- 0:17To love letters. Welcome to Love lovers from God.
- 1:07We have been reading about King Solomon and all of his wisdom
- 1:14and what that wisdom really brought him in his old age and
- 1:21that wisdom that he had went all over the world.
- 1:26People began to hear about him everywhere.
- 1:31And what we're going to notice here today is in First Kings
- 1:36chapter 10, the queen of Sheba heard about his wisdom.
- 1:42So let's read that First Kings chapter 10.
- 1:47When the Queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning
- 1:52the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions.
- 1:58She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels
- 2:02that bore spices, very much gold and precious stones.
- 2:08And when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all
- 2:12that was in her heart. So Solomon answered all her
- 2:16questions. There was nothing so difficult
- 2:19for the king that he could not explain it to her.
- 2:23And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon,
- 2:27the house that he built, and the food on his table, and the
- 2:32seating of his servants, and the service of his waiters and their
- 2:38apparel, and his cup bearers, and his entryway, by the way
- 2:44which he went up to the House of the Lord, there, there was no
- 2:48more spirit in her. And then she said to the king,
- 2:52It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your
- 2:58words and about your wisdom. However, I didn't believe the
- 3:02words till I came, and I saw it with my own eyes.
- 3:07And indeed the half was not told me.
- 3:10Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame of which I
- 3:15heard. Happy are your men, and happy
- 3:20are these your servants who stand continually before you and
- 3:26hear your wisdom. Blessed be the Lord your God,
- 3:31who delighted in your setting you on the throne of Israel,
- 3:35because the Lord has loved Israel forever.
- 3:38Therefore he made you king to do justice in righteousness.
- 3:43And then she gave the king 120 talents of gold, spices in great
- 3:51quantities, and precious stones. There never again came such
- 3:57abundance of spices as the queen of Sheba gave to Solomon.
- 4:02Also the ships of Hiram, which brought gold from Ofer, and
- 4:07brought great quantities of almond wood and precious stones
- 4:12from Ofer. And the king made steps of the
- 4:17alpha wood for the House of the Lord, and for the King's house.
- 4:21And also harps and string instruments for singers.
- 4:26There never again came such almond wood, nor has alike been
- 4:31seen to this day. Now King Solomon gave the Queen
- 4:36of Sheba all that she desired, whatever she asks, besides what
- 4:42Solomon had given her according to the royal generosity.
- 4:46So she turned and went to her own country, and she and her
- 4:51servants. The weight of gold that came to
- 4:54Solomon yearly was 666 talents of gold.
- 5:03Besides that, from the travelling merchants and from
- 5:06the income of traders, and from all the kings of Arabia and from
- 5:12the governors of the country. And King Solomon made 200 large
- 5:17Shields of hammered gold, 600 shekels of gold went into each
- 5:24shield. He also made 300 Shields of
- 5:30hammered gold. 3 miners of gold went into each shield.
- 5:35And the king put them in the House of the forest of Lebanon.
- 5:40Moreover, the king made a great throne of ivory, overlaid it
- 5:45with pure gold. The throne had 6 steps and the
- 5:50top of the throne was round at the back and there were armrests
- 5:55on either side of the place of the seat, and two lions stood
- 6:00beside the armrests. 12 lions stood there, one on each side of
- 6:07the six steps. Nothing like this had been made
- 6:11for any other Kingdom. All of King Solomon's drinking
- 6:16vessels were gold, and all the vessels of the House of the
- 6:21Forest of Lebanon were pure gold.
- 6:24Not one with silver, for this was accounted as nothing in the
- 6:29days of Solomon. For the king had merchant ships
- 6:34at sea with a fleet of Hiram, and once every three years the
- 6:39merchant ships came, bringing gold and silver and ivory and
- 6:45apes and monkeys. So King Solomon surpassed all
- 6:49the kings of the earth, enriches and wisdom.
- 6:54Now all the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his
- 6:58wisdom which God had put in his heart.
- 7:02Each man brought his present articles of silver and gold,
- 7:08garments and armor, spices, and horses and mules at a set rate
- 7:15year by year. And Solomon gathered Chariots
- 7:19and horsemen. He had 1400 Chariots and 12,000
- 7:27horsemen who be stationed in the chariot cities and with the king
- 7:32of Jerusalem. The king made silver as common
- 7:36in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedar trees as abundant as
- 7:42the sycamores which are in the lowland.
- 7:46Also Solomon had horses imported from Egypt and Kiva.
- 7:52The King's merchants brought them in Kiva at the current
- 7:55price. Now a chariot that was imported
- 7:59from Egypt cost 600 shekels of silver and a horse 150 And thus
- 8:07through all their agents, they exported them to all the kings
- 8:12of the Hittites and the kings of Syria.
- 8:16So is the reading of First Kings chapter 10.
- 8:21And you can see all of the riches that Solomon had, the
- 8:26wealth that was there. He just, I mean, there wasn't
- 8:30anything he needed at all. Now let's notice at the end of
- 8:36Solomon's life what he thought about all of this.
- 8:42So if you turn over to the book of Ecclesiastes, which is a book
- 8:47that Solomon wrote toward the end of his life, we're going to
- 8:51read chapters four and five. Notice his thinking, Chapter 4.
- 9:00Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done
- 9:03under the sun, and look the tears of the oppressed.
- 9:08But they have no comforter. On the side of their oppressors
- 9:12there is power, but they have no comforter.
- 9:16Therefore I praise the dead who are already dead more than the
- 9:20living who are still alive. Yet better than both is he who
- 9:25has never existed, who has not seen the evil work that is done
- 9:31under the sun. And I saw that for all toil and
- 9:36every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor.
- 9:42This also is vanity. In grasping for the wind the
- 9:47fool folds his hands, and he consumes his own flesh.
- 9:52Better a handful with quietness than both hands full together
- 9:57with toil and grasping for the wind.
- 10:02Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
- 10:08There is one alone, without companion.
- 10:11He has neither son nor brother, yet there's no end to all his
- 10:16laborers, nor is his eyes satisfied with riches.
- 10:21But he never asked, From whom do I to Ellen deprive myself of
- 10:26good? This also is vanity, and a great
- 10:29misfortune. 2 are better than one because they have a good
- 10:35reward for their labor, but if they fall, one will lift up his
- 10:40companion. But woe to him who is alone when
- 10:43he falls, for he has no one to help him up again.
- 10:47If two lie down together, they'll keep warm, but how can
- 10:51one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by
- 10:56another, two can withstand, and threefold cord is not quickly
- 11:01broken. Better a poor and wise use that
- 11:07an old and foolish king, who will be admonished no more, for
- 11:13he comes out of prison to be king, although he was born poor
- 11:17in his Kingdom. I saw all the living who walk
- 11:21under the sun. They were the second youth who
- 11:25stands in his place. There was no end of all the
- 11:29people over whom he was made king.
- 11:32Yet those who come afterward will not rejoice in Him.
- 11:36Surely this also is vanity and grasping for the wind.
- 11:42He continues in chapter 5. Let's read on with that.
- 11:48Walk prudently. When you go to the House of God,
- 11:52draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for
- 11:57they do not know that they do evil.
- 12:00Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter
- 12:04anything hastily before God, for God's in heaven and you're on
- 12:09the earth. Therefore let your words be few,
- 12:14for a dream comes through much activity, and a a fool's voice
- 12:19is known by his many words. When you make a vow to God, do
- 12:24not delay to pay it, for he has no pleasure in fools.
- 12:29Pay what you have vowed. Better not to vow than to vow
- 12:33and not pay. Do not let your mouth cause your
- 12:37flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an
- 12:43error. Why should God be angry at your
- 12:46excuse and destroy the work of your hands?
- 12:50For in the multitude of dreams and many words, there's also
- 12:55vanity. But fear God, if you see the
- 12:59oppression of the poor and the violent perversion of justice
- 13:05and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter, for
- 13:10high official watches over high official, and the higher
- 13:15officials are all over them. Moreover, the profit of the land
- 13:19is for all. Even the king is served from the
- 13:23field. He who loves silver will not be
- 13:27satisfied with silver, nor he who loves abundance with
- 13:33increase. This also is vanity.
- 13:37When goods increase, they increase who eat them?
- 13:42So what profited the owners, except to see them with their
- 13:46eyes? The sleep of a labouring man is
- 13:50sweet, whether he shall little or much, but the abundance of
- 13:55the rich will not permit him to sleep.
- 13:59There's a severe evil which I have seen under the sun.
- 14:04Riches kept for their owner to his hurt, but those riches
- 14:10perish through misfortune. When he begets a son, there's
- 14:16nothing in his hand, as he came from his mother's womb naked
- 14:21Shall he return to go as he came, And he should take nothing
- 14:27from his labor which he can carry away in his hand.
- 14:32And this also is a severe evil. Just exactly as he came, so
- 14:38shall he go. Now what prophet is he who is
- 14:42labored for the wind all his days?
- 14:46He also eats in darkness, and he has much sorrow and sickness and
- 14:53anger. Here's what I've seen.
- 14:56It's good in fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the
- 15:01good of all his labor, and which he toils under the sun all the
- 15:06days of his life, which God gives him.
- 15:09For it is his heritage, As for the every man to whom God has
- 15:15given riches and wealth and given him power to eat of it, to
- 15:20receive his Harry and rejoice in his laborers.
- 15:24This is the gift of God. For he will not dwell unduly on
- 15:28the days of his life because God keeps him busy with the joy of
- 15:33his heart. And such is the reading of
- 15:37Ecclesiastes chapter 5. We read two of these chapters in
- 15:44in Ecclesiastes now. And you can see with all of the
- 15:49wealth and the power that Solomon has, he's still not a
- 15:54happy man, not a happy man at all.
- 15:57Let's note another little point that I want to pass on to you
- 16:01today. One of my friends has said that
- 16:06the COVID-19 pandemic challenged the message of the church in a
- 16:15significant way. What kind of message have we
- 16:19been proclaiming? Did it help people during this
- 16:23traumatic time of loss and uncertainty?
- 16:28Why do we only discover meaning when we look back?
- 16:36The challenge is to have hope and see meaning.
- 16:40And even while we're in the furnace of life, you desire to
- 16:49know the art of living. My friend, someone is sad.
- 16:55It is contained in one phrase. Make use of the suffering you're
- 17:02involved in. Hard times expose the impurity
- 17:08of our faith life. It teaches us to no longer trust
- 17:13in ourselves, but to build our hope on God and His faithfulness
- 17:19alone. His faithfulness is what has
- 17:25given us a new life, and that's what carries us through every
- 17:32trial. Shall we pray?
- 17:36Our Father in heaven, we're thankful that You give us so
- 17:41much. You give us all we need, our
- 17:46health, our strength, our daily food.
- 17:49It's all there. And sometimes you give us much
- 17:52more than we need. Help us to use it faithfully.
- 17:58Help us to understand that money and wealth don't really
- 18:03accomplish much unless we use it for you and help us to do that
- 18:09very thing. We're thankful that in your love
- 18:12letter that you have given it to us.
- 18:15You give us the example of people who have misused the
- 18:19wealth and wisdom you gave them. And it's an example for us to
- 18:25not make the same mistakes. So be with us.
- 18:29Help us on our way. May we be the kind of people you
- 18:33want. We're thankful for your Son
- 18:35Jesus who came here and made everything possible.
- 18:41And we pray this in His name. Amen.
