- 0:02Speaker 1: College football with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:05Speaker 2: And, of course, everyone knows the exact right time to
- 0:08Speaker 2: start a college football show is week four of the
- 0:11Speaker 2: college football season.
- 0:12Speaker 3: There's T-Bob again.
- 0:13Speaker 4: That's right. Special guest. Glad to be back, guys. Love
- 0:17Speaker 4: coming to hang out with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:19Speaker 4: College football.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Mario Cristobal, head coach at the University of Miami. Thank
- 0:24Speaker 2: you for joining us.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I just don't find any value in it. Humans, like,
- 0:27Speaker 1: just spewing diarrhea out of their mouth. With Stu Gotts.
- 0:31Speaker 5: I can give a rat's fat ass about what he
- 0:33Speaker 5: says or does.
- 0:34Speaker 1: And the Bear. The Bear is awesome.
- 0:37Speaker 6: You're listening to College Football with Stu Gotts and the Bear.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It is the College Football Show with Stu Gotts and
- 0:44Speaker 2: the Bear.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I'm just going to say it. And T-Bob.
- 0:48Speaker 2: T-Bob, what's going on? You can check him out every morning.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Wake up Barstool, 8 to 10 a.m. Eastern on FS1. Um,
- 0:57Speaker 2: you're just here. You're here all the time. I don't
- 0:59Speaker 2: know how you get ahold of the zoom link, but
- 1:00Speaker 2: you're just here.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah.
- 1:02Speaker 4: I'm glad that, uh, I'm glad that my schedule worked out.
- 1:05Speaker 4: I didn't know if I was going to be able
- 1:07Speaker 4: to come on, but, uh, thankfully move some things around
- 1:12Speaker 4: everything lined up and we're here to talk about Stu.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Uh, the greatest college football Saturday of all time. Yeah. Uh,
- 1:20Speaker 2: bears team survived the hurricanes. We'll get to that in
- 1:23Speaker 2: just a second, but bear, uh, What a Saturday we
- 1:26Speaker 2: had this past Saturday for college football. In a year
- 1:29Speaker 2: from now, you know, a year or two from now,
- 1:32Speaker 2: what we just saw won't matter. But it matters now,
- 1:35Speaker 2: and on Saturday, that's as good as it gets.
- 1:38Speaker 1: It was like the college football gods were looking down
- 1:42Speaker 1: on us and saying, you really want to screw around
- 1:45Speaker 1: with this regular season drama and this weekend drama? mattering
- 1:49Speaker 1: and consequences for losing a game and giving yourself no
- 1:54Speaker 1: wiggle room. The rest of you really want to F
- 1:56Speaker 1: with this. So maybe, maybe the ink isn't dry. Maybe
- 2:00Speaker 1: I'm sure it's down the road already, but look, yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Two weeks in a row, a number one, lose to
- 2:05Speaker 1: an underranked team, five of the top seven lose in
- 2:08Speaker 1: the same day for the first time, Georgia, Alabama, Texas
- 2:12Speaker 1: fall for the first time in a long time on
- 2:15Speaker 1: the same day. And now you've got, Texas with two losses,
- 2:19Speaker 1: no wiggle room for the playoff the rest of the year.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You've got Alabama, two losses, probably no wiggle room the
- 2:25Speaker 1: rest of the year. What if Ohio State would have lost?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And they would have picked up a second loss, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: they're without their quarterback. So it was an unbelievable day,
- 2:35Speaker 1: a dramatic day, a day full of upsets, a day
- 2:38Speaker 1: full of survival. It was an amazing day that started.
- 2:42Speaker 1: And if you made it through about 3 a.m. Eastern
- 2:46Speaker 1: for the end of that Nebraska-Oregon game, tip of the
- 2:48Speaker 1: cap to you.
- 2:51Speaker 4: I think I'm going to take a little bit of
- 2:52Speaker 4: the opposite approach when.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Ready to fight you.
- 2:57Speaker 4: When what I took away from Saturday and as it
- 3:01Speaker 4: relates to the 2014 playoff, if anything, I think that
- 3:04Speaker 4: Saturday strengthened the argument for a 2014 playoff. Because I
- 3:08Speaker 4: certainly get what you're saying. You're saying that there's still
- 3:11Speaker 4: some stakes left in college football. And you're not wrong,
- 3:14Speaker 4: because in theory... Some of the top teams that lost Saturday,
- 3:18Speaker 4: we could say, are out of runway, but they're still
- 3:20Speaker 4: not mathematically eliminated, right?
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Like, they're still alive.
- 3:24Speaker 4: It's still not what we grew up on, where they
- 3:26Speaker 4: would have been completely out of the.
- 3:28Speaker 5: National championship picture.
- 3:29Speaker 4: And so already in a 12-team playoff era, we see
- 3:34Speaker 4: those kind of core tenets that we loved when we
- 3:37Speaker 4: were younger. We see them being diluted already, right? And
- 3:41Speaker 4: so I look at Saturday and I see... I see
- 3:45Speaker 4: that as a preview of what the 2014 playoff could
- 3:47Speaker 4: look like, that we don't actually know who's going to
- 3:51Speaker 4: win these games, and so there's a lot of value
- 3:54Speaker 4: to playing them. Like, a lot of these games could
- 3:57Speaker 4: have been first or second rounds in what the future
- 3:59Speaker 4: could look like, and ultimately, as I've sat with the
- 4:02Speaker 4: 2014 playoff more and more and more, I have a
- 4:06Speaker 4: lot of kind of inherent... distaste for it because of change, right?
- 4:11Speaker 4: Because of the sport that I grew up on and
- 4:13Speaker 4: that I loved and how vastly different it is.
- 4:15Speaker 5: However, in a vacuum, I don't hate it.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Because we're going to get a lot of great games
- 4:21Speaker 4: and great teams like we saw on Saturday in great environments.
- 4:26Speaker 4: And it's going to be settled on the field, which
- 4:28Speaker 4: is ultimately what I want. It's not being settled by
- 4:31Speaker 4: a bunch of people in a committee, picking and choosing
- 4:34Speaker 4: who gets access, who gets to play. No, ultimately it'll
- 4:37Speaker 4: be settled on the field. And Mikey, I see you
- 4:41Speaker 4: shaking your head.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Why?
- 4:44Speaker 6: Because while I agree with you that we might get
- 4:46Speaker 6: a Saturday like that, Auburn is not going to win
- 4:50Speaker 6: anything in a college football playoff, even if they eke
- 4:53Speaker 6: in and they go ahead and they win one game.
- 4:55Speaker 6: They're not going to make a run and win this thing.
- 4:58Speaker 6: So I think ultimately it is going to get diluted,
- 5:01Speaker 6: save for maybe we get a game.
- 5:03Speaker 4: So Georgia lost to Auburn at home. Well, Auburn wouldn't
- 5:06Speaker 4: make the playoff.
- 5:06Speaker 1: You're right.
- 5:06Speaker 5: So Georgia would have had to play a better team.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:09Speaker 4: And so if Georgia can lose to an Auburn at
- 5:11Speaker 4: home in the regular season, you tell me they can
- 5:13Speaker 4: get tripped up by a better team at one point
- 5:15Speaker 4: in the playoff?
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I think what Mikey is saying, though, these teams
- 5:18Speaker 2: can win a game. They're not going to make deep
- 5:19Speaker 2: runs and find themselves playing in a national championship.
- 5:22Speaker 3: That's all he said.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:24Speaker 4: What did Miami finish? 10-2 last year and let Duke
- 5:27Speaker 4: win the ACC?
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yes.
- 5:29Speaker 4: And yet they made it run all the way to
- 5:31Speaker 4: the championship? I don't know that I agree.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I think we're talking about teams ranked 15 through 24,
- 5:36Speaker 2: let's just say.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Teams like that.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I think that's what we're shifting kind of the priority
- 5:42Speaker 1: and the games that matter from the teams that have
- 5:46Speaker 1: a legitimate chance to win the national title, the 12-team playoff,
- 5:50Speaker 1: and we're shifting it to later in the year. Instead
- 5:54Speaker 1: of having a game involving Texas really matter, like if
- 5:58Speaker 1: you lose for a third time, you're out type of deal,
- 6:01Speaker 1: we're shifting it from that, the stakes that we had
- 6:03Speaker 1: on Saturday. You have zero wiggle room the rest of
- 6:06Speaker 1: it to now, okay, teams 13 to 24 who really
- 6:10Speaker 1: aren't going to do anything maybe other than win an
- 6:13Speaker 1: out bracket game and then lose. We're shifting it from
- 6:16Speaker 1: Texas and... Miami and Notre Dame and whoever else mattering to, okay,
- 6:23Speaker 1: Iowa's playing Wisconsin this week and Iowa can't afford to lose,
- 6:27Speaker 1: but Iowa needs to win. Or Arizona's playing Oklahoma State
- 6:33Speaker 1: and the winner's going to go. I think ultimately how
- 6:40Speaker 1: I am, I don't want to say coping, settling, but
- 6:44Speaker 1: I think how I'm going to ultimately wind up treating
- 6:47Speaker 1: these first round playoff games is it's football. It's going
- 6:51Speaker 1: to be on. It's kind of like the bowl games
- 6:53Speaker 1: right now that a lot of people love the bowl games.
- 6:56Speaker 1: A lot of people hate the bowl games and think
- 6:58Speaker 1: they're meaningless. I'm going to treat that first round of
- 7:01Speaker 1: lesser game, bottom top 25 kind of fringe games as
- 7:07Speaker 1: Basically glorified bowl games. It's going to be on. I'll
- 7:09Speaker 1: have it on. I'll watch it. If you don't want
- 7:11Speaker 1: to watch it, that's fine. It's crazy. If you love it.
- 7:15Speaker 5: That's crazy, bear.
- 7:16Speaker 4: I know you, you are a college football artist.
- 7:21Speaker 5: You are not going to have these games in the background.
- 7:23Speaker 5: That is a flat.
- 7:24Speaker 3: That's all.
- 7:25Speaker 1: No, it's going to be on.
- 7:27Speaker 5: Fuck in and wait.
- 7:29Speaker 4: And guys, We just saw the number one team lose
- 7:33Speaker 4: to an unranked team at back-to-back weeks.
- 7:35Speaker 1: We've got to stop pretending that we know. Post-game win probability.
- 7:41Speaker 4: I know, exactly. Post-game win probability. I understand these things.
- 7:45Speaker 4: I understand what projections say. We have to accept that
- 7:48Speaker 4: when you get 22, 18 to 22-year-olds on a field
- 7:52Speaker 4: where some are pros, some are dentists, some are radio guys,
- 7:56Speaker 4: there's so many variables at play.
- 7:59Speaker 5: We don't know what's going to happen.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Right. So we can act like we know who's going
- 8:02Speaker 4: to win, but we don't. And I'm kind of excited
- 8:04Speaker 4: about that prospect.
- 8:05Speaker 2: All right, but T-Bob is coming on the heels of
- 8:07Speaker 2: the greatest college football Saturday of all time, where it
- 8:10Speaker 2: doesn't appear that there is any really dominant great team
- 8:14Speaker 2: in college football this year, and he's saying he'd like
- 8:17Speaker 2: to see that kind of play out in the playoffs.
- 8:19Speaker 2: You just made a playoff game, Bear, in T-Bob's defense,
- 8:22Speaker 2: like the Duke's Mayo Bowl. You're just going to have
- 8:24Speaker 2: it on in the background because college football is on.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I want to see Manny Diaz with a big glop
- 8:31Speaker 1: of mayo all over him, dumped on his lap after
- 8:36Speaker 1: a big win against Arizona State or something.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Right. Talk to me dirty there.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Are you, are you, are you a Dukes? I know
- 8:43Speaker 1: Mayo was a very, very personal subject, especially in the South,
- 8:49Speaker 1: but is Dukes, is that on the good list for you? Yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know that I have a bad
- 8:55Speaker 4: Mayo to be Frank. I even love Miracle Whip, which
- 8:58Speaker 4: isn't technically mango Mayo. I love the tangy zip. I
- 9:03Speaker 4: always have my best friend Donnell. His mom used to
- 9:05Speaker 4: make them with Miracle Whip and I fell in love
- 9:07Speaker 4: with So yeah, any type of mayo, as long as
- 9:10Speaker 4: it's actually mayonnaise going in the gullet.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Here's another thing that I've heard with mayo when I've
- 9:18Speaker 1: done it and I kind of live my life by
- 9:20Speaker 1: it and my body kind of shows that I live
- 9:22Speaker 1: my life by it. For grilled cheese, you put butter
- 9:28Speaker 1: on the inside of the bread, cheese on top of
- 9:30Speaker 1: the butter, and close it up, and then you put
- 9:33Speaker 1: mayo on the outside, and you grill it with the
- 9:37Speaker 1: mayo being grilled, and the butter melts in with the cheese,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and it's really, really, really good, and probably a reason
- 9:44Speaker 1: why my statin prescription went up to like 20 milligrams.
- 9:50Speaker 3: That's it, just 20, huh? Yeah. That's a bit too far.
- 9:54Speaker 5: Mayonnaise a lot of them.
- 9:55Speaker 4: I was going to make a terrible joke. Mayonnaise a
- 9:59Speaker 4: lot of milligrams. Anyway, should we get into these games? Yes,
- 10:03Speaker 4: let's get into them. Yes, greatest college football Saturday of
- 10:05Speaker 4: all time.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Go ahead, D-Bob.
- 10:08Speaker 4: I want to start a promo, guys. Or actually, let's
- 10:11Speaker 4: start here. Let's start with some meta topics and discuss this.
- 10:14Speaker 4: If I were to ask y'all, the team that got
- 10:19Speaker 4: upset on Saturday that should be the most worried going forward, Bear,
- 10:24Speaker 4: who is that?
- 10:25Speaker 1: Can I eliminate a word from that sentence? Am I
- 10:29Speaker 1: allowed to twist it into something that I'd like to say?
- 10:33Speaker 4: Of course.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I don't think it was a team that lost. I
- 10:37Speaker 1: think it was a team that won. I think it's
- 10:38Speaker 1: Ohio State. Really? If they don't have Julian Sane, they're done.
- 10:44Speaker 1: It is a completely different team. Jeremiah Smith is a
- 10:47Speaker 1: completely different player. Even with Sane, they've been a little
- 10:51Speaker 1: bit sporadic at times on offense, and he hasn't necessarily
- 10:56Speaker 1: been the guy that he was last year. I think
- 10:58Speaker 1: the guy maybe they thought that a lot of people
- 11:00Speaker 1: thought he was going to be. But if they have
- 11:02Speaker 1: to go to a freshman– that offense is going to
- 11:05Speaker 1: suffer dramatically. I don't know for sure how long he's
- 11:09Speaker 1: going to be out. I think it's going to be
- 11:11Speaker 1: longer than maybe people think or maybe than it's being
- 11:14Speaker 1: let on. This is a major impact type loss that
- 11:19Speaker 1: affects a national title contender. So I think they won.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Now they won the game in Bloomington on Saturday, so
- 11:27Speaker 1: they survived, and you'd much rather have one loss than
- 11:30Speaker 1: two moving forward. But without saying anything, There's going to
- 11:33Speaker 1: be another loss, I think, that finds them. Despite the fact,
- 11:36Speaker 1: an unbelievable number here with Ohio State, how much they
- 11:40Speaker 1: have to rely on their defense now. You go back
- 11:43Speaker 1: since the start of 2023, 48 straight opponents they have
- 11:49Speaker 1: held below their opponent's scoring average on the year. So
- 11:53Speaker 1: it has been a ridiculously good defense that now is
- 11:56Speaker 1: going to probably have to do even more work to
- 11:59Speaker 1: keep the Buckeyes in national title consideration.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Guys, I did a blame pie here on whose fault
- 12:04Speaker 2: it was for that final play for Indiana. And I
- 12:08Speaker 2: have Josh Hoover at 99% and Nick Marsh at 1%.
- 12:11Speaker 3: I mean, he let him out of bounds. He was
- 12:13Speaker 3: wide open.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Yep. Threw it the only place he couldn't.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Put it on the ball, someone. Did Hoover throw it
- 12:22Speaker 4: the only place he couldn't? I mean, we'd have to
- 12:28Speaker 4: go back and look at when he released the ball, right?
- 12:29Speaker 4: Because that is a pure kind of timing thing.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Sort of fade route.
- 12:35Speaker 4: I feel like when he threw the ball was at
- 12:37Speaker 4: the point when Marsh was making his move.
- 12:41Speaker 5: And so I don't know.
- 12:42Speaker 4: I'd love to see when Hoover released it, was there
- 12:45Speaker 4: as much separation as we think there are in our
- 12:47Speaker 4: heads with the benefit of hindsight? I can't give majority
- 12:51Speaker 4: of blame to Hoover there. I think he dropped it
- 12:53Speaker 4: in the bucket. I think Marsh has got to be
- 12:55Speaker 4: more aware. I think it's a wonderful narrative and version
- 12:59Speaker 4: of Indiana surviving Penn State last year, where Omar Cooper Jr.
- 13:03Speaker 4: barely manages to get his feet inbounds by an inch.
- 13:06Speaker 4: They win that game. Well, it's a game of inches.
- 13:08Speaker 4: This time the inches are not on their side, even
- 13:11Speaker 4: though three inches is a lot. To be painfully clear
- 13:13Speaker 4: about that, it's a lot of wiggle room. Marsh should
- 13:16Speaker 4: have been more aware.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I wonder if that missed field goal, the 32-yard field goal,
- 13:21Speaker 1: all we've talked about is Indiana making every single high
- 13:24Speaker 1: leverage play and every third or fourth down or special
- 13:27Speaker 1: teams play that they've needed the last couple of years
- 13:30Speaker 1: have gone their way. That missed 32-yard field goal, is
- 13:33Speaker 1: that kind of the moment maybe where it all changed?
- 13:35Speaker 1: Because the rest of the game, it felt like every
- 13:38Speaker 1: single play the rest of the game that they needed
- 13:40Speaker 1: didn't go their way.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, that's in there.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Signetti lining up for a 55-yarder as well, not knowing
- 13:47Speaker 4: he didn't have the leg.
- 13:48Speaker 5: They knew they were in a.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Fight, and they were pressing and trying to find points
- 13:53Speaker 4: wherever they could. I think the saying point is well made, Bear.
- 13:58Speaker 4: The only thing is, like, Ohio State's problems existed with saying. So,
- 14:05Speaker 4: because they're just so Jeremiah Smith dependent. And what I
- 14:08Speaker 4: can't figure out is, does that make it easier or
- 14:10Speaker 4: harder on the new quarterback? Because everything in this offense
- 14:13Speaker 4: is just throw the ball to Jeremiah Smith. And in theory,
- 14:16Speaker 4: maybe a younger guy could get in and accomplish that
- 14:19Speaker 4: to an okay level, but only time will tell going forward. Stu,
- 14:24Speaker 4: if I were to pose you the same question, the
- 14:26Speaker 4: upset team that you'd be most worried going forward, where
- 14:29Speaker 4: are you at?
- 14:30Speaker 2: I would say Alabama. They look soft again. I mean,
- 14:32Speaker 2: they have two losses. They can't lose another one. They
- 14:35Speaker 2: have LSU at LSU, I believe, later on. They play Auburn,
- 14:38Speaker 2: who just upset Georgia. I would say I would be
- 14:41Speaker 2: most concerned about Alabama just at the way Tennessee manhandled
- 14:47Speaker 2: that team, was physical with that team, and Alabama appeared soft.
- 14:52Speaker 4: I mean, it's a solid answer. Again, a terrible spot
- 14:56Speaker 4: for Bama going in. But Josh Heupel, like imagine if
- 14:59Speaker 4: Heupel had like a Hendon Hooker type quarterback. And the
- 15:03Speaker 4: deepest of ironies, if he could figure out that position again,
- 15:05Speaker 4: like they are winning with a top five in the
- 15:08Speaker 4: country defense, running the ball really great. Quarterback leaves a
- 15:12Speaker 4: lot to be desired. Speaking of, my answer would be Texas.
- 15:17Speaker 4: And this kind of reinforces the parity point because– I'm
- 15:21Speaker 4: about to kind of bash Texas.
- 15:24Speaker 5: And Texas beat Ohio State.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Yes.
- 15:26Speaker 5: And they won on the road in Neyland.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Yep.
- 15:28Speaker 5: So they beat two of the teams that were glazing.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Yet I'm most worried about Texas because Arch looks broken, guys.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:35Speaker 4: That is a Florida defense that was dead last in
- 15:38Speaker 4: the SEC in terms of pass defense. If there was
- 15:41Speaker 4: ever a get-right game through the air, it was supposed
- 15:44Speaker 4: to be that Florida team. And I think this changed
- 15:47Speaker 4: following maybe the last couple of drives. But about halfway
- 15:51Speaker 4: through that fourth quarter, they put up a graphic. Texas
- 15:54Speaker 4: had negative air yards per attempt. They were throwing the ball.
- 15:58Speaker 4: That means everything was screens, quick hitters, don't make him think,
- 16:03Speaker 4: get the ball out of his hands. It's a sign
- 16:06Speaker 4: of a quarterback that is going into a complete crisis
- 16:08Speaker 4: of confidence. And when you rewatch the game, there are
- 16:11Speaker 4: open receivers that But Arch is sped up. He's panicking.
- 16:14Speaker 4: He's not seeing it. He's holding onto the ball. And
- 16:17Speaker 4: for the second game in a row, he's turned it
- 16:20Speaker 4: over to a very high leverage spot that is undeniably
- 16:22Speaker 4: and unequivocally led to a loss. And I've been a
- 16:25Speaker 4: major Texas and Arch defender. But when you look at
- 16:28Speaker 4: the rest of their schedule, Colin Simmons announced today out
- 16:31Speaker 4: with a high ankle sprain for about a month, potentially.
- 16:35Speaker 5: There's just no way that Texas survives this schedule.
- 16:38Speaker 1: No, there's definitely another loss. coming on their schedule, and
- 16:42Speaker 1: good luck trying to contain Trinidad Chambliss without Simmons. So
- 16:47Speaker 1: on the flip, is there a team out there from
- 16:51Speaker 1: this weekend that maybe a little bit of a hiccup
- 16:55Speaker 1: or whatever else? Which team is just fine, Stugatz?
- 16:59Speaker 2: I would say Notre Dame. Even losing to BYU and
- 17:02Speaker 2: they were robbed. I don't like Notre Dame. I root
- 17:05Speaker 2: for Notre Dame to lose most of the time, but
- 17:07Speaker 2: they were robbed in that game.
- 17:09Speaker 3: They were absolutely robbed.
- 17:11Speaker 2: And so I would say Notre Dame, I know they
- 17:12Speaker 2: have to play Miami still. Miami didn't look as good
- 17:15Speaker 2: as we thought they were against Florida State. Florida State
- 17:17Speaker 2: probably should have won that football game. So I would
- 17:20Speaker 2: say Notre Dame, even while losing to BYU, to me
- 17:23Speaker 2: seems like a team that's good because they could still
- 17:25Speaker 2: lose one more bear. And if they do lose one more,
- 17:27Speaker 2: they're still going to make it to that playoff. So
- 17:29Speaker 2: I would say Notre Dame, bad loss on the road.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Strange things happen in Provo, especially at night. It happened
- 17:35Speaker 2: to Notre Dame, and I think Notre Dame's going to
- 17:37Speaker 2: be fine. And I think the committee, if the committee
- 17:39Speaker 2: is doing their job, They will factor in the referees.
- 17:43Speaker 3: And that call at the end of that game because
- 17:44Speaker 3: it was atrocious.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yes. Oh my God.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Oh my God.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Let's not let the actual football decide who wins football. Rob,
- 17:54Speaker 4: Rob Peter to pay Joseph Smith and the Mormons were due.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 17:59Speaker 5: Get out of here, Rob.
- 18:01Speaker 4: How about, how about you win the game on one
- 18:02Speaker 4: of the 18,000 plays you had before that 10th of
- 18:05Speaker 4: a second, right?
- 18:06Speaker 5: I suppose that was left on the clock. I know.
- 18:10Speaker 4: No, everybody out here trying to carry the Irish football.
- 18:13Speaker 4: Take away what Kalani Satake and BYU did.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Pass interference.
- 18:20Speaker 4: If you're complaining about pass interference, you are what's wrong
- 18:23Speaker 4: with football right now.
- 18:25Speaker 3: So I'm what's wrong with college.
- 18:26Speaker 5: Football right now. You're the throw the flag guy. Alabama
- 18:32Speaker 5: got robbed a couple of weeks ago.
- 18:33Speaker 4: You sat there and cheered when they called holding on
- 18:37Speaker 4: Florida State. You said, yep, absolutely, under the current rules.
- 18:40Speaker 4: You can't rip a down guy like that. That's a
- 18:42Speaker 4: great call. You got to call it.
- 18:44Speaker 1: He had his arm around him, and you saw the
- 18:46Speaker 1: jersey get stretched. It was clearly a hold.
- 18:48Speaker 4: No, the answer's Georgia, though. The answer's Georgia. Because, like,
- 18:52Speaker 4: Georgia's been perfect all year long. Gunnar Stockton's been perfect
- 18:57Speaker 4: all year long. They race out of that 14-0 lead,
- 19:00Speaker 4: and they just got lackadaisical. You know, they think, okay,
- 19:05Speaker 4: we're the best.
- 19:06Speaker 5: We got to say we're good. We're good. And then
- 19:09Speaker 5: you have a couple insane catches.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:12Speaker 4: You know, some untimely turnovers. Like, if I look at
- 19:16Speaker 4: Gunnar Stockton's body of work, the mistakes that led to
- 19:20Speaker 4: that loss. are not representative of who he has been
- 19:25Speaker 4: in a much larger sample size. So I think Georgia,
- 19:28Speaker 4: even in the SEC, even with a tough schedule, I
- 19:31Speaker 4: think Georgia will be fine overcoming this Auburn loss. I
- 19:33Speaker 4: think it teaches them a pretty harsh lesson very directly
- 19:39Speaker 4: going forward.
- 19:39Speaker 1: What about you, Bear? I think you're both right. I
- 19:42Speaker 1: had a hard time deciding between both of those two teams.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I would lean more towards Georgia, I think, as well.
- 19:49Speaker 4: 3-0.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Turnovers. I am not convinced that after getting dinged, I
- 19:55Speaker 1: guess would be the appropriate word for a concussion, where
- 19:58Speaker 1: you don't want to say concussion, early in the game.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I think Stockton did not play that game with a
- 20:02Speaker 1: clear head. I think it showed with the turnovers. I
- 20:07Speaker 1: think Kirby... has now some, some teaching moments to be
- 20:12Speaker 1: able to instill during the, the idle week as well.
- 20:15Speaker 1: So I think it's Georgia circling back to Notre Dame.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I had, you guys brought up the conversation. If they
- 20:23Speaker 1: lose to Miami and they are 10 and two, and
- 20:25Speaker 1: they lose to Miami and you lose to be white
- 20:27Speaker 1: by you, the two best teams you play on your
- 20:29Speaker 1: schedule and you've gotten no great wins. I, There is
- 20:34Speaker 1: going to be a loud conversation from the anti-Notre Dame
- 20:38Speaker 1: crowd like Stugatz that doesn't want them in the playoff
- 20:41Speaker 1: at 10-2 with those two losses. This could be a
- 20:45Speaker 1: very interesting case study to see if the Irish would
- 20:50Speaker 1: remain in that top 12 if they do lose to
- 20:54Speaker 1: Miami and South Bend.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Right.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I think Notre Dame would still get in with two losses, guys,
- 20:59Speaker 2: just because the committee wants Notre Dame. They know Notre
- 21:01Speaker 2: Dame being in. There's money involved. There's exposure involved. It's
- 21:04Speaker 2: good for the college football playoff, whether you like Notre
- 21:07Speaker 2: Dame or not. I do find it interesting because I
- 21:09Speaker 2: was looking at the schedules, what Bear said earlier about
- 21:12Speaker 2: Indiana and Ohio State. Just looking at their schedules moving
- 21:16Speaker 2: forward and knowing that Sayan is out at quarterback, I
- 21:19Speaker 2: would say, Bear, I'm actually with you on this, that
- 21:21Speaker 2: Indiana has a better chance, even though they lost to
- 21:25Speaker 2: Ohio State, they have a better chance of making the
- 21:27Speaker 2: playoff based on the schedule and their quarterbacks healthy than
- 21:31Speaker 2: Ohio State does. I think that's interesting, yes.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Yeah, and their front seven, too, man. I mean, the
- 21:37Speaker 4: element of that game I was most... guilty of disrespecting
- 21:40Speaker 4: was brian haynes and kirk told us kirk told us
- 21:43Speaker 4: when we talked to him to watch out for brian
- 21:46Speaker 4: haynes and what he was going to cook up in
- 21:47Speaker 4: that indiana front seven because he stopped ohio state from
- 21:49Speaker 4: running the ball and it's the only team i've seen
- 21:53Speaker 4: really commit to shutting down jeremiah smith and granted he
- 21:56Speaker 4: still had his moment on fourth and one because he's
- 21:59Speaker 4: jeremiah smith but like taking him away for 99 of
- 22:02Speaker 4: the game and forcing them to try to find answers elsewhere.
- 22:06Speaker 1: And Kirk was also talking to us about BYU and
- 22:11Speaker 1: Notre Dame and what a night for Bachmeier and for Glasgow.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I went down a rabbit hole on Sunday, and it
- 22:20Speaker 1: was a rabbit hole that I did not expect to
- 22:22Speaker 1: go down. But someone who is close-ish to the Notre
- 22:27Speaker 1: Dame program, not like within the walls, not like Joe Phan,
- 22:32Speaker 1: but someone who is pretty familiar with the program, and
- 22:35Speaker 1: they texted me on Sunday saying, And said, oh, well,
- 22:38Speaker 1: another game that– big game that Marcus lost and Notre
- 22:42Speaker 1: Dame lost. And it got going about– they were talking about,
- 22:46Speaker 1: I wonder what the Notre Dame strength of schedule is
- 22:49Speaker 1: since Marcus took over because there really aren't a lot
- 22:52Speaker 1: of big wins. So I was like, okay, now I'm
- 22:54Speaker 1: going to have to go here. And while my pork
- 22:58Speaker 1: roast is in the oven and going and the Jets
- 23:01Speaker 1: are getting backdoor covers by– against the Patriots. Let me
- 23:05Speaker 1: look at this. I went back and looked. This was
- 23:09Speaker 1: not like my idea to do it, so don't hate
- 23:12Speaker 1: me for bringing up facts. If you go back to
- 23:15Speaker 1: the start of last year, Notre Dame's 16 wins have
- 23:20Speaker 1: come against teams that are a combined 32-78 against Power
- 23:26Speaker 1: 4 teams. So you take away the 16 games against
- 23:28Speaker 1: Notre Dame, and it's 32-62, which is still terrible. you
- 23:35Speaker 1: look at, obviously, the playoff run that Notre Dame had. Fantastic.
- 23:41Speaker 1: You beat Indiana at home. You beat Georgia after the
- 23:46Speaker 1: foiled terrorist attack. Yeah. And Kirby's dad dies, and then
- 23:52Speaker 1: you beat Penn State and James Franklin. You go to
- 23:53Speaker 1: the tie game. But assuming BYU does finish the year ranked,
- 23:59Speaker 1: Marcus Freeman will be 5-8 in the regular season. against
- 24:03Speaker 1: teams that wound up finishing the year ranked. And two
- 24:06Speaker 1: of those wins came against service academies. So the point is,
- 24:12Speaker 1: my friend's suspicion, there really weren't a whole lot of
- 24:17Speaker 1: big wins in the regular season, if any, for Marcus
- 24:23Speaker 1: Raymond and Notre Dame. They brought this up because of
- 24:26Speaker 1: the whole, it's what we do, these big games. Yeah,
- 24:30Speaker 1: playoff run was fantastic. Get to the dollar game, great.
- 24:33Speaker 1: But that game against Miami on November 7th, there's going
- 24:35Speaker 1: to be a ton of pressure on the Irish.
- 24:38Speaker 2: But they beat Belichick, and that Carolina win keeps getting
- 24:41Speaker 2: better and better.
- 24:43Speaker 1: By the way, spooky for Miami on Halloween night beneath
- 24:48Speaker 1: the pines there at Kenan. I know Taylor's going to
- 24:52Speaker 1: get dressed up and put his LT jersey on.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Listen, Taylor is all fired up. He loves Belichick again.
- 24:58Speaker 2: He loves the Tar Heels again. I was making the
- 24:59Speaker 2: point just looking at the college football slate for that weekend.
- 25:02Speaker 2: that college game day might be headed there to Chapel
- 25:06Speaker 2: Hill for Miami, North.
- 25:08Speaker 5: Carolina on Halloween.
- 25:09Speaker 3: How about that?
- 25:10Speaker 2: Yes.
- 25:12Speaker 1: They are. What else do we have on?
- 25:14Speaker 3: There you go.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Florida, Georgia. Yes. And is that day. Right.
- 25:19Speaker 6: And then there's USC and Ohio, Ohio state at USC.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I mean, those are two ranked ranks. They're going to
- 25:25Speaker 1: go to Carolina.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Not ranked. Yes.
- 25:27Speaker 1: North Carolina. I mean, they're going to go to Carolina.
- 25:29Speaker 3: There would know. Thank you.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:34Speaker 4: But Mikey, you got to remember if you. If you're
- 25:38Speaker 4: a busty individual, a buxom individual, Halloween is your day.
- 25:43Speaker 1: It is.
- 25:43Speaker 5: It is your time to shine.
- 25:45Speaker 4: If you're ever going to put Bill back on the
- 25:47Speaker 4: big stage, he's got to have him pushed up on display,
- 25:51Speaker 4: cleavage rocking on game day.
- 25:54Speaker 5: Can't wait.
- 25:55Speaker 4: And also in the Notre Dame front pair, we don't
- 25:56Speaker 4: have to worry about any of this because thankfully our
- 25:59Speaker 4: overlords went ahead and wrote it into the rules that
- 26:01Speaker 4: they're going to get in the playoff. Like it's like,
- 26:04Speaker 4: cause everybody else is going to catch more losses as
- 26:05Speaker 4: this year goes on and guaranteed to get in. Yes.
- 26:08Speaker 4: All right.
- 26:08Speaker 5: Let's take a quick break.
- 26:09Speaker 4: When we get back, let's dive into some more of
- 26:11Speaker 4: the games we haven't talked about yet right here on
- 26:13Speaker 4: the college football show with two guts in the bear.
- 26:39Speaker 4: Welcome back to College Football Show with Sue Gotts and
- 26:41Speaker 4: the Bear. Yeah, again, this Saturday, it's overstuffed. There's way
- 26:45Speaker 4: too many stuff to get to. And so a game
- 26:47Speaker 4: between two massive brands that normally would have been a
- 26:49Speaker 4: big deal.
- 26:50Speaker 1: However.
- 26:52Speaker 4: Is so impressive in its mediocrity that I almost watched
- 26:56Speaker 4: in a masochistic fashion fashion uh Penn State Michigan just
- 27:02Speaker 4: an absolute terrible mid-off a hyper boring game but the
- 27:07Speaker 4: news is Bryce Underwood benched Tommy Carr comes in Michigan
- 27:12Speaker 4: scores three second half touchdowns And they're saying Tommy Heisman, Bear,
- 27:18Speaker 4: just ignore the fact that Tommy Carr only threw seven
- 27:21Speaker 4: passes in the second half.
- 27:23Speaker 1: And we've seen this a couple of instances already this year.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Everyone loves the backup quarterback. Backup quarterback gets thrown into
- 27:30Speaker 1: game action, doesn't get a chance to think, doesn't prep
- 27:33Speaker 1: all week, and he's great in that half or second
- 27:36Speaker 1: half or whenever he gets thrown in on the spur
- 27:38Speaker 1: of the moment. But you get a week to kind
- 27:40Speaker 1: of opponent gets a week to break down film on him.
- 27:43Speaker 1: You get a week to prep and be ready as
- 27:46Speaker 1: the starter. Things don't always go the way that they
- 27:50Speaker 1: go when you kind of just impulsively get thrown into
- 27:53Speaker 1: the thick of things. And I am sure that Brian
- 27:56Speaker 1: Haynes and that Indiana defense will have a lot of
- 28:00Speaker 1: things to look at for Tommy Carr and Michigan. I'm curious.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Put it on the poll. Where will Will Arch Manning
- 28:11Speaker 1: and Bryce Underwood be next year? Because clearly, I don't
- 28:15Speaker 1: think it's going to be at either of the two
- 28:16Speaker 1: schools that they're going to be at now.
- 28:18Speaker 2: The B in Bryce Underwood stands for benched. And I
- 28:21Speaker 2: do think I love that question.
- 28:23Speaker 3: I really do.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Because I want to give you guys three options quickly
- 28:25Speaker 2: on Arch, and we'll get back to this. Arch Manning
- 28:27Speaker 2: next year. Drafted in the first round. Stays at Texas.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Transfers to another school. What are you going with?
- 28:37Speaker 5: Transfers to another school.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Really?
- 28:40Speaker 1: Yes.
- 28:42Speaker 4: I was leaning stay at Texas, but then you saw
- 28:45Speaker 4: news today and they're, they're making a point of this,
- 28:48Speaker 4: that they're giving the backup quarterback or one rep.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Yes.
- 28:52Speaker 5: So it feels like it may.
- 28:55Speaker 4: And, and now Sark's starting to get shit on because
- 28:58Speaker 4: rightfully so we're all asking, well, why aren't these guys
- 29:00Speaker 4: developing under you? So, yeah, I, I think Arch's future
- 29:04Speaker 4: probably lies elsewhere.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I wonder if, we, we, we all know that if
- 29:11Speaker 1: he does declare for the draft, he's going to get
- 29:14Speaker 1: taken in the first round. Right.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Do we?
- 29:16Speaker 5: So, so he still will.
- 29:17Speaker 4: I mean, I, I'm a believer long-term in him bear, but,
- 29:21Speaker 4: but you, you use, is that still what they're saying
- 29:24Speaker 4: in like draft expert circles?
- 29:25Speaker 1: I think, I think, well, doesn't the NFL, like they
- 29:29Speaker 1: draft on traits and such.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:31Speaker 1: He's still, he's still gonna check all those boxes. Like
- 29:36Speaker 1: I think he, I think if he, Why not?– I
- 29:41Speaker 1: don't know what Tulane has on their quarterback depth chart
- 29:43Speaker 1: right now. Go home. Go to New Orleans. Go play
- 29:45Speaker 1: for Tulane. Hometown, you'll be a hero. There'll be much
- 29:50Speaker 1: less pressure on you. You'll be around familiar locale where
- 29:54Speaker 1: you grew up. Go put up good numbers at Tulane,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and then you know what? go on from there, kind
- 29:58Speaker 1: of feel good about yourself.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:01Speaker 5: He, he, he should actually, you're right. I don't hate
- 30:03Speaker 5: that idea.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Only maybe a different school in Louisiana go to LSU.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Well, how about Tennessee? How about Mississippi? How about any
- 30:09Speaker 2: of those schools? I mean, I mean, I got to
- 30:13Speaker 2: be honest with you. A Manning is not going to
- 30:15Speaker 2: be caught dead at Tulane university.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Okay. It just, it's not happening. Okay.
- 30:20Speaker 2: He's not going to play there, and if he did
- 30:22Speaker 2: play there, the family would not go and support him.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Do we think he could play at Tennessee or LSU?
- 30:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I do.
- 30:35Speaker 4: I definitely do. I think you mentioned traits, Bear. And
- 30:40Speaker 4: if the NFL is willing to take shots at a
- 30:42Speaker 4: trait off its mind, like Lane Kiffin, he's definitely.
- 30:44Speaker 5: Going to think I could make the, you know, I could,
- 30:46Speaker 5: I could get this guy.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Yes.
- 30:48Speaker 4: And I think Hypo would probably think the same thing.
- 30:51Speaker 4: And critically an advantage over the high school quarterback is
- 30:56Speaker 4: he has experience like for whatever it's worth. Arch has
- 30:59Speaker 4: been in every single fire that you can be in
- 31:02Speaker 4: operated under the most pressure. So he should be calloused
- 31:06Speaker 4: to the stage quite a bit. How about the, you,
- 31:09Speaker 4: I got to, I can't see that. Yeah, well, I mean,
- 31:13Speaker 4: you can if you really want to see it, Bear.
- 31:17Speaker 4: I think you've got to play better for the U
- 31:19Speaker 4: to want to give you $ 6 million to.
- 31:20Speaker 5: Be the quarterback for a year.
- 31:22Speaker 4: Like, he's not good enough for the U right now.
- 31:25Speaker 3: But we still have him going in the first round
- 31:26Speaker 3: of the draft. It's crazy.
- 31:29Speaker 1: There are a lot of terrible quarterbacks that have gone
- 31:31Speaker 1: in the first round of the draft. I'm aware. I know.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Right, who don't have the last name Manning. Yes, correct.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Yeah. Fourth overall.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Yes. Speaking of that, and speaking of that and speaking
- 31:45Speaker 1: of the U, and I know this is a college show,
- 31:47Speaker 1: but is Cam Ward kind of getting, eking into that
- 31:51Speaker 1: Jamarcus Russell territory?
- 31:53Speaker 3: He's getting there.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Yep.
- 31:54Speaker 3: He lives on the corner of 3rd and Long. Yep.
- 32:00Speaker 1: And it pains me to say.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:02Speaker 4: We were talking about Mannings, and then we mentioned Tommy Carr.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Maybe this is a poll question, Stu. Underrated seed, Lloyd Carr.
- 32:13Speaker 4: Because I've always harbored a dream of studying Archie Manning.
- 32:17Speaker 5: Yes.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Because I can't imagine the price that you could charge
- 32:21Speaker 4: for that sperm.
- 32:22Speaker 5: But, like, look at Lloyd.
- 32:24Speaker 4: He's got CJ over there at Notre Dame kicking ass.
- 32:26Speaker 4: Now Tommy's leading Michigan. Old man Lloyd's got something in him, too, dude.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Just think about it.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Soul food for thought.
- 32:32Speaker 3: I will, but just to be clear.
- 32:33Speaker 5: What was the poll question? Oh, underrated seed, yes or no.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Lloyd Carr.
- 32:39Speaker 5: Lloyd Carr, underrated seed, yes or.
- 32:45Speaker 1: No.
- 32:45Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:47Speaker 1: You can go to the sperm bank and just freeze it,
- 32:50Speaker 1: and they can go there and be like, oh, yeah,
- 32:51Speaker 1: I want... I like some Lloyd Carr, please. Yes.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Just going back to Michigan-Penn State for a second here.
- 32:58Speaker 2: I am telling you, if that game, if they played
- 32:59Speaker 2: it in black and white, I could have been convinced
- 33:02Speaker 2: it's the first time those two teams have played each other.
- 33:05Speaker 2: And all I thought about, T-Bob is cracking up there.
- 33:08Speaker 2: All I thought about during that game, Utah 6-0. Like
- 33:12Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham, what are you doing? What are you thinking?
- 33:15Speaker 2: Why leave easy for difficult when you had it easy
- 33:18Speaker 2: at Utah?
- 33:19Speaker 5: They're 6-0.
- 33:20Speaker 2: He'd be the toast of the town again, and now
- 33:22Speaker 2: he's getting crushed at Michigan. I know they win the game,
- 33:25Speaker 2: but that was a terrible win, and they've been dreadful
- 33:28Speaker 2: all season.
- 33:29Speaker 4: And well, the only thing that we got to remember though, is,
- 33:31Speaker 4: is Utah forced him out. Morgan Scali, the defensive coordinator,
- 33:35Speaker 4: he's been the coach in waiting.
- 33:37Speaker 5: For a long time.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:39Speaker 4: And, and you, you know, familiarity breeds contempt.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Yes.
- 33:43Speaker 4: And Utah had decided that it was time for change.
- 33:46Speaker 4: And so Whittingham kind of ends up at Michigan and
- 33:50Speaker 4: we all laud it, but yeah, I guess there was
- 33:52Speaker 4: a reason. Well, they wanted him out there in the
- 33:54Speaker 4: first place. And remember, Beck's the highest paid office coordinator
- 33:57Speaker 4: in the country.
- 33:57Speaker 3: Well, the reason is they can go 6-0 with any
- 33:59Speaker 3: coach at Utah. I guess that's the reason, right?
- 34:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 34:02Speaker 5: By the way.
- 34:02Speaker 1: That was a tricky game, by the way, on Saturday night.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Colorado came back and made that a game. Yes. That
- 34:09Speaker 1: was very surprising. Why not? That's a really.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Of all the surprising things, that's the thing that got you, huh, Colorado?
- 34:15Speaker 1: Yeah, that was it. Lay in there after feeling nothing
- 34:18Speaker 1: after Miami's overtime win against Florida State. Feeling nothing watching
- 34:25Speaker 1: the boss come out in the second half and make
- 34:26Speaker 1: that a game. That was my... biggest takeaway from Saturday night. No, no.
- 34:30Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not going to lie. Once that BYU
- 34:32Speaker 4: Notre Dame game ended and Miami, Florida state, I had
- 34:35Speaker 4: to have a little late night sick.
- 34:36Speaker 5: Like I was done.
- 34:37Speaker 4: I was exhausted. I couldn't handle anymore. And then I
- 34:40Speaker 4: wake up to learn that in classic Nebraska fashion. They
- 34:44Speaker 4: just had their nuts stumped all over once again. I mean, Nebraska.
- 34:49Speaker 5: Nebraska.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Oregon.
- 34:50Speaker 4: Dylan Raiola, who got benched, was absolutely terrible, comes off
- 34:53Speaker 4: the bench to beat his old team just because it's
- 34:56Speaker 4: Nebraska and they cannot have anything nice in life. You
- 35:00Speaker 4: know a team that looks like they may have something
- 35:03Speaker 4: pretty nice?
- 35:04Speaker 5: That's Ole Miss.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Yes. They got something nice.
- 35:06Speaker 4: It was a big-time matchup this weekend. They win 31-3.
- 35:10Speaker 4: But as much as we talk about offense with Ole Miss–
- 35:13Speaker 4: The scary thing here is Will Echols and that Ole
- 35:17Speaker 4: Miss front seven. Like, if Ole Miss has a defense bear,
- 35:22Speaker 4: do they become championship good?
- 35:26Speaker 1: Fringe, I think. I mean, I think, again, with health,
- 35:29Speaker 1: with like Lacey, can Lacey stay healthy throughout the course
- 35:32Speaker 1: of the year? We saw last year they were very,
- 35:34Speaker 1: very close to getting there. I wonder, again, like that
- 35:38Speaker 1: seemed like a pretty good spot for Ole Miss getting
- 35:43Speaker 1: Missouri off of those wins and kind of talk of
- 35:46Speaker 1: the town, getting ranked just how they did. Now you're
- 35:49Speaker 1: going on the road. Missouri took a ton of money
- 35:52Speaker 1: last week, and Ole Miss just kind of came out
- 35:54Speaker 1: and kind of showed Austin Simmons. I think that was
- 35:58Speaker 1: one of those spots where they wanted to have their
- 36:01Speaker 1: guys back and make Austin Simmons look bad. So we'll
- 36:06Speaker 1: see if they can– look, I don't know what the
- 36:08Speaker 1: hell is going to happen in Austin this week, because
- 36:11Speaker 1: I sure as hell couldn't bet on Texas. They look
- 36:13Speaker 1: completely broken, but Texas is a slight favorite. We've seen
- 36:17Speaker 1: every Texas game involving a power for a team so
- 36:20Speaker 1: far this year, it's been decided by a field goal
- 36:22Speaker 1: or fewer. So it would not be a shock if
- 36:25Speaker 1: Ole Miss went in there and won.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:28Speaker 4: I mean, no Colin Simmons going into that game and
- 36:30Speaker 4: you got to shut down, like you said, uh, Kiwan Lacey, uh,
- 36:35Speaker 4: Trinidad Chambliss.
- 36:36Speaker 5: I always get the Robinson confused. It doesn't matter.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Ole Miss, if they have a defense, potentially very good.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Also potentially very good, the Kentucky Wildcats. They go on
- 36:46Speaker 4: the road to Norman. They win 21-13. They are now
- 36:49Speaker 4: tied atop the SEC standings with Georgia. Kentucky continues to
- 36:54Speaker 4: come through, Stu.
- 36:55Speaker 5: Big Blue.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Yes, the defense surprised me. But just going back to
- 36:59Speaker 2: what you guys were talking about, with the SEC. Florida
- 37:02Speaker 2: blew out Ole Miss. Missouri blew out Florida. Ole Miss
- 37:06Speaker 2: blew out Missouri. I have no idea what the hell
- 37:08Speaker 2: is going on. I don't know what's real and what's
- 37:10Speaker 2: not in college football. This is the craziest season. Let
- 37:14Speaker 2: me just say that again. Florida blew out Ole Miss.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Missouri blew out Florida. Ole Miss blew out Missouri.
- 37:24Speaker 3: What the hell?
- 37:27Speaker 1: We're getting major 1990, major 2007 vibes.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Nothing's real.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Again, it's kind of in keeping with a lot of
- 37:37Speaker 4: themes that we constantly talk about with this sport. There
- 37:39Speaker 4: has been a flattening of talent. And it's leading to
- 37:44Speaker 4: more and more unexpected results, which Maybe in the future
- 37:48Speaker 4: it could be kind of exciting in a tournament-type setting.
- 37:51Speaker 5: Not for all the time. We'll tell, won't it, boys?
- 37:55Speaker 4: All right, coming up next, let's close out the show
- 37:57Speaker 4: with a final couple of games here on the College
- 37:59Speaker 4: Football Show with Sue Gotts and the Bear. All right,
- 38:21Speaker 4: welcome back to the College Football Show with Sue Gatz
- 38:23Speaker 4: and the Bear. So we talk a lot of Power 4.
- 38:26Speaker 4: We talk a lot about the Big 2. And just
- 38:30Speaker 4: like we all knew it would be, halfway through the season,
- 38:33Speaker 4: you look at the SEC, you look at the Big 10,
- 38:35Speaker 4: there is one lone undefeated team remaining, and it's Bob
- 38:40Speaker 4: Chesney and the UCLA Bruins.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:43Speaker 4: How about it? Not only are they undefeated, guys, but
- 38:46Speaker 4: this is where it gets crazy to me. It's the
- 38:48Speaker 4: manner in which they are.
- 38:49Speaker 5: I understand... If you're a Cignetti.
- 38:51Speaker 4: You're a quarterback whisperer, you come in, you get that
- 38:53Speaker 4: position to play well, you can win games immediately. Bob
- 38:56Speaker 4: Chesney is winning the games with defense and running the ball.
- 39:00Speaker 4: Those should be expensive. Those are like culture-based traits that
- 39:06Speaker 4: should take years to build up there, and yet here
- 39:09Speaker 4: in year number one, Chesney has a team that was
- 39:11Speaker 4: god-awful that is now a minus-odds favorite to make the
- 39:16Speaker 4: college football playoff.
- 39:18Speaker 1: It doesn't feel real. I know it sounds terrible to say,
- 39:23Speaker 1: but Wisconsin was so bad on offense. Oregon isn't what
- 39:29Speaker 1: we thought they were. I wish I were more positive
- 39:34Speaker 1: and more optimistic moving forward.
- 39:37Speaker 3: It seems like you're in pain.
- 39:40Speaker 1: I am in pain. They are a perfect example of
- 39:47Speaker 1: these conferences being so big where you get the benefit.
- 39:52Speaker 1: This is like Indiana in 2024. Didn't play anybody good
- 39:58Speaker 1: other than Ohio State. They got embarrassed in the regular season,
- 40:01Speaker 1: made the playoff at 11-1, and then got not competitive
- 40:06Speaker 1: at Notre Dame. It's kind of the same thing. Oregon
- 40:09Speaker 1: was supposed to be good, but they weren't on that day.
- 40:14Speaker 1: and with the injuries that they had and they go
- 40:16Speaker 1: to the rain to the schedule, like they got to see,
- 40:18Speaker 1: they could still lose to anybody. Like, like they got
- 40:20Speaker 1: to go. I think that Minnesota may be on the
- 40:22Speaker 1: road is a game that they potentially could lose. Like
- 40:24Speaker 1: they could still lose to anyone because there's such a
- 40:27Speaker 1: slim margin for error with, with that philosophy, with that
- 40:33Speaker 1: roadmap of run the ball with night special teams, field position,
- 40:39Speaker 1: inexperienced type quarterback, like, It's a great story, and he
- 40:43Speaker 1: is clearly Coach of the Year right now for what
- 40:46Speaker 1: he's been able to do at UCLA. I mean, I
- 40:48Speaker 1: shouldn't say clearly. I think you can make a good
- 40:50Speaker 1: case for Sataki. You can make a good case for
- 40:52Speaker 1: Will Stein. But good job by him, and I'm sure
- 40:57Speaker 1: there are a lot of people in State College, Pennsylvania
- 41:00Speaker 1: right now wishing that he were their head coach as
- 41:02Speaker 1: opposed to Matt Campbell.
- 41:04Speaker 2: I hear you questioning Bob Chesney. I'm telling you right now, Bear,
- 41:07Speaker 2: the only question about Bob Chesney is where they're going
- 41:09Speaker 2: to place the statue.
- 41:10Speaker 3: I mean, seriously.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Right next to Wooden.
- 41:13Speaker 4: I thought Stu was going to say the only question
- 41:16Speaker 4: about Bob Chesney is where he's going to coach next.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Because when you want to talk about a primetime poach candidate,
- 41:22Speaker 4: every single desperate traditional power in the country is going
- 41:27Speaker 4: to make him say no to the Brinks truck.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Yep.
- 41:30Speaker 1: What happens, going back to what we were talking about before,
- 41:34Speaker 1: if shit doesn't get turned around in Texas and it
- 41:36Speaker 1: continues to go sideways? Like, if you're Bob Chesney... Like,
- 41:41Speaker 1: do you really want to go to Texas? Yes. You
- 41:45Speaker 1: got no pressure at all at UCLA.
- 41:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 41:49Speaker 1: You could just hold them hostage for whatever. You make
- 41:52Speaker 1: the college football playoff this year. Maybe you're a Big
- 41:55Speaker 1: Ten championship game champs for eternity after this year. Is
- 42:00Speaker 1: it worth it? Going to Texas and dealing with all
- 42:06Speaker 1: of that, or maybe Texas, maybe they call up Will Stein,
- 42:12Speaker 1: the young, brash, big ball play caller. Maybe you bring
- 42:17Speaker 1: him in. Those potentially could be a couple of guys.
- 42:20Speaker 1: But if I'm Chesney, man, you just said build the statue.
- 42:24Speaker 1: He's a made man at UCLA with no pressure forever.
- 42:29Speaker 1: if they meet the college football playoff this year.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Listen, as a guy who just said Kyle Whittingham should
- 42:33Speaker 2: have stayed in Utah and not gone to Michigan because
- 42:35Speaker 2: of the pressure, I am telling you right now, you
- 42:37Speaker 2: go to Texas.
- 42:41Speaker 3: You're Bob Chesney.
- 42:43Speaker 5: You're young.
- 42:44Speaker 2: You're handsome. You're trying to grow. You're trying to step
- 42:47Speaker 2: up that ladder. Kyle Whittingham was at the end of
- 42:49Speaker 2: his career and is at the end of his career.
- 42:52Speaker 3: This is different for Chesney. He's just getting started.
- 42:55Speaker 2: If Texas is available and they want Chesney, Chesney's going
- 42:58Speaker 2: to Texas.
- 42:58Speaker 3: I'm telling you that right now.
- 43:01Speaker 4: It's hard to say no. I mean, the uniforms look
- 43:04Speaker 4: so good. To be honest, the all-white suit, the burnt orange.
- 43:11Speaker 4: Terribly good-looking fan base, too, as much as I hate
- 43:14Speaker 4: to admit it because I hate Texas and always will.
- 43:16Speaker 5: But sheesh, the Cotton Bowl sights and sounds.
- 43:19Speaker 3: I'm pretty certain UCLA has the same. I'm just saying, yes.
- 43:23Speaker 4: Yes.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Very, very underrated. Yes. Yes.
- 43:27Speaker 5: I want to know. I don't see anybody in the stadium.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Well, maybe not the stadium, but the song girls get
- 43:34Speaker 1: a lot of pipe and publicity and rightly so. UCLA.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Ain't taking a backseat to anybody in that standpoint to you, Bob.
- 43:45Speaker 5: Okay.
- 43:45Speaker 4: You're educating me here, Bear. I don't think I was
- 43:47Speaker 4: aware of UCLA. Maybe he should stay.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 43:51Speaker 5: Chesney, he's a made man.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:53Speaker 4: As we wrap up here, boys, I want to wrap
- 43:57Speaker 4: all the way back around because I don't think I've
- 43:59Speaker 4: given credit to the people that I want to give
- 44:01Speaker 4: credit most to, and that's Kalani Satake and this BYU team. Okay,
- 44:05Speaker 4: because when we talked– to Kirk about this game. The
- 44:09Speaker 4: main question I had was how big is the talent
- 44:12Speaker 4: gap actually, right? And it was a great answer. And yes,
- 44:17Speaker 4: on paper, it appears large and like, yes, this Notre
- 44:21Speaker 4: Dame roster will have more guys drafted and the BYU will,
- 44:24Speaker 4: though they have NFL players too.
- 44:26Speaker 5: But what I saw Saturday was not fluky.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Like if you look at the pressure, like the entire
- 44:33Speaker 4: defensive game plan around BYU was predicated on them being
- 44:38Speaker 4: able to play man. So they could add guys to
- 44:41Speaker 4: the rush. They could get aggressive. They could mix up coverages,
- 44:43Speaker 4: give them different looks. They could fire down a run
- 44:46Speaker 4: support to stop explosive runs. And if you want to
- 44:49Speaker 4: talk about the single biggest skill check on a football.
- 44:52Speaker 5: Field, Can you play man, and can you hang in
- 44:55Speaker 5: the trenches?
- 44:56Speaker 4: And BYU passed both of those tests with flying colors.
- 45:01Speaker 5: So let's be clear.
- 45:02Speaker 4: This is a legitimate BYU team. You're going to bitch
- 45:04Speaker 4: about them being number one, two, whatever. Like, oh, my God,
- 45:06Speaker 4: why are they that? Because they've won. That's how the
- 45:09Speaker 4: AP poll works, okay? It's not a power rating system.
- 45:13Speaker 4: But the bottom line is BYU belongs. And they earned
- 45:17Speaker 4: that win and shout out coach Satake for basically saying,
- 45:20Speaker 4: this is the biggest games we've had in years here.
- 45:22Speaker 5: I'm going to let it all hang out.
- 45:24Speaker 4: And he did that and he got the win and
- 45:27Speaker 4: it was pure college football magic.
- 45:29Speaker 1: That is the best thing that I could say about
- 45:34Speaker 1: Kalani Satake is you're going into the game where we're
- 45:39Speaker 1: fake punt going for it. All of that didn't, didn't
- 45:42Speaker 1: play tight, played loose. Like, And the players fed off
- 45:48Speaker 1: of that, off of that confidence. And it was great.
- 45:51Speaker 1: It was an unbelievable night. I did not think they
- 45:54Speaker 1: had the offensive ability in them and they did. Uh,
- 45:57Speaker 1: Glasgow is really good. I want to know maybe, maybe
- 46:01Speaker 1: at some point we can get bear Bachmeier on and
- 46:03Speaker 1: ask him, well, what, uh, what did Notre Dame do
- 46:06Speaker 1: to disrespect him so much? Did they not like die
- 46:10Speaker 1: naked with him and his family on the, uh, recruiting?
- 46:12Speaker 1: Was that what it was? The, The sight of clothing
- 46:15Speaker 1: at dinner? Was that the issue?
- 46:18Speaker 4: You know, they wore pants.
- 46:19Speaker 3: Can't wear pants.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Who wouldn't sign up for Marcus Freeman being naked at
- 46:22Speaker 2: your dinner table?
- 46:22Speaker 3: I mean, true.
- 46:25Speaker 4: In all honesty, Bear, I did hear that they had
- 46:29Speaker 4: offered him, and then they pulled his scholarship for either, like,
- 46:33Speaker 4: Minchie or Carr. I can't remember what the timing was,
- 46:36Speaker 4: but basically they said, thanks. They pulled the cow herd. Bear,
- 46:41Speaker 4: we're good. we have car or we have Minchie.
- 46:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:45Speaker 2: BYU seems to me, correct me if I'm wrong guys,
- 46:48Speaker 2: just based on the schedule moving forward, they got their
- 46:50Speaker 2: big win. They can afford a loss here. They have
- 46:53Speaker 2: two road games remaining on their schedule.
- 46:55Speaker 3: One is at Utah.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Even if they lose that game, it seems to me
- 46:58Speaker 2: like BYU has the clearest.
- 47:00Speaker 3: Path right now to the college football playoff. Like they're
- 47:02Speaker 3: almost a lock, right?
- 47:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:04Speaker 1: So, well, I wouldn't say lock just because you never
- 47:08Speaker 1: know what's going to happen. Like, The game at Utah
- 47:12Speaker 1: could be tough. We talked about that SEC circle of
- 47:16Speaker 1: death in all those games. They go to UCF this week,
- 47:19Speaker 1: and they are a six-and-a-half-point favorite. So it is clearly
- 47:23Speaker 1: known that that is a trap game, that is a
- 47:26Speaker 1: tough spot, and you've got to be able to handle
- 47:29Speaker 1: adversity and handle everybody patting you on the back now
- 47:32Speaker 1: that you're number two. But if they were to win
- 47:35Speaker 1: this week, I will say yes, that they are a,
- 47:39Speaker 1: a college football playoff lock. You win this week, you
- 47:42Speaker 1: lose to Utah. There's maybe no guarantee you're in the
- 47:45Speaker 1: big patrol championship game, but I think more, more likely
- 47:49Speaker 1: than not guys, the discussion as to, will the big
- 47:53Speaker 1: 12 get three teams in the playoff now? Cause we were,
- 47:56Speaker 1: I was talking last week about not had a marquee
- 47:59Speaker 1: win like last 15 years. The current membership was like
- 48:02Speaker 1: six and 20 against non-conference top 10 teams. And since 2024,
- 48:07Speaker 1: it was one in five and they went out and
- 48:09Speaker 1: they got the win. And now you've got Utah undefeated,
- 48:12Speaker 1: Texas Tech undefeated, BYU undefeated. Houston could still make a
- 48:16Speaker 1: run with one loss to the Big 12 championship game.
- 48:20Speaker 1: There's a really good chance that the Big 12 is
- 48:23Speaker 1: not only looking at two teams, but three teams in
- 48:24Speaker 1: the playoff. That's how big that game was for not
- 48:27Speaker 1: only BYU, but the conference as a whole on Saturday.
- 48:29Speaker 4: Well, and I think unfortunately for BYU, Stu, too, is
- 48:33Speaker 4: like last year, they were one of the few teams
- 48:35Speaker 4: that we've seen in this era where, They got dinged
- 48:39Speaker 4: for playing in a conference championship.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Right. Yes.
- 48:41Speaker 4: We're like, they, they, they lost that second matchup to
- 48:44Speaker 4: Texas tech. They didn't have the signature win. And so
- 48:46Speaker 4: we all said, okay, BYU, yes, you went 11 and one,
- 48:48Speaker 4: but you're not good enough.
- 48:50Speaker 5: To be in here.
- 48:52Speaker 4: And so I think the Notre Dame win probably changes
- 48:55Speaker 4: that calculus, but I don't know that it's a guarantee necessarily.
- 48:59Speaker 4: But Bear's absolutely right. Going to UCF this weekend, that's
- 49:01Speaker 4: a test because one of the themes of this college
- 49:04Speaker 4: football season has been the letdown spot. Yes. You mentioned
- 49:08Speaker 4: that circle of parody or mediocrity, whatever you want to
- 49:10Speaker 4: call it. A lot of those games are tied into
- 49:13Speaker 4: the situation of the season and the context of the schedule.
- 49:18Speaker 4: And so if BYU could pass this, test then credit
- 49:21Speaker 4: to Satake and company for being able to lock in
- 49:23Speaker 4: and they'll probably look like a team that can finish
- 49:25Speaker 4: the fight especially if you got Bear back there the
- 49:29Speaker 4: the he pulled the Taysom Hill triple boys Threw one,
- 49:33Speaker 4: ran for two, caught another. Only Mormons can do it.
- 49:36Speaker 4: Bear following in those lauded footsteps.
- 49:40Speaker 1: The BYU unis are so classic. It's a great blue,
- 49:44Speaker 1: just a simple logo. The field, that Y is just
- 49:48Speaker 1: like 30-yard line to 30-yard line. It's amazing. I wanted
- 49:52Speaker 1: to ask you one thing, and I know we're kind
- 49:55Speaker 1: of spinning it ahead now. I love LSU and Auburn.
- 50:00Speaker 1: because you never know what the hell is going to happen.
- 50:04Speaker 1: Is a barn going to catch on fire? Is an
- 50:06Speaker 1: earthquake going to happen? Is Les Miles going to forget
- 50:09Speaker 1: about how much time is left and eat grass on
- 50:11Speaker 1: the sideline? I want T Bob's favorite memory from his
- 50:15Speaker 1: time within the LSU Auburn rivalry.
- 50:19Speaker 4: It's, I mean, dude, there's, there's been so many, both
- 50:21Speaker 4: as a fan, as a player, as a player, freshman year.
- 50:24Speaker 5: Oh, seven.
- 50:25Speaker 4: That's the Demetrius Bird. Coach Miles calls a fade shot
- 50:30Speaker 4: with like four seconds left in the game. I think
- 50:33Speaker 4: Bird catches it maybe with one in the back of
- 50:35Speaker 4: the end zone. An absolutely insane call, but.
- 50:38Speaker 1: We needed a field goal to tie it.
- 50:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I remember getting on the television broadcast because I
- 50:43Speaker 4: made sure to find Glenn Dorsey and give him a
- 50:45Speaker 4: hug after the game. But my actual favorite memory is
- 50:50Speaker 4: a small one that means nothing to anybody, but I
- 50:53Speaker 4: had a 13-yard kick return in Jordan Hare. They were
- 50:56Speaker 4: terrified of Trendon Holiday. They tried to squib it. They
- 51:00Speaker 4: tried to, yeah, well, they should have been scared of
- 51:02Speaker 4: T-Bob Holiday because they weren't ready. I got us 13 yards.
- 51:06Speaker 4: That's a first down and a half nearly, Bear. We
- 51:09Speaker 4: didn't score on the drive, but I put us in
- 51:11Speaker 4: position to. It was the only time I ever touched
- 51:14Speaker 4: the ball.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Beautiful. Good job.
- 51:18Speaker 4: No, but to your point, it's a rivalry that goes very,
- 51:21Speaker 4: very wonky. And it has some incredibly unexpected results.
- 51:26Speaker 3: And, well, who knows?
- 51:28Speaker 4: We might be primed to see it again. I don't
- 51:31Speaker 4: know what to make of LSU this year. I feel
- 51:33Speaker 4: pretty bullish. But I don't know that they can do
- 51:36Speaker 4: the tightrope for the rest of the season. But I
- 51:38Speaker 4: do think they have a couple of punches left in them,
- 51:41Speaker 4: either for Texas or Alabama.
- 51:43Speaker 3: No need to worry. You have a 2014 playoff coming up,
- 51:46Speaker 3: so you'll be fine.
- 51:48Speaker 4: Yeah, imagine that, letting the actual football decide who should advance.
- 51:53Speaker 4: Crazy concept, right?
- 51:56Speaker 3: Exactly. I'm just saying you won't have to worry about
- 51:58Speaker 3: this stuff moving forward. You just won't.
- 52:00Speaker 2: And that's what stinks about it, a 2014 playoff, is
- 52:03Speaker 2: that you won't have to worry.
- 52:05Speaker 4: You mentioned, I mean, I do agree with, like, I
- 52:08Speaker 4: don't disagree with you because I always describe my favorite
- 52:09Speaker 4: feeling in all of college football is like quantum terror
- 52:12Speaker 4: before the game.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Right.
- 52:14Speaker 4: Where you're like, in four hours, am I going to
- 52:17Speaker 4: be ready to end it all or am I just
- 52:19Speaker 4: going to be hammered, shit-talking everybody, firing off tweets and
- 52:23Speaker 4: videos and, yeah, I'll miss that.
- 52:28Speaker 5: But I think it'll still exist in some way.
- 52:30Speaker 1: So I think we'll see. We'll see.
- 52:31Speaker 5: Only time will tell.
- 52:32Speaker 3: I'm just going to poke you. I'm just going to
- 52:34Speaker 3: keep poking you.
- 52:36Speaker 1: You know what?
- 52:36Speaker 4: You can poke the bear, which will also, or is
- 52:40Speaker 4: that a, am I getting my segments confused?
- 52:41Speaker 5: Is that what we do on my show?
- 52:44Speaker 2: He's on so many different shows, so many different platforms.
- 52:48Speaker 1: He is merging shows.
- 52:53Speaker 5: All right, two bears, one stew. That's another great episode
- 52:56Speaker 5: in the books, guys. College Football Show and Stew Got
- 52:59Speaker 5: to the Bear. Thank you so much.
- 53:01Speaker 4: And we'll be back to preview the weekend that will
- 53:04Speaker 4: be next episode.
- 53:05Speaker 5: Like, subscribe, share with your friends. We love you guys.
- 53:08Speaker 1: We'll be back.
