Latest / Earn Your Leisure / Scholars Corner: America's credit rating gets downgraded, what it means for investors
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 0:03Speaker 1: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from Al Salvador
- 0:07Speaker 1: accused of murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan charged with
- 0:11Speaker 1: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 0:15Speaker 1: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 0:19Speaker 1: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy nom the United States
- 0:23Speaker 1: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border
- 0:28Speaker 1: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over
- 0:31Speaker 1: one hundred thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you
- 0:35Speaker 1: are here illegally, your next you will be fined nearly
- 0:39Speaker 1: one thousand dollars a day, imprisoned, and deported. You will
- 0:43Speaker 1: never return. But if you register using our CBP home
- 0:46Speaker 1: app and leave now, you could be allowed to return legally.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Do what's right. Leave now. Under President Trump, America's laws,
- 0:55Speaker 1: border and families will be protected.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Sponsored by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
- 1:00Speaker 3: What were your five biggest takeaways from the decision of
- 1:04Speaker 3: rating agency Fitch to downgrade US debt from the highest
- 1:10Speaker 3: rating of triple A to double A plus and does
- 1:14Speaker 3: this cause you to be concerned as an investor.
- 1:18Speaker 4: It was interesting to see this come out twelve years ago.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I remember when the S and P Global downgraded the
- 1:25Speaker 4: United States. Fitch is maybe the second, our third biggest
- 1:30Speaker 4: in that ratings game. But a few things that we
- 1:33Speaker 4: talked about before, Like the biggest takeaways I had is
- 1:35Speaker 4: our debt to GDP.
- 1:36Speaker 5: Ratio is too high.
- 1:38Speaker 4: If we're looking and we owe as a country thirty
- 1:41Speaker 4: one point four trillion dollars and debt, we're now in
- 1:45Speaker 4: the brink of Americans losing Social Security if you're under
- 1:48Speaker 4: the age of fifty. Our overall fiscal policy is a
- 1:52Speaker 4: absolute disaster. Higher interest rates, and that when we got
- 1:57Speaker 4: off quantitative easing as a part of this as well.
- 2:00Speaker 5: But even Bill Acklin said he's now.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Shortening thirty year treasuries for everyone in Sniper that would
- 2:07Speaker 4: be the equivalent of ZB And the truth is like,
- 2:10Speaker 4: we have to do a lot better job of managing
- 2:12Speaker 4: our debt. And the truth is like our leadership politically
- 2:15Speaker 4: has failed us so bad over the last.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Twenty years to put us in this position.
- 2:20Speaker 4: If I'm going to be very honest, if I'm doing
- 2:22Speaker 4: a SWAT analysis, which is like the strengths and weaknesses.
- 2:26Speaker 4: We haven't had great leadership in a long time. And
- 2:29Speaker 4: if you take out quantitative easing, the presidency of Barack Obama,
- 2:34Speaker 4: which I know certain people will have an issue with
- 2:36Speaker 4: his reign as president, we've really been in trouble collectively
- 2:41Speaker 4: as a country since nineteen ninety seven. Financially, rasha to
- 2:45Speaker 4: bring it up from time to time, but like tech
- 2:47Speaker 4: had a flat decade, and what really exacerbated excuse me,
- 2:54Speaker 4: or got us out of that crisis was quantitative easing,
- 2:57Speaker 4: and then we saw this miraculous tech boom from the
- 3:00Speaker 4: time Barack Obama gote and it started to taper off
- 3:03Speaker 4: around twenty twenty. But if we didn't have those two
- 3:05Speaker 4: things in place, who knows what we'll be. We probably
- 3:09Speaker 4: could have been the equivalent of Japan of having like
- 3:11Speaker 4: a flat two decades. Sweden, Norway, Australia did Mark have
- 3:16Speaker 4: amazing balance sheets. In comparison, we are leading the world's
- 3:19Speaker 4: race and having the most debt and we need to
- 3:22Speaker 4: borrow two trillion dollars in the next.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Two quarters to pay our bills.
- 3:26Speaker 4: So when I say our country is broke and the
- 3:31Speaker 4: positives are yes, amazing stock market, you probably have some
- 3:36Speaker 4: of the best opportunities here compared to other countries. I
- 3:40Speaker 4: think that leader is slowly diminishing. But I think we
- 3:43Speaker 4: need much better leadership politically.
- 3:46Speaker 6: Yeah, but now I was gonna say, I mean, that's
- 3:49Speaker 6: kind of like what the agency was saying. Like if
- 3:51Speaker 6: you even read their quote, it was one of the
- 3:53Speaker 6: reasons for the downgrade, the number one thing except was
- 3:56Speaker 6: the repeated debt and the political standoffs and last lasts,
- 4:00Speaker 6: and so we've seen these Hey, the government's gonna shut down,
- 4:03Speaker 6: government's gonna shut down.
- 4:04Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean at the last minute, I will.
- 4:07Speaker 8: Figure it out, but there might be a time where
- 4:09Speaker 8: they don't figure it out.
- 4:11Speaker 4: That's really I was talking to my mom about this
- 4:14Speaker 4: the other day. But let's go back to nineteen seventy.
- 4:19Speaker 4: What presidents would you have run your company or a
- 4:22Speaker 4: major company that were president over the last forty or
- 4:24Speaker 4: fifty years. It shouldn't take that long to answer, Like, Congress,
- 4:33Speaker 4: I think we need to I think we're shot. You
- 4:35Speaker 4: brought this up a couple of weeks ago. There needs
- 4:37Speaker 4: to be an age limit on how long you can
- 4:40Speaker 4: be in Congress as well. I think some of the
- 4:42Speaker 4: leadership decisions that are being made would not be made
- 4:44Speaker 4: if we had more thirty year olds, forty year olds
- 4:46Speaker 4: and fifty year olds there. I know everyone dragted Nancy
- 4:52Speaker 4: Pelosi over the coldest for our stock and trade and
- 4:54Speaker 4: investment insights and returns that.
- 4:56Speaker 5: She's able to get, but I think we need a
- 4:58Speaker 5: complete overhaul of our political system because things are not
- 5:03Speaker 5: going well.
- 5:04Speaker 4: I know some people are going to argue that the
- 5:06Speaker 4: rating agency doesn't matter, but I think in combination with
- 5:10Speaker 4: real estate going up as quickly as it did over
- 5:13Speaker 4: the last three years, we're going to hover around five
- 5:15Speaker 4: to eight percent for the next seven to eight years
- 5:18Speaker 4: for the overall interest rates. This is going to drive
- 5:21Speaker 4: It's feeling like two thousand and seven. I remember when
- 5:23Speaker 4: I was in Atlanta in two thousand and seven and
- 5:26Speaker 4: Norcross and Alpharetta, and everyone was like, Yo, everything's going
- 5:30Speaker 4: to be fine. And it took an act of God,
- 5:32Speaker 4: damn near to make the recession go away, and business
- 5:35Speaker 4: was a lot slower. And if we don't fix this
- 5:38Speaker 4: very soon, I think we can go back to a
- 5:40Speaker 4: much slower economy. I know we talked about it last week.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Shout out to dbs Maul, I appreciate you. He'll drop
- 5:46Speaker 4: a lot of money bags in the comments, but there's
- 5:48Speaker 4: not a lot of people that have a lot of
- 5:50Speaker 4: money that is freely flowing around, and businesses are getting tighter.
- 5:53Speaker 5: And we'll talk about Apple later.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Even Apple started to suffer slower iPad and iPhone sales
- 6:00Speaker 4: as a result because money is not flowing around. So
- 6:02Speaker 4: if we do not turn this around, it's going to
- 6:05Speaker 4: be an issue. I'll say this and wrap it up.
- 6:08Speaker 4: But I do think if we have a president that
- 6:10Speaker 4: poses a real solution to some of these problems, he
- 6:13Speaker 4: could probably want to be one of the greatest superheroes
- 6:15Speaker 4: of this century. Because no one I hear on a
- 6:18Speaker 4: not Divivak, not Trump, not Robert F. Kennedy, not Biden.
- 6:22Speaker 4: I don't hear anyone talking about a real solution. So
- 6:25Speaker 4: for all the politicians that listen, man, if one of
- 6:29Speaker 4: you gets on a platform like this one or invest
- 6:32Speaker 4: that so market mondays and give people an actual solution
- 6:35Speaker 4: and tell people the truth about what it's going to
- 6:37Speaker 4: take to turn the country around.
- 6:39Speaker 5: You are there to be a dictator.
- 6:41Speaker 4: But I don't see anyone in the political landscape that
- 6:44Speaker 4: is willing to do so. But when I'm looking forward
- 6:46Speaker 4: to edge on what we need. We need a fearless
- 6:48Speaker 4: leader that can rally not only the citizens, but senators
- 6:53Speaker 4: and congressmen to have changed come about.
- 6:57Speaker 7: So does this affect us from an investor standpoint?
- 6:59Speaker 8: Right is absolutely, But from the standpoint like if we're
- 7:02Speaker 8: looking at politics, this doesn't mean we've seen there hasn't
- 7:08Speaker 8: been by partisanship for we could say last ten years,
- 7:12Speaker 8: but for the past five it's been terrible.
- 7:15Speaker 7: It's been absolutely terrible.
- 7:16Speaker 8: I don't see any let up on this, and so
- 7:21Speaker 8: can we can we say that this can We're only
- 7:24Speaker 8: getting downgraded in the first in the first agency.
- 7:27Speaker 7: Can you see it happening in SMP and Moodies as well?
- 7:30Speaker 4: Absolutely? I mean SMP was the one who did twelve
- 7:33Speaker 4: years ago. And if Moody does it, which is one
- 7:35Speaker 4: of my favorite stocks ticker MCO. So you guys can
- 7:38Speaker 4: watch that and put that in your watch list, but
- 7:40Speaker 4: if they do it as well, it's really just saying
- 7:43Speaker 4: what I've.
- 7:45Speaker 7: Earnest, what's up?
- 7:45Speaker 9: You ever walk into a small business and everything just

- 9:35Speaker 1: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 9:39Speaker 1: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from El Salvador
- 9:43Speaker 1: accused of murdering a Texas. Man of Venezuelan charged with
- 9:47Speaker 1: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 9:51Speaker 1: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 9:55Speaker 1: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy nom, the United States

- 10:07Speaker 1: one hundred thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you
- 10:10Speaker 1: were here illegally, your next you will be fine nearly
- 10:14Speaker 1: one thousand dollars a day. Imprisoned and deported, you will

- 10:25Speaker 1: Do what's right. Leave now. Under President Trump, America's laws,
- 10:30Speaker 1: border and families will be protected.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Sponsored by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Been screaming since two years ago, even though they won't
- 10:40Speaker 4: announce that we are in a recession. The business fundamentals
- 10:43Speaker 4: of the country is now. If I was to look
- 10:45Speaker 4: at the United States of America like a company, what
- 10:50Speaker 4: is this benefit really? Technology and some of the exports
- 10:54Speaker 4: that we do have great? Who is the CEO? Biden
- 10:56Speaker 4: would be CEO? Is he the best? What are some
- 11:02Speaker 4: of our weaknesses? And we have a bunch of industries
- 11:04Speaker 4: and a bunch of countries trying to team up at
- 11:06Speaker 4: one time to take us down.
- 11:08Speaker 5: There are some changes that need to be made.
- 11:09Speaker 4: So yeah, Tuesday through Friday of last week the market
- 11:12Speaker 4: fell apart, like Apple went from one ninety something to
- 11:14Speaker 4: one fell four percent and one day.
- 11:18Speaker 5: That's not because of the earners report.
- 11:20Speaker 4: People are being a lot more And I always go
- 11:24Speaker 4: to Troy, like to Rashad's example. So whenever you tell
- 11:27Speaker 4: Rashad about investment, he's gonna We'll tell me how it
- 11:29Speaker 4: won't work. It reminds me a lot of my dad.
- 11:31Speaker 4: My dad doesn't want to hear about any of the upside.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Tell me what can go wrong. One of the things
- 11:35Speaker 4: that can drag tech and a nastack down dramatically is
- 11:39Speaker 4: these ratings.
- 11:40Speaker 5: And then if they.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Start telling the truth about how our economy is doing.
- 11:45Speaker 4: This is just one rating agency that most people never
- 11:47Speaker 4: heard of, and the market fell five percent. I imagine
- 11:51Speaker 4: if they come out and just say, yeah, without quantitative Eason,
- 11:54Speaker 4: we wouldn't have done well. We don't have a plan
- 11:56Speaker 4: to fix it because I'm not hearing many people pose
- 11:59Speaker 4: many solutions. That's why I think like Market Monday's the
- 12:01Speaker 4: show markut Monday's Live the Best that'st is so important
- 12:04Speaker 4: because you're going to get a chance to hear from
- 12:07Speaker 4: billionaires and millionaires that are like.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Actively trying to fit some of these solutions.
- 12:13Speaker 4: But it definitely will affect us because if Yellow the
- 12:16Speaker 4: trucking company went out of business, Disney's having trouble. When
- 12:19Speaker 4: I when it did my analysis earlier, Disney only has
- 12:23Speaker 4: like a thirty seven percent excuse me, less than two
- 12:25Speaker 4: percent chance of going out of business, But ten years
- 12:28Speaker 4: ago it was less than zero point three percent that
- 12:31Speaker 4: they zero point zeros are three percent that they could.
- 12:34Speaker 4: America I won't say is in a decline phase, but
- 12:37Speaker 4: it is. The economy is a lot softer than we
- 12:40Speaker 4: needed to be. And the truth is, we talked about
- 12:43Speaker 4: it before. There are a lot of jobs that are available,
- 12:44Speaker 4: but they are not high pain. And even when I'm
- 12:47Speaker 4: seeing travel internationally, I asked at the front, ask them
- 12:50Speaker 4: like how are sales? One of my favorite questions to ask,
- 12:53Speaker 4: and down sixty percent year of a year. We're the
- 12:57Speaker 4: customer base four turks. So if we're going most people
- 13:01Speaker 4: are hurting. Rent is going up, mortgages are going up.
- 13:05Speaker 4: This is definitely going to be a tougher time and
- 13:08Speaker 4: we need leadership to come in and fix us. But
- 13:10Speaker 4: I definitely want to ask you guys, what do you think?
- 13:11Speaker 4: Because you're traveling around, you're talking to different people. Got
- 13:14Speaker 4: an amazing episode coming out Friday. We'll love to hear
- 13:17Speaker 4: their thoughts on economy. But but how do you guys feel
- 13:20Speaker 4: about this writing?
- 13:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think that it's a tremendously big deal
- 13:25Speaker 3: in the grand scheme of things, but when it's not,
- 13:29Speaker 3: it's not beneficial. That's why I always look at life like,
- 13:32Speaker 3: you know, some like it's like, okay, should we do
- 13:37Speaker 3: a commercial for market Mondays. It couldn't hurt, It might not,
- 13:42Speaker 3: might not be, might not be the most beneficial beneficial,
- 13:45Speaker 3: but couldn't it couldn't hurt. And then it's like, all right, well,
- 13:50Speaker 3: if the audio is extremely bad on Market Mondays, right,
- 13:54Speaker 3: people still probably tune in, but it can't help.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I mean like sometimes that's how I look at life, like,
- 14:04Speaker 3: it can't be beneficial for America or for the economy.
- 14:09Speaker 3: It might not be the tipping point that's going to
- 14:11Speaker 3: break it at the stock market, but it's not helpful.
- 14:16Speaker 3: And you know, if this starts a trend and you know,
- 14:19Speaker 3: people become more and more you know, scary and weary
- 14:24Speaker 3: about you know, America's ability to pay back its loans,
- 14:30Speaker 3: that's never beneficial. So I think that I'm not one
- 14:35Speaker 3: hundred percent worried about this right now. I don't think
- 14:40Speaker 3: it's too big of a deal, but it is something
- 14:43Speaker 3: to at the very least be aware of and to
- 14:46Speaker 3: monitor because it's not something that you want to you know,
- 14:50Speaker 3: continuously go down.
- 14:51Speaker 7: It's this slope of getting downgraded. Yeah, I will add
- 14:56Speaker 7: just briefly to that.
- 14:56Speaker 8: I mean when we think of the word credit and
- 14:58Speaker 8: we think about even from a personal standpoint, and I'd
- 15:01Speaker 8: like to rely on that because it just means how
- 15:04Speaker 8: trustworthy are you? Yep, right, Like from a personal standpoint,
- 15:08Speaker 8: from a country standpoint, you're talking about the leader, and
- 15:10Speaker 8: from a global economy the United States, how trustworthy are
- 15:14Speaker 8: we if we continue to have so much debt and
- 15:16Speaker 8: our GDP is not matching or keeping up pace with that.
- 15:19Speaker 8: And so we name the non countries that have triple
- 15:23Speaker 8: A ratings, so you know, number one thing it tells
- 15:26Speaker 8: you is that these people are going to be trusted
- 15:28Speaker 8: and so what will business look like going forward for
- 15:31Speaker 8: those countries?
- 15:32Speaker 7: And how do we get back to that standpoint?
- 15:34Speaker 8: I know we sat from a political standpoint, that's the
- 15:36Speaker 8: first piece, but that's just one thing, right, Like the
- 15:39Speaker 8: political part is one part.
- 15:40Speaker 7: But how do we pay off the debt?
- 15:42Speaker 8: Like the piece putting the pieces in place are important,
- 15:44Speaker 8: but what is the action plan to actually alleviate some
- 15:47Speaker 8: of this debt? Because it hasn't it's only going up
- 15:50Speaker 8: over the past five ten years.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, Trumack made the point, like we still
- 15:56Speaker 4: are the number one country, have the number one currency,
- 15:59Speaker 4: and what our investors alternatives with. The alternative is to
- 16:02Speaker 4: do nothing. You don't have to park your because like
- 16:06Speaker 4: a lot of foreign entities don't want to buy our
- 16:08Speaker 4: debt at this current rate.
- 16:10Speaker 5: Option is to put it elsewhere.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Like that's why we talked about the Saudi's and shout
- 16:14Speaker 4: out to whoever made the opinion piece talking about shit,
- 16:17Speaker 4: the Saudis go after Lebron after we talked about it
- 16:19Speaker 4: last week. I appreciate you, but give us credit. But
- 16:23Speaker 4: the option is to always do nothing. Like private equity
- 16:28Speaker 4: and like the top tier firms are very good at
- 16:32Speaker 4: putting their powder on the side and winning for the
- 16:34Speaker 4: right opportunity. And I keep saying that there shouldn't be
- 16:37Speaker 4: seven companies that are ruling the returns of twenty twenty three.
- 16:43Speaker 4: I mean, if you want to dice it down to
- 16:45Speaker 4: international companies as well, and maybe like fourteen companies overall
- 16:48Speaker 4: that are just like consistently dominating out of six thousand stocks.
- 16:53Speaker 4: If that isn't a sign that our credit is weakening
- 16:56Speaker 4: and that the economy is in the stable as it
- 16:58Speaker 4: should be, I don't know what it is, but.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Stay tuned.
- 17:02Speaker 4: And that's why I always say you have to invest
- 17:04Speaker 4: in the best companies because they'll provide your return regardless
- 17:08Speaker 4: of what the market is giving you at the time.
- 17:11Speaker 8: So how will they refinance the debt? That'll be the question.
- 17:16Speaker 5: It's gonna be tough.
- 17:18Speaker 1: We'll see an illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping
- 17:22Speaker 1: a child in Massachusetts, an MS thirteen gang member from
- 17:25Speaker 1: Al Salvador accused of murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan
- 17:30Speaker 1: charged with filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These
- 17:34Speaker 1: are just some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because
- 17:38Speaker 1: of President Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy Noman, the
- 17:41Speaker 1: United States Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted
- 17:46Speaker 1: illegal border crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded,
