Transcript
- 0:03All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon.
- 0:07On a Monday is the Iowa Sports Radio Network gears back up for
- 0:12the next 6 hours of Iowa based programming?
- 0:14Trent Condon and myself, Ken Miller, we'll start things off
- 0:17and take you until 2:00. Then off the bench come Sean
- 0:20Roberts and Lucas Strain until 5:00.
- 0:23The final hour, 5 until 6 is overtime Iowa.
- 0:27A little snippet from the first quarter from Miller and Condon
- 0:32and from off the bench, here's what's coming up with Trent
- 0:35tonight. Today we'll talk to Scott
- 0:36Dockerman at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:38He wrote an interesting piece on the Big 10 and their affinities
- 0:42for travelling trophies. So we'll talk to Doc about his
- 0:45latest writings, etcetera with Scott pick his brain on college
- 0:48football related topics. That coming up at the bottom of
- 0:51our number one, Matt Snyder kicks off the second hour.
- 0:55He covers Major League Baseball, CBSSports.com.
- 0:58Looking forward to that segment as I do each and every Monday as
- 1:01the teams have reached the All Star break and we head into the
- 1:04doldrums of really not a lot going on other than the All Star
- 1:08game tomorrow, Home Run Derby tonight.
- 1:10There's a couple in WNBA games, but that aside.
- 1:13So we'll talk to Matt Snyder and then Bill Seals will recap what
- 1:18he saw in Frisco and preview what he thinks you'll hear
- 1:21tomorrow as TJ Utzelberger and the Iowa State men's basketball
- 1:26program have scheduled a media availability tomorrow that comes
- 1:30up. But we'll talk to a bill prior
- 1:32to that. Get Trent's plays of the day.
- 1:33I'm guessing they'll be a Home Run Derby contestant or two.
- 1:37That'll be part of it. And I'm not sure if there's any
- 1:40WNBA tonight or not. I don't think there is no there
- 1:43is tomorrow, but none the less good to see.
- 1:46How are you? How was your weekend?
- 1:48It was a busy one, a lot of softball, but the season comes
- 1:51to an end. 7th in the country, At least the teams that entered
- 1:55the tournament this weekend, so it was pretty good.
- 1:57It was wrapped it up yesterday, fell to a team in on the
- 2:02backside of the bracket, the bracket of opportunity as I
- 2:05taught the girls. About Did you get banished to
- 2:07the bracket of opportunity right off the bat?
- 2:09We won a game, then dropped one, then bounced back and won one on
- 2:13the backside of the bracket before we made it to Sunday and
- 2:15that was a realistic goal. Was the goal.
- 2:18Yes, we made it to Sunday, but the season is over and a lot of
- 2:22tears from the team and they had old ball coach starting to well
- 2:26up a little bit there. So I had to turn it over to one
- 2:29of my great assistant coaches that was handed out some some
- 2:31photo albums afterwards because well seen your daughter cry with
- 2:35all of her friends, the girls that she's got to know so well.
- 2:39That was a tough one for coach. So welled up a little bit and a
- 2:43great season. Really, really fun and so, so
- 2:46happy that I did it for a second here.
- 2:48You know, I told you at the beginning, people know who we
- 2:51are. It's not arrogance, it's just
- 2:53reality and I don't want to be the guy, you know, maybe having
- 2:57a conversation with the umpire. I just didn't want to do it and
- 3:01kind of got pulled into it. Year #1 tough year, lot of girls
- 3:04just learning the game. So happy I decided to do it for
- 3:07year #2 it was incredibly rewarding.
- 3:09The families were incredible, a great group of families on top
- 3:12of it, and that's not always the case as I learned.
- 3:14You're lucky and just an incredible season.
- 3:17So I'm hanging it up as a head coach, going now back to the
- 3:20assistant role going. Forward.
- 3:22Good for you. Well, we need more coaches,
- 3:24kids. It's like youth programs in all
- 3:26sports. And certainly we need more
- 3:27umpires and officials, etc. Both are very difficult to come
- 3:31by. Well, it's funny mentioned
- 3:32crying because I didn't my night crying last night.
- 3:34A phenomenal, A phenomenal. I really did.
- 3:37I watched. I turned on Southpaw because
- 3:39there's nothing on nothing. I'd watched a couple of edition
- 3:43of episodes rather of quarterback the new series.
- 3:46It's good, it's good. I watched episode 1.
- 3:48Did you? You talked me into it and now
- 3:50I'm mad at myself that I didn't watch though Southpaw because
- 3:53holy mackerel, I've heard a ton about it.
- 3:55It's. Phenomenal.
- 3:56The story, everything that goes along with it.
- 4:00So yes, that's that is definitely this week is going to
- 4:02be on the docket for. Me is impact on children who are
- 4:06born with the similar handicap to him.
- 4:08Yeah, and for people who don't know Jim Abbott.
- 4:10It's we should say this right, People don't not necessarily
- 4:13know. Exactly.
- 4:14Yeah, his his no hitter was in the 90s and we're in 2025,
- 4:20Kenneth, so get with it. But, yeah, I was born with one
- 4:24hand and learned, taught himself to play baseball, you know, with
- 4:28a glove and it became a pitcher and a really good pitcher,
- 4:32college scholarships, etcetera. And and his transformation from,
- 4:37you know, it was OK for him to be talked about.
- 4:39The notoriety that came with it as he moved up the ladder to it
- 4:43really being a burden on him that he was still continued to
- 4:48be referred to the pitcher with one hand.
- 4:50And he wanted to outgrow that. And it took being ripped by a
- 4:54guy by the great writer Jack Curry from The New York Times
- 4:57who covered baseball for decades, who called him an
- 5:00underachiever. And that struck A chord with Jim
- 5:04Abbott. But, but Jack Curry was not
- 5:06saying you're an underachiever in life.
- 5:09You're an underachiever on the on the mound.
- 5:13And you've been all of your life been been seeking that
- 5:16affirmation of, yes, we see you as a baseball player and a
- 5:20pitcher. And it dawned on him later that
- 5:23night that he'd finally arrived at that point.
- 5:25And he got a hold of Jack Curry right away.
- 5:27But it's, it's that that's not the, you know, what sent me over
- 5:30the edge. It was the impact the children
- 5:33who were born with one hand that Jim Abbott had on them.
- 5:38It's phenomenal. It really, really was.
- 5:40I'm so glad I watched it. I mean, there's nothing else,
- 5:44but I, I, I wasn't searching or seeking for anything else
- 5:48because. And if you haven't watched it,
- 5:49I'm sure it's if you got ESPN plus, it's available at any
- 5:52time. And this week with nothing on,
- 5:55I'm guessing ESPN will find a way on their multitude of
- 5:58platforms to wear it again. But I'm glad I watched.
- 6:02It's a really good show. Anyways, if you get a chance, I
- 6:04think you'll, you'll, you, the listening audience will be glad
- 6:08you did, because what a story. Speaking of that, Speaking of
- 6:13what watch last night with no baseball on, I introduced my
- 6:16kids for the first time to The Sandlot.
- 6:19Now I'm sure for you I didn't see it Movie came out in 93, my
- 6:24youth, my wife's youth about baseball, about kids, about a
- 6:28big dog. I mean just and really hit a
- 6:31chord with them the. Chubby fat, The red curly red
- 6:34hair. Yes.
- 6:35What's his name? Well, Ham is his name in the
- 6:38movie. What's his real name in real
- 6:39life? OK, he'll always be Ham.
- 6:41Yeah, yeah, he'll be that guy. Squints is the kid with the
- 6:43glasses. It's I think it's something that
- 6:46you would even still get a kick off.
- 6:48I mean, it's nostalgia. It's about these kids growing up
- 6:50in the 60s. OK, Yeah, yeah, it's a little
- 6:53something there. So I think even today, if you're
- 6:56looking for something, flip that on Disney Plus is where where it
- 6:59was because it was on after America's Funniest Home videos.
- 7:02The kids always get a kick out of that one last night at 8:00
- 7:05for a long time. Well, then we started watching
- 7:07and went to commercial like, hey, let's just flip it on
- 7:10Disney Plus, watch it that way. I'd do it without the
- 7:12commercials. But yeah, the kids enjoyed that
- 7:14one. So that's where we are now.
- 7:16Right as we're counting down to football.
- 7:18It is finding every different avenue.
- 7:20I know. I'm going to guess you didn't
- 7:21watch a serve of Wimbledon. No, not one.
- 7:24I just don't. It's still, of all the sports,
- 7:27that's the one that always baffles me.
- 7:28You love competition. I do.
- 7:31And I love individual pursuits normally, and this is.
- 7:34And how that just has never grabbed you.
- 7:36Well, it did in the 70s when it was Connor and and Borg and you
- 7:41know, Martina and Steffi and Chrissy and I mean all one
- 7:46names, right? Bjorn.
- 7:48And I mean, back back in those times, back in, in that era, I
- 7:55did watch it, but I just, I don't know, the players don't
- 7:58love the players. Well, we might be getting it now
- 8:00with Alcaraz and Sinner how they have separated themselves.
- 8:02Joker is. In the end, yeah, yeah.
- 8:05He's come to the backside, he's still incredibly good, but he's
- 8:07not at those two guys level is maybe we're setting up with
- 8:10something like that. You know, for me initially it
- 8:12was Yvonne Lendl. Of course.
- 8:14Sure, yeah. You know, that run in the late
- 8:1680s was the one kind of, I was starting to form and watching.
- 8:20Well, there's only sports on during summertime, right?
- 8:22Is Wimbledon during these couple of weeks or?
- 8:24Respecter ran into legal trouble.
- 8:27Really. I don't even.
- 8:28Remember, I think it was, it was back in Germany where he's from.
- 8:31It might have been he didn't pay his taxes, OK, But I think he
- 8:33served jail time anyways. Yeah, I think he did.
- 8:36And Avant Landel, who was kind of that crafty lefty and and
- 8:39that and then of course, the the women's game and how that
- 8:41continued to explode. So yeah, I've always enjoyed.
- 8:43I've never. Been zealous since you got
- 8:45knifed in the back, right? In Germany, wasn't it?
- 8:47It might have been Gunt or something.
- 8:50Was the guy's name. Yes, that.
- 8:53Crazy what you remember. It is what sticks with you, but
- 8:56tennis has never been certainly at the forefront for me.
- 8:58But it's something I always enjoy and when we get to
- 9:01September and the US Opens going on, there'll be some pisses me
- 9:04off and they'll be bad about. Covering up football.
- 9:07Right, it usually doesn't. They usually try to keep that
- 9:10away. Did they build a new stadium or
- 9:13did they still get the the planes from LaGuardia going?
- 9:16I think they yeah, it's still there.
- 9:18It's still, it's close, but I don't know if they just expanded
- 9:21or what it is, but sure, yeah, late night tennis.
- 9:24Yeah, I'm out. I'm out.
- 9:26I'm out. What?
- 9:27What baseball caught your attention this weekend?
- 9:29Any of. It yeah, my twins trying to get
- 9:31back to 500 and fell to 1 yesterday to make that happen.
- 9:34Buxton had a cycle job. So this was the game me and my
- 9:37buddies were initially planning on going to.
- 9:40Yeah. And then Nationals were this
- 9:42week. So I wasn't able to make it.
- 9:43So I was getting a lot of crap for my buddies that we were not
- 9:46there watching Byron Buxton hip for a triple hip for the cycle
- 9:50in that one. So a lot of that, that's kind of
- 9:53where my viewing was. Watch a little bit of Cubs,
- 9:55Yankees. Good series.
- 9:57Cubs got blown out on Friday, took the next two.
- 10:00Got to be happy with that. Yeah, Matthew Boyd was fantastic
- 10:02on Saturday and another well pitched game yesterday.
- 10:06So as we look at and we take another snapshot here, the Cubs
- 10:10are right there to have the best record in the league.
- 10:14They have the second best record in the league.
- 10:16They do. You know who has the third best
- 10:18record in the league? The Brewers.
- 10:20The Brewers. So we got this dichotomy.
- 10:23Object in your rearview mirror may be closer than it seems.
- 10:26You got this Cubs team that has on the periphery in a year that
- 10:31maybe it's more open than some years.
- 10:33With the Dodgers not seemingly being the jugger, they're still
- 10:3719 games above 5 foot, right? And then we think that they're.
- 10:40Yeah, yeah. And they haven't peaked right.
- 10:42They haven't hit their apex yet and that's what the Dodger yet.
- 10:45Well, you lose six games in a row, you start wondering.
- 10:47Or no, it was 7. In a year like that.
- 10:50But then you go the other way and here's the Brewers not on
- 10:54your heels. I mean, the difference between
- 10:56being the one seed, have a home field through the NL and having
- 11:00to host in the wild card round and the extra tax that that's
- 11:03going to be on you 2, maybe 3 games that you're going to have
- 11:06to do just to get to the divisional series.
- 11:08And then how compact it is and you're going to need 4 starters
- 11:12on and on and on. It just this is going to be an
- 11:15incredible race down the stretch in a couple of different ways,
- 11:18not just the division chasing the best record.
- 11:20Is that a realistic possibility? What do you do?
- 11:22There's still holes on this team.
- 11:24This is. My third base, there's a real
- 11:27There's a glaring hole for the Cubs.
- 11:28Let's see here for six weeks. Capy didn't want to.
- 11:31Believe in no, and I didn't either because I like Matt
- 11:33Shaw's I like, but he can't hit a lick.
- 11:34Can't. No.
- 11:36Not now, No. Will he develop into a decent
- 11:39hitter? Probably.
- 11:40But he's not there now, and the window is now.
- 11:43Absolutely is. Go spend.
- 11:45Yeah, go spend. Easy to say.
- 11:47Well, in case he's going to be out the door, he seems like he's
- 11:49the guy that I mean, he tore it up in the prospect game this
- 11:52weekend every time. I mean, there's seldom a game
- 11:55goes by. They're just not doing something
- 11:57with the bat in his hand. I didn't realize he's a Canadian
- 11:59kid too. So he moves up another notch in
- 12:01my book. But yeah, that the Cubs there.
- 12:04I totally agree with you. The window is absolutely right
- 12:07now. What are you going to do?
- 12:08And the wild card races in both leagues are going to be off the
- 12:11charts strength. The depth that you have on both
- 12:14sides, teams that haven't been there like the Angels, the
- 12:17Angels on, isn't this the time A-Team like that?
- 12:20If they do hang around for the next two weeks, we get to July
- 12:2331st, you got to do something. I would think they're six games
- 12:27out of the best wild card. They're four games out of being
- 12:30a wild card. So they're, I mean, they've got
- 12:33a bunch of teams. But normally I look at it at
- 12:35this point, I don't know if it's right or if it's wrong or if I
- 12:38just made this number up in my head or if it actually means
- 12:40some. You got to be within 5.
- 12:42OK. That's how I look at it at this
- 12:44point. So we got six teams that are
- 12:45there. The Orioles are out.
- 12:47Orioles, A's and White Sox at The American.
- 12:48League, yeah, I think that's fair, right?
- 12:49I mean, none of those teams are getting anywhere close to.
- 12:51It I think you can cross out the Guardians.
- 12:53I do too, because what little pieces they have, maybe outside
- 12:57of Ramirez they need to trade and maybe it's time for a reset
- 13:00after they've been able to keep it together lately.
- 13:02Seems like the Royals are out of.
- 13:04It yes. Nice win yesterday, although
- 13:06they coughed up the lead but won it an extras.
- 13:10I I think they're out of it. We know Tampa is not going to
- 13:12spend. They might make some moves, but
- 13:15they're going to be. They had a tough weekend against
- 13:17the the surging Boston Red Sox. How about that?
- 13:19Who now are the second? Well, because.
- 13:21Wow, they've won ten straight games.
- 13:23And they are just a game back and tied in the win column with
- 13:26the Yankees. How crazy is that to that?
- 13:29Good? So the Rays aren't going to
- 13:31spend the Rangers the way that you wonder if the Rangers have
- 13:34the financial flexibility to do without knowing anything off the
- 13:38top of my head above their kind of ownership group of what
- 13:40they're planning to spend. But they've got a huge payroll.
- 13:43They're still under 500. Is that a team that's going to
- 13:46say, let's just add some more to it and maybe have to pay the
- 13:49luxury tax or whatever it turns out to be?
- 13:50No. I think they, I think they stand
- 13:52pat, if not, if anything. We obviously have talked about
- 13:54the twins. I would be shocked if they do
- 13:56anything financially to help this team.
- 14:00There's a lot of sellers and there are a lot of teams that
- 14:02are. That's where I go back to the
- 14:03Angels, depending on where it is.
- 14:05But if you were within 2, three games of a wild card spot at
- 14:08that point and you look around at your neighbors in the
- 14:10American League wild card race and not a lot of people are
- 14:13going to be spending, maybe this is a time you push it together.
- 14:16But Speaking of the Angels, seeing Reggie Willetts kid get
- 14:19drafted #1I. Did.
- 14:20So I see the name. I'm like, why is that name?
- 14:23How? Where have I seen that name
- 14:24before? Oh, Reggie Willetts, man, I'm
- 14:26old. Hopefully he's a better ball
- 14:28player than his dad though. It's yeah.
- 14:31And I guess that was a shock. I don't know, but apparently.
- 14:33Nobody no more. He's going to sign under slot.
- 14:36Under because the slot's 8 million.
- 14:38And 11 guaranteed. Is it 11?
- 14:40Yeah, and he's probably going to be more than that.
- 14:41Eight. Wow.
- 14:42So they'll be able to save for their second, third, fourth
- 14:44round picks and be able to spend that way.
- 14:46So maybe that's that. They have a wink and a nod that
- 14:48that was going to be the deal with him since we're talking
- 14:50baseball and we are a lot being made about the Mizuroski thing.
- 14:56You know what, Trent? Sadly, when I look at this event
- 14:59that meant there there was, I mean, there, there was when I
- 15:02was a kid, Major League Baseball ulcer game.
- 15:04Was it other than hockey? It was it because you see your
- 15:08guys and and you and baseball wasn't on TV every night, right?
- 15:12In fact, it was on once a week maybe where I grew up, this was
- 15:18it. But you know what?
- 15:19Unfortunately, when I look at this game now, what it's
- 15:22becoming the Pro Bowl. It's the Pro Bowl.
- 15:25It's not that bad. It's not that bad, but it's
- 15:27trending in that direction. All the opt outs and I get
- 15:31there's a lot of pitchers, but I'm seeing more opt outs of the
- 15:34end of the Major League Baseball All Star game than ever before.
- 15:37And you know, one of the things that I think has a big is a big
- 15:39factor in it. Back in the day, these guys had
- 15:44to go, this was $25,000, right? Right.
- 15:48They're making 75 grand for the year before they go do the job
- 15:52in the offseason. This was a massive windfall for
- 15:55them to be selected to be a part of this thing.
- 15:58It's not anymore. Sure, some guys have it in the
- 15:59clause in their contract. They're, you know, they're
- 16:02making 50 million a year plus if they make the All Star game,
- 16:05there's an extra 50,000. Come on, that's a drop in a
- 16:08bucket to these guys, but it's starting to take on some of
- 16:12those tendencies that it's not the prestige.
- 16:16This is how I see it that it once was because of the fact
- 16:20that these guys are willing are almost some of them searching
- 16:23for a reason not to be a part of it.
- 16:25Another big piece of it is interleague play, because at
- 16:29that time that was the. Only was the World Series of
- 16:32this. These were the times that we got
- 16:34to see all the stars go up against each other.
- 16:36You got to see Roger Clemens go up against Barry Bonds.
- 16:40You didn't get to see that during the regular season.
- 16:42You got now we get to see it for a single week.
- 16:44We have those every night. Every night we have those
- 16:47matchups and because of that, I think that's also taken a part
- 16:51of the shine. Away, no question is the Inner
- 16:53League play, which I love. Don't get me wrong, I like Italy
- 16:56play. I do too.
- 16:57And I enjoy that we get to see, and now that they've set it up
- 17:00in a way where you get to see every team every year, I don't
- 17:03have a problem with, nor do I like a lot of people do.
- 17:05Going from 18 down to 15 games with your division visual, mate,
- 17:08that's fine. Yeah, that's OK.
- 17:10You know, moving that down from that 18 number, that was too
- 17:12much. Yeah, 18 was too many.
- 17:14Times it was that was that was over saturation.
- 17:17I agree. Yeah, for every Cubs Cardinals
- 17:19that you get 18 times, you also get Pirates rats, you know, 18
- 17:23times throughout the course of the year.
- 17:25That was too much of that part. Of it.
- 17:27So Mizeroski, he's made 5 starts skiing, started the game last
- 17:31year he did after making eleven starts.
- 17:34I mean, I get if you're, if one of your you feel like one of
- 17:38your teammates got snubbed, I'll tell you this, I meant to do
- 17:40this. I wonder if the Phillies and the
- 17:42Brewers play again this year because that'll be appointment
- 17:45TV after some of the crap that the Phillies were chatting about
- 17:48their guy Miss Ross, like Miss Roski's a star baseball, got
- 17:52criticized for not doing enough to promote their young stars.
- 17:56Remember the Mike Trout blowback?
- 17:58Oh yes, you know what you got a bona fide superstar Major League
- 18:01Baseball. Take advantage of this promote.
- 18:04Well, here's one that fell into your lap and you put him in the
- 18:07All Star and this is the blowback you're getting.
- 18:09It's big deal. He's going to pitch 1 inning.
- 18:12If that, if that, if that. Right, yeah, I'm, I'm guess I'm
- 18:16anxious to see how Dave Roberts uses him tomorrow.
- 18:18Absolutely. Maybe he doesn't.
- 18:20I would not be surprised maybe. He's a hard ass that he didn't
- 18:22know when well he just didn't get around to getting him in.
- 18:24Happens to one player. One pitcher every year doesn't
- 18:27get in the game. This year, it happens to be.
- 18:29Him and being the latest ad isn't probably that the way it
- 18:31probably should be anyway. I don't.
- 18:33Well, and not only that, if you're the Brewers, look, you
- 18:36got an innings limit on this guy.
- 18:38You got a pitch limit on this guy this season.
- 18:40Go have fun. Let's just save that arm, even
- 18:44for an inning. How?
- 18:44Will the players treat him? I think fine.
- 18:47They won't shun him. I don't think so.
- 18:49Now there might be some Phillies guys.
- 18:52I hope there's another pull out though and Sanchez just gets in.
- 18:55Can we get one more guy today that says well?
- 18:57Didn't the Phil, I mean, I got to give the Phillies credit.
- 18:59Yeah, they they wrote him his check.
- 19:01They wrote him that bonus for being named to the All Star team
- 19:03when he wasn't. And well done, Philly.
- 19:05How many times have we seen late in the season you know you need
- 19:07525 at basketball? You're at 520.
- 19:11Yeah, Take the day off. And Eddie Moore, that's not as
- 19:14big of a deal, but some of the young guys and and you see those
- 19:16kind of things like, come on, what are you doing here?
- 19:19And to see it go the other way. And the Phillies?
- 19:21Do the thing. I thought that was a pretty
- 19:23classy gesture. That's a good way to get a
- 19:24little camaraderie with your front office and your ownership
- 19:27group and your players, too. No, I'm anxious to see it.
- 19:29So tonight we've got the Home Run Derby.
- 19:32Are you going to go out of your way to watch it?
- 19:37Well, I got baseball tonight. Oh, so there you go, there's
- 19:39your answer. The answer is either.
- 19:40You can watch it on your phone. Or Yep, I'll probably have it on
- 19:43and if Buxton, you know, if Buxton isn't fancing, that will
- 19:46change. Does that, does that mean more
- 19:47to you because one of your twins?
- 19:48Yeah. Does it still that that
- 19:50definitely ratchet? And that's not just any player.
- 19:53You know, it's not like the year that Ron Coomer was the Twins
- 19:55home star. It's Byron Buxton and watching
- 19:58the trials and tribulations of this guy, knowing his story,
- 20:01knowing he's a Georgia kid, get to play an All Star game back
- 20:04home, get to do the Home Run Derby and just watching this guy
- 20:07and how talented he is. And yet can't stay on the field.
- 20:11The injuries and now he's finally having that healthy
- 20:14season and annoying the year. I think it was the year 2 years
- 20:17ago where he didn't play. I don't think it was an ending
- 20:19of the outfield. He played, I don't know, 80
- 20:22games because that's about what he plays.
- 20:24But he could only DHI mean that guy with all the physical gifts
- 20:28and he couldn't physically play the outfield yet.
- 20:31He was still out there as much as he could swing in the bat.
- 20:34That kind of guy. Those are guys that are easy to
- 20:37root for. So yeah, that one makes this one
- 20:39a little bit more special. And I hope, look, I'm going to
- 20:42throw a bet on him because he's my guy, right?
- 20:44I'm going to throw 10 bucks down to say let's see if boxing can
- 20:47win this thing at 9:00 to 1:00. But more than anything, he is an
- 20:50easy guy to root for. A very likable person that has
- 20:53had hell on the baseball field throughout his.
- 20:55Career. What's what's his price?
- 20:579 to one, nine to one. Yeah, I mean, I'm going to, I
- 21:01guess I'll bet somebody. Give it a shot, right?
- 21:04Well, I bet the Oscar Fernandez last year worked.
- 21:06Out. Yes, it did.
- 21:07Right, I cashed on him and had a ticket to the T Wolves to win it
- 21:10all and that carried me through the NBA season.
- 21:13Didn't cash it, but got a cheap thrill and like it was a huge
- 21:16price. Anyways, we'll take a time out.
- 21:19Scott Dockerman is going to join us next.
- 21:23Doc will join us on the on the on the Big 10, college football,
- 21:27etcetera, etcetera. SEC media days are going on as
- 21:31we speak. Since I I went down this path
- 21:34for a second. Did you see the report?
- 21:36Greg McElroy, former Alabama quarterback, I don't know what
- 21:39he's doing now. What he's he's with somebody.
- 21:42Is he with ESPN? He has been for a long time.
- 21:44OK, so he's probably still there.
- 21:46He says. And this is kind of I'm, I'm
- 21:48paraphrasing, but I'm kind of on the right path.
- 21:51I wouldn't put this out there if I didn't believe this source
- 21:53type of thing, He says Nick Samus is going to coach again.
- 21:56Whoa. That's kind of what I thought.
- 22:00Person in the know believes Nick Saban has returned to coaching.
- 22:03There it is. I'm clicking on.
- 22:05Did you find it now? Yeah.
- 22:07Are there any schools mentioned? No, this is, let's see, he was
- 22:11on in Birmingham on a radio show down there and said this is the
- 22:15quote from McElroy, a very much in the know person that I have a
- 22:19lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around and
- 22:23really, really admire. They seem to think Nick Saban
- 22:25has not done coaching. He's pretty adamant that he
- 22:28thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again, UN quote.
- 22:31Paul Finebaum. Finebaum knows Saban well.
- 22:34And McIlroy? Well, Brian Kelly out.
- 22:40Back to LSU, what do you? Do that.
- 22:43What do you? If he is going to coach, isn't
- 22:45that isn't isn't that the conference he's going to coach
- 22:47in? I would think so, right?
- 22:49Yes, he's. Not coming back to the Big 10.
- 22:51No, he's not going back to West Virginia.
- 22:53Right. Yeah.
- 22:54Where he's from, yeah. He's not going to go to Michigan
- 22:56State, though. Didn't he start in the Mac?
- 23:02I think he did anyways. Yeah, he's not going there.
- 23:05No, no. The SEC or it So where else in
- 23:10the SEC? If it's not one of the two
- 23:14places that he's coached Florida, he's not going to.
- 23:17Auburn. No.
- 23:18You can't go to Auburn if you're the former Alabama coach.
- 23:21No. No, no, no.
- 23:22No, a boy with that ratchet. Thing Oh, it'd be unbelievable.
- 23:25Doc might have to come up with a new list and put the iron bullet
- 23:27#1. Well, we'll talk to him next.
- 23:30Scott Dockerman joins before we go to break, though we continue
- 23:33on with the bonus bucks. There's at least I think there's
- 23:36this week and next. We may be done with this.
- 23:39It'll come back again, but at least for this goal, go around
- 23:42right now, head to KX and o.com. This nationwide contest is
- 23:46available, well, nationwide. And here's the keyword this
- 23:48hour. It's green.green@kx&o.com.
- 23:51Your chance to win $1000 green@kx&o.com. 1225.
- 23:57Miller and Condon underway on a Monday, it's the Iowa Sports
- 24:01Radio Network. I'm Miller and Condon.
- 24:11Welcome back just past 12:30 on a Monday.
- 24:16Miller and Condon, we are with you until well, until 2:00.
- 24:20Turn things over the drive at that point.
- 24:22Let's get our friend Scott Dockerman in here.
- 24:24He writes for The Athletic and he joins us to talk about his
- 24:28latest piece, what he's got coming on up this week and what
- 24:32time he gets to Vegas next week for Big 10 Football Media Days.
- 24:36Hello, Scott Dockerman, Trenton Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 24:38How are you Doc? Not bad, you know, trying to
- 24:42take a couple days off here before the big storm comes, so
- 24:47just doing some odd jobs around the house and what have you.
- 24:51When do you go to Vegas? I'm going.
- 24:54Next Monday like early afternoon, like right around
- 24:59noon and and I'll get out there mid afternoon Vegas time.
- 25:03Stay in there. It's all the way till Friday.
- 25:05Staying for the whole thing, well that's good.
- 25:07Hope your plans allow you to join Trent tonight.
- 25:09On Tuesday night at Circa. We're throwing a little shindig
- 25:12for some of our guests that we have all season long.
- 25:15So hopefully you can make that work.
- 25:17We'll send you some Intel on that.
- 25:19But Doc, I want to start with, you know, your latest piece on
- 25:22the on the Big 10 and their affinity for all of these
- 25:25trophies. It was really well done.
- 25:27And man, there is a lot of them. And I love the fact that, you
- 25:30know, just the history, what behind them, how they started,
- 25:33what it was originally was and what it transformed into.
- 25:36I thought it was very informative as we scratched that
- 25:40college football. Yeah, it's, it's really
- 25:44interesting when you get into the the rivalries, they're
- 25:48either their nicknames or the trophies of the Big 10 is, is
- 25:52obviously, you know, kind of trophy central.
- 25:55It's it's kind of the backbone of the conference and all of the
- 25:58rivalries within it. And you know what, what to me is
- 26:02most fascinating is the University of Minnesota has, has
- 26:05cornered the market on, in my opinion, 3, the three best
- 26:09trophies. I, I mean, argue with anybody
- 26:12that Floyd is number 1. I think the way it was set up
- 26:15and why it was set up, I think and, and the fact that it's
- 26:18endured now, you know, going into its 90th year is, is really
- 26:22beyond words. And then, you know, the jug is
- 26:25the oldest one and it's got, you know, it's got a great back
- 26:28story. I mean, you know, Michigan came
- 26:30in 19 O3 had this big oversized jug, asked for it back and
- 26:34Minnesota said, well, you're going to have to win it back.
- 26:37And that's what started it all. And then, and I think the, you
- 26:40know, the most iconic and, you know, to watch happen is the axe
- 26:45and to see them chop down the goal posts.
- 26:46So, and then there's so many other ones.
- 26:49And then there's the ones to me that are probably a bit, you
- 26:53know, that they were made in a, you know, marketing room between
- 26:56a couple of people that need to get out of the way.
- 26:59I mean, come on, Freedom Trophy between Wisconsin and Nebraska.
- 27:02What would they do? Flip a coin?
- 27:03Let's call it either liberty or freedom.
- 27:06Freedom won. So let's pick that name.
- 27:08You know, that's kind of ridiculous if you ask me.
- 27:10Does the Heroes Trophy fit the bill?
- 27:15I love the concept of the heroes trophy.
- 27:18I mean, the fact that both states that it shows the
- 27:21humanity that, you know, they're going to honor a citizen hero
- 27:25from each one and that that's wonderful.
- 27:29And we've seen some great ones. I mean, I don't think you'll get
- 27:31any better than Dan Marburger last year, you know, from Perry
- 27:35High School. That was yeah, you know, and
- 27:37they, they, they named him six months in advance.
- 27:40So. But, you know, the trophy itself
- 27:42is just kind of a symbol of victory.
- 27:44And, you know, even the Heartland Trophy, which is
- 27:48relatively new, I mean, it's 21 years old.
- 27:50It, you know, it's kind of cool. It's, but it's doesn't have the
- 27:54history or the tradition that like Floyd does, you know, it's
- 27:56just kind of a again, a symbol of victory.
- 27:59But but then, you know, and then Cyhawk is, as we know, has gone
- 28:02through so many different renditions.
- 28:05And so I, I don't know, I, I, I kind of dig the trophy.
- 28:09You know, Big 10 history and college football history as well
- 28:11as anybody. Obviously all the story we
- 28:14talked about last week with all the rivalries, Ohio State,
- 28:17Michigan doesn't have a trophy. Was there ever talk about it?
- 28:21Was there ever anything, you know, back in the 40s, fifties,
- 28:2460s, where hey, let's put a trophy with this one?
- 28:27Or is it just and we play for conference championships, that's
- 28:29all that matters. Yeah, they, they never really
- 28:32got to that point. And it's kind of funny, as you
- 28:36said, you know, Michigan's really kind of avoided having,
- 28:38you know, whether it's a live mascot as well.
- 28:41I don't know. They Michigan kind of sometimes
- 28:43thinks it's bigger than what it is, But but no, they never
- 28:47really got around to it. And I think they took pride in
- 28:49the fact that it never needed one, especially once they got
- 28:52into that, that 10 year war from 68 to 78 and or, you know, 69 to
- 28:5770. And I guess between Woody and Bo
- 28:58and and just kind of what it the rivalry represents, it's like,
- 29:02well, we're too big. They need a trophy.
- 29:04And you know, it's like, OK, you are no question.
- 29:06But you know, if if, if so, you know that.
- 29:10But they got little trinkets associated with it.
- 29:12I mean Michigan, I mean Ohio State players, if they beat
- 29:14Michigan, get the gold pants. And so there, there are other
- 29:17little things and, and of course, just the, the rivalry
- 29:21itself is, is to me the greatest rivalry in American sports.
- 29:25The Oaken Bucket Dock and and to be fair, the final week of the
- 29:29regular season. For the longest time, I'm not
- 29:32watching Indiana and Purdue, and I'm guessing I speak for most of
- 29:35college football because there's so many other big games, right.
- 29:38I didn't realize that the trophies allegedly 180 years
- 29:43old. The bucket, the original bucket
- 29:45is that old. Seriously.
- 29:47Yeah, they in 1925, there was like a a meeting of the alumni
- 29:52clubs in Chicago in between Indiana and Purdue.
- 29:56And they wanted to find something to play for every
- 29:58year. And they figured, what is the
- 30:00one thing that symbolizes Indiana?
- 30:03And they figured, you know, or what makes a Hoosier.
- 30:05And this is beyond just the nickname of the Indiana school.
- 30:09And they figured that the, you know, a bucket symbolized
- 30:14Indiana from a well. So they went on the kind of
- 30:18looking around for it and they found one in southern Indiana at
- 30:22this place that they that they believe that it was made in the
- 30:261840s out there was like a wooden, giant wooden bucket.
- 30:30And then I've had to, you know, they had to really clean it up.
- 30:33It was really in bad shape and, and reinforce it And, and now,
- 30:37you know, you, they attach those little symbols to them, you
- 30:40know, either AP or an I. So it is, it is really, you
- 30:44know, very unusual but altogether really important.
- 30:47But yeah, you're right. People don't usually watch it,
- 30:50although this year they might because it'll be on NBC and
- 30:52prime time. Right.
- 30:54There was a line in your story that mentioned Iowa, Purdue
- 30:58potentially. It never came to fruition,
- 31:00playing for a trophy. Can you take us inside that?
- 31:03Yeah, About the same time, Iowa and Nebraska set up the Heroes
- 31:06Trophy, and that was the first year of legends and leaders.
- 31:10Purdue approached Iowa to ask if they would if Iowa would be
- 31:14interested in playing for a travelling trophy.
- 31:16And at that point, Iowa looked kind of and said, well, you
- 31:20know, we've already have three. We're adding this fourth with
- 31:23Nebraska. We just think that's probably a
- 31:26bit too much for us. And and you know, Purdue said,
- 31:29OK, that's fine. And you know, but yeah, I would
- 31:32could have, who knows what it would have been.
- 31:34And, and I know there's been some discussion over the years
- 31:37with Illinois as well, because 1952 when they had the apple
- 31:41throwing incident at at then Iowa Stadium that caused him to
- 31:44take a 15 year hiatus, it was so vicious.
- 31:48They said, well, maybe we should have, like, an Apple Cup, but
- 31:50they didn't want it to make it look like Washington, Washington
- 31:52state. And I always said they just need
- 31:55a giant orange cone, you know, to symbolize all the rubber
- 31:58trucks. Yeah.
- 32:01You know Doc I, I love when I learn things.
- 32:02So I had never heard this story before.
- 32:04So so help me out with the with the 15 year hiatus and what
- 32:08happened to cause it. I've never heard of this.
- 32:11Yeah, Illinois was really good that year in 1952.
- 32:15And F Forrest Navashefsky was kind of pulling a Fran McCaffrey
- 32:19on the sideline after a past interference call or something.
- 32:23It was really arguing hard and fans were booing.
- 32:26And all of a sudden, you know, like the the band had like,
- 32:28apples. And some of the fans brought in
- 32:31their lunches and stuff and they started throwing apples at the
- 32:35field, at the officials, at Illinois.
- 32:37And then afterwards they rushed the field and they started going
- 32:40after some Illinois players. Well, and I did a pick funk
- 32:44story about this when I was at The Gazette and there was one
- 32:47guy who grabbed Rocky Ryan in Illinois tight end and he was,
- 32:51he was pretty big. He played in the NFL for a while
- 32:53and grabbed him by the shoulder pads and Rocky turned around and
- 32:56punched him in the jaw and broke his jaw.
- 32:58Good for him. And yeah, and and so, but you
- 33:02know, and the guy's a side note, that guy, I talked to his
- 33:05sister. He didn't paid past by then.
- 33:08But anyway, he had to eat his Thanksgiving through a straw and
- 33:12and he ended up becoming a Lieutenant Colonel in the
- 33:15airport, Dr. medical doctor. So it changed the punch that
- 33:18changed his life. But you know, Illinois and Iowa
- 33:22already had some heated feuds. They they were scheduled to kind
- 33:25of cycle off because back then it wasn't the league that
- 33:28scheduled them. It was the teams scheduled
- 33:30themselves. They figure let's just kind of
- 33:32not play for a few years, let this kind of pass, and then they
- 33:36ultimately went 15 years. So you think about the greatest
- 33:39teams in Iowa history in the at least in the 50s Yep.
- 33:44And then 63 with with Dick buckets and in Illinois and the
- 33:49Rose Bowl, all those great teams did not play one another.
- 33:53So it was, you know, it was quite a heated feud and just
- 33:57just about as feet heated as the basketball version.
- 34:00That's awesome. A trophy that was and is kind
- 34:04of, but maybe no more. The $5 bits of broken chair.
- 34:07I love this thing. Minnesota, Nebraska are kind of
- 34:10on a well, Minnesota's probably ahead of Nebraska now in
- 34:13football for the last two decades.
- 34:15It came out of nowhere. A faux Pelini, the parody
- 34:18account on Twitter along with what the Gophers mascot account
- 34:21I think is, was where this thing all started up.
- 34:23It was such a fun idea. It was so goofy.
- 34:26Why was it that Minnesota, Nebraska never took this thing
- 34:30and ran with it? Because it was such a fun, fun
- 34:32thing and they just kind of kicked it to the side.
- 34:36That's a great question, Trent. I'd like to probably ask
- 34:39somebody about it. I, I'll tell you this and and
- 34:41I'm not passing it off on them at all.
- 34:43But but I think that in some ways you look at the turnover
- 34:46that both that particularly Nebraska has had both the
- 34:49coaches and athletic directors or last 10 years, they they
- 34:53haven't had a chance to really stabilize and decide something
- 34:56like that. I, you know, and again, I, I
- 34:59think it's, it's definitely worth pursuing because one of
- 35:02the things that the greatest trope travelling trophies have
- 35:05in the big 10 or anywhere for that matter, is they, they're
- 35:08organic, they have great histories.
- 35:11And, and then there's the ones that just kind of wait, let's
- 35:13play for it. And, you know, and the hero's
- 35:15trophy can kind of be in that category, although, as I said,
- 35:17that I love the reason for it, but but the trophy itself is
- 35:21just a trophy. And I think in this case, this
- 35:24is one that's kind of organic. It's one that's fun, it's
- 35:27entertaining, and people really like it.
- 35:29I mean, you talk to so to people, they view that as kind
- 35:32of their 4th trophy, even above the Victoria, the governor's
- 35:35victory bell with Penn State just because of that.
- 35:38And I think that's that's part of college football.
- 35:41All these things are big college football, the most interesting
- 35:43sport in the country. No doubt about it, Doc, my last
- 35:46thing for you as we Fast forward to next week in Big 10 meaty
- 35:49days. I haven't seen a schedule yet.
- 35:51I'm assuming Petiti will speak and if so, you'll be there.
- 35:55Is there something on your docket?
- 35:57Did you'd like to get the commissioner?
- 35:58And you know, just just whether it's on the side or in front of
- 36:01everybody? I don't know whether he doesn't
- 36:03on the side thing or not, but what would you like to ask
- 36:06Petiti, if you get the opportunity?
- 36:08Anything? Yeah, I mean, today the SEC
- 36:11commissioner again kind of came out swinging and touting its
- 36:14conference as being the the best at eight games is way tougher
- 36:19than anybody else is dying, which is laughable.
- 36:21And I I want to I want to ask Tony, you know, and I'll
- 36:23probably do this, you know, in a side interview with that I'll
- 36:26have with him. As you know, do you feel like
- 36:28you're letting your conference down by not coming out
- 36:31forcefully and speaking about it?
- 36:33You look, I mean, you know, people, if they didn't remember
- 36:36that Ohio State won and all the success the Big 10 had in the
- 36:39postseason, they think that it was the SEC that had all this
- 36:41success, why they've let everybody forget about it.
- 36:44So I think that the the big tennis come out and start
- 36:47swinging and telling people, hey, we won the last two
- 36:49national titles. We had a very successful
- 36:52postseason. You know, we've had two teams in
- 36:54the semifinals. We're we're the best conference
- 36:56in the country. That's what they should say
- 36:58instead. Right now, it looks like we're
- 37:00just not going to say anything and hope it blows over.
- 37:02Well, it doesn't work like that in college football.
- 37:05You've got to promote yourself. This is the one sport where the
- 37:08talking game matters because perception is everything.
- 37:10And the Big 10 is really slowed at that.
- 37:12And so that's some of the conversations that I'll have
- 37:14with Tony Petit the. SEC coined it's talking season,
- 37:17if memory serves. And this kind of dovetails on
- 37:19your peace talk from late last week, week before and how the
- 37:23SEC and the Big 10 different when dealing with the media,
- 37:25right? I mean, the SEC is on front St.
- 37:28They're getting out there. There's they're stating the
- 37:31narrative or what they think the narrative is.
- 37:33And Petiti's got a chance to, you know, stick up for his
- 37:35conference. I'm with you.
- 37:36I wish he would. Good stuff.
- 37:38Scott Dachman, thank you as always.
- 37:39What can we look forward to reading about this week prior to
- 37:42you jumping on an airplane? Yeah, I'm going to.
- 37:45I'm actually going to do a story about softball and the
- 37:48Northwoods. I'm going to go up to Madison
- 37:50tomorrow and I'm going to talk to, you know, that they have
- 37:54it's the second year for for softball and in the Northwoods
- 37:57League. They've always had baseball, but
- 38:00just kind of the girls of summer and and what they're able to do
- 38:03now. And I think that's really
- 38:05interesting and mean it's a little different than what I'm
- 38:07used to. But.
- 38:09And then got a bunch of money stories that I'm also working
- 38:12on, but I won't bore you with those details right now.
- 38:14Good stuff, doc. We'll see you in Las Vegas.
- 38:16Thanks, Scott Document, have a safe flight out there.
- 38:18Enjoy your week off, so to speak.
- 38:20I say off in quotations. Thanks Doc.
- 38:23All right. Thanks guys.
- 38:24Good. To talk to you Scott document
- 38:25from the athletic as we check in some cool stories.
- 38:28I had no idea about the Did you know That story on Illinois and
- 38:31the hiatus from this. Bits and pieces, yeah.
- 38:34Yeah, not the complete breakdown.
- 38:35The doc games, I've heard of that.
- 38:36Before a little hatred. Oh absolutely.
- 38:39And it carries on in some respects to the especially
- 38:41basketball docs. Right.
- 38:42Oh, absolutely. I love Illinois, Iowa
- 38:44basketball. Was it 2 now?
- 38:46It's probably more than that now.
- 38:47They just blended. The final game was a Sunday
- 38:49night against. It was in Champaign, right?
- 38:51Yeah, it was. Connor McCaffrey was a big piece
- 38:53of that one. Yeah, he's a big piece of all of
- 38:55them. Had some great games.
- 38:56Yeah, let's get that back on the end.
- 38:59I'm all for it. I'm all for it.
- 39:01We'll take a time out. We'll come back and we'll finish
- 39:03up our #1 Trent Condon and Ken Miller were with you until two.
- 39:06It's Miller and Condon. You're listening to the Iowa
- 39:09Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller.

- 39:25up in the second hour. Matt Snyder, Trent and I will
- 39:28talk MLB as we hit the All Star break.
- 39:32Who's getting ready to make a run?
- 39:34Who you buying stock in? Who you selling stock in?
- 39:36Etcetera. Matt Snyder will join us.
- 39:38Bill Seals covers Iowa State. He will recap the Big 12 Media
- 39:42days and take a look ahead to TJ Otzelberger and what he may have
- 39:47to say tomorrow. Did you see any of the Fever
- 39:50play yesterday? Little bit, yeah.
- 39:52What did you think? Looked more connected.
- 39:54Yeah, they did, didn't they? They is it just getting their
- 39:58feet underneath them, full roster, that kind of thing.
- 40:01Look like a different team, certainly.
- 40:02Then we saw Yep, when Caitlin was making her way back, so and.
- 40:05Dallas isn't very good, to be fair.
- 40:06And that's also a big piece of it, too.
- 40:09Outside of Becker's, they don't have a.
- 40:10Whole No, they really don't. They really don't.
- 40:13Caitlin Clark still struck them shooting a three, I mean, and
- 40:17they get Connecticut later on in the week.
- 40:20Is it tomorrow? I got two games, but I want to
- 40:23see that game because that's when Mabry clocked her, knocked
- 40:26her over. 7:00 tomorrow night, yeah.
- 40:28Really. And what's the girl's name from
- 40:30Ohio State? Jason Gilbert, Is it?
- 40:32Is it Holloway, the guard, a really good player?
- 40:37Shelton. Shelton, Thank you.
