Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie and Samantha. I welcome to stuff
- 0:07Speaker 1: I never told your production I heard you, and.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome to another edition of Happy Hour where I sound
- 0:22Speaker 2: like a frog.
- 0:24Speaker 1: The color into that sound.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Apparently, but I sound so creepy. It's the allergy season.
- 0:32Speaker 2: But in this because of this voice problem, because I
- 0:35Speaker 2: have been hit with allergies, we have skipped another Sex
- 0:39Speaker 2: of the City watch just for this one week. I'm
- 0:42Speaker 2: hoping that my voice comes back and the allergies will like,
- 0:46Speaker 2: calm down. But all the pollen is out. All the
- 0:48Speaker 2: pollen is out. Annie, did you see it?
- 0:52Speaker 1: I haven't seen it, and now I'm nervous.
- 0:54Speaker 2: It's all over my car. It's bad. Anyway, we are back.
- 0:59Speaker 2: If you're doing Happy hourish things, please do so responsibly.
- 1:03Speaker 2: None of the things we talk about are necessarily sponsors,
- 1:05Speaker 2: even though I am talking about some trademarks because I
- 1:08Speaker 2: am a part of those now. But before we start, Annie,
- 1:11Speaker 2: are you doing Happy hoursh things? Whatch you doing?
- 1:14Speaker 1: I'm just drinking warm water with lemon and ginger, prioritizing
- 1:19Speaker 1: health kind of Well, sure, let's put it that way.
- 1:23Speaker 1: That's a very nice way to put it. I was
- 1:25Speaker 1: up very late and then I actually slept. My sleep
- 1:31Speaker 1: schedules all over the place right now in a way
- 1:34Speaker 1: that I cannot predict. But I actually slept till eight
- 1:36Speaker 1: thirty today, which was not good. I mean, it was
- 1:40Speaker 1: good that I got more sleep. But we recorded with
- 1:42Speaker 1: Eaves today and she's in early ye. She likes to
- 1:46Speaker 1: record early in the morning, so I kind of just
- 1:48Speaker 1: messed with my schedule and I forgot we were doing
- 1:51Speaker 1: a happy hour after this, so it was sort of
- 1:53Speaker 1: a accidental thing.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I didn't call it a non alcoholic yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I mean, normally when I make a hot toddy, it's
- 2:04Speaker 1: this and just a tiny tiny bit of whiskey.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Sure, I promise, because.
- 2:09Speaker 1: It actually makes me a little nauseous, and this is
- 2:12Speaker 1: supposed to be you know.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yeah, oh dear, well, I'm keeping up with the bubble
- 2:18Speaker 2: water God because my voice is just amazing, as you
- 2:22Speaker 2: can tell. Yeah, he's also is on a different time
- 2:26Speaker 2: zone because she's insult.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yes, yes, but even when she wasn't.
- 2:30Speaker 2: It's true she liked to do it early, yeah, which
- 2:34Speaker 2: you know what, It is kind of nice because typically
- 2:36Speaker 2: we record later. Because I am a procrastinator, I'm like, hey,
- 2:39Speaker 2: let's do it at one, So we're gonna get this
- 2:42Speaker 2: done today. A little early peek behind the curtains, and
- 2:44Speaker 2: I say, today, you don't know, you don't know what
- 2:45Speaker 2: today is. I'm gonna leave it at that. It's six no.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But with this happy hour, I was gonna give you all
- 2:52Speaker 2: an update. I kind of already hinted at it before
- 2:54Speaker 2: about the fact that yes, I am now a licensed
- 2:57Speaker 2: a Zoomba instructor and I am currently teaching with LA
- 3:01Speaker 2: Fitness in the Atlanta metro area Decatur area, yay, and
- 3:06Speaker 2: I teach four times a week, and it's been a
- 3:08Speaker 2: whole new theme because I stupidly have also started HRT,
- 3:15Speaker 2: the hormone replacement treatment, because I do feel like my
- 3:18Speaker 2: pavement of pall symptoms have been kind of arising, and
- 3:22Speaker 2: I want to combat that as soon as possible without
- 3:25Speaker 2: any hiccups. Maybe I'm doing it too early, but it does,
- 3:29Speaker 2: you know, mess with your hormones and your like fatigue
- 3:32Speaker 2: and all of that. So I feel like doing both
- 3:34Speaker 2: those things, which causes a lot of anxiety for me,
- 3:37Speaker 2: because even though it's group fitness and it doesn't seem
- 3:41Speaker 2: like a big deal, it still is a performance thing
- 3:43Speaker 2: for me, and that anxiety does skyrocket, and we know
- 3:46Speaker 2: with hormones that also can add to this as well
- 3:50Speaker 2: as daylight saving start terrible, terrible. So these like combination
- 3:58Speaker 2: of factors have all come together in one big boom.
- 4:02Speaker 2: And I will say, like the anxiety I was kind
- 4:06Speaker 2: of I was more excited when I first started because
- 4:08Speaker 2: the expectation was low. No one knows who I am really,
- 4:11Speaker 2: people don't know some of these classes are happening, so
- 4:14Speaker 2: like a little less pressure, but I have amazing support,
- 4:17Speaker 2: Like I have some of the best people in the
- 4:19Speaker 2: Zumba cardio workout world that have been my friends for
- 4:23Speaker 2: ten years or more so, so like some of my
- 4:25Speaker 2: longest running friendships as you may have already tell with
- 4:29Speaker 2: like we brought people on the show from that kind
- 4:32Speaker 2: of networking. But like it's still nerve wracking to come in.
- 4:38Speaker 2: But when I first came in, it felt like new
- 4:40Speaker 2: and exciting, and like the first week I was like, okay, okay,
- 4:43Speaker 2: I only have five people to day, that's fine. I
- 4:44Speaker 2: had seven people today, That's fine. One of the nights
- 4:47Speaker 2: was when the flood was happening, Like we had a
- 4:49Speaker 2: pretty bad flood situation in downtown Atlanta, so storms were
- 4:53Speaker 2: really bad and people still came out. I was like,
- 4:55Speaker 2: Oh my god, that means so much to me because
- 4:58Speaker 2: I didn't think anybody would come out. I didn't want
- 4:59Speaker 2: to come out in this rain, but I had to,
- 5:02Speaker 2: which is a whole different conversation. But like, people is
- 5:04Speaker 2: coming to support me. It was great. But that's like
- 5:06Speaker 2: the second week I was like, oh no, what if
- 5:10Speaker 2: people don't like me? What if people like are telling
- 5:12Speaker 2: people not to come, because apparently I had gotten uh
- 5:16Speaker 2: someone had told me that they had reached out to them,
- 5:18Speaker 2: someone had reached out to hint them asking who I
- 5:21Speaker 2: was because they saw me on the schedule, and I'm like,
- 5:23Speaker 2: oh no, And so the anxiety skyrocketed the second weekend
- 5:28Speaker 2: because I'm like, now people kind of know who I am.
- 5:31Speaker 2: People are telling me, like hyping me up the people
- 5:33Speaker 2: that I know, but I don't really trust because I'm like,
- 5:37Speaker 2: you're just being nice because you have to because you're
- 5:39Speaker 2: my friends. I need to know what people show up
- 5:43Speaker 2: so slowly, like it's building. That second week I was
- 5:46Speaker 2: even more anxious, ridden to the point that I told
- 5:49Speaker 2: my partner I want to quit. Second weekend. I can't
- 5:54Speaker 2: say nothing other than vibe. But sometimes I like to quit,
- 5:56Speaker 2: but people did show up. I did have kind of
- 5:59Speaker 2: bigger crowd. This is my third fourth weekend. I can't remember, y'all,
- 6:04Speaker 2: And like people are getting to know me and coming
- 6:06Speaker 2: to see me and like talking about telling other people
- 6:09Speaker 2: that they want to come to my class. They're telling
- 6:10Speaker 2: me to my face they liked it. Who knows. So
- 6:14Speaker 2: it's getting there to that point that I'll make all right.
- 6:16Speaker 2: I'm getting more confident. I'm losing my voice, however, because
- 6:19Speaker 2: again the allergy seasons, as well as using my voice
- 6:22Speaker 2: as much as I am, I don't like using mics
- 6:26Speaker 2: when I teach because it picks up everything, including my
- 6:30Speaker 2: heavy breathing. I talk to myself when I make mistakes,
- 6:34Speaker 2: so could you imagine I curse at myself and I'm like,
- 6:37Speaker 2: oh no, that was stupid time of thing, like kind
- 6:39Speaker 2: of ours, and I don't want that to be projected
- 6:44Speaker 2: on a mic. So it kind of feels like I
- 6:48Speaker 2: have to. And also we've already talked about the downfalls
- 6:52Speaker 2: of social media and how I'm really not great at it.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I'm now on social media for this specific thing, and
- 7:01Speaker 2: it feels like work in itself. Yeah, oh yeah, I
- 7:08Speaker 2: mean I believe it I have to take pictures of myself.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I hate taking pictures of myself. You'll rarely see a
- 7:15Speaker 2: serious picture of me. Like my partner, who is a photographer,
- 7:20Speaker 2: hates that I make faces. He's like, well, I won't
- 7:22Speaker 2: you just make a normal face. I'm like, because I
- 7:24Speaker 2: don't like my picture being bacon, so I'm gonna look
- 7:26Speaker 2: really silly right now. If you look at some of
- 7:31Speaker 2: my Instagram photos, you'll just see my forehead with me
- 7:33Speaker 2: making a weird face. Yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Back when we used to do birthday posts, it was
- 7:39Speaker 1: always hard for me to find a picture of you.
- 7:46Speaker 2: The pressure is too much. Is too much because I'm
- 7:50Speaker 2: like automatically. One of the things that I think is
- 7:53Speaker 2: the most likable about me is my self deprecating humor
- 7:57Speaker 2: a little bit, uh in my sarcasm. So that's what portrays.
- 8:02Speaker 2: That's what I portray on photos as well. I'm trying
- 8:06Speaker 2: to get better at it, y'all. It's hard, but I
- 8:09Speaker 2: am into this adventure now. I have started doing things.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I love the fact that I can do my own routines,
- 8:15Speaker 2: which I also feel a little bit anxious about because
- 8:17Speaker 2: I'm like, what if people hate it? So far? Up
- 8:19Speaker 2: and told my music list is amazing and my setup
- 8:22Speaker 2: is really good. So I'm like, okay, okay, okay. Again,
- 8:26Speaker 2: they could be lying to me, but I'm gonna go
- 8:29Speaker 2: with it. And I have again like I have such
- 8:31Speaker 2: a great core group of people who show up for
- 8:35Speaker 2: me that are from that group that I just love
- 8:39Speaker 2: everything about that. When you have that type of hype energy,
- 8:43Speaker 2: it's a vibe that the vibe is immaculate for just
- 8:47Speaker 2: like an hour, all you're doing is doing something fun
- 8:50Speaker 2: with a group of people, not thinking about any of
- 8:52Speaker 2: the differences or the worst things in the world, sweating
- 8:55Speaker 2: it up, enjoying the music, and kind of just letting
- 8:58Speaker 2: it go. And there's something genuinely joyful about that moment.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I am addicted to it. If I don't, if I'm
- 9:06Speaker 2: not able to go to do something like that for
- 9:10Speaker 2: a couple of days, I feel awful. Like I feel
- 9:13Speaker 2: it in my body, I feel it in my spirit
- 9:15Speaker 2: that I have ignored a part of me that needs
- 9:19Speaker 2: that moment and the types of music and like being
- 9:23Speaker 2: able to dance with people, being able to be goofy,
- 9:26Speaker 2: with people being able to yell, with people being able
- 9:28Speaker 2: to like HiPE each other up, with people being able
- 9:30Speaker 2: to see new people learning something new, you know, like
- 9:33Speaker 2: that's my favorite part of this entire thing, and then
- 9:38Speaker 2: building a commaderie with a group of people that you
- 9:41Speaker 2: would never have done so in any other situation. It's
- 9:46Speaker 2: just a great moment. I will say, since the beginning
- 10:02Speaker 2: of this journey, I have noted there's some drama like
- 10:05Speaker 2: any other thing, and I'm like, I don't want any
- 10:08Speaker 2: part of that. But I feel like if I try
- 10:12Speaker 2: to get away from that, I might miss out on
- 10:15Speaker 2: some of the networking, which is odd because I'm still growing.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I can't wait to get to the moment where I
- 10:22Speaker 2: have my core group of people and then like a
- 10:25Speaker 2: steady schedule with a steady amount, like hopefully I'll get
- 10:28Speaker 2: like a pac da in class where I don't have
- 10:30Speaker 2: to do anything about any of those things like networking anymore. Yeah,
- 10:35Speaker 2: because I feel like that I kills it. It feels
- 10:37Speaker 2: like a popularity contest that I've never wanted to be
- 10:39Speaker 2: a part of.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Yeah, And I could be wrong. I think you're like me,
- 10:45Speaker 1: although I think you're more tuned into it than I am.
- 10:49Speaker 1: But a lot of times I don't realize necessarily that
- 10:56Speaker 1: I'm in some drama or a popularity contest until someone
- 11:00Speaker 1: tells me directly and I'm like, what, wait, I don't
- 11:05Speaker 1: I don't want any of this.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Here's the thing, though, Like this is the thing when
- 11:10Speaker 2: I wasn't a part of that community like that, when
- 11:13Speaker 2: I was just a participant.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I saw, I did see it, and I'm not gonna lie.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I'm a little bit of a petty monster. Like I
- 11:21Speaker 2: love seeing it from Afar because it wasn't like detrimental,
- 11:25Speaker 2: you know what I mean. But it was like silly
- 11:27Speaker 2: high school dramas that I was like, y'all are silly,
- 11:29Speaker 2: Like everybody needs to like really take a breath because
- 11:32Speaker 2: this is silly. But now that I'm a part of it,
- 11:35Speaker 2: like there's this level of like competitiveness that I don't
- 11:38Speaker 2: understand because in my mind, I'm like, people go to
- 11:41Speaker 2: what they want, so what if is this on the
- 11:44Speaker 2: same timeframe? We have very different styles and that's amazing.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I love that there's so many options out there that
- 11:52Speaker 2: is beautiful and people can go to different things. Does
- 11:56Speaker 2: it feel like a rejection sometimes, yes, because I have
- 11:59Speaker 2: a build. I have a whole thing with it rejecttion
- 12:01Speaker 2: and we know this, but like it also feels like
- 12:05Speaker 2: I would never take that out on someone else who
- 12:07Speaker 2: is just as great or doing just as much as
- 12:09Speaker 2: I am, you know what I mean, It just more
- 12:11Speaker 2: a reflection. It feels like a reflection of myself, which is,
- 12:14Speaker 2: you know, something I have to talk about with therapist often.
- 12:16Speaker 2: But you know, like that's that's a different thing. But
- 12:19Speaker 2: feeling like where competitors is an odd level.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Yeah, especially like drama wise, I get like you are
- 12:31Speaker 1: kind of technically competitors if you have the same slat,
- 12:34Speaker 1: but like you said that, it can be more. Hey,
- 12:37Speaker 1: this person just purposes. This person purposes as far as
- 12:40Speaker 1: I know, at least currently, you don't really have a
- 12:43Speaker 1: lot of control over your schedule. No, So it's not
- 12:46Speaker 1: like you were like ah coming for you.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I mean I tried my best to make sure I
- 12:51Speaker 2: like avoid it because I still want to go back
- 12:53Speaker 2: to those classes that I love, like that I have
- 12:55Speaker 2: been doing for ten years. I'm like, I wanted to
- 12:57Speaker 2: go see my friend fred or DeMarco, go see my
- 13:00Speaker 2: friend Gigi and do her classes. Like there's so many
- 13:03Speaker 2: good classes that I want to also be part of.
- 13:05Speaker 2: So like it kind of keeps you fresh because you're
- 13:08Speaker 2: doing different people's styles and and Raphael he's another person
- 13:11Speaker 2: that I'm like, I love their style, but like, yeah,
- 13:14Speaker 2: it does feel an interesting level like of like, Okay,
- 13:17Speaker 2: I have to be mindful, and I'm trying to be
- 13:19Speaker 2: mindful in this. Like there's a lot in this conversation
- 13:22Speaker 2: about respecting everybody's space, everybody's style, people's choreography. I will
- 13:28Speaker 2: say I don't seem as original choreography as a few
- 13:31Speaker 2: of other people that I had started out with, and
- 13:34Speaker 2: because of the people like that know for ten years
- 13:36Speaker 2: they had their usually original choreography. And then I realized
- 13:40Speaker 2: there's a big network, because I was always impressed that
- 13:42Speaker 2: there's so many I mean, but like there's a big
- 13:44Speaker 2: network that helps you well, So anybody who's interested that
- 13:47Speaker 2: doesn't do their own choreography, you can do it really easily,
- 13:51Speaker 2: like learning different people's stuff and then sharing in the
- 13:53Speaker 2: community and then crediting those people in the community. That's
- 13:57Speaker 2: like a whole big level of like I got to
- 13:59Speaker 2: try to do this contra anxiously. I as a non
- 14:02Speaker 2: black person in a culture like a Latin because Zumba
- 14:05Speaker 2: is Latin based, but I do a lot of hip
- 14:07Speaker 2: hop type of music as well. Understanding that I need
- 14:11Speaker 2: to be respectful to this culture as well, like there's
- 14:13Speaker 2: such a like. Of course, I think I might think
- 14:16Speaker 2: too hard on it because I've been told by several
- 14:17Speaker 2: different instructors being like, you're thinking too much. I'm like, yeah,
- 14:20Speaker 2: but you don't understand. In my background me talk about
- 14:25Speaker 2: this on a podcast. This is my job as a
- 14:28Speaker 2: podcast to meet conscient, just and culturally respectful. But it's
- 14:32Speaker 2: a whole different level of conversation. But on that note,
- 14:35Speaker 2: just to check in, I am doing okay. My voice
- 14:38Speaker 2: is doing uh okay, I gotta figure this part out.
- 14:42Speaker 2: I am very much enjoying it. I love meeting new
- 14:44Speaker 2: people as anxious and as much of an introvert as
- 14:47Speaker 2: I am. That has been a challenge, y'all. That is
- 14:49Speaker 2: probably the biggest challenge. The social media has been a
- 14:52Speaker 2: big challenge. But being able to dance with people, being
- 14:54Speaker 2: able to help people dance like who think they can't
- 14:58Speaker 2: or who are nervous to do it. I've been told
- 15:00Speaker 2: I'm very good at queuing and teaching, which is why
- 15:02Speaker 2: I kind of got into it, as well as my
- 15:04Speaker 2: original choreography. So if y'all are in Atlanta, you're interested
- 15:08Speaker 2: in coming to an LA fitness class, you should do it.
- 15:10Speaker 2: They have guest passes. I'm trying to separate my personalities
- 15:16Speaker 2: and interest because I'm like, not everyone who takes my
- 15:21Speaker 2: Zooma classes are going to agree with what I talk
- 15:25Speaker 2: about on the podcast, and I don't want them. I
- 15:28Speaker 2: don't want to know who they are because if I do,
- 15:30Speaker 2: I'll probably lose respect for them as well. I thought
- 15:33Speaker 2: about this the other day when I started learning more
- 15:34Speaker 2: about some people. I'm like, oh no, oh no, we
- 15:38Speaker 2: can't be real life friends. We can only be Zoomba friends.
- 15:44Speaker 2: But you know, stuff like that. But I am trying
- 15:46Speaker 2: to separate those things out. So but if y'all are interested,
- 15:49Speaker 2: you should come on and check out, check me out,
- 15:53Speaker 2: come support and support all the and do things that
- 15:56Speaker 2: you love. That's and I was thinking about this too,
- 15:59Speaker 2: like I've told you many times, it must be my
- 16:02Speaker 2: quarter life now midlife crisis for real, for real, because
- 16:06Speaker 2: at least I've chosen a healthy way of finding my
- 16:10Speaker 2: new activity in my new hobby, which this is not new,
- 16:12Speaker 2: like I said, I've done this for like ten twelve years,
- 16:14Speaker 2: like I've been in this kind of workout doing it
- 16:20Speaker 2: three or four five times a week, so this is
- 16:22Speaker 2: not new, but the teaching to being actually invested in
- 16:26Speaker 2: something is the new part. And then it feels like
- 16:31Speaker 2: one of those moments I'm like, man, why did I
- 16:33Speaker 2: have to wait till my knees decided to hurt? What
- 16:37Speaker 2: was the decision?
- 16:39Speaker 1: It's like, you got a doctor in zumba.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Correct you can't got men doctor zumba.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Sam, all right, I am so happy for you. I
- 16:54Speaker 1: love hearing about this. Me and my friend Katie are
- 16:57Speaker 1: planning on coming. Yeah, but Katie had never heard well,
- 17:00Speaker 1: she'd heard of zoomba, but she didn't quite know what
- 17:02Speaker 1: it was. And after she like agreed, she looked it
- 17:05Speaker 1: up and she texted me and she was like, we're
- 17:07Speaker 1: in trouble and I was like, I know, friend, you
- 17:11Speaker 1: think I don't know.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Katie sent me a text and I didn't even notice
- 17:15Speaker 2: it until after the fact that she was like, I'm
- 17:16Speaker 2: so excited I'm gonna come to class and then she realized.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But she's like, I spelled it wrong. She spelled the
- 17:21Speaker 2: zo oh, I think that's my fault. I was like,
- 17:29Speaker 2: I was like, I didn't even notice it. But that
- 17:30Speaker 2: made me laugh that you actually corrected yourself you're like,
- 17:33Speaker 2: she got to come back, like I smelled it. She
- 17:36Speaker 2: was looking at videos and did she ready? All right? Well, yeah,
- 17:41Speaker 2: when we all come in, we're gonna come back and
- 17:42Speaker 2: talk about it. Me and you.
