- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie and Smith. I'm open to stuff.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I never told you, production I heard you, and today
- 0:19Speaker 1: we are bringing back a classic happy hour that we
- 0:22Speaker 1: did on Easter because despite the fact that I completely
- 0:28Speaker 1: forgot it, this is Easter weekend, as.
- 0:31Speaker 2: It comes out, this was early.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Yeah, well I feel like it was late. So that's interesting. Yeah,
- 0:41Speaker 1: it lands all over the place. I do have. I
- 0:44Speaker 1: don't really do anything special for Easter anymore, but I
- 0:47Speaker 1: make like a spring meal. I make a bright spring meal.
- 0:51Speaker 2: You don't do the hunt anymore when your mom gives
- 0:54Speaker 2: you all the.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Money, Yes, I don't. And so that's you know. Not
- 0:59Speaker 1: only is this time, but one of the reasons I
- 1:00Speaker 1: wanted to bring this up is as discussed in this episode.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I loved that. Yeah, I was jealous. But it's funny
- 1:11Speaker 1: to me how many people tease me about that to
- 1:14Speaker 1: this day, Like I still get messages about not just
- 1:18Speaker 1: like the money aspect that I got money from Easter
- 1:22Speaker 1: ec hunting, but just that I did it so long
- 1:25Speaker 1: into adulthood, Like I've already gotten like four or five
- 1:29Speaker 1: messages teasing me.
- 1:30Speaker 2: About was jealous.
- 1:32Speaker 1: It was so fun everybody was jealous. Yeah, I'm not
- 1:36Speaker 1: mad about it. It's just kind of funny that I
- 1:39Speaker 1: somehow have cemented that in people's minds, where every year
- 1:42Speaker 1: this time rolls around and I get these messages, just
- 1:46Speaker 1: you know, fun teasing amongst friends.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Your mom was truly a great Easter bunny. She was
- 1:54Speaker 2: she really it is.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yes, she really put a lot of time into it,
- 2:00Speaker 1: a lot of effort, and it was fun. I have
- 2:02Speaker 1: a lot of fond memories of it, and I definitely
- 2:07Speaker 1: I need to contact her. I need to talk to
- 2:09Speaker 1: her because I miss her. I was thinking about this.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I was like, oh, that was so sweet. Yeah. So listeners,
- 2:17Speaker 1: whatever you're celebrating or not celebrating, it's just spring and
- 2:22Speaker 1: not being having allergies, whatever it is. We wish you
- 2:28Speaker 1: all the best, but we would love to hear any
- 2:30Speaker 1: traditions that you have. But in the meantime, please enjoy
- 2:34Speaker 1: this classic episode.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Hey, this is Annie and Samantha.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I'm welcome to stuff I've never told you, but I should.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I hurt you, And welcome to another edition of Happy Hour.
- 2:57Speaker 1: As always with these segments, if you choose to drink
- 3:00Speaker 1: or whatever you're choosing to do, please do so responsibly.
- 3:03Speaker 1: It's just a nice Generally, we don't always succeed, but
- 3:08Speaker 1: it's supposed to be kind of a winding down time
- 3:10Speaker 1: or just a time where you and I can chat. Yeah,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and hopefully you listeners enjoy it. Are you sitting on anything, Smittha.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I am all my bubble water strawberry watermelon, A.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Nice nice I've got a bit of a hot toddy situation.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I had a bit of a late night that I'll
- 3:29Speaker 1: talk about a future episode. And so last night it
- 3:33Speaker 1: slept really hard, and you know that feeling when you
- 3:35Speaker 1: sleep really hard and you actually wake up kind of
- 3:37Speaker 1: like disoriented. Yeah, yeah, so I'm kind of like my
- 3:42Speaker 1: throat was a little I think I was breathing very deeply. Ah,
- 3:46Speaker 1: but it was a very nice sleep, but I was
- 3:49Speaker 1: just kind of this morning a little whoa. But Okay,
- 3:53Speaker 1: as we're recording this, it is tax Day.
- 3:57Speaker 2: It is tax Day, it is tax stay.
- 4:00Speaker 1: But it's also coming up on Easter. So I mean,
- 4:05Speaker 1: Samantha and I have made it clear we're not very
- 4:08Speaker 1: religious currently, but I did grow up in a religious household,
- 4:13Speaker 1: so I just kind of wanted to talk about some
- 4:15Speaker 1: of the things that I my family used to do
- 4:18Speaker 1: for Easter. I did try to look into usually when
- 4:22Speaker 1: we do these holiday based episodes, I can find several
- 4:25Speaker 1: articles about women who are like, why are you making
- 4:27Speaker 1: me get make an Easter basket? So I did look
- 4:31Speaker 1: into that. But Samantha, did you have any do you
- 4:33Speaker 1: have any foods that you associate with Easter or any
- 4:37Speaker 1: memories that you have?
- 4:38Speaker 3: So one thing specific that I would always get growing up.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I was an odd child that did not love chocolate chocolate.
- 4:45Speaker 3: So the one thing I did like, though, was white
- 4:48Speaker 3: chocolate oddly enough, which is super sweet in comparison to
- 4:52Speaker 3: but my so my growing up, I always got white
- 4:56Speaker 3: chocolate Easter bunnies. My mother made sure to have that.
- 5:00Speaker 3: My dad loves dying eggs, so we would do that
- 5:02Speaker 3: even when fighting, so we would have tons of boiled eggs.
- 5:05Speaker 3: We would have tons of boiled eggs. We're not actually
- 5:08Speaker 3: doing that this year. I was told by my family
- 5:11Speaker 3: that they weren't do that because there's no children. But
- 5:13Speaker 3: I'm also wonder roof is the egg crices, which would
- 5:15Speaker 3: make me laugh hysterically. If you know my family, you
- 5:18Speaker 3: know the you know like that. But I don't think
- 5:20Speaker 3: that's it, But I mean maybe I could be, it
- 5:24Speaker 3: could be. But all of that to say is that's
- 5:26Speaker 3: the biggest memory. Also that I would always get a
- 5:28Speaker 3: book and it was usually the old school Nancy Drew.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Or Hardy Boy books that I would get at Easter.
- 5:34Speaker 3: I don't know why I remember that, but I remember
- 5:36Speaker 3: eating bits and I would save it for like months
- 5:39Speaker 3: of my white chocolate Easter Bunny while reading my new book.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So that's something I do remember.
- 5:44Speaker 3: What about you?
- 5:45Speaker 1: That's nice? Food wise? We had We always had ham.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that is an Easter favorite.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Deviled eggs, which I know you don't like, but whold
- 5:55Speaker 1: host of the show Caroline loves them.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Right, favorite she has and she is so Southern and
- 6:01Speaker 3: loves it so much. She has a specialized egg egg dish. Yes, yes,
- 6:06Speaker 3: and my mother did too. My mother has several, the
- 6:08Speaker 3: fancy version and then the tupperware version so you can
- 6:11Speaker 3: travel with it.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Yeah, my mom did have that too. I forgot about that.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Those were the two go tos, and then usually like
- 6:20Speaker 1: peas or asparagus. I've said it before. I was never
- 6:23Speaker 1: a big candy person, so I'd usually get the candy
- 6:26Speaker 1: and trade it for something. But my mom would make
- 6:30Speaker 1: she'd make these cupcakes that had like the green coconut
- 6:33Speaker 1: grass on top and then like the pastel m and
- 6:37Speaker 1: ms as eggs, and I loved those for some reason.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Probably could memory. I just saw edible grass yesterday and
- 6:46Speaker 2: I was like, what is what is this?
- 6:48Speaker 1: Why?
- 6:48Speaker 2: Why is this? Why is this a thing?
- 6:51Speaker 3: Because you know, you have the Easter basket and that
- 6:54Speaker 3: has the grass and all that, and that's exactly what
- 6:56Speaker 3: it looks like.
- 6:57Speaker 2: But apparently it's edible.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I guess maybe you put it on like food stuff
- 7:03Speaker 3: as well, like if you do a specialized cake that
- 7:05Speaker 3: you want to be over the top because it's not
- 7:07Speaker 3: the coconut thing I've seen for years that that is
- 7:10Speaker 3: gin eggs Boomer tradition, but like the edible grass is
- 7:16Speaker 3: new to me, so I'm very I'm like, do they
- 7:19Speaker 3: put this in the basket and tell you to eat
- 7:21Speaker 3: that too?
- 7:21Speaker 1: I have questions.
- 7:24Speaker 3: I have questions, but I will also want to add
- 7:26Speaker 3: my mother used to make like the fancy fancy baskets
- 7:30Speaker 3: for people to have, like care package baskets, so I
- 7:33Speaker 3: have baskets were very pretty.
- 7:36Speaker 1: The baskets can be very pretty. My family only did
- 7:39Speaker 1: that once and then we found them before we were
- 7:42Speaker 1: supposed to find them, and they got mad and so
- 7:44Speaker 1: they never did it again, which is fair. I don't understood.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Take it back. That's what they say about Santa Claus too.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Which, by the way, I never believed in the Easter Bunny.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I believed in Santa Claus for an embarrassing amount of time,
- 7:57Speaker 1: but I've never worked. But anyway, I was a very
- 8:11Speaker 1: competitive egg hunter. That was my favorite thing, and to
- 8:15Speaker 1: the point they put in rules specifically for me where
- 8:19Speaker 1: I couldn't I had to they everyone else got a
- 8:22Speaker 1: head start.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I was gonna say, did you have to sit back?
- 8:24Speaker 2: Like five minutes?
- 8:25Speaker 1: We had like gold eggs and I was only allowed
- 8:27Speaker 1: to find one. It was so frustrating, that's me. There's
- 8:32Speaker 1: a picture where I'm like glaring. I obviously can see it,
- 8:36Speaker 1: and I can't get it. I was so mad. But
- 8:39Speaker 1: that was my favorite part of Easter. I loved it.
- 8:41Speaker 1: But I can only imagine, like how much work that
- 8:43Speaker 1: was for my mom to put all the stuff in
- 8:45Speaker 1: there and then hind the eggs and put that together
- 8:49Speaker 1: for us. Something else I found out is a Southern
- 8:52Speaker 1: tradition which completely makes sense to me when I read
- 8:55Speaker 1: about it. Is the whole Easter dress thing.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I was always Southern. Yeah, I could see that.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Yeah, my family, my grandmother sometimes would take me out
- 9:05Speaker 1: to get an Easter dress. I hated it because I
- 9:08Speaker 1: was so insecure with my body. But I did like
- 9:11Speaker 1: the getting of the dress. But you know, as an adult,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I definitely don't do it. I haven't. She was like
- 9:17Speaker 1: the person that did that for me, no one else.
- 9:19Speaker 1: But I learned it was a Southern thing, like women
- 9:23Speaker 1: in the Easter the past dress.
- 9:27Speaker 3: The families have to match. Like for my sister specifically,
- 9:30Speaker 3: she did that. My parents did too. Don't get me wrong,
- 9:33Speaker 3: because it was Easter Sunday. You go to service, you
- 9:35Speaker 3: have that dress. Everything is in pastels. I remember all
- 9:38Speaker 3: of my past not all of them.
- 9:39Speaker 2: But some of the pastel dresses.
- 9:41Speaker 3: But like, yeah, having that perfect picture on Easter Sunday
- 9:45Speaker 3: with your basket.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I have one. If we still, if we
- 9:51Speaker 1: still posted on social media, I have a picture of
- 9:54Speaker 1: my family that is exactly that. All the kids look
- 10:00Speaker 1: semi miserable and I'm looking at the eggs. I'm already
- 10:05Speaker 1: like where are they? But I did enjoy it, you know.
- 10:08Speaker 1: The sad thing is like during the pandemic, my mom,
- 10:13Speaker 1: that was one of the things we tried to do is.
- 10:15Speaker 1: We tried to get together for Easter because I love
- 10:17Speaker 1: she would still put on the Easter egg hunts for me.
- 10:20Speaker 3: The amount of money you met, you you got all
- 10:22Speaker 3: those Easter egg hunts. I was like, okay, first of all,
- 10:24Speaker 3: we only got candy, but we got more real eggs
- 10:27Speaker 3: than anything else.
- 10:28Speaker 1: We'd rake it in man. But that's why the golden
- 10:32Speaker 1: egg was so it had twenty bucks in it. Yeah. Also,
- 10:36Speaker 1: I remembered that was one of the final death knells
- 10:41Speaker 1: of me and my ex boyfriend, as we were dying
- 10:44Speaker 1: Easter eggs together with my mom and my mom was like,
- 10:46Speaker 1: don't you have a crush on this other guy? And
- 10:47Speaker 1: I was like, mom, and he left her business on
- 10:53Speaker 1: star did he left? He was my ride and he left? Okay, Oh,
- 11:00Speaker 1: he doesn't care.
- 11:02Speaker 2: That relationship was over. V left one of your mom.
- 11:07Speaker 1: It was quite the thing. These days, I don't go
- 11:11Speaker 1: home for Easter anymore, but I do make Usually it's
- 11:15Speaker 1: more of a Spring thing than an Easter thing. But
- 11:16Speaker 1: I make like a spring pasta or something like, something
- 11:20Speaker 1: very bright. So that's what I'm planning on doing this year.
- 11:23Speaker 1: But I do have a lot of fund memories with it,
- 11:27Speaker 1: especially the Easter a hunting that was my favorite, so
- 11:31Speaker 1: I would be really curious listeners. We always love hearing
- 11:33Speaker 1: about other people's traditions or memories, so please write in.
