- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Haunted Ozark Theater, H O T, your Hot Horror Podcast, and I'm welcoming you all back to our coverage of the entire Friday the 13th franchise.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Last week was part one.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: This week we're going to wrap it up with part two.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And for this little intro, I don't have Cody with me, uh, but we did just leave Spirit Halloween for the first time this year and bought some goodies.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Uh, and I just wanted to do our normal business that we take care of at the beginning of each episode.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: So let's go with this day in horror history.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: It's August 8th today.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And it's the birthday of a person who appropriately enough acted in the very first Friday the 13th movie.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: He played the character of Bill, and if y'all don't remember, Bill was the one who they found impaled by arrows on the archery course.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: But here's the interesting thing: Bill was played by an actor named Harry Crosby, and he's none other than the son of Bing Crosby.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So if you thought there was nothing in common with Bing Crosby and Friday the 13th, you'd be wrong.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And I would have been wrong yesterday, uh having not known that until I looked this up.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: So happy birthday to Harry Crosby.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And uh I'll do a quick little rewatch segment for y'all.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: I have been continuing with my creep show journey.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Um almost done with season three, but while I was uh shuffling through on Shutter, I looked at the things that were just recently added, and one of them is Peter Jackson's The Frighteners.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And we've talked about this movie in the past a little bit, I believe.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: And uh it's Michael J.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Fox and Peter Jackson directing, and it's a fantastic movie.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Uh it's a comedy, it's like a supernatural comedy.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: It's not really a horror movie, although it does have four elements.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: I liken it to a kind of Beetlejuice as far as tone and feel goes.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Uh what a great movie, though.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: It's so fun.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: It's a really, really fun movie.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And I just did a little bit of homework into it.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, I didn't realize that Robert Zemeckis was the producer on this movie.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: I didn't remember that the soundtrack was done by Danny Elfman.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: So that kind of adds to the Beetlejuice feel of The Frighteners.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing that I learned that I was really surprised by.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Um, Universal Studios had great faith in this movie.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: I think they threw something like$25 million at this movie and really thought it was going to be a massive, massive box office hit.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And it just totally bombed.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And I don't know why.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's too niche.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: It's a very unique movie.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Even still today, it's a very uh movie that is unlike many other movies out there.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Um, so maybe just the world wasn't quite ready for it yet.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: But I will say that upon re-watching it, every actor on screen is totally committed to the role.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, they sell out for their parts, they are acting their tails off.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: And I think that that just says a great deal about the kind of director that Peter Jackson is, even back then.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: This is this is like five years prior to Lord of the Rings.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: So nobody really knew who he was back then, but he had done some uh great movies prior.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: He had done Heavenly Creatures and he'd done Braindead, also known as Dead Alive.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And so he had uh some cinematic pedigrees, particularly in the horror genre.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, but this movie is great.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: If y'all haven't seen it, check it out.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Frightened The Frighteners is what it's called.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: All right, so without further ado, I'm gonna switch back to our part two of the episode that we recorded last week, which will close out our coverage of the Friday 13th franchise.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: I hope y'all enjoy.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: We got part seven, the new blood 1988.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: New blood.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: New blood 1988.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Um, so I I said a minute ago, seven, eight, and nine in my mind kind of belong in a trilogy of how can we reinvent Jason?
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: So they tried to do something different, which with each one of these movies, seven, eight, and nine.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Make it simple because Jason being at Cape Crystal Lake, you can only it kind of gets boring after a while.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: You gotta spice it up.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And I but I will say that seven, eight, and nine, their attempts to do something different and their attempts to get away from Crystal Lake.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Uh I will say I think they failed pretty bad.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: It depends who you ask, Paul.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Opinions vary.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: I'm yeah, and I like we, you know, we don't like to talk down on anybody.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: So you're telling me you don't like telekinesis?
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: I'm not a big fan of seven, eight, and nine.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: That's all I'm gonna say.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Well, tell me what you do like about a new blood because I'll tell you what's awesome about new blood.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Um, so seven.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Uh Sean Cunningham's back, and you mentioned uh what did you say earlier about Carrie knock knocking them off a you know at the end of Carrie?
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah that's got the jobs carry he got the idea.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, so so Sean asked Cunningham is a huge fan.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: He's a huge Carrie fan.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: So when he comes back to be a producer for part seven, that's his this is his contribution.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Let's do Carrie versus Jason.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And he meant it literally.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: He wanted to get the rights to use the character Carrie and have Carrie and Jason find each other.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: And I think vicious?
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: I think Stephen King said, Nah, I'm not signing on to that.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: I don't think yeah, I could see that.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: So they said, well, let's if we can't use Carrie, let's just ride our own girl, our own Carrie, who has the same power set essentially as Carrie.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: So yeah, Sean S.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Cunningham fully intended to license Carrie from Stephen King and do a Carrie versus Jason movie.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And yeah, that was Dan Long.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Dude, what did you think about the very opening of this movie, though?
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Refresh my memory.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: It's the montage of all of them.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: There's a curse from that is a great recap, great way to set things up and and uh remind everybody of where we've been, but also kind of say, like, now you know they are waiting.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: And um, so her story, you know, she accidentally sent her dad to the bottom of the same lake where Jason is.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: Mom and dad are fighting, and she gets mad at dad.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: And yeah.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: And I will say in Friday the 13th's defense, the continuity, for the most part, they stick together.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: A lot of these horror movies are everywhere.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Friday the 13th usually tries to one after another, go, okay, I can go back to that.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they build upon what came before very well, I would say.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: You know, at least for at least as far as horror movies go.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And this is the first time we get Kane Otter.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, Jason.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: I want you to tell me something you love about this movie.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Uh I do love that when she finally defeats him at the end, he's right back to the bottom of the lake.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Like right back where he started.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: He's he's back, he's down there at the end of six.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: She gets dad to come up, which is a cool idea.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: It is, it is.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Um, back down to the murky lakes.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Another problem I have.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Well, one of the cool things I love about this is when she uses her powers to unmask him.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: You know, drips off his face.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: She likes splits the mask open right off of his face, and you see.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: And he's he's real crazy looking.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Um, when you see him, he's not pretty.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: But also, this is another one of the problems I have with this movie.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: This is the only movie where they have his eyeball, his open eye, on the wrong side of his face.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: It and you can't live with that?
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: No.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: I can get past that.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: No, how do you mess that up?
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Sean Cunningham, I guess.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: In every single movie, he's got one open eye, and he's got one that's kind of like closed and drooping down.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: All of them.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Every single movie.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Kind of his look and like the sack head only has one eye hole.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: For that reason.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Because he only has the one good eye on the one side.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: I never really thought about that, Paul.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: That's hilarious.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: And so when she unmasks him with her psychic powers, which is a very cool scene, his open eyes, good eyes on the wrong side of his face.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: They totally screwed that up.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: You were talking about the good continuity.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: And look, thanks, Paul.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Dang it.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: So this is that's one of my problems.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: That sounds like that's your biggest problem.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Maybe, maybe.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: I'm like, come on, you guys.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: So you don't like this one at all?
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm not gonna say I don't like it at all, but I I will say that seven and eight and nine are are definitely my bottom three.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Like, easily my bottom three are seven, eight, and nine.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: And this goes back, there's a character, two characters.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: The little girl is in Leatherface section of Saints I Masker, and the people they're waiting for on the party to show up who gets killed with his girlfriend in the car.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: He's the uh the main male guy in Leatherface.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Who's he obviously he gets killed by the family, but he's in both those, though.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: So I love New Blood, though.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: I I I don't dislike it.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: It's very 1988.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Um men wearing the short shorts.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: But as far as the Jason movies go, it's it's I've just got to disagree with that.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: It's bottom round for me.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay, fair enough.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: So then we come up to the next travesty.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: 1989, when we got we got Jason Takes Manhattan.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: And for a movie that's Jason Takes Manhattan, he doesn't spend a lot of time in Manhattan.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Not at all, not at all.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: And there's a reason for that.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Well, first of all, let's say first movie to have a repeat Jason actor.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: So Kane Hotter comes back for his second turn as Jason, first time they got the same actor back for consecutive Jasons.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Um this is when you know it basically becomes his role.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: And I I think, like we said, like uh there was the Richard Brooker kind of was the definitive Jason, and then like uh I know your favorite is Derek Mears.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: But I think that if anyone can lay claim to Jason being it's Kane Hodder, yeah, for sure.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Not that I don't like Kane's version, it's just like I don't know, Derek's my favorite, yeah.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: But um because Seven did Seven did really bad at the box office, and Paramount was like we gotta we gotta do something different.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Um, so they threw a bunch of money at this movie.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Can't tell.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: This movie had a five million dollar budget, which at the time was like five times higher than any previous Friday 13th movie.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: So they really want this one to but in spite of that, they could only book two night shoots in New York City.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: So the reason why they don't spend hardly any time because they couldn't afford it, or I don't know if they couldn't afford it or they just chose to spend that money because they filmed in Vancouver.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Vancouver, yeah.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: So the two the the best scenes in all of Jason Take's Manhattan are the scenes where you can tell they're actually in Manhattan.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: It's got another great kill.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: But they only did if they only were able to shoot two nights in in Manhattan.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: That's wonder if they weren't really in Manhattan, because where he knocks that guy's head off with the uppercut.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Fatality.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: I don't know that that could have been anywhere.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: But the scenes where he's walking through to the straight and he kicks the stereo and pulls up this mask.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Uh and I saw a great interview with Kane Hodder where he said um They wanted to kick the dog.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: No, they they bit they, as you mentioned before, with the I think you were, I think we were talking about part five.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Um, the kid didn't know that he was signing up for a Friday the 13th movie.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Um, this one, they didn't make any attempts to hide the fact that they were filming the new Friday 13th movie, and so all the the crowd and stuff, the Times Square crowd, I'm sure it was packed, they knew what they were there for.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: And there's an interview with Kane where he says they're just about to yell action, and he's in the full makeup and stuff, and the crowd is going, Jason, Jason, or they're going, Kane, Kane, like they're all calling for him.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: And he said, in character, he just very slowly turned his masked head towards the crowd, and he said the crowd went abruptly.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: And he was like, for that moment, he's like, I felt like the Beatles.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: He's like, that was the most like energy and fame I've ever felt.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Was I turned to the crowd like in character?
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Rock star.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: And yeah, he was like, that's what he said.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: He was like, I was for that moment, I was a total rock star.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: That's really cool.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Like, and he deserved it.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: I've heard Kane Otter is yeah, super, super good guy.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: We'll have to meet him one day.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: We will.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: So the scene I was talking about, I heard from an interview from him, uh, they wanted him that wasn't necessarily a dog.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Uh and he was like, Not even Jason kicks dogs.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: He's like, I won't kick a dog.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: And they're like, Well, so they put the boom box.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's no, I didn't hear that story.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: That's very cool.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: That's very cool.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Jason's very PETA-friendly in those.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Um here's one thing that I so most of this movie takes place on the boat.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: 90% on the way to New York, right?
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: So that's the the name Jason Takes Manhattan is is it should be called Jason Takes a Cruise, is what it should be called.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Um these day movies.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: He only takes Manhattan in the last like 10 minutes of the movie.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Um but here's here's a big problem that I had with the movie.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: But I will say that we're gonna come back to this in a little bit and maybe give a satisfactory answer.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: You're trying to tell me that Crystal Lake somehow is like like a lock or a sound that's connected to a river that's connected to the ocean.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: You can get on a boat in Crystal Lake and take it to Manhattan.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: You can get out on the open Atlantic Ocean from Crystal Lake.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: 12-year-old me never thought of this.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Neither did I when I was a kid.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, I loved this movie when I was a kid, I really did.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Because it's so it's so urban and and you know, a little more like hip-hop than the other movies and stuff.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, Jason's a like we were saying, uh, he's a rock star.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: It's a these are rock and roll movies, but this one's this one's a lot more urban and hip-hop, which I liked at the time.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: I was definitely back now.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: That's where I was at as a kid at that time.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was listening to to MC Hammer and Tom.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Remember that guitar in it that he killed such dude with?
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yes.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, so I don't know how they do that, Paul.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: It's movie magic.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Well, we're gonna talk about it here in a little bit because I I have I have maybe an answer.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: No, I have maybe an explanation, okay?
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Uh okay, so this movie comes out, and like I said before, seven bombed at the box office.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: This one did worse, didn't it?
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: And so they're like, let's throw a bunch of money at it, make sure it's good.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: And it did even worse.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: This movie bombed at the box.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: And I mean bombed.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: They didn't even make their five million back, I don't think.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: And at this point, Paramount says, We have no more faith in Jason, and they sell to New Line.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna stop you real quick.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Do they bomb because of that uh how Jason tanks Manhattan all that?
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Or is it just because man, that's the eighth entry in Friday the 13th.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: I think that's part of it.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: And it's stammel, you know what I mean?
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: I think that's definitely part of it.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: I think that eight, you know, it was probably too too too too many for and there's black ass, dude.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: They bring them one after summer to bring one out.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I think it was probably some oversaturation, and not so much the movie.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm getting at.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: I agree, I agree.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't think seven and eight, even though I'm kind of clowning on them, I don't think they're so bad that they deserve to bomb at the box office.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: I went and I paid my money to go see them, and I still love them, even though I even though I'm saying seven, eight, and nine are are the worst of the low tier for you.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: I still like them and still re-watch them fairly regularly.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: They're still fun.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: They're super fun, yes, sir.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Super fun.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: But Paramount lost all confidence in this franchise and sold to Newline.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: They said And what did Newline make with it?
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Newline is the house that Freddie built.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: And uh Sean Cunningham and uh they brought back Manfredini for the soundtrack now um nine is Jason Goes to Hell.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: 1993, and this one went straight to DVD.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Did you know that?
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Did I have a theatrical release?
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: I don't remember it not coming out in the theater, but they did uh Cunningham brought Manfredini back, and as I watched Um Jason Goes to Hell just last week, I guess.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: The soundtrack is good.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: It's not my favorite.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: See, that's where me and you yes, see this this one's not my favorite.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: This is a see, I think when I think you can tell that Manfredini is bad.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: It's just not my favorite out of five.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: So I loved the soundtrack on this one.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: That's this is that's my that's my gold star for for Jason Goes to Hell, is is the is the soundtrack.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: I'm I love the look of this, Jason.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: We just you you only get the real Jason for what a total of eight minutes in this movie?
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that's my biggest gripe here, yeah, is that this is a Jason movie without Jason.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: We do number five again, in a sense.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Well, but it even in number five, you still have the hockey mask, but in this one, it's it's getting obsessed.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: He's he's hopping from body to body in this one.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Um, so you have a guy or even a girl in some sense instances doing the killing, no mask.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: They're not Jason.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: It's just that we know and love.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: You do see him, but that's not enough.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: You see him in the mirror, but but you see when the action is happening, it's a guy or a girl.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, whoever's not Jason, no mask.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: And they're doing Jason's will, I guess, because they're possessed.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: I like the like only a Vohees can kill a Vohees and it's his and knees, and that is neat.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: I do, and that was Cunningham's suggestion.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Cunningham is like, let's for this one, let's do a twist in that um, you know, if if we're gonna end him and send him to hell for real, um it's gotta be one of his family members, his descendants, yeah, that's that does it.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: So yeah, we're introduced to his niece and then his niece's daughter, right?
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Um, and that that was neat.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: I liked I did like that.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: I did like that.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: I didn't like the body hopping thing either.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: I didn't like that kind of like Jason takes Manhattan, Jason goes to hell.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: He literally goes to hell in the very last scene.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: And who who takes the mask?
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Well, he gets pulled down by, I guess, demons.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: It's the demons, and then what's left on the surface of the dirt is the mask itself, and then Freddie's hand comes up and pulls the mask down.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: That's Kane Hotter's hand, yes, it is.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: Um, but this is this is new line.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: That was the best part of that movie.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: I got so hyped as a kid.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: We're getting it 30 versus and how long I we had to wait 13 years, yeah.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: 12 or 13 years.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so but this was new lines like okay, we got Jason now, so let's let's make this happen.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: So they planted that seed and it it took quite a while for that seed to grow.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: But I wonder why.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: I've never really done much back searching into I think it's the same reason, like we were talking about earlier, who gets the credit and you know who's gonna make the money off of this, and it just took them a really long time to sort all that out.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: So why they were thinking about all that, they go, let's put Jason up in space.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, real quick though, I want to finish up Jason Goes to Hell.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I I remember now that you say that it didn't come out in the theater, that makes sense because I remember as a kid, I don't have any memories of going to see this in the theater, but I do remember knowing the title is Jason Goes to Hell and thinking that the movie was actually gonna take place in hell.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, that would have been as a kid.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: That's what I thought.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: I when I finally watched this movie, I'm thinking to myself, this movie is gonna take place in hell, and it doesn't.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: And he only gets you know taken down to hell in the very last scene, and and you don't you still don't even see hell, you just see him getting dragged down.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: So that was always kind of a letdown for me.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: I've really but that's because my own expectations of I didn't take that only because I can remember very, very vividly uh the channel sci-fi when it was actually spelt the right way, yeah, and it showed horror stuff, they would have little minute segues, but that had a little making of and backstory of hey, Jason goes to hell and all this.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: And I remember just always sitting and watching sci-fi just so I might get a glimpse of that.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: So you saw kind of the behind-the-scenes stuff.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: So I I just remember hearing the title, and that was it, and and just kind of making up my own story, I guess, in my head about what it's gonna be.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Can you remember how disappointed you were that Jason's not really in this movie?
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: So why does why do you think the coroner eats his heart?
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Possessed.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: There's just some kind of crazy supernatural thing that compels him to.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: And I've heard theories that um the their dead, Jason is right.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: I I know that story, yeah.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: So then all through the movies, he they body hop, whenever he body hops, it's they hold pin down the victim, and there's like this black tongue coming out of whoever is possessed, and the black tongue thing is gonna go into the other guy, and now that guy's gonna be possessed.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: But you find out later on, I always thought it was a tongue until later on you find out that it's actually its own little creature.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, at the very end.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: It's Jason's heart.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Jason's heart becomes this weird little demonstration.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: That was kind of not so great, maybe.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Don't call me.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: That was another one of the things where I was like, as a kid, I didn't care.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I can't but now it's kind of like I know they got a really young guy to direct it.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: I think it was like his first movie as a director or something.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: So it doesn't surprise me for sure.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: The other thing I want to talk about that that I meant to mention sooner was um seven, eight, and nine, apart from you know, kind of them trying to do something different with each one.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: These movies got no love from the censors.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: The censors were hard after.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they they really made they forced a lot of major cuts to these scenes, and as a result, I think seven, eight, and nine have the weakest kills.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: As far as just on-screen gore and blood and visceral, yeah, they're not real pleasing kills.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: That's what really sticks out, does it?
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: I don't like it.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: So they couldn't get their eyes dotted and their T's crossed to make Freddy versus Jason yet.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: So, but they wanted to keep making Jason movies, obviously.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: So they come up with this idea of Jason in space.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: 2001.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: 2001.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: So we went from 1993, we get a little gap, and Jason returns, then Jason X.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: But it takes place like 500 years in the future.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: And the reason why they did that is to not mess up what they had established at the end of Jason Goes to Heaven.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: So that yeah, which no one would have cared, but nobody would have cared.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: But I actually do appreciate that they're like the continuity.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're like, well, he's he's in hell with Freddie.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: We want him to stay there, we want him and Freddie to have this showdown eventually.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: And eventually we'll we'll show you how he got out of hell, yeah.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so how do we make a movie and not interfere with that?
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: Interfere with the foundation that we're gonna do.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: 5,000 years after 500 years in the future.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I actually thought that was kind of cool.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: Um, so what do you give me give me your thoughts on Jason?
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: This is my least favorite.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Out of all of them, if I had to pick one, I just I don't like any of my villains going to space.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: They make fun, they kind of bring that up in the beginning of the curse of Michael Myers.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: If you're listening to the radio, what's next?
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Jason Gonas or Michael Gonaswith?
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: But uh I love the look of Jason in the beginning before Uber Jason.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: I don't care for Uber Jason.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: You don't like nano machine?
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: I do not under Jason.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: The one good I love the kill with the um where he freezes the girl said that was an awesome kill.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: Other than that, this movie just does nothing for me.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Really, so yeah, I love this movie.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: I loved it when it came out, and I rewatched it last week, and I'm like, dude, this movie rocks.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: What do you love about it?
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Um, well, I think part of it is you know, we've talked about how hardcore the early 2000s went when it comes to horror.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Like there was nothing out of bounds in early 2000s horror.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: And so for me, like we just said, seven, eight, and nine had kind of weak kills.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Um, they come back with part 10, and the censors are like, do your thing.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, why did they like in the early 90s and all this?
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: They're so gung-ho about and we're not showing nothing.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: And then, like you said, beginning of 2000s, it's like, hey, it's a free-for-all, you've got to do whatever you want to do.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: So there's the kills in part 10 are just they're back to being the old school kills where they right.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: There's it's just your only limit is your imagination, and they're gonna show you everything.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: And I just loved it.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: I loved how you know Do you like Uber Jason?
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: Uh I have I have issues with Uber Jason.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: I I don't feel like he needed to get any more uh stronger than he already was.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's invincible, invincible, but then he they still find a way to kill him.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: That ultimately I have a problem with about Jason X is that yeah, they they they make him into basically a uh a cyborg, yeah, who should be totally unstoppable if you as if he wasn't already unstoppable.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: But then they find a way to stop.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of goofy.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, I mean I it's the last run that Kane Hotter has it to be.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: I'm sure that that's a shame.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: But no offense to the movie and the people who love it.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: I just I would love to have seen him with a better send-off for Jason.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like him not dying and Jason being victim.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: I just think Kane deserved that.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: I hear you, I hear you.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: But I no, I just love this movie.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: I think it's it's too it's early 2000s, cheese.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: It's very early 2000s.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Everything that was great about that era of horror movies, and I don't think there's a lot of practical effect kills in that.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: It's there's a lot of CGI.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: That's probably what throws me off thinking.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: There is a lot of CGI in this movie.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: But I think when when the blood sprays, I think it's blood, I think it's on-screen blood, but there's a lot of CGI in this movie for sure.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: And the CGI hadn't gotten good yet, right?
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: It's not bad, like it was forgivable bad.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: Like when we saw it, we weren't we weren't saying, Oh, this is bad.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Bad you didn't know about it.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: Because at the time, yeah, we didn't know any better.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: When you look back at it now, you're like, this is bad spray.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's why it throws the non fire.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: But once again, where does he end up?
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: Bottom of the lake.
- 30:47unknown: Yeah.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: He comes, he basically gets turned into a shooting star.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: He gets turned into like a shooting star, essentially, and re-enters the Earth's atmosphere, and where does he crash?
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Bottom of crystal lake.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: He's destined for that one.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: That's just where he belongs.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: That's another thing I loved about it, because it's just so goofy.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: Like that's where he would end up.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: Where else would he end up, though?
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: Where else would he have toast then?
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: So um he is now uh dead, dead.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: He's dead.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: In the 500 years in the future, he's toast.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: And his and what's left of his mask is at the bottom of the lake.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: And so you we can effectively put an end to the Jason story with Jason.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Um, so now the next movie, which is part 11, but it's only it's not there's no 11 in the title, it's just called Freddie versus Jason.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Freddie versus Jason.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Comes out in 2003, and this picks up right where Jason Goes to Hell left off.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: And also, um Does it though?
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Well, essentially, I mean Freddie's in hell after uh Final Nightmare and Jason's in hell after Jason Goes to Hell.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, I thought you were mean like it takes place like immediately.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: I was like, No, not immediately, but it's a direct sequel.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: It's a direct sequel.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: Um this was a blast.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Went and watched this in theater.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: The audience, it was packed, and this man, people were dying for this movie.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: Horror fans were dying, even non-horde fans, yeah, yeah.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, first of all, I think the fans were clamoring for this even before the ending of Jason Goes the Hell.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this was one of those things that, like, you know, you talked about Fangoria and even magazines like Star Log and stuff, like people were writing in to these magazines and saying, like, give us this movie, you know.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: And then when Newline bought the rights to Friday 13th, and they teased it at the end of their first New Line Jason movie, you know, and then it did take them some time to get all their ducks in a row to make this movie actually happen.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: But I think all that did was serve as uh the proper amount of time for like the hype to build.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: And it did, man.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: It built.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Do you remember how excited you were?
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Man, and like you said, not just me and my friends who are horror fans, everybody, everybody went and saw this movie.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: And who's gonna win?
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Who's coming out on top?
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: And I was like, it's gonna be Jason, you know.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: But I'm a Jason dude, but and uh someone who doesn't get to me, this is one of the best, if not the best, Freddie.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: His makeup, the look, I think Freddie is unbelievable.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: And people never go, oh, this is my favorite Freddy in Jason Hose Freddy, but I thought it was he was awesome.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't disagree with what you're saying.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: He he's great in this movie, and you can tell they gave Robert English, like just they let him off the chain and said, do your thing.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: And he did.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: And he did.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: My favorite Freddy look is New Nightmare.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: The way he the way he's his design, you know, his character design and look in New Nightmare is my favorite.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: But this is a close second.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: Like he's he he looks really cool in this movie, and and Robert Englund's performance in this movie is is yeah, he's also totally awesome.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: You could tell that I think they've had a great time making this.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, they must have had a blast.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Now, out of all, as much as I love Friday 13, this is not my favorite one, but going back anytime, I can watch this one always have fun.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Like there's some that it's hard to get through talking about, you know, Jason and Specs and all that.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: But I showed this one to my teenage daughter, and she was laughing.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, this and that, and loved it.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Like, wow, that was really fun.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: And that's what it is.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: That is such a fun movie.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is what this is why you go to the movies, is for a movie like this.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: And it's it's it's a blast.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: Like you said, there's I got nothing bad to say about this movie.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: I love Freddie versus Jason.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: Um that was a huge success.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Money-wise.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know about critics, I'm sure they ate it.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Critics, I'm sure, hated it.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I mean, this was a big blockbuster film, big time.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Came out in the summer, made big dollars.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: You know, this is this was checked all those boxes for sure.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: Um, you mentioned something a minute ago, which I want to dig into a little bit.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: Who's gonna win?
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, is Freddie gonna win?
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: Is Jason gonna win?
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Or they put like not in Vegas or something.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't be surprised.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: But uh it wasn't ultimately written by Mark Ver Haydn, but Mark Ver Hayden was brought in as an early screenwriter for Freddy versus Jason.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: He did some early drafts of the screenplay.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: Now he ultimately didn't get the job to you know be the screenwriter for this movie, but he had some input early on.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: And his one of his big ideas that didn't happen, which I kind of wish would have happened, let's film two different endings to this movie.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: One where Jason wins, one where Freddie wins.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: And you, as the moviegoer, the audience, pick which one you want to go see.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, that would have been fantastic.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: How cool would that be?
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: If you're a Jason guy and you want to see Jason win, then you go see that one.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Do that, or if you were a Freddie guy and you want to see win-win, dude.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Fantastic idea.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: That is no one's ever done that.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: No, not that I know of.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: So, Mark Verhayden, hats off to you, buddy, for the idea.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: Yes, that's giving me goosebumps.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: That would have been amazing.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: I'm so sorry that they didn't take your suggestion.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: Now, did they feel I did they film a different ending?
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: I don't think so.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: He he had this idea so early on in the screenwriting process.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: That's something that's nothing ever came of it.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: But he I saw an interview where he said, like, that was that was my big contribution to the writer's room at the time.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Let's film two different endings and give that way everybody gets exactly what they want.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: They want.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: Because as I mean, it's pretty huge.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, Jason and Freddie, I mean I will say But no, you everyone really wanted the end of that because Freddie, you know, Jason's coming out of the lake holding Freddie's head, and then Freddie winks at you.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: You're like, you can't kill Freddie or Jason.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: I mean So yeah, so I would say if you have to give a a winner, if you have to pick a winner, I'd say Jason won the fight.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: Oh my boy.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: And but I would also say that I think I don't think it was even really close.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: There's a scene, there's a there's a sequence.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: What do you mean, not close?
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Like the fight.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: There's a sequence where Freddie He gets his blows in.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: He gets his blows in.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: But that's it's only one sequence.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: The rest of the time Jason's giving it to him.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: Well, dude, it's in in but Freddie's in the real world, you know, at that end.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he doesn't have his dream power.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: Jason's six foot eight, Freddie's five foot six.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: Like I was kind of like, dang, he's kind of getting his butt whooped, you know.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: I loved it.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: I loved it too.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: But I was like, kind of, I don't know.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: I guess as a kid, I expected them to kind of make more of an even match.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: I guess.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: I just remember like the blood is awesome, like the machete, and then he rims off his arm through his chest.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: Yes, it was unbelievable.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was awesome.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: Maybe I can I need to watch that with the whole family.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: Oh man, you didn't so you didn't watch it just recently?
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: Not that one, no, dude.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: I watched the only one I didn't watch this over the past two weeks is is the remake because well, because you had just loaned me the Blu-ray for the remake just a little while ago.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: So the remake's still pretty fresh in my mind.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: But I watched one through eleven over the last two weeks, I watched one through eleven.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: Awesome, man.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: Um one last thing about Freddy versus Jason, or two, actually, two last things.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: What do you got?
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: Um three things, actually.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: My one of my favorite visuals, you know.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: I talk about Jason being chained to the bottom of the lake as my favorite visual.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: There's another great Jason visual in this movie, and that's burning Jason coming out of the cornfield.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: Cornfield, yes, dude.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: That huge silhouette that's just chopping down the party goers.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: That is such an awesome visual.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: It really is.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: That is a killer, killer look and and piece of celluloid.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: Oh man, that's great, great, great.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: Um, we get a little Jason backstory in this movie.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: You know, there's those scenes where Freddie goes into his and Jason's a kid.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: I want to talk about that a little bit.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: What do you want to talk about?
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Well, first of all, the story always has been that Jason drowned because the counselors were making that were having sex and not watching the kids like they should have been.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Which the way they show it, that's one way you can interpret it.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: This is kind of like the whole Star Wars from a certain point of view thing.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Like Jason drowns because the counselors aren't paying attention to him.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: But in this movie, the other kids actually push it in.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: Jason in the water.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: Talking, yeah.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: So you might not necessarily blame the counselors, you might blame the other kids who now, and another thing is I wonder if Peacock show go off of that.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: When maybe when they're when they're making fun of Jason, and they're making fun of him for the way he looks.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: The way he looks at the end of part one when he comes out of the water is not that's not a look because he's spent so much time in the bottom of the lake.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: He was born that way.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: He was kind of a deformed, yeah.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: But did you notice what they did to him when they're chasing him around the camp?
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: What they put a sack over his head, yes, I did catch that.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: So that immediately made me think that kind of an origin of all that.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: In part two fault.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: In part two, when he wants to cover up his face and he doesn't yet have the hockey mask, he he chooses the sack.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: And why does he choose the sack?
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Because that's what the kids put on him, made fun of him, put on him when he was a little kid.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: So that was the little connection that I made.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I never picked that up.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: Very good.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Now the last thing is, and this might answer the earlier question, okay?
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: Um, they most of this movie takes place in Springwood, Ohio.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: On Elm Street, even in Nancy's old house.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: It's the same house.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: Now at the end, they tranquilize Jason.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: They got him in the van.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: And they tranquilize Lori as well.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: Or they're gonna, yeah, they tranquilize her eventually.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: But they drive from Ohio to New York in this van, right?
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Which I remember as a I was 25 or something like that when this movie came out.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: I remember thinking y'all do not have enough tranquilizers to keep Jason asleep to keep Jason asleep to drive from Ohio to New York.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: Like I just didn't buy it.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: And even even re-watching it this past week, I'm like, I I can't I can't overlook it.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: You just weren't.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Uh I just you you're gonna keep this dude drubbed for the entire drive.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: This guy is super freaking natural.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, even like horse tranquilizers are not gonna keep this guy down for very long, right?
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: So just for fun, I'm like, I'm gonna look up how long it would take to drive from Ohio to Crystal Lake.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: Go ahead, take a guess.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: Four and a half hours.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: So Ohio just to like the tip of New York is like an eight-hour drive.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Eight-hour drive?
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: Now, Crystal Lake is supposedly upstate.
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: Um, so that makes it an even longer drive.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: So if we're going 15 hours, if we're going upstate New York, we're talking like 10 to 12 hours, I think, from from Springwood, Ohio.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, so this is a really long drive.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: I looked up uh Paul, I wanted to look up like where they always say upstate New York, right?
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to figure out okay, exactly where are we?
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: Exactly where are we like in real life or in the movies?
- 43:51SPEAKER_01: In real life.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: Well, both.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: Either or.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: There's a real Crystal Lake in New York.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: There's a real Crystal Lake in New York.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: In in real world, it's like paddle, what's the name of the camp?
- 44:03unknown: I don't know.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a Boy Scout camp.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Um, but anyway, there's a real Crystal Lake in New York, and it really is upstate.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: It's right by the Erie Canal.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: So to answer your question or answer my question, wow.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Can you take a boat from Crystal Lake to Manhattan?
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, you can.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: The continuity.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: It's genius.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: Yes, you can.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: I thought it was a plot hole.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: That came back.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: If you go to the real Crystal Lake in New York, it's right by the Erie Canal, and you can take a boat out to the Atlantic Ocean and end up in Manhattan if you really wanted to.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: That's so cool.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: Man, if the only gripe you have about this movie is that they won't have enough tranquilizer to keep Mr.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: Orbies out of it, then I'm cool with that.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that was my gripe.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: But it led to me doing some research, which actually made Jason Takes Manhattan make more sense.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: A little bit better, doesn't it?
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: That's so cool.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna wrap this thing up with 2009.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: The reboot.
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: Which is this is your baby.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:10SPEAKER_00: And this is coming on the heels of us just two weeks ago meeting Derek Mears.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: This came out 2009, February 13th.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: And that was I mean, the hype for me.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: I was talking about this to everybody.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: The trailers that came out that summer for it, I was man, it's still great.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: It holds up.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: Derek Mears is the best Jason of all time.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, they got Marcus Nispell to direct it.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: He did the 2003 Texas Job Master.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Dude, Jason is an up east.
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: He's smart.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: He's that's the Jason you would never want to run into.
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: If there was one Jason go you won't want to run into, it's him.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: He's strong, he's athletic, he's fast.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: And they borrow a lot from two and three.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: Well, it's two, three, and four that they really take out of.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: Because if you're down there and because I've watched this movie so many times, you see like the mom sweater, you see the wheelchair from part two down in there.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: So I I really enjoyed the remake.
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna let you just basically gush about it because I did not go see this in the theater.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: I don't know why.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: Because I am not a remake guy.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: I've told you before, like if you went and watched O3 Massacre?
- 46:26SPEAKER_00: Not in the theater.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: Then we're not friends.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: I didn't know this.
- 46:30SPEAKER_00: Both of these were blockbuster movies for me.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: Both of these were blockbuster movies for me.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: But I will say that is that the old Paul talking because I gotta only assume now, if because another Friday the 13th is gonna come out and it's gonna be a huge market thing.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: You're telling me you're gonna go, well, I'm not going to that.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: I'll go see it now, yeah, for sure.
- 46:48SPEAKER_00: But there was definitely like you just cynical about them?
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: I guess.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: I guess it's like I still feel like if the original's good, don't remake it.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: I that's I still feel that way.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: So I feel like so you didn't even go see Halloween 2007, Robb Zombies?
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 47:04SPEAKER_00: No, the dude.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: No, I did not.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: Not in the theater.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: These were all blockbuster movies for me, every single one of them.
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: But I will say that when I went and it's when I finally rented Friday 13th, 09, I was like, okay, I missed out.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: I missed out by not going to see this.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: Well, I remember letting you borrow my copy, and you said them of course whatever no one's ever said anything about this, Jason.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: That's bad.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: I don't think you could if you wanted to.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: It's all the characters and all this, but man, that's what the people you want to die, these characters die.
- 47:36SPEAKER_01: The people you want to live, well, a couple of them live.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: But I mean, this is what more would you want from a Friday the 13th movie?
- 47:41SPEAKER_01: No.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: This is everything.
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: It's really good.
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: It really, really is.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: And if anyone was in the same boat that I was in, which is they didn't go see it just because it was a remake, uh, do yourself a favor and watch it because it's this is one of the instances where the remake is actually really, really good.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna say it's better than the original, but it's it's um it's totally worth watching.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: Crazy thing about this movie.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: So the opening weekend, it was Shattering Records.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was huge, huge.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then it had like on the other side, the biggest downfall of movie I've ever had, like the second or third version of dropped off.
- 48:19SPEAKER_00: I could see that.
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: And uh they were gonna get everybody back to do it again, and it was really cool because I read the first half of the script, it's on Reddit, and it was gonna take place in the snow.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: And some of the kills and Jason set people up in the snow.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: That would have been awesome.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: Dude, with Derek, when Derek Mears wanted to come back, they were trying to get him.
- 48:38SPEAKER_01: That's my only biggest thing about this is we didn't get another Derek Mears, Jason.
- 48:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I would have punched a baby in the face to have that movie.
- 48:45SPEAKER_00: Maybe he's gonna be in the Crystal Lake TV show, and we they just have been kepting keeping it.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: If you deserve it, it's him.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I cannot say enough.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: Derek, if you're listening, your sweetheart loved you, man, and you are the ultimate Jason.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: I do think they're gonna have Jason in the new show.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: And wouldn't it be cool so if Derek has already been cast and in the speed, they're just keeping it under wraps.
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: He deserves it, man.
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: He deserves all the praise for that.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that would be that would be very cool.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna shout out real quick.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: I know this is the end of these, but uh Sweet Revenge came out last it's about vignette, it's 13 minutes long.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, check that out.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: They took it off Angry Orchid, and now back on YouTube, those of you can watch it.
- 49:27SPEAKER_01: And then Peacock's 824 uh Crystal Lake comes out October 14th.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: So we'll have to talk about that.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's more, there's more Jason out there to be had, and I'm sure that if Crystal Lake does well, this is gonna be a new wave of Jason stuff coming.
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: We need it, man.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: It's time, I think it's time to bring him back.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: You know, 2009?
- 49:49SPEAKER_00: I think, like you said, there was there was some fatigue.
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, at one point though, not me.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: No, no, not from us, but but there was, and I get it.
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: But I think we're well past that, and I think it's time for him to come back.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: One thing I've been dying to know, I know we're running late here.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: I just want you to answer real quick.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: We watched all these.
- 50:07SPEAKER_01: You watched all the Friday 13ths now.
- 50:09SPEAKER_01: What you've already had, quickly, quickly, quickly, give me your top five horror franchises now.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, whole franchise.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, tier.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: Can you do that?
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: Because I was really thinking about this.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: And I'll give you my top two.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: I I put Halloween first, Friday the 13th, new uh nightmare on Elm Street screen, Texas Chainsaw.
- 50:32SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: Man, I I don't know if I could do five off the top of my head.
- 50:37SPEAKER_00: I will say, and I think I've told you this before, just for what it what the movies mean to me, Nightmare is my is my top franchise because out of all the franchises that are out there, this is the one that I remember watching with my dad.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: You know, my dad loved Freddie.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so for me, I don't man, anytime I go watch Freddie, I'm transported back to watching those movies with my dad.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: So that's that's Nightmares my my number one.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: And Friday 13th is a very close number two.
- 51:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, because uh there's there they came out like you said, every summer there was a new one.
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the mask we said in the mask episode, to me, the hockey mask is the definitive definitive horror look, you know, everything about so yeah, Friday the 13th is is a is a close number two.
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: And I think if I didn't have the nostalgia factor going on with with Friday the third or with Nightmare, I think Friday the 13th would probably be my bimbalhead.
- 51:45SPEAKER_01: So Friday edges up Halloween for you, just based on the nostalgia.
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: Just reduction, yeah.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just but I but I will like I said, like I think with the the number of Jason movies that are out there, the consistency of them.
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: Um how do you ignore that?
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, it's been so fun watching it, and uh, some of my earliest memories have been watching Friday the 13th.
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: I can't honestly we go back to episode zero, but I can remember being I couldn't have been older than six, yeah, and sitting down and seeing Friday the 13th, part three, and Jason getting that hockey mask and going, I love it, yeah, and just being sold right then, and it and it all started from there, yeah, Paul.
- 52:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so that's really my I mean my love for it all started with Jason.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: I you know, I was a horror fan because of other movies, but once I became a horror fan, once I knew like this is who I am and this is who I'm always gonna be, I'm always gonna be a horror guy.
- 52:50SPEAKER_00: You're a horror movie.
- 52:50SPEAKER_00: At that point, uh, that's when those these Jason movies were coming out every summer.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: So my earliest memories of like getting excited about going to the movies to see the latest whatever, it was going to see the latest Jason movie.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: You know, that was that's just that's just what it was.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: And they're so fun, man.
- 53:13SPEAKER_00: So much fun.
- 53:13SPEAKER_00: And watching them all again this past week, it's I really brought back some good memories for you.
- 53:19SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: Just reminded why this franchise is so great, why it's so many people vote.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, I think it's time for it to come back.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: And I I hope that crystal like I think what you said, it'll definitely help.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: I hope so.
- 53:38SPEAKER_00: I hope so.
- 53:39SPEAKER_00: Time time's gonna tell, and we only have to wait a couple more, a couple months to see it.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so before we know this was fun.
- 53:45SPEAKER_00: So this episode, I'm looking at the counter here.
- 53:49SPEAKER_00: We are at an hour and a half.
- 53:51SPEAKER_00: So, what I want to do next week, I'm going on vacation, like an actual vacation, which I haven't gone on in quite a while.
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: So, I think I'm gonna split this episode into two halves so that way I can post one half now.
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: I can post one half next week while I'm on vacation and we don't miss a beat.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: Thank god.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: What are we gonna talk about when we when we come back?
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: This is what I want to talk about.
- 54:16SPEAKER_00: We got an Instagram DM from a person, I'm not gonna name his name, but he sent me a wonderful DM thanking us for our show, our podcast, and saying that he has had trouble finding common ground with his son, and listening to our podcast and uh watching horror movies together has brought them closer together.
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 54:51SPEAKER_00: And man, that I love hearing that seriously, that is the best compliment that I can think of as a podcast host, but to the bigger picture is something that you and I have kind of danced around before, which is horror bringing people together.
- 55:10SPEAKER_00: And that's what I want to talk about.
- 55:11SPEAKER_00: I want to do a whole episode where we just talk about how horror can be therapy.
- 55:20SPEAKER_00: Horror is very therapeutic for for people like us.
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, this it's a stress relief, it's a stress relief, it helps me you know maintain my sanity.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it does, you know.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, um, but it you know can bring people together like this gentleman and his son.
- 55:41SPEAKER_00: Uh you like you and me, it brought us together, you know, and and um you can someone who maybe has never seen a horror movie before, you can introduce them to horror movies and then maybe they become fans, and now you have something to talking about you, Timmy.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: You have something in common that you never knew you had in common before or didn't even have in common before, you know.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: So that's what I want to talk about.
- 56:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's gonna be more a little more of an abstract episode because we're gonna be talking kind of more about feelings and psychology and stuff, but I think it's worth talking about.
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: I think it's worth exploring, you know, the good that can come out of this hobby of ours.
- 56:26SPEAKER_00: Because there is good that can come out of it.
- 56:28SPEAKER_00: This is not, you know, this is not like um you know, horror gets a bad rat.
- 56:36SPEAKER_01: It is I think it's people coming around and this thing, it's from when we were kids to now it's definitely changing.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: Well, and I want to explore that as well because I I think I told you I was reading an article not too long ago where they're talking about when you look back later on in the future, when you look back, you're gonna look at 2026 and you're gonna say that's turning point that's when things changed for horror.
- 57:00SPEAKER_00: And I'll talk about that article a little bit in the next episode.
- 57:03SPEAKER_00: Um, but this is yeah, this is this is gonna be fun to talk about, you know.
- 57:08SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be awesome.
- 57:09SPEAKER_00: It's there's there's it's not all bad.
- 57:12SPEAKER_00: It's there's a lot of good that can come out of this.
- 57:14SPEAKER_00: It's all good, good.
- 57:15SPEAKER_00: Well, I think it's all good.
- 57:16SPEAKER_00: A lot of people think it's all bad, but I'm gonna turn them on to something different then.
- 57:20SPEAKER_00: I I want to show people that you know there is there is a lot of good that comes out of this.
- 57:25SPEAKER_00: I think that for every trial that you can look back and say, oh, this person killed this person because they watched the horror movie.
- 57:34SPEAKER_00: I would probably I mean, I don't know if you can quantify this, but there's probably a lot of lives that have been saved by horror movies.
- 57:42SPEAKER_00: There's probably a lot of people who would have gone out and committed some terrible atrocities if they didn't have horror as their as their reset button.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I wouldn't.
- 57:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, because look, I mean, I know we got to end real quick, but Jeffrey Dahmer, do you know what he watched over and over and over before he killed people?
- 57:59SPEAKER_01: Return of the Jedi.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: And people aren't going, well, we got to get Return of the Jedi out of you.
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: Even put the context that look like Darcydious.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, is that right?
- 58:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I didn't hear that.
- 58:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:12SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, so folks, uh, if you're listening to this, you just listened to the end of part two of our look back at the Friday 13th franchise.
