- 0:25Speaker 1: year and a half later off right now, enjoying the
- 0:27Speaker 1: wonderful country of Italy. So we'll get reports back from
- 0:30Speaker 1: JD when he is back. But it's me and Tal
- 0:31Speaker 1: coming at you right now here on Unscripted. And you know, listen,
- 0:34Speaker 1: every great show has a little clip show right the
- 0:37Speaker 1: highlights the best of whether it's the Tonight Show.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Or a Tonight Shall Unscripted, we want to show you
- 0:41Speaker 2: what really was season one. So tell it's been a pleasure,
- 0:43Speaker 2: my friend. I think this will be a fun episode, right,
- 0:46Speaker 2: A lot of fun.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I think it'll be cool to look back on and
- 0:49Speaker 3: everything that's gone on since we started the show at
- 0:52Speaker 3: the beginning of the season and just going through these clips.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I actually even forgot about how fun some of our
- 0:57Speaker 3: guests have been since we got started.
- 0:59Speaker 2: So it'll be a lot of fun going through all
- 1:01Speaker 2: these always a good feeling.
- 1:03Speaker 1: By the way, our special guest today brand new content
- 1:05Speaker 1: has always unscripted is Mike Knuble was a seriously terrific
- 1:10Speaker 1: player for a long time the NHL over a thousand
- 1:12Speaker 1: games and has great stories. Great to job by talent
- 1:15Speaker 1: digging up the fact that he is the only player
- 1:17Speaker 1: ever to assist on goals by both Wayne Gretzky and
- 1:20Speaker 1: Alexander Ovechkin, the two greatest goal scorers in hockey history.
- 1:24Speaker 1: You hear what Canneble's thoughts are about that? And plus
- 1:27Speaker 1: what was really a storied career? So Mike Cannuble's coming up.
- 1:29Speaker 1: But first, some clips the best of NHL Unscripted Season one,
- 1:32Speaker 1: including our first guest who is hysterical, the kid Mirro
- 1:36Speaker 1: talking about Dominicans loving hockey. I love the fact, kid,
- 1:40Speaker 1: you mentioned the past how old men in the Dominican
- 1:42Speaker 1: Republic follow hockey stats religiously.
- 1:44Speaker 2: How does that happen?
- 1:46Speaker 4: Yes, because here in America we have recently well well
- 1:51Speaker 4: I mean in nationwide, we have recently legalized wagering on sports,
- 1:56Speaker 4: and the Dominican Republic wagering on sports has always been legal.
- 2:00Speaker 4: So nothing will motivate you to learn how many points
- 2:04Speaker 4: miras loft Chatan has in the season. And then a
- 2:09Speaker 4: little scratch, you know what I mean. So that was
- 2:11Speaker 4: literally the anecdotal story was me, what, so they're called
- 2:14Speaker 4: bankas in dr Like you can just walk into like
- 2:16Speaker 4: a little kioskue and like put in, you know, fill
- 2:18Speaker 4: out a ticket with whatever, parlay do do whatever. And
- 2:21Speaker 4: I saw a guy in there taking the over on
- 2:24Speaker 4: mirrorslapshintan goals for like at thirty or something like that.
- 2:29Speaker 4: He had forty that year.
- 2:30Speaker 5: I was like, damn. I was like, hey, Bartolo hit it.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Like, I'm seeing this guy fill out a ticket and
- 2:38Speaker 4: it's like mirror slaps. I was like, what it's like
- 2:41Speaker 4: Buffalo City, the whole nine. I was just like, yo,
- 2:43Speaker 4: this guy does not speak a word of English.
- 2:47Speaker 5: Where are y'all this are you? How do you get.
- 2:49Speaker 4: NHR network here in the Dominican Republic via satellite?
- 2:52Speaker 6: Like?
- 2:53Speaker 7: What are y'all doing?
- 2:54Speaker 1: Most recently, he was a member of the national team
- 2:56Speaker 1: the Bottle Goal for America and the double IHF World
- 2:59Speaker 1: Championships the first time since nineteen thirty three. Welcome Connor
- 3:02Speaker 1: Girl in the NHL in descripted how you doing man, good?
- 3:04Speaker 8: Thank you for having me.
- 3:05Speaker 9: Guys.
- 3:06Speaker 10: You've represented US now for a couple of tournaments, say
- 3:11Speaker 10: the least. What was different about this team? For you
- 3:14Speaker 10: and and and what was just the feeling in that
- 3:16Speaker 10: locker room from jump?
- 3:19Speaker 8: You know, the two other teams I was on had
- 3:21Speaker 8: a lot of success. We went, I believe six and one.
- 3:25Speaker 8: We won about eight games in a row and then
- 3:27Speaker 8: lost in the Semish. The other team we went undefeated
- 3:30Speaker 8: to the Semis. So the difference about this team was
- 3:32Speaker 8: we kind of got, you know, beat pretty good early
- 3:35Speaker 8: on in the tournament by Switzerland, and then we were
- 3:39Speaker 8: up five to one against Norway and we ended up
- 3:42Speaker 8: having to win in overtime.
- 3:44Speaker 11: They scored five straight the third.
- 3:45Speaker 8: So after that game, we kind of we had a
- 3:48Speaker 8: lot of changes, We worked on some stuff in our system,
- 3:50Speaker 8: made a couple of lineup changes, and as a group,
- 3:53Speaker 8: we kind of bought in and it was just nice
- 3:55Speaker 8: to have a wake up call and kind of get
- 3:56Speaker 8: your teeth kicked in by Switzerland early on, and we
- 3:59Speaker 8: had we had a lot of veterans that proud and
- 4:02Speaker 8: we weren't going to be another US team that lost
- 4:04Speaker 8: in the quarters or you know, so we were really
- 4:06Speaker 8: proud of how we bounced back after that.
- 4:08Speaker 1: How about Tage Thompson's overtime winning the celebration after that,
- 4:11Speaker 1: how sweet was that.
- 4:12Speaker 8: Yeah, it gives me goosebumps when you say it, like
- 4:14Speaker 8: at my neck.
- 4:15Speaker 10: It's the greatest.
- 4:17Speaker 8: It's the greatest feeling I've had in the game. Uh,
- 4:19Speaker 8: you know, I I I've lost a lot in the
- 4:22Speaker 8: semi finals or finals in my career in junior and
- 4:24Speaker 8: a very good league and the NHL last year we lost,
- 4:28Speaker 8: so it's to get on the other side of it.
- 4:30Speaker 8: Was such a great feeling. I was I was up next,
- 4:32Speaker 8: I was changing for him, so I was sitting kind
- 4:35Speaker 8: of trying to focus, uh, trying to figure out I
- 4:38Speaker 8: thought Filla was coming out. So I was like, oh,
- 4:40Speaker 8: this is gonna be a tough task on the big ice.
- 4:42Speaker 8: And uh, someone one of the coaches, I believe it
- 4:44Speaker 8: was night Or was right behind me and he just said,
- 4:47Speaker 8: you know, f and finish it. And I was like,
- 4:49Speaker 8: please finish it. So when when when you know, when
- 4:52Speaker 8: I heard him yell first it was I couldn't get
- 4:54Speaker 8: over the boards fast enough. It was a great, great feeling.
- 4:58Speaker 10: You guys did such a classy move at the end,
- 5:00Speaker 10: Uh with the Johnny goodrou jersey.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Was that something planned?
- 5:03Speaker 10: And and you know it was a guy that's smaller
- 5:07Speaker 10: in stature but plays a big game. You know, what
- 5:10Speaker 10: did Johnny mean to you and what did that moment
- 5:12Speaker 10: mean to you as a whole.
- 5:14Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't believe it was planned. I believe Zach
- 5:16Speaker 8: went and got it himself. And when he when he
- 5:20Speaker 8: brought it out, the captains we got around, we said,
- 5:22Speaker 8: let's take a picture with it with the trophy. Awesome,
- 5:25Speaker 8: And we went up there and I remember him telling
- 5:27Speaker 8: the guy who was representing the IHF that, you know,
- 5:29Speaker 8: we're not we're not taking a normal photo. We're gonna
- 5:31Speaker 8: have the jersey, and uh, you know, it was pretty cool,
- 5:34Speaker 8: pretty special to be a part of that. It's just
- 5:36Speaker 8: Johnny was, you know, kind of embodied USA Hockey. I
- 5:39Speaker 8: think USA Hockey's really trying to change what the World Championships.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Means to a lot of players.
- 5:45Speaker 8: It's, you know, used to be kind of a vacation
- 5:47Speaker 8: and you go over there and you play and whatever
- 5:49Speaker 8: happens happens. Now it's, you know, we want a lot
- 5:51Speaker 8: of guys, you know, our top end players to go
- 5:53Speaker 8: and try to win each year and and be a
- 5:55Speaker 8: powerhouse and and uh, you know in international hockey. So
- 5:59Speaker 8: he was one of the guys that would always go
- 6:01Speaker 8: when he wasn't in the playoffs. And for me personally,
- 6:03Speaker 8: I met him on my tour. I was fifteen years
- 6:05Speaker 8: old and Jerry Yorke brought him out of their locker
- 6:08Speaker 8: room to introduced him to me, and it was like
- 6:10Speaker 8: seeing you know, my idol.
- 6:12Speaker 12: It was it was unbelievable.
- 6:13Speaker 8: He's one of the first guys at that size that
- 6:15Speaker 8: you know, undersize used to be five nine, five ten
- 6:17Speaker 8: and I'm five, you know, seven five eight, and that's
- 6:19Speaker 8: what he was. So to see somebody at that stature
- 6:22Speaker 8: dominate college hockey and then the NHL, it just gave
- 6:25Speaker 8: me so much motivation. And uh, you know, he was
- 6:27Speaker 8: a special, special player.
- 6:29Speaker 1: It is BIZ, nasty ladies and gentlemen. Paul Albert Bissonette,
- 6:33Speaker 1: It's great to see him.
- 6:33Speaker 9: Man love the middle name and definitely loud, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 9: not a lot of not a lot of intelligent information
- 6:39Speaker 9: coming on my mouth, but definitely loud.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Well, it's a great point you make, Biz, because it's
- 6:43Speaker 1: a lot harder than people think when they ask you
- 6:45Speaker 1: to be candid, be outspoken, be authentic.
- 6:47Speaker 2: These are all words that TV executives use, and.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Yet if you truly are going to be as you said,
- 6:51Speaker 1: you're stravling that line all the time.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Yeah, when meeting everyone fired, this is the question.
- 6:56Speaker 1: We don't know what's the I want to see. The
- 6:58Speaker 1: closest came meeting fired. But what was a comment that
- 7:00Speaker 1: you said that They're like, eh, biz, next time, maybe
- 7:02Speaker 1: refrained from.
- 7:03Speaker 5: That, oh man.
- 7:04Speaker 9: And there was a lot I called in a decent
- 7:06Speaker 9: amount in my first year, first year and a half
- 7:08Speaker 9: with T and T, and uh yeah, I was just
- 7:11Speaker 9: like okay, like sorry, like you know, like I don't
- 7:14Speaker 9: really know what to say, Like I'm just kind of
- 7:15Speaker 9: an idiot, and I'll just kind of say what I'm thinking.
- 7:17Speaker 9: So that's kind of how I was on the podcast
- 7:20Speaker 9: and still am obviously because barstool doesn't give a shit.
- 7:23Speaker 9: Uh So yeah, I just uh, I can't remember anything
- 7:27Speaker 9: in particular. I did obviously get some calls with the
- 7:31Speaker 9: Babcock stuff where they were like, hey, like what's going
- 7:34Speaker 9: on here? And I'm like, listen, I go. I've had
- 7:36Speaker 9: players reach out. I'm talking on behalf of the players.
- 7:38Speaker 9: I understand if you have to let me go, but
- 7:41Speaker 9: this is what I'm hearing, and I'm sticking to my guns,
- 7:44Speaker 9: and they road they stuck by me and I'm forever
- 7:47Speaker 9: grateful and uh, that was probably the most chaos that
- 7:50Speaker 9: we went through in like a week, week and a half.
- 7:55Speaker 9: Columbus should be thanking me. They got their guy. Now,
- 7:57Speaker 9: they got Dean Evanson. There they're they're a wagon. Now
- 8:00Speaker 9: they're scary to watch Man. They're a hell of a team. Yeah,
- 8:03Speaker 9: no more bab cut see you later. Yeah, that's the side.
- 8:07Speaker 9: What was that I want to ask you before? What
- 8:09Speaker 9: was that audition? Like, do you remember your audition for TNT. Yeah.
- 8:13Speaker 9: I went in and it was Liam and Ace and
- 8:15Speaker 9: we just they kind of just were throwing softballs and
- 8:18Speaker 9: you know, you just kind of do your thing and
- 8:20Speaker 9: you leave and you don't know. I thought it was
- 8:22Speaker 9: a joke when I got the email to go for
- 8:24Speaker 9: the audition, I thought it was we got a prankster.
- 8:27Speaker 9: Foley is one of Yan's and Wits buddies from Boston,
- 8:31Speaker 9: so he's really good about pranking players. Like when Yans
- 8:34Speaker 9: was playing in Florida, he was texting x Flad acting
- 8:39Speaker 9: as the team chef and that he was going to
- 8:41Speaker 9: come over and cook this meal for like twelve of
- 8:44Speaker 9: the guys, like six players are excuse me, six of
- 8:47Speaker 9: the guys and their spouses, so everybody obviously was in
- 8:52Speaker 9: on it other than x Flad, and he's calling and
- 8:57Speaker 9: canceling this whole like, you know, steak lobster dinner as
- 9:00Speaker 9: he's hosting it at his house and x Flad's freaking out.
- 9:04Speaker 9: So this prankster guy is notorious for messing with the players.
- 9:07Speaker 9: So when I got the email, I was I was like, Okay,
- 9:10Speaker 9: this is Foles for sure messing with me, and then
- 9:13Speaker 9: obviously it ended up being true. So so yeah, I
- 9:17Speaker 9: don't know how I got into the full story, but
- 9:18Speaker 9: basically he's a prankster and it was the real deal,
- 9:21Speaker 9: and I went for the tryout and it all worked out.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Tusks up, Tyson Nash. Great to see you man, Thanks
- 9:26Speaker 2: so much for the time.
- 9:27Speaker 1: It's funny sooni as I talked to enforcers and tough guys, right,
- 9:30Speaker 1: Jody Shelley's too grimston and off the ice, it couldn't
- 9:32Speaker 1: be nice write sweethearts, much like yourself, engaging, funny, chrumming
- 9:36Speaker 1: guy on the ice, classic instigator, great shit disturber.
- 9:39Speaker 2: What's the most you ever pissed off an opponent?
- 9:43Speaker 11: Oh my god, I'll never forget.
- 9:46Speaker 6: We were in the playoffs against the San Jose Sharks,
- 9:48Speaker 6: and Tony Twist was retired at the time, and he
- 9:52Speaker 6: was back in Saint Louis and Kelly Chase came up
- 9:56Speaker 6: to me and Tony Twist's as wife was apparently playing
- 10:00Speaker 6: cards in the room and when they were in sam
- 10:05Speaker 6: or in Saint Louis the game before, and you know,
- 10:09Speaker 6: I kind of embellished the whole story, and I'm like,
- 10:12Speaker 6: oh my god, Tony Twist's wife was in your guys'
- 10:15Speaker 6: hotel room playing cards, So I'll never forget I think
- 10:19Speaker 6: it was I think it was Owen Nolan. I said, hey,
- 10:21Speaker 6: I'm just telling you. I know you and Twist he
- 10:24Speaker 6: used to be good buddies, but he is going to
- 10:26Speaker 6: absolutely murder you and everyone that was in that hotel
- 10:30Speaker 6: room with his ex wife.
- 10:33Speaker 11: I go, I don't know what happened in that hotel room,
- 10:35Speaker 11: but I was. I know it was nothing good.
- 10:38Speaker 6: And Tony Twist is going to lose his fucking mind
- 10:41Speaker 6: on you. And I mean, Tony Twist is one of
- 10:43Speaker 6: the toughest guys to ever play. Literally every face off
- 10:46Speaker 6: for the first twenty five minutes of the hockey game,
- 10:49Speaker 6: one of them came out there and was like, we
- 10:51Speaker 6: did nothing with her. We didn't touch her, we were
- 10:53Speaker 6: just playing cards. She's a friend of ours. I don't
- 10:55Speaker 6: know what you're talking about. What's going on?
- 10:57Speaker 7: This is a joke.
- 10:58Speaker 6: And literally after the game, the second the game ended,
- 11:02Speaker 6: I had about twenty text messages on my phone and
- 11:05Speaker 6: calls from Twister going what did you do? What did
- 11:09Speaker 6: you say? So I know they went on the other side.
- 11:12Speaker 6: They were on their phones going we didn't do anything.
- 11:15Speaker 6: This is a total joke, National stirn up Ship and
- 11:18Speaker 6: like literally they couldn't even focus on the hockey game
- 11:20Speaker 6: that night.
- 11:21Speaker 1: This is the same.
- 11:22Speaker 7: We absolutely drummed them, but.
- 11:25Speaker 6: We ended up losing the series, but sadly, but oh
- 11:27Speaker 6: my god, it was so it was so freaking funny.
- 11:30Speaker 6: But Kelly Chase just wound me up, set me out
- 11:33Speaker 6: there with all this material, and it didn't take much
- 11:36Speaker 6: to stir them up.
- 11:38Speaker 10: What's the what's the best chirp you've heard thrown your way?
- 11:43Speaker 2: Oh?
- 11:43Speaker 11: Man, I always want, I got yeah.
- 11:46Speaker 10: I always Brady called me a keith yandle wannabe and
- 11:50Speaker 10: I was I was in Arizona, I was dying.
- 11:56Speaker 9: Good.
- 11:57Speaker 11: Oh yeah, I mean I've heard them all right.
- 11:59Speaker 6: I mean, I I have I have a nose that
- 12:02Speaker 6: kind of gives it away. It's like a big potato,
- 12:05Speaker 6: like his focus regard in the shower. But I remember
- 12:07Speaker 6: Jason Strudwick one time he goes, hey, I heard Larry
- 12:10Speaker 6: Kolow offered you a million dollars or a nose full
- 12:13Speaker 6: of nickels. I mean, it's pretty bad when your whole
- 12:18Speaker 6: team right on your bench is laughing at you and
- 12:21Speaker 6: laughing with the other team.
- 12:23Speaker 7: So it was, yeah, it was. It was a pretty
- 12:25Speaker 7: good one.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen. Steve Leaevey Leaves is great to see him.
- 12:29Speaker 12: Man, Hey, how you doing, guys. Good to be with you,
- 12:32Speaker 12: Thanks for having me on.
- 12:33Speaker 3: We talk about the sort of the the heyday that you.
- 12:36Speaker 3: I mean, you've been a part of so many great
- 12:37Speaker 3: eras of ESPN, but for me that this is Sports
- 12:41Speaker 3: Center ads through the years are just so incredible, so iconic,
- 12:46Speaker 3: and you, of course star in a great one with
- 12:48Speaker 3: a younger Alexandra Ovechkin where he kind of plays a
- 12:53Speaker 3: Russian spy. So I can't speak to how well the
- 12:56Speaker 3: ad has aged over the years, but it's a classic.
- 12:59Speaker 3: I'm sure you get asked about it frequently. I'd love
- 13:01Speaker 3: to hear any stories about being on the with Ov
- 13:05Speaker 3: and Semon Varlamov of course, Yeah, make that ad.
- 13:09Speaker 12: So that's been that's gotten controversial by the way, Yeah
- 13:12Speaker 12: because of what you mentioned, Yeah, what's going on in
- 13:14Speaker 12: the real world. And we did run it back a
- 13:18Speaker 12: few times recently, you know, after he went for the chase,
- 13:20Speaker 12: going for the chase and gets the goal. So the
- 13:22Speaker 12: two quick stories about that and man, were you on campus?
- 13:25Speaker 11: Would you have been on campus that day?
- 13:26Speaker 2: Now one of the day I did see a match
- 13:28Speaker 2: in the one day. Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 12: So they wound up building the set on our basketball court.
- 13:33Speaker 12: It looks like it's a copy room right with the
- 13:36Speaker 12: copy machine and files and stuff like that. But because
- 13:40Speaker 12: of the goof of having to have him go through
- 13:42Speaker 12: the roof the ceiling there, they couldn't do it in
- 13:45Speaker 12: a real building. They had to set make a set
- 13:48Speaker 12: outside and rig the contraption there. And because of the
- 13:53Speaker 12: contraption and building a set outside of the basketball court,
- 13:56Speaker 12: I was told it was the most expensive This is
- 13:59Speaker 12: Sports Center promo ever made because of all those things
- 14:02Speaker 12: and the other really cool thing and this not surprise anyone.
- 14:05Speaker 12: We had a stunt double for Ovi. We had a
- 14:09Speaker 12: real stunt, double full Uni pads, same height, weight with
- 14:14Speaker 12: color hair at the time, all that stuff standing right there,
- 14:18Speaker 12: and OVI refused to let him in. Ob I do
- 14:21Speaker 12: my own stunts.
- 14:21Speaker 5: He's Tom Cruise. He figured that out, you know that
- 14:24Speaker 5: kind of thing.
- 14:24Speaker 12: So uh, those were the two really cool parts about
- 14:27Speaker 12: that commercial. And and people still come up randomly, like
- 14:31Speaker 12: I get a text from Neil Everett out of the
- 14:33Speaker 12: blue Ji Perferson and the only line is late night filings.
- 14:37Speaker 12: You know, like it because that's.
- 14:39Speaker 9: What he says.
- 14:39Speaker 5: He adds the s for some reason, you know, like
- 14:41Speaker 5: it's just it was.
- 14:43Speaker 12: It was a classic.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Those are fun to be in.
- 14:45Speaker 12: Guys anchors like myself, not like myself. Other anchors would
- 14:50Speaker 12: jump over themselves to get in the building when they
- 14:53Speaker 12: knew they were filming. Like guys would come back from
- 14:56Speaker 12: vacations early. I don't care there was their day off.
- 15:00Speaker 12: They don't care. They're coming to work because they wanted
- 15:02Speaker 12: to be in these things. It was so such a
- 15:04Speaker 12: big deal. And the last one I'll tell you about
- 15:06Speaker 12: this the athletes did not get paid. Ladanian Tomlinson through
- 15:13Speaker 12: flew coast to coast on his own dime because he
- 15:18Speaker 12: wanted to be in one and that would be really
- 15:19Speaker 12: cool with the mailbox. You gotta talk about the story
- 15:21Speaker 12: about this one.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I hit it.
- 15:23Speaker 12: Yeah, that's a goof with Ladanian Tomlinson is we're in
- 15:26Speaker 12: the mail room and he wears the shaded shield the
- 15:30Speaker 12: visor in his helmet. Okay, So he's putting the mail
- 15:33Speaker 12: in all the wrong places and all the wrong slots.
- 15:36Speaker 5: So I'm like, hey, lt you know what.
- 15:37Speaker 12: Are you doing. That's not for me, that's not me,
- 15:40Speaker 12: that's not me, and that's oh he's sorry. And they
- 15:42Speaker 12: keeps putting it in the wrong thing. So that's how
- 15:44Speaker 12: it ends. But his PR person is right there, as
- 15:48Speaker 12: they often are, and the PR person's a young person,
- 15:51Speaker 12: I guess, and they don't really get the goof and
- 15:54Speaker 12: they're pleading with the director and the producer. He can
- 15:57Speaker 12: do one with his helmet off, okay, And everybody's like, well,
- 16:01Speaker 12: then he's just an idiot.
- 16:02Speaker 13: Why would he be putting the mayor The whole goof
- 16:05Speaker 13: is because it's the shaded shield right that he can't
- 16:09Speaker 13: see what if he has no helmet on, why would
- 16:12Speaker 13: he be putting it in the wrong Then he's just
- 16:13Speaker 13: an idiot. And so the producer to try to please
- 16:18Speaker 13: this PR person does.
- 16:20Speaker 12: A whole other spot. You know, just at that second,
- 16:23Speaker 12: it's not funny. It never aired. I'll be surprised there
- 16:26Speaker 12: was even filming the camera at the time just to
- 16:28Speaker 12: sort of appease that PR flack at that moment. But
- 16:32Speaker 12: those who are blast to do and again, same deal,
- 16:35Speaker 12: I'm not funny. Like they gave us the words to say.
- 16:38Speaker 10: He was my landlord when I had hives Brad Richardson,
- 16:41Speaker 10: ladies and gentlemen.
- 16:44Speaker 14: Thanks, I was going on intro jay, Oh my gosh.
- 16:47Speaker 10: When you guys won that cup? What's her from that
- 16:49Speaker 10: kind of cup run? And the post you know, the
- 16:52Speaker 10: celebrations afterwards, what was your favorite like celebrity meat that
- 16:56Speaker 10: you got in like and favorite celebrity story from that.
- 16:59Speaker 10: You don't have to get into the details because leave
- 17:01Speaker 10: it for the birds, but like was your celebrity link.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Up like one quick one?
- 17:06Speaker 14: Like I mean, we had a lot of people hanging
- 17:07Speaker 14: around like, which was really fun and it was cool
- 17:11Speaker 14: to have. Like it was cool because you know, they
- 17:12Speaker 14: come down and like they want to like say hi,
- 17:14Speaker 14: do you after and it made you feel good and
- 17:16Speaker 14: that everyone was caring about it. So much, but probably
- 17:18Speaker 14: the one it was kind of like a weird night.
- 17:19Speaker 14: We had a copy, We had a party and like
- 17:22Speaker 14: just a kind of a friends and family party, and
- 17:24Speaker 14: then we were going to this place called Beacher's Madhouse.
- 17:26Speaker 14: It's at the Roosevelt and really cool spot back in
- 17:29Speaker 14: the day, and we're walking in. We had David Beckham
- 17:31Speaker 14: with us, and he was like, we're just shooting the ship,
- 17:33Speaker 14: walking in me and him, and he doesn't. They don't
- 17:36Speaker 14: let him in, No, I swear to God. So I'm like,
- 17:40Speaker 14: what the hell's going on? We walk in like just
- 17:42Speaker 14: like we're David Beckham, but he gets shut down. I
- 17:45Speaker 14: couldn't believe it, so that I had to get David
- 17:46Speaker 14: Beckham in the in the Beach's Madhouse.
- 17:48Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 17:49Speaker 14: So that was like, you know, feather in my cap.
- 17:51Speaker 14: I'm like, fucky, you know, I'm feeling pretty good tonight.
- 17:53Speaker 14: But it was it was kind of like that we
- 17:55Speaker 14: It was that was a funny one, but there were
- 17:57Speaker 14: so many great people. I'm actually staying at Roosevelt tonight.
- 18:00Speaker 14: So I'm a little reminiscent kicking in right now.
- 18:03Speaker 10: I mean, so when we played you guys that year,
- 18:06Speaker 10: I'm i always waited out in the hallway before we
- 18:08Speaker 10: went on the ice before every period. So I'm out
- 18:10Speaker 10: there before we go out for the first period. So
- 18:13Speaker 10: I'm sitting there and I'm getting ready and i see
- 18:14Speaker 10: these two kids walk by me and they're like, hey,
- 18:16Speaker 10: what's up. They're wearing King's jerseys. They're high five and
- 18:19Speaker 10: I'm like, hey, kids, what's up. So there's nobody else
- 18:20Speaker 10: out there but me and the PR guy. Yeah, all
- 18:22Speaker 10: of a sudden, I see this the dad walk by it.
- 18:24Speaker 10: It's David Beckham and he goes, hey, what's up, mate,
- 18:27Speaker 10: And I'm like, oh, what's up.
- 18:29Speaker 15: Doing, Dave.
- 18:31Speaker 10: He's like, hey, can And this is like a minute
- 18:33Speaker 10: before we go in the ice and the coaches are
- 18:34Speaker 10: about to walk out, and he's like, hey, can I
- 18:36Speaker 10: my kids get a picture with you? And I'm like uh,
- 18:39Speaker 10: And I'm looking at the PR guy and the PR
- 18:40Speaker 10: guys like kind of hands up, and I'm like.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Yeah, let's do quick, let's do it quick.
- 18:44Speaker 10: So I was like sitting there, I'm like taking a
- 18:45Speaker 10: picture and I'm like, you don't even realize. That's what's
- 18:48Speaker 10: cool about the Kings is that like the celebs are
- 18:51Speaker 10: such fans and like these guys that are larger than
- 18:53Speaker 10: life characters like Beck who was an athlete, or these
- 18:56Speaker 10: die hard hockey fans because of you guys.
- 18:59Speaker 14: Yeah, no, you're right, that's that's a funny story.
- 19:01Speaker 7: But you would have got in trouble for that.
- 19:02Speaker 11: I'm sure if they would stop, darn would have.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Saw that you would him be playing.
- 19:06Speaker 1: He is currently enjoying a career season for the upstart
- 19:09Speaker 1: Blue Jackets. He's not only the conversation with the Norse Trophy,
- 19:11Speaker 1: but he's also the conversation for the Heart Trophy.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Zach Wrensky, Welcome to NHL and SCRIPTO.
- 19:16Speaker 16: Great to see it, man, Yeah, thanks for having me on, guys,
- 19:18Speaker 16: I appreciate it.
- 19:19Speaker 10: I wanted to ask a little bit, you know, going
- 19:22Speaker 10: back to the start of your career in Columbus and
- 19:24Speaker 10: you know, obviously I'm sure you've had to tell a
- 19:26Speaker 10: million Tortorella stories, but I just wanted to ask more
- 19:30Speaker 10: on the note of like, what's one thing that you
- 19:32Speaker 10: kind of learned from torts that you're like, not many
- 19:35Speaker 10: people know about him, that that's why he's had such
- 19:38Speaker 10: a long career as a coach in the NHL.
- 19:41Speaker 16: Yeah, I mean, I think the thing with torts, and
- 19:43Speaker 16: it definitely gets mixed up in the media a little bit.
- 19:47Speaker 16: Is just how good of a person he is. I
- 19:49Speaker 16: don't think people understand that. Can you talk about a
- 19:54Speaker 16: family guy or a guy that wants you to be
- 19:55Speaker 16: around your your family like he's he's the one. He
- 19:58Speaker 16: gives you so many days off just to be home
- 20:00Speaker 16: with you know, your your wife and your kids and
- 20:04Speaker 16: whoever there. And my first year in the league. Actually
- 20:10Speaker 16: this is not a sad story, but it kind of said.
- 20:12Speaker 16: But my first year in the league, we were I
- 20:14Speaker 16: think five days away from playing my first game at
- 20:16Speaker 16: home in Detroit at Joe Louis. My grandfather passed away,
- 20:19Speaker 16: and I told towards that and he's like, go home.
- 20:21Speaker 16: I go home and skate by yourself, Like we don't
- 20:24Speaker 16: want to see you be around your family. So for
- 20:26Speaker 16: like five days he just gave him my year, didn't
- 20:29Speaker 16: didn't He called and checked in on me, but didn't
- 20:31Speaker 16: really care. He just trusted me, let me go home.
- 20:33Speaker 17: I was skating alone.
- 20:34Speaker 16: And then the first game at Joe Louis, he starts me,
- 20:37Speaker 16: you know opening and I haven't practiced with the team
- 20:39Speaker 16: at all, And I just think that goes a long
- 20:41Speaker 16: way right, Like he could have been he could have
- 20:43Speaker 16: been like, hey, once we land, you can go home
- 20:45Speaker 16: for a few hours or go home for the night.
- 20:46Speaker 16: But he was like, no, I'll get out of here,
- 20:47Speaker 16: like you don't need to be here. And that always
- 20:50Speaker 16: luck with me. My first year, I think I was
- 20:52Speaker 16: two or three months in a manhl career and that
- 20:55Speaker 16: was a moment for me where I just had a
- 20:57Speaker 16: lot of respect for him and that always luck with me.
- 20:59Speaker 16: And I feel like people don't see that side of him.
- 21:02Speaker 10: Yeah he doesn't.
- 21:02Speaker 5: He doesn't get enough of it.
- 21:04Speaker 10: And you know, everybody kind of tells the funny stories
- 21:07Speaker 10: but never like what he's kind of how he's impacted guys.
- 21:10Speaker 10: But you know, I wanted to, you know, finally touch
- 21:12Speaker 10: on I know we touched on Johnny a little bit,
- 21:14Speaker 10: and you know, I've interviewed Adam Fantilly and then I've
- 21:16Speaker 10: also interviewed man Giapane, and you know, we kind of
- 21:20Speaker 10: asked just about at the end of the interview, like hey, listen,
- 21:24Speaker 10: you know, Johnny's gone but not forgotten, and we just
- 21:27Speaker 10: want to know more of like a lighthearted, like a
- 21:28Speaker 10: funny story that would give a little bit of insight
- 21:30Speaker 10: into Johnny and a cool memory that you have that
- 21:33Speaker 10: you've taken with you, you know, being around him a
- 21:36Speaker 10: little bit.
- 21:37Speaker 16: Yeah, No, there's so many good stories. Only play with
- 21:40Speaker 16: him for two years, and I thought I've played with
- 21:41Speaker 16: him my whole career, from sitting across fromhim at the
- 21:44Speaker 16: card table on the plane calling everyone a.
- 21:48Speaker 8: Donkey, and.
- 21:50Speaker 16: You know what, Like my first year, he actually used
- 21:52Speaker 16: to drive me nuts because he would be the last
- 21:54Speaker 16: guy to show up to the rink and the first
- 21:56Speaker 16: guy to leave. And I was always like, like, why
- 22:00Speaker 16: is he doing this? And it was just because he
- 22:03Speaker 16: wanted to get home to his wife and kids. And
- 22:06Speaker 16: I think I've learned so much from that where now
- 22:09Speaker 16: like I don't go to the rink longer than I
- 22:10Speaker 16: have to be at the rink, yeah, And I feel
- 22:12Speaker 16: like more people should kind of take advantage of that.
- 22:16Speaker 16: Like there was times I'd sit at the rink and
- 22:18Speaker 16: be like, oh, I'm a pro, I'm just sitting here.
- 22:20Speaker 16: I'm at the rink for four hours, but I'm not
- 22:22Speaker 16: getting anything done. Yeah, And I think what I've learned
- 22:24Speaker 16: the most from john is like, go to the rank
- 22:27Speaker 16: and joy it. Be there for an hour or two
- 22:29Speaker 16: hours and do your stuff and and get what you
- 22:31Speaker 16: need to get and then get out of there, get
- 22:33Speaker 16: home and be around the ones that you love. And yeah,
- 22:36Speaker 16: I've learned. I think that's what I've learned the most
- 22:38Speaker 16: from him in that short amount of time. And honestly,
- 22:41Speaker 16: I think it's a big reason why I'm having success
- 22:43Speaker 16: this year too, is I'm not just spending hours at
- 22:45Speaker 16: the rink for no reason and thinking about hockey all
- 22:47Speaker 16: the time. And so yeah, no, I mean, he's he's
- 22:51Speaker 16: awesome and we miss him, but yeah, he's gone, never forgotten.
- 22:55Speaker 16: I love sharing stories on him and talking with the
- 22:56Speaker 16: guys about him.
- 22:58Speaker 10: That's such a cool story.
- 22:59Speaker 2: I love that. That's awesome.
- 23:00Speaker 1: It works smarter, not harder, necessarily more efficiently, and obviously
- 23:03Speaker 1: family first.
- 23:04Speaker 2: All right, it's certainly some great clips there.
- 23:05Speaker 1: We're going to take a quick time out here and
- 23:06Speaker 1: we come back some fresh new content here. Mike Canuble,
- 23:10Speaker 1: what was a fantastic career being around so many great players.
- 23:13Speaker 1: We're talking the Red Wings in the late nineties. What
- 23:15Speaker 1: kind of impact those players had on him all the
- 23:17Speaker 1: way up until playing with Wayne Gretzky the New York Rangers.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Mike Knuble is up next to an NHL inscripted after
- 23:22Speaker 1: this our special guest today, a fourth round pick seventy
- 23:37Speaker 1: six over brawl by the Detroit Red Wings and the
- 23:38Speaker 1: nineteen ninety one NHL draft.
- 23:40Speaker 2: He won the Stanley Cup with Detroit.
- 23:42Speaker 1: We're going to collect tour and seventy eight goals and
- 23:44Speaker 1: five hundred and forty eight points in over one thousand games,
- 23:47Speaker 1: one thousand and sixty eight to be specific, Red Wings, Rangers, Bruins, Flyers, Capitals.
- 23:52Speaker 2: It is Mike Knuble. Mike, great to see you, man.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Oh good, that's good to be here, guys, thanks for
- 23:56Speaker 5: having me today.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Obviously an amazing journey that you have. I want to
- 24:00Speaker 1: go to when you arrive in Detroit. You win the
- 24:01Speaker 1: Stanley Cup as a rookie and a team where your
- 24:04Speaker 1: coach is Scotti Bowman. Your teammates are Steve Agerman, Nick
- 24:06Speaker 1: litchtrom Cirgei Federalf Brendan Shanahan, Larry Murphy, Eagor, Larryana and
- 24:11Speaker 1: Slava Fatisa. How on earth did you handle all that
- 24:13Speaker 1: star power?
- 24:14Speaker 5: Yeah, that's like eight or nine Hall of Famers there, right,
- 24:16Speaker 5: And that's the difference between the teams are constructed now
- 24:19Speaker 5: and and how they wear back in the day. Could
- 24:21Speaker 5: hord players like that even better? My first game was Detroit,
- 24:25Speaker 5: Colorado when the goalies fought, you know, when Patrick Wah,
- 24:28Speaker 5: Mike Vernon, we had that big brawl, Darren McCarty, Claude Lemieux.
- 24:31Speaker 5: That was my first game. So I'm coming from Adarandack
- 24:35Speaker 5: about a year and a half in the American League,
- 24:36Speaker 5: maybe a year and two thirds in the American League,
- 24:38Speaker 5: and that's my first game. So h they had some
- 24:40Speaker 5: history from the year before Chris Draper was hit from
- 24:43Speaker 5: behind by Claude Lemieux, and then I don't know, for
- 24:48Speaker 5: some reason, they picked my night, my opening nights, to
- 24:50Speaker 5: really settle everything, and so that was my well, you
- 24:54Speaker 5: know they always say what's your welcome to the NHL moment.
- 24:56Speaker 5: I'm like, it smacked me in the face like first
- 24:58Speaker 5: first like ten minutes. So it was like, oh my god,
- 25:00Speaker 5: here we go. So it looked like an American League game,
- 25:03Speaker 5: you know, it looked like a typical American game at
- 25:05Speaker 5: that point. But you know, you didn't see that much
- 25:07Speaker 5: in the NHL anymore.
- 25:09Speaker 10: Did you have any indication coming into the locker room
- 25:12Speaker 10: that that shit was about to pop off.
- 25:14Speaker 5: You know, it was you know, I had you know,
- 25:16Speaker 5: I'm sure Ja, when you played your first game, you
- 25:19Speaker 5: got your own issues. You're like, you know, you're you're
- 25:21Speaker 5: like sitting there like what, I can't believe this is
- 25:23Speaker 5: happening right now, you know, And so I felt that
- 25:27Speaker 5: I think you felt some electricity in the building. And
- 25:29Speaker 5: then there were like a couple of fights quick, and
- 25:31Speaker 5: then I was like, okay, because they played the week
- 25:34Speaker 5: before and it was pretty quiet, and I think there
- 25:35Speaker 5: was still another game on the schedule, maybe in Colorado,
- 25:38Speaker 5: and then and then uh, Colorado went up like three
- 25:41Speaker 5: to one or four to one, and then of all
- 25:44Speaker 5: the guys, Peter Forsberg and Igor Larryanoff set it all
- 25:47Speaker 5: off in the second period and they got into it,
- 25:49Speaker 5: and then that's when the goalies came flying out and
- 25:52Speaker 5: it just went you know, and then the irony is
- 25:54Speaker 5: Darren McCarty dragged Claude Lemieux around the ice, hit his
- 25:58Speaker 5: head off the boards like really and got like a
- 26:00Speaker 5: four minute rough four minute double minor roughing and then
- 26:02Speaker 5: scored the overtime winner to win the game. To boot
- 26:04Speaker 5: like we won five four or six five or something.
- 26:07Speaker 5: So it was it was I think not only in
- 26:10Speaker 5: Detroit history, but I think in the NHL history. It's
- 26:12Speaker 5: a game a lot of people know. So I'm very
- 26:13Speaker 5: proud to have been a part of it. A small part,
- 26:15Speaker 5: got my eight minutes or whatever, but it was a
- 26:17Speaker 5: small part of it.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Well, it's amazing if all those veterans that you guys mentioned,
- 26:21Speaker 1: you know, who is the one that you felt Mike Again,
- 26:23Speaker 1: it's hard when you're coming, as you said, you're focused
- 26:25Speaker 1: on yourself.
- 26:25Speaker 2: They've got thrown issues. But was there any of those
- 26:27Speaker 2: guys you spelled specifically was healthy to you as far
- 26:30Speaker 2: as mentoring you was a memorable teammate?
- 26:32Speaker 5: Well, I think you know, you know, Steve Eisman was
- 26:35Speaker 5: a great captain at that time and for that team,
- 26:38Speaker 5: you know, having Scotty as a coach, you know, you're
- 26:40Speaker 5: just trying not to I mean, he didn't talk to
- 26:42Speaker 5: you regardless, it didn't matter, but he didn't want him
- 26:44Speaker 5: to talk to you in a negative way. Probably if
- 26:46Speaker 5: he was gonna say something's gonna be negative. But you know,
- 26:48Speaker 5: so is Steve and Brennan. And then you know you
- 26:51Speaker 5: had Slava fatisof and Igor Larryanov. So those were guys
- 26:55Speaker 5: that you know, we're we're playing in the primes and
- 27:00Speaker 5: really good players, you know. Then he had guys like
- 27:02Speaker 5: Joey Kosher, He had some secondary second tier guys, Joey Koser,
- 27:05Speaker 5: Kurt Maltby, you know, dra Broscod We were kind of
- 27:08Speaker 5: all the same age, Darren McCarty and so we were
- 27:13Speaker 5: about the same age. And so they were a little
- 27:14Speaker 5: head of me in the development path there and their
- 27:16Speaker 5: spots in Detroit, which was fine. So I think I
- 27:19Speaker 5: was just learning and watching and trying to see how
- 27:22Speaker 5: to stick there. You know, it's one thing to get there,
- 27:24Speaker 5: and then it's like, I want the career that those
- 27:26Speaker 5: guys were having, and that was it. So I mean,
- 27:29Speaker 5: I think all you had to do was look around
- 27:30Speaker 5: the room and there was tons of influences everywhere. You
- 27:33Speaker 5: could pick out guys at various levels of very talent levels,
- 27:36Speaker 5: various talent levels, and then just pick any of them
- 27:39Speaker 5: and look at them. Things were going the right way
- 27:41Speaker 5: with that group.
- 27:42Speaker 10: What was one of the greatest pieces of advice you
- 27:45Speaker 10: got from one of those veterans early on in your
- 27:47Speaker 10: career that kind of stuck with you.
- 27:49Speaker 5: Well, I don't know, I think I don't know if
- 27:52Speaker 5: it was advice, it's funny of all things. Bob Rowse,
- 27:55Speaker 5: while we were doing autographs signing, he said, you signed
- 27:58Speaker 5: your tax records with that autograph. He said, you got
- 28:00Speaker 5: to have two different autographs. That's like one thing. That
- 28:02Speaker 5: that would be like one statement, Bob Rouse, of all guys,
- 28:05Speaker 5: he said, I want to sign different autographs versus your
- 28:08Speaker 5: official documents. And I carried that with me to this day,
- 28:10Speaker 5: and I try and tell my kids that. I'm like, hey,
- 28:12Speaker 5: you know what I learned when I was a kid,
- 28:14Speaker 5: you know, when I was a young player. I'm like,
- 28:15Speaker 5: you have an autograph, and then you've got to have
- 28:17Speaker 5: like a real thing, like when you buy a house
- 28:19Speaker 5: or something. It's got to be different. And now these
- 28:21Speaker 5: days it's really easy to see these autographs. You could,
- 28:23Speaker 5: I mean you can scan them and copy them. His
- 28:25Speaker 5: harder back in the day, but that would be one
- 28:27Speaker 5: stupid I don't know why that sticks.
- 28:28Speaker 2: They get stupid smart.
- 28:33Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, So it was non hockey. It was kind
- 28:35Speaker 5: of life related more than hockey. But Bob Rowse, of
- 28:38Speaker 5: all guys, isn't that funny? I don't know. That just
- 28:39Speaker 5: popped in my head. I wasn't even ready I was
- 28:41Speaker 5: kind of like.
- 28:41Speaker 10: Well, yeah, that's so funny that that's the thing that
- 28:45Speaker 10: you go to. But I mean, I guess going back
- 28:48Speaker 10: to the you know, winning a Stanley Cup is a
- 28:50Speaker 10: rookie and being on that run. Just just talk about
- 28:53Speaker 10: that team, and you know what what separated you guys
- 28:58Speaker 10: from those other teams? You know you mentioned Scotty and
- 29:01Speaker 10: was it the X and o's or was it just
- 29:03Speaker 10: that you guys were just a tighter team than most.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think first and foremost. I mean, look,
- 29:08Speaker 5: you go up down that roster. So I got there
- 29:10Speaker 5: late ninety seven. I didn't get credit for any of that.
- 29:12Speaker 5: I didn't play at all. You know, they beat Philly,
- 29:14Speaker 5: I didn't get my name on the Cup. I made
- 29:16Speaker 5: the team. The next year, I got my name on
- 29:17Speaker 5: the Cup. So it was kind of going from from
- 29:20Speaker 5: ninety seven. You know, it was just the guys on
- 29:23Speaker 5: the team. That thing was on autopilot, you know, and
- 29:26Speaker 5: it's like once you know, I'm sure Paul Maurice could
- 29:29Speaker 5: say the same thing. He said once. I once my
- 29:31Speaker 5: team is rolling in the right direction and everybody in
- 29:33Speaker 5: the organization knows it, it's like get out of the way,
- 29:36Speaker 5: you know, you don't want to, you know, like Scotty
- 29:38Speaker 5: would tweak things, you know, and he'd poke a guy
- 29:40Speaker 5: here and there, and he'd do something, you know, just
- 29:43Speaker 5: to kind of keep the thing on the tracks. But
- 29:46Speaker 5: it was barreling down the tracks on its own. And
- 29:49Speaker 5: it was a very player led right, and so you
- 29:51Speaker 5: go through that roster, it's just so veteran led tons
- 29:54Speaker 5: of experience, NHL experience, international experience. I mean, the guys
- 29:58Speaker 5: had it all, you know, and then you know then
- 30:01Speaker 5: like Mike Vernon leaves for free agency after ninety seven,
- 30:04Speaker 5: Chris Osgood steps in and then he wins it ninety eight,
- 30:07Speaker 5: you know, and so then there was layers two of
- 30:09Speaker 5: guys that would come in and you know, I think
- 30:12Speaker 5: Brett Gil Chris came in, a guy or two, you know,
- 30:14Speaker 5: strikeing free agency, nice contracts. They leave after ninety seven
- 30:18Speaker 5: and they get a couple of guys, you know, for
- 30:20Speaker 5: the next year. And we had that tragedy with Vladimir
- 30:25Speaker 5: constantinof after the ninety seven thaying that was a big
- 30:28Speaker 5: inspiration kind of playing for him the whole year. So
- 30:33Speaker 5: it was just like one of those you know, when
- 30:34Speaker 5: the group's special, the group is special, and it's uh,
- 30:37Speaker 5: you just know it. You look around the room and
- 30:39Speaker 5: be like, man, there's some great players in here, and
- 30:41Speaker 5: it's up to us, you know, up to us to
- 30:43Speaker 5: mess this thing up or or go out and claim it.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Well, speaking of special, Mike, it's amazing your career.
- 30:49Speaker 1: You know, over a thousand games, play on all those
- 30:51Speaker 1: different teams, and we're an excellent player and we're around greatness.
- 30:54Speaker 1: As we're discussing, this is an amazing stat You're the
- 30:57Speaker 1: only player in hockey history to assist on goals by
- 31:00Speaker 1: Wayne Gretzkin Alexandrovechkin.
- 31:02Speaker 2: First off, just just chew on that for a second.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Secondly, how was it personally seeing ob break Gretzky's gold record?
- 31:08Speaker 5: Yeah, that was you know, it's kind of that that
- 31:10Speaker 5: little fact he brought up. We kind of started talking
- 31:12Speaker 5: last time, my brother and I just having beers and
- 31:14Speaker 5: just kind of you know, shooting the shit or whatever
- 31:16Speaker 5: and talking about stuff, and then I kind of took it.
- 31:19Speaker 5: I was in Washington for an alumni, huge alumni national
- 31:24Speaker 5: alumni event, you know, celebrating their fiftieth year, and talking
- 31:27Speaker 5: to a guy in the media and he said, you
- 31:28Speaker 5: know what, I'm gonna, I gotta And then he called
- 31:30Speaker 5: me like a month later and he's like, I did
- 31:32Speaker 5: some digging, like you were right, you're the only guy
- 31:34Speaker 5: that played with those two, you know, and then you
- 31:35Speaker 5: bring the point thing, you know. So it was a
- 31:38Speaker 5: lot of fun. Like when Obi was chasing this thing down,
- 31:40Speaker 5: I thought it would be Christmas maybe this year, twenty
- 31:42Speaker 5: twenty five, you know. But he, you know, he got
- 31:44Speaker 5: to get the guy. Oh my god. I mean he
- 31:46Speaker 5: went out and got he dent back into the record.
- 31:49Speaker 5: He attacked it right like he like was like a
- 31:51Speaker 5: shark and he hunted that record down. So it was
- 31:54Speaker 5: it was a lot of fun. And then it was
- 31:57Speaker 5: you know that it started to come out. I got
- 31:58Speaker 5: a little traction with that little factoid, you know. And
- 32:01Speaker 5: so I mean, I mean I was on Sports Center
- 32:03Speaker 5: for you know, I was I was on the main
- 32:06Speaker 5: sports like the real Sports Center asking me about this.
- 32:08Speaker 5: So I had my little five minutes of coketail Ov
- 32:12Speaker 5: coattail fame there maybe the early part of April. So yeah,
- 32:16Speaker 5: it was fun to watch him, and it was you know,
- 32:18Speaker 5: and just the way he was attacking it, like he
- 32:20Speaker 5: was not backing into it, like he was going for it,
- 32:23Speaker 5: and that was really fun to watch him just going
- 32:25Speaker 5: to get it and his team. The guy's really rallying
- 32:27Speaker 5: around and they I thought they did a really there's
- 32:30Speaker 5: some high pressure. You know, that's the strong kid, the center,
- 32:33Speaker 5: like you know, that's that's a lot of pressure to
- 32:36Speaker 5: be like, you know, being the main pivot on a
- 32:39Speaker 5: guy who's chasing an immortal record, right, And so I
- 32:43Speaker 5: give those guys a lot of credit really pushing him
- 32:45Speaker 5: over the top too.
- 32:47Speaker 10: Well, especially a guy that needs it in his favorite spot,
- 32:51Speaker 10: you know the majority of the time, like you got
- 32:52Speaker 10: to put it there, like and you know he had
- 32:54Speaker 10: backstrom me. It's so many guys making good past him.
- 32:56Speaker 10: But what if you know, I know you weren't in
- 32:58Speaker 10: the room with them on the chase, but you know
- 33:01Speaker 10: you played with ov and you know you've probably heard
- 33:04Speaker 10: about his development as a leader and stuff like that,
- 33:06Speaker 10: And how was it playing with him, you know when
- 33:10Speaker 10: you did, and what was some of the things that
- 33:12Speaker 10: you noticed about him that were just that we're just
- 33:14Speaker 10: the separators.
- 33:16Speaker 5: Well, he you know when I played with him, he
- 33:18Speaker 5: was he had all the international stuff, he had all
- 33:21Speaker 5: the individual stuff in the NHL, and you know his
- 33:23Speaker 5: rocketb Shard, and he was just that, you know, like
- 33:26Speaker 5: you know, really like coming into his own as a player.
- 33:29Speaker 5: And then I was you're getting kind of worried. The
- 33:31Speaker 5: year I was there, I think my first year there,
- 33:33Speaker 5: we won the President's Trophy. George mcfeed loaded us up.
- 33:36Speaker 5: We got like Jason Arnot, Scott Walker, Roman Hammer Lick,
- 33:40Speaker 5: we got some guys Scott Walker, some guys at the
- 33:43Speaker 5: dead deadline. So we had we had veteran, we had toughness,
- 33:46Speaker 5: we had young star guys moving into their becoming stars.
- 33:50Speaker 5: We had everything, and we and we and we messed
- 33:52Speaker 5: it up. And but so you're getting to this thing
- 33:55Speaker 5: you're like, well, I hope Ovi's gonna win one one day,
- 33:58Speaker 5: because you don't want to be that guy who's going
- 33:59Speaker 5: to set all these records and then not have one.
- 34:02Speaker 5: I think I think him him winning the Stanley Cup,
- 34:04Speaker 5: you know, really set that was a huge box to check,
- 34:08Speaker 5: I think personally, and then you know, everything else was
- 34:11Speaker 5: kind of gravy after that. And then he's stayed on
- 34:13Speaker 5: a heater, I mean a couple of year long heater
- 34:15Speaker 5: to get close to within a shot of Wayne's record,
- 34:18Speaker 5: and then I think he really got hungry to go
- 34:20Speaker 5: after it. So I got a real kick out of
- 34:23Speaker 5: you know, when I was there, it was like him
- 34:25Speaker 5: backs from Green like they were young, and they were
- 34:27Speaker 5: the young guns, and they were out having a good time,
- 34:29Speaker 5: and you know, you're like, you guys are good hockey
- 34:31Speaker 5: players and stuff, and you're great, you're going to be
- 34:33Speaker 5: great hockey players, and you're young and we've all been,
- 34:36Speaker 5: not necessarily me, but some of these younger guys, like,
- 34:38Speaker 5: you know, they're stars in the league, and they they
- 34:41Speaker 5: have a great time on the ice, they have a
- 34:42Speaker 5: great time off the ice, and it was really good
- 34:44Speaker 5: to see. It was really cool to see Ov like
- 34:46Speaker 5: become the family guy, you know, and even I brought
- 34:49Speaker 5: up that alumni thing we went to last fall, and
- 34:52Speaker 5: Nick Baxstrom's a father and they got kids around, so
- 34:55Speaker 5: it's pretty cool to see the evolution. And then OV
- 34:57Speaker 5: was really really enjoying celebrating with his kids and his family.
- 35:01Speaker 5: I thought that was a really cool evolution of him
- 35:04Speaker 5: being and like the consummate pro and you know, like
- 35:07Speaker 5: a hockey dad and all that and enjoying it with
- 35:09Speaker 5: his family. I thought I was very happy.
- 35:11Speaker 1: For him in that respect, no question about it. He
- 35:14Speaker 1: breaks Gretzky's record from Detroit. You went to the Rangers.
- 35:16Speaker 1: That's where you played with Gretzky as a teammate. Kenny
- 35:19Speaker 1: Albert was telling the story, you know, when Gretz is
- 35:21Speaker 1: around it because he's a great storyteller. He enjoys telling stories.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Everyone enjoys been ring wing Gretzky. The stories are legion.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Anything specific you can tell us about playing with grets.
- 35:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it was so sometimes you know, you know,
- 35:33Speaker 5: where you'd be on a bus, there's a little more
- 35:34Speaker 5: busting around these coats. He might bust to Jersey, you know,
- 35:36Speaker 5: the bus to the island, so you're on the bus
- 35:38Speaker 5: a little bit, you know, when you're playing with the Rangers,
- 35:40Speaker 5: even come back from an airport or something. And then
- 35:43Speaker 5: he would just hold court in the back, you know.
- 35:46Speaker 5: And as the teaking in, you know, we had John
- 35:48Speaker 5: Muckler who was coaching there, McTavish, Hodey teaking in, Adam Graves,
- 35:54Speaker 5: gretz booka boom, So there was this huge like Edmonton
- 35:57Speaker 5: connection right from back in the mid eighties. And then
- 36:00Speaker 5: you know, just Gretz would hold he would sit in
- 36:02Speaker 5: the back and Kevin Stevens would get him going, you know,
- 36:05Speaker 5: and then guys like that, he just they just tell stories.
- 36:07Speaker 5: Dave Simenko and you know, he thought he was a
- 36:09Speaker 5: really good player, and it's you know, he was this
- 36:11Speaker 5: big policeman for a long time. And talk about Marty McSorley, uh,
- 36:15Speaker 5: you know, and just the guys that he played with there,
- 36:17Speaker 5: and he just just how much he revered those guys
- 36:20Speaker 5: and how happy you know those times were in Edmonton,
- 36:23Speaker 5: and how much you know they were young guys and
- 36:26Speaker 5: and and and just the name dropping and you just
- 36:29Speaker 5: so as a young player, you know, you're pushed up
- 36:30Speaker 5: towards the front of the bus, but you know you're
- 36:32Speaker 5: constantly like turning backwards trying to you know, if there's
- 36:35Speaker 5: an empty seat, maybe a roll or two behind. He
- 36:37Speaker 5: kind of say, hey, can I sit right here? He's talking.
- 36:38Speaker 5: I'm gonna listen to him talk a little bit. So,
- 36:41Speaker 5: you know, he just give him a couple of beers.
- 36:42Speaker 5: And it's funny he was endorsing one type of beer
- 36:45Speaker 5: but really didn't like it, so he'd always have the
- 36:46Speaker 5: other kind of beer there. Then he'd be drinking those.
- 36:49Speaker 5: So I'm not gonna tell names or anything, because I
- 36:51Speaker 5: do remember which ones it was, but but he was like,
- 36:54Speaker 5: you know, he kind of uh, you know, it was
- 36:56Speaker 5: just great man. It was like storytime regrets on the
- 36:58Speaker 5: back of the bus. It was just priceless. And he
- 37:00Speaker 5: could speak freely. You know, he knew his role in
- 37:02Speaker 5: the public and how he had to talk. But that
- 37:04Speaker 5: need to speak a lot freer, you know, amongst the guys,
- 37:06Speaker 5: which is great.
- 37:07Speaker 10: Talk about the kids. And I know you got some
- 37:09Speaker 10: athletes in the family.
- 37:10Speaker 5: Now, yeah, our oldest Cam won a national title there
- 37:14Speaker 5: at Western Michigan, did a five year thing. We worked
- 37:18Speaker 5: on his masters. Was a real plugger, like not a
- 37:21Speaker 5: ton of love, like not a big time score in
- 37:23Speaker 5: on the lineup, and then chose to go back for
- 37:25Speaker 5: a fifth year to work on his NBA start as masters,
- 37:28Speaker 5: and then was named an assistant captain and really anchored
- 37:32Speaker 5: their fourth line. Their line scored I think the game winner.
- 37:35Speaker 5: I think they got the game winner. He assisted on
- 37:37Speaker 5: the game winning goal. And in Saint Louis they BEATBU
- 37:40Speaker 5: in the final, and they had a real nice team
- 37:43Speaker 5: the second half of the year. They would just you know,
- 37:44Speaker 5: you know what it is, it's everybody's doing their job.
- 37:47Speaker 5: You getting great goaltending scorers are scoring. Defenders are defending.
- 37:51Speaker 5: Sometimes at a one game series though, you can get
- 37:53Speaker 5: that weird bounce and something hits a skate and screws you.
- 37:56Speaker 5: You know, you play best of five. Usually the best
- 37:58Speaker 5: team will kind of come to the top a little bit.
- 38:00Speaker 5: But but they were. They got through and need a
- 38:02Speaker 5: great He's sorting through some pro options, probably be East
- 38:05Speaker 5: Coast level or something like that, and he's doing that.
- 38:07Speaker 5: I have a daughter. We just moved. He could be
- 38:08Speaker 5: a second grade teacher in Chicago, which is a lot
- 38:11Speaker 5: of fun. We just moved to Chicago. And then our
- 38:13Speaker 5: younger guy, Cole is at Notre Dame. He's a Flyers
- 38:17Speaker 5: draft pick. Just got back from development camp and had
- 38:20Speaker 5: a nice second year of there. He's about to enter
- 38:22Speaker 5: his third year and really enjoys it down there. And that's,
- 38:25Speaker 5: you know, like two hours from us. So it's been
- 38:27Speaker 5: a lot. Every weekend, I'm pretty much on a college campus,
- 38:30Speaker 5: which is a lot of fun too.
- 38:31Speaker 2: You know.
- 38:31Speaker 5: See it all takes you back to the day.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Yeah, is that does it?
- 38:38Speaker 10: Did you ever have any thoughts, you know, being a
- 38:40Speaker 10: Michigan of having the kids be a legacy or it
- 38:44Speaker 10: was kind of you wanted them to kind of choose
- 38:45Speaker 10: their own route.
- 38:46Speaker 5: Yeah, no, it's you know, and things work, things work
- 38:50Speaker 5: out the way it was like Cam was originally in
- 38:51Speaker 5: Michigan State and then you know, then you know, sometimes
- 38:55Speaker 5: things don't work out as well as they should. And
- 38:57Speaker 5: he went to then exchanged to Western uh and then
- 39:00Speaker 5: Cole you know, he was in a different spot, like
- 39:02Speaker 5: he was a big time score in the usah all,
- 39:04Speaker 5: you know, and National Junior Player of the Year. So
- 39:07Speaker 5: I had too on two different paths and he was
- 39:10Speaker 5: lucky he had. He had basically could have gone anywhere
- 39:13Speaker 5: that he wanted to go. And so he's a smart kid.
- 39:17Speaker 5: I think sometimes at Notre to Aim it's like no
- 39:19Speaker 5: joke and he probably you know, he's probably shaking his
- 39:21Speaker 5: head like this is no joke here. You know, there's
- 39:23Speaker 5: no place to hide. But we're very very proud of
- 39:27Speaker 5: that and that he wanted to go there and and
- 39:30Speaker 5: that experience there. So that's something that'll stay with him forever.
- 39:33Speaker 5: So it's you know, any play and you know, he
- 39:37Speaker 5: got to play for Jeff Jackson there who stepped down.
- 39:40Speaker 5: Now brock Sheen, his younger guy is going to take over.
- 39:42Speaker 5: So it's kind of a new generation, so he gets
- 39:43Speaker 5: to lift through that too, or a new era. So
- 39:46Speaker 5: I know he's really looking forward to that.
- 39:49Speaker 10: Talk about your days at Michigan and do you get
- 39:51Speaker 10: a favorite Red Bearnson story.
- 39:54Speaker 5: Well, there's a lot of them. Red Red was like,
- 39:58Speaker 5: you know, he was like a pro coach. He'd come
- 40:00Speaker 5: from Saint Louis. He took over a floundering program in
- 40:03Speaker 5: the late eighties where they were kind of a joke
- 40:05Speaker 5: on campus and kind of straighten them out. So by
- 40:07Speaker 5: the time we got there in the early nineties, he
- 40:12Speaker 5: had the ship going in the right direction. A ton
- 40:14Speaker 5: of guys end up playing the NHL. Coming through. There
- 40:16Speaker 5: are a couple of classes in front of me, to
- 40:17Speaker 5: the couple classes behind me. Brendan Morrison won a heisman
- 40:20Speaker 5: or I mean a heisman Hobe Baker. There they won
- 40:23Speaker 5: a national championship after I left. I mean Red Red
- 40:27Speaker 5: just the story, I mean, he's just the he's so
- 40:32Speaker 5: he was so stoic, you know, and so like a
- 40:34Speaker 5: guy you didn't want to let down, you know, the
- 40:37Speaker 5: stories wise, I mean, just the way he talked to
- 40:40Speaker 5: players and just telling an older guy if I could
- 40:44Speaker 5: trade you, you know, like he's like if I could
- 40:45Speaker 5: trade you. I trade you, right, you know, fucking now
- 40:48Speaker 5: and stuff like that. So and I and he met
- 40:50Speaker 5: it with love. He's like, I love you, but I
- 40:52Speaker 5: wish I could trade you. But you know what I mean.
- 40:54Speaker 5: Like in college, they had to. You know, you knew
- 40:57Speaker 5: the kids couldn't go anywhere. You're stuck with each other.
- 40:59Speaker 5: You're stuck with each other back in the day. So
- 41:01Speaker 5: if you didn't like a guy, you had no choice
- 41:02Speaker 5: but to either play him, said him, or to all
- 41:04Speaker 5: of them. And so you know, now it's easy for
- 41:07Speaker 5: everybody to leave and do that. But I'm sure Red
- 41:11Speaker 5: would you know, some of these coaches who are used
- 41:14Speaker 5: to it a certain way probably don't love this nil
- 41:17Speaker 5: stuff and probably don't love the fact that the you
- 41:20Speaker 5: know that as soon as it gets hard a player,
- 41:23Speaker 5: a player can leave, you know, and and so it's, uh,
- 41:28Speaker 5: I'm sure he wouldn't be thrilled like coaching. Uh, you know,
- 41:31Speaker 5: with all this nil and basically everybody's on restricted free
- 41:34Speaker 5: agent every year.
- 41:35Speaker 10: What what do you make of the HL you know,
- 41:38Speaker 10: the the new rule where you know, kids can kind
- 41:41Speaker 10: of bounce in between and they don't lose eligibility. Do
- 41:43Speaker 10: you find that you think that's gonna be a positive
- 41:45Speaker 10: thing or or you know, how do you foresee that
- 41:48Speaker 10: kind of moving forward.
- 41:49Speaker 5: I think it's gonna be really interesting. I think it's
- 41:51Speaker 5: gonna be a couple of years before everybody figures out
- 41:57Speaker 5: how many of these guys, how many guys you can
- 41:58Speaker 5: take if guys are ready. I know a lot of
- 42:01Speaker 5: guys I played with in major junior that kind of
- 42:03Speaker 5: quit school in tenth grade. There might be a few
- 42:05Speaker 5: kids now who like kind of a man, I really
- 42:08Speaker 5: screwed off in high school and now it's gonna I
- 42:10Speaker 5: really love to go to college, but it's kind of
- 42:11Speaker 5: biting me in the ass. And certain schools have are
- 42:14Speaker 5: still super high like acceptance terms, you know, and they
- 42:18Speaker 5: can cut some corners to get you in, but at
- 42:21Speaker 5: the end of the day, you've got to be eligible.
- 42:23Speaker 5: I think what Penn State pulled off yesterday or the
- 42:26Speaker 5: other day, you getting adding the shafer kid, you know
- 42:29Speaker 5: with the nil and getting them to come to college
- 42:31Speaker 5: route like Macklin Celebrini. So now you have the high
- 42:35Speaker 5: high you're not getting like mid to early first rounders.
- 42:38Speaker 5: You're getting the top picks for going junior to come there.
- 42:42Speaker 5: And so the CHL has got to be like, this
- 42:44Speaker 5: isn't you know, this isn't great either. And I know
- 42:48Speaker 5: some higher picks who haven't signed NHL deals are saying, well,
- 42:51Speaker 5: do I go back? Do I have a chance to
- 42:52Speaker 5: make the NHL. If I have a chance to make
- 42:55Speaker 5: the NHL roster, do I sign an entry level deal?
- 42:58Speaker 5: Or if I'm close, do I just do a year
- 43:00Speaker 5: college and then go for it the next year?
- 43:02Speaker 7: You know?
- 43:02Speaker 5: And so I think it adds It adds a lot
- 43:05Speaker 5: of questions in there. And then you know, if a
- 43:08Speaker 5: kid comes out of the college route as an eighteen
- 43:12Speaker 5: year old, and then do you send them if you
- 43:14Speaker 5: are they American League eligible? Now they don't have to
- 43:16Speaker 5: go back to junior because they're going out of college.
- 43:18Speaker 5: If they want to sign, say Christmas or something. There's
- 43:20Speaker 5: so many variables still, and then it's it's crazy, but
- 43:24Speaker 5: I think it'd take a couple years to really shake out.
- 43:25Speaker 1: I didn't want to ask you with the capitals. You
- 43:27Speaker 1: had dental surgery on camera part of HBO's Oh yeah,
- 43:32Speaker 1: what was that experience?
- 43:33Speaker 5: Like, well, I think it started in Atlanta. We're playing
- 43:37Speaker 5: down in Atlanta and I'm standing next to the left
- 43:38Speaker 5: post or something. I'm on the ice. Eric Fair, one
- 43:41Speaker 5: of the younger guy, you know, he's a first round er,
- 43:44Speaker 5: takes like a bad angle shot, like no chance of
- 43:47Speaker 5: going in, and it's just like I'm standing there and
- 43:49Speaker 5: it hits me in the chin, you know, and it
- 43:50Speaker 5: kind of knocks on my teeth, and I'm like, ah,
- 43:52Speaker 5: you know, I was like son of a you know, like,
- 43:54Speaker 5: I'm like, you have no chance that shot. That shot
- 43:57Speaker 5: has no chance going in. You got to shoot it
- 43:58Speaker 5: head high, you know, and it hits me right in
- 44:00Speaker 5: the face. So anyway, they bracking me together in Atlanta.
- 44:03Speaker 5: I remember the doctor went to Mesi and I went
- 44:04Speaker 5: to Michigan. So I got my mouth open. He's bracketing
- 44:07Speaker 5: me up talking about Michigan. I'm like, uh huh, uh huh,
- 44:10Speaker 5: you know. But so yeah, so anyway, they you know,
- 44:13Speaker 5: I go back and they put a plate in down here,
- 44:15Speaker 5: they cut down, they put a plate in, and then
- 44:17Speaker 5: I was all wired together. I think maybe that clip
- 44:19Speaker 5: I was going to get him off or something, or
- 44:21Speaker 5: they were looking at him or going to get these
- 44:23Speaker 5: brackets off. And yeah, I mean it's good filler for
- 44:27Speaker 5: the show. It's kind of interesting obviously, shows what the
- 44:29Speaker 5: players go through a little bit and and you know,
- 44:32Speaker 5: nobody likes being the dentist chair anyway, not even for
- 44:34Speaker 5: a cavity. But then he get all these brackets taken
- 44:36Speaker 5: off and see see if your chin's broken or not anymore.
- 44:39Speaker 5: It was, uh, it was good filler and and uh yeah,
- 44:42Speaker 5: the show was a lot of fun. I think it
- 44:44Speaker 5: was a really good time. I think like we stunk,
- 44:47Speaker 5: We're at the bottom, and then like we were going
- 44:49Speaker 5: like this and then Pittsburgh was already on top and
- 44:52Speaker 5: coming then we met in the middle. It was it
- 44:53Speaker 5: was it was a really good show. I'd have to
- 44:55Speaker 5: watch it again. But Bruce got famous for his f bumps,
- 44:58Speaker 5: you know, you know all the one which, yeah, people
- 45:01Speaker 5: ask about it. I'm going he wasn't even mad. He
- 45:03Speaker 5: was just using it like very. He's just like, come on,
- 45:05Speaker 5: like just very guy. You always just using you know,
- 45:08Speaker 5: the fuck is very you know, And I said, we
- 45:10Speaker 5: all use it like that, so it's it's it wasn't
- 45:13Speaker 5: even that mad. He was just kind of encouraging us.
- 45:15Speaker 5: It wasn't that bad.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Exactly, but in the positive way. Yeah, last one for me.
- 45:20Speaker 1: Joe Thornton, what kind of team it was? He like
- 45:22Speaker 1: relationship there in Boston.
- 45:23Speaker 5: Yeah, Joe, Joe always hold dear to me. Because I
- 45:27Speaker 5: got to Boston, I was kind of a third line plugger.
- 45:31Speaker 5: He was playing with Glenn Murray and Sergey Sampson Off.
- 45:33Speaker 5: Sergey Samson off ended up breaking his wrist or something.
- 45:36Speaker 5: They auditioned everybody every forward and they finally got to
- 45:39Speaker 5: me and I ended up clicking with those two, and
- 45:42Speaker 5: Joe and Glad changed my career. So Joe Thornton has
- 45:45Speaker 5: a spot in my heart for till the day till
- 45:48Speaker 5: the day I die. He and Glenn because they gave
- 45:50Speaker 5: me about ten more years in the league. So happy
- 45:53Speaker 5: that he got elected to the Hall of Fame. It
- 45:55Speaker 5: certainly deserved. So Joe was really coming to his own.
- 45:58Speaker 5: I think he had his first one hundred point year
- 46:00Speaker 5: maybe when I was there and he was you could
- 46:03Speaker 5: tell he was gonna be a star, uh for the
- 46:05Speaker 5: next fifteen years and h his his Uh, Jayson, I'm
- 46:09Speaker 5: sure you know Joe never has a bad day. I
- 46:11Speaker 5: don't know if he's ever had a bad day in
- 46:12Speaker 5: his life.
- 46:13Speaker 15: Uh.
- 46:13Speaker 5: Even you could have lost ten in a row. Walk
- 46:15Speaker 5: in the rink. What's up byce, Hey, how are we doing,
- 46:18Speaker 5: you know, and God bless him for that. I mean,
- 46:21Speaker 5: he's just a fantastic human and I respect like he's
- 46:23Speaker 5: just you know, just a guy's guy, a great teammate
- 46:26Speaker 5: and uh, I mean anybody who's met on me. I mean,
- 46:30Speaker 5: he's just an engaging he's always smiled, always happy, like
- 46:32Speaker 5: you said, never had a bad never a bad day, Joe.
- 46:35Speaker 5: You know, no bad day, Joe. That's I mean, it's
- 46:37Speaker 5: it's great, he's uh, it's it's more of us should
- 46:41Speaker 5: have his attitude for sure.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Yeah, enviable way to live, no question.
- 46:45Speaker 1: But Mike Nibble a terrific career in the NHL over
- 46:48Speaker 1: a thousand games.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Obviously, stories for days is Stanley Cup champion, Mike. This
- 46:51Speaker 2: was awesome, man. I can't thank you enough.
- 46:53Speaker 5: Well, thank you, guys. I appreciate it, and uh, anytime
- 46:55Speaker 5: you want to have you back, I'd love to chit
- 46:57Speaker 5: chat again.
- 47:05Speaker 1: All right, So, lots of great clips you've had here today,
- 47:07Speaker 1: And honestly, we have hockey players and of course these
- 47:10Speaker 1: guys are fantastic, whether it's titles, trafole or whomever talking
- 47:14Speaker 1: about their career as it's going on right now. But
- 47:15Speaker 1: I think it's also pretty entertaining as we have the
- 47:17Speaker 1: non hockey people. And Michael Rosenbaum, friend of Jason Demurs,
- 47:21Speaker 1: is absolutely fantastic.
- 47:22Speaker 2: He's an avid hockey fan.
- 47:24Speaker 1: I need a great story about a celebrity game and
- 47:26Speaker 1: Al Michaels showing a different side of himself.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Do you believe in miracles?
- 47:30Speaker 8: Why?
- 47:30Speaker 2: I believe in a very profane Al Michaels. Take a listen.
- 47:33Speaker 7: I love hockey.
- 47:34Speaker 10: I just got to play in a charity game.
- 47:35Speaker 1: For LAFT charity Hockey event Crypto dot com. How incredible
- 47:40Speaker 1: was that, Mike?
- 47:41Speaker 18: That was I mean, doing it for a good cause
- 47:44Speaker 18: was just incredible. But then you know my line is
- 47:49Speaker 18: MSA is centering us, THEO Fleury is on my left wing.
- 47:54Speaker 18: And it was just and it was packed and I
- 47:56Speaker 18: felt when I went out there, I just said, don't
- 47:58Speaker 18: fall down, man, don't fall down and looks getting asshole
- 48:01Speaker 18: in front of all your friends and all these people
- 48:03Speaker 18: who go, oh oh yeah, you said you played hockey.
- 48:06Speaker 18: And the first shift man THEO to mess to me
- 48:12Speaker 18: one time we're in and I was like, that's it,
- 48:15Speaker 18: I can go home now.
- 48:16Speaker 7: I just it was it was awesome.
- 48:18Speaker 5: It was awesome, how great?
- 48:20Speaker 10: How like you know, you play with those guys and
- 48:22Speaker 10: I always I always try to tell people like you know,
- 48:25Speaker 10: Messy and Flurry and you think like, oh, yeah, they
- 48:27Speaker 10: might take it easy, and you just see them. The
- 48:30Speaker 10: compete level and the level of edge that these guys have,
- 48:33Speaker 10: it's just so incredible to see live in person and
- 48:35Speaker 10: even play with them.
- 48:37Speaker 7: Yeah, it was.
- 48:38Speaker 18: It was unbelievable.
- 48:39Speaker 9: You know.
- 48:39Speaker 18: It's funny because you know, mess was like, oh, I
- 48:41Speaker 18: haven't played forever, and he gets on there and he's
- 48:43Speaker 18: just like, hey, make sure you're in the slot, make
- 48:46Speaker 18: you know, and he's like he's he's having fun. But
- 48:48Speaker 18: at the same time, he's like, you know, I don't
- 48:50Speaker 18: I don't want to come out here and look like idiots.
- 48:52Speaker 18: Let's let's go out there and score some goals. And
- 48:55Speaker 18: it was a blast. It was I mean, you know,
- 48:57Speaker 18: to be on a airing on TV and scoring a
- 49:00Speaker 18: goal as an actor, you know, like guy who always
- 49:03Speaker 18: wanted to play hockey and these guys like you.
- 49:06Speaker 2: It was it was just my moment to like just
- 49:09Speaker 2: be like all.
- 49:09Speaker 7: Right, hey, you know, I got I got a little game.
- 49:11Speaker 1: I got a little no I did a little more
- 49:14Speaker 1: to get in the game like this. You gotta have
- 49:15Speaker 1: more than just a little bit of a game. Who was
- 49:16Speaker 1: your favorite person to me at the event, Dave de Vito,
- 49:19Speaker 1: Vince Vaughn.
- 49:21Speaker 18: You know, I was more star struck by al Michaels.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Yes, do you believe in miracles?
- 49:27Speaker 18: Al Michaels was our coach and he got in the
- 49:30Speaker 18: in that room, it was just like he was.
- 49:32Speaker 2: He was like Herb Brooks.
- 49:34Speaker 18: He was given, he was, he was channeling Herb Brooks
- 49:37Speaker 18: and he was like, get the fuck out there, and
- 49:40Speaker 18: you know, just Amy he.
- 49:41Speaker 5: Was throwing f bombs and no he wasn't.
- 49:44Speaker 18: He was. I got it on video.
- 49:53Speaker 8: I have it.
- 49:54Speaker 18: I'll have to look, but I I have him saying
- 49:56Speaker 18: that like I was. I was surprised the cameras are
- 49:58Speaker 18: on him. I'm like, well, they're not gonna air this,
- 49:59Speaker 18: but this is. And Danny DeVito and al Michaels sat
- 50:04Speaker 18: right from my, uh where I was sitting in the
- 50:06Speaker 18: locker room, and I just shot the shit with them
- 50:09Speaker 18: for like forty five minutes. They were just awesome. Me
- 50:13Speaker 18: and Danny DeVito were stretching. Who showed me the right
- 50:15Speaker 18: way to stretch? I'm like, come on, you.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Stretch all those jersey Mike commercials, Jordan Martin hook the
- 50:23Speaker 1: Carolina Hurricanes joining us right now, and I'm gonna let
- 50:26Speaker 1: Jad take over the second here, but Jordan joining us
- 50:28Speaker 1: along with his lovely son Chase, which is a classic
- 50:30Speaker 1: move here just bring the sun on. So now we
- 50:32Speaker 1: definitely can't ask anything hard hitting, nothing incriminating.
- 50:35Speaker 10: I mean, one guy that you probably all want to
- 50:38Speaker 10: win for is not only Stallzy, but you know Brent Burns,
- 50:42Speaker 10: who's been around for so long, and I mean a
- 50:45Speaker 10: lot of people have heard stories about him and I
- 50:47Speaker 10: haven't been played with him in a while, but you know,
- 50:49Speaker 10: I have my stories of him of like, you know,
- 50:51Speaker 10: him getting bit by a cheetah and then getting a
- 50:53Speaker 10: tattoo of it, But like, has anything happened just in
- 50:56Speaker 10: terms of like his preparation and how wild he is
- 50:59Speaker 10: because he does some some stuff that's just so zany
- 51:02Speaker 10: and out there. And anything you've seen or that he's
- 51:05Speaker 10: added that I haven't seen when I played with.
- 51:07Speaker 17: Him, well, I don't know if he was doing the
- 51:10Speaker 17: like was he doing the coffee you were with him? No,
- 51:14Speaker 17: He's got like his blender that he blends his coffee
- 51:17Speaker 17: and brings all his coffee and his beans and all that,
- 51:20Speaker 17: like that's in one of his He's got like six
- 51:22Speaker 17: suitcases for a one game trip. Like he takes care
- 51:27Speaker 17: of himself obviously to be able to play this long
- 51:30Speaker 17: you got, you got to take care of yourself. But
- 51:31Speaker 17: he's got every machine known to man on him at
- 51:35Speaker 17: all times. And yeah, he's he's each thirty five ounces
- 51:42Speaker 17: of fake usually the night before a game. And yeah,
- 51:46Speaker 17: he's he's one of a kind. And like you said,
- 51:49Speaker 17: that's probably the number one guy that what we want
- 51:51Speaker 17: to win for and he's been around for so long
- 51:55Speaker 17: and it's never won one. So yeah, he's he's the cheatah.
- 52:00Speaker 17: Story is incredible though, and I love that you were
- 52:03Speaker 17: on his team when that happened.
- 52:04Speaker 10: Oh yeah, he went to a zoo to go get
- 52:07Speaker 10: like a private tour. I can't remember where what zoo
- 52:10Speaker 10: And then he went into the cheat exhibit and they said, hey,
- 52:14Speaker 10: just you know, be careful, you know, don't you know,
- 52:17Speaker 10: get too ornery around the cheetah, And he did and
- 52:20Speaker 10: moved a little too quick, and the cheetah took a
- 52:22Speaker 10: piece out of him, right out of his ribs. And
- 52:24Speaker 10: he came into the ring the next day with tell
- 52:26Speaker 10: happy he's I got a bit by a cheetah. He's like,
- 52:28Speaker 10: it's actually pretty bad ass. I'm gonna get a tattoo.
- 52:31Speaker 10: But he's got a tattoo in his ribs of it.
- 52:33Speaker 10: And it's like, that's just the stuff he did. I mean,
- 52:36Speaker 10: he had his own owlery when he was in Minnesota
- 52:39Speaker 10: and all sorts of things like that. But you know,
- 52:42Speaker 10: switching gears a bit, and you guys are coming down
- 52:44Speaker 10: that stretch for coming into Four Nations and then the
- 52:47Speaker 10: break and everything, and we talk about guys. We talked
- 52:51Speaker 10: about a last episode of Guys going on Break where
- 52:53Speaker 10: they go and obviously we had some great times. And
- 52:56Speaker 10: I told you I was bringing this story of up
- 52:58Speaker 10: of us going to Cabbo for probably one of the
- 53:00Speaker 10: most legendary trips that was highlighted by a picture with
- 53:05Speaker 10: you and Kyle Busch that I wish I still had.
- 53:08Speaker 10: But we almost got a restraining order on us by
- 53:11Speaker 10: Kyle Busch because we were annoying him.
- 53:15Speaker 5: It was on me, it.
- 53:17Speaker 10: Was but listen, we're all in it together.
- 53:20Speaker 2: We're we're you know, we're we're.
- 53:21Speaker 17: Oh, you guys are hagging me on too. That was
- 53:23Speaker 17: the worst part. We had a few Tequilas on the
- 53:27Speaker 17: golf course and then came back and I'm not a
- 53:29Speaker 17: huge NASCAR fan, but a fairly big NASCAR fan, and
- 53:33Speaker 17: I was like, oh, I recognize that guy, and then
- 53:35Speaker 17: I put one and two together and it was Kyle Busch.
- 53:39Speaker 17: So then I go over and tried to speak out
- 53:42Speaker 17: my ass that I knew everything about NASCAR and.
- 53:46Speaker 5: Just wouldn't let him go.
- 53:47Speaker 17: He's there with his wife and his kids, and he
- 53:49Speaker 17: just wanted to have a good time with his family
- 53:51Speaker 17: and we're belligerently bullying him about NASCAR and.
- 53:56Speaker 5: Maybe body part of it.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Well, are you a pro athlete?
- 54:02Speaker 17: Our NASCAR drivers athletes?
- 54:04Speaker 5: So I better be careful.
- 54:05Speaker 17: I'm I'm supposed to go to a race and one
- 54:08Speaker 17: of the guys is hooking me up, so I'm very
- 54:10Speaker 17: be careful.
- 54:10Speaker 5: Saying that he was.
- 54:12Speaker 1: The pride of Porcupine playing Saskatchwan Kelly Chase Chaser.
- 54:16Speaker 2: It is great to see how are my friend.
- 54:18Speaker 7: I'm doing great. I'm doing great.
- 54:19Speaker 19: You know the amount of times you guys changed this
- 54:22Speaker 19: podcast and everything I thought I was going on with
- 54:23Speaker 19: two Hall of Famers, you guys were doing I'm like,
- 54:26Speaker 19: who are these guys anyway.
- 54:29Speaker 10: You you I read a story about you and Brett
- 54:33Speaker 10: Hall stealing Bob Berry's car. Oh yeah, his Jaguar.
- 54:37Speaker 19: Yeah yeah, we uh well he we went to the
- 54:41Speaker 19: game one night and I came to the game with Shanahan.
- 54:43Speaker 19: I lived with Brendan and HALLI asked me for going
- 54:47Speaker 19: out after and or you know, we're going to ride together.
- 54:50Speaker 7: I said sure.
- 54:51Speaker 19: So I went up to the offices where he cut
- 54:53Speaker 19: out of the rink all the time. He went in
- 54:54Speaker 19: a different exit out of the rink, and he said,
- 54:57Speaker 19: where'd you park? And I said, I have a car.
- 55:00Speaker 19: What do you mean a car? I said, I'm in
- 55:02Speaker 19: a car, he said, so he said I'll be right back.
- 55:05Speaker 19: So he comes back and he's got the keys to
- 55:11Speaker 19: a car. We go out to the parking lot and
- 55:14Speaker 19: he goes, come on, let's go, and he jumps in
- 55:16Speaker 19: Bob Berry's Jay. So I get in the jag and
- 55:19Speaker 19: him and Bob were kind of close. So, I mean,
- 55:21Speaker 19: I don't know. I mean, I don't think he's stealing
- 55:24Speaker 19: the thing. I just figure, you know, he's just talk
- 55:28Speaker 19: to Bob and whatever the deal they made. He's got
- 55:31Speaker 19: a car. So I get in the car. We go
- 55:33Speaker 19: down down to the landing and.
- 55:36Speaker 7: Mixing.
- 55:36Speaker 12: You know.
- 55:37Speaker 19: It's you know, two am, and we're not done. So
- 55:39Speaker 19: we go to the east Side. We're going to go
- 55:40Speaker 19: to Pops. It's twenty four hours joint. So we get
- 55:43Speaker 19: over the Pops and it's like it's the lowest form
- 55:47Speaker 19: of life. It's it's basically it's everybody that shouldn't be
- 55:50Speaker 19: out that is still out.
- 55:51Speaker 7: Like it's just it's just in place that you just
- 55:54Speaker 7: shake your head. You're like, what the hell.
- 55:56Speaker 19: And it's a mixture of guys in suits to people
- 56:00Speaker 19: living on the street in this place, you know. And
- 56:02Speaker 19: it's now it's like four point thirty in the morning,
- 56:05Speaker 19: and I'm like, dude, we got to go, Like, we
- 56:07Speaker 19: got to get out of here.
- 56:08Speaker 7: We got practice in the morning. So he throws me
- 56:11Speaker 7: the keys.
- 56:13Speaker 19: I get out in the parking lot and I'm having
- 56:15Speaker 19: trouble with the lock and I'm jiggling it around and
- 56:18Speaker 19: the key snaps in the door lock.
- 56:20Speaker 7: Now we got Bob Barry's Jaguar.
- 56:22Speaker 19: It isn't like we you know, we got some rental
- 56:26Speaker 19: car that we could just leave over in East Saint Louis.
- 56:28Speaker 7: Like, there's no way you leave the jag over there
- 56:30Speaker 7: and it's not on blocks.
- 56:31Speaker 2: When we get back, we go we.
- 56:35Speaker 19: Go to the security and we finally convinced some guy
- 56:38Speaker 19: at security that he needs to let us in and
- 56:42Speaker 19: and and get over with the door locks and he
- 56:44Speaker 19: needs to make this key. So the guy doesn't believe
- 56:47Speaker 19: it's Bread Hall. Fine, you know, no cell phone, so
- 56:49Speaker 19: we're calling from the desk in the security office at Pops,
- 56:52Speaker 19: which is again these guys are some rugged customers, right yea.
- 56:57Speaker 19: Polly's then holding court out in the parking lot. He's
- 56:59Speaker 19: got a burning barrel going burning whatever is in the
- 57:03Speaker 19: burning barrel, and he's got cases of beer and he's
- 57:06Speaker 19: telling stories and these people are sitting there like they're
- 57:09Speaker 19: having storytime with Brett Hall. The sun's starting to come up.
- 57:12Speaker 19: This guy's making keys. I'm like, this is a disaster.
- 57:15Speaker 19: And he promises that he's gonna get everybody at breakfast
- 57:20Speaker 19: at eat Right, which is just across the river into
- 57:22Speaker 19: Saint Louis, into Missouri, and it's his famous place. It's
- 57:26Speaker 19: just a little it's about the size of my hospital room.
- 57:29Speaker 19: But he's gonna buy everyone breakfast. So I'm like, just
- 57:34Speaker 19: shut up already, and he's like, who cares, don't worry.
- 57:37Speaker 7: About it, you know.
- 57:39Speaker 19: So pretty soon they got the door lock unlocked. They
- 57:43Speaker 19: get the door the key made. We get into Bob's car.
- 57:46Speaker 19: We're driving across pull in. I'm like, Holly, we're not
- 57:49Speaker 19: stopping it, eat right. He goes, of course we are.
- 57:52Speaker 19: So we pull in and all of these people, I mean,
- 57:55Speaker 19: guys that are bartender, security, lawyers, that have had a
- 58:00Speaker 19: big night, strippers, you name it. Every form of life
- 58:05Speaker 19: is at the eat right, okay, And it is just
- 58:08Speaker 19: like people are walking. I'm like Jesus, and he's just like,
- 58:11Speaker 19: whatever they want, and he just Harter. This guy's the
- 58:15Speaker 19: shorter chef, cooking way, cooking away, cooking away. Everybody's getting fed.
- 58:19Speaker 19: Next thing, you know, Holly's inviting him to practice. I'm like, Holley,
- 58:23Speaker 19: that's inviding everybody to the rink to practice. So we
- 58:27Speaker 19: practice up Brent with ice rink and we come in
- 58:30Speaker 19: and we're there before everybody, and I just want to
- 58:33Speaker 19: get in and get out of my suit because it's
- 58:35Speaker 19: the suit I wore the night before and I don't
- 58:36Speaker 19: want the coaches to see me. And Holly just walks
- 58:40Speaker 19: in could care less walks right in the coach's office
- 58:43Speaker 19: and throws the keys on Bob Barry's desk, and Bob
- 58:46Speaker 19: Barry goes batshit crazy. He's reported his car stolen. He's
- 58:52Speaker 19: going nuts. I can hear him yelling. All I want
- 58:55Speaker 19: to do is get out of my fucking suit and
- 58:56Speaker 19: get into my underwear. Okay, just not have him see
- 59:00Speaker 19: me in but in this suit. And he comes around
- 59:03Speaker 19: the corner and he sees me just getting out of
- 59:04Speaker 19: my dress pants.
- 59:06Speaker 7: He looks and goes you.
- 59:08Speaker 19: You, of all fucking guys, you're not good enough to
- 59:11Speaker 19: hang around with him.
- 59:12Speaker 7: I'll fucking send you to the miners. I don't know
- 59:14Speaker 7: who you think you are.
- 59:16Speaker 19: And he starts yelling at me, and Holly's like, relax,
- 59:19Speaker 19: and you know he can't.
- 59:20Speaker 7: He could care less. He's got eighty six goals he
- 59:23Speaker 7: could carry.
- 59:25Speaker 19: At that point shit from the coach. He hasn't even
- 59:28Speaker 19: given Brett shit. He's reported the car stolen. But the
- 59:32Speaker 19: worst part about the whole thing was we went out
- 59:34Speaker 19: on the ice and all of these people are around
- 59:37Speaker 19: the glass waiting for Holly Stick like they're banging on
- 59:40Speaker 19: the glass, Hey Chase, you know, great breakfast, And they're
- 59:44Speaker 19: just like security wearing the Orange Pops security jackets and
- 59:50Speaker 19: strippers and and like every single like from Pops, like
- 59:56Speaker 19: just everything. And Garth Butcher was the captain and he
- 1:00:01Speaker 19: just skated out on the ice and he looked around.
- 1:00:03Speaker 19: He watched this throw up five minut and he comes over.
- 1:00:05Speaker 19: He goes, what the fuck did you guys do last night?
- 1:00:07Speaker 19: I said, Butcher, you wouldn't believe it if I told you,
- 1:00:11Speaker 19: And Holly could care less. He couldn't care that I
- 1:00:14Speaker 19: was getting it. I got into it. I got all
- 1:00:15Speaker 19: of the shit for it. But Holly could care less.
- 1:00:18Speaker 19: He was just like, man, that was fun.
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: Huh.
- 1:00:21Speaker 19: And I'm like, dude, they're still here. It's practices over.
- 1:00:24Speaker 19: Get him out of here.
- 1:00:26Speaker 7: Oh what a day.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: A teammate, a friend, a colleague, Mike Roup proper, how
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: we do a big man?
- 1:00:31Speaker 11: Hey, I love you guys. I'm glad to get on
- 1:00:34Speaker 11: here with you guys. But uh ann, dude, I was
- 1:00:37Speaker 11: drafted in the first round. I know I went back
- 1:00:39Speaker 11: in the draft and got drafted the third round, but
- 1:00:41Speaker 11: are you gonna strip that from me? So I was
- 1:00:43Speaker 11: never drafted in the first round. I don't even get
- 1:00:45Speaker 11: that acknowledgment anymore.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: There's a clip.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: It says on YouTube, Mike Roup calls Jody Shelley irrelevant.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Talk to me twenty ten, you and Jody going head
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: to head.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: I hate that that clip made it out there. Man,
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: I do I do?
- 1:00:58Speaker 11: You know I too because I was coaching my son
- 1:01:00Speaker 11: when I got done playing all these all these little
- 1:01:02Speaker 11: punk teenagers are playing at the lockero. I'm like, would
- 1:01:05Speaker 11: you shut your phone off like it was your phone?
- 1:01:07Speaker 9: You know what I mean?
- 1:01:07Speaker 11: They're playing this clip. So let me give you a
- 1:01:10Speaker 11: little backstory because I play with Jody and Columbus and
- 1:01:13Speaker 11: you guys know Jody well, Jody. I was on line
- 1:01:15Speaker 11: with Jody. He's one of the greatest teammates I played
- 1:01:18Speaker 11: with in the NHL. I love Jody. It was the
- 1:01:22Speaker 11: battle of the Rangers and the Flyers, and in the
- 1:01:25Speaker 11: heat of the moment, you do what you things come
- 1:01:29Speaker 11: out right And did I now did I know? So
- 1:01:32Speaker 11: the full transparency get of that, I knew I was
- 1:01:35Speaker 11: might I was Mike. Okay that Mike was on me.
- 1:01:38Speaker 11: And so Mike during this HBO is covering the road
- 1:01:42Speaker 11: in the Winter Classic, this scrum happens. I'm going after
- 1:01:45Speaker 11: I'm going after Tom Cistido and I'm trying to fight him,
- 1:01:50Speaker 11: and Jody comes over and shoves me. He's like, why
- 1:01:52Speaker 11: are you going after the twenty two year old I'm
- 1:01:53Speaker 11: basically because he's acting like an idiot. Jody's like, you know,
- 1:01:56Speaker 11: asking me to fight, and so I'm not thinking about
- 1:01:59Speaker 11: being miked in that moment. I say that. Postgame, I
- 1:02:02Speaker 11: go up to our PR department and I say, hey,
- 1:02:05Speaker 11: I need to talk to we need to talk to
- 1:02:07Speaker 11: the HBO guys. I want that cut, and so they go,
- 1:02:10Speaker 11: all right, we'll talk to him. We'll see and the
- 1:02:12Speaker 11: HBO guys were like, well, let's see what you're talking about.
- 1:02:15Speaker 11: And they came back and they said, we can't cut that,
- 1:02:18Speaker 11: and I'm like, come on, and they're go, we.
- 1:02:22Speaker 9: Need to leave that in.
- 1:02:23Speaker 11: So they left it in and so it's kind of
- 1:02:25Speaker 11: gotten this thing. And I feel bad because, like, you know,
- 1:02:27Speaker 11: Joey's a great dude. I've worked them and whatever. But
- 1:02:30Speaker 11: I mean, I think Jody understands in the heat of
- 1:02:32Speaker 11: the moment. But yeah, man, that thing made its rounds
- 1:02:34Speaker 11: and I hear that all the time.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: As you said, so frustrated too, like your kid and
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: his teavk's looking up like put your phone doing okay,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Like I love Joe, He's a great dude.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: It just came out. We've talked before with the Netflix
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: talk on the Danbury Trashers.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: I mean unbelievable. I mean that people on Netflix love that.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: Your favorite story reminiscing about that?
- 1:02:54Speaker 11: Oh man, there's so many. My favorite story about the
- 1:02:57Speaker 11: Danbury Trashers was, I guess the best way of I
- 1:03:01Speaker 11: know some people explained it this way. It was basically
- 1:03:04Speaker 11: slap shot marrying the sopranos.
- 1:03:08Speaker 7: I remember.
- 1:03:09Speaker 11: I remember, so I had to play ten regular season
- 1:03:11Speaker 11: games of qualify for the playoff roster. So I tried to.
- 1:03:15Speaker 11: I played every other weekend I played in. My former
- 1:03:18Speaker 11: junior team was Erie of the Ontario Hockey League.
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: So I was.
- 1:03:21Speaker 11: Playing an Aria, living in an Aria, practice with the
- 1:03:23Speaker 11: Otters during the week. Every other weekend I'd go play
- 1:03:25Speaker 11: a couple of games. So I got till ten i'd
- 1:03:27Speaker 11: be able to play in the playoffs. So anyways, I'm
- 1:03:29Speaker 11: starting I'm there for a little bit. I'm starting to
- 1:03:31Speaker 11: see how things are kind of happening here and this
- 1:03:33Speaker 11: is a really tough team and kind of seeing, oh, yeah,
- 1:03:37Speaker 11: this is this is a unique situation, and I remember
- 1:03:40Speaker 11: being on the bus and I was I was doing
- 1:03:43Speaker 11: a three and three in Michigan to bang out like
- 1:03:45Speaker 11: three games, and I was falling asleep on the bus
- 1:03:48Speaker 11: and I had my head against the window, and right
- 1:03:51Speaker 11: behind me the see behind me is you guys know
- 1:03:53Speaker 11: John Morasti, so nasty. Morasti is a tough guy on
- 1:03:57Speaker 11: our team. And so what ends up happening is Barry
- 1:04:02Speaker 11: Melrose and Steve Levy they own that or on that team,
- 1:04:06Speaker 11: and that's in the league. And Barry made a comment
- 1:04:08Speaker 11: to the media about Tony Soprano running the Danburry trash
- 1:04:11Speaker 11: as well. Our owner Jimmy Galante didn't like that, and
- 1:04:16Speaker 11: he said, we're gonna send a message next time we
- 1:04:18Speaker 11: play them that we were playing on the next weekend.
- 1:04:21Speaker 11: I was not scheduled to play that weekend. So I'm
- 1:04:24Speaker 11: sleeping against the window. Rasty's on the phone. He's making
- 1:04:28Speaker 11: a phone call to I think it was Chad Wagner
- 1:04:32Speaker 11: was his name, and he was I put this together later,
- 1:04:35Speaker 11: but this is the conversation. I'm here on one side
- 1:04:37Speaker 11: to Hey, buddy, it's me Nasty. What are you doing
- 1:04:41Speaker 11: next weekend? Hey, you want to come play some hockey?
- 1:04:44Speaker 11: Make some money. And I'm like, I'm like, I'm like sleeping,
- 1:04:48Speaker 11: I'm like listening.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: And he's like he's.
- 1:04:50Speaker 11: Like, yeah, man, no, no, no, I know you have
- 1:04:52Speaker 11: no no, no, I know you haven't played hockey in
- 1:04:54Speaker 11: a few years. No, I know you're not in shape.
- 1:04:57Speaker 11: It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter.
- 1:04:59Speaker 9: No.
- 1:04:59Speaker 11: Literally, he wants you to come run around like a
- 1:05:01Speaker 11: dumb dumb and he's gonna pay you two grand to
- 1:05:03Speaker 11: come out and play the game. And it's like, all right,
- 1:05:06Speaker 11: well do you think about it?
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: Let me know.
- 1:05:07Speaker 11: Blah blah blah. Hangs up, and I'm like, what just happened?
- 1:05:11Speaker 11: So when I left that road trip, I said to
- 1:05:13Speaker 11: some of the boys, like, go hey, boys, keep me
- 1:05:14Speaker 11: posted what happens, because I think something's going down. Sure enough,
- 1:05:18Speaker 11: this Chad Wagner, he's been expelled from multiple leagues and
- 1:05:22Speaker 11: the like like pros, go look them up. Yes, yes,
- 1:05:28Speaker 11: like one penalty minutes. He's been expelled from all these places.
- 1:05:33Speaker 11: He came in played that weekend. Yeah he played. Uh,
- 1:05:36Speaker 11: he played one game.
- 1:05:38Speaker 7: He uh.
- 1:05:38Speaker 11: He ended up climbing into around X bench and pulled
- 1:05:42Speaker 11: the coach by his uh, by his blazer and punched
- 1:05:45Speaker 11: the coach got expelled from the UHL. I'm like, wow,
- 1:05:49Speaker 11: this is unbelievable. But and there was also times where
- 1:05:51Speaker 11: we just be driving back or between games and you
- 1:05:55Speaker 11: stop at a truck stop and you hear the bus breaks,
- 1:05:57Speaker 11: you know, the.
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: Doors would open.
- 1:05:59Speaker 11: You're like waking up. You're like, what are we doing?
- 1:06:02Speaker 11: And the lights would come on and there'd just be
- 1:06:03Speaker 11: some dude on the bus and it'd be like Frank
- 1:06:06Speaker 11: the Animal by A Lois. We're just picking them off
- 1:06:08Speaker 11: off the turnpike, Like what are we doing? Like is
- 1:06:12Speaker 11: that is that Frank? Is that by Frank BYO Lois?
- 1:06:15Speaker 11: And then like he goes playing a game and just
- 1:06:17Speaker 11: beat the wheels off people and then get stop and
- 1:06:19Speaker 11: drop them off with the truck stop on your way home.
- 1:06:21Speaker 10: Literally, Suresy I started watching Shorty. It's literally Suresy phill
- 1:06:26Speaker 10: am in.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: He is now one of the top players on the
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: best team in hockey this season. Ladies and gentlemen, Dylan
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Strom here in NHL unscripted, Dylan, good to see you.
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: Thanks for having me. Boys, appreciate it you.
- 1:06:38Speaker 10: You talked about Chick there and and I have to
- 1:06:41Speaker 10: touch a little bit on Jacob Chicken and all of
- 1:06:43Speaker 10: the things, all of the things he does off ice.
- 1:06:46Speaker 10: What is he on right now? Is he on the
- 1:06:47Speaker 10: steak and beef tower or is he doing a kettlebell circuit?
- 1:06:50Speaker 10: Or is he doing cartwheels? What's he got going on?
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: Oh?
- 1:06:53Speaker 20: God, yeah, he's beef tallow is the one thing that
- 1:06:57Speaker 20: that gets brought up a lot here. No, no, no oils.
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:07:02Speaker 20: I honestly don't know. He's a new thing every day.
- 1:07:04Speaker 20: I heard yesterday that he's no light bulbs. He's doing
- 1:07:06Speaker 20: a candle candle light in his house. Now, yeah, that's
- 1:07:10Speaker 20: what that's what his saying thing was yesterday. So he
- 1:07:12Speaker 20: was on he was onto a bees wax candles, is
- 1:07:15Speaker 20: what I heard.
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: Is great for you.
- 1:07:16Speaker 20: So now now we're we're all talking about bees wax candles.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: No light bulbs in the rink, whatever it takes.
- 1:07:22Speaker 20: That's what I do him. Like, you can't you can't
- 1:07:24Speaker 20: have it one way with But I don't know that's
- 1:07:25Speaker 20: a top topic for a different day. But like there's
- 1:07:27Speaker 20: lights everywhere, Like when are you talking about no light bulbs?
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Speaking of lights and being in the spotlight.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Uh, Dylan, you've been used to it because you know,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: play with Conrack, David, the Erie Otters, the OHL. What
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: was it like having so much attention again and run
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: a teammate like that as you're seeing now.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: With the Vetchkin.
- 1:07:43Speaker 20: Yeah, I mean the situations are are are pretty similar. Obviously,
- 1:07:46Speaker 20: you know a little bit greater of a stage now,
- 1:07:49Speaker 20: but you know when you're in that moment and you're
- 1:07:51Speaker 20: on a junior team and things are you know, pretty
- 1:07:54Speaker 20: crazy around the draft and you know there's talk like
- 1:07:56Speaker 20: he's the next Crosby and and things like that. So
- 1:07:59Speaker 20: it was definitely crazy back then. You know, we we
- 1:08:02Speaker 20: had a lot of fun. We had a you know,
- 1:08:03Speaker 20: I unbelieve team. We made some great pickups of the
- 1:08:06Speaker 20: deadline that year, and we had a lot of fun.
- 1:08:07Speaker 20: We made a run to the finals in the OHL
- 1:08:09Speaker 20: that year, and you know, it was awesome to be
- 1:08:13Speaker 20: a part of it and kind of see a whole
- 1:08:14Speaker 20: city kind of get behind a team and you know
- 1:08:17Speaker 20: how that worked. So definitely some similarities with you know,
- 1:08:21Speaker 20: the kind of the superstardom you know type type people
- 1:08:24Speaker 20: and players. But I think just you know, seeing it
- 1:08:28Speaker 20: now and seeing it at you kind of a national
- 1:08:30Speaker 20: level and seeing it, you know, people are we have
- 1:08:34Speaker 20: people that come out of you know, after practice, and
- 1:08:36Speaker 20: there's people from Belarus, there's people from Austria, from Germany.
- 1:08:39Speaker 20: Someone had to sign last night and said, I'm from
- 1:08:41Speaker 20: Korea here to see OV and like it's like, you know,
- 1:08:44Speaker 20: people are coming from everywhere near and far to see
- 1:08:47Speaker 20: this guy play.
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: So it's no, it's cool.
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: He's one of the best skating pictures ever.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: And most importantly, our friend and a colleague at MLB
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Network with Intentional Talk, which you can watch weekdays at
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: four o'clock Eastern.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen rocking a Northeeks Jersey. Ryan Dempster, what
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: is up, temp?
- 1:09:02Speaker 15: Yes, I love this mold school right here. Like I'm
- 1:09:05Speaker 15: actually I've been meaning to go get my tug nut
- 1:09:07Speaker 15: put on the back that he had seventy three saves
- 1:09:11Speaker 15: in a game I didn't go against anybody.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Else, So I've got to tell the story.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: We're at the All Star Game last year in Seattle
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: and in the gym, demp comes in.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: We're just kind of loosen up here on the treadmill
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: and I like, I typ to last time. I God,
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: I much watch William how about you?
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: And you said to me, I was hanging out with
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Eddie Vedder and we're listening to the new unreleased music
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: of the Rolling Stones.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: That is an all time flex.
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: By you.
- 1:09:34Speaker 9: Dude.
- 1:09:34Speaker 15: That night was I'll tell this story a little bit
- 1:09:37Speaker 15: because I think it's I think it says volumes about Ed.
- 1:09:40Speaker 15: So I get a text from him and THEOSA come
- 1:09:44Speaker 15: down the house to Ed. He's got he's got his
- 1:09:45Speaker 15: house in Seattle. And then down the street he bought
- 1:09:47Speaker 15: the beach house, just kind of down the street and
- 1:09:49Speaker 15: it's just this nice, beautiful property and it's right on
- 1:09:52Speaker 15: the water. And so I show up and it's it's
- 1:09:55Speaker 15: him and Woody and uh. He works with the league
- 1:10:00Speaker 15: and then Chris snow former general manager with the assistant
- 1:10:05Speaker 15: general manager with the with the flames, and at this time,
- 1:10:08Speaker 15: you know, he's going through the als. Stuff's hitting him
- 1:10:10Speaker 15: really hard. You know, he's nonverbal. He can still walk,
- 1:10:15Speaker 15: you know, harder to move his arms and stuff like this,
- 1:10:17Speaker 15: and and so we're all drinking coronas and it's kind
- 1:10:22Speaker 15: of that you've got a fire going. And then it's like,
- 1:10:24Speaker 15: you know, hey, man, you know you're not gonna believe this,
- 1:10:26Speaker 15: but I got to like he's telling the story. I
- 1:10:28Speaker 15: got to cut some music for the New Stones album,
- 1:10:30Speaker 15: you know, like Ronnie Wood called me and I'm like, yeah,
- 1:10:33Speaker 15: me too. I was busy though, so you know, like uh,
- 1:10:37Speaker 15: and so the sound guy for Pearl Jam works with
- 1:10:40Speaker 15: the Stone and they're cutting this album, so he doesn't
- 1:10:42Speaker 15: want to hear a few and we're like, yeah, let's go.
- 1:10:43Speaker 15: So he plays these and then he's like, all right,
- 1:10:46Speaker 15: now I'm gonna play this, but you promised you cannot.
- 1:10:48Speaker 15: Let's like, do not let this out, you know, don't
- 1:10:50Speaker 15: tape any of them, Like we're we're not gonna tape it.
- 1:10:53Speaker 15: And he plays the entire Black Matter the new Pearl
- 1:10:57Speaker 15: Jam album six months before the Pearl Jam album is
- 1:10:59Speaker 15: being released, you know. And I know this for a fact,
- 1:11:03Speaker 15: and it wasn't it didn't to be said. But the
- 1:11:05Speaker 15: only reason we heard any of that was because he
- 1:11:09Speaker 15: knew that Chris only had so much time left on
- 1:11:11Speaker 15: this earth and that there was a good chance he
- 1:11:14Speaker 15: wasn't going to hear any of that music. And that,
- 1:11:16Speaker 15: to me, is why Eddie is one of these iconic legends,
- 1:11:20Speaker 15: Hall of Fame superstars that truly touches other people's lives
- 1:11:23Speaker 15: in a way that we can only imagine. You know,
- 1:11:26Speaker 15: and it was just unreal for him to do that,
- 1:11:28Speaker 15: you know.
- 1:11:28Speaker 7: And and I'll finish with this.
- 1:11:30Speaker 15: So we get done at the end of the night,
- 1:11:33Speaker 15: and then THEO and what are you We got to
- 1:11:34Speaker 15: get to Chris back then it's cold out. We can't
- 1:11:36Speaker 15: get him, he can't get sick, you know. We gotta
- 1:11:38Speaker 15: get him back to the hotel, you know, so he
- 1:11:41Speaker 15: can't tell us that he doesn't, you know. And he's
- 1:11:44Speaker 15: kind of like looking at me like like I can
- 1:11:47Speaker 15: tell and I kind of have had a few to
- 1:11:48Speaker 15: me chronos. I'm like, go, why we going? Yeah, another album?
- 1:11:52Speaker 15: You can make real quick, ed Like, let's make something
- 1:11:54Speaker 15: right now, you know, Like we're having a blast. So
- 1:11:56Speaker 15: we get in the car, we take them back to
- 1:11:57Speaker 15: his hotel. THEO takes him up to the room. Chris's
- 1:12:00Speaker 15: wife right drops him off at the hotel. Next day,
- 1:12:03Speaker 15: I got to text this. It's a group text message
- 1:12:06Speaker 15: from THEO that said, by the way, I got this
- 1:12:08Speaker 15: from Chris's wife said, Chris had the best time of
- 1:12:11Speaker 15: his life last night. Didn't want to leave. Not sure
- 1:12:14Speaker 15: why you guys took him home MS, yes and peace, buddy,
- 1:12:20Speaker 15: I know you're up there.
- 1:12:21Speaker 12: Man.
- 1:12:21Speaker 15: It was a night to never forget man, it was unbelievable.

- 1:12:43Speaker 1: about that. Of course, the Amazon Prime schedule on Mondays
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: is particular focus for me. But we'll look at our
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: key matches, which teams we think of easy schedules, which
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: teams have relatively tough schedules. Plus there's always news percolating.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Maybe a move gets happening, you know, some trade, some
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: free agent, whoever it is. It's a quiet time, but
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: NHL and Scripted is still all over. It will also
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: look ahead to the upcoming season at which teams we
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: think are going to have the one step forward, one
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: stay back. Anyways, thanks so much for check out on
