Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Ready for another bite-sized lesson? Lucas: Absolutely. Last time we covered tomato and potato. Today we're adding two more veggies that are super common in Ethiopian cooking. Luna: Oh, I love Ethiopian food. Is it cabbage and garlic by any chance? Lucas: You guessed it. Cabbage is ጎመን. Say it with me: ጎመን. Luna: ጎመን. Lucas: Great. And garlic is ነጭ ሽንኩርት. Literally 'white onion.' Try it. Luna: ነጭ ሽንኩርት. That's a mouthful. Lucas: It is. But you'll get it. So at the market, you might say ጎመን እፈልጋለሁ — I want cabbage. Luna: ጎመን እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Perfect. And if you need garlic for a recipe, you say That means 'I need garlic,' right? Lucas: Exactly. You could also ask the vendor: ምን ያስፈልገኛል? — What do I need? But that's a bit advanced. Luna: Good to know. So if I want both, I say Lucas: Yes! Cabbage and garlic. You're a natural. Luna: Aww, thanks. You know, learning these words makes me want to cook some gomen. Let's do a quick scene: I'm at the market and I say to the vendor, ጎመን እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: And the vendor says, እሺ, ጎመን ይኸው — Okay, here's the cabbage. Now you say, ነጭ ሽንኩርት ደግሞ ያስፈልገኛል — I also need garlic. Lucas: Beautiful. So to review: ጎመን is cabbage, ነጭ ሽንኩርት is garlic. Luna: ጎመን እፈልጋለሁ — I want cabbage. Lucas: You've got it. Practice those and next time you're at an Ethiopian market, you'll be ready. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. See you all next time on Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Lucas: Bye for now.
