On a freezing Sunday morning in 2019, nine-year-old Serenity Dennard ran out of a children's treatment facility in South Dakota's Black Hills. A witness watched her turn north along a rural road without a coat until the trees swallowed her from view. Three to five minutes later, that same road was empty.
