- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. You know what they don't tell
- 0:34you when you have Parkinson's? That it's going to unlock some
- 0:37really weird superpowers. Superpowers.
- 0:41Yeah. Like, how about like one handed
- 0:43ninja level laundry folding? Or how about the ability to
- 0:46slide into a chair so smoothly that you think I trained in the
- 0:49Matrix? Well, you know what?
- 0:51This is Part 1 of my new miniseries, Parkinson's
- 0:53Superpowers. The weird things that I have
- 0:56gotten good at. And we're going to kick it off
- 0:58today with the physical stuff. Hey, welcome back to Living with
- 1:13Parkinson's, the Good, the bad, and the reality.
- 1:17So if you're new here, I'm Bryce, and this channel is all
- 1:19about real talk, encouragement, and a little laughter along the
- 1:22way. You know that Parkinson's is a
- 1:24thief and it takes things, but it also teaches us to adapt and
- 1:28to get creative. And in some weird ways, it gives
- 1:31us skills that we've never planned for.
- 1:33So today I'm going to celebrate the weird, the useful, and the
- 1:36kind of impressive physical superpowers that I picked up
- 1:39since my diagnosis. And at the end, I'm going to
- 1:42tell you about the one move I pull when I don't feel like
- 1:45doing something it well, it might technically be called a
- 1:48manipulative, manipulative, manipulative, but it depends who
- 1:53you talk to, I guess. But guess what, I've got a
- 1:56neurological brain disorder. Anyway, let's get into here.
- 1:59Let's get into this right now. So here is my first superpower,
- 2:03right? And again, play along with me.
- 2:05If you, as you start hearing this stuff and maybe some
- 2:08resonates, I want to hear what your superpower is.
- 2:10Put it in the chat. Let me know and and we'll see if
- 2:13if we have any, but mine is the one handed mastery right Master
- 2:17street. I can fold the T-shirt, I can
- 2:19zip up a jacket and I can prep a sandwich with one hand like I'm
- 2:23training for a cooking show, like I'm training for a cooking
- 2:26show speed round like I can do it one hand.
- 2:30Why? Because sometimes my other hands
- 2:31on strike. So I just had to adapt and now
- 2:35my one handed game is strong. I mean I I would never
- 2:39ambidextrous. I was always just right-handed.
- 2:41It's crazy. I I'm right-handed like right
- 2:43with my right hand. I throw, I guess throw baseball
- 2:45at the right hand, but bat left. I shoot left.
- 2:48Batting for baseball. Hockey is shooting and you're
- 2:52outside of Canada, then maybe you don't know what hockey is.
- 2:54But anyway, I shoot with my left hand, I bat with my left, I bat
- 2:57left, I shoot left and I write with my right hand.
- 2:59But anyway, I've never been as as many directors.
- 3:01But you know what Parkinson's tried to steal like one of my
- 3:05especially my right, right arm. So I've had to learn how to do
- 3:07things with my other arm. The thing that the one that I
- 3:09always thought wasn't as strong and the one that I, you know,
- 3:12couldn't really do much with. And that's like I said, it's
- 3:14become a one handed ninja. So anyway, that's my superpower
- 3:17#1 how about this one superpower #2 this is my ninja level ninja
- 3:22level chair control. I don't sit, I descend slowly,
- 3:27smoothly, and strategically. Too fast and I'm jolted and too
- 3:30slow and I look like I'm glitching but just right.
- 3:35Stay with us. We'll be right back.
- 4:20It's like chair poetry, You know, here's the thing.
- 4:24Have you ever had one of those days, like those Parkinson days?
- 4:26I just call them like Parky days, Like Parkinson days where,
- 4:29you know, you just kind of like he just kind of like get pissed
- 4:33off. You get pissed off at
- 4:35Parkinson's. Well, I've been around here for
- 4:38a little bit, you know that when I get pissed off, I kind of try
- 4:39to make fun of it. I try to try to make fun of my
- 4:42Parkinson's. I try to like just and get at
- 4:45it. So I'm in one of those days and
- 4:47hopefully, if you're going to enjoy this, I, which I hope you
- 4:49will and I hope you do and you know, you're, you're going to be
- 4:52the benefactor of my bad Parkinson's day because I want
- 4:55to blast the hell out of my Parkinson's.
- 4:57I want to make fun of it. I want to take back that power
- 5:00and I'm going to do a three-part mini series because I was just
- 5:03kind of like sitting here and I was just really thinking about
- 5:06all the things that that I can do that are really cool anyway.
- 5:09But I think they're cool and I'm going to share it with you.
- 5:12And again, I want to hear yours. So put them in the comments.
- 5:14This is all about engagements community.
- 5:16So let me know. Don't let me hang in here.
- 5:18OK. All right, so here's my third
- 5:19superpower. I was thinking about.
- 5:21How about this? Like I shuffle like a pro
- 5:23shuffle. Yeah, shuffling.
- 5:25I may not walk fast, but let me tell you, there's this tight
- 5:28space, like a hallway or a crowd.
- 5:30I can shuffle through there just like a ghost.
- 5:33I mean, it's like, woo Hoo. I mean, I have the moves.
- 5:35I have actual moves. I can't.
- 5:37It's just kind of it's like, again, stealth mode activated.
- 5:40It's so incredible. I can just slide through and no
- 5:43one ever sees me. How about this when I never even
- 5:46thought about superpower #4 my medication, timing, precision.
- 5:51You know what, I may not remember what day it is, but I
- 5:53can tell you exactly when I took my last Lemodopa and how long
- 5:57I've got before I turn into a mannequin.
- 5:59And absolutely that is ha ha ha ha moment.
- 6:02I'm saying that to get power over it because I have no idea
- 6:05when I take my medication. I really don't.
- 6:07I, I actually could take a pill and I could forget 5 minutes
- 6:10later I'll tell my my wife. I'll be like, she'll be like,
- 6:12hey, it's time for your meds. And I guess I take them and if 2
- 6:16minutes go by and I'm kind of did I take my pills?
- 6:18Do you remember if I took my pills?
- 6:20It's quite crazy. So a lot of times I'm on a three
- 6:22hour cycle with my, with my levodopa.
- 6:24And a lot of times I think I end up taking it about an hour, an
- 6:26hour and a half in because I'd rather take it.
- 6:29And I'd rather, I'd rather the error on the side that I missed
- 6:34it. And I'll take a little bit more
- 6:35than run out. I'd rather have a little bit
- 6:37more let it open me then run out.
- 6:38But anyway, I don't want to turn into a mannequin, believe me.
- 6:44Which leads me into superhound #5.
- 6:46How about this? Coffee tables, doors, frames,
- 6:50kitchen counters, They're not just furniture, They're part of
- 6:54the team. They're part of my team.
- 6:55I moved through my house like I'm playing real life book art,
- 6:58using everything to balance. Like, I mean, literally, I've
- 7:02become like this master furniture, like my furniture is
- 7:05like my support system. It's like they're like a friend
- 7:08of mine. I I mean, especially if I wake
- 7:10up in the middle of night and and it's like a pinball time for
- 7:12me. I'm like, I got the dresser on
- 7:13the way by. I got the door on the way
- 7:15through the door frames on the way.
- 7:17I hit the wall by the, by the toilet or whatever and I grabbed
- 7:21a side of things. It's like become like this.
- 7:23I, I, you think about, you know, they think people like get
- 7:26accessory the, the, the, the handicap or handicap.
- 7:30My goodness, you know, people need like railings.
- 7:32I guess what I'm trying to say is they need railings and, and
- 7:34ways to get through things. I mean, who needs railings when
- 7:37you've got dressers and you've got tables and coffee tables?
- 7:40I mean, who needs that anyway? But here is my bonus superpower.
- 7:45This is my bonus one. This is like what I call my
- 7:48built in excuse and I don't play.
- 7:50I don't know about you. And in the comments.
- 7:53Do you use, do you ever play the Parkinson card?
- 7:57You know, I went for so many years of, of pretending I didn't
- 7:59have it or not knowing I didn't have it or not wanting anybody
- 8:02to know I had it, that it's really was hard for me at the
- 8:05beginning to even mention that I had it, had Parkinson's and was
- 8:08diagnosed. But do you ever play the card?
- 8:11Like do you ever like all those days you just want to cash it in
- 8:13here and you're kind of like, no, I'm going to have a
- 8:15Parkinson day. I'm going to call into work.
- 8:17I'm going to do whatever because I'm just, I'm having a Parkinson
- 8:19day. OK, well, this one for me isn't
- 8:23physical, right? That makes me giggle.
- 8:25I don't know why. I really don't know why.
- 8:27But anyway, it makes me giggle and and here it is.
- 8:33It's not physical, but it feels like a superpower.
- 8:35You know, sometimes I just look at my wife and I give her these
- 8:38eyes like she calls them like my little puppy dog eyes.
- 8:41And I'll just look at her and I'm like, and I'll forget.
- 8:44Let's say I forgot the garbage. Like, you know, could you take
- 8:47the garbage out? I don't need to do anything
- 8:48today. But when I come home, by the
- 8:50time I go home, can you just make sure the garbage is out
- 8:52because it's garbage day. And of course I forget.
- 8:55And, you know, she'll just look at me and I know she's got that
- 8:58look and I'm just going to look at her.
- 8:59And I just go like, I'm really, really sorry, but I don't know
- 9:03if you know this or not or if you maybe forgot.
- 9:05But I have a neurological brain disorder and it makes like this
- 9:11particular task really difficult.
- 9:14And I'm really sorry it wasn't something I asked for and it's
- 9:17not something I want, but it is a progressive brain disorder
- 9:25anyway. And, and I'll pull that out when
- 9:27I need it. Trust me, it doesn't work.
- 9:28It really doesn't work, but it just makes me feel better.
- 9:30And I don't know why that is, but it does makes me feel
- 9:33better. Anyway, this is Part 1.
- 9:35I'm going to do a three-part miniseries part you're in Part 1
- 9:37right now. Part 2, Part 3, I'm dropping
- 9:39them all at the same time so we can just kind of walk, watch
- 9:42them in order. And I broke them into different
- 9:44parts. And this was like the physical
- 9:45things, my physical superpowers. But I wanted to know what your
- 9:48superpowers are, what physical, What can you do now with
- 9:52Parkinson's that you couldn't do before?
- 9:54I want to know because it's incredible the things that teams
- 9:57that we can, we can, if you really sit down, you can
- 9:59actually think of like these crazy, wild, weird things that
- 10:02you can do that you couldn't do before.
- 10:05So you know what, Parkinson's messes up a lot of things, but
- 10:07it's also made me very weirdly good.
- 10:10And it's stuff that I never expected.
- 10:12All right, again, what's your Parkinson's superpower?
- 10:14And you're going to join me for Part 2.
- 10:16So thanks for watching because I'm going to see you there right
- 10:18now and let's get stealthy and we're going to end the Part 2.
- 10:22Part 2 is going to be the mental and the emotional side.
- 10:25What are superpowers mental and emotional?
- 10:27And if you're watching right now, let's go there right now.
- 10:33Parkinson's may be part of your life, but it doesn't get to
- 10:36define it. Thanks for listening to Living
- 10:38with Parkinson's, the good, the Bad, and the Reality.
