- 0:47Week five of the 2026 season is over.
- 0:49But what a historic weekend it was.
- 0:51We had quarterbacks reaching major milestones, rookies wreaking havoc, and a few overtime games, some with some surprise endings.
- 0:58We have this and more coming up with our guest Ed Cleese as we review the history of Week 5, 2026 in the NFL.
- 1:11Hello my football friends.
- 1:11This is Darren Hayes of pigskindispatch.com welcome once again to the Pig Pen, your portal deposit of football history.
- 1:16And welcome to of last week's games in the NFL.
- 1:21Week 5 is over, 2026.
- 1:23Ed Cleese joins us as he does every week during the season.
- 1:26Ed, welcome back to the Pig Pen.
- 1:27Hello, Darren.
- 1:29Ed, you seem a little solemn today.
- 1:32I am just still stewing, Darren, and if I may, I would just like to take the floor for a moment before we delve into the history, just to get some things off of my chest, if that's okay.
- 1:47Certainly, certainly.
- 1:48Okay.
- 1:49So back In November of 1997, there was a game between the Giants and the Redskins.
- 1:54The first time the Giants ever went to Landover after the Redskins moved from rfk.
- 1:59And that was a Sunday night game and it was an important game.
- 2:02And when that game ended, Darren, I said, you know what the good news is?
- 2:05I'll never have to see anything like that ever again.
- 2:09Because what happened that night, Darren, is early in the game our quarterback Gus Farot scored a touchdown and in celebration he banged his head against the wall.
- 2:18He knocked himself out of the game for the rest of the game.
- 2:22And Jeff Hostetler came in as his backup that night and proceeded along with the Giants and the rest of his Redskins teammates to produce a comedy of errors that I'd never quite seen before in an NFL game.
- 2:35It went into overtime, tied at 7 and in overtime both teams exchanged missed field goals, turnovers.
- 2:42And then as the Redskins were driving for the what would have been game winning field goal, Michael Westbrook, a receiver, didn't like what he a ref call so he took his helmet off and threw it 15 yard penalty
- 2:55which knocked them out of field goal range.
- 2:57This all culminated in a 7 to 7 tie.
- 3:01And I said to myself that has haunted me for 30 years, but at least I'll never have to relive it again.
- 3:09And you know what happened, Darren, just this past Sunday?
- 3:12History.
- 3:13I know what happened.
- 3:14I would say history repeated itself, but it actually didn't because this was somehow worse.
- 3:22Way worse.
- 3:24I don't need to go into what happened.
- 3:26I think at this point everybody knows.
- 3:28But what I can tell you Darren is at the end of this game.
- 3:33This is not hindsight.
- 3:35This is not me going back and looking only at the results.
- 3:39With about 40 seconds left, Darren, I'm pacing on my deck.
- 3:44We just got the greatest gift ever by the Giants missing a field goal and then fumbling in overtime.
- 3:49We're going to win this game on a miracle, right?
- 3:52We're going to win it on a miracle.
- 3:53Thank goodness for finally catching a break.
- 3:56And with 40 seconds left and the clock running, I start saying, what are you guys doing?
- 4:00Go faster, go faster, go faster.
- 4:02I'm like, what are they doing?
- 4:03What are they doing?
- 4:04What are they doing?
- 4:05I'm not panicked yet because you know they're going to eventually spike it or get up and run a play.
- 4:11And then about the 15 second mark, Darren, I'm losing my mind.
- 4:16I'm jumping up and down on the deck and I notice there's nothing happening on our sideline.
- 4:22They're clueless.
- 4:23It's unbelievable, Darren.
- 4:26And then, of course, what happens happens.
- 4:28I don't even want to say what happens, but what happens happens.
- 4:31It's over.
- 4:32I stand there in stunned disbelief.
- 4:34And you know what I really think it boils down to, Darren, and I'm totally serious about this is me on my deck.
- 4:44People say, do you think you know more than an NFL coach?
- 4:47And when it comes to that, the answer is yes.
- 4:51I watch way more football than Dan Quinn or.
- 4:56Or any other head coach watches.
- 4:58They watch film.
- 5:00They know a thousand times more about strategy and formations and breaking down film than I do.
- 5:06But they don't watch a lot of football as a fan, as a spectator, start to finish.
- 5:11So I don't think they have all this clock stuff, all the nuance down like me on my deck does, and it's baffling to me.
- 5:20And they didn't understand what was going on.
- 5:24They had trouble with the math because they probably just don't see it very often.
- 5:30But I see it way too often, and I will see it in my nightmares 29 years from now, the same way I saw seven to seven in 1997.
- 5:42Well, I, I mean, I think almost every NFL team, maybe the commanders are the exception, has a time expert up in the booth.
- 5:52He's in the headset.
- 5:54That's where a lot.
- 5:55So these coaches don't have to think about.
- 5:57They.
- 5:57They've got a lot going on.
- 5:59Obviously, if they do have a guy, he ought to be canned, because that was probably.
- 6:05But even Jaden Daniels, a starting quarterback in the NFL, you, you know, Better than to.
- 6:11I mean, the play call was horrendous to have that rollout.
- 6:16Why have a pass play go.
- 6:17Go to get you in the spot that your kicker likes to kick from the most.
- 6:21You know, center of the field, hash whatever he wants, you know, take a knee there, you know, spike the ball, get your kicking team on there.
- 6:30That's a smart.
- 6:31What they did.
- 6:32I have no idea.
- 6:33Well, it was a total.
- 6:34It was a total panic because they.
- 6:37What happened is they were trying to run a pass play.
- 6:41I think that was going to result in.
- 6:44They should have either wrote it earlier or they thought Daniels would throw it out of bounds.
- 6:49That.
- 6:49You cannot absolve Jane Daniels from this at all.
- 6:52And I'm not.
- 6:53Because once the ball was snapped, you have to trust that your quarterback can know that, okay?
- 6:58These guys are buffoons on the sidelines.
- 7:00I'm not going to let them make me look this bad.
- 7:02They put him in a terrible position.
- 7:04They should have been jumping up and down with 30 seconds left to just spike the ball right now, you know, as the time was ticking.
- 7:11So he.
- 7:11He.
- 7:12He.
- 7:12He.
- 7:13He wears this as well, but not to the level of the coaches.
- 7:17And what you talked about, Darren, is the.
- 7:19The little expert everybody employs.
- 7:22Now, I don't really see how that helps on game day, because if you have somebody in the booth and the clock's ticking down, what is he yelling into?
- 7:30Dan Quinn's headset, Who's yelling into the offensive coordinator's headset, who's yelling into Daniel's headset?
- 7:37You know what I mean?
- 7:38It's like, I don't know if there's enough time for that many cooks in the kitchen.
- 7:43It choreographs the whole ending, you know, you.
- 7:46Especially when you have.
- 7:47Take your last time out, you know, and I can't remember when they took that last time out, but early.
- 7:53But.
- 7:54So they.
- 7:55They had time to sit there and say, okay, here's what could play out here.
- 7:59Now, who knows that?
- 8:00You know, who can imagine that Scatter Boo is going to get a forced fumble on him, and Washington's going to recover and go right down the field.
- 8:08You know, like you said, it looked like a miracle moment the other way.
- 8:11And then the Giants end up getting a gift, you know, and it's, you know, both of them.
- 8:15They're kissing their sister.
- 8:16They both blew the game.
- 8:18They both had the opportunity to win the game.
- 8:20Both teams did.
- 8:21And didn't seem like either team wanted to do that, but.
- 8:24Well, I think.
- 8:25I think maybe we probably talked about this one A little bit is we have multiple other games to talk about this week from this past weekend, but if you want to have a final word on it, go ahead.
- 8:34No, I think I've said what I needed to say and it will live.
- 8:39Like I said, it will live in the nightmares forever.
- 8:42Hard one to shoot.
- 8:44Yeah.
- 8:44You.
- 8:45You won't forget this game.
- 8:46You have that going for you.
- 8:47I will not forget this game.
- 8:49Most NFL fans will not forget that.
- 8:51I will not forget this game.
- 8:52No, Darren, I will not.
- 8:54But that was one of the overtime games we had this weekend.
- 8:58We had three overtime games all sort of late Sunday into Monday.
- 9:05Sunday night.
- 9:05It was, it was great.
- 9:06All the, the final games were, were overtime throwers.
- 9:09And I'm sitting there thinking, man, three overtime games in one weekend.
- 9:12That is quite a bit.
- 9:14But it's not even anywhere near a record.
- 9:17The record was five games, I believe back in 2006.
- 9:22There was five overtime games in one.
- 9:26It pretty kind of unusual for three OT games, but not by far the record.
- 9:31Not the record.
- 9:32Well, the NFC east may have almost set a record because they had four teams playing this weekend.
- 9:38One, two teams playing each other, and nobody won a game, which is kind of funny.
- 9:43The Cowboys lost their first ever.
- 9:46This does not count Thanksgiving, of course.
- 9:48This is just Thursday Night Football, their first ever home loss on Thursday Night Football.
- 9:53And now we've had two NFC east teams, Darren, Lose games this year in regulation when they were kicking off with eight seconds or less on the clock, tied or leading.
- 10:05So that is bananas that both the Cowboys and the Eagles now have losses in that specific situation.
- 10:14Yeah, it looked very similar, almost not really a mirror image, but the similar circumstance of having, know that Jacksonville having that great kick return and getting themselves into the field goal range.
- 10:28You know, of course their guy can kick from the other end zone.
- 10:31I think he's, he's got quite a leg on him.
- 10:32Mr.
- 10:33Little does, but that was really cool.
- 10:36But there was a really surprising factor because Jacksonville's defense held Philadelphia to 22 yards rushing.
- 10:4422 yards rushing in the NFL.
- 10:46I think you and I blocking for each other might be able to muster out 22 yards maybe in a whole game.
- 10:52This is an NFL team against NFL team.
- 10:55That is quite a testament to Jacksonville and maybe with.
- 11:01Mr.
- 11:02What they had a guy retired last week and traded Johnson another starter.
- 11:06So you get rid of half your offensive line and you expect to, you know, do well.
- 11:10You're not going to run the ball.
- 11:11I guess that's, that's wild.
- 11:13We've got some other Head to head Notes the the Packers.
- 11:17You know the Bears may have broken through last year with that big win against the packers in the playoffs, but they still haven't figured out their Lambo problems because now the packers have won 14 of the last 17
- 11:29games between the two teams in Lambeau.
- 11:31So that's still a bugaboo for the Bears and that is now the Bengals have beaten the Dolphins three times in a row.
- 11:37That is actually the Bengals longest streak ever against the Dolphins.
- 11:41They actually had a nine game losing stre week one time to the Dolphins that spanned from 1978 through 2000.
- 11:48So the Bengals have finally figured out the Dolphins mystery.
- 11:52And the other thing that I thought was kind of interesting is we have the Saints and Bucks this year so far and we're only in week five.
- 11:59Both of those teams have had the somewhat rare three game homestand.
- 12:04It's becoming a little more common with the new schedule, but it's still rare.
- 12:08Both of them lost all three games.
- 12:11Wow, that is unbelievable.
- 12:13I didn't catch that part.
- 12:14Yep.
- 12:14Yeah, very interesting.
- 12:16But when you're speaking about the Saints, you know the.
- 12:20With 200 yards passing, Kyler Murray has really put himself into some elite company.
- 12:26Now I would never thought this about Kyler Murray.
- 12:29This is kind of surprising to me.
- 12:31That marks his 15th career 200 yard passing game with 50 yards rushing in a game.
- 12:37And only Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen have more or tied or are tied with him since 2019 when when he, Kyler came into the league which kind of surprised me.
- 12:47I would never thought he would have had that many games of that stature.
- 12:52Yeah, he's got, I mean he's had, you know, I'm not a huge fan but he's certainly had a non bust career depending on how you want to look at it or spin it.
- 13:01He's still going to need to get.
- 13:02A lot better though.
- 13:04Yeah.
- 13:05Kind of quiet in those games I guess because they weren't very popular.
- 13:08Right.
- 13:09That's true.
- 13:11Looking, looking at our own five Chargers, Darren, it's the first time they have been that the chargers have started 0 and 5 since 2003.
- 13:21In 2003 they did win their sixth game but they wound up 4 and 12 and we'll see if they can hold off.
- 13:28The 2000 chargers started 0 and 11 that year before they finally won a game.
- 13:36And ironically Jim Harbaugh started five of those losses for the Chargers in 2000.
- 13:43Yeah, that's the first time since Harbaugh was with the Chargers and with the Carolina Panthers later on that year where he didn't play any games, where he was part of a five game losing streak till now.
- 13:56Yikes.
- 13:57Kind of surprising.
- 13:58And now San Francisco.
- 14:00This is kind of cool in a way, but I guess Seattle probably doesn't care.
- 14:03That's the fifth straight time the 49ers have won in Seattle in the regular season.
- 14:09I'm sure Seattle will point out, well, we won the one that really mattered last year.
- 14:12We beat him by 35 in the playoffs and we won the super bowl, so who cares?
- 14:16But the 49ers do have their number in Seattle.
- 14:20And as we saw, Josh Allen got his first ever overtime win, which is kind of strange.
- 14:26On Monday night he was 07.
- 14:28Now he's 1 and 7.
- 14:29And you know, it's funny, those, those losses, they're very memorable.
- 14:33Even as a non Bills fan.
- 14:35I remember the playoff losses, of course, the 13 second game being one of them.
- 14:38In Kansas City last year against Denver, he had one against Houston, I remember.
- 14:42And then even in the regular season, I remember they had that crazy game against the Vikings where they fumbled into the end zone and Justin Jefferson had that wild like 4th and 22 catch.
- 14:52They had the jets punt return on opening the opening Monday night of the season a couple years ago and overtime that they lost.
- 14:59And they also had a Tom Brady game in Tampa where they lost in overtime.
- 15:03So maybe Josh Allen has shaken those overtime ghosts.
- 15:07Yeah, one thing that really got shaken is the Rams after that game, fired their kicker the next morning.
- 15:13And so they are shopping for a new kicker.
- 15:16So missing two field goals and you lose by three in overtime.
- 15:19I guess that'll do it to you.
- 15:20No more thicker kicker.
- 15:22Right, Right.
- 15:25I had, you know, some really exciting things that happened historically for Jared Goff.
- 15:31You know that great win that him and the Lions had over the Cardinals.
- 15:35He had a three touchdown game zero turnover performance in week five.
- 15:41Now he's racked up 12 touchdowns and no turnovers in these first five games.
- 15:46And, and that's making him the first player in NFL history to ever do that feat in NFL history in the first five games of a season, which I found remarkable that nobody's ever done that.
- 15:59But I guess you always fumble the ball away or you throw an interception.
- 16:02Somewhere or you don't have that, or if you're playing conservatively not turning it over, you're not also getting the touchdowns.
- 16:08Right, right, right.
- 16:10So that, so that's, that's a big milestone he hit.
- 16:12Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 16:14You ready for score, Gami?
- 16:17Yeah, well, I have one One more thing, because I got to talk about my guy.
- 16:20Aaron.
- 16:21Aaron Rodgers.
- 16:22That's right.
- 16:23Yeah.
- 16:23He had with his victory over the Colts last weekend.
- 16:27That's his 90th career game with three or more touchdown passes.
- 16:32That puts him up in elite company.
- 16:34You know, we know he passed, I believe, Ben Roethlisberger last week with the touchdown passes and wins this week with that 90 game, he joins the elite company of Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Peyton Manning as the sole
- 16:47players in NFL history that have a 90 game mark of throwing three touchdown passes.
- 16:52Again, that's an impressive list.
- 16:55It sure is.
- 16:56Sort of a who's who.
- 16:58The other thing I have is rookie David Bailey of the Jets.
- 17:04You know, the rookie sensation.
- 17:05Number two overall pick three sacks and tied Hugh Douglas's 1995 franchise record for the most sacks in a single game since the NFL began tracking these in 1982.
- 17:17To make matters worse for Cleveland, DeSean Watson was brought down a staggering eight times on the afternoon.
- 17:23I'm sure he was hitting the ice tub earlier this week.
- 17:27Well, if you listen to our picks, Darren, you would have known that was coming.
- 17:32Yeah, that's true.
- 17:33That's true.
- 17:34All right, let's get into some Scoragami score gummy.
- 17:37Well, we'll start where we always start.
- 17:39Darren, what do you think?
- 17:40Well, I'll just.
- 17:41I'll be a spoiler.
- 17:42There was no Scoragami this weekend.
- 17:45However, there was some pretty low numbers.
- 17:49So what do you think was the most rare score on the board?
- 17:53I'm gonna say that.
- 17:5445:17 Raiders in New England game.
- 17:58No, and that wasn't even close.
- 18:00Actually, that has happened 27 times.
- 18:04Really?
- 18:04There are three games on the board, Darren, that have happened fewer than 10 times.
- 18:10And your game is the winner.
- 18:15The third, the Steelers 3422 victory over the Colts has only happened now four times in NFL history.
- 18:23Okay.
- 18:24Yep.
- 18:25The.
- 18:26The Commander's Giants tie has at 27.
- 18:3027 has only happened seven times.
- 18:32Kind of weird.
- 18:33Washington is involved in three of those seven games.
- 18:37There was one in 2016 that I remember very well in London against the Bengals.
- 18:41And then the.
- 18:42The earliest one we had before that was in 1970, I believe.
- 18:47So the Red.
- 18:47The Washington has had the last two 27 to 27 ties.
- 18:52The first one was against your Steelers, a game I'm sure you remember in 1960.
- 18:5727, 27 Redskins and Steelers.
- 18:59Bobby Lane kicks and field goals for y'.
- 19:01All.
- 19:02Yeah, I'm not even sure if my parents remember the 1960 game, so.
- 19:06Gotcha.
- 19:07Gotcha.
- 19:07Yeah, the.
- 19:08The most common score of the.
- 19:10Of the weekend was 130 times.
- 19:14We've had a 2317 game, which was the final in the Broncos and Chargers.
- 19:20But overall, Darren, this was a pretty rare week.
- 19:23That was the only game that was over 100 times.
- 19:27So our score gummy index blows all the other four weeks out of the water.
- 19:32We have a new leader.
- 19:33It's a 45.8 is the score of.
- 19:37Index score for week five, which passes week one as the most rare.
- 19:4453.75.
- 19:46I.
- 19:46I didn't think it could be done, but that we got close.
- 19:49What, in week three.
- 19:49I'm sorry.
- 19:50Week three.
- 19:50Week three.
- 19:51I don't want to.
- 19:51I don't want to cheat.
- 19:52Week three.
- 19:53Week three was 53.18.
- 19:55So this one is.
- 19:56This one is now number one.
- 19:59Wow, that's.
- 20:00That's amazing.
- 20:00I thought those 53s were going to probably hold up all year, but now we're in the 40s.
- 20:0645.8.
- 20:07Yep.
- 20:07We had.
- 20:07We had several that were the.
- 20:10The mean on this one was way lower.
- 20:14Okay, there you go.
- 20:16Maybe I won't get you started again, but maybe that not.
- 20:19Not having that tie ended up making it lower.
- 20:25Maybe it would have been, you know, a 30 to 27 game.
- 20:27Either way would have maybe shot that up.
- 20:29It would have shot that up a little bit.
- 20:31So I guess maybe this.
- 20:32It was good for the Scoragami index.
- 20:35And bad for my heart, I guess so.
- 20:38I, you know, I almost thought when I saw that 20, 27.
- 20:4127 to 27.
- 20:42I thought we might have the scoregasm, but I don't know if it counts if your team doesn't win, but at least.
- 20:47Yeah, no, there was.
- 20:49There was none of that on the deck.
- 20:51I can tell you that right now.
- 20:53Okay.
- 20:53All right.
- 20:55All right.
- 20:56Well, that is a great week of history.
- 20:58You know, it's great to look back at.
- 21:00Some games were just played within, you know, just hours ago, days ago.
- 21:04And you can take some great history out of it and make it evergreen and appreciate what these folks are doing in the modern times compared to all of NFL history.
- 21:14We're glad that we could share it with you and Ed, that you could join us and help us to enjoy this history.
- 21:20And we appreciate you.
