- 0:00Good morning, friends, welcome back.
- 0:02It's friendly. So glad that you're here this
- 0:05morning and super excited to sit with scripture together.
- 0:09This passage has many layers and really challenged me in my quiet
- 0:14time. So we're going to jump right in.
- 0:16We're going to be in Matthew chapter 21, verses 18 through
- 0:2122, and it's titled Jesus Says the Disciples Can Pray for
- 0:25Anything. Early in the morning, as Jesus
- 0:29was on his way back to the city, he was hungry.
- 0:33Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found
- 0:36nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, May you
- 0:41never bear fruit again. Immediately the tree withered.
- 0:45When the disciples saw this, they were amazed.
- 0:48How did the fig tree wither so quickly?
- 0:50They asked. Jesus replied, truly I tell you,
- 0:55if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what
- 0:59was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this
- 1:02mountain, go throw yourself into the sea and it will be done.
- 1:07If you believe you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.
- 1:12All right, so I am going to go through my takeaways and the
- 1:17first one I want to start with is talking about the fig tree.
- 1:20So first, Jesus is fully God and fully human.
- 1:24That's his divinity. And that means that because he's
- 1:29fully man, he actually got hungry, which I think is so cool
- 1:32to read about. I don't know about you, but when
- 1:35I'm hungry personally, my family knows it's probably not the best
- 1:40time to have a deep combo with me until I've gotten food in my
- 1:44system because I get hangry, as I call it.
- 1:48So we know that Jesus is fully God too, so he does not sin.
- 1:53He's not snapping at people. But I think we can imagine the
- 1:57human frustration here. He's hungry, he needs food, and
- 2:02he sees a tree that looks like it should have food and good
- 2:05fruit, but when he gets closer, there's actually nothing there.
- 2:09So a parallel to think about in real life, if you go to a
- 2:13restaurant, you expect them to have food to feed you, right?
- 2:18And if they don't, you'd probably be confused, maybe
- 2:21frustrated, wondering, OK, well, what is the point?
- 2:25What have you been doing this whole time in the kitchen or why
- 2:29are you here? So the fig tree, it looked good
- 2:32from far away, but once you got once you got up close, it had no
- 2:36fruit. This connects directly to what
- 2:39we saw yesterday with the temple.
- 2:42It was outwardly impressive, but inwardly it was super corrupt
- 2:47and it was basically a structure without the spiritual health.
- 2:51And so this tree, it has leaves with no fruit.
- 2:55So here's the heart check question I'm going to give
- 2:57y'all. Is your life actually bearing
- 3:00good fruit or only the appearance of it?
- 3:04Galatians 622 through 23 talks about this fruit.
- 3:08It's the fruit of the spirit. A lot of us know it, but I'm
- 3:11going to read it over y'all. The fruit of the spirit is
- 3:14Lovejoy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
- 3:20faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
- 3:24Now think about all of those things as I'm continuing through
- 3:27this. But these are not surface level
- 3:30traits. They are real proof, evidence
- 3:33that Christ is truly growing within you.
- 3:36And fruit matters because fruit is meant to also be enjoyed.
- 3:42See, it draws people in a life marked by the Holy Spirit.
- 3:46It naturally blesses others, It refreshes others.
- 3:50So that doesn't contradict being the salt of the earth that we
- 3:53see in scripture too. Because salt preserves and it
- 3:56flavors, but the fruit nourishes.
- 4:00And so both are meant to impact the world around us.
- 4:03But here's something really cool that stood out to me while I was
- 4:06also going through commentary. So in the Bible, fig trees are
- 4:11often linked to hiding. We see Adam and Eve in the
- 4:14Garden of Eden. They used fig leaves to cover
- 4:18themselves when they were hiding from God.
- 4:20And then there's a story about Zacchaeus and we hear him hiding
- 4:24in a Sycamore tree, which is actually a type of fig tree.
- 4:28So it made me wonder, can hiding, possibly playing it safe
- 4:35or keeping faith at a distance, lead to that lack of fruit?
- 4:40So I just want you all to think about that and also consider
- 4:44that good fruit, it grows in sunlight when it's nourished and
- 4:50protected and in God's presence and obedience and community with
- 4:56other believers in the church pouring into you.
- 4:59That's how your good fruit is going to grow.
- 5:02So ask yourself, is my faith stronger today than it was last
- 5:08year? Is there evidence of me growing,
- 5:12or am I just maintaining an appearance of a good Christian
- 5:16or a good follower of Christ? Because if you're growing in
- 5:20fruit, that's evidence that Christ is truly growing within
- 5:24you. So now I'm going to go into
- 5:27praying with faith. Jesus shifts the conversation to
- 5:31faith and prayer after the fig tree.
- 5:33And I believe this is where all connects.
- 5:35It's so cool to see. So whenever he is talking about
- 5:39mountains being thrown into the sea, he's using a metaphor for
- 5:42people to understand. Like his parables, mountains
- 5:46often represented kingdoms and power, and then the sea
- 5:50symbolizes nations or people groups.
- 5:54So in other words, faith gives believers authority.
- 5:58This does not mean magic. It's not superstitious power,
- 6:02but access to the power of an omnipotent God.
- 6:06That means all powerful. The one who commands the wind
- 6:11and the waves. Y'all creation obeys him.
- 6:14So prayer with faith isn't about controlling outcomes, it's about
- 6:20trusting the God who already reigns over all of creation, who
- 6:25already is in control of the outcomes.
- 6:28And yes, God's will always prevails.
- 6:32But here's the key. The more that you grow in
- 6:36Christlikeness, the more His fruit of the Spirit grow within
- 6:40you, the more that His desires become your desires.
- 6:44And that's where the verse Psalm 37 for delight in the Lord, and
- 6:48He will give you the desires of your heart.
- 6:50That's what it means. You start wanting what He wants
- 6:54when you're pursuing holiness and righteousness and godliness.
- 6:58And when your heart truly aligns with His Kingdom, then your
- 7:02prayers, they are going to reflect His will.
- 7:05So that's the connection that I want to bring for us.
- 7:08More fruit of the Spirit means you're made more like Christ.
- 7:13Your desires are aligned with God, your prayers are prayed in
- 7:17faith, and whenever we get answered, prayers that boosts
- 7:21our faith. So I just want y'all to ask
- 7:24yourself right now, are you praying just for comfort, for
- 7:30your own benefit, or for God's glory?
- 7:35And are you not asking God for something because you've already
- 7:39assumed in your head that he won't or can't answer that?
- 7:44Because if God is at the center of your heart, don't believe the
- 7:48lie that he does not care about those desires to things like
- 7:53godly marriages and spouses. If you want kids and you want to
- 7:57raise them up to know Jesus, you want a job so that you can be
- 8:00provided for? Y'all, the timing matters, yes,
- 8:05and God knows the optimal moment to give good gifts.
- 8:10That's why we have to wait sometimes.
- 8:12But He wants to give you those desires if they are rooted in
- 8:16Him. So I just want to encourage
- 8:18y'all, do not give up praying. Don't let the appearance of
- 8:21mountains like we've seen the story discourage your faith
- 8:25because you're asking the one who can move that mountain into
- 8:29the sea within a snap of his fingers in an instant.
- 8:34So y'all pray with faith, pray with confidence and pray with
- 8:39the authority that you have been given because the God of the
- 8:43universe, his power, it lives within you as a Christian and
- 8:48believer. So let's move into prayer right
- 8:51now. Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 8:56your word. Thank you for the way that it
- 8:59challenges us not just to look the part, but to truly live out
- 9:05our faith. Lord, we do not want lives just
- 9:09full of leaves with no fruit. We want hearts that are
- 9:14transformed by Your spirit, that have the fruit that is evident
- 9:20so that others are drawn to you. Lord, would you reveal to us
- 9:25where we may be hiding, where we've settled for just an
- 9:28appearance or maybe faith from a distance?
- 9:34God, we need Your help to abide with you, you and us and us and
- 9:41You. We know that that's where the
- 9:43real fruit grows, is when we grow in intimacy with you.
- 9:46Jesus, would you teach us to pray with more faith, not
- 9:51doubting your power, not shrinking back with fear?
- 9:55Lord, it says in Your Word that Your Spirit does not give us
- 10:00fear or timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.
- 10:05So may we trust You fully. God align our desires with
- 10:09yours. We want to show others your
- 10:14Kingdom in the way that we love and believe and serve God.
- 10:20We give you the mountains that seem so scary and intimidating.
- 10:25We give those to you, we surrender them to you.
- 10:29We know that you are more than able.
- 10:32We love you and we ask this all in your name, Jesus.
- 10:37Amen. OK, well I loved getting to go
- 10:41through this passage. I think it was an awesome
- 10:43reminder for me and I pray it was for y'all as well.
- 10:46And hope that y'all have a great rest of your day.
- 10:49I will see y'all on Thursday's podcast.
