- 0:04Good morning. This is the Sacramento Brief, your
- 0:08weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:11ahead across the city. I'm Carol. It's Tuesday,
- 0:15July 28th, 2026. Let's get you caught up. The
- 0:19Sacramento County Sheriff's Office is warning
- 0:21residents about an increase in jewelry distracted.
- 0:24thefts across Sacramento County and neighboring
- 0:26communities. According to the Sheriff's Office,
- 0:29suspects often appear friendly and use conversation,
- 0:33fake gifts, hugs, blessings, or requests for
- 0:36help to distract victims while secretly stealing
- 0:39valuable jewelry. In some cases, thieves replace
- 0:42the genuine jewelry with fake pieces, and some
- 0:45incidents have involved force. The majority of
- 0:49the victims have been adults between ages 50
- 0:52and 70 years old, particularly within the Asian
- 0:55community, although both men and women have been
- 0:58targeted. Recent thefts have been reported near
- 1:01high -traffic shopping locations including Costco,
- 1:05Sam's Club, Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot, 99 Ranch
- 1:09Market, SF Market, and other busy retail centers.
- 1:14Investigators also say there have been cases
- 1:16where suspects followed the victim's home before
- 1:19committing the theft. The Sacramento Sheriff's
- 1:22Office recommends leave expensive jewelry at
- 1:24home or keep it covered. Never allow a stranger
- 1:26to place jewelry, scarves, or gifts around your
- 1:29neck. Be cautious of unsolicited hugs, blessings,
- 1:34or unnecessary physical contact. Stay alert in
- 1:38parking lots and shopping centers. If something
- 1:42doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and
- 1:44leave the area. If you witness suspicious activity
- 1:47or become a victim, contact law enforcement immediately.
- 1:51And if fake jewelry is left behind, preserve
- 1:53it as evidence and try to remember as much detail
- 1:58you can about the suspect, the vehicle, and descriptions.
