Latest / Patriots Catch-22 / Patriots Catch-22 8/19: Takeaways from Patriots Joint Practice with Eagles
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:08Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Bars and Lazarre.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Hello, everybody nailed it. He joined us always by our bar.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Bars.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Coaches universally agreed with the notion that McDaniel's calling games
- 0:26Speaker 1: to win them. He understands situational football, and that's not
- 0:30Speaker 1: always the case with some elite play callers. That right there,
- 0:35Speaker 1: the situational element of it that these other guys still
- 0:38Speaker 1: can't do and frankly don't seem interested in learning.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Is such a show?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Is such a I didn't see this quote until right now.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Is such a pure advantage for the Patriots that McDaniel's
- 0:51Speaker 1: understanding of situational football? It shouldn't be anybody who's calling
- 0:54Speaker 1: plays in the NFL should understand situational football.
- 0:57Speaker 2: They don't.
- 0:58Speaker 1: That is such a major advantage for the Patriots twenty two.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Is your head still spinning? My head spinning at still
- 1:07Speaker 2: playing catch up?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Here?
- 1:08Speaker 4: Hi?
- 1:09Speaker 2: Hello everybody? Yeah, this is uh. This has been a
- 1:12Speaker 2: fun day, but this was a busy day, guys. There
- 1:16Speaker 2: was a lot going on. It's Evan, it's Alex, it's
- 1:19Speaker 2: Matt behind the glass Marine producing Catch twenty two today,
- 1:23Speaker 2: it's a little bit of a change up. We let
- 1:25Speaker 2: a soft the hook. He's got Revs tonight. I think
- 1:28Speaker 2: I think he's gonna be bigger late, so Marine's taken over.
- 1:32Speaker 2: But wow, yeah, what that was a vot. That was
- 1:35Speaker 2: a busy day out there, a lot of competitive periods, offense, defense,
- 1:40Speaker 2: split field coming together at the end, similar to the
- 1:43Speaker 2: script that they had last week with the Colts, but
- 1:46Speaker 2: it was it was coming in hot, it was coming
- 1:49Speaker 2: in fast. Obviously, some big storylines from both sides, you know,
- 1:54Speaker 2: AJ Brown returning or whatever you want to call it,
- 1:57Speaker 2: going up against his old team. So we're gonna break
- 1:59Speaker 2: it down, guys. I mean, it was a lot to discuss.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I think my big picture we always start big picture
- 2:06Speaker 2: on this show and then we go zoom in slowly
- 2:09Speaker 2: but surely. My opening take Alex on that joint practice
- 2:15Speaker 2: was I immediately thought yesterday to myself about the practice
- 2:20Speaker 2: we watched two years ago in twenty twenty four when
- 2:23Speaker 2: the Eagles came here and AJ Brown was on the
- 2:25Speaker 2: other side and Milton Williams was on the other side,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and the Eagles came in here and absolutely put a
- 2:32Speaker 2: herding on the twenty twenty four Patriots, and it was
- 2:36Speaker 2: a reality check. It was a wake up call. It
- 2:39Speaker 2: was a oh, this might not go so hot for
- 2:43Speaker 2: the Patriots this year. The Eagles, if I had my
- 2:46Speaker 2: years correctly, and my head is spinning a little bit,
- 2:48Speaker 2: they won the super Bowl that year.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yeah, because that was the male year.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Yeah, they won the Super Bowl. So we were watching
- 2:55Speaker 2: the Super Bowl champions practice against a team that picked
- 2:59Speaker 2: fourth over.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Fired its coach in or won four games and fired
- 3:02Speaker 1: a team.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Yeah, right, So it was telling. The best most positive
- 3:09Speaker 2: compliment I can give the Patriots today is that they
- 3:13Speaker 2: more than held their own today against the Eagles. And
- 3:16Speaker 2: it's just a cool juxtaposition of where how far they've
- 3:21Speaker 2: come in just two years under Mike Rable, that they
- 3:23Speaker 2: went from the most one sided joint practice I have
- 3:27Speaker 2: ever seen in my time covering the team in twenty
- 3:30Speaker 2: twenty four against the Eagles to two years later. If
- 3:34Speaker 2: you're into this order, did they win practice not win practice? Thing?
- 3:37Speaker 2: You could at least say that the Patriots held their
- 3:40Speaker 2: own against a really good game team.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Specifically, and I know we'll get into some of the
- 3:44Speaker 1: specifics a little bit, but I just think it's worth
- 3:45Speaker 1: mentioning off that take the big thing that day. It
- 3:49Speaker 1: wasn't just that the Eagles looked so much better than
- 3:52Speaker 1: the Patriots. It was the way the Eagles defensive front
- 3:56Speaker 1: just beat up on the Patriots offensive d Remember, because
- 4:00Speaker 1: everybody wanted to know.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I think it was varsity against JV.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I think that was their first joint practice of the year,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and everybody wanted to know what is Drake may going
- 4:07Speaker 1: to look like against another defense? And we had to
- 4:08Speaker 1: come in and be like, we don't know, Like he
- 4:11Speaker 1: didn't he didn't have time to throw the ball, Like
- 4:14Speaker 1: we have no clue what he would have looked like.
- 4:15Speaker 1: There was no time to read or set his feet
- 4:17Speaker 1: or anything. I would say, Evan. And it wasn't definitive
- 4:21Speaker 1: by any means. It wasn't as dominant as that. I
- 4:23Speaker 1: don't know that it could be, but I would say
- 4:27Speaker 1: the Patriots offensive line had the edge against the Eagles
- 4:31Speaker 1: defense fright now. There was some back and forth in that,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and it's slight, you know, and if you wanted to say,
- 4:36Speaker 1: the Eagles had their moments and we go back and forth,
- 4:38Speaker 1: but yeah, like specifically, the thing that always stands out
- 4:41Speaker 1: to me again about that practice is literally May and
- 4:44Speaker 1: Jacob Er sat having to like turn and run as
- 4:47Speaker 1: soon as they got the ball on every single snap.
- 4:50Speaker 1: It was, and today I thought they were there was
- 4:52Speaker 1: one kind of jail breaking pressure on Drake May, which
- 4:55Speaker 1: against that front is going to happen. Besides that, you know,
- 5:00Speaker 1: he had time. It wasn't five seconds every play, but
- 5:02Speaker 1: it was competitive. He had as much time as you
- 5:04Speaker 1: could realistically want.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Yeah, So that that was where my eyes were. As
- 5:08Speaker 2: you probably could have guessed without me telling you. They
- 5:11Speaker 2: were on the trenches all day today, both offensive and
- 5:13Speaker 2: defensive lines for the Patriots, you know, vice versa for
- 5:17Speaker 2: the Eagles. And my biggest takeaway going into the practice was,
- 5:22Speaker 2: I think the Patriots pass protection on offense has been
- 5:26Speaker 2: pretty solid all summer long. I think Drake May has
- 5:29Speaker 2: had clean pockets. And I thought he had clean pockets
- 5:32Speaker 2: against the Colts in the joint practice last week and
- 5:35Speaker 2: in the ten Patriots practices, I thought that he had
- 5:39Speaker 2: clean pockets, you know, padded practices. I thought he's had
- 5:42Speaker 2: clean pockets as well. But I was looking at it
- 5:45Speaker 2: and saying, I don't know how great the Patriots pass
- 5:49Speaker 2: rushers are to be Frank right, and we'll get to
- 5:51Speaker 2: that in a little bit here. And it was only
- 5:55Speaker 2: one one off practice against the Colts who have the
- 5:59Speaker 2: Forest Buck Aaron Grover Stewart and Lato's a nice player
- 6:02Speaker 2: and key and have some guys, but it's not the Eagles.
- 6:05Speaker 2: So it's not Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis and Hunt
- 6:08Speaker 2: and Nolan Smith. And they didn't even have Jonathan Grenard
- 6:11Speaker 2: out there today. They still have a bunch of dudes.
- 6:15Speaker 2: My big thing going into the practice was could could
- 6:19Speaker 2: the Patriots offensive line hold up against the Eagles defensive front?
- 6:23Speaker 2: If if I saw that from the Patriots offensive line,
- 6:26Speaker 2: I was going to be really really encouraged. And they
- 6:28Speaker 2: certainly held up. I thought they held up. Now was
- 6:30Speaker 2: it one sided either direction? No, I think it was
- 6:33Speaker 2: pretty split. It was a pretty even drop, which I
- 6:35Speaker 2: will take.
- 6:36Speaker 1: If we say in the one on ones or I
- 6:38Speaker 1: know you, I think actually do ties. I say with
- 6:40Speaker 1: the one on ones, ties goes to the offense. If
- 6:42Speaker 1: you lose, but you lose slowly and realistically, like the
- 6:45Speaker 1: quarterback would have time to get rid of the ball,
- 6:47Speaker 1: that's a win. Even if you maybe get beat, if
- 6:49Speaker 1: you make the guy work for it and you buy time.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I think that's really all you can do. So tie
- 6:54Speaker 1: I think goes to the offense in this case.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yeah. So I was encouraged by the pockets that Drake
- 6:59Speaker 2: May had. There's one play in particular that I thought
- 7:02Speaker 2: really stood out to me. He had aj Brown on
- 7:04Speaker 2: to his right. He had Romeo Dobs outside to his left.
- 7:08Speaker 2: They both ran double moves like little stutter and gooes
- 7:10Speaker 2: are out and ups down the sideline, both vertical routes.
- 7:14Speaker 2: There's a single high safety in the middle of the
- 7:15Speaker 2: field Manton man coverage on Dobbs and Brown. He had
- 7:19Speaker 2: time to look the safety off. He stared down the
- 7:21Speaker 2: right side of the field to aj Brown, moved the
- 7:24Speaker 2: safety to the right side of the field, then came
- 7:26Speaker 2: back left to Dobbs and threw went over Tarik Wool
- 7:29Speaker 2: into Romeo Dobbs down the left sideline for a deep completion.
- 7:34Speaker 2: You got if you don't have time in the pocket,
- 7:36Speaker 2: you don't have time to look off a safety, right Like,
- 7:38Speaker 2: that's that whole kind of uh you know sequence there
- 7:42Speaker 2: just doesn't play out as smoothly as it did. So
- 7:44Speaker 2: I was encouraged by that. I thought they ran the
- 7:47Speaker 2: ball a little bit today. Not as Rabel says, not
- 7:50Speaker 2: a ton of X plays, but not a ton of
- 7:52Speaker 2: big chunks on the ground, but they were able to
- 7:55Speaker 2: grind out some dirty yards. It's hard against Jordan Davis
- 7:58Speaker 2: and Zach Bond and Carter and those guys to really
- 8:01Speaker 2: run the ball on this Eagles defense, like they'll give
- 8:03Speaker 2: up a lot of yards on the ground. So to
- 8:06Speaker 2: at least get some four or five six yard runs
- 8:10Speaker 2: mostly by Ramandre Stevenson, I thought was encouraging as well.
- 8:13Speaker 2: So that's where I would start. I think the Patriots
- 8:16Speaker 2: offense through the joint practice with the Colts, the practice
- 8:19Speaker 2: that they had internally on Monday was a really really
- 8:23Speaker 2: good Drake May practice, And now the practice today, they're
- 8:26Speaker 2: they're kind of on a roll offensively in practice, for
- 8:30Speaker 2: what it's worth. But I think the offense looks really
- 8:32Speaker 2: really good defensively is moving over to the other side
- 8:35Speaker 2: of the ball, and then we'll get into individual players defensively.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I thought early on in the practice the Eagles ran
- 8:42Speaker 2: the ball pretty well. Saquon Barkley, but even Shipley, who
- 8:45Speaker 2: I always liked that a kid out of Clemson, I thought, yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 2: I thought he ran the ball pretty well to Shipley.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It was more those Kenneth Walker bounce outside kind of
- 8:55Speaker 2: runs that we saw in the Super Bowl. Squon, it
- 8:58Speaker 2: was more, you know, Saquon paid through the middle of
- 9:00Speaker 2: the field, you know, classic Saquon Barkley, right up the gut.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts also kept on a Reid option play that
- 9:08Speaker 2: was really similar to the one richardson and got them
- 9:10Speaker 2: on in the preseason game last week. So I thought
- 9:13Speaker 2: the run game for Philly was pretty good.
- 9:16Speaker 5: Uh.
- 9:17Speaker 2: They hit a big play down the field to Dantevian
- 9:19Speaker 2: Wicks as well in the opening period.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Do you think that was that the one where like
- 9:23Speaker 1: Bayard was the closest guy. It wasn't that was a
- 9:25Speaker 1: coverage bust, right.
- 9:27Speaker 6: I.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Maybe maybe I want to figure out what happened.
- 9:31Speaker 1: That was kind of like the one big negative play.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yeah, was the top for sure, and I thought I
- 9:36Speaker 2: thought that Bayard was tracking it and I thought he
- 9:38Speaker 2: was going to pick it.
- 9:38Speaker 1: He actually closed the gap pretty well. When the ball
- 9:41Speaker 1: was thrown, Wicks was all long.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and then uh and Wicks made the play on
- 9:44Speaker 2: the ball at the catch point. So I thought early
- 9:47Speaker 2: on some of the team periods the the Eagles offense
- 9:50Speaker 2: made some plays, especially in the run game, but as
- 9:53Speaker 2: each kind of team period passed, I thought the Patriots
- 9:56Speaker 2: defense got a couple of stuffs in the run game
- 10:00Speaker 2: in the second like kind of run early down team period,
- 10:03Speaker 2: and then in the one minute drill at the end
- 10:05Speaker 2: of practice, it was pressure, pressure, pressure right on Jalen
- 10:10Speaker 2: Hurts really getting home with some of those blitzes. How,
- 10:14Speaker 2: you know, starting just with the I guess concerns, I guess,
- 10:17Speaker 2: how where's your temperature right now with the run defense,
- 10:20Speaker 2: because I think it's been a little bit leagy.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah, well, it's been weird because they've been really good
- 10:25Speaker 1: when it's just Patriots versus Patriots. Yeah, and then the
- 10:28Speaker 1: Patriots come out in these joint practices and run the
- 10:30Speaker 1: ball well.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So it's like, okay, like.
- 10:33Speaker 1: The Patriots are running well against other teams, but they're
- 10:35Speaker 1: not running well against their own defense. You would, and
- 10:37Speaker 1: these other teams have good run defenses, the Colts and
- 10:39Speaker 1: the Eagles, So you think, okay, the Patriots run defense
- 10:42Speaker 1: probably pretty good. Now they've also faced Saquon Barkley and
- 10:46Speaker 1: and all that's around him, and Jonathan Taylor and all
- 10:48Speaker 1: that around him. To answer the question, of it.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 10:50Speaker 1: It's been very confusing. It's been a very confusing summer
- 10:53Speaker 1: for the run defense. I came in worried a little
- 10:56Speaker 1: bit just because I think the loss of Chius Tongo was,
- 10:58Speaker 1: you know, significant, So I guess I'll kind of go
- 11:01Speaker 1: with my gut. You know, they've looked better for most
- 11:06Speaker 1: of the summer, but the high impact practices haven't been
- 11:09Speaker 1: as impressive.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel the same way. I feel like this
- 11:14Speaker 2: was a little bit like this last summer too, that
- 11:17Speaker 2: they struggled with run defense and then they figured it
- 11:19Speaker 2: out for the regular season, and then obviously Seattle got
- 11:21Speaker 2: him right on the ground in the Super Bowl. So
- 11:24Speaker 2: you know, who was at a one off against Seattle
- 11:27Speaker 2: or Is that kind of the real run defense? Is
- 11:29Speaker 2: a fair question. I think that the thing that stood
- 11:31Speaker 2: out to me today though with the run defense is
- 11:34Speaker 2: there was a lot of runs with Saquan right up
- 11:36Speaker 2: the gut, and I wonder, you know, no bar more
- 11:39Speaker 2: yet instead some of those run period.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Right, he really only did like third down past right stuff.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Milton Williams is out there, Joshua Farmer, Corey Durden, like
- 11:47Speaker 2: those are the players that are playing inside right now.
- 11:50Speaker 2: For the Patriots. We all know that Milon Williams is
- 11:52Speaker 2: stud They did host an interesting visit yesterday with Daikwon Jones,
- 11:58Speaker 2: who is a four former Rabel tight end has played
- 12:02Speaker 2: a lot of nose tackle Mike Rabel in the past.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I just putting two and two together. They are a
- 12:09Speaker 2: little leaky in the run game against the Colts, bolt
- 12:11Speaker 2: in the game and in the joint practice. They were
- 12:14Speaker 2: a little leaky today in the run game defensively against
- 12:17Speaker 2: the Eagles. Are is Daikwon Jones on this roster by Monday?
- 12:22Speaker 2: You know, like, are we headed to that direction? As
- 12:25Speaker 2: something that popped up in my head just watching there.
- 12:27Speaker 1: It's just weird because we thought defensive tackle was the
- 12:30Speaker 1: strength of theirs even without.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Right now, I feel good about Barmore and Williams, and honestly,
- 12:36Speaker 2: I dirt and I think is okay.
- 12:37Speaker 1: But I mean, like Farmers having a nice summer, how
- 12:42Speaker 1: many how many defensive tackles do you think they really
- 12:44Speaker 1: want to rotate through?
- 12:45Speaker 2: I would say probably four, four five if you can
- 12:48Speaker 2: get the fun, you.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Know, if you keep Farmers the fifth guy and he's
- 12:50Speaker 1: kind of extra depth developmental. I think if Jones is
- 12:53Speaker 1: that third guy over dirt and it slots everybody in
- 12:55Speaker 1: a lot more naturally. I don't think it's a bad
- 12:57Speaker 1: group right now. This would be a luxury signing. I
- 13:00Speaker 1: don't think they need da Kwan Jones to be like
- 13:03Speaker 1: a really good team, but he'd certainly make them better. Yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 1: you know, if there is an edge equivalent of Dakwan Jones,
- 13:09Speaker 1: i'd rather have that player. I don't think there is
- 13:10Speaker 1: any more. So, like I see, I see the picture.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I don't think it's their biggest need. I think they're okay,
- 13:16Speaker 1: but I can definitely see like why they would add
- 13:18Speaker 1: him and what his role would be. I thought that,
- 13:20Speaker 1: I don't know if you want to get to the
- 13:21Speaker 1: other one here too, or we're going to jump around
- 13:24Speaker 1: the Shaq Thompson one.
- 13:25Speaker 6: Now.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I don't know where Shaq Thompson's at. He was actually better.
- 13:27Speaker 2: For the Bills last year, and I realized, yeah, just.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Watching some stuff back yesterday, but that one too, Like,
- 13:33Speaker 1: I think they have a I think they have more
- 13:35Speaker 1: of a need at linebacker than they do a defensive tackle.
- 13:38Speaker 2: But maybe it is line like and maybe it's both.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Maybe they can add both.
- 13:42Speaker 2: We're watching the run game in practice and just like,
- 13:44Speaker 2: to be honest about it, there's a lot of bodies
- 13:46Speaker 2: in there. Yeah, so like, is the defensive line getting moved?
- 13:49Speaker 2: Are the linebackers not coming down? Are they not fitting
- 13:52Speaker 2: the gaps? You know what?
- 13:54Speaker 1: That type of stuff, and they can add both. I
- 13:56Speaker 1: would say, I think at this point in their careers,
- 13:59Speaker 1: Dakwan Jones is probably a better player than Shaq Thompson.
- 14:02Speaker 1: But I think Shack Thompson actually helps the Patriots more
- 14:05Speaker 1: for as they're currently constructed.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Well, definitely, if Chad MoMA's hurt in that situation, I
- 14:11Speaker 2: think he was out there today, wasn't he? I saw
- 14:13Speaker 2: forty nine. I I didn't see him a ton in
- 14:16Speaker 2: the drills, but I saw him at practice physically at
- 14:19Speaker 2: practice just a you know something I thought of just
- 14:23Speaker 2: watching Barkley increase them a couple of times today, it
- 14:26Speaker 2: seemed like a lot of those runs were coming up
- 14:28Speaker 2: the middle, you know, obviously not so much towards Milton Williams,
- 14:32Speaker 2: but towards some of the depth guys that are filling
- 14:34Speaker 2: in for bar More and things like that. Let's, you know,
- 14:38Speaker 2: one more thing on the defense and then let's get
- 14:40Speaker 2: into some individual players and what we saw today. I
- 14:45Speaker 2: did not expect Elijah Ponder and Jermont Jones to do
- 14:49Speaker 2: a lot against Jordan Mylotta and Lane Johnson. But that
- 14:52Speaker 2: was a decisive victory for Jordan Mylotta and Lane Johnson
- 14:56Speaker 2: one on one's team. What have you? I thought the
- 15:00Speaker 2: Patriots edge rushers were nowhere near the quarterback and that
- 15:04Speaker 2: is something that we all have concerns about. I think,
- 15:07Speaker 2: are they going to get enough juice off the edge?
- 15:10Speaker 2: Is act is going to pick it up quickly enough
- 15:12Speaker 2: to be an impactful player as a rookie as a
- 15:15Speaker 2: pass rusher. I think we've seen some flashes, but we
- 15:17Speaker 2: need to see more out of him. It was a
- 15:19Speaker 2: lot of pondering Draymont Jones. I think Draymond Jones is
- 15:22Speaker 2: a guy that's going to be He's going to put
- 15:24Speaker 2: quarterbacks in the trash compactor, and he's going to push
- 15:27Speaker 2: the pocket, and he's going to bowl rush. He's going
- 15:29Speaker 2: to be effective on stunts. But I still felt like,
- 15:33Speaker 2: you know, we can give them some flowers on the
- 15:35Speaker 2: fact that when they blitzed, it seems like those blitzer
- 15:38Speaker 2: were getting home at will against the Eagles today, But
- 15:41Speaker 2: when they had to go to those standard four man rushes.
- 15:45Speaker 2: That's when it got a little bit more dicey in
- 15:47Speaker 2: terms of getting pressure on the quarterback. Rabel said the
- 15:50Speaker 2: same thing about the Colts practice last week, that they
- 15:52Speaker 2: didn't affect the quarterback enough. They didn't pressure the quarterback enough,
- 15:55Speaker 2: and that's why Daniel Jones had success in that practice.
- 15:58Speaker 2: So a little bit of the same, I would say
- 16:00Speaker 2: in terms of that. Now, I give them the caveat
- 16:04Speaker 2: this is maybe the best offensive line in football that
- 16:06Speaker 2: they think is today. If it's not the best, it's
- 16:09Speaker 2: top five. So the fact that their edge rushers, which
- 16:12Speaker 2: we know are a little bit of a weaker position
- 16:15Speaker 2: group for the Patriots, did not be maybe the best
- 16:18Speaker 2: left tackle and right tackle in football certainly the best
- 16:21Speaker 2: tandem in the league is probably how it should have gone.
- 16:25Speaker 2: But you know that's how it went. You know that
- 16:27Speaker 2: that's what we saw out there. So I was encouraged
- 16:31Speaker 2: by the fact that their blitz schemes seemed to really
- 16:33Speaker 2: hit when they ran those, especially in that final one
- 16:36Speaker 2: minute drill for Jalen Hurts. But when they just rushed
- 16:40Speaker 2: four and tried to get home with a standard four
- 16:42Speaker 2: man rush that they had a lot of time back there.
- 16:44Speaker 2: The Eagles quarterbacks.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Isn't that kind of what we think they're gonna be
- 16:48Speaker 1: it is?
- 16:48Speaker 2: Well, if it is, that's what you're gonna be, Aux,
- 16:50Speaker 2: and you better pay the cornerback.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, yes, you better get got These two
- 16:56Speaker 1: joint practices have been chrischian Zalez is watching from up
- 17:00Speaker 1: in that new build and probably you know.
- 17:02Speaker 2: He's going into the team meeting film after practice and
- 17:05Speaker 2: he's like.
- 17:08Speaker 1: He's not on the field. These have been decisive wins
- 17:09Speaker 1: for Christian Salace. But yeah, no, like, I don't know,
- 17:12Speaker 1: it's not you'd rather be able to get pressed with
- 17:14Speaker 1: four certainly that I don't think that's particularly how they're built.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Now we'll see when Landry gets back. I do think
- 17:20Speaker 1: Akis had a couple.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Moments I did too. They might have They might have.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Been against the second team. I'm trying to I was
- 17:26Speaker 1: mostly watching the offense. I just kind of looked at
- 17:28Speaker 1: the defense. It's not when it plays.
- 17:31Speaker 2: He's not a quick winner because he doesn't win with speed,
- 17:33Speaker 2: but he gets the like he impact.
- 17:36Speaker 1: He can impact the quarterback. Yeah, So was that against
- 17:39Speaker 1: my lotter or was that against.
- 17:41Speaker 2: I want to say, a second second team, But I
- 17:43Speaker 2: saw him flash a couple of so, you know, that's
- 17:47Speaker 2: kind of the thing.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I guess if you're looking I don't want to say
- 17:49Speaker 1: if you're looking for hope because that sounds maybe more
- 17:51Speaker 1: dramatic than it is, but yeah, if you're looking for
- 17:54Speaker 1: the pass rush pass Rush group. To surprise said by
- 17:58Speaker 1: somebody who's been kind of down on them, really the spring, yep,
- 18:02Speaker 1: gay Backus continues to flash and maybe he ends up
- 18:05Speaker 1: being more of an impact player right away than than
- 18:08Speaker 1: was expected, especially after he missed all that time in
- 18:10Speaker 1: the spring. I think they need them to be so right,
- 18:12Speaker 1: that's what you're looking for. Like, short of that, they
- 18:15Speaker 1: can get pressure when they blitz and some of these
- 18:16Speaker 1: they're doing some fun stuff with that. Yeah, like some
- 18:19Speaker 1: of the stuff that Zach Korr is drawing up, and
- 18:21Speaker 1: I'm sure Vrabel and all of them are a part
- 18:23Speaker 1: of it, Treyl Williams, But like, I think they're going
- 18:26Speaker 1: to be an effective blitz team. Having to live in
- 18:30Speaker 1: that versus having it as an option are two different things.
- 18:34Speaker 1: And it is kind of feel like it's it does
- 18:36Speaker 1: kind of feel like it's leaning towards they're going to
- 18:37Speaker 1: have to live in that. I don't know, I they're
- 18:38Speaker 1: gonna have the highest blitz rate in the NFL this year,
- 18:41Speaker 1: probably top five, certainly top ten. I think is what
- 18:44Speaker 1: we're trunning towards, so they're better when they do it.
- 18:47Speaker 1: And if you're going to live that way, you'd better
- 18:48Speaker 1: be able to pressure when you blitz. I'd go back
- 18:50Speaker 1: to the Mayo year when they called an engage eight
- 18:53Speaker 1: and still did not get pressure against. That was the
- 18:56Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford Cooper cup, like that's you have when you
- 19:00Speaker 1: because it's not that like Craig Woodson and I believe
- 19:04Speaker 1: had one or two pressures today, Marcus Jones had one.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Like you have to have guys from the second level,
- 19:09Speaker 1: third level that know what to do when they blitz.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Just because they blitz.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Doesn't mean they're gonna get pressure. They have to know
- 19:14Speaker 2: what to do.
- 19:15Speaker 1: I do think they have that. I think you saw
- 19:17Speaker 1: that today. That's more of a silver lining than like
- 19:19Speaker 1: a hey, this is great because they're still not getting
- 19:23Speaker 1: pressure with four. So we'll see what ultimately happens there.
- 19:26Speaker 1: But all signs point towards like this is gonna be
- 19:29Speaker 1: blitzem early, blitz them off in kind of defense.
- 19:32Speaker 2: So last thing on that it just as a way
- 19:34Speaker 2: to kind of exit. A good example from today's practice
- 19:37Speaker 2: on sort of the give and take with blitzing, or
- 19:41Speaker 2: you know, give it take it away, I guess I
- 19:43Speaker 2: should say. So they got a lot of pressure on
- 19:45Speaker 2: Jalen Hurds in that one minute trail. It was three
- 19:48Speaker 2: blitzer in a row, and all three of them got home.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Earlier on in the practice, they sent Robert Splaine up
- 19:53Speaker 2: the middle on a blitz and they dropped Elijah Ponder
- 19:56Speaker 2: out into coverage. We see that it's a replacement pressure.
- 19:59Speaker 2: It's pretty common pressure in the NFL. He blitz the offense,
- 20:04Speaker 2: he blitz the off ball linebacker, you drop the edge out. Well,
- 20:07Speaker 2: in this instance, Shipley ran a wheel route out of
- 20:10Speaker 2: the backfield and he ended up getting matched up against
- 20:13Speaker 2: Ponder on a wheel route out of the back till
- 20:16Speaker 2: and he be pondered for a huge play. And so
- 20:19Speaker 2: that's what when you blitz, that's what happens, right Like,
- 20:22Speaker 2: you're going to make some plays, but you're also going
- 20:23Speaker 2: to give up some plays. And that's why a lot
- 20:26Speaker 2: of teams, you know, really try to to be able
- 20:29Speaker 2: to be an effective four man rush team is because
- 20:31Speaker 2: you want to be a little bit more stable. Now,
- 20:33Speaker 2: I will say I don't think the Patriots are going
- 20:36Speaker 2: to have to heat up bad quarterbacks like I think
- 20:38Speaker 2: the Patriots can probably play a little bit more conservatively
- 20:42Speaker 2: against certain teams.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Don't play a lot of bad quarterbacks here.
- 20:45Speaker 2: They play enough. They play enough. They played four games
- 20:49Speaker 2: against the Jets and the Dolphins. That's enough of those,
- 20:51Speaker 2: you know, like those games. I think that you're going
- 20:54Speaker 2: to be able to play a more conventional, less aggressive
- 20:57Speaker 2: branded defense. The question is going to be, you know,
- 21:00Speaker 2: is against the good teams right against the Bills and
- 21:03Speaker 2: against the Seahawks, and against the Lions and against the
- 21:06Speaker 2: Broncos and teams like that. Let's go individual player. Let's
- 21:11Speaker 2: start with Drake May, who you know, it's always difficult,
- 21:15Speaker 2: I'd say, in these practices to gauge pressure like is
- 21:18Speaker 2: that would it have been a sack? Would not have
- 21:20Speaker 2: been a sack. But I thought for the most part,
- 21:22Speaker 2: Drake May just continues to throw the ball extremely well.
- 21:26Speaker 2: And today he had a string of there at one
- 21:31Speaker 2: point where we tracked him with what like thirteen straight
- 21:34Speaker 2: completions or something like that.
- 21:35Speaker 1: He didn't have an incompletion until the one minute trail.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he was really good. The one thing
- 21:40Speaker 2: that I think was the most effective, or not the
- 21:43Speaker 2: most effective, but just what I'm most encouraged by. Their
- 21:46Speaker 2: play action passing game has been dynamite all summer long.
- 21:50Speaker 2: They've been They have been able to hit explosive plays
- 21:54Speaker 2: off of play action plays over and over again. The
- 21:58Speaker 2: joint practices, both joint practices so far. You know, they're
- 22:01Speaker 2: working in the middle of the field today and against
- 22:04Speaker 2: the Colts last week. He starts it off with the
- 22:07Speaker 2: crossing route to pop Douglas off play action. Then he
- 22:09Speaker 2: hit aj Brown on a similar route off of play
- 22:12Speaker 2: action as well, and in the full team period, just
- 22:15Speaker 2: really effective play action passes. Josh McDaniel Staples he had
- 22:21Speaker 2: a half boot. The one to pop was like a
- 22:23Speaker 2: little half boot as well, which was good to see.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I think that, you know, Drake may has just been
- 22:28Speaker 2: really good. But I've really become even more encouraged by
- 22:33Speaker 2: that aspect because I don't think that that was necessarily
- 22:36Speaker 2: a strength of their team last year. Yeah, and it's
- 22:39Speaker 2: it's turning at least has been all summer long into
- 22:42Speaker 2: a strait.
- 22:42Speaker 1: How much of that is due to Eli Rorden could
- 22:45Speaker 1: be so let me combine too. How much does do
- 22:47Speaker 1: to the presence of Eli Roarden and Reggie gilliam A lot.
- 22:52Speaker 2: So I think with play action and like this is
- 22:54Speaker 2: like a philosophical thing to me, but whatever. With play action,
- 22:57Speaker 2: a lot of it is presentation, right, It's the four
- 23:00Speaker 2: that joy in exactly. It's the down and distance. It's
- 23:03Speaker 2: the personnel on the field. So when you have the
- 23:06Speaker 2: full back or you have multiple tight ends or whatever
- 23:08Speaker 2: on the field and then you come out in like
- 23:11Speaker 2: an I formation with the quarterback under center, you're just
- 23:14Speaker 2: in a run formation, right, You're in a run look.
- 23:17Speaker 2: And I think last year teams just didn't respect Jack
- 23:21Speaker 2: Westover like they when Jack Westover was on the field
- 23:24Speaker 2: as the full back, like, they just didn't really fear.
- 23:27Speaker 1: I think that runs that And then the reason I
- 23:29Speaker 1: brought up Raridon is they didn't respect Hooper as a
- 23:32Speaker 1: run blocker. Yeah, so you could, you know, play the
- 23:35Speaker 1: pass even when they were in heavy personnel. Raredon makes
- 23:38Speaker 1: it a little more multiple. Gilliams a little more product,
- 23:41Speaker 1: a little more polished as a full back. He can
- 23:44Speaker 1: also catch ball a little bit. We haven't really seen
- 23:46Speaker 1: a ton of that, but we know that's it as bag.
- 23:48Speaker 1: So that's just why I brought that up.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I just know that that's the like, it's the blocking scheme.
- 23:53Speaker 2: It's selling the blocking scheme and selling the fake and
- 23:55Speaker 2: then it's the presentation, the formation, the personnel that that's
- 23:59Speaker 2: you know, that's what it all is with play action,
- 24:01Speaker 2: because I think the UFWOO.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Teams didn't have to necessarily respect the Patriots when they
- 24:05Speaker 1: went heavy ledsure, or the third count when they would
- 24:07Speaker 1: just put the jumbo lineman in and they knew they
- 24:09Speaker 1: were and then they would come in heavy, but you weren't.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Gonna throw out of that.
- 24:12Speaker 1: So they're yeah, I think that you know, there's a
- 24:16Speaker 1: couple guys there's they're more varied out of those sets,
- 24:20Speaker 1: which is helping not play.
- 24:21Speaker 2: More dynamic, Like they're more of a threat. That's the
- 24:23Speaker 2: thank you is the word I was looking for. Dynamic.
- 24:25Speaker 2: They're more of a threat. And they have guys at receiver,
- 24:28Speaker 2: whether it's aj Brown, Dobbs, even Mac Collins that can
- 24:32Speaker 2: really block as well out of those positions, and so
- 24:35Speaker 2: they've had some real fun with those, you know, even
- 24:37Speaker 2: some like real jumbo packages where it's two tight ends,
- 24:41Speaker 2: two backs, you know, the full back, the running back
- 24:44Speaker 2: and just one receiver out on the field, and those
- 24:46Speaker 2: are tough to stop because they they're they're really loaded
- 24:50Speaker 2: up and they can run the football out of it.
- 24:52Speaker 2: We went twenty five minutes into the show and really
- 24:54Speaker 2: haven't talked a ton about AJ Brown event. It's probably
- 24:57Speaker 2: going to be the story of the practice. I think
- 24:59Speaker 2: I I had him with seven catches in team today.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I didn't track the seven on sevens, but just in
- 25:05Speaker 2: the eleven on elevens plus the seven on sevens, I
- 25:08Speaker 2: think it's about seven or eight catches or whatever. It
- 25:11Speaker 2: ended up being three really big plays. Though I mentioned
- 25:14Speaker 2: the crossing route and then the play of the day
- 25:17Speaker 2: if it got off, I don't know, like it might
- 25:19Speaker 2: have been a sack, like there was pressure in Drake
- 25:21Speaker 2: May's face with Jihad Campbell. But the play of the
- 25:24Speaker 2: day was that back foot tier drop that Drake May
- 25:27Speaker 2: threw to AJ Brown down the right sideline, just perfectly
- 25:30Speaker 2: over his shoulder, and AJ Brown made it a toe
- 25:33Speaker 2: tapping catch and caught it in bounds. They were on
- 25:36Speaker 2: fire today, the two of those guys and AJ Brown.
- 25:39Speaker 2: It wasn't I don't even think it was like necessarily
- 25:41Speaker 2: that it was the Eagles, Like, I think that was
- 25:43Speaker 2: maybe some motivation, but it wasn't like that was It
- 25:47Speaker 2: wasn't outward motivation, like you didn't see him like show
- 25:50Speaker 2: modeing or anything, but it was it was impressive.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I think you listened to him talk after practice and
- 25:57Speaker 1: like he clearly felt it, but he didn't outwardly like
- 26:02Speaker 1: like you said, there was no expression of it. I
- 26:04Speaker 1: did think it was a cool moment. The first competitive
- 26:07Speaker 1: rep of the day, which was one on ones, they
- 26:10Speaker 1: go right in front of those bleachers there left sideline,
- 26:12Speaker 1: a J. Brown, Quinian Mitchell, crowds going nuts before the
- 26:15Speaker 1: balls even snapped, Like when they saw A J.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Brown go out, there's kind of a cool moment. That's
- 26:19Speaker 2: literally what they all came for.
- 26:20Speaker 1: And then it was incomplete. Did you have Mitchell with
- 26:23Speaker 1: a hold on that? Could you give a pass?
- 26:25Speaker 2: Break up?
- 26:25Speaker 1: So we ran to go up the left sideline. Drake
- 26:26Speaker 1: put it at the front pie line. It looked like
- 26:28Speaker 1: Brown had a shot on it. I think Eagles fans
- 26:31Speaker 1: are going to say was a drop. Patriots fans are
- 26:32Speaker 1: going to say it.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Was a hold.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Brown had am beat like Brown cleared them. So I
- 26:37Speaker 1: don't know what you saw on that.
- 26:38Speaker 2: But yeah, I thought it was a little bit of
- 26:40Speaker 2: a hold. But I think that you know, I probably
- 26:44Speaker 2: give that one to Quinon Mitchell just because it's a
- 26:47Speaker 2: tough drail for a corner, right, I mean, you're on
- 26:49Speaker 2: an island against at all pro receiver. If you even
- 26:53Speaker 2: just force it incompletion and it's not a blatant flag,
- 26:56Speaker 2: I kind of give that to the defense. But I
- 26:59Speaker 2: thought in general it was it was kind of the A. J.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Brown Show. It wasn't as when we were in Minnesota
- 27:05Speaker 2: last year for the joint practices with the Vikings. Stefan
- 27:09Speaker 2: Diggs on the I want to say it was the
- 27:11Speaker 2: first day of practice just put on an absolute clinic.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I mean, he was just feeling his oats, and I
- 27:17Speaker 2: think that was because he was back in a place
- 27:19Speaker 2: where that traded him and he felt had a little
- 27:22Speaker 2: bit of extra motivation for that practice. I didn't think
- 27:25Speaker 2: that this was quite the same showman type stuff. But
- 27:30Speaker 2: this was just like clinical, like we're just we're out
- 27:33Speaker 2: here and and and you know, we're making plays. The
- 27:36Speaker 2: other guy wanted to highlight on the offense, So well,
- 27:41Speaker 2: let's actually say that one. We'll get to three. That
- 27:43Speaker 2: in three up three down. What did you think of
- 27:45Speaker 2: Will Campbell's day, Because I know some of the Eagles
- 27:47Speaker 2: reporters were a little bit critical of Campbell and said
- 27:50Speaker 2: that Jaye lik Sun, you know, beat him pretty good
- 27:52Speaker 2: on a handful of reps. I kind of had it
- 27:55Speaker 2: as like an okay day, fine, I think, I said
- 27:58Speaker 2: to you after practice. He was fine. Yeah, I didn't
- 28:00Speaker 2: think it was a disaster like last year against Greenard
- 28:03Speaker 2: in Minnesota was a disaster, like that was a bad
- 28:06Speaker 2: day of practice. This I felt was more even than that.
- 28:09Speaker 2: But this was probably the first time this summer that
- 28:11Speaker 2: I saw Campbell with some decisive losses. He had a
- 28:15Speaker 2: bad loss to Hunt in the one on one drills
- 28:18Speaker 2: and he got beat a team by him by on
- 28:20Speaker 2: one rep as well. So a summer there where I
- 28:23Speaker 2: think he's basically pitched a shutout. Yeah, this was maybe
- 28:26Speaker 2: the first sign of a little bit of trouble little
- 28:28Speaker 2: back down Earth.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I would say he was okay. It wasn't alarming or
- 28:32Speaker 1: anything like you mentioned, like Grenard last year really got him.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I thought one win, one loss in one on ones.
- 28:40Speaker 1: There was one that I thought was a sack in team.
- 28:43Speaker 1: I think it was Hunt again, But everybody at my
- 28:45Speaker 1: depth perception sucks. Everybody was saying, and you were upstairs
- 28:49Speaker 1: right so here to got to wrangle. Everybody was saying
- 28:50Speaker 1: that Campbell pushed Hunt maybe around the horn.
- 28:52Speaker 2: That's how I saw it. I know which one you're
- 28:55Speaker 2: talking about. I thought he got him at least far
- 28:58Speaker 2: enough past the quarterback. Now, maybe May did slide up
- 29:01Speaker 2: a little bit, so maybe he did feel him a
- 29:03Speaker 2: little bit, but it wasn't like it wasn't a loss.
- 29:05Speaker 1: No, Yeah, So I thought there was one where he
- 29:07Speaker 1: kind of got pushed back and beat. I think you
- 29:10Speaker 1: said you had him with two pressures. I had him
- 29:11Speaker 1: at one, but I might could have missed one and
- 29:14Speaker 1: then splitting the one on one. So I mean, you know, again,
- 29:18Speaker 1: it's not Pina sul right. You know, he's not Joe Thomas.
- 29:21Speaker 1: We know that he's gonna get beat. But against that front,
- 29:25Speaker 1: I'm okay. If that's kind of what he is all year. Yeah,
- 29:28Speaker 1: that's a starting caliber left tackle, Like I think you
- 29:30Speaker 1: can live with that. So not quite as good as
- 29:33Speaker 1: he was the rest of the summer. Definitely, you know,
- 29:35Speaker 1: tempering a little bit from that, but like not alarm.
- 29:39Speaker 1: He was fine.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd like to see how it comes out tomorrow. Yeah,
- 29:42Speaker 2: you know, Hunt will be against him again. I'm sure
- 29:45Speaker 2: most of the practice tomorrow, they're going to be more
- 29:46Speaker 2: in the red zone tomorrow, I think, so it's not
- 29:49Speaker 2: as much in the open field. But it'll be interesting
- 29:52Speaker 2: to see how he does tomorrow against Hunt after you know,
- 29:55Speaker 2: seeing him a little bit today. I highly doubt that
- 29:58Speaker 2: he has very much familiarity with Jalen's like I don't.
- 30:00Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 30:01Speaker 1: The only one I think we saw were we talking
- 30:03Speaker 1: about this on the air off the I can't even remember.
- 30:05Speaker 1: That's how drained I am thirty minutes into the show. Uh,
- 30:09Speaker 1: Jared Wilson.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna get the Jared Wilson here in a second.
- 30:12Speaker 2: I want to go low move first, and then I
- 30:13Speaker 2: got Jared Wilson next.
- 30:14Speaker 1: I'll be honest, I did not when the second team
- 30:17Speaker 1: offense was on the field. I was more watching the
- 30:18Speaker 1: defense because I wanted to see the corners. I did
- 30:20Speaker 1: not see a ton of Loan move today, So please
- 30:21Speaker 1: tell me how he did.
- 30:22Speaker 2: So Lomu I thought was up and down like he
- 30:25Speaker 2: hit like per usual with him. Right now, there was
- 30:28Speaker 2: a three play sequence. I'll read it out to you
- 30:30Speaker 2: because I thought it was It was very telling of
- 30:32Speaker 2: like kind of the summer that I think that Caleb
- 30:35Speaker 2: Blomoo has had. So he had a the first rep
- 30:39Speaker 2: they ran outside zone. He was on the backside of
- 30:41Speaker 2: outside zone. He had a great backside reach block on
- 30:44Speaker 2: outside zone that Jan Miller cut off his hip and
- 30:48Speaker 2: went up the field on. It was like a you know,
- 30:50Speaker 2: plus block, like really good block. The very next play
- 30:54Speaker 2: he got swim swim moved over him for a pressure.
- 30:58Speaker 2: The next play after that he fell off a front
- 31:00Speaker 2: side block and it was a stuffed run. So it
- 31:03Speaker 2: was like one really outstanding block followed by two not
- 31:08Speaker 2: so good blocks. And that's just life of a roop.
- 31:11Speaker 1: And that's what he's been. It's like you see I
- 31:13Speaker 1: said this. You watch one rep and you're like, yeah,
- 31:16Speaker 1: that guy looks like a first round pick. And then
- 31:17Speaker 1: you watch another rep and you're like, yeah, that looks
- 31:19Speaker 1: like a guy that's changing positions and is a rookie.
- 31:21Speaker 1: So it's just you know, that balance and the developments
- 31:24Speaker 1: coming along. I wonder if they thought he maybe come
- 31:27Speaker 1: along a little bit quicker, but you see the talent.
- 31:31Speaker 1: The talent's there. It's the consistency that really has to
- 31:34Speaker 1: come together.
- 31:34Speaker 2: I would say the backside block that he made on
- 31:37Speaker 2: the Miller run that I just mentioned was probably the
- 31:39Speaker 2: best run block I saw any Patriot lineman make all day.
- 31:42Speaker 2: It was really nice block. Yeah, now's the twos on twos,
- 31:44Speaker 2: but it was a really nice block. But then her
- 31:47Speaker 2: credits to follow it up in the same exact series
- 31:50Speaker 2: with two you know, bone blocks right after. It is
- 31:53Speaker 2: just such a great kind of microcosm of what his
- 31:56Speaker 2: summer has looked like. I also thought he's stone epinez
- 32:00Speaker 2: a in there one on one. I didn't see Lomo's
- 32:02Speaker 2: second one on one, but the first one that he
- 32:04Speaker 2: went up against Epen as a first he tried to
- 32:07Speaker 2: beat him outside, realized he wasn't gonna beat him outside,
- 32:10Speaker 2: and he tried to spin back up in the pocket
- 32:12Speaker 2: and Lomu matched him both ways. So that was an
- 32:14Speaker 2: impressive rep. I thought that was a good sign. Played
- 32:17Speaker 2: bold tackle spots played a little bit on the left
- 32:20Speaker 2: and a little bit on the right. You know, him
- 32:21Speaker 2: and Marcus Bryan are on the same program like right,
- 32:24Speaker 2: Usually it's Brian starts on the left and Lomo starts
- 32:27Speaker 2: on the right, and then at some point. In practice,
- 32:29Speaker 2: they flip and Brian goes to the right and Lomu
- 32:32Speaker 2: goes to the left. It's interesting to me though, that
- 32:35Speaker 2: that still continues to be kind of an even competition,
- 32:39Speaker 2: if you will, Like I think Marcus Brian is still
- 32:41Speaker 2: continuing to push Lomu as the top swing tackle, but uh,
- 32:46Speaker 2: you know, Lomu just kind of riding the roller coaster
- 32:49Speaker 2: still a little bit.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Uh.
- 32:50Speaker 2: You mentioned Jared Wilson two really good one on one
- 32:54Speaker 2: reps against Jordan Davis. Now, Jordan Davis is not a
- 32:57Speaker 2: pass rusher necessarily. He is a pocket den or in
- 33:00Speaker 2: an outstanding run defender, but not necessarily known for his
- 33:04Speaker 2: finesse and you know his ability to win one on
- 33:07Speaker 2: one pass rush. But he Wilson got powerful. He got
- 33:12Speaker 2: underneath Jordan Davis and leveraged him and then put his
- 33:16Speaker 2: hands up in his chest and stopped Jordan Davis in
- 33:18Speaker 2: his tracks on one of the reps, like I think
- 33:20Speaker 2: Davis didn't even move, uh you know, he stonewalledom completely.
- 33:25Speaker 2: For Jared Wilson to be able to do that against
- 33:27Speaker 2: such a big dude and Jordan Davis was really impressive.
- 33:30Speaker 2: I thought most of their good runs were either center,
- 33:34Speaker 2: you know, a gap center or to the B gap
- 33:37Speaker 2: on the left side between Campbell and Verattucker. So Wilson's
- 33:40Speaker 2: you know, pretty involved in some of those blocks as
- 33:43Speaker 2: well at the point of attack in the run game.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I thought this was a really promising practice for Jared Wilson.
- 33:48Speaker 2: And I thought he was okay against Grover Stewart last
- 33:51Speaker 2: week too. And Grover Stewart's a big dude too, and
- 33:54Speaker 2: tough dude to move, so he paced two guys. We've
- 33:57Speaker 2: concerns about Jared Wilson in power and being able to
- 34:00Speaker 2: hold up against the big nose Town Athletics center, both
- 34:03Speaker 2: Jordan Davis and Grover Stewart. I thought Grover Stewart was
- 34:06Speaker 2: better against him than Davis.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Was, which was kind of nuts because David's a better player.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Grocer is a really underrated player too, though I'll
- 34:13Speaker 2: take Jordan Davis Grover Stewart. I thought it was a
- 34:15Speaker 2: little bit better Davis than Davis against Wilson. But I
- 34:18Speaker 2: think in both instances, and we keep saying the words
- 34:21Speaker 2: held up like he held up like it didn't look
- 34:24Speaker 2: like a total disaster. But that one one on rep,
- 34:26Speaker 2: one on one rep by Jordan Jared Wilson was probably
- 34:29Speaker 2: the best one of the day for the Patriots. I
- 34:31Speaker 2: mean that was.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Well absolutely right after that, Mike Oh and win who
- 34:35Speaker 1: Stonewall Jayalen Carter Yeah, on the next one. So those
- 34:38Speaker 1: two back to back are like, oh, like, those are
- 34:40Speaker 1: two guys that are towards top of the league at
- 34:43Speaker 1: what they do. Yeah, and not that Michael when Jared
- 34:46Speaker 1: Wilson are bad players, but those it's not just that
- 34:48Speaker 1: they beat it. They I mean it was a clean,
- 34:50Speaker 1: decisive win for both of them.
- 34:53Speaker 2: It was good. So that stood out. That was And
- 34:55Speaker 2: then I think.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Nolan Carter beat Morgan Moses on Mils rap Nolan Smith,
- 35:00Speaker 1: thank you. So couldn't go three for three, but uh yeah,
- 35:04Speaker 1: good to And I'm trying to remember who VERA. Tucker
- 35:08Speaker 1: had disnounted before that.
- 35:09Speaker 2: So Verry Tucker went up I think he went up
- 35:12Speaker 2: against one of like their backup defensive tackles and lost
- 35:15Speaker 2: the rep. Which I was actually pretty surprised by. It
- 35:19Speaker 2: was Usir Bernard, Like I we know a lot of names,
- 35:24Speaker 2: we know a lot of names. Bars, I don't know
- 35:26Speaker 2: that name.
- 35:26Speaker 1: I don't know who Bernard. No, he was like a
- 35:29Speaker 1: whole thing in the draft.
- 35:29Speaker 2: You don't remember this.
- 35:30Speaker 1: No Brugler wrote about who's the fake Sidfinch? You don't
- 35:34Speaker 1: know who's his?
- 35:35Speaker 2: Like for me to not know a name, like for
- 35:37Speaker 2: one of us to not know.
- 35:42Speaker 1: It wasn't it was one of those other draft guys
- 35:45Speaker 1: started reporting on him literally on April second, and I
- 35:50Speaker 1: remember the date because I remember thinking, if you did
- 35:53Speaker 1: this on April first, everybody would think it's a joke
- 35:59Speaker 1: because of the name.
- 36:00Speaker 2: No, Ubernard is not from Apparently, I thought he was
- 36:03Speaker 2: not real from Nigeria.
- 36:06Speaker 1: He came as an international pathway player, Evan you're ready.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Yes, I'm ready, six to five, yeah.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Three oh six, thirty six inch arms, four point six
- 36:15Speaker 1: forty with a one point five split, a four point
- 36:19Speaker 1: five shuttle, thirty nine inch vertical, ten foot ten broad jump.
- 36:23Speaker 1: The dudes are freak like.
- 36:25Speaker 2: So he did not go to college in the United States.
- 36:27Speaker 1: No, he he came through that like NFL Academy thing whatever.
- 36:33Speaker 1: He's like he I think he is the highest RIS
- 36:35Speaker 1: score of all time. He's top five, and nobody knew
- 36:38Speaker 1: about him till they did the International Combine in April
- 36:40Speaker 1: and he started blowing up, and of course the Eagles
- 36:42Speaker 1: took him. He's like, never played football, but he's an elite,
- 36:45Speaker 1: like elite of the elite athletes.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Veritucker right around the edge, right around his outside hit
- 36:51Speaker 2: and I when I tracked the reb I had to
- 36:55Speaker 2: because we were talking about this off the air. The
- 36:57Speaker 2: Eagles practice jerseys are terrible. Numbers on them are horrible.
- 37:01Speaker 2: It's really hard to read. I thought when I first
- 37:04Speaker 2: watched it that it was Moro Jomo, Like, I was like,
- 37:07Speaker 2: it's definitely Moro Jomo, who basically replaced Melon Williams and
- 37:10Speaker 2: their defense is like their three tech on pass rush situations.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I was like, okay, like you know, Jomo's a good
- 37:15Speaker 2: player like that, that whatever. And then I looked at
- 37:18Speaker 2: the number and I was like, no, that's definitely a
- 37:20Speaker 2: ninety three. And it was.
- 37:21Speaker 1: It was so the whole thing was like six percent
- 37:24Speaker 1: body fat. He's just he's a rare, rare, rare, rare athlete. Yeah,
- 37:30Speaker 1: they're going to try to turn into a football player.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Well, he was pretty good, good at least on that.
- 37:36Speaker 2: I get a good rep.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Thirty nine inch vertical at three hundred and six pounds, Yeah,
- 37:41Speaker 1: that's absurd.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a good rep. Verry Tucker doesn't lose
- 37:45Speaker 2: a ton of one on ones, so that was a
- 37:48Speaker 2: good reph going over to the defense, just some individual guys,
- 37:52Speaker 2: where are we at with with gay Bacchus Because I
- 37:55Speaker 2: did some defending of gay Bacchus and on Patriots Unfiltered
- 37:59Speaker 2: earlier today during practice. I would so much rather the
- 38:04Speaker 2: mistakes that gay Bacus is making right now than it
- 38:07Speaker 2: to look like he doesn't belong in then NFL field.
- 38:10Speaker 2: I feel like he looks the part completely on the field,
- 38:13Speaker 2: walking off the bus. All the above. I think his
- 38:16Speaker 2: power is translating. I think his body type fits the league.
- 38:19Speaker 2: I think his mentality and his physicality fits the league.
- 38:22Speaker 2: It's between the ears, like he just got to figure
- 38:24Speaker 2: it out mentally, he just got to read plays a
- 38:26Speaker 2: little bit better and react to plays a little bit better.
- 38:29Speaker 2: I thought today he would flashing there. A couple of
- 38:31Speaker 2: times he got Miles hinted in one on ones on
- 38:34Speaker 2: a bull rush. I just continue to see fifty active,
- 38:38Speaker 2: Like I think he's active in these practices. Doesn't mean
- 38:41Speaker 2: he's perfect. He's got a lot to work on, I
- 38:43Speaker 2: think in terms of play recognition and things like that.
- 38:46Speaker 2: But coming out of that preseason game. I thought people
- 38:48Speaker 2: were too low on what he put on tape. I
- 38:51Speaker 2: really do. I think it was some a couple of
- 38:53Speaker 2: bad you know, kind of over aggressive getting out of
- 38:56Speaker 2: his lanes type of situations on screens and stuff like that.
- 39:00Speaker 2: But for the most part I thought that he it
- 39:02Speaker 2: all translated like he can bull rush, tackles back into quarterbacks,
- 39:06Speaker 2: he can set an edge, he plays with an edge,
- 39:08Speaker 2: like that's all the things we thought we were gonna
- 39:10Speaker 2: get out of akuts.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's just how do you let him play
- 39:13Speaker 1: so aggressively without playing out of control?
- 39:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and they're gonna let him be.
- 39:17Speaker 1: I don't want to say undisciplined to an extent, but
- 39:19Speaker 1: we know the layer on the side of aggression.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Obviously you can't be blowing assignments.
- 39:22Speaker 1: So that was always going to kind of be the
- 39:24Speaker 1: thing with him is how do you kind of rain
- 39:26Speaker 1: not rain in his aggression, but bottle it and make
- 39:29Speaker 1: sure it's used the right way.
- 39:30Speaker 2: So and he's a little bit more in his portfolio
- 39:32Speaker 2: as a pass rusher, like there needs to be some
- 39:34Speaker 2: other counter besides power in a bull rush that he
- 39:39Speaker 2: can go to. Whether you know a lot of bull
- 39:41Speaker 2: rushers like use a ghost or something like that, because
- 39:44Speaker 2: they'll show the punch or show the long arm and
- 39:47Speaker 2: then kind of dip. I don't know if he has
- 39:49Speaker 2: the flexibility to do that. Maybe it's an inside counter.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Like if guys are setting back and catching him in
- 39:55Speaker 2: a bull rush, he can maybe inside. Well, that's gonna say.
- 39:57Speaker 1: What would you consider the best counter to a power move.
- 40:03Speaker 2: If you can't ghost, like if you can't speed a
- 40:05Speaker 2: dip because you don't have the flexibility, I would say
- 40:08Speaker 2: an inside counter because like a lot of guys, if
- 40:11Speaker 2: they have bull rushers, they're not gonna sit back and
- 40:13Speaker 2: catch you right. They're gonna come and get you there.
- 40:15Speaker 2: They're gonna try to ruin your momentum because they if
- 40:18Speaker 2: they're not, gonna want to get pushed back into the quarterback.
- 40:21Speaker 2: So a lot of those times the bull rushers, like
- 40:23Speaker 2: they get guys that quick set them and just come
- 40:25Speaker 2: right at them and are aggressive with the passet. So
- 40:28Speaker 2: if you could develop like a swim or an arm
- 40:30Speaker 2: over or like a quick win inside, then you can
- 40:33Speaker 2: swim around those guys. You can go jump inside of
- 40:36Speaker 2: them and jump the inside gap. That's what I would say.
- 40:38Speaker 2: It would be like the nice counter for him. I
- 40:41Speaker 2: wish that he had a little bit more speed and
- 40:43Speaker 2: bend off the edge, but that's just not his game.
- 40:45Speaker 2: That's not who he is, right So I don't think
- 40:47Speaker 2: the Harold Landry ghost rush is going to be in
- 40:49Speaker 2: his toolbox. But Harold Landry has it because he's forty five. Yeah,
- 40:56Speaker 2: Dak is two sixty. So it's just a different type
- 40:59Speaker 2: of athlete. But I would give him some grace. I
- 41:02Speaker 2: think that the physical traits or the tools that you
- 41:05Speaker 2: see physically are are translating. He's just got to figure
- 41:08Speaker 2: it out, Like he's just got to figure out the
- 41:10Speaker 2: game at this level, the speed of the game. A
- 41:13Speaker 2: couple more notes here and then we'll open it up.
- 41:17Speaker 2: John Saunders just around the ball again. It was it
- 41:20Speaker 2: was against the threes, it was against the Telegram. Read
- 41:24Speaker 2: it like a book. I'm going to give him that.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Hassan Haskins just continues to I think it's running back.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm telling you right now, he has a lot
- 41:34Speaker 1: of good things real quick on Saunders. Yeah, you mentioned
- 41:38Speaker 1: the ball keeps coming right to him, right to him
- 41:41Speaker 1: at a certain point, Like you get one of those
- 41:43Speaker 1: and it's like all the quarterback through right to him,
- 41:45Speaker 1: all right, whatever kind of knows for it out right
- 41:47Speaker 1: once you get how many of them do you get
- 41:48Speaker 1: to get before we start saying, hey, he might have
- 41:50Speaker 1: really good instincts. Yeah, and instincts are so important at
- 41:53Speaker 1: the safety position. I think he's ahead of Mike Brown
- 41:55Speaker 1: right now.
- 41:55Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Him and del Pettis are kind of different players. I
- 41:58Speaker 1: think in a perfect world you keep both because they
- 42:01Speaker 1: can sort of do different things for you. But you know, again,
- 42:04Speaker 1: it was with the lower unit, and it's not like
- 42:07Speaker 1: he's been unbelievable. Between these picks. He's been fine. He
- 42:10Speaker 1: hasn't been bad. But like when you get this many picks,
- 42:13Speaker 1: it's not a coincidence.
- 42:14Speaker 2: It's just not so. Del Pettis is a downhill player.
- 42:17Speaker 2: R del Pettis is more. This is the deep. Pittis
- 42:19Speaker 2: is a balk safety. He can lay the wood, he
- 42:22Speaker 2: can blitz and come down hill at the line of scrimmage.
- 42:25Speaker 2: And if you need somebody to blitz and fill the
- 42:27Speaker 2: b gap, del Pennis can do that. If you want
- 42:30Speaker 2: somebody that can cover in the back end, then.
- 42:32Speaker 1: That's John says the box safety, deep safety, free safety,
- 42:35Speaker 1: strong safety, Kyle Chung, Devin mccordy kind of thing.
- 42:38Speaker 2: That's why I keep going gravitating feel myself gravitating towards Saunders. Yeah.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Is because their type is more sunders. Yeah, like fired
- 42:48Speaker 2: Woodson Hawkins last year. Like this is why Kyle Duggar
- 42:52Speaker 2: and Jabriel Pepper's got pushed off the roster, right, is
- 42:54Speaker 2: because they want their safeties to play twelve yards off
- 42:57Speaker 2: the ball, playing the deep part of the field. They're
- 42:59Speaker 2: gonna cover tight ends and they're also going to cover
- 43:01Speaker 2: slot receivers and in certain formation sounds.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Have you watched any of saunders college tape? No, So
- 43:08Speaker 1: he was a corner at first in college, and there's
- 43:10Speaker 1: like decent reps. Obviously he's better safety. There's some like okay,
- 43:14Speaker 1: like man coverage reps on there. Yeah, for safety, I.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Believe it, okay, because he's got good he's got good
- 43:19Speaker 2: feel for coverage. And if I had to guess, Pettis
- 43:22Speaker 2: is going to be on the team for special teams
- 43:24Speaker 2: and maybe as.
- 43:25Speaker 1: A box sometimes they want that, you know, ball and
- 43:27Speaker 1: they're also thinner linebackers, so it makes sense to keep
- 43:29Speaker 1: a guy like that.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Yeah, But I think Saunders is more their prototype at
- 43:34Speaker 2: that position, and he keeps on finding the ball and
- 43:38Speaker 2: he want comfortable in the back end.
- 43:39Speaker 1: And at a certain point it's not a coincidence.
- 43:41Speaker 2: We talked to him, was that it was over the weekend.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Maybe these days started to play together Saturday or Sunday,
- 43:47Speaker 2: and I was I asked him about playing more in
- 43:51Speaker 2: the box, because I know in college he played more
- 43:53Speaker 2: deep in free safety, and he said that he he's
- 43:57Speaker 2: getting better at it, but he really feels more comfortable
- 43:59Speaker 2: playing in the d part of the field, like that's
- 44:01Speaker 2: his specialty. He's like six two two oh five, so
- 44:04Speaker 2: he's got some size and he's got some length to
- 44:07Speaker 2: like go up and get the ball and high point
- 44:08Speaker 2: the ball. And he looks like, yeah, it's an interesting
- 44:13Speaker 2: player of like body type. Like I'm not trying to
- 44:15Speaker 2: make him. I know I'm kind of making him sound
- 44:17Speaker 2: like Ed Reid, but like I just feel like we
- 44:21Speaker 2: I don't want to. You know, last summer it was
- 44:23Speaker 2: all Jabriel Peppers and Kyle Dugger and Kyle Dugger and
- 44:27Speaker 2: Jabriel Peppers, and all of a sudden, by the end
- 44:29Speaker 2: of the summer, neither one of those guys was on
- 44:30Speaker 2: the right. Well, pet Dugger was for a little while,
- 44:32Speaker 2: but it was obviously Hawkins and Woodson's backfield at some point.
- 44:37Speaker 2: It's it's not gonna be Saunders as a star a starter,
- 44:40Speaker 2: But would it shock you if he's the third safety
- 44:42Speaker 2: at some point just because of the way he plays well?
- 44:45Speaker 1: Then I think you get into the short answer, no
- 44:50Speaker 1: long answer. Then I think you get into the game
- 44:52Speaker 1: plan stuff. And this is why, to go back to
- 44:53Speaker 1: something talked about earlier and why I think there's room
- 44:55Speaker 1: for him and Pettis. And in a given matchup, would
- 45:00Speaker 1: do you want your third safety to do? Do you
- 45:01Speaker 1: want him to blitz and play in the box and
- 45:03Speaker 1: spy the quarterback or do you want him to play
- 45:05Speaker 1: deep When you're playing, say the Bills, maybe a guy
- 45:08Speaker 1: like del Pettis makes a little more sense as kind
- 45:10Speaker 1: of a quarterback spy. Yeah, if you're playing a team
- 45:12Speaker 1: that I'm trying to think of a team on their
- 45:14Speaker 1: schedule that's like very vertical in the passing game, I
- 45:17Speaker 1: guess Seattle kind of like right out of the gate. Yeah,
- 45:20Speaker 1: maybe that drawn harmon type third safety. So in some games, yes,
- 45:25Speaker 1: I think having him and Pettis allows you just to
- 45:28Speaker 1: add more rables to the defense, which is so in
- 45:31Speaker 1: some cases yes, in some cases no, but they're in
- 45:33Speaker 1: those cases that you want to do it.
- 45:35Speaker 2: I think he's a good player for that role. I
- 45:38Speaker 2: wonder too, just lasting on this, Craig Woodson has been
- 45:41Speaker 2: really effective near the ball this summer, near the line
- 45:45Speaker 2: of scrimmage, blitzing, playing the run. We saw that in
- 45:49Speaker 2: the playoffs last year a little bit too, especially in
- 45:51Speaker 2: the Super Bowl, just flying around towards the football. If
- 45:54Speaker 2: you want to unlock Craig Woodson to just kind of
- 45:57Speaker 2: hunt the football, and you have the two guys back
- 46:00Speaker 2: and buyer it and Saunders like more of that if
- 46:03Speaker 2: you want to like what I'm saying is I guess
- 46:05Speaker 2: is like maybe Woodson's the big, the big nickel, maybe
- 46:08Speaker 2: he's the big diamebacker. Maybe he's the third safety, right,
- 46:13Speaker 2: and then Saunders is kind of the back end guy
- 46:16Speaker 2: that is the Deron Harmon, right. Yeah, you know that
- 46:18Speaker 2: sort of thing where we've been looking at it like
- 46:20Speaker 2: maybe it's Mike Brown in the box, Maybe it's Del
- 46:23Speaker 2: Pettis in the box. I actually wonder if they get
- 46:26Speaker 2: to a point where they say it's actually Craig Woodson
- 46:28Speaker 2: in the box, right, and we're gonna put John Saunders
- 46:31Speaker 2: on the field with Kevin Bayern and that that's how
- 46:33Speaker 2: we're gonna get to three safeties. Last thing here, and
- 46:37Speaker 2: then we're gonna take a quick break, and then we're
- 46:39Speaker 2: gonna open up with all your calls and emails and well,
- 46:42Speaker 2: we're also gonna do three up, three down for the
- 46:43Speaker 2: last week of training camp. So the joint practices against
- 46:47Speaker 2: the Colts and the Eagles, the preseason game, all that
- 46:50Speaker 2: baked into one. I have one last nugget I wanted
- 46:52Speaker 2: to get to though. Where are we at? Where it's
- 46:55Speaker 2: your temperature? The fourth quarterback thing is starting to worry me.
- 46:59Speaker 2: I know I was the last one on this train. Yeah,
- 47:01Speaker 2: I'll be the last one on it. I guess Charles
- 47:05Speaker 2: Woods has not been good since he came back from
- 47:07Speaker 2: I think was concussion protocol. He was back at practice
- 47:10Speaker 2: in the red jersey, which usually that's what that signals.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Kendall Vildor did have the pick today, but I mean
- 47:16Speaker 2: it wasn't real. I thought that. The last couple of
- 47:19Speaker 2: practices without Gonzales, it's been it's been a little dicey
- 47:22Speaker 2: back there at corner. Your boy Karen Prunty has his moments,
- 47:27Speaker 2: but it's a rookie thing, you know, up and down
- 47:30Speaker 2: rookie thing I did with him.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Yeah, another play today.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Are you are you worried about this at all? Or
- 47:35Speaker 2: am I just late to this party to be worried
- 47:37Speaker 2: about this? No, it's a fair concern.
- 47:41Speaker 1: Look like it'd be great if they get seventeen games
- 47:44Speaker 1: out of collectively. Gonzalez, Davis, Marcus Jones. It's usually not
- 47:49Speaker 1: how the NFL works. Yeah, and even still having somebody
- 47:52Speaker 1: who can rotate it and help keep those guys fresh.
- 47:54Speaker 1: So it's obviously going to be a drop off to
- 47:56Speaker 1: the next guy like Carlton Davis Christians. Also, we all
- 47:59Speaker 1: know what he is, Dave. It's like one of the
- 48:00Speaker 1: better corners in the NFL. I think he gets underrated.
- 48:04Speaker 1: You don't want it to be that much of a
- 48:05Speaker 1: draw off, and right now it's a little too extreme.
- 48:06Speaker 1: We we gush Evan, Yes, we gush over twenty eighteen.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Devin mccorty. We do.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Who was the third corner on that team?
- 48:13Speaker 2: We gush over twenty eighteen Jason mccorty. Jason, that's what
- 48:17Speaker 2: I met.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 48:18Speaker 2: It's okay. They're you know, they're twins.
- 48:21Speaker 1: You know, I I know that I apologize that we are.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Big proponents of the third corner Jason m with.
- 48:28Speaker 1: The twenty eighteen just like we gush over twenty eighteen
- 48:32Speaker 1: Latrey and Waddle. Twenty eighteen, Jason mccordy was an incredibly.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Valuable player to the Patriots.
- 48:38Speaker 1: It's that third corner behind Steph Gilmore and j C.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Jackson.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Now Jason McCarty's a starting caliber corner. Yeah, it's probably
- 48:45Speaker 1: like a number two. But like so, I don't know
- 48:47Speaker 1: if you're getting a starting caliber corner at this time
- 48:49Speaker 1: of year, but that role is important, and I don't
- 48:52Speaker 1: know is there a place Is there way they can
- 48:53Speaker 1: upgrade there? I haven't been wild. Kendall wildor started to
- 48:56Speaker 1: be a little bit better, and I think you kind
- 48:58Speaker 1: of looked for him to be that guy coming in
- 49:00Speaker 1: and the guy that has started.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Games in this league definitely has the experience.
- 49:03Speaker 1: So you know, if he closed out camp strong here,
- 49:05Speaker 1: has another good day tomorrow, maybe I'll feel a little
- 49:07Speaker 1: better about it. Make some plays in the preseason game,
- 49:10Speaker 1: but not quite not that anybody has twenty eighteen Jason mccordy,
- 49:14Speaker 1: but not quite twenty eighteen. No one could possibly be
- 49:18Speaker 1: who are some of the other random players that were
- 49:20Speaker 1: just like this guy in this year, I mean personally
- 49:24Speaker 1: twenty twenty de mere Bird.
- 49:25Speaker 2: I feel though that Landy Cooks Jason McCarty's past breakup
- 49:30Speaker 2: in Super Bowl fifty three is one of the best
- 49:32Speaker 2: plays I've ever seen. It's a great play. So everybody
- 49:35Speaker 2: makes that over hyping that, like he came out of
- 49:38Speaker 2: absolutely nowhere to basically save a Super Bowl right and win,
- 49:43Speaker 2: not win the Super Bowl, but he definitely had one
- 49:45Speaker 2: of the plays of that Super Bowl in a defensive
- 49:48Speaker 2: Super Bowl. So I know people say that we get
- 49:52Speaker 2: hot and bothered about twenty eighteen Jason McCarty, and rightfully so.
- 49:56Speaker 2: He made one of the plays of the season, right,
- 49:58Speaker 2: Like did they win the Super Bowl? If he doesn't
- 49:59Speaker 2: make that, probably not so.
- 50:01Speaker 1: So I'd like to again, I don't think you're going
- 50:04Speaker 1: to get somebody quite of that caliber at this time. No,
- 50:07Speaker 1: But if there's room up grad there n let somebody
- 50:09Speaker 1: steps up.
- 50:10Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. We just posted on Twitter the aj Brown
- 50:15Speaker 2: crossing route that Drake may hit him on early in
- 50:18Speaker 2: practice with the tight window throw over the media field
- 50:21Speaker 2: and you can see the angle of it, Like how
- 50:24Speaker 2: just pinpoint accurate that throw was right on a dime.

- 54:19Speaker 2: sure people want to weigh in and ask questions about
- 54:21Speaker 2: today's practice. We are going to start with Sean and Vancouver.
- 54:24Speaker 2: What's up Sean?
- 54:27Speaker 9: All right, let me just take off my headphones here
- 54:29Speaker 9: to say apologize for that. Yeah, so you guys were
- 54:33Speaker 9: talking about the Kwon Jones a little bit. But I've
- 54:36Speaker 9: been like really wondering about replaced in for Tonga. I
- 54:40Speaker 9: think they need a true no cycle, so I'm hoping
- 54:42Speaker 9: he could fill that role. I know it's maybe there's
- 54:45Speaker 9: more need in linebacker, but there's no reason why they
- 54:48Speaker 9: can't bring in check Thompson as well. So I'd like
- 54:51Speaker 9: to see what that happens to.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Alex.
- 54:52Speaker 9: I have a specific question for you, god a for
- 54:56Speaker 9: a Gallus look, because I have a feeling that maybe
- 54:59Speaker 9: I'm much more of a hope that the problem against
- 55:02Speaker 9: the cult was jun Ashby was missing, so all the
- 55:06Speaker 9: chance of that.
- 55:07Speaker 1: So that's kind of what Sean. That's kind of what
- 55:09Speaker 1: Mike Rabel said before practice today.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Although I'm surprised by that.
- 55:12Speaker 1: I also wonder he ripped into and I was a
- 55:17Speaker 1: little surprised. I was like, you know, he missed, but
- 55:20Speaker 1: you know, Boris has looked better. So what they've done
- 55:26Speaker 1: the last before this, the two practices they had before
- 55:29Speaker 1: this week full practice. If you've been out to training camp,
- 55:34Speaker 1: you know I do love it.
- 55:36Speaker 2: It's great.
- 55:37Speaker 1: One of there's four goal posts because they have too.
- 55:39Speaker 2: How much do you love that special team? Finish?
- 55:42Speaker 1: Just let me finish? Can you yeah, I don't love it.
- 55:45Speaker 1: I don't love it. I'd rather they have a kicker
- 55:47Speaker 1: they feel good about, or we feel good about.
- 55:48Speaker 2: But go ahead. Sorry, I apologize.
- 55:50Speaker 1: They have a goal post that is half as wide
- 55:54Speaker 1: as the regulation ones. It's narrow, and so they've had
- 55:57Speaker 1: Borgolis in team like eleven on eleven kicking and I
- 56:01Speaker 1: think the goal is to it ups the pressure a
- 56:03Speaker 1: little bit. You can't replicate a game. He's eight of
- 56:09Speaker 1: eleven on the narrow one before today, but two of
- 56:14Speaker 1: those misses would have been good on the wider one.
- 56:17Speaker 1: So Rabel said today before practice he liked how he'd
- 56:20Speaker 1: responded in practice. Today's first kick was like thirtyish yards,
- 56:24Speaker 1: doinks it off the left up right. I thought it
- 56:26Speaker 1: doinked in. The rest said it was no good. There's
- 56:28Speaker 1: also a flag and then a flight shaw.
- 56:30Speaker 2: I saw him donk one in later.
- 56:31Speaker 1: So okay, yeah, yeah, So the first one missed doink
- 56:34Speaker 1: left up right, and then there was a fight, so
- 56:37Speaker 1: I don't know what happened there. He then hit his
- 56:39Speaker 1: next four, maxing out at fifty two. Now he did
- 56:42Speaker 1: donk one in, so he had two doints today when
- 56:44Speaker 1: out went in, so he's four for five today. If
- 56:48Speaker 1: he didn't doink that one in and just hit all four,
- 56:50Speaker 1: I feel pretty good about it. The fact he had
- 56:52Speaker 1: two doints is like, eh, I still think he's okay.
- 56:56Speaker 1: Saturday will be big. Yeah, Honestly, I wonder if it's
- 56:59Speaker 1: the kind of thing they get into the game and
- 57:00Speaker 1: they're like, even if it's a fourth and one where
- 57:02Speaker 1: you might realistically go for it, they're like, we need
- 57:05Speaker 1: to get him out there and see what he does right, Right,
- 57:08Speaker 1: So the game's the game, it's just different for I
- 57:12Speaker 1: think kicker is probably one of the tougher positions to
- 57:14Speaker 1: replicate a game environment in these struggles they deal with
- 57:17Speaker 1: on a game day, whether that be weather, whether that
- 57:19Speaker 1: be pressure of the moment, would have you. So if
- 57:23Speaker 1: he has another bad game Saturday, you start bringing nye
- 57:25Speaker 1: it at least for workouts. But he's been better this
- 57:28Speaker 1: week because he had a rough week last week too.
- 57:29Speaker 1: He wasn't good in that joint practice. They had another
- 57:31Speaker 1: practice where he missed a couple of kicks. So if
- 57:33Speaker 1: he goes out in the game and he's fine, I
- 57:35Speaker 1: think it's mostly behind him. I would feel like he's
- 57:38Speaker 1: more or less settled in and yeah, maybe you chalk
- 57:40Speaker 1: some of it up to having to work with a
- 57:42Speaker 1: different long snapper. If he struggles again in the game,
- 57:45Speaker 1: well then those two doinks. Look, it's the step brothers. Well,
- 57:49Speaker 1: now the tuxedos seem kind of fed up, right, So
- 57:52Speaker 1: now the two doinks seem kind of whatever. So let's
- 57:55Speaker 1: see what he does in the game. I'm cautiously optimistic.
- 57:59Speaker 1: I don't think he's quite out of the woods yet,
- 58:01Speaker 1: but he's trending in the right direction.
- 58:02Speaker 2: So you don't love that your niche of covering this team,
- 58:07Speaker 2: which is the specialists and special teams in general, this
- 58:11Speaker 2: is a this is a above the fold story right now.
- 58:15Speaker 2: You should be happy about that. People. Look, I appreciate
- 58:18Speaker 2: falling in to ask you specifically.
- 58:20Speaker 1: I appreciate people caring about it. I appreciate me being
- 58:24Speaker 1: the person that they go to. I I mean, I
- 58:28Speaker 1: don't want the fans to be I like the fans.
- 58:29Speaker 1: I don't want the fans to be stressed. I don't
- 58:31Speaker 1: want them to stressed over the kicker. I'd rather them
- 58:33Speaker 1: not have to.
- 58:33Speaker 2: But there's nothing worse than stressing over the kick.
- 58:36Speaker 1: You're right, But if they're going to stress about the kicker,
- 58:38Speaker 1: I do appreciate being the one they come to to
- 58:40Speaker 1: ask the questions, So I'd rather I would rather Special
- 58:44Speaker 1: Teams be in the spotlight because Bryce Behinger continues to
- 58:47Speaker 1: be unbelievable.
- 58:50Speaker 6: At Bryce Bearinger, he's been empty more about unreal ever since.
- 58:56Speaker 6: Like he the first practice of two camp, he was like, okay.
- 58:59Speaker 6: Since it's like the second week of camp, he's been
- 59:01Speaker 6: on it. If Drake May was on this kind of meter,
- 59:04Speaker 6: I would be talking about him as the MVP favorite
- 59:06Speaker 6: right now. If Drake May was on this level of
- 59:08Speaker 6: heater like he's been now again.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Special Teams, We'll see what it looks like in the game.
- 59:14Speaker 1: He struggled down the stretch last year. He has to
- 59:15Speaker 1: be better in games. He's been awesome in this camp.
- 59:20Speaker 1: So credit will do it like we do on Patriots
- 59:22Speaker 1: being credit where credits due, credit work credits due.
- 59:24Speaker 2: Bryce Berger has been excellent and he was again today
- 59:29Speaker 2: really quickly on the kicker. Yeah, in my untrained opinion
- 59:33Speaker 2: on this topic, he still is yanking it from right
- 59:38Speaker 2: to left, and it's true, it's still go.
- 59:41Speaker 1: The twos were left, he's had missed there's he's which
- 59:44Speaker 1: tells me he's over kicking. Yeah, And I wonder if
- 59:47Speaker 1: it goes back to the first two he missed it,
- 59:50Speaker 1: because when he missed the first kick in that game,
- 59:51Speaker 1: it was like fifty five to fifty six yards. Yeah,
- 59:53Speaker 1: I'll be honest, I didn't think much of it because
- 59:55Speaker 1: it's like, all right, like a fifty five yard fieldal
- 59:58Speaker 1: is not a gimme, right, And and you know then
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: he was I think fifty two and he missed. It's
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: all right, well it's not a gimmey, but he's a
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: big leg each beating some of these. And I think
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: the first one he wasn't short because it was more
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: wide than short, and it had the distance. But I
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: don't think he got all of it. And I wonder
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: if just the distances are in his head, because.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: He made from like fifty six to fifty seven today
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: at the end.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, So we had the fifty seven yard at.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: The very end, which was encouraging because those those fifty
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: plus ones are the ones that you know, forty nine,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: fifty five, fifty six right where the three misses in
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: the game, I just have noticed that he's going he's
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: yanking it, you know, and maybe over kicking it is
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: the is the is the way that is why that
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: is happening. It couldn't be one of the reason. He's
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: really pulling through the ball right, but he seems to
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: be like the ball is drifting off to its left.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: The ones that he had today missed one left and
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: then he joinked one left. I just wonder if that's
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: a little bit of it. I was a little bit
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: surprised this morning, and I texted you about this this
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: morning after the game, and I get it he hasn't
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: watched the tape and talked to Jeremy Springer and Tom
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Quinn and they probably broke it all down and all
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: that kind of stuff, and they might have changed their
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: tune a little bit. After the game it was they're
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: banging through sixty yard field goals. We need to the
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: our kicker needs to do the same thing. Then this
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: morning it turned to well, he was working with a
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: new long snapper. And there's a lot that goes into it.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: And I'm not saying that Mike Rabel doesn't have the knowledge,
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: because he's very impressive how much knowledge of football he
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: has in every walk of football. But I do wonder
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: if maybe Springer and Tom Quinn and Vrabel had a
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: meeting of the minds and they kind of broke down
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: the tape and saw, you know, the ball wasn't getting
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: down on time, or the laces weren't perfect, so Baringer
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: had to like turn the ball at the last second
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: or like something like little detailed minutia like that.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I also wonder if there's an Elmanov again, it's so mental.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: And Vrabel kind of revisited the comments and yeah, you
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: know you don't want to cause it's in the Patriots'
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: best interests.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Well, they hyped him up all last year or even
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: when he struggled early.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: And Rabel at a history in Tennessee of having kind
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: of a quick hook with these guys, and he said
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: he learned that lesson. So it's in the Patriots' best
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: interest for borgallis to get it right and be their kicker.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: I think some people think it's in their best interest
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: for him to like suck and force them into getting
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: a new kicker. No, you'd rather he mystery Box or
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: the boat, right. You'd rather guy you already have on
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: the team be good. So I wonder if Rabel just
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: looked at the men. And this is where Rabel's very
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: good at kind of relating from player to player. I
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: wonder if he looked at the mental side of it
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: and maybe just thought, you know, it'll help him be
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: better if I give him an ad of boy today.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: You know, whether he meant what he said after the
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: game and today was a little you know, playing with it,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: or maybe he was trying to send a message after
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: the game and it was harsher than he really felt
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: and today was kind of just making good on it.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: Maybe he just felt like, this is the messaging this
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: kid needs to get back on track.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Just to let you know, Paul is competing with us
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: right now on your station. Oh that Paul, It's Unshine
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: Day is going on right now on the Sports Up
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: during Catch twenty two, just right up competitive with his own,
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: his own.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: I'll tweet out to my podcast was, oh right now, No,
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: don't do that yet. I am going to chee out
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: my notebook though you can read that and watch the show.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: So you had him four for five today to wrap
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: up the Bordalas thing, right.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Well, six of seven if you include the two in
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: the minutes, okay, four or five in the team period,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: and then he hit the two fifty yards at the end.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: There Okay, so six to seven.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: So again just to put the call on it trending
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: in the right direction but not out of the woods yet.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: Yeah. And then on the run defense point, yeah, it's
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: it's on my small sea concern list. My small sea
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: concern list has really changed over the last ten. Kicker,
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: third corner, I'd say, kicker, de corner, interior run defense
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: are probably the top three right now.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: I don't even thin I don't think interior run defense
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: is low C. I think that's at least a middle SE.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: You think it's you think it's a capital C. It's
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: a medium C. Medium C. The reason why I have offense,
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: I think Van Roten will be okay, yeah, I'm kind
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: of I think they kind.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Of Van Roten that that was drifting towards capital C.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Now with Van Roten, it's like a low still on my.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: List because he hasn't practiced in full.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Yet, right, Yeah, we didn't see me.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's not you know, it's not as as
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: big of a concern now that they made that that signing.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: But interior run defense and they work out a nose
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: tackle and a line an off ball linebacker. After seeing
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: the joy practices against the Colts and then obviously this
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: was before today, but now seeing today with Barkley, you
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: know they might have been on this already. And that's
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: one of those things with practice that's hard to watch,
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: like you don't really. Like I said earlier, there's so
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: many bodies and colors flying all over the place in
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: the trenches that sometimes you can't see exactly who's at
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: fault for every run that gets creased. So when they're
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: watching the tape back, it seems like they're at least
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: a little bit small see concerned about those spots too.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: Patty is an aguan. What's up, Patty?
- 1:04:52Speaker 11: What's up? Guys?
- 1:04:53Speaker 12: Just a couple of things before I get to my
- 1:04:55Speaker 12: football point. Evan, that was me? That that was you.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Patty. I apologie. It's not used to getting
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: yelled that post. You know, I just gave a way.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: I didn't know it was you. I would have I
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: would have I would have stopped. My bad.
- 1:05:11Speaker 6: That's sorry.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: I'm a what can I say?
- 1:05:15Speaker 12: And Alex, I can't remember if it was pe Or
- 1:05:18Speaker 12: on the Sunday morning show that you do on on
- 1:05:20Speaker 12: the Sports Hub that I told you that I had
- 1:05:23Speaker 12: or Binard on a few of my mock drafts, and
- 1:05:25Speaker 12: of course Tawie Roseman had to grab him up, because
- 1:05:28Speaker 12: that's what Hawler Rosemand does, you know. But just regarding
- 1:05:32Speaker 12: the offense, I was sitting in the bleachers, so I
- 1:05:34Speaker 12: just got mostly the offensive perspective. It seems like from
- 1:05:38Speaker 12: what they did Monday, which was closed to the public,
- 1:05:41Speaker 12: into today, they kind of carried the momentum that they
- 1:05:44Speaker 12: had offensively Monday into today. And I think that's great,
- 1:05:49Speaker 12: Like you do you guys think that like these guys
- 1:05:52Speaker 12: are starting to figure it out. And if we see
- 1:05:54Speaker 12: this again tomorrow and possibly I don't know who's gonna
- 1:05:59Speaker 12: play in the Cleveland game, but do you think this
- 1:06:01Speaker 12: is a really good sign considering like there were a
- 1:06:04Speaker 12: lot of questions. You know, there were questions before the
- 1:06:06Speaker 12: pads came on with aj Brown, you know, there was
- 1:06:09Speaker 12: questions with with the Dobbs, you know, catching on and
- 1:06:13Speaker 12: having things click. And of course, like every year in
- 1:06:16Speaker 12: the past couple of years, the pop just pop had
- 1:06:19Speaker 12: degene and a blender today and it was it was
- 1:06:22Speaker 12: amazing to see. And that's the question, do do you
- 1:06:26Speaker 12: think these these guys are starting to click? Do they
- 1:06:28Speaker 12: get it? This? Does this momentum carry into the season,
- 1:06:32Speaker 12: and is this offense is going to be possibly even
- 1:06:35Speaker 12: better than what they were last year.
- 1:06:37Speaker 11: I get off there.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: I guess, Thanks Patty, thanks for the call. I don't
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: know if they're going to be statistically better, And I
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: know this is kind of a popular take, but I
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: don't know if they're gonna be. But I think that
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: they're gonna be what's the word. I think that they're
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: gonna be. Uh, They're gonna be better from the eye
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: test standpoint and just from like if you were devising
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: a game plan against them, I think they're gonna be
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: to use a fretism, I think they're going to be
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: harder to defend. Do I know if Drake May is
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: going to complete seventy percent of his passes? Again? No,
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: I don't think that that will happen. I don't think
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: they'll be able to replicate that kind of efficiency because
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: they're gonna play better teams, and they're gonna play better defenses,
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: and they have a harder schedule. But I think that
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: they're going to be a more multiple team. I think
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: they're going to be more dangerous offense in a lot
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: of ways. I think that what's happening is a combination
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: of Drake May getting on the same page as AJ
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: Brown and Romeo Dobbs. I also think that Josh McDaniels
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: is kind of figuring out AJ Brown and Romeo Dobbs.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: More specifically, I would say Dobbs. I haven't seen Dobbs
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: in the slot nearly as much as we did early
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: on in practice.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: No, they're using them outside of the numbers. They using
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: him down the field. I guess my only question on that.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: A lot more like he was used in Green Bay, right.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: I guess my only question on that is like, Okay,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: so they clearly had this role in mind for somebody
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: to play on the inside.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: Yeah, who is like your boy pop Pop?
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: I mean he was good again today.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: So I think that they are. You know, it's clear
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: that Dobbs, I think, is more suited to sort of
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: like a conventional route tree than something like the inside
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: receiver rout tree in this offense, which is so option
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: heavy in decision making and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: Quickness at the top of the route that's probably not
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: his strength as much as some of the downfield plays
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: that we've seen him make. The strong catches along the sidelines,
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: the outs, the comebacks that in cuts, deep balls like
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: that's kind of where he started to flourish, and a
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: lot of these practices. To me, that's like maybe a
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: slight pivot in usage than it is like that Romeo
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: Dobbs stunk to begin camp and now all of a
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: sudden is a great player, right Like, I think that
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: he's probably been the same guy all along, but they
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: were using him in ways that maybe he wasn't super
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: comfortable with. Now that they've had some couple of weeks,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: some conversations I'm sure in rooms that were not allowed
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: to be in, they've sort of figured this thing out
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: with Romeo Dobs. It's a good point though, if that
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: digs chain moving slot role that we have grown accustomed
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: to seeing in this Josh McDaniel's offense, If that's not
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: Dobbs's role, and it really AJ Brown's playing X like
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: he's he's playing X on the outside. If that's not
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: Dobbs's role and that's not a J Brown's role, then
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: it is relying a lot on Pop Douglas being like
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: a consistent you're talking about and being maybe one hundred
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: catch guy something like that, or at least a higher
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: volume that, and he's got to be consistent. I think
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: that's the one thing with Pop that we've seen that
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: he's had some troubles with is not He's made plays,
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: and he's made big plays and big moments, but he's
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: got to be consistently good and consistently in the right spots.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: So we'll see. We'll see if he's able to do that.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: If not, they don't really have another player with the
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: body type or the skill set besides maybe Chisholm. And
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: I don't know if Chisholm is is it, you know,
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: so what we'll see. Uh, Brian is in Atlanta. What's up, Brian?
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: What's up?
- 1:09:57Speaker 11: Guys? First and foremost, And I'm a big fan and
- 1:09:59Speaker 11: you us been making instance about twenty twenty. We was
- 1:10:03Speaker 11: all watching Kim Newton throw the ball in the dirt
- 1:10:06Speaker 11: on flat routes. So we came a long way man,
- 1:10:08Speaker 11: So shout out to you guys. So I got it.
- 1:10:10Speaker 11: Just a quick question if you could right now, Patriots
- 1:10:13Speaker 11: Twitter is on fire, like all right, we had a
- 1:10:15Speaker 11: good practice because they equals we look good. Not the
- 1:10:17Speaker 11: everybody's super excited, but if you can see one thing
- 1:10:21Speaker 11: kind of derailing our season, that we can't kind of
- 1:10:25Speaker 11: maneuver around. What would you think that would be, man,
- 1:10:27Speaker 11: I'll take it.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: Off there, thanks, Brian. Well. I think it's a little
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: bit of both. They're related in a little bit of ball.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: I wanted to segue in at some point into our
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: Christian Gonzales temperature check right now, pass rush, pass rush
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: off the edge more specifically, and are they going to
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: have to be kind of a paint by numbers scheme
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: pass rush type of team and if they are going
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: to have to be that, which I think we both
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: kind of feel like it's trending towards that they needed
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: just Gonzales not only to be healthy, but he also
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: needs to be locked in like they need all pro
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: Christian Gonzales, you know. And right now he's maybe, in
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: my mind, a little bit of Calum May, a little
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: bit of col Um B. I think he has a
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: practice injury that he's banged up with that he's trying
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: to get back from. I don't think that he's going
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: to practice at less than one hundred percent because of
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: the contract. So when he was one hundred percent and
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: he was feeling fine, he was out of practice. The
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: second that he wasn't he hasn't been practicing, right, and
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: I think that's there has to be a little bit
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: into his defense. You fully understand that, right, Like, I mean,
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: you're not going to practice at less than one hundred
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: percent and risk further or more severe injury when you're
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: in a contract negotiation on a mega deal, on a
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: long term.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: Extension generational money, not just like changing money for your life,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: but generations.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: Yeah, So what's your temperature right now with Gonzales? We've seen,
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: you know, Rabel has said he's done some return to
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: play stuff and he's working out and all that kind
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: of stuff. But it's been what week plus now five six?
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: This is so he got hurt on that Monday, miss Tuesday.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: So yeah, over a week however you want to slice it.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to say this is the fifth or
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: sixth practice that he's missed, and he's missed both joint practices.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: Yeah, so I would assume he's not going to practice tomorrow.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: And I don't think we've been on the air since
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: Devin Witherspoon signed his contract.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: That was on Saturday.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: So where are we at?
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: Well?
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: Clock started, Yeah, the clock has started. I really like
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: see him get it wrapped up.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: This week.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: I think Monday is a huge day because you mentioned,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: you know the risk with the joint practices. Well, they're
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: done with those after tomorrow. They will practice again until Monday,
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: but they're done with those after tomorrow. It's when the
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: real prep for the season starts to ramp up.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: You know, if he was.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: Worried about the joint practices, which I kind of get,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: You're not gonna miss the Colts one, come back for
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: four days and then miss the Eagles ones again. It's
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: just the bad looks. You're just gonna miss that week, right,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: So I would think they gotta get it done that
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: the you know, when do you start to really worry
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: about it. I went back and looked Kyle Hamilton, who
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: now safeties don't make as much as corners, but sort
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: of comparable situation, right, ye, a guy that reset the
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: market is at his position, elead player at his position
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: on a very good team. Kyle Hamilton got his contract
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: the day after roster cuts last year.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: There's a lot of that does happen from time to
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: time that a guy signs like right before the regular
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: the only.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Two guys that signed after him before. You know, then
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: it laps around to March and you do a whole
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: other offseason. But I don't think you want to screw
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: with that if you're the Patriots. Jamison Williams signed the
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: day before the Lion's opener. That wasn't a record setting contract,
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: and then Aiden Hutchinson signed in October. You throw Aiden
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Hutchinson out because he was hurt and that's a separate right. So,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: and they don't have a lot of time between roster
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: cuts in the first game, not this year, at least
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: less than everybody else right beside.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: Seattle Son or nine days.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I think if we get through roster cuts,
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: like twenty four hours after roster cuts and the practice
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: squad set and you know, you're kind of done for
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: the front office, that that they're never done. But you
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: know what I mean, like it wraps up busy period.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: So that's the back end of it. I really think
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: you'd like to see it get done this week so
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: you can just start Seattle prep and not have to
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: be worried about that. But they not have him worried
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: about it, I should say, But you know, the back
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: end of that window before you start to really get
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: worried about it is like once roster cuts wrap up,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: and the practice squad is set, Like, all right, what
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: are what's the plan here?
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: So just reading Tea leaves and I have no inside information,
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: but just reading Tea Leaves on this situation, I don't
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: want to give people too much of a popsicle headache,
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: but I do want to talk through the contract negotiation
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Well, I was on Felgermas the other day, so I
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: heard all the numbers.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: Right, So Devin Witherspoon the big number, and I know
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: your shows are hammering this plenty. Yeah, the big number
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: is the two for fifty.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Nine guaranteed at signing right out of this guaranteed in
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: the NFL does not mean guaranteed.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: So in his fourth and fifth season, So this year
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: and next year, Devin Witherspoon is now going to make
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: two years fifty nine million total. So fifty nine million
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: divided by two, right, whatever that math is. So the
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: difference is between that and some of the other contracts
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: that we've seen, for example sauce Gardner, is that it's
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: more of an escalator contract where sauce Gardner got a
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: little bit more in year four than he would normally
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: get a little bit more in year five than he
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: would normally get and then the year six was the back. Yeah,
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: so stingly, Derek Stinglely and uh, Devin Witherspoon have gotten
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: the bag immediately. They've gotten it now, right, So that
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: and I think that that's what Gonzales wants.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: Now we were talking just real quick.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: We're talking about just day with Greg.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's not even like right away on the extension.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: The rays on what would be the rookie contract is huge.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: Was like forty million for Whispoon and not everybody gets that.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: Sir Tan, I think got very little new money.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Yeah he got he got.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: A big contract, but it didn't kick it until the
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: contract really kicking, right, So that's going to be a
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: variable here.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: So the team perspective is that you have the fourth
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: year of the rookie contract, you have the team option
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: for the fifth year, which the Patriots have already picked up,
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: and technically, even though I hope it doesn't get to
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: this point, you have a franchise tag year two.
- 1:16:24Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: So from a team perspective, it's like, well, we don't
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: really need to pay that kind of money to him
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: immediately upfront because he's under contract and we have team control.
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: From a player perspective, he wants the bag, which is
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: totally reasonable. Right now, the only thing that I would
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: say is that if Christian Zales wants the bag, that's fine.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: I would pay him everything that he wants. But usually
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: on the back end of the contract that it has
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: to be team friendly because if you got the money
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: up front, then you got to negotiate, like you got
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: to give something here, So on the back end of
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: the contract you want it to be a little bit
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: more team friend where maybe those you know, last couple
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: of years of the deal aren't fully guaranteed, or there's
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: options or out in the contract or whatever the case
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: may be. Even though these numbers get reported and Witherspoon
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: was what four for one, thirty two and one on
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: one guaranteed, it's actually an extension, so it's a six
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: year contract for that kind of money. Usually they're really
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: like three year contracts. Some players that are really star
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: stud players will get like three and a half years guarantee.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: But there's a lot of times that those things. There's
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: outs in a lot of these contracts. So if I
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: had to guess, and again this is just a guess,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: if I had to guess that's what they're haggling over.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Gonzales wants to get the money that Witherspoon got up front.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: The Patriots probably want to pay him more of the
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: escalator route, or they're saying, if we give you the
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: back now, then it's really only going to be like
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: a three year contract and we're going to give ourselves
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: flexibility on the back end. I don't know where this
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: ends up. They have the framework from Seattle, and I
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: think Witherspoon did give the concession of it being a
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: little bit more team friendly on the back end to
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: get the money immediately. So if I'm the Patriots, like you,
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: don't you just put the Witherspoon contract on the table
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: and say, your buddy just signed this contract in Seattle
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: like last week, and this is you know, you guys
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: are kind of comparable players, and we both we think
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: both of you guys are studs, and this is the money,
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: right like, this is the market. I don't know who's
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: signing or what or what negotiation or who's being the
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: difficult one here, but that's usually what these types of
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: things come down to. I would like to think that
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: they could get this done before the start of the
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: regular season. I don't love the idea of playing him
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: on the fourth year of his rookie contract without a
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: new deal. I don't think that's in anybody's best interest,
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: team or Gonzo No. So, I think that would be problematic.
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Last point on this, I understand that there that he's
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: had some injuries in this in this camp injury and
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: last year he missed three games to start the season.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: I would just push back slightly, and maybe I jump
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: down Paul's throat a little bit too much the other
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: day about this, but I would just push back slightly
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: on the injury prone thing. So if you look at
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: the last two seasons, the Patriots have played thirty eight games,
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: He's played thirty four of.
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: Them, right had he broke his collar bone.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: So his rookie season he broke his collar bone, he
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: got hurt. His rookie season, his second season in the league,
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: he played sixteen out of seventeen games. The last game
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: that he missed was the Joe Milton game. Was it
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: was the Week eighteen against Buffalo. Technically he was in
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: concussion protocol, but who knows if he would have cleared
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: perfect put him in r if it's like a meaningful game.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: Who knows, right, you never know what could happen if
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: that was like a playoff type of game. So he
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: played sixteen out of seventeen that year. Then he played
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: eighteen out of twenty one last year, and he played
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: all the meaningful games like he played down the stretch,
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: he played the playoffs, he played the Super Bowl. So
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: he got hurt his rookie year. I'm not really gonna
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: haggle with him over the fact that he missed four
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: games in two seasons. Like, it's a contact sport. Guys
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: get banged up, Guys get hurt. He also didn't practice
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: all last summer, and he was one of the best
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: corners in football, right, So I'm not really worried about
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: any of that. Hopefully this gets resolved though, and my
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: guess is that it's over the guarantees and when really
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: over the payment schedule, like when does the guarantee and
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: where's the money actually kick in on the contract. But
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: hopefully they can get this resolved. I don't think though,
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: you know, just like I was just saying to wrap
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: it up, I don't think that it's a good idea
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: for either side for him to play his fourth season
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: on his rookie contract. The Patriots are not going to
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: get the complete Christian Gonzales. Christian Zalez obviously there's tons
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: of risk for him, that's self explanatory. But I also
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: just think from a Patriots standpoint, like, don't you want
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: you need peae Christian Gonzalez, You don't need business decision
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: Christian Gonzalez. Yeah, And I think the Jets saw that
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: a little bit with sauce Gardner, and frankly, I think
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: that that's why sauce Gardner didn't make it as Jet
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: was because of some of that kind of stuff. So
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: that that's the Gonzales thing. Hopefully the next time we're
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: on this show a week from today, we're talking about
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: that he signed a contract, So hopefully that gets done
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: at some point. Do you want to do three up,
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: three down? Let's uh yeah, let's do it. Okay, So
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: we decided that we're going to do three up, three
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: down for the last week of Patriots training camp, So
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: the joint practice against the Colts, the preseason game, and
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: then today's joint practice with the Eagles.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: And are we doing this like verse expectations like Drake
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: may is good.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: Right, I don't need is good?
- 1:21:37Speaker 11: A j.
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: Brown is good, Milton Williams is good. I don't need
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: those types of stuff.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: It's verse expectations. So I will start with the player
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: who you know, is maybe in the same tax bracket
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: as those guys and is maybe you know, similar name value,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: but I think deserves to be on here, and that
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: is Romeo.
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: I was getting worried. I was getting I was small
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: sea concerned.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you're a little more and small concerned.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: Some comps around that were.
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: I didn't worry. I didn't want to lead it on.
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: I didn't want to be too text group. You were
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: throwing some Yeah, you don't want to be too strong
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: about No, you.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Don't want to be too large like there was still
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: time for him to turn around, but you were kind
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: of looking at what does the path look like.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: I've learned my lesson about being alarmist on this show.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: I'm not gonna do it again.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: But he started turned the corner and he had another
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: good day to day and it's still not perfect, and
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: the usage changed, and I wonder the overall impact of
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: the offense with him being less of an inside guy,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: or maybe the thought was, all right, let's get you
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: going where you're kind of comfortable and then we'll work
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: back towards some of that other stuff. So not fully
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: where I think they want him to be yet, but
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: he's made tremendous strides in the last week.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: So Romeo dobs up. Yeah, I even though you know
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: he had to maybe a drop maybe miscommunication a little
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: bit today on the in the two minute drill. The
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: thing that stands out the most of me is the
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: hands and the strength at the catch point just really
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: like plucks the ball out of the sky, like away
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: from his body, really strong hands. He has the ability
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: to go up and get the ball and climb the
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: ladder two and win above the rim. They're gonna be
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: a lot of jump balls in this offense. That's gonna
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: be a big part of this offense. I didn't think
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: that Romeo Dobbs quite had that kind of like above
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: the rim elevation, high point the ball type of game,
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: but that's exactly what he has shown. I'm with you, though,
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: I think this is mostly a adjustment of usage as
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: it is a Romeo Dobbs figuring things out. I think
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: it's a little bit of both, but I think it's
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: a I believe it's probably more about McDaniels and the
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: coaching staff figuring him out than him figuring the offense out.
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: I think his route tree has changed, not significantly, but
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: I think it's changed enough to make him more comfortable
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: within the offense. It's gonna be interesting to see, though,
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: you know, if he does eventually have to kick inside
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: more and start to figure that out a little bit more.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: But as of right now, he's been really, really good.
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: He's had a smallcy concern. You're you're accusing me of
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: saying some not nice things about him in a texture
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: not not nice, that's what you're accusing me of, And
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: I am wiping.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: You were starting to go down. You were exploring what
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: would the worst case scenario look like. You didn't say
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: that's where we were, but you were starting to think
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: about what it.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: Was wiping the slate clean. I think that he's been
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: really good for like a week plus now, and I
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: am now excited about Romeo.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: How about that he was also your number one?
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: Yes, one second, Matt, I've logged out of the tablet
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: again for the emails. If we can, Yeah, go ahead.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: Well we're talking back there, and he has another water.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: Another water for bar long day because.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: I'm a baby. Excuse me, because I'm like, I'm going
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: to break out coffin if I a lot of talking
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: the check out my videos.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: What else do you need anything else?
- 1:24:50Speaker 13: Sir?
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: Are you good? Over there? My next? My number two up?
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Thank you God? Where were we? My number two up?
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: It's been it's been a day. Ye look at you guys,
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: you guys waiting on. Thank you.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: This is These guys are gonna make the show work.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: These guys are white because back here too, these guys
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: would make the show go.
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: Number two up.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: kJ Britt kind of disappeared over the first few weeks.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: He came to a similar list, got buried, and came back.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: Had a really good game in that preseason game, saw
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: him taking some reps with the ones out there today,
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: seeing that athleticism that I think we were excited about
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: in the spring before he got a little banged up
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: in miss Mini camp. So kJ Britt up.
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I had him on my list too. Back to
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: back plays in the preseason game or run stuff, run
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: tackle for loss really and then forrest fumble or he
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: did the peanut punch and punched the ball out on
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: a scrambled nice play, And then I thought today. He
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: settled down in the run defense a little bit when
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: they were struggling early on against the Eagles. In the practice,
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: I thought Chad Mumma had really emerged as the third
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: linebacker and really had buried kJ Britt and with you know,
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: Khalil Jacobs making a little bit of a push. It's
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: a rookie versus a veteran and a guy maybe he
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: invested in long term and Khalil Jacobs and I think
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: we were all getting a little bit small sea concerned
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: that he wasn't even gonna make the team. kJ Britt.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: He needed a week like this, He needed a couple
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: of big days of practice, a preseason game, that type
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: of thing. He definitely brings a downhill thumping element to
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: that group. Yeah that, you know, Spoling does a little
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: bit too, but I think he does it a little
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: bit more. We know we can play on special teams
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: and make the roster that way. I think he's he's
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: carving out a role for himself right now. I think
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: he's he's on the on the inside tractor, earning a spot.
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: It looks like he's gonna team right now. Yeah, number three,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: here's where our list will change. Yeah, Bryce Berringer. He's
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: been so good. He's been so good and nobody will.
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: Talk about it. Oh you're talking about.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: It because somebody should. He's been at excellent. Bryce Bearinger
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: third up.
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: Okay, So I had a couple that just a couple
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: of honorable mentions. We talked a lot about John Saunders already.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: He was actually had John Saunders here, but I wanted to.
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: He was on my list and we talked a lot
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: about him already earlier in the show. So I'll skip
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: that one. I do want to give a little bit
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: of love to Kyle Williams. I know he didn't have
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: a great practice today, wasn't very noticeable out there today,
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: but he was really noticeable and I thought in the
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: joint practice with the Colts he hit the big post
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: down the middle of the field from Tommy DeVito in
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: that practice, and then he had a really good tape
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: against the preseason in the preseason game against the Colts.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: So I think we saw a flash. We saw a
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: skill set, we saw the speed, we saw the release package.
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: It's to me on a team that maybe might be
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: if there's one sort of deficiency of this offense is
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: that they don't have enough pure speed on the outside.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: I think that there's too much of a skill set
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: there with Kyle Williams to give up. I think you
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: have to keep pushing with him. Wish he did a
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: little bit more today for this take, but I think
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: if we're doing the whole week, I think he deserves
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: to be on the list or it deserves to be mentioned.
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: They don't have a ton of explosiveness in this offense.
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: If he's not one of the guys that's.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: It's him, it's Pop, it's Travon Henderson. Yeah, those are
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: kind of the guys you're looking at to and A J.
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: Brown. The explosive is the wrong word because A J.
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: Brown is an explosive supposed to just speed, spatical speed
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: down the field, but real speed.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: Kyle Williams is my guy.
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: But it wasn't great fast and it's a good point.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: Fast and but that was a pretty sweet touchdown he
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: had in the preseason game last week. That was Dallas.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: That was a great you know, fast and fast and release, Yeah,
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: filthy fast and which is if there's things to come
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: after fast and release is probably one of the best
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: ones that can come after that.
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: He probably has and then we'll move on. I think
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: he has the best released package on the team, like
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: outside numbers.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: Like outside of a J B.
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: I think he's got a better pure release package than
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: AJ Brown.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: It is a different kind of A J.
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: Brown's feet are unbelievable. Yeah, but AJ Brown's like he's
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: bullying that okayage like I'm talking about like we're gonna
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: put this on the mixtape.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: Speaking of bowling people, one more up from me.
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: Hassan Haskins is going to make this team love.
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: He is going to be the third running back.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: Am I wrong? I know it looks like third running
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: back right now? Six five?
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: This is my kind of running back. Oh, you don't
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: really have any wiggle. He just runs through people. It's
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: awesome fun. He had a run today where I was
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: doing the like Chris Berman. Yeah, yeah, because he was
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: just popping off of guys like he was just bouncing
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: off of dude's like running through the middle of the field.
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: Hassan lower the Shoulder Haskins as they call him. He's
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: He's so much fun to watch and as a guy
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: that what's that role? Like he won he's played special
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: teams in his curse. You can do that. Yeah, but
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: really offensively, what's the role for the third running back?
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: Just get the yards that are Just get the yards
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: that are there.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: Don't turn the ball over and make the defense pay
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: for tackling you. That's Hassan haskins entire game, for better
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: or worse, that's his entire game. I'm kind of surprised
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: he was still unsigned. I don't know if he was
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: dealing with an injury or whatever. I really liked him
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: coming out of Michigan. I remember getting all hot and
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: bothered about the idea of him and Derek Henry in
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: a backfield fourth round PA didn't fully pan out, but.
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: Really good week for him. So sometimes it's I would
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: say it's a majority of the time of blessing. Sometimes
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: it's a slight curse.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: With Mike Rabel, Yeah, he has his guys, he loves
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: his guys.
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: And Hassan Askins was a fourth round pick by the
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: Titans under Mike Rabel and stretching Ryan Cowden I believe
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: was still there at that time. I think it was
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: twenty twenty two, so Rabel's second to last two Yeah
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: season with the Titans.
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: That might have been Cowden's last year.
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: Twenty three was Rabel's last year as a Titans coach.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: Cowden was in Tennessee. That was Cowden was the VP
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: of player Personnel.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: I think he might have been running that draft.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: He was the it says, interim general manager. When did
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: he become that?
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: I want to say then, because they traded AJ.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: Brown in December twenty twenty two.
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: So right around then, so he would have been the
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: interim gentleman. Wasn't it the twenty two draft? Yeah?
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, no, so he was the number two Yeah.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: So, uh, it's one of their guys, one of their guys.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: Yeah, either way, one of their guys.
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: It's one of their guys. And sometimes you just have
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: your your we all have it, we all you have
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: your type, you know.
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: So also a Michigan man.
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: All right to the downs.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: Number one down, number one down for me, we already
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: talked a lot about. It's all kind of just uh
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: quickly here. But those those depth corners, man, yeah, me too.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: They're just look, I get it's not gonna be as
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: good as Gonzalez and Davis depth boundary corners specifically all
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: I don't even know who their backup slock corner is.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Marcus Jones has.
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: Been out there work probably Charles Woods probably but Channing
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: Canada Tribe.
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: But yeah, and he got banged up today.
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just you'd like to see a little more
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: and and look sometimes it's getting burned by AJ Brown.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: I get it. I've seen that third corner roll be
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: more competitive. I think you know last year with with
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: Alex Austin, it was more competitive.
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: Yeah. So I thought Charles Woods had an okay, like
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: good enough start, he got whatever he dealt with, he
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: got injured, and then since he got back from that
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: injury and back into practice, I don't think he's been
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: nearly as good as he was to start the summer.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: The oldor has been getting a little bit better. He's
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: got some ball skills. He's like he's got a bill
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: plays on the ball.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: Not totally like closing the book on this yet not
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: full blown. You know, there's nothing they can do, but
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: right I don't.
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: I don't feel great about it with two guys, you know,
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: Gonzales and Davis and even Marcus Jones that have had
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: some injuries and get a little bit banged up. It's
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: it's a it's both number one on both of our lists. Yeah,
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: number two, number two.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: I know this is a little bit of a controversial take.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: I cast some heat for this, yes on the Sports.
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: Up, but it's yeah, and I'd almost put him on here,
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: but I kind of knew you would, so I'm not
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: calling him a bust.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: And you know, this isn't saying he's never gonna work out,
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: but I think they expect him to be further along
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: at this point. And Mike Rabel gave an answer the
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: other day, and I'm curious your interpretation of it. He
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: so earlier in camp he was asked about Lomu playing
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: guard and said like, yeah, we're probably gonna do that
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: at some point. This is like three weeks ago now,
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: and then they have the injuries at guard, they bring
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: in these guys and he gets asked again, like are
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: you still gonna do that? And I'm paraphrasing, but Rabel's
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: answer was along the lines of, well, you know, he's
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: making progress a tackle.
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: We don't want to screw with that. It's unfair to
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: the kid. You know.
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: It's some people think it's easier. I think he even
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: said he was somebody thought it's easier maybe to go
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: between guard and tackle than everybody expects. I kind of
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: interpreted that as well. No, he's still not developed as
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: a tackle yet, and that's where we really need him
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: to develop, so we can't move to guard. But it
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: does sound like, and they said a draft night like
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: part of their plan might have been to have him
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: be in the mix at guard, at least in an
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: emergency basis.
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: So it's a three positions super sub right.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: So I don't know he's a little but we said
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: it earlier. You still i'll see the flashes of him
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: being a first round pick, but you also see the
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: moments where he's clearly still learning a new position and
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: catching up to the NFL. He's a guy that needs
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: a red shirt. He's probably gonna get it. I just
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: I think they thought he might be a little further
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: along and might be able to help some of these
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: depth that ues they're having, And clearly he's not there
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: because we're not seeing him REPI.
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: Guard, So I agree. I thought his tape against the
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: Colts was rough for the most part. It wasn't terrible,
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: it wasn't a disaster, but I didn't think it was great.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: And I thought today I read off some of the
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: plays that he was involved in today, it was streaky. Again.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: I when they drafted him. Just going back to our
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: priors about when they drafted him, there is two reasons
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: why I didn't love the pick, and this is in
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: real time, it's not revision his history. The first one
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: was that he was a left tackle in college that
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: was going to have to play right in the league. Yeah,
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: and I'm one of those people that don't think that
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: it's super easy to just flip side. Some guys do it,
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: no problem, but some guys don't. And I that was
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: one of my concerns. The other concern that I kept
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: hearing throughout the entire predraft process from people that vet
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: these things even better than we do, is that he
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: just doesn't have a real mean streak. And I thought
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: what I saw on the tape against the Colts is
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: that he's on the block, and he's in position to
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: make the block. But there's just a little bit of
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: something that you leave that leaves you to wanting more.
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: You know, like, you want him to you want him
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: to like assert his dominance. You want him to take
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: a guy and put him into the h you want
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: to see a little bit of an edge. Yeah, And
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: I just that's the one thing that I don't necessarily
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: see yet with him, maybe that will come in time
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: with more comfortability and like once he really starts to
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: get his feet wet and settled in the NFL level.
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: But it's something that his college coaches admitted was something
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: that they tried to get out of him for three
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: years at you time. So I thought he was going
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: to be a little bit of a project because his
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: guy some physical development to do in terms of hitting
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: the weight room and adding mass to his frame. He
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: is most likely going to be flipping sides and the
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: way that Campbell's played all summer long, I think we
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: feel pretty good about him having to flip sides because
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: I think Campbell's going to be at left tackle. And
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: then the last thing is is that some guys, you know,
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: if they don't bite when their puppies, and they won't
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: bite when they're dogs. That's what Bill Parcells used to say,
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: And I think that you need to have a little
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: bit of that bite to be great at that position.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: I think you can be really good on the offensive
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: line without it, but to be like a great player,
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: I think you need to be a little bit of
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: an a hole on the offensive line. It just comes
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: with it. So I think that can develop. I think
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: that Will Campbell is a nice guy to kind of
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: develop that audahm, because Will Campbell definitely has that.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: And I think on the other side too, Gay Akish
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: is the guy that will help him get there.
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: Last thing I would say on Lomu, I feel as though,
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: you know, he's not necessarily behind where I thought he
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: was going to be because we do have to adjust.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: And I know we've talked about this. He was the
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: twenty eighth pick, not the fourth pick.
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: Right. Those guys don't always play your one.
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: So it's we are so used to Drake may as
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: the third overall pick. Will Campbell as the fourth of the.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: Rock was such an he he was a top ten talent, yeah.
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: Right, and he fell in the draft for ridiculous reasons.
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: So it was three years in a row of the
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: Patriots first round pick being like a blue chip, premium
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: talent at that position that was immediately a starter. And
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: we have to realize that they picked at the end
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: of the first round. They picked the last tackle that
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: went in the first round. It wasn't going to be
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: this guy's a plug and play player most likely, and
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: here we are. So that was number two for you.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Was Caleb Blomeo. I'll stick on the offensive line. We
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: already talked about it a little bit. But the interior
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: backups on the offensive line, they needed Greg Van Roe
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: and wrot In. They did. They rot In, they got him.
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: That's so I'm less concerned about it now. But James Hudson,
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: Makai Butler, whoever you want to throw in that category.
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: I no disrespect intended whatsoever. But those guys are I
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: don't know if they can play guard in in a
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: regular season game. Van Roten, I think I feel a
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: little bit better about. But today's practice was rough again
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: for those interior guys. James Hudson, I think that they
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: like a little bit because of his versatility and he's
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: got some athleticism, he's got some tools, but I just
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: haven't seen it at guard. I think it happens too
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: quickly for him at guard, and I don't think he
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: has the power inside there. So hopefully Van Roten is
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: the is the the cure here, because we don't know
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: when Ben Brown's gonna come back. And I don't think
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: Ben Brown was gang busters either, frankly, especially at guard. Yeah,
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: at center he was.
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: He's fine. At center, Yeah, he's not quite the same
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: player at guard. I would agree with that. No Vin
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: Rotin's is gonna make the team, like he's here to
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: be the backup guard. He's here to replace Andrew rupt Sich.
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: I hope, so last one.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: I'll stick with the offense defense special teams.
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: Oh I think I did?
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: No, I did, yeah, offense defense, special teams.
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: It was a bad week for Andy Boorgallis. Again, I
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: don't think he's toasted.
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: I don't think they just cut him. But let's call
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: spade a spade. It's whatever the reverse of credit where
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: credits do is. Andy Borgallis had a bad week, and
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: you know, maybe he started to bounce back, but he
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: has to bounce back. He had a bad week.
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: Andy Bourgallis gotta put it, you gotta have it. You
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: go two for five in a preseason game. We got
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: to talk about it like it just is what it is,
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: especially in the day and age, when guys are, like
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: Rabel said, banging them through through sixty yards like these
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: kickers have like unlimited range. It feels like now. It
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: also was low stakes. It was a preseason game, perfect weather,
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: no conditions, no wind, beautiful night out. That is about
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: as easy as it gets yeah in the NFL for
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: a kicker, so he needs to be better. He probably
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: knows that. Hopefully a lot of it was the long
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: snapper and Julian Ashby's back, and now we'll settle things
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: down a little bit as well too. But it's on
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: the list. It's on the list, all right. Let's get
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: to some emails for last twenty minutes here. We got
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: some emails here from the people some more. This is
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: from Anthony and Seattle, who I think was also here
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: at practice today. I'm pretty sure Alex female Alex was
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: able to say hello to Anthony, so hopefully we got
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: him a T shirt or something. And Patty and Aguam
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: just maybe look like an a hole, So thanks Patty,
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: I appreciate that. But this is some love for you, Alex.
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: I just want to take a second to highlight Barth
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: and all that he does, because both of us are great.
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: But every time I hear Barth, I can tell he
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: just cares so much about the team and the fans,
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: and I do always look forward to hearing his barringer hangtimes.
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: So he's a bar stand So you appreciate, appreciate that.
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: Thank you very much that you.
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: Know we pick on you a lot, so I thought
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: i'd read a nice email. This is uh, this is
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: one that is not as nice to you, though, but
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: it's more in tongue in cheeks, so don't worry. So
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: were you on with Zoe? You did your little your
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: your camp cast. What do you guys call it?
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: We called the camp training camp report, practice report. Is
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: it making I look so short sitting next to him?
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: Is it about that?
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: No, it's not. But I have a funny Zoe story.
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: So if you want.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: To go check it out. I mean I I do.
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: Look.
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: I sit up like on the edge of the seat.
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: Just to try to fold. I mean here like he's
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: he's a monster. Like it's not.
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: Yes, I know, but it's it's I got to sit
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: next to him. I got to sit next to Taylor
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: Kyle's like, Hines is not short yet it was much
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: easier when me and you were on the air together. Taller,
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: it was taller.
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: It was nice jews. Uh. So this one's from Darius
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: and Louisville. You're allowed to swear on this, yes, this show.
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: So he said that you said good efing stuff. He
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: wanted you to say good efing crap. Oh I guess
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: I could have, yeah, because like you know, he you
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: went with the f ing part, but you didn't.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: You got to keep them on their toes.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: Yeah, you didn't finish it there. So it was good
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: stuff for me.
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: And so go check it out. It's on the Sports
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: of YouTube pages. Go check it out.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: In eighteen minutes, really quick funny Zoe story. Yeah, I
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: just saw Zo. I think he's here doing some all
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: access for the yeah preseason game like prep, and he's
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: walking through the tunnel and there's pizzas out in the tunnel.
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: These pizzas have probably been sitting there for days, so
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: I'm not even kidding. And he just I see Zoe
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: just dogging a slice of pizza from these pizzas. And
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: I said to him, Yeah, don't worry, you know, because
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: I don't know whose pizza that is. It's like, you know,
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: we're not This isn't a free for all here where
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: you can just eat anything that you see. And I said,
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: don't worry, like I won't tell anybody. And he looks
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: at me and he goes, how long do you think
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: this has been sitting here? And I just said too long?
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: So like you were definitely eating like day old pizza.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: He looks good though. Yeah, I am surprised he was
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: eating pizza, but yeah, it's a It was funny because
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: I was like, I think that pizzas I saw that
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: pizza out there yesterday and so I was still still
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: eating it. This is from a bray you, I think
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: it is. I don't know if that's his first name
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: or the last name. I apologize. Was the practice Drake
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: May had today on the same level of mac Jones's
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: practice against the Giants. I think this was also a
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: little tongue in hit.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's different. It's it's mac Jones one the starting
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: job that day. We hadn't been in mac Jones do that.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: Drake May's played in a super Bowl once, he played
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: a super Bowl. You don't really have the Giants practice.
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: I see you working on a swing back there, the swing,
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: a trip or putt. I think he had the putter gone.
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: Oh god him played in weeks dude, it's killing me?
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: Well was it? I think this? This was Yeah, that
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: was a different. That was like the anointing of mac
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: jos right that this is obviously we don't need Drake
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: Trey doesn't need to be anointed.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: He had one of those practices last year. I don't
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: remember what it was, but he had one of those
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: practices last year.
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: I would say that this was a really good practice.
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: I thought Monday was better, but Monday was Patriots on Patriots.
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: But this was a good one as well. But I
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: like that our our listeners can harken back to the
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: Max Jones.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: I mean, where were you moments in Patriots history.
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: I was still you know, I was still working for
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: Clintis at that point.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: The the tuck rule twenty eight to three, the butt fumble,
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: Quinn Moss No. Seven, Quinn Noortin going ten for ten,
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: in the in stadium practice in mac Jones against the
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: Giants when Cam Newton was in Covide. Every Patriots fan
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: remembers where they were when mac Jones tore up with
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: Giants even good that year, I don't think, no, they weren't.
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: Mac Jones tore hm a new one in that practice.
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: It was one of the flame out Daniel Jones years.
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: If it was great. The Quinn Nordin in stadium practice
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: is still peaks.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: That was what a night that you still remember exactly.
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: I think even we got he even got a smile
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: out of Bill I think I think Bill bellicher common.
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: Actice were we caught he was nine to nine and
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: we had to get down here to do the interviews.
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: We come down the field and I'm typing out my
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: tweet and I say to Tom Curran, wow, he's nine
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: and nine. Hunt Kurrent looks and he goes, he just
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: hit another one chills wow, ten out of ten.
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: And they were like icing him and the guys in
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: his face and he was just drilling.
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: Just just could not be denied. It was just unconnident
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: he ever played an NFL game.
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: I don't think so. So this is from Texas or
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: driving across Texas. Is Antonio Gibson still a free agent?
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: No, I think he's. I think I saw my sign somewhere.
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: He's so he had the ACLA. I don't know if
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: he's back, like, I don't know if he's healthy enough
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: to sign.
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: Oh, no, he is. He is unsigned.
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: So yeah, he was just asking. You know, they've been
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: obviously thinned out with definitely a little bit at running back.
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: I guess, is he's not healthy yet?
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I remember hearing I might be making
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: this up. I thought I remember to report that it
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: was like a particularly bad yeah, acl tear, so he
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: might still be working his way back. I tell you,
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: if he's healthy, I'd take him back. Ive always thought
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: he was a good player. Will give him the kick
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: returner they need to. Yeah, obviously a very good care
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: returner now assuming he can still cut the same way.
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, I mean I would not be opposed
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: to bringing Antonio Gibson back.
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: Uh. This is from a coasts or acos from Hungary, Hungary,
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: so that's cool. How do you feel about the depth
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: of the team, especially linebacker and secondary. We have a
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: deep wide receiver room, but other than that, I'm not
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: so confident. So I would say to the answer to
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: this email, I concur with some of the positions he named. Linebacker,
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: I would say cornerback specifically. In terms of secondary depth. However,
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: I think we are in a world now where we
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: have to acknowledge that our concerns are the fourth corner right,
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: the backup guard, and if they have enough run stuffers
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: on the defensive line. Yeah.
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: I mean, I've said this. At the beginning of the summer.
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: We used to talk about things being a problem in
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: the context of this is going to prevent them from winning.
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: Any game, not any games, but like maybe he's.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: Gonna be a problem week in and week out. There's
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: gonna be something. Now it's in the context of oh yeah,
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: like when you get to the AFC Championship you could
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: run into this.
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: Yes, that that's one hundred percent true.
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: Like this is margins stuff. They gotta be better on
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: the margins.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: The reaction to Greg van Rotten signing yeah says it all.
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: We are back in the world where the Oh thank
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: god we got the backup guard we needed. That's where
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: we're at. So it's a good problem.
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: It's it takes me back.
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: It does.
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: Like getting hyped about Greg van Roten is such like
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: twenty twelve to twenty eighteen Patriots fan behave.
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: I loved it. The guard the back Yeah.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: Oh we and a guy like you're highlight when he started.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: He's a veteran, he's savvy. You know why he's here, Evan,
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: you know why he's here? Why is he wants a
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: ring back? And then we start ring chasing. Yeah, these
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: guys are gonna come here because they want to ring.
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: They're not going to go for the most money, they're
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: not going to go for the playing time. They come
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: to New England because they want to win a championship.
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: Oh, I love it. This is a bunch of questions
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: here from Paul in Germany, A lot of.
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: Hang on real quick from across Usually don't do this.
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: Look at this helmet. Boise stage just announced. How sick
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: is that?
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: You're you're a sick? Oh you know that.
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: I'm so excited you're.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: You're an absolutely you know we get to do it.
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: When's when's the dumbest week of the football calendar? Don't
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: don't do that zero Like it's just week one.
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: The state's playing weeks just there's like eight teams playing.
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: It's still week one.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: You know, I think there's I forget who there's like
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: a school that's pushing to play before week zero.
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: It is the week the first week of the college.
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: Really though, there's one game on at a time. You
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: know what we're doing in three days that I will
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: then be doing until January?
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: What watching football on a Saturday? Is there football on
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: the Saturday? Or oh the preseason? Yeah, you know, I
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: don't really count that.
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: All right, Well, we're so close, we're so. I was
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: setting up my fantasy college football league, which you're going
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: to be in. Yes, you said you would say that
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: you said you would.
- 1:48:56Speaker 2: I did not say that.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: Please Liam Bathstevan on Twitter until he's no fun if
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: he doesn't join my.
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: I'm already college. I'm already in two fantasy.
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: Different I haven't played fantasy football in like ten years.
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: It's and this is such a I just was talking
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: about how we have first world problems, with the backup
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: guard being the big concern. This is a big first
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: world problem. But to be honest with you, like it's
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: hard for me to keep up with fantasy because we're
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: we're so busy on Sundays, so like, I don't really
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: like my lineup sometimes, Like Jess is texting me at
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: like twelve fifty being like you have somebody who's gone
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: by who's playing, and I'm like in Seattle or something
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: like that, and I'm like, oh gosh, I don't play
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: fantasy football anymore.
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: H'tch fantasy college Football's Saturday.
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: I know it sounds like woe is me, but it's
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: really it's true, Like.
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: I see college football.
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: Don't worry about that. I'm not sitting I do miss
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: sometimes that sitting on my couch and watching football all
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: day without having more of those.
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: This year, they've got a Wednesday, two thursdays a Monday.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: That's true that I will the opening week of the season. Well,
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: we will be able to watch the first Sunday because
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: the Patriots won't be I just just joined the league, though,
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: I'll think about it.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, you joined the league.
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: I'll ask one of Paul's questions. Paul from Germany has
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: like seven questions on the rapid fire real quick. Some
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: of them are kind of not rapid fire. Is Mike
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: on Wenue extended he's in a contract to I don't
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: think so. Me neither.
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: I think this is the last year here, especially who
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: is the guard that just resigning? Got crazy money? Somebody
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: just like near reset the market.
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: You're this is ringing a bell, But I don't remember.
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: Who was that was tant note that was in March.
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: I don't remember.
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: Oh got four years, hundred million.
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: I wonder long term they want to build an athletic line.
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: They want low MOUs and Campbell's and Wilson's and Vera
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: Tucker's and like athletic Uh, those zone blocking type of players.
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: That's not a it's not a great fit. So even
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: if they like on when who personally professionally to pay
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: him starting guard money for a guy that they don't
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: really see as a great scheme fit. I'm not sure
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: I'm sold. This is an interesting one though, that I
- 1:51:17Speaker 2: think is actually maybe more likely than we initially thought.
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: If you asked me this like before a training camp started,
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: the Mario Douglas contract extension.
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe let's see what happens with Kashan Boody first. Yeah,
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: they're not super related, but just in terms of like
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: how many receivers you have in the books next year,
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: how many are expiring, Like, yeah, I could see them
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: extending pot. You know, he's going to be in we
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: talked about this earlier in the show. He's going to
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: be in a more significant role this year, So see
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: how he does in that and then pay him. Unless
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: they're very confident, then pay him now before he puts
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: up a ton of production. But I'm not rolling out
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: them extending Pop Douglas.
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: I just it's not like they don't have to do this.
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: But I just wonder if you go to Pop Douglas
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: now and you offer him an extension that probably in
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: the long run is pretty team friendly. But it's a
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: player that has had a little bit of you know,
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: hasn't had crazy production in the league, but you're gonna
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: pay him like a kind of like a third receiver
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: type of money. He might take that, just as a
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: you know, guy that doesn't really necessarily have a ton
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: of production yet in the league. He might. He might
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: just take the money. I wouldn't be surprised. So they
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: might be able to get him on like one of
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: those old Belichick contracts that is like a really team
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: friendly contract and lock him in here long term. Let's
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: take this call from Evan and then we're going to
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: wrap it up. What's up, Evan, how are we doing.
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: I'm good, Evan.
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: I was hoping you were going to take my Matt
- 1:52:49Speaker 3: Collins joke, and I thought I was gonna get some
- 1:52:52Speaker 3: big lass last week.
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: That just didn't happen.
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: I knew it was a joke, and I did a
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: bad job of making that clear, So I apologize for that.
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: No, I think I just thought I was I was
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: funnier than I was. It's okay, but I have a
- 1:53:05Speaker 3: comment and a question. So the comment, Evan, I do
- 1:53:09Speaker 3: think you're being a little too dismissive of the Jets
- 1:53:11Speaker 3: and the Dolphins. Just I think we're gonna win those games,
- 1:53:14Speaker 3: but it's just giving me bad vibes every time. You're like, oh,
- 1:53:17Speaker 3: just chalk it up. The four wins. Devon hm elieue
- 1:53:20Speaker 3: Wolf's run game could be sneaky great. They have an
- 1:53:23Speaker 3: awesome the line too, But just.
- 1:53:26Speaker 11: This, That's what I'm saying.
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: Maybe it's just you know, not too confident. But the
- 1:53:30Speaker 3: question is this, maybe is the next off season question.
- 1:53:34Speaker 3: But I just feel like Marcus Jones like position where
- 1:53:37Speaker 3: he's really he's an amazing slot corner, but the position
- 1:53:40Speaker 3: where it feels like he's really gonna flourishes in free safety,
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: just getting in in space, letting his ball skills just
- 1:53:45Speaker 3: like out there and getting him away from the line
- 1:53:47Speaker 3: of scrimmage. I feel like, and I remember you saying
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: that Jonathan Jones, you know, the back half of his career,
- 1:53:52Speaker 3: he kind of move towards safety, and that just feels
- 1:53:53Speaker 3: like we're we're gonna get the most long kevity out
- 1:53:55Speaker 3: of I'm just one of your thoughts on that.
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: Thanks, Yeah, thanks for the call, Evan. You know, Marcus
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: Jones is an interesting one because I think we all
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: thought this time last year that it wasn't really a
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: fit for what Vrabel wanted, and then he's just such
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: a good player that he just kind of punched through
- 1:54:11Speaker 2: that and was just like no, like I'm too good
- 1:54:13Speaker 2: for you to just move on. So I think that
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: there was an alternate universe where Marcus Jones was in
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: the same category as Kyle Duggar and Jabriel Peppers, Like
- 1:54:25Speaker 2: that universe existed in some other playing of football world,
- 1:54:29Speaker 2: right where like it just wasn't a fit, you know,
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: system fit, scheme fit, and Marcus Jones just proved them
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: wrong or just broke through that. I think that the
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: nickel safety thing kind of blurs lines at times. I
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: would say, so maybe it's a little bit uh semantics,
- 1:54:47Speaker 2: but I think that the way that they rotate the
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: back end, a lot of the times he kind of
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: ends up in safety spot sometimes. I don't know if
- 1:54:54Speaker 2: he's like a pure free safety like Devin mccordy, Kevin
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: Byered free safety. But maybe that's it. On the Jets
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: and the Dolphins, I'm going to remain dismissive. I think
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: the Dolphins have one of the worst rosters in football.
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean at Miami's At Miami, there's always a
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: little bit of a boogeyman thing. That comes with that.
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: But short of that, I mean that Dolphins seems bad.
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: I think the Jets have a better chance of being
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: frisky just because they have a better defense. I think
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: they have a better defense and better roster talent that
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: they've built up a little bit. Although Omar Cooper Junior
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: apparently is not having a great camp with the Jets.
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: But in general, you know, David Bailey, Kenyon Sadik like
- 1:55:31Speaker 2: they have some talent, young talent on that team. Garrett
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: Wilson's obviously still there, Breest Hall. But the Dolphins I
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: think are a bottom five roster in football, and yeah,
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: that should be two wins. Now the game of Miami.
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: I agree, there's always wonky stuff that happens in Miami.
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: It's a house of horrors at times. But I think
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: they should win both those games. Maybe the Jets are
- 1:55:54Speaker 2: a little bit more frisky. We'll see, although I think
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: they played the Jets late if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: Yes it's Christmas.
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: I think there's a solid chance the Jets have nothing
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: to play.
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: For and are way out of it.
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: At that point. Uh So, we'll see, but in my mind,
- 1:56:13Speaker 2: I would say they should go four and oh against
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: the Jets and the Dolphins. Anything worse than three and
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: one against sug Jests and the Dolphins to me is
- 1:56:20Speaker 2: a failure, Like you can't you can't be losing games
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: like that to those teams. That Dolphins team is that
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: do you see those skill positions that were going from
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: Tyree Hill and Jalen Battle to what they have now
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: at wide receiver? Uh? Is a is a tough blow,
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: Like they're totally.
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: Resett did just activate Chris Bell though, they did just
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: activate see what he can do. We both liked them
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: in the draft, so.
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: Yeah, they're they're hard resetting that geam right now. So, uh,
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: we'll see what that. Uh, maybe the Jets will be
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: a little bit more frisky. Maybe we'll see. I'm not
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: that optimistic about that either. Yep. Also just quickly like
- 1:56:57Speaker 2: do we believe in Aaron Glenn because Aaron Glenn's still
- 1:56:59Speaker 2: the coach Jets? And I thought Aaron Aaron Glenn was
- 1:57:03Speaker 2: like teetering on one and done, like he was teetering
- 1:57:05Speaker 2: on DRADMEO status.
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: And yeah, I picked him yesterday on Felgrim has to
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: be the first coach fired. So it's fair sneaky my
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: uh sleeper pick for that was Zach Taylor.
- 1:57:18Speaker 2: You know how I feel about Zach Taylor. I've been
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: saying for a while now that Zach Taylor. Yeah, you
- 1:57:23Speaker 2: give any coach Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase and T Higgins
- 1:57:26Speaker 2: and they're gonna have a good offense. All right, we're
- 1:57:28Speaker 2: gonna wrap it up for today. Next week, Ace is
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: a little bit a little bit wonky with times because
- 1:57:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna be traveling to Cleveland on Wednesday during our
- 1:57:40Speaker 2: normal showtime.
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: I figured this out yet, So I.
- 1:57:43Speaker 2: Think Tuesday is the day that we're gonna have to
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: do it, and I think we're gonna have to do
- 1:57:48Speaker 2: it Tuesday morning before Patriots Unfiltered, so like kind of
- 1:57:52Speaker 2: our regular season time slot.
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: Well, but they have a late practice on Tuesday.
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: They do have a late practice, but the practice is
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: at like too ish and filter twelve to two. Okay,
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: So I think we're gonna have to go ten to
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: noon before Unfiltered on Tuesday. But we'll keep you updated
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: on our socials and everything on that. I'm going to
- 1:58:11Speaker 2: the preseason game, first road trip, looking forward to it,
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: so that would be good. Not really looking forward to it.
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: Cleveland preseason games kind of tough for nothing like that.
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: But we're gonna go. It's gonna be fun, we're gonna
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: have a good time. We're gonna make some friends along
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: the way. So we'll be back next week on Catch
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: twenty two at some point on Tuesday, I would say
- 1:58:31Speaker 2: probably ten to noon. Like I said, we'll keep you
- 1:58:34Speaker 2: updated on socials and all that good stuff, and you
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: can obviously get the show on demand on YouTube, Spotify,
- 1:58:42Speaker 2: Apple podcasts wherever. Until then, we'll see you guys next week.
