- 0:26Speaker 1: Moore on a Thursday when he's introduced to the media.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Guy already knows him. Brooks Cabina spent this year covering
- 0:33Speaker 1: the Eagles for the Athletic and can get him on
- 0:36Speaker 1: Twitter x at b Kabina, of course, was previous at
- 0:38Speaker 1: the Advocate, worked right here in Houston where we are
- 0:40Speaker 1: today now in Philly. Bro it's good at chat man.
- 0:43Speaker 2: How are you man?
- 0:45Speaker 3: I've been sleeping on and off for the last thirty
- 0:47Speaker 3: six hours, so you caught me while I'm recognizant.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Glad to hear that.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Man.
- 0:51Speaker 1: That's I guess our game. We tie this out pretty well.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Give me a reaction to like first thought, Kellen Moore
- 1:00Speaker 1: taking the Saints job.
- 1:02Speaker 3: First reaction, Yeah, I mean this is expected the Saints.
- 1:06Speaker 3: We're holding out to get a chance to interview him,
- 1:08Speaker 3: and by that point he was their top choice, and
- 1:13Speaker 3: by last week it was a given that he was
- 1:16Speaker 3: going there. So it's interesting for him to get in
- 1:19Speaker 3: there be a head coach after three times as an
- 1:21Speaker 3: off as the coordinator. It's his time just navigated, just
- 1:25Speaker 3: an excellent offense and really a different way of doing
- 1:28Speaker 3: it in his career. Obviously, the talent pool will be different.
- 1:32Speaker 3: There's a different expectation for this team immediately, but Kellen
- 1:35Speaker 3: Moore's earned the opportunity. It'll be interesting to see.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Tell us about I mean one year there, but tell
- 1:42Speaker 1: us about Kellen Moore, Like if someone asked you to
- 1:45Speaker 1: describe him personally professionally, what do you say.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, he's not going to hit a bunch
- 1:51Speaker 3: of decibels when he talks, But that doesn't mean he's quiet.
- 1:54Speaker 3: You know, during the times that we've got a chance
- 1:56Speaker 3: to interact with. You know, he's not someone in weeks
- 2:00Speaker 3: to weeks that will delve deeply into this scheme, but
- 2:03Speaker 3: you can tell that he understands it. But behind the scenes,
- 2:05Speaker 3: when you get a chance to hear about him from
- 2:07Speaker 3: players whenever they played the Cowboys for the first time.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I did a deeper story talking to pretty much every
- 2:14Speaker 3: assistant coach who had either coached him with the Cowboys
- 2:17Speaker 3: or coach with him with the Cowboys. And the thing
- 2:20Speaker 3: that I was really trying to figure out it kind
- 2:21Speaker 3: of helps towards understanding.
- 2:23Speaker 2: With the head coach, is well, what kind of coach
- 2:25Speaker 2: is he? How does he motivate? How does he connect
- 2:27Speaker 2: with players?
- 2:28Speaker 3: And the thing that kept coming out was he's not
- 2:30Speaker 3: the guy that's going to stand in the middle of
- 2:32Speaker 3: give a big speech. How he connects to a players
- 2:34Speaker 3: going up to him and saying, Hey, what do you
- 2:36Speaker 3: want to run?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Like? What do you like?
- 2:38Speaker 3: What works for you? And by getting them invested in
- 2:40Speaker 3: the play and what's happening on the field, gets them
- 2:43Speaker 3: excited to be a part of it. That stemmed back
- 2:45Speaker 3: to his Boys of State days, you know, drawing up
- 2:47Speaker 3: trick players and the like, just having fun playing football,
- 2:51Speaker 3: and that showed in the way that they played throughout
- 2:53Speaker 3: this year. I mean, they ran the ball more than
- 2:56Speaker 3: any Eagles team has since nineteen seventy eight, and that's
- 2:58Speaker 3: only because the meeting was Weekly eighteen game, they chucked
- 3:02Speaker 3: the ball else a been nineteen fifty one. That is
- 3:04Speaker 3: definitely not Kellen Moore, And it made moot any study
- 3:07Speaker 3: I did in the offseason what he did with the Cowboys,
- 3:09Speaker 3: but they didn't have to Saquon Barkley or this offensive
- 3:12Speaker 3: line or you know, by week four, this was a
- 3:14Speaker 3: team still trying to figure us out self out offensively
- 3:17Speaker 3: and then again more.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Someone who goes to his players and listens.
- 3:21Speaker 3: This wasn't just happening into rec relations to Kellen Moore's
- 3:23Speaker 3: happening as a whole coaching staff. But guys like Lane
- 3:27Speaker 3: Johnson the right tackle, and Landon Dickers and the left
- 3:29Speaker 3: guard were speaking, I'm why are we not handing the
- 3:32Speaker 3: ball to Saquon as much why are we not running
- 3:34Speaker 3: the ball? We need to run the ball. And coming
- 3:36Speaker 3: out of that bye Weekday leaned really heavily into it,
- 3:39Speaker 3: and a lot of that had to do with what
- 3:41Speaker 3: Moore was able to do throughout that time and finding
- 3:43Speaker 3: spots where Barkley fit and then where the passing game fit.
- 3:46Speaker 2: It was different week.
- 3:47Speaker 3: To week, so you know, that's the main gist of
- 3:50Speaker 3: what Moore showed throughout the year and his growth as
- 3:52Speaker 3: a coach, and I think, really, why Aaron's a head
- 3:54Speaker 3: coach opportunity at this point?
- 3:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Brooks Scabina is our guess. It's funny when you
- 3:59Speaker 1: look back at how the seat and started for the
- 4:00Speaker 1: Eagles of two and two, and I mean Siriani's john
- 4:04Speaker 1: with fans, and you think about how it ends. That
- 4:07Speaker 1: feels like a completely different reality. But how much of
- 4:10Speaker 1: that about face do you credit with Kellen Moore?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Well, I don't know how much I'd percent. I'd put
- 4:21Speaker 2: it oppositely. It was not an easy position to jump into.
- 4:25Speaker 3: I mean, from the collapse of twenty twenty three, coming
- 4:27Speaker 3: in and Nick Sirianni, who had just been to the
- 4:29Speaker 3: Super Bowl beforehand. You know, there was a quote he
- 4:32Speaker 3: said immediately after that first Super Bowl loss, and it
- 4:35Speaker 3: was promoted Brian Johnson then basically said, we're doing everything
- 4:38Speaker 3: the same. This offense is going to be the same.
- 4:40Speaker 3: It's what got us to the Super Bowl. The way
- 4:42Speaker 3: we run z own reads, they're going to be the same.
- 4:44Speaker 3: The way we do our passing is going to be
- 4:45Speaker 3: the same. Just because we just because they lost Shanstike
- 4:48Speaker 3: into the pults wouldn't mean that their offense was going
- 4:50Speaker 3: to look any different. Well, by the end of the season,
- 4:54Speaker 3: defenses had figured them out. The San Francisco Final forty
- 4:57Speaker 3: nine ers thrashed them, and you know, BOTHA came out
- 5:01Speaker 3: and said, we've got the we've got the playbook. We
- 5:03Speaker 3: put out the blueprint for everyone else, and they they
- 5:05Speaker 3: leaned into it. So and Nick Sirianni was humbled a
- 5:09Speaker 3: bit by that and also still felt very certain that
- 5:13Speaker 3: he knew what he was doing offensively. There were a
- 5:14Speaker 3: lot of things that they did well. So you know,
- 5:17Speaker 3: the offensive coordinator that came in was going to have
- 5:19Speaker 3: to deal with a collaboration setting this. It was not
- 5:23Speaker 3: going to be somebody who needed to be a hothead
- 5:25Speaker 3: and you know step stepped their foot down and have
- 5:27Speaker 3: a lot of ego. That was gonna that kind of
- 5:29Speaker 3: clash was not going to work. And Kellen Moore, you know,
- 5:33Speaker 3: he he doesn't like give in. I'm not saying he
- 5:35Speaker 3: like falls into it, but he knows how to work
- 5:37Speaker 3: with people and collaborate and come up with different ideas
- 5:41Speaker 3: even than he'd done. So that whole off season that
- 5:43Speaker 3: you know, I was talking to Kevin Patula, the passing
- 5:46Speaker 3: game coordinator, about Kellen and Uh, basically they were like
- 5:49Speaker 3: it was like a month or two of a coaching clinic.
- 5:51Speaker 3: They just sat there and said, here's what I've learned.
- 5:53Speaker 3: What do you know? What do you think? And that
- 5:56Speaker 3: was before they even got Saquon Barkley and then they
- 5:57Speaker 3: added him to the equation and they said, well can
- 5:59Speaker 3: we do I remember talking Nick Sirianni about that and
- 6:02Speaker 3: he's like, well, I remember we were checking through all
- 6:04Speaker 3: the things that we we were talking about and you're like,
- 6:06Speaker 3: all right, what can they work here?
- 6:07Speaker 2: What can work here?
- 6:08Speaker 3: Really not there's not much Sakemon Parkley can't do, so
- 6:11Speaker 3: really opening up the playbook at that point it took
- 6:14Speaker 3: a certain kind of person to do that.
- 6:16Speaker 2: And three years ago, uh.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Before they hired Nick Sirianni, Kellen Moore actually interviewed for
- 6:22Speaker 3: the head coaching position, and Jeffrey Louis remembered that the
- 6:26Speaker 3: other day as we were talking to him, he said,
- 6:28Speaker 3: I mean just an incredibly nice guy. Knew that about
- 6:30Speaker 3: him and and lamented, you know, the night before he
- 6:34Speaker 3: left the Saints. She was like, yeah, we're going to
- 6:36Speaker 3: be losing him, but it's a you know, a great
- 6:38Speaker 3: coach at a great time, so everybody felt that way
- 6:40Speaker 3: about him. So, you know, going into the Saint situation
- 6:43Speaker 3: where there's going to be some tough things to happen,
- 6:46Speaker 3: you know, a patient person who's going.
- 6:48Speaker 2: To be able to work through all that.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Those are things that are part of his personality that
- 6:51Speaker 3: really fit well for the situation.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I think Brooks you mentioned Kevin Batulo, by the way,
- 6:55Speaker 1: that's one of the names we've heard that could be
- 6:57Speaker 1: joining Kellen Moore in New Orleans. You've heard Doug nus
- 7:00Speaker 1: Meyer as well. Any scuttle from your side of the
- 7:03Speaker 1: equation assistants who tell themore might be interested in bringing
- 7:07Speaker 1: to New Orleans.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I think he'll only get two.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I think he'll get Doug nust Meyer to come with
- 7:11Speaker 3: him and then also Can Valeria. Those are the two
- 7:14Speaker 3: that he brought with them from the Chargers. And you know,
- 7:17Speaker 3: I've talked to Nick Sirianni about this sometimes and he
- 7:20Speaker 3: said it.
- 7:20Speaker 2: On the record too. Like you know he does.
- 7:22Speaker 3: He is very encouraging for all of his coaches to
- 7:24Speaker 3: go get head coaching jobs, but once they do, you're
- 7:27Speaker 3: not taking any of my guys. He locks down his staff.
- 7:30Speaker 3: That's something that he carried over from working with Frank Wright,
- 7:33Speaker 3: Frank Wrhch had the same deal support go get your job,
- 7:36Speaker 3: but these are my guys, this is this is, that's
- 7:37Speaker 3: what we've had. So I don't think he's going to
- 7:39Speaker 3: get anybody that was a part of the staff before
- 7:43Speaker 3: he got there. I think I think dus Meyer has
- 7:45Speaker 3: been his guy, and I think Sirianna will realize that.
- 7:47Speaker 3: And Kevin Patulo has been Sirianni's guy back to the
- 7:51Speaker 3: Colts to days together.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Even before that.
- 7:54Speaker 3: So Kevin Padulo, I think he's going to be in
- 7:57Speaker 3: line to be the offensive coinator. That brings up a
- 7:59Speaker 3: whold another conversation, But that would mean there's two other
- 8:02Speaker 3: positions left on the offensive staff or Sirianya to Phil,
- 8:05Speaker 3: I think for in terms of what the Saints are
- 8:09Speaker 3: concerned about, Kellen more than you know, working in the
- 8:11Speaker 3: business for a decade now, three different places, three different teams.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Just because he's not taking more than two guys off
- 8:17Speaker 3: the Eagle staff does not mean he doesn't have a
- 8:20Speaker 3: major roll index that he can go call up people.
- 8:22Speaker 3: And again, this is not going to be the same
- 8:26Speaker 3: offensive system he runs, so it's not like they're going
- 8:29Speaker 3: to go and you know, run the ball a bunch
- 8:31Speaker 3: of times, or maybe they do or different ways. So
- 8:34Speaker 3: the system that they'll run, he'll be thinking about that
- 8:36Speaker 3: as he dives into all the contacts that he's built
- 8:38Speaker 3: over the past decade.
- 8:39Speaker 1: He doesn't get to take Saquan or aj Brown or
- 8:42Speaker 1: DeVante Smith and those guys, does I mean that would
- 8:44Speaker 1: probably help.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I don't think that's in the contract, but that.
- 8:47Speaker 1: But that is a big part of it, though. Brooks like,
- 8:49Speaker 1: how much of the success that like, this is the balance, right?
- 8:53Speaker 1: How much of the success that the Eagles had this
- 8:55Speaker 1: year was Kellen Moore? How much of it was Oh
- 8:58Speaker 1: my god, look at all the talent balance that scale
- 9:01Speaker 1: for me?
- 9:03Speaker 3: Well, you know, it's it's tough. It's tough to separate it.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I mean, Seclon Barkley is obviously the greatest running back
- 9:11Speaker 3: Eagles have ever had. So what you wonder about when
- 9:14Speaker 3: you look at you try to piece it apart, is like, okay, well,
- 9:17Speaker 3: what happens whenever this gets taken away? Barkley did not
- 9:20Speaker 3: have a big game against the Chiefs. They decided they
- 9:23Speaker 3: were going to take him out of the game, and
- 9:26Speaker 3: I was expecting it that to happen. What would happen
- 9:28Speaker 3: with Jalen Hurts. Is he going to be a dual threat?
- 9:30Speaker 3: Runners are They're going to try to get him going
- 9:32Speaker 3: in this unree Even whenever Barkley was taken away, I
- 9:34Speaker 3: saw things that Kellen Moore had not done all year,
- 9:37Speaker 3: running full back packages and trying to get Barkley in
- 9:40Speaker 3: the flat. Those were gaining like four or five yard chunks.
- 9:43Speaker 3: But that was things Just get the ball to Barkley
- 9:45Speaker 3: in space. That's Kellen Moore. When I see that, you
- 9:49Speaker 3: look at the game like the Cleveland Browns in Week
- 9:52Speaker 3: six when they were still trying to figure things out offensively.
- 9:54Speaker 3: You know, that was another game that seqwe Barkley is
- 9:57Speaker 3: not doing very well, but.
- 9:59Speaker 2: What did work well?
- 10:00Speaker 3: They were playing a lot of man covers, a lot
- 10:02Speaker 3: of matching on that and whenever you see a major
- 10:06Speaker 3: play Devontae smiss on a mesh route basically a picker
- 10:08Speaker 3: out in the open field. There he goes for a
- 10:10Speaker 3: forty five yard touchdown. The consequence score that wins in
- 10:13Speaker 3: the game. That's Kellen Moore.
- 10:15Speaker 2: So like it's it's a clicheing here.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Coaches say, well, you just you know, players make plays
- 10:21Speaker 3: and you got to fit the scheme to the players.
- 10:23Speaker 3: But that's you know, those examples are where that becomes reality.
- 10:28Speaker 3: And yes, they have an incredibly great roster. And you know,
- 10:32Speaker 3: I'm thinking back to the times we talked about LSU
- 10:35Speaker 3: when Joe Brady was there and all the first round
- 10:37Speaker 3: picks that came out of that team. Well what do
- 10:38Speaker 3: you do after that? So you know it's always going
- 10:42Speaker 3: to be different. I don't expect him to have obviously
- 10:45Speaker 3: super Bowl success in the first season with more, but
- 10:48Speaker 3: you've seen him make multiple different things happen with the
- 10:51Speaker 3: guys he's got, and you know this is a team
- 10:53Speaker 3: that's going to have assets, maybe not this year, but
- 10:56Speaker 3: in the future years.
- 10:57Speaker 2: And you know it's not going to be a one
- 10:58Speaker 2: and I don't think it will be a one.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Unpressing situation with Kilim or not with this kind of expectation,
- 11:04Speaker 3: but I think you've seen a lot of creativity from him.
- 11:07Speaker 1: He doesn't like that he's Brooks Kabbina covering the Eagles
- 11:11Speaker 1: now for the Athletic you'll get him on X at
- 11:13Speaker 1: the Kabina of course, formerly of the Advocate. We got
- 11:16Speaker 1: known during his time in Baton Rouge. Following there on Twitter,
- 11:21Speaker 1: hey man, great to chat. Sorry I missed you in
- 11:24Speaker 1: in Nola last week man, but glad you're doing well
- 11:26Speaker 1: and we appreciate a couple of minutes today.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Nice send goes anytime
