- 0:13Speaker 2: We're here in our iHeartMedia Studios Live audience with us eating, drinking, beverages, flying,
- 0:20Speaker 2: and Jason Kandell, the head coach of the Yukon Husky
- 0:23Speaker 2: with us first of twelve shows we get to do coach.
- 0:27Speaker 2: This one in person is always great because folks here
- 0:29Speaker 2: have questions. They'll ask you and talk about what you're
- 0:33Speaker 2: up to in terms of getting his team together.
- 0:36Speaker 1: But first of all, welcome.
- 0:38Speaker 2: We really appreciate you being here because we know your history,
- 0:43Speaker 2: winning tradition. Eighty one wins and ten years an assistant
- 0:48Speaker 2: before that. That had to be the building block I
- 0:51Speaker 2: would think of your career because you start there as
- 0:54Speaker 2: an assistant, I think, right, and then you become the
- 0:57Speaker 2: head guy.
- 0:57Speaker 1: You kind of grow into the role the pards.
- 1:00Speaker 3: It is in great history and has turnout the twity
- 1:04Speaker 3: is hunting the parents to play with the air of
- 1:05Speaker 3: Paris and work ahead and you.
- 1:07Speaker 4: To be able to see how it's in the right way.
- 1:09Speaker 4: And you know, many of us were able to follow.
- 1:12Speaker 3: In the history and you know the long time a
- 1:14Speaker 3: long successes. But I think I really lay platform and
- 1:16Speaker 3: there relieve you sid the fires, can you young man
- 1:20Speaker 3: and put as a position to be successful and Pat
- 1:22Speaker 3: kick ross put them up to get to the other
- 1:25Speaker 3: and have some.
- 1:25Speaker 4: There years there as an assistant and you know, perting
- 1:29Speaker 4: in to hire me to get a head coach and
- 1:31Speaker 4: success and then you're on there and mount the guys
- 1:34Speaker 4: and the pot the game players forget. So okay are
- 1:38Speaker 4: up here look the fourth the two gressias.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Let's start with your beginnings.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Uh, when you're a player, do you start thinking about
- 1:47Speaker 2: I'm gonna coach this game some day or does it
- 1:50Speaker 2: just sort of happen for someone like you?
- 1:53Speaker 3: Mean, was you know you're gonna get a chance for
- 1:58Speaker 3: a two year street to go and they want to
- 2:01Speaker 3: do you know the crazy ants and alca bar and.
- 2:03Speaker 4: The kind of thank you, but we would get a
- 2:05Speaker 4: chance to you. This is one agree that path you're
- 2:08Speaker 4: you know, hidvoted by the people around you and feel
- 2:10Speaker 4: like the wor right.
- 2:12Speaker 5: And I think that you have coaches for or you
- 2:15Speaker 5: know most you know influential people in my life. Right,
- 2:19Speaker 5: So to have the opportunity to send the elevator back
- 2:22Speaker 5: down and to lift some guys up like those guys
- 2:24Speaker 5: did for me, you know, from ages fifteen, sixteen to
- 2:27Speaker 5: all the way to twenty two or twenty three. Man,
- 2:30Speaker 5: I just thought that was an opportunity I couldn't pass up,
- 2:32Speaker 5: you know. Unfortunately, you know, I got an education degree.
- 2:35Speaker 5: I was happy to coach three sports, coach football. You know,
- 2:38Speaker 5: can pick up a stipend in basketball, maybe get on
- 2:40Speaker 5: the you know, coach track or baseball in the spring,
- 2:42Speaker 5: just to make a living. And but I think you
- 2:44Speaker 5: really wanted to educate, wanted to teach, and you know,
- 2:47Speaker 5: here we are today because I think of that platform,
- 2:49Speaker 5: and I think there's probably a silver lining there in
- 2:51Speaker 5: a sense of young coaches to the today's world think
- 2:53Speaker 5: that you know, first and foremost, so you want to
- 2:55Speaker 5: get into this profession because of the financial gains. And
- 2:57Speaker 5: it's it's not that, it's it's not that at all,
- 2:59Speaker 5: because that's the reason you'll you'll fall flat on your face.
- 3:02Speaker 1: You got to you got to really invest in.
- 3:03Speaker 5: People, and you got to really try to pull and
- 3:06Speaker 5: make them, you know, to be the best version of
- 3:08Speaker 5: themselves if you can. And I think that's kind of
- 3:10Speaker 5: you know, why. You know, so many of us that
- 3:12Speaker 5: were fortunate at the play at Mantuin. We're doing what
- 3:14Speaker 5: we're doing at a really high level.
- 3:15Speaker 2: It's funny you're saying this because Dan Hurley, the basketball coach,
- 3:19Speaker 2: sat in that same seat and told me similar story
- 3:22Speaker 2: about her.
- 3:23Speaker 1: He's a teacher, he taught history for.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Nine years, coaching on the side, try to make a living,
- 3:29Speaker 2: make ends meet. Now he becomes a coach. You know,
- 3:32Speaker 2: it goes on to great success. As you began at
- 3:36Speaker 2: Toledo as the assistant, when you took over as a
- 3:39Speaker 2: head coach, how much different was that.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I always wonder some guys can't do it or women.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You know, they're the assistant, they're great at it, But
- 3:49Speaker 2: being the bottom line, final decision maker, that's a little different,
- 3:53Speaker 2: isn't it.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Well.
- 3:54Speaker 5: I think you always you there's always a pathway in
- 3:58Speaker 5: you know, in any in any profession, elevation in your
- 4:00Speaker 5: career is going to happen by you know, doing a
- 4:02Speaker 5: really good job and being where your feet are. So
- 4:05Speaker 5: you know, I think in life, we all, we all
- 4:06Speaker 5: can learn from our past mistakes or our successes, and
- 4:09Speaker 5: I think we all want to prepare for the future
- 4:11Speaker 5: and everybody's excited for what's next. But man, oh man,
- 4:13Speaker 5: if you can't be present and be where your feet
- 4:15Speaker 5: are and and really make the most, you know, enough
- 4:17Speaker 5: faith in myself that I'd have the opportunity to do it,
- 4:19Speaker 5: And when I got that opportunity, I do it at
- 4:20Speaker 5: a really high level because I feel like there's total investment,
- 4:24Speaker 5: you know, and when you when you get into something
- 4:26Speaker 5: and you if you're doing it, if you have purpose
- 4:29Speaker 5: and you have a passion for what you're doing, and
- 4:31Speaker 5: you're it's those things, aren't you know, uh accolades or
- 4:35Speaker 5: wins and loss oriented, they're to try to help people
- 4:38Speaker 5: be the best version of themselves.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Man, I think you don't think you can go wrong.
- 4:41Speaker 5: So is a transition a hard one? It is, but
- 4:45Speaker 5: it's it's you know, you go from a position coach
- 4:47Speaker 5: to being a coordinator that just the people you're leading
- 4:48Speaker 5: the room gets a little bit bigger, you know. But
- 4:51Speaker 5: I think that young people are very smart. Sometimes I
- 4:53Speaker 5: don't give them enough credit for what they are. You've
- 4:55Speaker 5: got to be who you are. You got to be
- 4:57Speaker 5: yourself when you're in front of them, and you know
- 4:58Speaker 5: you can't fake it because they'll find out out really
- 5:00Speaker 5: really fast.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yeah, stay in a moment, right You're you're ending speech
- 5:05Speaker 2: today after practice was a little bit about social media
- 5:08Speaker 2: when you started coaching and you when you played a
- 5:11Speaker 2: high school level and all that, how much of an
- 5:13Speaker 2: impact did social media have and how much different is
- 5:16Speaker 2: it today and how much of.
- 5:20Speaker 1: A problem can that be for a head coach.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Well, I think that we all have those platforms to
- 5:27Speaker 5: maybe get news, We have those platforms to maybe you know,
- 5:32Speaker 5: highlight our brand. You know, there's lots of different ways
- 5:34Speaker 5: to use that. And I'm not saying that it's all bad.
- 5:37Speaker 5: I just think that for me as a young person,
- 5:41Speaker 5: you know, I got a real issue with young kids
- 5:42Speaker 5: that you know, spend a bunch of time trying to
- 5:44Speaker 5: get people to impress people that don't give a damn
- 5:47Speaker 5: about them, right, But they can't call their aunt and
- 5:49Speaker 5: their bomb and tell them that they love them and
- 5:50Speaker 5: hope they have a good day. I just that's that's
- 5:52Speaker 5: backwards to me. So, you know, I think that you know,
- 5:57Speaker 5: done the right way, it is a great Like I said,
- 5:59Speaker 5: it's it's a great platform to help use what you
- 6:02Speaker 5: wanted to use for. But manet to get caught on
- 6:04Speaker 5: that thing and just sit there on your phone all
- 6:06Speaker 5: day and scroll and look in my gosh, like you
- 6:08Speaker 5: can end up in a rabbit hole and like wait,
- 6:10Speaker 5: how did I get here? So I think young people's challenges,
- 6:13Speaker 5: whether it's social media, whether it's a video game, whether
- 6:16Speaker 5: it's campus life, whether it's extracurricular things. Can you get
- 6:20Speaker 5: up every day and put your energy in the right place?
- 6:22Speaker 5: And you know, if you really are driven to be
- 6:25Speaker 5: a National Football League player someday, it takes what it takes.
- 6:28Speaker 1: There's not any shortcuts to that.
- 6:30Speaker 5: So you know, you've got to be really cautious and
- 6:32Speaker 5: really careful where you put your time and your energy.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Jason Kandell, we take a quick break back with the
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yukon Football Coaches Show.
