- 0:00Speaker 1: For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness
- 0:05Speaker 1: is an iniquity, an idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the
- 0:09Speaker 1: word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from
- 0:13Speaker 1: being king. 1 Samuel 15.13 Lord, through today's reading of
- 0:20Speaker 1: 1 Samuel and through the life of Saul, I see
- 0:23Speaker 1: that obedience is better than sacrifice. With this truth, I
- 0:28Speaker 1: am now going through my life Like the Amalekites, I
- 0:32Speaker 1: will get rid of anything that is contrary to your
- 0:34Speaker 1: word and to the life you are helping me to build.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I will not let the king agags in my life
- 0:42Speaker 1: that represent sinful and destructive behaviors linger around me when
- 0:47Speaker 1: you've commanded me to eradicate them completely. I will not
- 0:52Speaker 1: partner myself with people who have corrupt and compromising character,
- 0:57Speaker 1: no matter how much wealth they promise me. Instead, like Samuel,
- 1:03Speaker 1: I will sever all ties because obedience to you is
- 1:07Speaker 1: better than sacrificing my integrity for treasures and wealth that
- 1:11Speaker 1: will bring my downfall. There's no disloyalty in me, God.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I am unwavering and locked into my purpose. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Thanks for making prayer a priority in your life. To

- 1:47Speaker 2: Saul disobeys God. In our last story, we learned about
- 1:52Speaker 2: Jonathan's bravery against the Philistines. Jonathan broke up the enemy's
- 1:57Speaker 2: camp and sent them into a frenzy. Saul capitalized on
- 2:01Speaker 2: Jonathan's bravery and sent his army in to defeat the Philistines.
- 2:06Speaker 2: In this story, we will learn about Saul's disobedience towards
- 2:09Speaker 2: God because of his desire to please the people instead
- 2:13Speaker 2: of God, inspired by the book of 1 Samuel.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:21Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. But before we get to today's episode,

- 2:46Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and
- 2:49Speaker 3: truth in God's word. That's why I want to help

- 3:09Speaker 3: That's JackGraham.org. JackGraham.org. In our previous story, we focused on
- 3:17Speaker 3: Jonathan's actions, which stood in stark contrast to his father,
- 3:21Speaker 3: King Saul. When Saul tried to have Jonathan killed for
- 3:24Speaker 3: disobeying a senseless order, the people rallied around Jonathan and
- 3:28Speaker 3: protected him. Saul was by now king only in title.
- 3:34Speaker 3: He was no longer the strong leader that he wanted
- 3:37Speaker 3: to be and God commanded him to be. His selfish
- 3:40Speaker 3: pride and impatience had cost him nearly everything. Today we'll
- 3:45Speaker 3: see Saul disobey God in a desperate attempt to be
- 3:48Speaker 3: a people pleaser rather than a godly leader. We will
- 3:51Speaker 3: see how Saul's need to be liked, accepted, and praised
- 3:54Speaker 3: by the people will lead him to lie and deceive.
- 3:58Speaker 3: But Samuel, speaking for God, will see right through it
- 4:00Speaker 3: all and give Saul a devastating word from the Lord.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Let's listen to today's scripture.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Saul led Israel with a strong arm. Battle after battle,
- 4:12Speaker 2: the armies of Israel defended themselves against enemy kingdoms. Nations
- 4:17Speaker 2: that had once oppressed Israel now feared them. and Saul
- 4:21Speaker 2: began to regain favor from the people. One day, a
- 4:25Speaker 2: word of the Lord came to Samuel. Samuel entered into
- 4:29Speaker 2: the courts of Saul. This was the first time they
- 4:32Speaker 2: had spoken since Saul unrightfully acted as priest over Israel
- 4:36Speaker 2: before battle. Samuel could barely look at Saul anymore. His
- 4:41Speaker 2: demeanor had slowly changed from humble servant to arrogant king. Nevertheless,
- 4:47Speaker 2: Samuel had a message from God to share. Saul, God
- 4:52Speaker 2: has remembered the Amalekites and their crimes against them and
- 4:56Speaker 2: made life hard. Now it is your duty to rise
- 4:59Speaker 2: up against them. However, you must leave none of them alive. None.
- 5:05Speaker 2: No soldier, warrior, woman, animal, or riches. Saul wasted no time,
- 5:13Speaker 2: for the Amalekites were truly wicked people. Their evil had
- 5:17Speaker 2: corrupted the land surrounding them, and their oppression knew no bounds.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Saul was grateful for a chance to prove himself to
- 5:25Speaker 2: God and to Samuel. His sword was heavy against the
- 5:29Speaker 2: armies of the Amalekites. The armies of Israel prevailed swiftly
- 5:34Speaker 2: and laid waste to the city. All that remained was
- 5:37Speaker 2: their king, Agag. and the riches of their livestock. Saul
- 5:42Speaker 2: considered killing Agag and burning his riches. Instead, Saul spared
- 5:47Speaker 2: Agag to parade him in front of the people, and
- 5:51Speaker 2: he took all the livestock, riches, and wealth of the
- 5:54Speaker 2: city for himself. Saul brought the spoils of war back
- 5:58Speaker 2: to himself and the people of Israel, and he sat
- 6:01Speaker 2: on the wealth of a corrupt nation. As he returned
- 6:04Speaker 2: to Israel, Saul made a monument for himself. a clear
- 6:09Speaker 2: representation of his delusion of self-importance. Samuel was dwelling alone
- 6:14Speaker 2: in the cool of his home when the Lord came
- 6:16Speaker 2: to him and spoke, saying, Saul has turned his back
- 6:19Speaker 2: from me, and I regret ever making him king. Samuel
- 6:24Speaker 2: cried to the Lord all night in anger, for Saul
- 6:28Speaker 2: had been exactly what he warned the people of. Early
- 6:32Speaker 2: the next day, Samuel approached the throne room of Saul.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Saul was elated to see Samuel, ignorant of his anger
- 6:39Speaker 2: towards him. Blessed are you, Samuel. Look, I have done
- 6:43Speaker 2: as God commanded. The Amalekites are wiped away. What are
- 6:46Speaker 2: these sounds I hear of sheep and oxen? Samuel interrupted.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Samuel was old and frail, yet he spoke with a
- 6:53Speaker 2: strength that demanded attention. They are from the Amalekites, the people.
- 6:59Speaker 2: They wanted me to spare them to make sacrifices unto God.
- 7:03Speaker 2: In fact, I... Samuel interrupted again with his hand in
- 7:06Speaker 2: the air. Stop, he yelled. Samuel knew Saul was lying.
- 7:11Speaker 2: He had no intention of sacrificing anything to the Lord.
- 7:15Speaker 2: You were appointed king by God, and you were given
- 7:19Speaker 2: a mission to consume the Amalekites. You were instructed to
- 7:23Speaker 2: spare nothing and take nothing. So tell me, Saul, why
- 7:27Speaker 2: did you not obey? Why did you pounce on the
- 7:30Speaker 2: spoils and riches? Saul smiled in fake ignorance. He laughed
- 7:35Speaker 2: as though he did not see anything wrong with his actions.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Standing up from his throne, Saul stepped down and put
- 7:42Speaker 2: his hand on Samuel's shoulder and said, Samuel, I have
- 7:46Speaker 2: simply obeyed the voice of God. It is the people
- 7:50Speaker 2: that wanted the spoils of war, not me. yet I
- 7:53Speaker 2: took the best of everything to sacrifice to God. Samuel
- 7:57Speaker 2: brushed the king's hands off his shoulder. Saul was over
- 8:01Speaker 2: two feet taller than Samuel, yet Samuel in this moment
- 8:05Speaker 2: seemed to loom over him like a nightmare. Has God
- 8:09Speaker 2: any delight in vain sacrifices when you have ignored his voice?
- 8:14Speaker 2: Behold Saul, it is far better to obey than to sacrifice.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Rebellion is like witchcraft to him. And to presume you
- 8:23Speaker 2: know better than him is worse than idolatry. Saul's eyes
- 8:28Speaker 2: began to widen as he listened to Samuel. Samuel rose
- 8:32Speaker 2: his arm and pointed to Saul. Because you have rejected
- 8:35Speaker 2: God as your Lord, he has rejected you as king.
- 8:40Speaker 2: As Samuel said this, he turned and stormed off. Saul
- 8:44Speaker 2: chased after Samuel. No, Samuel, no, I have sinned. I
- 8:49Speaker 2: feared the people would turn against me. Saul begged him
- 8:52Speaker 2: to stay. Please, pardon my sin. Stay here and help
- 8:56Speaker 2: me atone. Saul's fear of losing his throne caused a panic.
- 9:01Speaker 2: He seized Samuel's robes and tugged back for him to stay.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Samuel's robes began to tear. The sound of the tears
- 9:09Speaker 2: echoed in the empty throne room. Samuel and Saul stood
- 9:13Speaker 2: there looking at the torn garment. They were alone and
- 9:16Speaker 2: completely silent for a few moments. Tears streamed down Saul's face.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Samuel looked at the pathetic king in front of him.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Though he cried, Samuel could see corruption in his heart.
- 9:30Speaker 2: There was something disturbing dwelling inside him. Just as you
- 9:33Speaker 2: have torn my robe, so God has torn Israel away
- 9:37Speaker 2: from you and given it to another. Saul wept on
- 9:40Speaker 2: the floor. Samuel looked at him with compassion. He led
- 9:44Speaker 2: Saul to the altar of God to pray. God would
- 9:47Speaker 2: not change his mind. but he would not abandon Saul completely.
- 9:52Speaker 2: After they had prayed, Samuel had Saul bring King Agag
- 9:55Speaker 2: before him. Agag approached them with a smile on his face.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Agag was under the impression that Saul would not harm him,
- 10:03Speaker 2: but he had not yet met Samuel. Agag looked at
- 10:06Speaker 2: the old man and laughed. He mocked him. Samuel looked
- 10:10Speaker 2: at Agag and said, You have led with corruption, greed,
- 10:13Speaker 2: and wickedness. Your sword has made women childless. So shall
- 10:18Speaker 2: your mother become childless. And in that instant, Samuel hacked
- 10:22Speaker 2: off the head of Agag before Saul. Samuel wiped off
- 10:26Speaker 2: the blade, handed it to Saul, and left. Saul would
- 10:31Speaker 2: not see Samuel again, for death would soon take Samuel
- 10:35Speaker 2: back to the Lord. Yet Samuel grieved over Saul. He
- 10:40Speaker 2: grieved his heart and his mind. Yet Samuel would get
- 10:44Speaker 2: to see another king anointed, a king with flaws, weaknesses,
- 10:48Speaker 2: and failures. Yet he was a king that would pursue
- 10:51Speaker 2: the heart of God. Someone Israel could look on to
- 10:54Speaker 2: as an example of bravery, repentance, and worship. A shepherd
- 10:59Speaker 2: like Moses, a warrior like Joshua, and a priest like Samuel.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Today's story begins with Samuel receiving a word from God
- 11:10Speaker 3: to give to King Saul. That word was this, God
- 11:13Speaker 3: had not forgotten the cruelty of the Amalekites from the
- 11:16Speaker 3: time Israel departed Egypt, and now it was time for
- 11:19Speaker 3: them to account for their evil. So Samuel went to
- 11:23Speaker 3: Saul and gave him orders. Saul was to fight against
- 11:26Speaker 3: the Amalekites, and after God granted him victory, Saul was
- 11:30Speaker 3: to completely wipe them out. Not a single person or
- 11:33Speaker 3: even the livestock of the Amalekites was to be spared.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Saul is given an opportunity to obey God. and to
- 11:41Speaker 3: do his will completely. Israel defeated the enemy and Saul's
- 11:46Speaker 3: army carried out the mission, for the most part. Saul
- 11:50Speaker 3: kept the enemy king, Agag, alive. All the remaining Amalekites
- 11:54Speaker 3: were killed and everything considered worthless was destroyed. But they
- 11:58Speaker 3: spared the best of the livestock, taking it as plunder.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Saul was looking on as all of this happened. Rather
- 12:05Speaker 3: than completely obeying God's command, Saul wanted to please the people.
- 12:10Speaker 3: and increase his name and his power among them. But
- 12:13Speaker 3: God sees through this, of course, and Saul's disobedience greatly
- 12:17Speaker 3: displeases him, so he spoke again to Samuel. God rejects
- 12:22Speaker 3: Saul as king. Samuel was distraught. Saul, who once held
- 12:28Speaker 3: so much potential, had fallen so far, and Samuel knew
- 12:31Speaker 3: that God would not allow this to stand. Samuel returned
- 12:35Speaker 3: to Saul and on the way discovered that Saul had
- 12:38Speaker 3: built a monument to himself after the victory. It was
- 12:41Speaker 3: worse than he had even imagined. Not only was Saul
- 12:45Speaker 3: disobeying God, now he was exalting himself, seeking glory that
- 12:49Speaker 3: belonged only to the Lord. Samuel confronted Saul, who once
- 12:54Speaker 3: again made excuses and tried to justify himself. First, he
- 12:58Speaker 3: tried to couch his actions as obedience. He said he
- 13:01Speaker 3: had brought King Agag back as if this was some
- 13:04Speaker 3: kind of prize that he would give to God. and
- 13:07Speaker 3: that the people set aside the best livestock to offer
- 13:10Speaker 3: as sacrifices to the Lord. All of this was a lie.
- 13:15Speaker 3: God never told Saul to spare Agag, and he certainly
- 13:18Speaker 3: didn't ask for offerings. God's orders had been very clear.
- 13:22Speaker 3: All was to be destroyed, sparing nothing. This is another
- 13:27Speaker 3: sad story of Saul's disobedience. And it reminds us that
- 13:32Speaker 3: God does not accept disobedience or partial obedience. Partial obedience
- 13:39Speaker 3: is disobedience. Samuel then tells Saul the bad news. Because
- 13:43Speaker 3: he has rejected God, God has rejected him as king.
- 13:47Speaker 3: The throne will be taken from him and given to another.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Saul is desperate and tries once more to justify his sin.
- 13:54Speaker 3: In 1 Samuel 15 24 he says, I have sinned
- 13:59Speaker 3: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and
- 14:01Speaker 3: your words because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.
- 14:06Speaker 3: This reminds us of the words of Adam blaming Eve
- 14:09Speaker 3: for his sin in the Garden of Eden. Saul shifts
- 14:13Speaker 3: blame to the people, and he says he was just
- 14:15Speaker 3: trying to please them. He's making excuses. But it's too late.
- 14:19Speaker 3: God has seen Saul's sin and his pride, and the
- 14:23Speaker 3: Bible says pride comes before a fall. There's no turning
- 14:27Speaker 3: back now. Saul holds on to Samuel's robe and tears it,
- 14:31Speaker 3: and then Samuel tells him that just as he's torn
- 14:34Speaker 3: his garment, God will tear the kingdom away from Saul.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Samuel then does what Saul did not. He kills King
- 14:42Speaker 3: Agag right in front of Saul. He leaves, mourning Saul's disobedience,
- 14:48Speaker 3: and never sees the king again until his death. God
- 14:53Speaker 3: would bring another king, one who did have his heart and,
- 14:56Speaker 3: though not perfect, would lead God's people as God intended
- 15:00Speaker 3: and planned, and will meet him the next time. Dear God,
- 15:06Speaker 3: may we always obey you completely, not half-heartedly, but completely.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Help us to fear you more than man and to
- 15:15Speaker 3: listen to you rather than to listen to the world.
- 15:18Speaker 3: May we have the boldness to do what you have
- 15:20Speaker 3: called us to do regardless of the cost, because we
- 15:23Speaker 3: know that the cost of rejecting you is greater than
- 15:27Speaker 3: we can possibly imagine. In Christ's name, amen. Thank you
