews that we
- 11:43could do we didn't have great weather today.
- 11:45However, that weather did not dampen the athletes out on the
- 11:49track. What an amazing, just an amazing
- 11:51amount of performances today. These coaches are coaching their
- 11:54tails off and so super excited to be able to showcase them in
- 11:58our small way here on the podcast.
- 12:00Check us out tomorrow. We'll come back for day three.
- 12:02We're hoping. We're praying for better
- 12:04weather, but I know we're going to see some real fire on the
- 12:07track. So thanks for listening and
- 12:08we'll talk soon.
